Guttenberg Design Principle
• Primal optical/Strong fallow areas contain the banner and
masthead – Makes the name evident and sells the
magazine brand
• Reading gravity – The key image and key cover line are
through the centre, first thing that you see (it is a key
article of interest so should hook more readers than other
articles in the magazine)
• Barcode/website/price in the terminal area – this is where
the reader would look to find them
• Coverlines are abundant along the axis of orientation and
the base of the page
• Key cover line is unmissable in the weak fallow area so no
space is wasted on not addressing the audience

Cross Media Convergence
• Contains links to online copies of the magazine like a Twitter address and a
website
• These serve to extend the magazine beyond its paperback prison. If the
reader is interested, it gives them more to do, maintains audience
interest, brings in more money and can easily be corrected.
• Means that the magazine can interact directly with the readers which is
especially appreciated these days by younger readers

• Most of my market research said
they would prefer a cheap price
of around £1-2, but I have taken
into account my magazine’s
monthly release and the fact
that it contains free things and
decided that the price can be
slightly higher (£2.99) whilst still
attracting consumers as it makes
up for it in these areas.

Attract audience

  • 1. How did you attract/address the audience?
  • 2. Content • Uses bands and groups that appeal to the teenage/adult audience and indietronic/rock fans. • ‘Exclusive’ or ‘Free’ content
  • 3. Photography • Star marketing – my artist, Thomas McMaster, is of a similar age to the target demographic so appeals to them • Costume/Gesture matches the genre so appeals to fans of that music
  • 4. House Style • The bright and contrasting colour scheme is sophisticated and grabs attention • Clear and simple font use – both sophisticated and fun, appeals to all ages in the intended readership
  • 5. Guttenberg Design Principle • Primal optical/Strong fallow areas contain the banner and masthead – Makes the name evident and sells the magazine brand • Reading gravity – The key image and key cover line are through the centre, first thing that you see (it is a key article of interest so should hook more readers than other articles in the magazine) • Barcode/website/price in the terminal area – this is where the reader would look to find them • Coverlines are abundant along the axis of orientation and the base of the page • Key cover line is unmissable in the weak fallow area so no space is wasted on not addressing the audience
  • 6. My Market Research • My market research report suggests that my readers would be encouraged to buy a magazine if it included free things, exclusive content, and good photography, which I believe my magazine fully achieves
  • 7. Cross Media Convergence • Contains links to online copies of the magazine like a Twitter address and a website • These serve to extend the magazine beyond its paperback prison. If the reader is interested, it gives them more to do, maintains audience interest, brings in more money and can easily be corrected. • Means that the magazine can interact directly with the readers which is especially appreciated these days by younger readers
  • 8. Keeping up with the Music Industry • I have included a lot of the ways in which my audience said that they like to keep up with the music industry • Ie. I mention that the magazine comes equipped with its own social networks and website
  • 9. Price • Most of my market research said they would prefer a cheap price of around £1-2, but I have taken into account my magazine’s monthly release and the fact that it contains free things and decided that the price can be slightly higher (£2.99) whilst still attracting consumers as it makes up for it in these areas.
