1, 4-Dichlorimene Lab Report
Benzoic acid and 1,4 dichlorobenzene are extracted from an unknown sample of powder. Both
components are identified by comparing their experimental melting points to known literature values.
Discussion. Extraction is the transfer of a solute from one phase to another. Solubility depends on
polarity, and goes by the rule like dissolves like. Most organic molecules are more soluble in organic
solvents than in water. If the organic solvent is immiscible with water, then when the organic solvent
dissolves organic molecules this solution forms a layer separate from the water layer forming two
layers: an organic layer, and an aqueous layer. When the two layers are mixed together, small amounts
of components from each layer will dissolve in the other layer, establishing an equilibrium between
the two layers. In order to extract solute from solvent A to solvent B, several extractions with small
portions of the solvent B are more efficient than a single extraction with the total ... Show more

Since the unknown powder was known to contain both an organic compound and an acid, we had to
add aqueous sodium hydroxide in order to draw out the acid and its conjugate base into the aqueous
layer. When the base was added to the separatory funnel, it attracted the acid and formed an
immiscible aqueous layer under the liquid layer containing the organic compound. The funnel was
shaken to draw out as much acid as possible, and the aqueous layer was withdrawn from the funnel.
Aqueous sodium hydroxide was added a second time to pull out even more acid that may have
remained in the organic layer, and was withdrawn as well. In hopes of drawing out any remaining acid
from the organic layer, water, a polar substance, was added to the separatory funnel to form a final
aqueous layer that was withdrawn and added to the previous

Gateway Drugs
Gateway Drugs and Common Drug Abuse
The oldest known written record of drug use is a clay tablet from the ancient Sumerian civilization of
the Middle East. This tablet, made in the 2000 s B.C., lists about a dozen drug prescriptions. An
Egyptian scroll from bout 1550 B.C. names more than 800 prescriptions containing about 700 drugs.
The ancient Chinese, Greek and Romans also used many drugs. The Greeks and Romans used opium
to relieve pain. The Egyptians used castor oil as a laxative. The Chinese ate liver to cure anemia. In
the 1500,s and 1600 s, doctors and scientists made important advances in Pharmacology and in other
fields of science. In the early 1500 s, Swiss physician Philippus Paracelsus pioneered in the use of

Bad trips and flashbacks are only part of the risks of LSD use. LSD users may manifest relatively long
lasting psychoses, such as schizophrenia or severe depression. It is difficult to determine the extent
and mechanism of the LSD involvement in these illnesses.

Most users of LSD voluntarily decrease or stop its use over time. LSD is not considered an addictive
drug since it does not produce compulsive drug seeking behavior, as do cocaine, amphetamine, heroin,
alcohol, and nicotine. However, like many of the addictive drugs, LSD produces tolerance, so some
users who take the drug repeatedly must take progressively higher doses to achieve the state of
intoxication that they had previously achieved. This is an extremely dangerous practice, given the
unpredictability of the drug.
MDMA (Ecstasy)
MDMA is a synthetic, psychoactive drug with both stimulant (amphetamine like) and hallucinogenic
(LSD like) properties. Street names for MDMA include Ecstasy, Adam, XTC, hug, beans, and love
drug. Its chemical structure (methylenedioxymethamphetamine, MDMA ) is similar to
methamphetamine, methylenedioxyamphetamine (MDA), and mescaline other synthetic drugs known
to cause brain damage.
MDMA also is neurotoxic. In addition, in high doses it can cause a sharp increase in body temperature
(malignant hyperthermia) leading to muscle breakdown and kidney and cardiovascular system failure.
Brain imaging research in humans indicates that MDMA causes injury to the

China s Drive Toward Ecological Civilization
Moreover, China s drive toward ecological civilization will have far reaching global impacts and
relevance in fundamentally resolving deep rooted problems in environment and development. Taking
improving environmental quality as our core task, we ve put in place the most stringent environmental
protection system; launched comprehensive campaigns on air, water, and soil pollution prevention and
control; enhanced enforcement of laws and regulations; accelerated and deepened reforms; promoted a
green way of life and production and provided more quality ecological products for the people. These
measures will yield a beautiful China with blue sky, fresh air, and clean soil.
Meanwhile, we are also keenly aware of the significance of innovation in pursuit of sustainable
development, especially in two dimensions.
First is innovative thinking. The mind guides the individual s actions, and the actions shape the future.
The key is to give equal emphasis to both knowledge and actions, and to let actions speak louder than
words. But in reality, to do is difficult while to know is easy. Achieving sustainable development is no
exception. We need to foster a favorable environment to mobilize society and encourage everyone to
take actions voluntarily and consciously. Sustainable development will require a sustainable way of
thinking about production, consumption, development, and management to help people consciously
change their behaviors. If everyone adopts the extravagant lifestyle and

Sklovsky Art As Device Essay
Viktor Shklovsky: Art as Technique or Art as Device Viktor Borisovich Shklovsky (1893 1984) was
one of the founders of the intellectual movement OPOJAZ (Obščestvo izučenija Poètičeskogo
Jazyka), translated as Society for the Study of Poetic Language . Furthermore, Shklovsky was a
formalist and closely tied to Russian Formalism; Shklovsky, Boris Eichenbaum, [Vladimir Propp],
Yary Tynyanov, and other Formalists sought to put literary theory on a par with the natural sciences
(Davis 51). For one thing, these gentlemen sought to understand art by breaking it down into parts and
identifying the different devices in play, collections of devices that interact in a textual field (Davis
51). It was in 1917 that Shklovsky, at an astonishing ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

As Daniel Gunn stated it was Shklovsky who felt that: Familiarity is our enemy, [...], and the idea of
defamiliarization reminds us of the way art requires an intensity of perception forces us to look again,
to see, almost for the first time (28). To thoroughly illustrate his idea of defamiliarization Shklovsky
uses an example of his favourite author Leo Tolstoy, his story Kholstomer is narrated by a horse, of
which Teodor Mladenov says; Human relations are seen through the eyes of a horse, which
defamiliarizes the institution of private property, illuminating its conventional and contingent
character (545). Shklovsky s example highlights the significance of defamiliarization, and German
philosopher Martin Heidegger even claims that: One needs to experience the world as uncanny
(unheimlich, which also means unhomely ) in order to be freed from the internalized and automatized
clichés of the publicly accepted norms of conduct (Mladenov 545). It is quite apparent that Shklovsky
admired Leo Tolstoy and his ability to use his method of seeing things out of their normal context

Throughout the film Malcolm Crowe (Bruce Willis) along with many other characters, are shadowed
along with the surroundings in the scene. Shyamalan ensures the fated situation by hanging a dark
cloud casting a shadow over the deceased characters head. However, once they have fulfilled their
destiny the scene as well as their physical bodies is casted a new light that is brighter and more clam.
Shyamalan uses many different lighting techniques that allow the viewer to pick up on subtle hints
that progress the evolvement of the storyline and theme. One example of this is when a new light is
shed on Malcolm s situation that shows the personal battles he is fighting along with the battle of
keeping his marriage intact. In the shot Malcolm s face is only lite by a candle, however his wife

Crime Against Humanity
A crime against humanity is widespread or systematic attacks against a civilian population. Crimes
against humanity is a problem that has repeated itself through history and is still occurring in the
present world today. How countries, that are in a place of power, should or should not respond to these
crimes is a controversial issue that numerous people differ on opinion. Some argue that nations should
act according to their own national interest and do what is best for their country, including not doing
anything at all. Other s have a belief in which countries that are in a place to intervene should do so.
This could be with a forceful militaristic approach. Any crime against humanity should not be
tolerated in this view. Another opinion is that in crisis situations, a collective effort by an international
community, such as the United Nations, should be the people who respond and resolve the conflict.
This takes out individualizing countries, and creates an international effort. Over the course of history
many diverse actions have been taken in response to a crime against humanity. Some examples as to
why an international community or a country should intervene with full force and right away are
through the Ukraine Famine, the Rwandan Genocide, and the Armenian Genocide.
What is known as the Ukraine Famine was a crisis in which no outside force responded to help the
Ukrainians. When Stalin rose to power as the leader of the Soviet Union, one of his first actions was to

Bringing Back the Big Guns A Star Wars: The Force Awakens Analysis
It s true the Force, the Jedi, all of it. It s all true (Harrison Ford, The Force Awakens). The new Star
Wars flick The Force Awakens burst onto the big screen with enormous critical and monetary success
this past winter, and it seems that the franchise has truly been revived from the overall upsets of the
prequels back to its epic roots in pop culture. But does the movie really hold up compared to the
original trilogy? Indeed, the film shines through its engaging plot, important themes and flawless
technique.
The Force Awakens is very similar in plot to A New Hope, but there are plenty of interesting twists.
The movie starts off on the desert planet of Jakku. Poe, a rebel fighter, is taken into custody by the big
bad of the film Kylo Ren. However, Finn, one of the First Order s stormtroopers, helps him to escape
Ren s ship and they crash land on Jakku. With Poe seemingly killed in the crash, Finn wanders into
town and meets our main heroine, Rey, who is a scavenger fending for herself on Jakku. Rey has
found a BB 8 droid belonging to Poe and the Rebel Alliance with a map piece leading to the missing
Jedi Luke Skywalker. Finn lies to Rey about being a rebel fighter to escape Jakku with her. On their
journey towards the Rebel Alliance, the two encounter friends and foes alike, and Rey ends up
captured by Ren due to her awakened Force powers. With the help of the

Examples Of Normative Conformity
Normative conformity is conformity that occurs because of the desire to be liked and accepted. Most
people probably think of peer pressure amongst teens when they think of normative conformity, and
for good reason. Most teens and pre teens are particularly vulnerable to influence because they long to
be accepted by their peers. I m sure when you were a teenager you heard the phrase, If all of your
friends jumped off a bridge, would you do it, too? Peer pressure is certainly a good example of
normative conformity, but it happens to adults, too.
For example, have you ever attended a performance that was, at best, mediocre? Maybe it was a play
you saw, and you thought it was just okay. However, at the end of the play, several people around you
may have stood while clapping. It wouldn t take very long for every person in the auditorium,
including you, to participate in the standing ovation. Even though you didn t think the performance
was necessarily deserving of the praise, you joined in rather than remaining seated, so you wouldn t
stand out like a sore thumb. Standing ovations, peer pressure, fashion trends, body image, and
following traditions are just a few examples of normative conformity.

How United States Made the Miracle:
The Great Strategy in the Battle of Midway
Battle of Midway was one of the most famous battles in World War II, was the best navel warfare that
United States Navy had ever won. A lot of people like to call it a Miracle at Midway. It changed the
war situation of the Pacific Ocean Battle. After this battle, the Empire of Japan lost the superiority in
the Ocean.
Due to the troubles in China, and the economic sanctions form the United States and Europe; Japan
had to find more resources to support the war. After rejected the requirements of Western World, Japan
started to target Southeast Asia. Meanwhile, to defeat America in the Pacific Ocean became the most
important strategy.
On 7th December 1941, Japan launched a major surprise carrier based air strike on Pearl Harbor
without explicit warning, which crippled the United States Pacific Fleet, leaving eight American
battleships out of action, 188 American aircraft destroyed, and 2,403 American citizens dead.
In the spring of 1942, a few months after the attack on Pearl Harbor, the Empire of Japan planned to
attack southern New Guinea, to knock Australia and New Zealand. The Allies, including the United
States, and Australia, assembled a large fleet in the Coral Sea to block the Empire of Japan. After
several days of searching and fighting, the Japanese and Allied fleets found each other on May 8 and

Social Darwinism In The Mayor Of Casterbridge
Upon returning from his voyage, renowned scientist Charles Darwin published his findings on his
theory of survival of the fittest . He claimed that the most powerful ascend higher on the scale of
survival, whereas the disadvantaged and weak remain at the bottom. A few decades later, this concept
was adapted to apply to social, economic and political issues a term which later was coined as Social
Darwinism. This phenomenon was the basis for the explanation of why certain individuals accumulate
success and triumph over others. The theories of Darwin s work can be applied in literature as well,
especially in The Mayor of Casterbridge. In this case, the strength of an individual was dependent on
their reputation and social rankings. This placed females at a disadvantage, due to the patriarchal
standards and oppression, as well as those who were morally unjust and disliked throughout the
community, such as Henchard. Once engulfed in the classification as unfit , demise and suffering is no
longer a force that can be controlled and evaded by human actions. In his novel, The Mayor of
Casterbridge, Thomas Hardy applies the theories of Social Darwinism to prove that suffering is
inevitable among the morally and socially weak and disliked through the recurring symbolism of
animals, the unpredictable weather, and Lucetta s demise. The inclusion of various animals in Hardy s
novel serve a deeper purpose than as livestock in the agrarian society of Casterbridge; they are
symbolic

Environmental History Of The Oceans And Seas
Environmental history of the oceans and seas are daunting topics, either because of the vastness of the
oceans and seas, the artificial boundaries, or their seemingly changelessness. Until about 1990, with
Arthur McEvoy s The Fisherman s Problem: Ecology and the Law in California Fisheries, 1850 1980,
historians largely ignored marine ecosystems as areas of research. Focusing instead on inland

these scholars challenge the supposedly superior ecological wisdom of non Western and precolonial

so they became just that. They fled into the undiscovered wilderness. With man as king the beasts

Myrtle Wilson as the Wasteland Figure in the Great Gatsby
30 November 2007 Myrtle and Fitzgerald s Wasteland Myrtle Wilson is Fitzgerald s vessel for
illustrating the modern wasteland. His conception of the wasteland as an unavoidable, vulgar part of
the 1920s society is parallel to his characterization of Myrtle as an unavoidable, vulgar character that
refuses to be ignored. He uses her to point out what he sees as the faults of modern society. Myrtle is
materialistic, superficial, and stuck living in the physical wasteland referred to as the valley of ashes.

Fitzgerald is showing the shallowness, absurdity, and stupidity of the new money American consumer,
whom he contrasts to old money Tom Buchanan, who is not duped by the puppy vendor like ignorant
Myrtle. Fitzgerald also uses Myrtle to show the lack of compassion and irresponsibility of new money
Americans through Myrtle and the puppy. The puppy is referred to as a purchase (28), which Myrtle
briefly pays attention to but quickly forgets amongst the smoking and drinking, leaving the puppy
with blind eyes through the smoke, and from time to time groaning faintly (37), one of Fitzgerald s
most haunting and vivid images in the text. She haughtily talks about imaginary hired help that is
supposed to take care of her puppy, which is Fitzgerald s criticism of new money parenting and
irresponsibility in modern society. Her self centeredness catches up to her when George discovers the
expensive puppy leash before her death. Next, Fitzgerald utilizes Myrtle s superficiality to exhibit
another facet of the wasteland in modern society. Despite being a member of the lower class, Myrtle
becomes haughty and snobby when she is in the city. Her personality changes when she changes her
clothes to an elaborate afternoon dress of cream colored chiffon her laughter, her gestures, her
assertions became more violently affected moment by moment (30 31). She comes across as an over

Socrates And The Early Athenian Era
Socrates, a well known philosopher of the early Athenian era, is believed to be one of the wisest and
virtuous philosophers of all time. This belief holds true in the encounters of Symposium by Plato, as
depicted by Alcibiades during a symposium held by Agathon. Alcibiades, the last to speak at the
symposium, derails from the topic of the night, love, and elicits much praise and gratitude for
Socrates. Although Alcibiades did not witness the speech given by Socrates on love, he manages to
depict how Socrates endeavors through life with notions that are remarkable to that of what Socrates
mentions during his oral, from which much insight is inspired as to the values of which Socrates
holds.
Socrates is reveled as a man who has no greater desire than to gain more knowledge and holds the
greatest beauty of all in that of knowledge. During Socrates turn during the speeches of love, he
examples what the others have said during their turn and does not discord them, but adds on to reveal
how he himself views these notions. Socrates starts by stating that although the previous accounts on
love were sound, this is not how he views such topics. He goes on to question the members of the
symposium on hard concepts mentioned by those before him and manages to unravel that those who
desire something then does not have that of which is desired. Socrates does not live with desires for
extremes of the spectrum for any topic, but finds an equal medium that allows him to have better

Christian, and Islamic religions Etruscan religion was polytheistic, and gods of the pantheon resided in
sixteen ranges of Etruscan heaven (2006, p. 45). However, according to them
Etruscans believed a revealed religion and they communicated with the deity by gods of the sky, earth

Marginal Cost Revenue
A way to determine the quantity of profit maximization is to conclude where marginal revenue equals
marginal costs. Rather than computing the profit for all levels of sales; total revenue and total variable
costs are considered. Marginal revenues and marginal costs are considered in a similar way like
marginal profit, thus defining the amount of change for all sales levels (Huter, 2012, p.2).
Pricing Non Pricing Strategies
CVS needs to think through numerous elements impacting its business. Pricing strategies, rivals and
their current products, consumer demands and suppliers are examples of these elements. For pricing
strategies, CVS should consider closeouts, discounts, product bundle pricing, penetration pricing,
geographical pricing, and membership or trade pricing. For non pricing strategies, options comprise:
enhanced service quality, longer opening hours, advertising, and extended warranties (Kimmons, n.d.).
By pricing similar products in a different way they must focus on regional demographics because
geographic pricing enables the maximization of profit. For promoting unique or new products at

Vietnam war was going on. The CIA, General Vang Pao, American troops and the Hmong veterans
were fighting against the Lao communist and the Vietnamese soldiers. The Lao communist
government structurally declared genocide on the Hmong. They came to every Hmong village that
thought supported the Americans. The communist slaughtered, burned, and raped the Hmongs. The
war was kept secret by the American Government because the CIA didn t have permission to go to
Laos, but Vietnam. Reason why the war was called the Secret war
General Vang Pao was born in the Nonghet, Xiangkhouang in the region of Laos on December 8th,
1929. During his teenage years he fought in the world war 2 because Japan was trying to take over
Laos. In the 1950 s, he joined with the French in the war against the North Vietnamese who were
trying to subjugate Laos. Later then he was recruited by the CIA (Central Intelligence Agency) while
there was a war going on near the mountains in Laos against the Pathet Laos, and people s army of

Use Life Insurance
How to Use Life Insurance to Fund Your Retirement
We are taught many things about money while growing up. Ever since we got our first piggy bank, our
parents tried to teach us the importance of saving money. Mostly, we just saved it until we had enough
to buy what it was that we were saving for, be it that cool GI Joe or Barbie doll. As we got older and
got our first jobs, our parents encouraged us further by making sure we had a savings account and
helping us figure out how much we should be saving, whether it be for college or for our first car.
As we got even older and entered into the realm of adulthood, we needed to save for weddings,
houses, children and retirement. Retirement is definitely the farthest removed, but the importance of ...

While there are good times, there are also bad times. The problem is you have no way of knowing to
get out before it gets bad. So what can you do? Where is the best place to put aside money for your
future that will grow as predicted and be shielded from the problems of the stock market? A place
where you don t have to worry about how taxes are going to affect it or punish you? You should
consider life insurance as a supplement retirement income.
Whole life insurance or indexed universal life insurance has a cash value to it that can be greatly
beneficial to you in the future by paying out. Mainstream financial advice pretty much ignores this use
of life insurance, but does depict it as a necessary expense. The viewpoint of using it for death benefits
is more often cited as a reason to get life insurance, but you can also use it to fund your future.

Dissection Of Easter Morning By Robert Frost
Dissection of Easter Morning The poem Easter Morning is a part of the poetry produced by A.R.
Ammons in 1981. A.R. Ammons was interested in the sciences but also held a love for literature. He
liked to involve nature in his work. Easter Morning is very abstract, has tropes that further the images
presented, and is not confined to form. The perception of human ambiguities and abstract possibilities
in homely bits of nature may have originated in Robert Frost. (N.A. 288) His work like most other
authors of his time is influenced by others like Robert Frost and William Carlos Williams. This poem
is heavily influenced by Robert Frost. Frost likes to create poetry that helps you bring some meaning
out of a situation presented in nature. For close inspection, the form, sentence structures, and syntax
are a highlight of what he wants to convey to the reader. Easter Morning is in written free verse and
divided into verse paragraphs. (enotes.com) Along with the other literary figures of his time that have
an influence on his work, this poem is truly free verse. It doesn t have any syllabic pattern, or run on
sentences. The syntax is very clear, coherent. It is almost childlike in its simplicity. This adds to the
overall feeling Ammons wants to convey to the reader. The sentence structure is very precise. He
leaves some words all alone that are to cause a break in the reading. They also leave the reader
thinking why he did that. ...all in the graveyard assembled, done for,

Judge Haselton s Case Summary
In May of 1998, Kipland Kinkel brought a gun to his school. Over the course of two days this
escalated from: being sent home, to murdering his father and mother, to murdering 2 students and
wounding 26, earning a lifetime sentence of 111 years and 8 months in prison. In the court case being
examined, the presiding judge addresses the original case, defendants ground for appeal, and the
justification for the State s decision to deny the appeal. Judge Haselton effectively uses ethos, logos,
and pathos to support the Higher Court s decision to deny the appeal because the original sentence was
constitutional and just. Summary In State of Oregon v. Kipland Kinkel, Judge Haselton summarizes
the decision to deny Kinkel s appeal of his sentencing. Kinkel was sentenced by the Lower Court to
111 years and 8 months for the confession of 4 murders and 25 accounts of attempted murder. Several
medical personal and parents testified against Kinkel at the hearing stating that, he is and remains
dangerous, (para. 15). The defense s grounds for appeal consist of the sentencing being cruel and
unusual and that the protection of society was considered more than reformation. The higher court
denied it was cruel and unusual because it did not shock the conscience. The presiding judge also
denied that reformation was of higher significance than the protection of society because there were

Neanderthals Essay
While there were many genetic differences found between Neanderthal and modern human DNA,
there was also a number of genetic overlap. Genomes were taken and sequenced from Africans, New
Guinean, Han Chinese, and French (Green et al. 2010). Genetic overlap and similarity was found
among the French, New Guinean, and Han Chinese but there was no significant similarity found
between the African genomes (Green et al. 2010). In addition, data was taken based on haplotypic
differences. If there was considerable gene flow from Neanderthals to modern humans, it would be
suspected that there would be similarities between Neanderthals and non African haplotypes when

Through previous studies, it has been suspected that Neanderthals, who are a close common ancestor
to modern humans, lived in parts of Asia and Europe. Speculations surrounding whether or not
modern humans interbred or simply co existed with Neanderthals has been a highly regarded topic. If
interbreeding did occur, it would suggest that modern humans did in fact partly evolve from genetic
variations with Neanderthals. In one study, this question is explored even further using information
from the Neanderthal genome (Wall et al. 2013). Data was gathered based on admixture
(interbreeding) rates between Neanderthals, East Asians, and Europeans using the Denisova genome
(bone fragments found in the mountains of Siberia and Russia) (Wall et al. 2013). After comparison,
the results found varying admixture rates among the different populations. For example, the rate of
admixture was 40% higher with East Asians than Europeans (Wall et al. 2013). Due to varying
admixture rates, it can be suggested that Neanderthals did not all at once interbreed with Europeans
and Asians, but this interbreeding occurred during separate times resulting in different

3. What changes are seen in nephron function when the valve is closed?

Marc Girondin had worked in the filing section of the city hall s engineering department for so long

In all Montreal no one possessed such knowledge; a dozen policemen and taxi drivers together could
not rival him. That is not to say that he actually knew the streets whose names he could recite like a
series of incantations, for he did little walking. He knew simply of their existence, where they were,
and in what relation they stood to others.
But it was enough to make him a specialist. He was undisputed expert of the filing cabinets where all
the particulars of all the streets from Abbott to Zotique were indexed, back, forward and across. Those
aristocrats, the engineers, the inspectors of water mains and the like, all came to him when they
wanted some little particular, some detail, in a hurry They might despise him as a lowly clerk, but they

H.W. Liao, M. Takao, D.M. Berson, K.W. Yau 1. What is the objective/hypothesis/question of this
study? (1 point) The objective of this study is to investigate the molecular mechanisms responsible for
non image forming visual responses, such as the coordination of the biological clock. Because retinal
rod and cone cells are not required for non image forming visual responses, the researchers
hypothesized that retinal ganglion cells (RGC) may be the light sensitive cells utilized in the non
image forming visual response pathway. The researchers also hypothesized that if the RGCs are light
sensitive, then the protein melanopsin, which is found on the surface of RGCs, is likely the
photopigment that causes RGCs to respond to light. 2. What is the rationale and relevance of the
question? (1 point) This study is important because it allows us to better understand the mechanisms
that regulate essential biological functions such as pupil control and circadian rhythm. This research is
especially relevant to those who suffer from certain disorders that disrupt normal biological responses
and functions, such as hypernychthemeral syndrome. Hypernychthemeral syndrome, or Non24, is

Commentary on Like Water for Chocolate by Laura Esquivel
The novel Like Water for Chocolate is the story of a woman fighting tradition in quest for love and
freedom. The novel has diverse relations of apathy and love between the characters. The author
Esquivel illustrates these relations by the use of the colors red and white. Throughout the novel Like
Water for Chocolate, Laura Esquivel uses the colors red and white to symbolize love and apathy in the
relationships between the characters.

see the love in the marriage between Pedro and Rosaura since the marriage was arranged. What she
sees is the white icing of the cake that represents marriage, but not the red food coloring that
represents love. These two quotes both exhibit red being used as a symbol for love and passion.
Laura Esquivel also uses the color white, which represents apathy to contrast the feeling for love,
represented by the color red. Tita stood as if in a trance, starting at the whiteness of the sheets, only for
a few seconds. But long enough to cause a sort of blindness, wherever she looked she saw only white.
When she looked at Rosaura who was writing out some invitations she saw only a snowy ghost . This
quote also shows that Tita is fully aware that there is no love between Pedro and Rosaura. The quote
states that Tita was being blinded by the color white, because she can t accept that fact that her love is
going to marry her sister even though they do not love each other. Rosaura, who is the bride seemed
like a white snowy ghost to Tita because Pedro did not love her and she doesn t love Pedro.
In the next quote Laura Esquivel integrates both the colors red and white in one paragraph to

The Chrysler and the Seagram Building are alike in that they are both iconic symbols of architecture
in America. However, that is where the similarities end. Walter Chrysler wanted the Chrysler Building
to be the tallest in the world and also to make a bold statement, to show his wealth and fortune. Even
though they were both designed to be office buildings, the Seagram Building was designed with a
much more functional look in mind.
The Chrysler Building, located in Manhattan, New York, was designed by William Van Alen. It is
constructed out of steel and brick and stands at a staggering 1,046 feet tall. For a short time, it was the
tallest building in the world. This Art Deco skyscraper is heavily ornamented with objects reminiscent

The Sound of Music is one of the most favorite musical film movies of all time. The movie was first
introduced to the audience in 1965, and it received popular attention from the public and five

with the seven children and the naval officer widower, Captain Georg Von Trapp. In 2013, NBC

Development Of A Mentoring Program
Hybrid Assignment 3
In today s volatile business world, it is vital for organizations to engage employees both intellectually
and emotionally. Through mentoring, employees identify themselves as a vital part of the organization
while creating a heightened level of ownership. Mentoring programs are of great value to any
company. In most cases, these programs are considered essential. By developing and implementing a
mentoring program, the learning process for employees is accelerated. It is said that mentoring can
accomplish things that training cannot (Johnson). Even though, developing a mentoring program is not
an easy task, the benefits outweigh the challenges. A mentoring program will help alleviate high
employee turnover and assist in building a pipeline of diverse employees.
The development of a mentoring program begins by deciding on whether it should be a formal or
informal program. On one hand, a formal mentoring program includes 1. Connection to a strategic
business objective of the organization 2. Established goals 3. Measurable outcomes 4. Expert training
and support 4. Direct organizational benefits and 5. Mentoring engagements lasting 9 12 months (
Business mentoring matters , 2012). On the other hand, an informal mentoring program includes: 1.
Unspecified goals 2. Unknown outcomes 3. Self selection of mentors and mentees 4. No expert
training or support 5. Long term mentorship and 6. Indirect organizational benefits ( Business
mentoring matters , 2012).

The Ramifications Of Population Growth
THE RAMIFICATIONS OF POPULATION GROWTH
Global human population is mounting at an alarming rate. In fact, in the next fifteen years, it is
expected to reach 8.5 billion. Even if a worldwide policy of two children per couple, instead of the
current 2.8, were enacted tomorrow, the global population would continue to grow for about seventy
years before stabilizing at about thirteen billion people (Pimentel, 155). The ramifications of such
growth could be catastrophic. Overpopulation contributes to a multitude of problems such as the
degradation of environmental quality, the depletion of natural resources, the spread of disease, and an
escalation in crime and conflict.
The sheer number of people leeching off of the earth undermines environmental quality. But beyond
that is the fact that individuals are consuming more. According to Thomas Friedman s book Hot, Flat,
and Crowded, there is not only an increasing global population, but also a growing number of people
demanding a middle class lifestyle. So not only do you have more people demanding resources, but
you also have people demanding more resources. Friedman blames this phenomenon for the rise in
global temperatures (Friedman, 8). Human life puts a massive strain on natural resources. Consider
food production, alone. The agriculture needed to support the current 7.1 billion people on earth
requires about 500,000 gallons of freshwater per acre and enormous amounts of fossil fuel for inputs
such as fertilizer and machinery

Anti feminist views through the novel of The Brief Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao In recent discussions,
the novels The Brief Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao by Junot Diaz, has given rise to a controversial
question: whether women should be labeled as incomplete and an uncertainty without men. At the
same time, some have argued and questioned the intention of the two authors i.e., whether they hold
any respect for women, at all. In fact, there has been a collective attempt to convey that men can
control women, and by controlling them (women), men are able to regulate love itself, and keep them
protected , as can be seen through these authors methodical choice of words such as bitch , raging ,
useless woman , fea , idiota , vividness and worthless . Moreover, though initially it may appear that
both aforementioned authors have taken a defensive stance when they label women as imperfect
human beings, setting the boundaries, and painting women as a disparaging object, in reality, however,
the said authors are heavily afflicted by thoughts of death, rendering them to be in a constant internal
conflict amongst themselves, in search of love, leaving us to further question whether their hostility
towards women is from an obdurate standpoint, wounded by personal experience, or are they just
merely trying to hypnotize their readers by confining the latter to only see 20th century s society
through his eyes. In this regard, my personal view is that not only do this novel shed light on the past
and immortality, but it is also undeniable that the idea of time and death constantly haunt the author,
adversely influencing his personal fears, rendering the latter to be subjective. Nonetheless, though it is
conceded that Diaz is power hungry for a superior status, i.e., dominance and power over his lovers, I
believe that the author finds comfort when he is able to vent out his actual feelings through the novel,
using ambiguous words, to channel his grievance as an act of voice against his individual
circumstance, the latter as it was experienced in his conservative era. In fact, the author has been open
to criticism and subject of much debate in recent times. As Diaz says, The dyad of Yunior and Oscar
drives much of what

  • 2. 1, 4-Dichlorimene Lab Report Benzoic acid and 1,4 dichlorobenzene are extracted from an unknown sample of powder. Both components are identified by comparing their experimental melting points to known literature values. Discussion. Extraction is the transfer of a solute from one phase to another. Solubility depends on polarity, and goes by the rule like dissolves like. Most organic molecules are more soluble in organic solvents than in water. If the organic solvent is immiscible with water, then when the organic solvent dissolves organic molecules this solution forms a layer separate from the water layer forming two layers: an organic layer, and an aqueous layer. When the two layers are mixed together, small amounts of components from each layer will dissolve in the other layer, establishing an equilibrium between the two layers. In order to extract solute from solvent A to solvent B, several extractions with small portions of the solvent B are more efficient than a single extraction with the total ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Since the unknown powder was known to contain both an organic compound and an acid, we had to add aqueous sodium hydroxide in order to draw out the acid and its conjugate base into the aqueous layer. When the base was added to the separatory funnel, it attracted the acid and formed an immiscible aqueous layer under the liquid layer containing the organic compound. The funnel was shaken to draw out as much acid as possible, and the aqueous layer was withdrawn from the funnel. Aqueous sodium hydroxide was added a second time to pull out even more acid that may have remained in the organic layer, and was withdrawn as well. In hopes of drawing out any remaining acid from the organic layer, water, a polar substance, was added to the separatory funnel to form a final aqueous layer that was withdrawn and added to the previous ... This tablet, made in the 2000 s B.C., lists about a dozen drug prescriptions. An Egyptian scroll from bout 1550 B.C. names more than 800 prescriptions containing about 700 drugs. The ancient Chinese, Greek and Romans also used many drugs. The Greeks and Romans used opium to relieve pain. The Egyptians used castor oil as a laxative. The Chinese ate liver to cure anemia. In the 1500,s and 1600 s, doctors and scientists made important advances in Pharmacology and in other fields of science. LSD users may manifest relatively long lasting psychoses, such as schizophrenia or severe depression. It is difficult to determine the extent and mechanism of the LSD involvement in these illnesses. Schreiber 3 Most users of LSD voluntarily decrease or stop its use over time. LSD is not considered an addictive drug since it does not produce compulsive drug seeking behavior, as do cocaine, amphetamine, heroin, alcohol, and nicotine. However, like many of the addictive drugs, LSD produces tolerance, so some users who take the drug repeatedly must take progressively higher doses to achieve the state of intoxication that they had previously achieved. This is an extremely dangerous practice, given the unpredictability of the drug. MDMA (Ecstasy) MDMA is a synthetic, psychoactive drug with both stimulant (amphetamine like) and hallucinogenic (LSD like) properties. Street names for MDMA include Ecstasy, Adam, XTC, hug, beans, and love drug. Its chemical structure (methylenedioxymethamphetamine, MDMA ) is similar to methamphetamine, methylenedioxyamphetamine (MDA), and mescaline other synthetic drugs known to cause brain damage. MDMA also is neurotoxic. In addition, in high doses it can cause a sharp increase in body temperature (malignant hyperthermia) leading to muscle breakdown and kidney and cardiovascular system failure. Brain imaging research in humans indicates that MDMA causes injury to the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 4. China s Drive Toward Ecological Civilization Moreover, China s drive toward ecological civilization will have far reaching global impacts and relevance in fundamentally resolving deep rooted problems in environment and development. Taking improving environmental quality as our core task, we ve put in place the most stringent environmental protection system; launched comprehensive campaigns on air, water, and soil pollution prevention and control; enhanced enforcement of laws and regulations; accelerated and deepened reforms; promoted a green way of life and production and provided more quality ecological products for the people. These measures will yield a beautiful China with blue sky, fresh air, and clean soil. Meanwhile, we are also keenly aware of the significance of innovation in pursuit of sustainable development, especially in two dimensions. First is innovative thinking. The mind guides the individual s actions, and the actions shape the future. The key is to give equal emphasis to both knowledge and actions, and to let actions speak louder than words. But in reality, to do is difficult while to know is easy. Achieving sustainable development is no exception. We need to foster a favorable environment to mobilize society and encourage everyone to take actions voluntarily and consciously. Sustainable development will require a sustainable way of thinking about production, consumption, development, and management to help people consciously change their behaviors. If everyone adopts the extravagant lifestyle and ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Sklovsky Art As Device Essay Viktor Shklovsky: Art as Technique or Art as Device Viktor Borisovich Shklovsky (1893 1984) was one of the founders of the intellectual movement OPOJAZ (Obščestvo izučenija Poètičeskogo Jazyka), translated as Society for the Study of Poetic Language . Furthermore, Shklovsky was a formalist and closely tied to Russian Formalism; Shklovsky, Boris Eichenbaum, [Vladimir Propp], Yary Tynyanov, and other Formalists sought to put literary theory on a par with the natural sciences (Davis 51). For one thing, these gentlemen sought to understand art by breaking it down into parts and identifying the different devices in play, collections of devices that interact in a textual field (Davis 51). As Daniel Gunn stated it was Shklovsky who felt that: Familiarity is our enemy, [...], and the idea of defamiliarization reminds us of the way art requires an intensity of perception forces us to look again, to see, almost for the first time (28). To thoroughly illustrate his idea of defamiliarization Shklovsky uses an example of his favourite author Leo Tolstoy, his story Kholstomer is narrated by a horse, of which Teodor Mladenov says; Human relations are seen through the eyes of a horse, which defamiliarizes the institution of private property, illuminating its conventional and contingent character (545). Shklovsky s example highlights the significance of defamiliarization, and German philosopher Martin Heidegger even claims that: One needs to experience the world as uncanny (unheimlich, which also means unhomely ) in order to be freed from the internalized and automatized clichés of the publicly accepted norms of conduct (Mladenov 545). Throughout the film Malcolm Crowe (Bruce Willis) along with many other characters, are shadowed along with the surroundings in the scene. Shyamalan ensures the fated situation by hanging a dark cloud casting a shadow over the deceased characters head. However, once they have fulfilled their destiny the scene as well as their physical bodies is casted a new light that is brighter and more clam. Shyamalan uses many different lighting techniques that allow the viewer to pick up on subtle hints that progress the evolvement of the storyline and theme. One example of this is when a new light is shed on Malcolm s situation that shows the personal battles he is fighting along with the battle of keeping his marriage intact. In the shot Malcolm s face is only lite by a candle, however his wife Ana(Olivia Williams) is fully lite. While Malcolm carries on with his monologue about his new patient,Cole, his figure remains poorly lit and you are never able to see his eye color, like you could Ana s,(Shyamalan,28:30). This scene is crucial because of the lighting, it shows the fulfillment of each character s life. • 7. Crime Against Humanity A crime against humanity is widespread or systematic attacks against a civilian population. Crimes against humanity is a problem that has repeated itself through history and is still occurring in the present world today. How countries, that are in a place of power, should or should not respond to these crimes is a controversial issue that numerous people differ on opinion. Some argue that nations should act according to their own national interest and do what is best for their country, including not doing anything at all. Other s have a belief in which countries that are in a place to intervene should do so. This could be with a forceful militaristic approach. Any crime against humanity should not be tolerated in this view. Another opinion is that in crisis situations, a collective effort by an international community, such as the United Nations, should be the people who respond and resolve the conflict. This takes out individualizing countries, and creates an international effort. Over the course of history many diverse actions have been taken in response to a crime against humanity. Some examples as to why an international community or a country should intervene with full force and right away are through the Ukraine Famine, the Rwandan Genocide, and the Armenian Genocide. What is known as the Ukraine Famine was a crisis in which no outside force responded to help the Ukrainians. It s all true (Harrison Ford, The Force Awakens). The new Star Wars flick The Force Awakens burst onto the big screen with enormous critical and monetary success this past winter, and it seems that the franchise has truly been revived from the overall upsets of the prequels back to its epic roots in pop culture. But does the movie really hold up compared to the original trilogy? Indeed, the film shines through its engaging plot, important themes and flawless technique. The Force Awakens is very similar in plot to A New Hope, but there are plenty of interesting twists. The movie starts off on the desert planet of Jakku. Poe, a rebel fighter, is taken into custody by the big bad of the film Kylo Ren. However, Finn, one of the First Order s stormtroopers, helps him to escape Ren s ship and they crash land on Jakku. With Poe seemingly killed in the crash, Finn wanders into town and meets our main heroine, Rey, who is a scavenger fending for herself on Jakku. Rey has found a BB 8 droid belonging to Poe and the Rebel Alliance with a map piece leading to the missing Jedi Luke Skywalker. Finn lies to Rey about being a rebel fighter to escape Jakku with her. On their journey towards the Rebel Alliance, the two encounter friends and foes alike, and Rey ends up captured by Ren due to her awakened Force powers. With the help of the ... Most people probably think of peer pressure amongst teens when they think of normative conformity, and for good reason. Most teens and pre teens are particularly vulnerable to influence because they long to be accepted by their peers. I m sure when you were a teenager you heard the phrase, If all of your friends jumped off a bridge, would you do it, too? Peer pressure is certainly a good example of normative conformity, but it happens to adults, too. For example, have you ever attended a performance that was, at best, mediocre? Maybe it was a play you saw, and you thought it was just okay. However, at the end of the play, several people around you may have stood while clapping. It wouldn t take very long for every person in the auditorium, including you, to participate in the standing ovation. Even though you didn t think the performance was necessarily deserving of the praise, you joined in rather than remaining seated, so you wouldn t stand out like a sore thumb. Standing ovations, peer pressure, fashion trends, body image, and following traditions are just a few examples of normative conformity. Informational Conformity ... • 12. Social Darwinism In The Mayor Of Casterbridge Upon returning from his voyage, renowned scientist Charles Darwin published his findings on his theory of survival of the fittest . He claimed that the most powerful ascend higher on the scale of survival, whereas the disadvantaged and weak remain at the bottom. A few decades later, this concept was adapted to apply to social, economic and political issues a term which later was coined as Social Darwinism. This phenomenon was the basis for the explanation of why certain individuals accumulate success and triumph over others. The theories of Darwin s work can be applied in literature as well, especially in The Mayor of Casterbridge. In this case, the strength of an individual was dependent on their reputation and social rankings. This placed females at a disadvantage, due to the patriarchal standards and oppression, as well as those who were morally unjust and disliked throughout the community, such as Henchard. Once engulfed in the classification as unfit , demise and suffering is no longer a force that can be controlled and evaded by human actions. In his novel, The Mayor of Casterbridge, Thomas Hardy applies the theories of Social Darwinism to prove that suffering is inevitable among the morally and socially weak and disliked through the recurring symbolism of animals, the unpredictable weather, and Lucetta s demise. The inclusion of various animals in Hardy s novel serve a deeper purpose than as livestock in the agrarian society of Casterbridge; they are symbolic ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

That is not to say that he actually knew the streets whose names he could recite like a series of incantations, for he did little walking. Marc much preferred his office, despite the profound lack of excitement of his work, to his room on Oven Street (running north and south from Sherbrooke East to St. Catherine), where his ... • 35. Informative Speech On Magic For centuries, man has been using a combination of smoke, mirrors, and sleight of hand to wow his fellow man with illusions and supposed feats of magic. For a long time, these tricks had to be performed in secret because they were forbidden by ruling powers and those who were found to be practicing what was believed to be black magic were sentenced to death and were usually executed by being burned at the stake. By the early 20th century, however, the public s attitude towards magic had changed for the better and magicians and illusionists were treated as revered entertainers, oftentimes being booked as part of variety shows alongside the most popular singers and comedians of the era. Some even managed to climb the bill to become the headline ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Looking for new swag? Bradley Fleming Primary Literature Report 1 Neurobiology Biol 572 10/24/2016 Melanopsin Containing Retinal Ganglion Cells: Architecture, Projections, and Intrinsic Photosensitivity S. Hattar, H.W. Liao, M. Takao, D.M. Berson, K.W. Yau 1. What is the objective/hypothesis/question of this study? (1 point) The objective of this study is to investigate the molecular mechanisms responsible for non image forming visual responses, such as the coordination of the biological clock. Because retinal rod and cone cells are not required for non image forming visual responses, the researchers hypothesized that retinal ganglion cells (RGC) may be the light sensitive cells utilized in the non image forming visual response pathway. The researchers also hypothesized that if the RGCs are light sensitive, then the protein melanopsin, which is found on the surface of RGCs, is likely the photopigment that causes RGCs to respond to light. 2. What is the rationale and relevance of the question? (1 point) This study is important because it allows us to better understand the mechanisms that regulate essential biological functions such as pupil control and circadian rhythm. This research is especially relevant to those who suffer from certain disorders that disrupt normal biological responses and functions, such as hypernychthemeral syndrome. Hypernychthemeral syndrome, or Non24, is characterized by delays in tiredness as well as continuous shifts in awareness. Non24 is just one of many circadian ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 37. Essay on Commentary on Like Water for Chocolate by Laura... Commentary on Like Water for Chocolate by Laura Esquivel The novel Like Water for Chocolate is the story of a woman fighting tradition in quest for love and freedom. The novel has diverse relations of apathy and love between the characters. The author Esquivel illustrates these relations by the use of the colors red and white. Throughout the novel Like Water for Chocolate, Laura Esquivel uses the colors red and white to symbolize love and apathy in the relationships between the characters. Laura Esquivel uses the color red to symbolize love and passion in relationships. In the following quote Mamma Elena had come to get a sheet or something and had caught Tita red handed. (p. 136) The little ... What she sees is the white icing of the cake that represents marriage, but not the red food coloring that represents love. These two quotes both exhibit red being used as a symbol for love and passion. Laura Esquivel also uses the color white, which represents apathy to contrast the feeling for love, represented by the color red. Tita stood as if in a trance, starting at the whiteness of the sheets, only for a few seconds. But long enough to cause a sort of blindness, wherever she looked she saw only white. When she looked at Rosaura who was writing out some invitations she saw only a snowy ghost . This quote also shows that Tita is fully aware that there is no love between Pedro and Rosaura. The quote states that Tita was being blinded by the color white, because she can t accept that fact that her love is going to marry her sister even though they do not love each other. Rosaura, who is the bride seemed like a white snowy ghost to Tita because Pedro did not love her and she doesn t love Pedro. In the next quote Laura Esquivel integrates both the colors red and white in one paragraph to foreshadow Esperanza s doubtful future, The Earth swallowed ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 38. What Are The Similarities Between Chrysler And The Seagram... The Chrysler and the Seagram Building are alike in that they are both iconic symbols of architecture in America. However, that is where the similarities end. Walter Chrysler wanted the Chrysler Building to be the tallest in the world and also to make a bold statement, to show his wealth and fortune. Even though they were both designed to be office buildings, the Seagram Building was designed with a much more functional look in mind. The Chrysler Building, located in Manhattan, New York, was designed by William Van Alen. It is constructed out of steel and brick and stands at a staggering 1,046 feet tall. For a short time, it was the tallest building in the world. This Art Deco skyscraper is heavily ornamented with objects reminiscent of Chrysler s automobile empire. The semicircles on the outside of the spire were designed to evoke the imagery of Chrysler hubcaps. The Art Deco style of the Chrysler Building is dramatically different from the functional aesthetic look of the Seagram Building. The Seagram Building, also located in Manhattan, was designed by Ludwig Mies van der Rohe. It is constructed out of steel overlaid with bronze and glass walls. Additionally, it is significantly shorter than the Chrysler Building, standing at 516 feet tall. Mies designed this International Style building with the intention of letting the construction elements and bare facade of the building showcase it s beauty rather than relying on heavy ornamentation on the ... The 1920 s opened the door to the idea of the ERA and individuals such as Alice Paul and the National Women s Party paved the way to secure constitutional rights for women. The members of the Women s Party focused their time and energy on the ERA to help in guaranteeing women constitutional protection from discrimination. Paul spent all her life advocating for these rights and well as other issues affecting women during the 20s. Paul considered herself a conservative but her vision for women had always gone beyond her own conservatism. Shortly before her death, she was quoted as saying, I think if ... The movie s plot revolves around Maria, a young woman who has to leave the convent to become a governess at the Von Trapp family due to a request from the head nun. During the time at the Von Trapp s house, Maria finds her affection grows bigger every day with the seven children and the naval officer widower, Captain Georg Von Trapp. In 2013, NBC decided to produce The Sound of Music Live! as a live television stage production which based on the original Broadway show in 1959. In both versions, The Sound of Music (1965) and The Sound of Music Live (2013) have similarities as well as differences in their casts, formats, and public s opinion. • 42. Development Of A Mentoring Program Hybrid Assignment 3 In today s volatile business world, it is vital for organizations to engage employees both intellectually and emotionally. Through mentoring, employees identify themselves as a vital part of the organization while creating a heightened level of ownership. Mentoring programs are of great value to any company. In most cases, these programs are considered essential. By developing and implementing a mentoring program, the learning process for employees is accelerated. It is said that mentoring can accomplish things that training cannot (Johnson). Even though, developing a mentoring program is not an easy task, the benefits outweigh the challenges. A mentoring program will help alleviate high employee turnover and assist in building a pipeline of diverse employees. The development of a mentoring program begins by deciding on whether it should be a formal or informal program. On one hand, a formal mentoring program includes 1. Connection to a strategic business objective of the organization 2. Established goals 3. Measurable outcomes 4. Expert training and support 4. Direct organizational benefits and 5. Mentoring engagements lasting 9 12 months ( Business mentoring matters , 2012). On the other hand, an informal mentoring program includes: 1. Unspecified goals 2. Unknown outcomes 3. Self selection of mentors and mentees 4. No expert training or support 5. Long term mentorship and 6. Indirect organizational benefits ( Business mentoring matters , 2012). ... • 43. The Ramifications Of Population Growth THE RAMIFICATIONS OF POPULATION GROWTH Global human population is mounting at an alarming rate. In fact, in the next fifteen years, it is expected to reach 8.5 billion. Even if a worldwide policy of two children per couple, instead of the current 2.8, were enacted tomorrow, the global population would continue to grow for about seventy years before stabilizing at about thirteen billion people (Pimentel, 155). The ramifications of such growth could be catastrophic. Overpopulation contributes to a multitude of problems such as the degradation of environmental quality, the depletion of natural resources, the spread of disease, and an escalation in crime and conflict. The sheer number of people leeching off of the earth undermines environmental quality. But beyond that is the fact that individuals are consuming more. According to Thomas Friedman s book Hot, Flat, and Crowded, there is not only an increasing global population, but also a growing number of people demanding a middle class lifestyle. So not only do you have more people demanding resources, but you also have people demanding more resources. Friedman blames this phenomenon for the rise in global temperatures (Friedman, 8). Human life puts a massive strain on natural resources. Consider food production, alone. The agriculture needed to support the current 7.1 billion people on earth requires about 500,000 gallons of freshwater per acre and enormous amounts of fossil fuel for inputs such as fertilizer and machinery ... • 44. The Brief Wondrous Life Of Oscar Wao Analysis Anti feminist views through the novel of The Brief Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao In recent discussions, the novels The Brief Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao by Junot Diaz, has given rise to a controversial question: whether women should be labeled as incomplete and an uncertainty without men. At the same time, some have argued and questioned the intention of the two authors i.e., whether they hold any respect for women, at all. In fact, there has been a collective attempt to convey that men can control women, and by controlling them (women), men are able to regulate love itself, and keep them protected , as can be seen through these authors methodical choice of words such as bitch , raging , useless woman , fea , idiota , vividness and worthless . Moreover, though initially it may appear that both aforementioned authors have taken a defensive stance when they label women as imperfect human beings, setting the boundaries, and painting women as a disparaging object, in reality, however, the said authors are heavily afflicted by thoughts of death, rendering them to be in a constant internal conflict amongst themselves, in search of love, leaving us to further question whether their hostility towards women is from an obdurate standpoint, wounded by personal experience, or are they just merely trying to hypnotize their readers by confining the latter to only see 20th century s society through his eyes. In this regard, my personal view is that not only do this novel shed light on the past and immortality, but it is also undeniable that the idea of time and death constantly haunt the author, adversely influencing his personal fears, rendering the latter to be subjective. Nonetheless, though it is conceded that Diaz is power hungry for a superior status, i.e., dominance and power over his lovers, I believe that the author finds comfort when he is able to vent out his actual feelings through the novel, using ambiguous words, to channel his grievance as an act of voice against his individual circumstance, the latter as it was experienced in his conservative era. In fact, the author has been open to criticism and subject of much debate in recent times. As Diaz says, The dyad of Yunior and Oscar drives much of what ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
