Artificial Blood
Blood Substitutes
Blood Surrogate
Blood
• Blood is the life.
• Blood is circulated in the
body through blood vessels.
• Arterial blood carries Oxygen.
• Venous blood carries Carbon dioxide
Composition Of Blood
Blood Has Many Functions
• Transportation.
• Regulation of body
temperature and pH.
• Protection against blood
loss through clottings
What Is Artificial Blood ?
• Artificial blood or blood surrogate is a
substance used to mimic and fulfil some
functions of biological blood, usually in the
oxygen carrying sense.
• Main aim to provide an alternative to blood
transfusion.
• It does not contain plasma, RBCs, WBCs.
• Used to mirror function of biological blood.
• It is designed for the sole
purpose of transporting
oxygen and carbon dioxide
throughout the body.
Why Artificial Blood ?
• Increasing demand.
• Decreasing supply.
• Safety:- Infectious diseases
transmission.
• Cost.
History
• In 1616, when William
Harvey first described
the circulation of blood.
• In 1665, the first recorded
successful blood
transfusion on dog by
Richard Lower.
• Many materials used for transfusion that
include beer, urin, milk, plan resins & sheep
blood.
• In 1909, Karl Landsteiner
classified human blood
into 4 types A, B, O, AB.
• In 1966, perflurocarbons this type of blood
substitute suggested.
• In 1968, the rats blood replaced with a PFCs
emulsion & lived for a few hours & recovered
fully after blood replaced.
• After that it is approved that transfusion of
artificial blood can be possible.
Types Of Blood Substitutes
(1) Perflurocarbons (PFCs):-
× Used chemical compounds which carry &
release oxygen.
(2) Haemoglobin Based Oxygen Carrier:-
× Derived from humans, animals, artificial
via recombinant technology.
How It Works ?
• Artificial Blood From Stem Cells:-
Donated Blood vs Artificial Blood
• Artificial Blood
• Long shelf time.
• No risk of transmitting
infectious diseases.
• Universally compatible.
• Donated Blood
• Short shelf life.
• Risk of transmitting
infectious diseases.
• Need for cross
matching.
Advantages Of Artificial Blood
• Does not need to be refrigerated.
• No need for blood matching.
• No risk of infection.
• Can be kept at RT.
Disadvantages Of Artificial Blood
• Expensive / costly.
• Does not mix well with blood.
• Can cause unpleasant side effects.
• Does not carry as much oxygen.
