Project Loon is a project by Google to provide internet access using high-altitude balloons. In June 2013, Google launched a pilot test of 30 balloons from New Zealand to refine the technology. The balloons float in the stratosphere, twice as high as airplanes, and are carried by winds while special antennas on buildings connect people to the balloon network. The signal bounces between balloons and back to the global internet on earth. Project Loon aims to provide affordable, easy internet access to rural and remote areas using renewable energy sources like solar panels to power the balloons.
