Topic: Biological School of psychology.
Introduction:
Biological perspective is the way of looking at psychological issues by studying
the physical basis of human behaviour. It is one of the major perspectives in
psychology and involves such things as studying brain, immune system, nervous
system and genetics.
Biological psychologists are interested in measuring biological, psychological or
genetic variables in an attempt to relate them to psychological or behavioural
variables, because all behaviour is controlled by the central nervous systems.
Definitions by different author:
 William James- He argued that physiology of brain must be taken into account
in the study of psychology at some degree.
 Rene Descartes- He believed that the pineal gland is where the body and the
mind meet.
 Charles Darwin- Biology is defined as the study of life while psychology
examines the human mind and its process, specially those affecting behaviour.
Factors of biological school of psychology that affect learning
• Gender
• Food
• Genetic
• Personalize i.e health
• Environmental
• Age
Learning
One of the biggest debate in psychology has long centered over the
relative contribution of Nature vs. Nurture
Nature vs. Nurture was coined by English polymath, Francis Galton.
• Nature: “ Nature refers to all the genes and hereditary factors that influence
who we are- from our physical appearance to our personality
characteristics.”
• Nurture: “ Nurture refers to all the environmental variables that impact who
we are, including our early childhood experiences, how we were raised,
our social relationships, and our surrounding culture.”
Biological school of psychology in teaching and learning:
 Psychologists working in this field of education study how people learn and retain
knowledge.
 They apply psychological science to improve the learning process and promote
educational success for all students.
 People don’t only learn at school, they learn at work, in social situation, genetic
inheritance and even doing simple tasks like household chores are running errand.
 The psychology of teaching and learning helps us understands the social, emotional
and cognitive process that constitutes learning throughout the lifespan.

It is one of the major perspectives in psychology and involves such things as studying brain, immune system, nervous system and genetics. Biological psychologists are interested in measuring biological, psychological or genetic variables in an attempt to relate them to psychological or behavioural variables, because all behaviour is controlled by the central nervous systems.

Nature vs. Nurture was coined by English polymath, Francis Galton. • Nature: “ Nature refers to all the genes and hereditary factors that influence who we are- from our physical appearance to our personality characteristics.” • Nurture: “ Nurture refers to all the environmental variables that impact who we are, including our early childhood experiences, how we were raised, our social relationships, and our surrounding culture.”

Biological school of psychology in teaching and learning:  Psychologists working in this field of education study how people learn and retain knowledge.  They apply psychological science to improve the learning process and promote educational success for all students.  People don’t only learn at school, they learn at work, in social situation, genetic inheritance and even doing simple tasks like household chores are running errand.  The psychology of teaching and learning helps us understands the social, emotional and cognitive process that constitutes learning throughout the lifespan.
