This is a presentation by Dada Robert in a Your Skill Boost masterclass organised by the Excellence Foundation for South Sudan (EFSS) on Saturday, the 25th and Sunday, the 26th of May 2024.
He discussed the concept of quality improvement, emphasizing its applicability to various aspects of life, including personal, project, and program improvements. He defined quality as doing the right thing at the right time in the right way to achieve the best possible results and discussed the concept of the "gap" between what we know and what we do, and how this gap represents the areas we need to improve. He explained the scientific approach to quality improvement, which involves systematic performance analysis, testing and learning, and implementing change ideas. He also highlighted the importance of client focus and a team approach to quality improvement.
The French Revolution, which began in 1789, was a period of radical social and political upheaval in France. It marked the decline of absolute monarchies, the rise of secular and democratic republics, and the eventual rise of Napoleon Bonaparte. This revolutionary period is crucial in understanding the transition from feudalism to modernity in Europe.

Operation “Blue Star” is the only event in the history of Independent India where the state went into war with its own people. Even after about 40 years it is not clear if it was culmination of states anger over people of the region, a political game of power or start of dictatorial chapter in the democratic setup.
The people of Punjab felt alienated from main stream due to denial of their just demands during a long democratic struggle since independence. As it happen all over the word, it led to militant struggle with great loss of lives of military, police and civilian personnel. Killing of Indira Gandhi and massacre of innocent Sikhs in Delhi and other India cities was also associated with this movement.

The Roman Empire A Historical Colossus.pdfkaushalkr1407
The Roman Empire, a vast and enduring power, stands as one of history's most remarkable civilizations, leaving an indelible imprint on the world. It emerged from the Roman Republic, transitioning into an imperial powerhouse under the leadership of Augustus Caesar in 27 BCE. This transformation marked the beginning of an era defined by unprecedented territorial expansion, architectural marvels, and profound cultural influence.
The empire's roots lie in the city of Rome, founded, according to legend, by Romulus in 753 BCE. Over centuries, Rome evolved from a small settlement to a formidable republic, characterized by a complex political system with elected officials and checks on power. However, internal strife, class conflicts, and military ambitions paved the way for the end of the Republic. Julius Caesar’s dictatorship and subsequent assassination in 44 BCE created a power vacuum, leading to a civil war. Octavian, later Augustus, emerged victorious, heralding the Roman Empire’s birth.
Under Augustus, the empire experienced the Pax Romana, a 200-year period of relative peace and stability. Augustus reformed the military, established efficient administrative systems, and initiated grand construction projects. The empire's borders expanded, encompassing territories from Britain to Egypt and from Spain to the Euphrates. Roman legions, renowned for their discipline and engineering prowess, secured and maintained these vast territories, building roads, fortifications, and cities that facilitated control and integration.
The Roman Empire’s society was hierarchical, with a rigid class system. At the top were the patricians, wealthy elites who held significant political power. Below them were the plebeians, free citizens with limited political influence, and the vast numbers of slaves who formed the backbone of the economy. The family unit was central, governed by the paterfamilias, the male head who held absolute authority.
Culturally, the Romans were eclectic, absorbing and adapting elements from the civilizations they encountered, particularly the Greeks. Roman art, literature, and philosophy reflected this synthesis, creating a rich cultural tapestry. Latin, the Roman language, became the lingua franca of the Western world, influencing numerous modern languages.
Roman architecture and engineering achievements were monumental. They perfected the arch, vault, and dome, constructing enduring structures like the Colosseum, Pantheon, and aqueducts. These engineering marvels not only showcased Roman ingenuity but also served practical purposes, from public entertainment to water supply.

2024.06.01 Introducing a competency framework for languag learning materials ...Sandy Millin
http://sandymillin.wordpress.com/iateflwebinar2024
Published classroom materials form the basis of syllabuses, drive teacher professional development, and have a potentially huge influence on learners, teachers and education systems. All teachers also create their own materials, whether a few sentences on a blackboard, a highly-structured fully-realised online course, or anything in between. Despite this, the knowledge and skills needed to create effective language learning materials are rarely part of teacher training, and are mostly learnt by trial and error.
Knowledge and skills frameworks, generally called competency frameworks, for ELT teachers, trainers and managers have existed for a few years now. However, until I created one for my MA dissertation, there wasn’t one drawing together what we need to know and do to be able to effectively produce language learning materials.
This webinar will introduce you to my framework, highlighting the key competencies I identified from my research. It will also show how anybody involved in language teaching (any language, not just English!), teacher training, managing schools or developing language learning materials can benefit from using the framework.
1. Unit 13 – Planning and Pitching a Print based Media Product - Proposal
Format:
My magazine will be created will be based on a rock and hip-hop theme, with the use of
creating a front cover and a double page spread, the magazine will be eye catching and
interesting to the public. With the format of an A4 size with the dimensions of roughly
8x11 inches or 21x29 cm format, this would be a decent size to the public, because of the
amount of anchoring information that would be presented on the front cover, for example;
anchorage text, and in my double page spread, for example; interviews.
Working Title:
My working title is ‘TeensRule’ as my magazine is aimed towards consumers of the young
age and that the music genre would likely be a popular interest. My title would be bold
which would contrast well with the public as such of the involvement of bright and vibrant
colour, which would make my magazine stand out. In addition of my chosen font style, the
simplicity of the title will be enhanced by the informations presented and
complement/amplify the main image.
Genre:
The subgenre of rock and hip-hop as this resembles the music genre quite well and also
relates to the music industry, my magazine would compete with many of the popular
music magazine today, such as; Q, NME, Mojo, RollingStones and Billboard.
Content:
My magazine, along with its content would contain a decent amount of information as
such of the following; Interviews/Reviews, Pictures, Competition and Music Awards. This
would provide the public with a magazine that would contain a lot of interesting content,
this would result in an increase in popularity as such of the content presented.
The publications would also feature brands that would be relatively small.
Style or Approach:
The connotations of the bold title of ‘TeensRules’ in the font style of ‘Gunplay’, suggests
that this would attract the interest of the young population. With the use of the bold black
magazine style, this would enhance or be enhanced by the colours of the magazine, I
would relate my magazine colours to resemble popular band albums and well known
artists. Along with the additional main images which would be frequent throughout the
magazine, this would denote the resemblance between the cover stories and the main
image(s).
My approach on how my magazine would be produced would be produced by a simple
software that would be cheap. This software would produce a decent amount of pages of
roughly between 30 to 40 pages, therefore this would result in an monthly issue release. I
would also use the software of Photoshop CC (2015 version) to edit my magazine front
cover and double page spread. This would be a very useful software to include during the
production of my magazine this will allow me to control what should be in my magazine
and what should not be in my magazine.
The main tools I would using when producing my magazine are of the following;
2. Unit 13 – Planning and Pitching a Print based Media Product - Proposal
1. Quick Selection Tool - To crop out a specific area of an image, for example, the
main image of the model and place it onto a new/different background. I would
use this tool in photoshop because, this would allow me to select only the key
features which i want to include in my magazine, for example, social media links
and
2. Magic Wand Tool - Cut out white or coloured areas on images, for example; cut
out white areas on social media logos
3. Ruler Tool - To keep work/text well organised and tidy. This tool would also be
useful for me to create a border for my magazine.
The denotations of the colour scheme that I would be using on my magazine would
consist of complementary colours that would enhance the bold magazine logo and the
contents on the front cover. In addition, the bold and vibrant colours will enhance the
quality of the magazine, along with the helpfulness of the main image which will
complement the masthead and cover lines.
The colour of a dark shade of red which I have chosen for my magazine masthead is
quite complementary towards the light green strapline, as this denotes that this would
anchor the public, due to the variation of the contrasting light and dark colours that
enhance the main image. The colour of a dark shade of blue, would be used for my
headline, however this will not be the main focus of the magazine front cover, this would
engage the audience to review the magazine, with the examination of the front cover;
drawing in the public to read the latest news referring to the music industry. The colour
blue denote and complementary sense of attraction towards the magazine and therefore
anchoring the public, to review the headline and observe the magazine, as this would be
enhanced by the main image and the white background ofthe magazine cover. Thirdly,
with the colour yellow which would be used for my main story coverlines, this would
anchor in the public to read the magazine, as such the front cover contains a briefing of
the latest news and updates inside the magazine. this colour denotes the vibrancy of the
cover lines to therefore induce the public to read the magazine. Finally, with the colour of
green which I have chosen for my pull quote, would be amplified by the masthead, this is
due to the positioning of the pull quote that would anchoring in the public to view the
magazine. This colour denotes and sense of simplicity and attraction, as the front cover
will consist of complementary colours that would enhance the vibrancy of the magazine,
which would result in an anchorage of the public.
Audience:
● Age - Hartley
● Gender - Hartley
● Socio-Economic Needs - Maslow
● Ethnicity - Hartley
● Stereotypes - Katz
My magazine will relate to the theory of Hartley, by provide my magazine along with its
content a specific age range of 15 to 22,as this the content will be aimed more towards
the younger generation, as such more of the content will relate to them. Following on from
Hartleys theory, my magazine will be aimed to both the male and female gender as my
magazines content will include information that will interest both genders. with the use of
age and gender, Hartley’s theory was to interest young consumers with content that will
not offend the public's ethnicity and nationality; also one of Harley’s theory. Furthermore,
my creating content that would relate to Maslow’s theory of Social and Economic needs,
such as providing viewers with the use of information and interests that would relate to
them more. For example, men and women seasonal fashion, for popular makeup brands,
or sports. Finally, with Katz theory of Stereotypes, Katz’s theory suggests a purpose of
3. Unit 13 – Planning and Pitching a Print based Media Product - Proposal
‘Personal Identification’ and ‘Personal Relationship’ this means that the target audience
will be immersed by the factual information given.
Length:
My magazine will have a page length of between 30 to 40 pages, as including the front
and back cover. I have chosen this page length because, my magazine will be a monthly
issue because this will be cost effective; would not cost a lot of money to produce a
monthly magazine rather than a weekly. In addition, with a magazine size of A4 this would
allow me to convey a decent amount of content that would not overwhelm the consumer,
as such of the variety of; main images and pull quotes, with the additional content of;
competition, music awards and reviews/interviews.
Frequency:
Monthly? Weekly? Fortnightly?
I prefer my magazine to have a frequency of monthly, because, relating to my ‘length’, I
want my magazine issue release to be quite frequent as this will allow more consumers to
buy the magazine. Alongside the page length of 30 to 40 pages this would suit a monthly
release very well because, it would not cost a lot of money to produce a magazine as
frequent as every month.
Why?
I decided on a monthly issue that would interest the public, this would update/ remind the
public of information that relates to the music industry. similar to the interest of a
newspaper or informational leaflet, by creating monthly magazine of rough 30 pages, this
would interest the consumer as such of the variety of factual and eye-catching
information.
Cost?
I want my magazine to be cost-effective with a ranging of cost of between £2-£3 as I want
my magazine to contain a decent price that would interest the reader/ consumer to buy
the magazine. By selling my magazine at this price on a month basis, the outcome make
increase the profit and popularity of the magazine.
What I could develop further:
1. Making a social media page
By creating a social media page, for example; Instagram and Twitter, this could increase the
advantage of my magazine being notice by the public. due to this the creation of a social
media account(s) would increase the likelihood of the magazine company being noticed. By
creating a Facebook, Twitter and Instagram account this would allow the company to post
updates on the magazine as well as include collaborations and images that would making
the magazine brand more noticeable and popular.
2. Making a Website
Similar to my social media account(s) the idea that social media links to a unique website
that resembles the certain components (such as colour scheme) and interests of ‘RockStars’
and ‘TeensRule’ individually. By creating a website with influence on the layout from other
magazine websites such as Q and KERRANG, the idea that having a website could involve
other ideas such as; a subscription sale.
4. Unit 13 – Planning and Pitching a Print based Media Product - Proposal
3. Creating an App
Sourcing the website and social media links, would be an advantage as to easy access in
any location (for instance allowing an offline and downloadable feature) could increase the
popularity of both magazine brands.
4. Presenting a poster to advertise my magazine
As many other magazine companies, the idea that creating a poster could allow the public to
notice the magazine brand identity. Although a poster is not as ‘Out there’ as a billboard,
however, this would help with the cost efficiency of printing a certain number of posters,
along with the price of printing the quotes and the cost of it all.
5. Position in market place
As money would often be tight within the first few years of any new business, the position of
the market would be low on the standards, however with the musical genre marketplace, the
likelihood of an increase in the noticeability of the magazine an the profit gained profit, the
identity of the marketplace position can change over time.
