ASSURE Method-Thursday
A-Analyze Learners: This is a 3rd grade class with 18 students. There are 8 girls in the class
and 10 boys. Out of the 18 students there are 3 African American students, 2 Chinese students,
and 1 Jewish student.
S-State Objective: My students will be able to describe specific landmarks, people, historic
facts, heritage, and culture about Africa by the end of the day at an accuracy of 90% by creating
a poster on PowerPoint and creating an image with the use of Photoshop.
S-Select Methods, Media, and Materials: The students will first read the chapter from their
textbook about Africa in a group of four. The students will return to their seats when finished. I
will then pull up the poster I created on PowerPoint to give the students an example, and to show
the students how to use PowerPoint to make a poster properly. I will give the students step by
step instruction that they will have to copy down on a piece of notebook paper in order to
remember everything. I will then explain to them that the poster must be of Africa and it is their
choice how they want to illustrate it. I will tell the students to be creative because we will print
the posters and present them to the class. I will then show the students the photo on Photoshop I
created. This will give students an example of what they will need to do. I will also tell the
students to write down specific instructions on their piece of notebook paper, so they will know
how to create an image on Photoshop. Once all instruction has been given, the class will go to
the computer lab to create their poster and digital image.
U-Utilize Media and Materials: The morning before the lesson I will make sure I have the
poster from PowerPoint and the picture from Photoshop saved on the computer in class, so I can
2. show the class the images on the overhead projector. I will also make sure every student has
some background knowledge of these programs before starting. I will give specific instruction on
how to use both and what to do. I will also monitor the room while the students are working to
see if there are any problems.
R-Require Learner Participation: The students will be required to read their textbook with a
group of four students. Each student must participate because they will receive credit for this
activity. The students will have to take notes down on how to use both PowerPoint to create a
poster and Photoshop to create a digital image to represent Africa. Once we enter the computer
lab, the students must work alone to create their projects. Once the projects are complete and the
posters are printed, each student must give their presentation about their poster. A hard copy of
the digital image must be turned into me as well as their copy of their notes they took in class
about how to use each program.
E-Evaluation and Revision: At the end of the day, the students will have to write a quick write
about something they found interesting or learned about Africa. This will allow me to see how
well they listened in class to the presentations and how well they comprehended what they read
about Africa in their history books. The group reading they did from their book will be graded as
participation points. The poster and presentation will be worth 20 points in all. The digital image
will be worth 15 points. Their notes they took down will be worth 5 points. I just want the
students to gain note taking skills at an early age. If for any reason the computer lab would be
unavailable I would still present the poster and digital Photoshop image to the class in the
classroom and then have each group alternate to the computers to complete their poster and
digital image. I have five computers in the classroom. The students who are not on the computer
will read the chapter first. If the internet would be down I would still show the students my
3. images because I have them saved on a flash drive and have the students draw out their own
poster and be extremely creative. For their digital imaging I actually brought in some old
magazines, just in case the internet wasn’t working, that have African artifacts and animals
inside. They could cut pictures out and create either a colleague or a picture with pieces from the
magazines.
