Summary Of Morality By Joan Didion
Joan Didion uses rhetorical words in Morality, to emphasize her claim as to why she is suspicion
of the definition of morality. Throughout, Morality, Didion defines and provides varies
arguments as to why she is skeptical towards moral principles. Didion starts her essay by
describing her location to present an emotional appeal to her particular setting. As it happens I am
in Death Valley, in a room at the Enterprise Motel and Trailer Park, and it is July, and it is hot
(106, para 1). The significance of describing the setting helps the reader become aware of the
authors hidden meanings around the individual location, time, and weather. The tone of the setting
described by Didion evokes emotions of isolation, despair, and loneliness.... Show more content on

A purgatory is a particular area of punishment and spiritual liberation. Which in Morality, Didion
struggles in an isolated desert, to write about a subject she feels uneasy. After describing her setting,
she describes her struggles to adjust to the heat and her difficulty in writing about morality. Didion
states, A word I distrust more every day, but in my mind veers inflexibility toward the particular
(106, para 1). In this phrase, the word distrust makes the definition of morality contain a negative
connotation. In this sentence, Didion suspicion in the meaning of morality appears in the words in
my mind veers inflexibility toward the particular . These words describe the confusion, and the
misconception that Didion has towards the definition of morality. These precise words, also
represent Didion struggles to understand what morality

Hi Catrice Case Study
Hi Catrice, I enjoyed reading your essay. It is sad to say, but your previous situation seems to
happen often. Therefore, I believe that a good strategy that you could have used would have
been the Tit for Strategy where one cooperates until the other player defects. Since you were
aware of your coworker s strategy to undermine or sabotage your efforts toward a successful
strategy. Furthermore, this may have allowed you an opportunity to bond with someone and
change his or her opinion of your efforts. Also, it appears you and your coworker had dominated
strategies towards completing two different goals. I believe that you may have missed your
opportunity to ease tensions between yourself and your team member. Now, this is a person who

Summary Of To My Dear And Loving Husband By Anne Bradstreet
The life of a Puritan woman, from a modern perspective, was a very simple one. They cleaned,
cooked, sewed, mothered, and tended to the husband. There weren t many other options for a
woman in those times and that society. It was either be a wife/mother, nun, or a fallen woman.
Anne Bradstreet chose to be a wife/mother, and unintentionally, the earliest US poet.
The themes of her poems are romantic; however because of her status as a Puritan woman, even in
her own personal writings, she was restrained to her time. As a wife, she was considered an
official lady, the moral compass that Puritan society looked up to: because of this she was limited
to what erotic activities she could perform with her husband. Knowing this, her writings were
probably expected to reflect her status and reflect the time in which she lived, and they do, to an
extent. Although Bradstreet never thought that her poems would be published or seen by the
public she still wrote them in such a way that they couldn t be considered/taken as blatantly sexual
or immoral, in a type of code for instance. One such poem that demonstrates this type of code is, To
My Dear and Loving Husband. Romance during those times and in Puritan society wasn t exactly
how we view romance nowadays. To the Puritans marriage was secondary love; their First love was
to God which for them was true love. The main reason behind the act of sex was to procreate,
rather than being for pleasure. Now a fallen woman

Archeology Personal Statement
I can pinpoint my decision to pursue a career in archeology to a single day. I was touring the old
city of Quebec in the summer of 2012 and happened upon an archeological dig site that was being
opened to the public. It contained the foundations of some of the first houses built by the French
when they settled in Quebec. Pieces of shattered pottery and rusted coins were on display. I
marveled at the thought of unearthing something previously lost to history. When I began my high
schoolcareer, I had the opportunity to be exposed to a range of social studies courses in and
outside of my high school, all of which have reinforced my interest in history, and have provided
me with a different perspective on history. For instance, during my junior... Show more content on

I originally became interested in Dutch history after studying tulip mania in an Advanced
Placement economics class. Tulip mania was a period in the Dutch Golden Age during which the
price of tulip bulbs reached an astonishing high and then plummeted, causing the Netherlands
market to crash. The connection between the economic crash in the Netherlands and art during the
time period fascinates me. The Rembrandt Tulip, famous for its mosaic virus that causes a
multicolor effect of lines, was made popular after being featured in many paintings of the Dutch
masters. It was this fame that in part led to the drastic increase in the price of tulips. After studying
tulip mania and visiting the Amsterdam/New Amsterdam exhibit at The Museum of the City of
New York, the Dutch Golden Age and how it impacted colonial America has fascinated me. I have
taken an online introduction to Dutch language course in order to pursue the study of Dutch
colonial history further. During my undergraduate career, I hope to gain valuable research
experience by studying abroad in the Netherlands and publish a paper on the subject of Dutch

The Hiding Place Book Report
The Hiding Place by Orna Jagur
The Hiding Place is about Corrie ten Boom, her family, and how they helped the Jews in Holland
when Germany invaded Holland in World War II.
The main characters are Corrie, her older sisters Betsie and Nollie, her older brother Willem, and
their father, Casper ten Boom, commonly referred to as Opa.
The book starts out in January of 1937, in Haarlem, Holland.
When Germany invaded Holland during the beginning of World War II, the Jews were the
German soldiers and Adolf Hitler s main targets. Jews were required to wear a yellow star on their
shirt, and if they walked around town during the day, they risked being taken into captivity by the
German soldiers. This, among other racism against ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
So Corrie would take the ration cards that were hidden and give them to Jews. After a year or so,
Corrie and her family ran out of places to send Jews for hiding, so they were forced to keep 7 Jews
in their own house.
A fellow member of the Dutch Underground warned the ten Boom family that if their house
was ever to be searched by soldiers and they had Jews in their house, they d be in trouble. For
families living in the country this wasn t much of a problem, but the ten Boom house (the Beje),
was located on the main street of the city and around the corner from the German headquarters!
Since the Beje also served as a pretty famous watch store, this could also be a problem because
random people could come in during open store hours. To fix this problem, a man offered to
build a secret room located somewhere in the Beje. This room is where the Jews would hide if
the Beje had been broken in and searched through by the Germans. The man had built the secret
room into the back of Corrie s personal bedroom. When he was done, it was completely
unnoticeable to the naked eye that there was a hidden room behind her bedroom wall. For months,
the 7 Jews (Eusie, Jop, Henk, Leendert, Meta, Thea, and Mary) just slept in it.
On February 28th, 1944, the Secret room got its first and only time to actually hide the 7 Jews in
the ten Boom household. It seemed, somehow,

Marriott International
Analysis of Marriott International:
A closer look
Marriott International was founded on May 15, 1927 by J. Willard Marriott in Washington D.C. It

Using SWOT analysis is a good way to analyze the product make up of Marriott International.
One of the main strengths for this company is the brand name. Marriott International is a strong
brand name and is known for their mid to higher end hotels. All of the nicer hotels bear the
Marriott name while the lower end hotels have only the specific hotel name on them (Pashia,
2012). Marriott International has many different brands including: the Ritz Carlton, Renaissance
hotels, AC hotels, JW Marriott, Bulgari hotels and resorts, Edition, Autograph collection,
Marriott hotels and resorts, Courtyard by Marriott etc. (Ersayar, 2012). Because of Marriott s
diversified brands and all types of hotels, from luxury and high end to the lower end, it has a
strong market presence. Good employee retention is also a strength of Marriott International. The
total workforce for this company is over 150,000 with a good promotion program from within
(Pashia, 2012). IT solutions are a large way to bring in business and are another one of their
strengths. According to Christy Pashia in her Marriot overview article, Marriott International is
upgrading its properties with technology that responds to the needs of business and leisure
travelers. It has transformed its public areas to encourage guests to work and socialize through the
adoption of the latest design, technology, food and beverage offerings (Pashia, 2012). With the new

Essay about Drug Legalization
Drug Legalization
Strong drug enforcement in the United States is correlated with the reduction in crime , drug use,
and drug addiction growth rates. The impact on tougher drug sanctions has been overshadowed by a
myth that U.S. drug enforcement has become too lenient.
This myth has been promoted by the multi million dollar pro drug legalization lobby, civil
libertarians, and misguided academic researchers to the public with limited review and challenge.
Attacks on drug enforcement efforts often hold law enforcement to impossible and changing
performance standards. Law enforcement , treatment , and prevention complement each other.

Legalization may lessen the violence surrounding drug dealing , but the real problem is violence
resulting from drug use, and this must be addressed with strong law enforcement , substance abuse
treatment, prevention and a commitment to change.
Anyone who uses marijuana and thinks that quot;pot quot; is not harmful is fooling themselves.
The active ingredient THC , is addictive , and users can get just as addicted as they can with
nicotine ( cigarettes and chewing tobacco) or alcohol or cocaine.
Any tax revenue collected resulting from legalization would be minimal compared to the social cost
of addiction. Legalization would create even more clients for an already overburdened treatment
system, and at a much higher cost.
Treatment is only a part of the price that we pay, we will also be paying for the marijuana users
increased health problems, reduced productivity , injuries from auto accidents , and crime. The
overwhelming media impact on drug legalization is scary when you think of the impact on young
people. Marijuana is the most widely used illicit drug in the United States. The good news is that
marijuana use is down slightly according to some recent surveys. We must send messages to society
especially the teen age members that it is not all right to get quot; high quot;, getting high is not a
message that stresses healthy relaxation and coping with problems

How to Measure Social Culture and Organizational Culture...
Introduction
How to measure social culture and organizational culture of one country is an important issue
(Miroshnik, 2002). Culture can be defined as the way of life of the group of people, which
includes beliefs, art, law, morals, customs, and any capabilities and habits acquired by a man as a
member of society, and enables people to communicate with others, provides the knowledge and
skill necessary, and anticipates how others in society are likely to respond for the actions
(Miroshnik, 2002).
In other hand, managers frequently view culture as the collective programming of the mind which
distinguishes the members of one human group from another and the interactive aggregate of
common characteristics that influence a group s ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
For examples, Indonesians avoid admitting lack of knowledge, inability to complete something, or
deny something that it is actually true in order to show dignity.
Indonesians are polite people. Upon meeting and leaving, it is usual to shake hands with both men
and women. The other example is Indonesians avoid using left hand when offering something to
others, because it is regarded as the unclean hand. It is also rude to point someone with a finger
(Makmur, 2002). The fact is Indonesian cultural values do not adapt or include some of the
elements in the western societies.

Rhetorical Analysis Of Robert F. Kennedy s Speech
Robert F. Kennedy was one of the many presidents that aided the Civil Rights Movement to stop
racial segregation. Many of our former presidents have given inspiring speeches, but no speech was
as awe inspiring as the Remarks on the Assassination of Martin Luther King. The event that brought
Kennedy to speak was MLK being shot that night in Memphis, Tennessee. Using emotional tactics,
President Kennedy addressed the public, educating them on the direction the United Stateswas
headed, as well as, how to deal with racial conflict.
Though one of the nation s most influential civil rights activists, Martin Luther King, had been
killed, the country has chosen to love one another and feel a sense of empathy for those who suffer.
Robert F. Kennedy addressed the public that Martin Luther King Jr. had been assassinated in
Memphis, Tennessee (Kennedy 1). He stated that the United States could head in two directions,
one being of segregation. Another being, they can have compassion toward each other, and a
feeling of empathy towards those who still suffered within the country, whether they be black ...

African Women In Colonial Society By Carol Berkin
Essays should have organized thoughts, an interesting writing style, and most importantly get the
attention of the reader. The essay, African Women in Colonial Society, by Carol Berkin was no
exception. The claims were well thought out and clear, and the essay definitely hooked readers in
with an anecdote that led into the story quite fittingly. She had three noticeable claims that were
major that she talks about in the essay, and that is the struggles of African women, moreso
compared to that of a man s, the silver linings that the women found, and finally the unity of the
Africans through common languages and religion. For one thing, women struggled with obstacles,
that men could not even have. Women took a major role in childbirth, but the malnourished, and
overworked women were not in the best condition to have children. Regardless they had many,
and that mean a lot of the women and their children would die during birth. They had about three
children in their lifetime, and only two would survive. Additionally, the laws back then had no
care for the wellbeing of the women. This led to awful laws that actually benefitted the men who
would rape and seduce women. Additionally, all of the adjusting they had to do after their arrival
really took a toll on them. Once they came to America after their brutal transport through the
middle passage, they had to immediately be accustomed to a new language, climate, food, and
culture. Once she was sold to her master, a lot of her

Ethical Tourism in the Postcolonial Era Essay
Tourism has become a huge source of revenue and cultural exchange for many parts of the
developing and developed world. Through tourism people are able to escape their normal routine
and interact with exotic and different places, as well as people. This act of traveling for the sake
of pleasure and vacation sometimes leads tourists astray in their ethical judgment of how to act as a
visitor in a different land. This paper will dive deeper into this issue by comparing the tourist
through the sexualized tourismmarket in Brazil and more ethical forms of alternative tourism, such
as volunteer tourism.
The act of touring has been done for hundreds of years but has morphed into a more lucrative,
dangerous industry as travel has become more ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This creates a sort of nostalgia, as well as a biased expectation of what a tourist is to encounter in
his or her travels. More than just photographs, the tourist industry has boomed since the marketing
of place via destination or tourist representation . According to Mercille, the tourist representation is
the the effect of the visual and written content of guidebooks and magazines on the imagination that
tourists have of a destination (Bandyopadhyay, 934). Through these representations the
expectations of travel are high, leading tourists to a self fulfilling prophecy of their travel agenda
(Bandyopadhyay, 934). As Appadurai notes that the mediascape provides large and complex
repertoires of images, narratives and ethnoscapes to viewers throughout the world, in which the
world of commodities and the world of news and politics are profoundly mixed (App). He says that
through these mediascapes an audience is more likely to create an imagined world that might be
less than realistic and probably different from other parts of the imagined world . With this in mind,
the tourism industry plays into the mediascapes images, portraying a ideal place that may
compromise the authenticity of place. This puts immense pressure on the host nation because they

The Effects Of Consumerism
Consumerism comes from the verb consume, which is rooted in the Latin word consumere,
meaning to use up or to waste. The noun consumerism also refers to a movement that promotes the
interests of consumers that is, people who purchase goods, use them, and then buy more especially
the protection of these consumers from things like fraud or price gouging ( Consumerism).
Consumerism has changed over the thousands of years that people have been living. Some
people believe that consumerism is great where it helps stimulate the economy, but other people
see it as an evil force because it hurts people and makes them care less about their self and the
world around them. I can agree with the people that says it is good for the economy; however, I

an interview that I have read from NBC Learn, she had mentioned that she had seen that people

American Society After Wwii Experienced A Major Change
American society after WWII experienced a major change. The growth of business and industry
provided abundant wealth for the country. The middle class grew and grew; this social class was
deemed affluent. As the classes grew, the paradox between progress and poverty in a society
which was capable of providing for everyone showed the countries inability to deal with social and
civil issues. But, this didn t just happen overnight. There are several factors which showed signs
and contributed this society and the growth of the economy, such as, the building of suburbs due to

Because the blacks were unable to break the racial barrier they were stuck with low end jobs. As a
result of Urbanization blacks were entering cities as whites were moving to suburbs. The gap
between rich and poor was huge.
BABY BOOM AND SUBURBIA: Affordable housing, the desire to leave the cities, and racial
fears were all factors that led to many white Americans to move to suburban areas. William Levitt
was a main promoter of suburban living, he was contracted by the federal government during the
war to quickly build housing for military personnel; Levitt applied the techniques of mass
production to construction. In 1947, he set out to erect the largest planned living community in the
United States on farmland he had purchased on Long Island, New York.
Each house had two bedrooms, one bathroom, and no basement. The kitchen was situated near the
back of the house so mothers could keep an eye on their children in the backyard. Within one year,
Levitt was building 36 houses per day. His assembly line approach made the houses extremely
affordable. At first, the homes were available only to veterans. Eventually, though, Levittown, was
open to others as well. By 1960, more Americans lived in suburbs than in cities; because few new
homes were built during the war years, the country faced a housing shortage. Another reason for
moving to the suburbs was the baby boom. After World War II came to an end, the United States
experienced unprecedented population growth, known

Leadership Communication Skills And Effective Leadership
Final Paper
Introduction
Michael Z. Hackman and Craig E. Johnson, co authors of Leadership Communication Skills (1995),
underline leadership as the influential connectivity between humans through the effective
understanding and application of symbols and behavior regulation (p. 428 429). Essentially,
leadership stands possible as motivating others through channels which lead to success, and is
accomplished through meaningful, strategic interaction. Effective leadership, while fundamentally
requires technical knowledge, motivates, develops, and guides others through adept social / people
skills. At the core, leadership is about two way interconnection with others both in self awareness of

Case Study: Palapa Politics
Summary of Issues
The main issues in this case are regarding to a scarce resource, a beachfront Palapa, which is an
important product for this resort adding great value to customers. Due to this very limited spots The
Caribbean Palm Resort has been struggling for developing the right pricing strategy in order to
achieve both revenue and customer satisfaction goals. However, the approaches to date they

The resort keeps changing its price policy frequently and it confuses the customers and it is
unreliable.
Towel Hut * Too much responsibility: It is no longer a towel hut. It covers not only distributing and
collecting towels but also explaining policy, taking reservations and managing palapas and
customers complaints and so on.
Recommended Solutions and Justification * Increasing the supply: The resort could provide
more palapas so that more quests can have opportunity to enjoy it. However I assume that there
could be a limitation of installing palapas by government (such as not to damage the nature).
There is no information regarding government s permission. If so, they should offer alternatives
for customers. The alternatives could be canopies or beach umbrellas. However, these should be
provided free. * Abandoning the first come, first served system: All palapas should be rented so
that some customers who choose not to pay for palapas would not feel frustrated or slighted and
it is fairer for every customer to pay for them and no one needs to line up and waste time. *
Consistent and reliable pricing strategy: The Price system should be an hourly basis not daily. For
instance, the resort charges $8 / hour for the use of a palapa. The resort needs to optimize their
scarce resource wisely. * Allocating towel hut s responsibility: The resort should

The Mughal Empire Was Created By A Man Known Babur
One of the most famous empires in India, known as the Mughal Empire was created by a man
known Babur (who was a decent of Genghis Khan). He didn t have many successes in remaining
and conquering central Asia like his ancestors so therefore he decided to try and conquer South
Asia. Around 1527 he defeated two of the most powerful forces in India but was not able to turn
the territory he gained into an empire. After his death he left that responsibility to his son
Humayun, who even through lacked the military genius, was able to gain and have a foot hold in
Agraand Delhi (mainly through the help of Persian Military). But it was his son Akbar who is
credited for really laying the foundation for the Empire to flourish. During his reign from 1556
1605, he managed to gain territory over the northern and central India. He also secured the
northwestern frontier (gateway to India for so many previous invasions). His most important
territorial gain was the area of Gujarat, in the west, which provided the Mughal empirewith
enormous wealth from its commercial centers, as well as access to the Arabian Sea and hence
opportunity for lucrative trade with both the Europeans and the Ottoman empire. He was also into
in spiritual and religious issues, and in 1582 he created a new code of religious behavior. And had

Analysis Of The Movie Jurassic Park
Literary Criticism involves a critic or just a reader who criticizes literary elements in a piece of
work such as those in books and articles just to mention a few, in this case we are referring to the
Jurassic Park series. Jurassic Park is a four part movie series that has a pretty common, redundant
style throughout the movies. In the series, it includes Jurassic Park, Lost World: Jurassic Park,
Jurassic Park III, and Jurassic World, which includes all elements that are to be expected in an
action, dramatic sci fi movie. The present criticism in this series is structuralism and the author s
writing style towards the movies gets more intense as the series progresses along. John Michael
Crichton, is the author of the two published books from the series; Jurassic Park and Jurassic
World (michaelcritchon.com). Michael was born on October 23, 1942, in the city of Chicago,
Illinois. He attended Harvard University and became a doctor post his graduation. His most
famous award is the Mystery Writers of America s Edgar Allen Poe Award (1968) and he also
won an Emmy for the best dramatic series in 1996 (michaelcritchon.com). Michael had an
interesting style when he wrote these two books. He writes with a very imaginative writing style
that makes ideas come out of nowhere and with that comes a lot of editing because it takes a lot
of time to make an idea into a good story. Jurassic Park the book, was also written by Michael
Crichton, the book is very similar to the movie in

Essay on The Quest for Peace in Siddhartha, by Hermann Hesse
Siddhartha, an allegorical novel written by Hermann Hesse, primarily tells the tale of an Indian
man, Siddhartha, and his quest for peace and totality during the time of the Buddha. The story
focuses on him leaving his family home in India to find this peace and totality, but the theme of this
story is not just about Siddhartha, there is an underlying theme which demonstrates that Siddhartha
is not the only person searching for this peace, and this quest is not solely the theme of the story
for Siddhartha, but for many of the characters, Siddhartha included. Siddhartha s father, the
Brahmin, is on his quest to find peace, the Buddha had already found their peace and Siddhartha is
of course also searching for peace. The theme of the novel... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

With such a high social status, one would assume that the holy man would be satisfied with his
life, and this would be an incorrect assumption. He may have thought that he was satisfied, but
he knew his life was far from complete, and he was in reality very far from being at peace. He
was a very vapid man, and only did what he thought was making him happy, and at peace.
Siddhartha s father could not even get his son to follow the rituals to become a Hindu scholar
like he was. Siddhartha s father would do ablutions in the river and would constantly offer
sacrifices to the gods in his never ending attempts to find peace and totality for himself.
Constantly searching for this totality, a sense that his life was complete and was for something,
Siddhartha s father knew that his life would never be complete, not without his son. Siddhartha
s father can search his whole life, but it will never be enough when his own son ran away from
home. Siddhartha s father was constantly looking for peace and totality, and was not the only
one trying to achieve this goal in the novel. It s quite unfortunate he will never be at peace, as he
never saw his son again. Siddhartha s father may as well be comatose; he will never achieve true
peace and totality until he is with his son, who seeks peace and totality, just like his father does.
Siddhartha grew up with his friend Govinda. Siddhartha found that he required peace and totality in
his life, and Govinda simply just

The Themes Of Paranoia And Fear In The Atomic Age
The question of whether paranoia and fear were the prevailing mood in America after 1945 is not
one that can be answered in a black or white approach. We, as students of the present world, are
fortunate enough to be able to take on a zoomed out perspective on this issue; but the same could
not be done by Americans who lived through the beginning of the Atomic Age. They had far too
little knowledge about an issue that had such overreaching implications; and whatever little
knowledge they had were mostly incomplete or distorted. A recurring theme of the film was the
mismatch between what the Americans were told by the government, and the actual gravity of the
situation. The movie highlights these two extremes by alternating between scenes that... Show more

The Effects Of Stress On Students With Stress Management
Relief Stress is something everyone deals with on different levels and in different ways. Stress
can originate from daily hassles, bad time management, and big life changing decisions. College is
where all three of these appear to meet; whether it be deciding what career to chase, the impending
terror of midterms, or what to eat for lunch stressis surrounding college students. If universities do
not look into ways of helping students with stress management, than students are not only at risk of
a rough college experience but they are possible health issues. The Universityof Oklahoma has
taken into consideration that stress affects its students; they have posted a guide line of signs of
stress and how to deal with it on the OU Police Department page. My question is why is the
information on the OUPD site instead of where it can be more visible? Do students even know
about the page and is the page even mentioned to incoming freshmen? Are there ways the
university prepares or informs students of the stress they may deal with while in college? With
the current page titled College Stress buried in the OU police department webpage not many
people are going to find the page. For someone to find this page they would need to go to the

How Did Ashoka Spread
As a leader of his people, Ashoka used the teachings of the Buddha to create a basis of social

Ashoka become a respected leader in ancient India. Buddhism, in its origins was spread by the
Buddha himself, and it was created on a sense of self reliance and discipline that is not apparent in

Gertrude Stein s Speech On Deconstruction In Theatre
Gertrude Stein on Deconstruction in Theatre In Laura Schultz s speech on Gertrude Stein s plays,
she suggests how Stein s deconstruction of dramatic conventions greatly affected contemporary
theatre today. She focuses on Stein s deconstruction of the mimetic relationship between the text
and performance, as well as the deconstruction of the unity of the dramatic character. Schultz
discusses how Stein was inspired by avant garde theatrein Europe, and is now one of the most
influential theatre artists (especially in the field of performance art), but is often overlooked in the

Art and reality should not be represented through stable and mimetic means only; the
transformation from text to performance must also be considered in different terms. While the
text is a work of art in its own right, performance should not be limited to just the illustration of
the text. The play is a literary genre which implies that there is a performative aspect in all forms
of writing and language. She then points out that in a theatrical event, concretizing the play

there will be a never ending quarrel between good and evil. This can be compared to a specifically
recent event: the Las Vegas terror attack. Though this may only be one event, the threat of terror
attacks has been a constant concern; the Las Vegas, only being more severe and recent. This
constant tension between the terrorists and the people is just as that of Beowulf and Grendel: never

The Problem Of A Resident And Educator
In Los Angeles, the traditional definition of the word affordable must be abandoned when
searching for housing. If you are relocating to the Los Angeles area from a mid sized city or small
town, the first thing you should do is let go of what affordable means in places other than Los
Angeles. Affordable in The Midwest and The South is $650 for a nice one bedroom apartment. In
Los Angeles, $600 per month will land you in a roach infested downtown flop house or sharing
a one bedroom apartment with three roommates. So, what are you willing to put up with? What
kind of nightlife do you enjoy? What is your diet like and can you survive without a Whole
Foods or Trader Joe s near by? Do you depend on the amenities and safety of the suburbs?(Schools
and family oriented information will not be covered in this article, because as a resident and
educator, I would NEVER suggest moving children into this adult oriented metropolis) Families
should head for what is known as The West Side and unfortunately there are no affordable
neighborhoods out west. When a single person or couple is determining what is affordable in Los
Angeles, they must consider location, amenities and crime rates. The following breakdown of
neighborhoods within Los Angeles Countyand Hollywood provides insight to the eclectic
affordable sections of town: Looking for an affordable neighborhood might lead you to Koreatown,
where a large studio apartment averages about $750 per month. A low rent

Treasure In Beowulf

Beowulf Analysis
Throughout the poem, Beowulf, the repetition of treasure plays a significant a role as it was
important in Anglo Saxon culture. Treasure had a positive moral value and symbolized honor
and recognition as it is given after someone has performed a heroic act, such as after a battle. It
also proved the heroism in the character as well as their showed their victory and achievements.
This idea is depicted in the very beginning of the book when they stretched their beloved lord in
his boat, laid out by the mast, amidships, the great ring giver. Far fetched treasures were piled upon
him, and precious gear (34 37). This quote starts off giving the reader an indication that treasure

Beowulf was presented with a gold standard as a victory gift, an embroidered banner; also breast
mail and a helmet; and a sword (1020 1030) and the other Geats were rewarded some treasured
possession as well. King Hrothgar also adopts Beowulf in his heart as a dear son (946) This
shows that Beowulf and the other men received rewards as a token of honor for risking their
lives fighting a battle with Grendel. Before Beowulf goes on his quest to attack Grendel s
mother, he reminds Hrothgar to send Hygelac the treasures [he] received if he will die in battle,
which again portrays the idea of treasure symbolizing generosity and gratitude (1483). When
Beowulf returns home from a victory battling Grendel s mother and brings back [Grendel s]
head and the inlaid hilt embossed with jewels , he receives praise as well as treasure and
receives a promise of friendship with Hrothgar (1614 1615;1707 1708). As Beowulf prepares to
depart and return back to Hygelac, the earls defender furnished the hero with twelve treasure to
ensure that he will be safe on the way home (1866). This exhibits the Geats gratefulness for
Beowulf s courage in fighting Grendel and his

Harriet Beecher Stowe And His Family Essay
During the 1800s slavery was common. Although, many people thought it was wrong and sinful,
some actually did not mind the practice. Harriet Beecher Stowe and her family were one of many
who were activists in the anti slavery movement. She was born in Litchfield, Connecticut on June
14, 1811. Her father, Lyman Beecher, was a Calvinist preacher, and her mother, Roxana Foote, died
when she was four. When Stowe was 25 years old, she married Calvin Ellis Stowe, who was also
against slaveryand a well known minister. Stowe s sister, Isabella Beecher Hooker, was an
advocate for women s rights. Another of her sisters, Catherine, founded a school to offer
education for young women. Uncle Tom s Cabin is about the life of Tom, an african slave, who
was sold to a trader because of the debt owed by his master. He was being moved to the South
where he would begin his life like he has never done. Slavery has always been a sorrowful topic, so
when we were given the years between 1492 to 1870, it came to mind right away. Google gave a
handful of books to read, but only this mysterious title stroke curiosity.
The book started off with a conversation between two men, Mr. Shelby, a farmer, and Mr. Haley,
who is a trader. They were discussing the conduct of their slaves. Mr. Shelby had a plethora of
positive things to say about his slaves because he was a very nice person. Mr. Haley on the other
hand, was very negative and did not trust any slave. Shelby spoke about this one particular slave

The Amistad Essay
The Amistad
The Amistad was a Spanish ship built in Baltimore for the purpose of transporting slaves. For
three years, it sailed the high seas delivering its cargo to various locations. But in August of 1838,
a scandalous injustice was uncovered after the ship was seized by an American vessel, the USS
Washington, a coast guard ship under the command of Lt. Thomas R. Gedney. Lt. Gedney and his
crew towed the Amistad into a New England harbor in Connecticut where soon many controversies
amounted and drama would unfold.
For 63 days, the Amistad had been drifting toward the American shoreline. As conditions
deteriorated aboard the vessel, it s inhabitants at the time, Africans, sick and dying, were in need of

Green and Lt. Gedney, were claiming salvage rights to the ship. The value of the cargowas
estimated at $40,000, not including the Africans, who were an additional $20,000 $30,000 on the
Havana market. United States District Attorney for Connecticut, William Hollabird was called in.
Slave trade had been outlawed in the United States colonies for almost 30 years and in Spain for
19. Feeling something was wrong with the stories surrounding this vessel, Mr. Hollabird ordered
a judicial hearing. The call for the hearing was not out of concern for the Africans, but, Mr.
Hollabird, as a representative of the law, had to follow legal procedures of an investigation. The
matter of murder, piracy, salvage rights and more sent this case to trial, and the Africans were
placed in detainment under the custody of the US Marshall. The case appeared before Judge
Andrew Judson.
Abolitionists were very active during this time in history. After they became aware of this case,
they decided to become involved on behalf of the Africans. They were to use this case as a means
of publicizing the evils of the African slave trade and slavery itself.
Lewis Tappan, a descendant of Benjamin Franklin, wanted to change the world. As an admitted
Christian evangelistic abolitionist, he firmly believed slavery was a moral wrong and openly
opposed it. He called for many of the leading

Why Sale Of Royal Dutch Petroleum Co. And Shell Transport...

WSJ Report 2
Why should shares of Royal Dutch Petroleum Co. and Shell Transport Trading Co. trade lock step
with one another ? What does this suggest about market efficiency?
In 1907 both companies agreed to combine interests while remaining separate entities, and as a
result they share both profits and dividends. However, the divergence between the two companies
suggests that there is semi strong market efficiency because there are arbitrage opportunities, most
likely due to insider information.
What are some of the explanations given in the article for why one company has traded at a
premium over the other over time? Explain how these factors affect stock values.
Royal Dutch Co. and Shell have combined interests and share the same profits and dividends.
However, they exist as separate entities and have distinct stock. Theoretically their stock should
trade at the same price, yet one usually trades at a premium over the other. The article explains that
this has happened in the past is because throughout the 1970 s Britain imposed limits on dividends.
This caused Shell, which is traded on the London Stock Exchange, to be an unattractive stock as it
limited capital gains from dividends. Instead investors opted for Royal Dutch, which is traded on
the Amsterdam Stock Exchange, because it was not subject to the same limits. As a result, Shell s
stock was least valuable. Later, in 1979

Most Controversial Issues In Today s Society
Stop and frisk. One of the most controversial issues of today s society. This dates back all the
way to 1967 with the case Terry v Ohio. In this case, an officer by the name of Martin Mcfadden,
patrolling his surrounding area, noticed two African American men acting suspiciously in front of a
store on a street corner at 1276 Euclid Avenue. Mcfadden described the men to be alternately
walking back and forth and conversing while taking breaks in between. He also stated that the two
men later met up with another African Americanmale one block over and soon after, rejoined him
in front of the store once more.Officer Mcfadden believed he was witnessing what seemed to be a

I personally do not believe in stop and frisk. The policy of stop and frisk is supposed to be an
action used for suspicious activity however, it is being used for racial profiling instead. I believe
stop and frisk is just another excuse to violate and attack minorities. As stated in the article
mentioned above Why Stop and Frisk Does Not Work , african americans are stopped and
frisked 23% more times than whites and still less contraband and weapons are found on african
americans. The fourth amendment protects people from unreasonable searches and seizures. So
why target the innocent people or people who are less likely to contain weapons/contraband?
This is because they are using discriminatory practices and use stop and frisk to single out
minorities. Being black is a crime. At least that is how the system sees it. Not all law
enforcement is bad but a large portion of them have this ignorant mindset that allows them to
think and act the way they do . As an African American you re never safe. You continuously have
to live in fear. You have to watch the way you walk, talk, position your hands, look at people, etc
because anything as a black person can be seen as a threat considering our skin is already one.
Rather than fighting actual crime, law enforcement officers are stopping people just to display their
authority over you. I, as a young african american woman, could not

It plays cold facts of reality on how people lived during early 20th century. Family values,
poverty and technology are among the most important and remarkable themes of the story,
issues that are still of big concern now in the 21st century. Kate believed in the powerful role
that values played in family being fiercely devout to her Catholic and moral disciplines toward
her sisters. These beliefs are still on our society though many people are living them behind
especially in liberal countries, destroying family integrity. Poverty as we mentioned have always
existed, economical depressions and unemployment are the main factors of this struggle. Many
people live like the Mandy family today or even worst. Is an issue that the entire world still needs
to dial with. On the other hand, through the story we can see how technology connects people
being sometimes a good distraction for making great memories with the people you love; back in
time with just one radio and now with different devices that bring us closer than ever. As the
audience mentioned This play reflects charged emotions about Irish living conditions. The spirit of
music and dancing among the sisters let them forget about their troubles and kick up their heels,

Antigone Tragedy Analysis
Antigone, a play that Sophocles wrote exhibits a tragedy. Several factors determine whether or not
Antigone could be put under the category of a tragedy. Greek tragedies consist of three elements:
the play includes a catastrophic and inevitable resolution; the protagonist, Antigone, causes all the
problems; and finally, the tragic heromust have a tragic flaw or hamartia that leads to the
catastrophe. To exemplify a Greek tragedyor drama, Antigone must correspond with the three
principal characteristics that define a Greek drama.
Antigone, comes to an end with a catastrophic and inevitable death of a young girl. Antigone
concluded that her decision to bury her brother, Polyneices, would ultimately result in her demise.
If not by her Uncle Creon s hand, then her own: She had made a noose of her fine linen veil and
hanged herself (Sophocles 5.959 960). Her demise, resulted from her irascible uncle who made a
law preventing the burial of Polyneices, whom he saw as an ignominy. Ultimately fate will
always win against free will, and similar to what Antigone said, ... now you can prove what you
are: A true sister, or a traitor to your family (Sophocles Prologue.26 27). Her choice remained set in
stone, and determined to bury Polyneices, she still not only accepts death but also faces it with
honor.
In Antigone, Antigone s behavior turns out to be the sole cause of all the problems within the
play. Usually, the protagonist s choices lead to the crux of the tragedy. In Antigone, the main
character, Antigone, portrays the role of the protagonist. Antigone s determination to commit
heresy initiated all the chaos within the play. Often, the crux of the tragedy affects the
protagonist and innocent bystanders. The first being Antigone s lover, Haimon, who was the son
of Creon and Eurydice, Creon s wife. Due to Antigone taking her own life, Haimon ends up
taking his life as well. This action, allegedly, being done out of sadness for his lover, Haimon lay
beside hers, his arms about her waist, lamenting her, his love lost under ground, crying out that his
father has stolen her away from him (Sophocles 5.960 963). The second being Haimon s mother,
Eurydice, who likewise killed herself, but this time, out of sadness for

Under Contract Law Case Study
The best model of jurisprudence describing a court s review of local zoning ordinances termed as
the planning law suggests that some form of plan is necessary. The model draws heavily on
administrative law doctrines to state that all gradual changes must conform to standards set out in
the previous scheme. In this context, it means that the rezoning of residential land to commercial
was contrary to the previous planin the zoning ordinance. Moreover, courts apply the case of
Fasano v. Board of County Commissioner that sets a precedent on the need to enforce conformity to
a plan.
Under contract law, courts take relevance in the express terms of an agreement and any applicable
course of past course of dealing, usage of trade and industry between parties by construing contract
terms whenever reasonable as consistent with each other to ascertain the meaning of the parties

The American Dream is a vision of economic opportunity available to all those who work for it,

characters that they are entitled to the fruits of miracles. Despite their best intentions for supporting
their families, Walter Younger and Willy Loman encounter unsurpassable obstacles and are unable

this climax and empower the tragic hero of the story to make a redeeming decision. A major source

that question becomes meaningless when a crook dupes Walter and runs away with the money.
Desperate, Walter is tempted to acknowledge racial inferiority by staying out of Clybourne park in

A Dream For A World Without Food Labels Essay
A Dream for a World Without Food Labels In his essay My Dream Food Label, Mark Bittman
makes the case that current food labels, while providing the consumer with ample information,
do not indicate whether or not the food contained is really beneficial . Bittman argues that labels
should additionally involve clear graphics, such as a traffic light indicating the healthiness of the
food, as well as criteria such as hormones, antibiotics, pesticides, etc. These criteria would ideally
also include the production of the food, particularly the welfare of the workers and animals
involved, and perhaps even the carbon footprint of the food. Bittman ultimately uses such
advocacy for food label reform to support his own proposed food label design, equipped with a 15
point color coded scale ranking the food according to its nutrition, as it currently exists, foodiness ,
or how close the food is to real food , and welfare , or the overall treatment of the workers,
animals, and environment. While his arguments for food labels are well intentioned, attempting to
address serious issues, Bitman s supposed solutions are highly flawed. Bittman s call for greater
awareness, responsibility, and sustainability of the welfare involved with the food industry is
admirable. The widespread access to food from all over the world has certainly created great
ambiguity around food sources. As a result, food production and transport methods can evade
public awareness, individuals

Throughout, Morality, Didion defines and provides varies arguments as to why she is skeptical towards moral principles. Didion starts her essay by describing her location to present an emotional appeal to her particular setting. As it happens I am in Death Valley, in a room at the Enterprise Motel and Trailer Park, and it is July, and it is hot (106, para 1). The significance of describing the setting helps the reader become aware of the authors hidden meanings around the individual location, time, and weather. Therefore, I believe that a good strategy that you could have used would have been the Tit for Strategy where one cooperates until the other player defects. Since you were aware of your coworker s strategy to undermine or sabotage your efforts toward a successful strategy. Furthermore, this may have allowed you an opportunity to bond with someone and change his or her opinion of your efforts. Also, it appears you and your coworker had dominated strategies towards completing two different goals. I believe that you may have missed your opportunity to ease tensions between yourself and your team member. Now, this is a person who ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 4. Summary Of To My Dear And Loving Husband By Anne Bradstreet The life of a Puritan woman, from a modern perspective, was a very simple one. They cleaned, cooked, sewed, mothered, and tended to the husband. There weren t many other options for a woman in those times and that society. It was either be a wife/mother, nun, or a fallen woman. Anne Bradstreet chose to be a wife/mother, and unintentionally, the earliest US poet. The themes of her poems are romantic; however because of her status as a Puritan woman, even in her own personal writings, she was restrained to her time. As a wife, she was considered an official lady, the moral compass that Puritan society looked up to: because of this she was limited to what erotic activities she could perform with her husband. Knowing this, her writings were probably expected to reflect her status and reflect the time in which she lived, and they do, to an extent. Although Bradstreet never thought that her poems would be published or seen by the public she still wrote them in such a way that they couldn t be considered/taken as blatantly sexual or immoral, in a type of code for instance. One such poem that demonstrates this type of code is, To My Dear and Loving Husband. Romance during those times and in Puritan society wasn t exactly how we view romance nowadays. To the Puritans marriage was secondary love; their First love was to God which for them was true love. The main reason behind the act of sex was to procreate, rather than being for pleasure. Now a fallen woman ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 5. Archeology Personal Statement I can pinpoint my decision to pursue a career in archeology to a single day. I was touring the old city of Quebec in the summer of 2012 and happened upon an archeological dig site that was being opened to the public. It contained the foundations of some of the first houses built by the French when they settled in Quebec. Pieces of shattered pottery and rusted coins were on display. I marveled at the thought of unearthing something previously lost to history. When I began my high schoolcareer, I had the opportunity to be exposed to a range of social studies courses in and outside of my high school, all of which have reinforced my interest in history, and have provided me with a different perspective on history. For instance, during my junior... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... I originally became interested in Dutch history after studying tulip mania in an Advanced Placement economics class. Tulip mania was a period in the Dutch Golden Age during which the price of tulip bulbs reached an astonishing high and then plummeted, causing the Netherlands market to crash. The connection between the economic crash in the Netherlands and art during the time period fascinates me. The Rembrandt Tulip, famous for its mosaic virus that causes a multicolor effect of lines, was made popular after being featured in many paintings of the Dutch masters. It was this fame that in part led to the drastic increase in the price of tulips. After studying tulip mania and visiting the Amsterdam/New Amsterdam exhibit at The Museum of the City of New York, the Dutch Golden Age and how it impacted colonial America has fascinated me. I have taken an online introduction to Dutch language course in order to pursue the study of Dutch colonial history further. During my undergraduate career, I hope to gain valuable research experience by studying abroad in the Netherlands and publish a paper on the subject of Dutch colonialism in ... • 6. The Hiding Place Book Report The Hiding Place by Orna Jagur The Hiding Place is about Corrie ten Boom, her family, and how they helped the Jews in Holland when Germany invaded Holland in World War II. The main characters are Corrie, her older sisters Betsie and Nollie, her older brother Willem, and their father, Casper ten Boom, commonly referred to as Opa. The book starts out in January of 1937, in Haarlem, Holland. When Germany invaded Holland during the beginning of World War II, the Jews were the German soldiers and Adolf Hitler s main targets. Jews were required to wear a yellow star on their shirt, and if they walked around town during the day, they risked being taken into captivity by the German soldiers. This, among other racism against ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... So Corrie would take the ration cards that were hidden and give them to Jews. After a year or so, Corrie and her family ran out of places to send Jews for hiding, so they were forced to keep 7 Jews in their own house. A fellow member of the Dutch Underground warned the ten Boom family that if their house was ever to be searched by soldiers and they had Jews in their house, they d be in trouble. For families living in the country this wasn t much of a problem, but the ten Boom house (the Beje), was located on the main street of the city and around the corner from the German headquarters! Since the Beje also served as a pretty famous watch store, this could also be a problem because random people could come in during open store hours. To fix this problem, a man offered to build a secret room located somewhere in the Beje. This room is where the Jews would hide if the Beje had been broken in and searched through by the Germans. The man had built the secret room into the back of Corrie s personal bedroom. When he was done, it was completely unnoticeable to the naked eye that there was a hidden room behind her bedroom wall. For months, the 7 Jews (Eusie, Jop, Henk, Leendert, Meta, Thea, and Mary) just slept in it. On February 28th, 1944, the Secret room got its first and only time to actually hide the 7 Jews in the ten Boom household. It seemed, somehow, ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 8. Essay about Drug Legalization Drug Legalization Strong drug enforcement in the United States is correlated with the reduction in crime , drug use, and drug addiction growth rates. The impact on tougher drug sanctions has been overshadowed by a myth that U.S. drug enforcement has become too lenient. This myth has been promoted by the multi million dollar pro drug legalization lobby, civil libertarians, and misguided academic researchers to the public with limited review and challenge. Attacks on drug enforcement efforts often hold law enforcement to impossible and changing performance standards. Law enforcement , treatment , and prevention complement each other. Legalization may lessen the violence surrounding drug dealing , but the real problem is violence resulting from drug use, and this must be addressed with strong law enforcement , substance abuse treatment, prevention and a commitment to change. Anyone who uses marijuana and thinks that quot;pot quot; is not harmful is fooling themselves. The active ingredient THC , is addictive , and users can get just as addicted as they can with nicotine ( cigarettes and chewing tobacco) or alcohol or cocaine. Any tax revenue collected resulting from legalization would be minimal compared to the social cost of addiction. Legalization would create even more clients for an already overburdened treatment system, and at a much higher cost. Treatment is only a part of the price that we pay, we will also be paying for the marijuana users increased health problems, reduced productivity , injuries from auto accidents , and crime. The overwhelming media impact on drug legalization is scary when you think of the impact on young people. Marijuana is the most widely used illicit drug in the United States. The good news is that marijuana use is down slightly according to some recent surveys. Culture can be defined as the way of life of the group of people, which includes beliefs, art, law, morals, customs, and any capabilities and habits acquired by a man as a member of society, and enables people to communicate with others, provides the knowledge and skill necessary, and anticipates how others in society are likely to respond for the actions (Miroshnik, 2002). • 10. Rhetorical Analysis Of Robert F. Kennedy s Speech Robert F. Kennedy was one of the many presidents that aided the Civil Rights Movement to stop racial segregation. Many of our former presidents have given inspiring speeches, but no speech was as awe inspiring as the Remarks on the Assassination of Martin Luther King. The event that brought Kennedy to speak was MLK being shot that night in Memphis, Tennessee. Using emotional tactics, President Kennedy addressed the public, educating them on the direction the United Stateswas headed, as well as, how to deal with racial conflict. Though one of the nation s most influential civil rights activists, Martin Luther King, had been killed, the country has chosen to love one another and feel a sense of empathy for those who suffer. Robert F. Kennedy addressed the public that Martin Luther King Jr. had been assassinated in Memphis, Tennessee (Kennedy 1). • 11. Redemption, Reconstruction, And Recover The three step key to happiness when everything is down is Redemption, Reconstruction, and Recover. Redemption, Reconstruction, and Recover demonstrate how the Reconstruction era prevailed. The Reconstruction era did redeem and reconstruct the United States but did not recover it. However, the United Statesstill hasn t fully recovered because we still struggle with discrimination. • 12. African Women In Colonial Society By Carol Berkin Essays should have organized thoughts, an interesting writing style, and most importantly get the attention of the reader. The essay, African Women in Colonial Society, by Carol Berkin was no exception. The claims were well thought out and clear, and the essay definitely hooked readers in with an anecdote that led into the story quite fittingly. She had three noticeable claims that were major that she talks about in the essay, and that is the struggles of African women, moreso compared to that of a man s, the silver linings that the women found, and finally the unity of the Africans through common languages and religion. For one thing, women struggled with obstacles, that men could not even have. Women took a major role in childbirth, but the malnourished, and overworked women were not in the best condition to have children. Regardless they had many, and that mean a lot of the women and their children would die during birth. They had about three children in their lifetime, and only two would survive. Additionally, the laws back then had no care for the wellbeing of the women. This led to awful laws that actually benefitted the men who would rape and seduce women. Additionally, all of the adjusting they had to do after their arrival really took a toll on them. Once they came to America after their brutal transport through the middle passage, they had to immediately be accustomed to a new language, climate, food, and culture. William Levitt was a main promoter of suburban living, he was contracted by the federal government during the war to quickly build housing for military personnel; Levitt applied the techniques of mass production to construction. In 1947, he set out to erect the largest planned living community in the United States on farmland he had purchased on Long Island, New York. Each house had two bedrooms, one bathroom, and no basement. The kitchen was situated near the back of the house so mothers could keep an eye on their children in the backyard. Within one year, Levitt was building 36 houses per day. His assembly line approach made the houses extremely affordable. At first, the homes were available only to veterans. Eventually, though, Levittown, was open to others as well. By 1960, more Americans lived in suburbs than in cities; because few new homes were built during the war years, the country faced a housing shortage. Group 13 Pamela Castanon Daniel Gage Adriana Tomaylla Gonzalo Lopez Agam Josan WSJ Report 2 Why should shares of Royal Dutch Petroleum Co. and Shell Transport Trading Co. trade lock step with one another ? What does this suggest about market efficiency? In 1907 both companies agreed to combine interests while remaining separate entities, and as a result they share both profits and dividends. However, the divergence between the two companies suggests that there is semi strong market efficiency because there are arbitrage opportunities, most likely due to insider information. What are some of the explanations given in the article for why one company has traded at a premium over the other over time? Explain how these factors affect stock values. Royal Dutch Co. and Shell have combined interests and share the same profits and dividends. However, they exist as separate entities and have distinct stock. Theoretically their stock should trade at the same price, yet one usually trades at a premium over the other. The article explains that this has happened in the past is because throughout the 1970 s Britain imposed limits on dividends. This caused Shell, which is traded on the London Stock Exchange, to be an unattractive stock as it limited capital gains from dividends. Instead investors opted for Royal Dutch, which is traded on the Amsterdam Stock Exchange, because it was not subject to the same limits. As a result, Shell s stock was least valuable. • 51. Antigone Tragedy Analysis Antigone, a play that Sophocles wrote exhibits a tragedy. Several factors determine whether or not Antigone could be put under the category of a tragedy. Greek tragedies consist of three elements: the play includes a catastrophic and inevitable resolution; the protagonist, Antigone, causes all the problems; and finally, the tragic heromust have a tragic flaw or hamartia that leads to the catastrophe. To exemplify a Greek tragedyor drama, Antigone must correspond with the three principal characteristics that define a Greek drama. Antigone, comes to an end with a catastrophic and inevitable death of a young girl. Antigone concluded that her decision to bury her brother, Polyneices, would ultimately result in her demise. If not by her Uncle Creon s hand, then her own: She had made a noose of her fine linen veil and hanged herself (Sophocles 5.959 960). Her demise, resulted from her irascible uncle who made a law preventing the burial of Polyneices, whom he saw as an ignominy. Ultimately fate will always win against free will, and similar to what Antigone said, ... now you can prove what you are: A true sister, or a traitor to your family (Sophocles Prologue.26 27). Her choice remained set in stone, and determined to bury Polyneices, she still not only accepts death but also faces it with honor. The model draws heavily on administrative law doctrines to state that all gradual changes must conform to standards set out in the previous scheme. However, as seen in Arthur Miller s Death of a Salesman and Lorraine Hansberry s A Raisin in the Sun , perverted conceptions of the American Dream convince certain characters that they are entitled to the fruits of miracles. Despite their best intentions for supporting their families, Walter Younger and Willy Loman encounter unsurpassable obstacles and are unable to fulfill their dreams. All the selected metals were present in water, sediments and fish samples from all the study sites. The heavy metal concentration in water does not exceed WHO guidelines. This finding was in agreement with (Ozturk., Ozozen., Minareshi., Minareshi, 2009). Cadmium concentration from Florema, Sher Karuturi, Flamingo and Malewa River exceed the WHO limits for sediments. Discussion already existing. The fish cadmium levels were lower than the WHO standards but the samples taken from Oserian and Sher Karuturi were close recording levels of 0.074 and 0.079 respectively. These high concentrations were attributed to increase in fishing vessels and trawlers that have galvanized metal coating (Mitra., Mitra., Hazra., Chaudhuri, 2000). The heavy metal concentration profile in fish followed the sequence, Cu Pb Cd which was a similar sequence in heavy metal concentration in sediments. This finding is in agreement with the results of the study on heavy metals in fish of Avsar Dam Lake in Turkey (Ozturk., Ozozen., Minareshi., Minareshi, 2009). In fish do not exceed WHO in contrast with (Ozturk., Ozozen., Minareshi., Minareshi, 2009). There was evidence of heavy metal biomagnification as the levels of heavy metals in fish exceeded the concentration in water samples although the metal levels do not exceed WHO and USEPA guidelines. This is in agreement with the findings by Olaifa et al, where the heavy metal concentrations were within safe limits for human consumption. However, this finding is in contrast with other studies, Usman (2011) and Muiruri, (2013) where the heavy metal concentration in fish was beyond the permissible limits and therefore not fit for human consumption (Javed. • 55. A Dream For A World Without Food Labels Essay A Dream for a World Without Food Labels In his essay My Dream Food Label, Mark Bittman makes the case that current food labels, while providing the consumer with ample information, do not indicate whether or not the food contained is really beneficial . Bittman argues that labels should additionally involve clear graphics, such as a traffic light indicating the healthiness of the food, as well as criteria such as hormones, antibiotics, pesticides, etc. These criteria would ideally also include the production of the food, particularly the welfare of the workers and animals involved, and perhaps even the carbon footprint of the food. Bittman ultimately uses such advocacy for food label reform to support his own proposed food label design, equipped with a 15 point color coded scale ranking the food according to its nutrition, as it currently exists, foodiness , or how close the food is to real food , and welfare , or the overall treatment of the workers, animals, and environment. While his arguments for food labels are well intentioned, attempting to address serious issues, Bitman s supposed solutions are highly flawed. Bittman s call for greater awareness, responsibility, and sustainability of the welfare involved with the food industry is admirable. The widespread access to food from all over the world has certainly created great ambiguity around food sources. As a result, food production and transport methods can evade public awareness, individuals ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
