DIABETES AND ITS MANAGEMENT
07/05/17
WHAT IS DIABETES?
 Diabetes is a condition where the amount of glucose in
your blood is too high because the body cannot use it
properly.
 This is because your pancreas doesn’t produce any
insulin, or not enough insulin, to help glucose enter your
body’s cells – or the insulin that is produced does not
work properly (known as insulin resistance)
07/05/17
WHAT ARE THE TYPES
1. TYPE-1 DM
2. TYPE-2 DM
3. GESTATIONAL DIABETES MELLITUS
07/05/17
TYPE 1 DIABETES:
Type 1 diabetes develops when the insulin-producing cells
in the body have been destroyed and the body is unable
to produce any insulin.
07/05/17
TYPE 2 DIABETES:
Type 2 diabetes develops when the insulin-
producing cells in the body are unable to
produce enough insulin, or when the insulin that is
produced does not work properly (known as
insulin resistance)
07/05/17
GESTATIONAL DIABETES:
Gestational diabetes is a type of diabetes that
affects pregnant women, usually during the
second or third trimester. Women with
gestational diabetes don’t have diabetes
before their pregnancy, and after giving birth it
usually goes away.
07/05/17
DIABETES RISK FACTORS
IN TYPE 1
 Family history
 Diseases of the
pancreas
 Infection or illness
07/05/17
IN TYPE 2
Age
Obesity or being overweight
Impaired glucose tolerance
Insulin resistance
Ethnic background & Sedentary lifestyle
High blood pressure
high cholesterol
Gestational diabetes
SIGNS AND SYMPTOMS OF DIABETES
 Frequent urination
 Excessive thirst
 Increased hunger
 Weight loss
 Tiredness
 Lack of interest
and concentration
07/05/17
 A tingling sensation or numbness in
the hands or feet
 Blurred vision
 Frequent infections
 Slow-healing wounds
 Vomiting and stomach pain
 DKA in TYPE 1
COMPLICATIONS OF DIABETES
07/05/17
NORMAL VALUES
07/05/17
Management
 Nutritional
 Exercise
 Monitoring
 Pharmacologic/Drug Management
07/05/17
Dietary Management
 Carbohydrate 45-65% total daily calories
 Protein-15-20% total daily calories
 Fats—less than 30% total calories, saturated fats only
10% of total calories
 Fiber—lowers cholesterol; soluble—legumes, oats, fruits
 Consistent, well-balanced small meals several times per
day
 Exchange system or counting carbohydrates
07/05/17
Exercise and Diabetes
 Exercise increases uptake of glucose by muscles and
improves utilization, alters lipid levels, increases HDL and
decreases TG and TC
 If on insulin, eat 15g snack before beginning
 Check Blood Sugar before, during and after exercising if the
exercise is prolonged
07/05/17
Glucose monitoring
 Patients on insulin should check sugars 2-4 times per day
 Not on insulin, two or three times per week
 Should check before meals and 2 hours after meals
07/05/17
Pharmacologic/Drug Management
 Insulin therapy
 Oral antidiabetic agents
07/05/17
Hypoglycemia
Hypoglycemia, also known as low blood sugar, is when blood sugar
decreases to below normal levels
07/05/17
Symptoms
•Shakiness Nervousness or anxiety Sweating
• chills and clamminess
•Irritability or Confusion
• including delirium
•Rapid/fast heartbeat
• Lightheadedness or dizziness
•Hunger and nausea
•Blurred/impaired vision
•Tingling or numbness in the lips or tongue
•Headaches
• Weakness or fatigue Anger,
• sadness Lack of coordination
•Seizures Unconsciousness
•Sleepiness
Mnagement of Hypoglycemia
 Consume 15-20 grams of glucose or simple carbohydrates
 Recheck your blood glucose after 15 minutes
 If hypoglycemia continues, repeat.
 Once blood glucose returns to normal, eat a small snack if your next
planned meal or snack is more than an hour or two awy.
 If patient is in hospital with IV access, 25% dextrose can be given
 injection Glucagon can be admister(Glucagon is a hormone that
stimulates your liver to release stored glucose into your bloodstream)
