• What is Biodegradation
The natural breakdown of
materials by microbes
The natural decomposotion of
organic by microbes
The whole process of
biodegradation is NATURAL
Mechanisms/ Stages of biodegradation
Biodegradation
comprises of ;
Aerobic process
Anaerobic process
1. Aerobic process is the microbial breakdown of
material in presence of Oxygen
It is consist of a set of stages;
Biodeterioration- marks by surface level
deterriotion. eg: biofilm formation
Biofragmentation- disintegration of larger molecules
by microbes
Assimiliation- uptake of organic matters by
microbes. eg: nutrients
Mineralization- transformation of organic matter
into inorganic matter
Mechanisms/ Stages of biodegradation
2. Anaerobic Biodegradation- Degradation of organic matter without oxgen
-contains three stages;
Non-Methanogenic Biodegradation- degration of organic matter with out
the production of biogas, but CO2.
 Methanogenic, Unsteady Biodegradation- the phase of biodegradation
in which acetic acid is produced.
Methanogenic, Steady Biodegradation- the final stage of biodegradation,
in which methane is produced.
Hazardous Waste
Classification of Hazardous waste
Treatment or Management of
Hazardous Waste
1. Produce less of it
2.Biological treatment eg: Geobacter
3.Chemical treatment
4.Physical treatment
Disposal of Hazardous Waste
The options for disposal include land disposal
underground disposal and deep well injection.
The choice of disposal method should be based
on evaluationof economics and potential
pollution risks.
To prevent enviromental pollution from
landfills.
Remedial Action
Temporary removal of the hazardous waste
Construction of a secure landfill on the same site
Proper replacement of the waste.
It may include:
