This document summarizes three main mechanisms of horizontal gene transfer in bacteria: transformation, conjugation, and transduction. Transformation involves the uptake of naked DNA by competent bacteria through homologous recombination. Conjugation is the transfer of genetic material between bacteria through direct cell contact via pilus. Transduction occurs when genes are transferred from a host bacterium to a bacteriophage virus and then delivered into another host during viral infection. These three processes allow bacteria to exchange genetic material laterally aside from vertical descent.
