 Creation of instructional materials, modules, or lessons
 The process consists of:
 determining the needs of the learners
 Defining the end goals and objectives of instruction
 Designing and planning assessment tasks
 Designing teaching and learning activities to ensure the quality of instruction
 Dick and Carey-nine-step model
 ADDIE-help instructors to create meaningful and effective instruction
 Must occur well in advance of the scheduled instruction
 Courses previously taught may need to be reviewed
 Illustrate key concepts or topics
 Encourage interactivity at all sites
 Group work
 Understand the learners in the audience
 What are the students ages
 Level of familiarity of the students with the instructional methods
 How will the students apply the knowledge gained in the course
 Reflect where this content relates to the rest of the curriculum
 Examine the nature of the content
 One issue impacts other planning areas
 Learning context, intended outcome, and nature of the students
 Available resources for creating media ad the technologies for delivery of
instruction
 Course management systems-software systems designed to assist the
management of educational courses for students
 Resources
 What materials will they have at hand?
 What materials will be available in libraries and labs?
 Will students have access to resources
 Concrete reference point for students
 Help learners to simplify information
 Diagrams and charts
 Breaks down complex ideas
 It is essential that the instructor takes the time to plan and organize the learning
experience when engaged in distance learning
