Assure Assignment
This unit is for a fourth grade class to teach holidays. In this class there is a total of 20
students with 11 girls and 9 boys. Of those students there are 2 Muslims, 3 Jewish, and 2 African
American. The students will understand holidays that are common as well as different depending
on culture/religion. For one week, December holidays are what will be focused on with a
different holiday each day. They will have a 100% better understanding of the holidays by the
end of the week.
To ensure the students’ knowledge of the holidays we will sing songs & read stories
geared towards the different holidays. Also, I will have small groups discuss and present separate
holidays to be presented on Friday to the class. Another activity will be to discover how to say
“Happy Holidays” in different ways/languages. The class will also do different arts and crafts
that represent different holiday figures.
To give students more time to learn about each of the holidays, the lesson will be spread
out through the week and each holiday will be taught on separate days. Monday being
Hanukkah, Tuesday is Christmas, Wednesday will be Kwanza, Thursday is Dhu al-Hijjah, and
Friday will be a review and celebration of everything.
Before we start I will break the students into four groups of five. Each group will be
given a holiday to research and prepare a presentation to be given on Friday. The presentation
will include a poster board, a song that is popular for their particular holiday, a food that is
common in the festivities, the origin of the holiday, the pronunciation of how to wish someone
for example, Merry Christmas or Happy Hanukkah in the languages most common, and anything
extra that was found interesting or different. On the individual days we will do arts and crafts
that correspond with the holiday. On Friday we will have a final celebration where we will listen
to music, eat foods that are popular in different cultures, play different games from different
celebrations, and give our presentations.
