This document discusses Blackboard learning modules and how they can be used to implement the Seven Principles of Good Practice in undergraduate education. It describes how learning modules organize course materials in a logical sequence using tools like content creation, mashups, assessments, and interactive tools. It provides examples of how specific tools like discussions boards, blogs, and virtual classrooms can be used to encourage student-faculty contact, cooperation, active learning, feedback, time on task, high expectations, and respect for diverse talents. While each tool addresses some principles, the document concludes that instructors need to evaluate each tool and content to fully implement the Seven Principles of Good Practice.
2. What is a Learning Module?
• selects information
focused on a specific
subject that has been
designed to provide the
learner a self-directed
format.
• organizes materials in a
logical order allowing
structuring of the
various activities
sequentially.
3. How are Learning Modules Used
Learning Modules are used to create the course
in a logical manner that contains all materials
the student will need to be successful.
Learning Modules can be set up by Units,
Chapters, or topics utilizing a combination of
several (or all) tools available.
7. Quick Review
1. Encourages contact between students and faculty
2. Develops reciprocity and cooperation among
students.
3. Encourages active learning.
4. Gives prompt feedback.
5. Emphasizes time on task.
6. Communicates high expectations.
7. Respects diverse talents and ways of learning.
9. Build Content-Create
Content-any type of file, text, or image
Depending on the information provided many of the
principles can be met using this tool.
• A course outline-time on task & high
expectations
• Text and image-respects diverse learners
10. Build Content-Create
Audio file to play as part of your content.
Add “copyleft” audio sound bites to add an
enhancing element
Principles can be met using this tool:
• Encourages active learning.

• Encourages active learning.
• Respects diverse talents and ways of learning.
12. Build Content -Create
URL-a shortcut to a Web resource.
Provide current events, interactive simulations,
related information, academic journal articles,
practice, opposing point of views, and more.
Principles can be met using this tool:
• Encourages active learning.
• Respects diverse talents and ways of learning.
13. Build Content-Mashups
• Slide Share Presentation-
search for relevant slide
presentations for course
enhancement and never
leave your course.
Principles can be met using
this tool:
• Encourages active learning.
• Respects diverse talents and
ways of learning.
• Basic Communication tools
on Blackboard
• You Tube Video-
search for relevant videos
for course enhancement.

assignments or
tests based on a
teacher’s
benchmark(s)

users interact with
each other in the
same area.

Virtual Classroom- shared online environment are
able to view links, share desktops, exchange files, and
chat.
Principles can be met using this tool:
All 7 principles can be met using this
method.
19. Overview
A Learning Module offers multiple ways to meet
Seven Principles for Good Practice.
However, each tool has limitations and only a
few actually meet all seven principles at one
time. You will need to evaluate each tool and
the content you are delivering to verify….you
are indeed using the principles for good
practice.
Welcome, personal introduction, purpose of session to introduce the Bb LM utilizing the GTP. Don’t forget each piece must be clicked to appear as needed while speaking.
Describe LM as the steps to provide materials normally followed in f2f classroom provides educational opportunity for students to work @ a time that suits their needs not at a designated time/place. Note that LM can vary in size and components used depending on material being covered & available resources, user skills, can be updated or added to at a later date.
Discuss how to develop LM designated to their subject matter and course level. Discuss how to keep it informative, not too lengthy, and evaluate the relevance of available tools for their subject matter.
Quick overview do not linger. Read as they appear and move on unless questions asked.
Intro slide, discuss what materials and methods mentioned in previous slide would be appropriate.
Give brief background of GTP ad lib from memory. Click for each animation and answer
Read as appears on screen
Now everyone knows what they are….how are you going to use that knowledge to develop LM
Give more verbal examples, learning outcomes (poke a little fun.. everyone is so tired of hearing about/writing them) how they tie into time on task & expectations, refer to self fulfilling prophecy, reinforce need for a calendar schedule by date week, don’t have to reinvent everything use what they have in their my docs already, describe different types of images.
Click audio icon for a message from Star Trek’s Dr. Spock. Downloaded from http://www.freeaudioclips.com/Mr.-Spock-(Star-Trek).html
Discuss different learning styles how this directly relates to auditory learners, mention how many open source clips are available from a simple google search.
Image from http://eduscapes.com/tap/topic98.htm further discuss visual learning styles and how this tool relates, once again mention open source images from a simple google search
Image from http://www.freedigitalphotos.net elaborate on slide, mention the many digital resources, (WV DELI, Lib Guides)databases etc available from library
Click hyperlinks to show examples of each…that way this slide is more than just text….more appealing
Discuss how survey’s can utilize knowing your audience, provide feedback at the conclusion of LM
Discuss Peer Assessment student interaction, the need to have clear benchmarks(grading forms, checklist), discuss how self assessment should make students become independent learners, increase motivation, engage in thought.
Importance of conversation in an online environment, discuss resources for DB etiquette, how DB promote sense of being part of a group.
Continue discussion on encouraging student interaction among themselves, instructor reading posts and keeping students on track, providing feedback, how these tools promote thinking skills, let audience guide the different aspects according to their concerns or expertise.
Discuss the wimba tool is available campus wide, training sessions on using the tool are scheduled, how would benefit using to discuss complex topics.
Discuss how each tool is unique, how combined a complete learning experience can be achieved using GTP.
