2. Primary research is research that I created myself
This was by carrying out interviews and getting people to respond to
surveys
Positives:
You could tailor my research to get the information I needed
I had the opportunity to ask additional questions during interviews
Negatives:
It can take a long time to set-up, gather and collate information
Finding reliable respondents can be difficult
3. Primary Research
I used primary research to:
Ask specific questions that only a fan can answer
Get a more intimate insight into the tastes of an audience
I could also use it after I have constructed my music video to:
Use the interview to confirm my findings from my secondary research
To gather feedback on a finished product
4. Secondary research involved looking at existing material
It allowed me to look at resources that have already been created
Positives:
The research is already out there. All you have to do is sift through it.
There are a wide range of resources available
Negatives:
The research may not be entirely suited to your needs
You are reliant on the accuracy and integrity of other researchers work
5. Secondary Research
I used secondary research to:
Analyse existing videos
Understand the history of a music scene/genre
Identify the mise en scene of the genre
Research album covers and packaging and adverts
Understand the key ideologies of a music genre
Identify key bands or artists within that genre
Understand the motivations of a genres audience
6. Knowing my audience is key to making a successful
media product for them, taking this into account I am
going to construct a typical audience profile.
the archetypal fan of my chosen genre
Georgia is a18 year old female with a massive love R’N’B,
she spends a great deal of time listening to her music on her
iPod and also on the radio. She regularly attends live musical
performances and purchases the physical CD format of her
favourable artists to copy onto her iTunes, for her, the CD
cover is particularly important when purchasing a CD, as it
implies a lot about the particular artist. Georgia is very
sociable and well-liked at college, she is in full-time education
as a student yet manages to find time for her love of music.
She communicates heavily through the shared love of R’N’B
within her social groups and expresses this externally from
college, by ways such as live musical performances, and
purchasing the CD’s, as previously mentioned, yet also
through the purchasing of magazines that carry the same
theme and style of the R’N’B genre.
7. The purpose of my Audience
Profile
The more I find out about my chosen genre and its audience the
more able I will be to create an appropriate video for them.
The better I understand the way they dress the better I can dress
my actors
The better I understand the locations that you typically find these
groups in the better I can use locations for filming
The better I understand what my audience wants and expects to
see; the better performance and narrative you can construct for
them
