Assignment 7 – Magazine
Advert Analysis
BY JAY FELL
Common Conventions of Magazine Adverts
 Large picture of artist in order to promote their image and draw audience in.
 Uses vibrant colours in order to stand out from the rest of the magazine.
 Release date (sometimes not)
 Social media links
 Big title of the album name so people remember it easier.
 Sometimes feature names of big hits to draw audience in to purchase the whole
album.
 Reviews and ratings of the album to draw people in as they will see that it’s good.
Madeon – ‘The City’
 This is a good example of a conventional magazine
advert. It does not feature a picture of the artist but
does include:
 Release date in bold writing
 Artist name
 Featured tracks
 Social media
 Reviews
 The use of the bright colours not only stand out but
also are useful for his genre which is EDM. There is
also a silhouette of the city which represents the
title of the album.
Kanye West – ‘Yeezus’
 This magazine advert is to the point and simple. It only
features the album cover, album name, artist and release
date.
 This could be because Kanye West already has a massive
fan-base and therefore does not need to be flashy in
order to get sales for his album.
 Only the important things (the release date and title) are
bigger than the rest of the text as they are the most
important pieces of information to the reader as it
simply informs them that the album is coming out.
Drake – ‘Take Care’
 This magazine advert features the artist’s name in large text at
the top. This is because Drake is a big name and therefore his
name alone will draw in a lot of attention. The album cover is
also featured.
 There is no actual release date and it only says ‘out Monday’.
This shows how the advertisement was short term and that it
was only produced within a week of the album’s release. Drake
has such a big image that this short amount of time is still
enough time to build a lot of hype and anticipation around it.
 The use of including the features in the album also will attract
people to buy the album as they all have their own individual
fan-bases.
Wretch 32 – ‘Wretchrospective’
 This magazine advert features a picture of the
artist because it is his debut album and therefore
would be looking to promote his image.
 It also features a suburban feel with the use of
some graffiti in the background which supports his
genre of rap.
 There are also affiliations such as HMV and
7digital which are all places you can buy the
album. This helps promote these brands.
Kings of Leon – ‘Only By The Night’
 This album features all of the band members in the image.
They are combined with an owl which is a nocturnal
animal which links to the title ‘Only by the Night’.
 Instead of a release date they have said ‘Out Now’ which
may create spontaneous response and result in a spike in
sales.
 They also feature the name of some of their hit songs in
order to attract the audience as they will be interested in
their genre.
 The image is unique and therefore also eye catching
