The document proposes a two-component model for assessment: prereferral and post-referral. The prereferral component involves informal assessment like observation and error analysis by teachers to develop and monitor remedial programs, with the goal of avoiding special education referral. The post-referral component includes formal assessment and documentation of educational needs, usually resulting in decisions about eligibility and placement, as well as IEP development. The process is initiated through preliminary data collection and referrals to request assistance or maintain eligibility. A variety of procedures should be used, including norm-referenced tests, criterion-referenced tests, interviews, records reviews, and portfolios.

A proper credit would be appreciated.

1.2.1-Measurement - Meaning
Measurement has been the practice with teachers since a very long time. They have been testing their students and assigning numbers regarding the progress of their students in studies, and adopt corrective measures accordingly.
According to Bradfield & Moredock (1957), ‘Measurement is the process of assigning symbols to the dimension of phenomenon in order to characterize the status of phenomenon as precisely as possible’. Measurement is the process by which a characteristic of an object, person or activity is perceived and understood on specific standards and is described in standard words, symbols or definite units.
Measurement requires the use of numbers but does not require the value judgments be made about the numbers obtained from the process. We measure achievement with a test by counting the number of test items a student answers correctly, and we use exactly the same rule to assign a number to the achievement of each, student in the class.
Example: Raman got 93 marks in a test of Mathematics. Measurement is all about the numbers and being able to quantify the performance or the abilities. Measurements are more objective as they have numerical standards to compare and record. It answers the question “how much”.
Scope of Measurement in Education
The scope of educational measurement includes measurement of educational achievement, intelligence, interest, ability, aptitude, and other traits of students. Using methods, tests, tools, and activities to determine a student's level and what he or she has learned and developed.
Need and Importance of Measurement in Education–
Measurement also helps in considering external assessment for the students, and it helps in understanding the cognitive areas of the individual.
Measuring and evaluating pupils' progress is helpful in establishing how much they have learnt.
Without measuring and analyzing what he has taught, the instructor would be unable to determine how far his students have progressed.

2024.06.01 Introducing a competency framework for languag learning materials ...Sandy Millin
http://sandymillin.wordpress.com/iateflwebinar2024
Published classroom materials form the basis of syllabuses, drive teacher professional development, and have a potentially huge influence on learners, teachers and education systems. All teachers also create their own materials, whether a few sentences on a blackboard, a highly-structured fully-realised online course, or anything in between. Despite this, the knowledge and skills needed to create effective language learning materials are rarely part of teacher training, and are mostly learnt by trial and error.
Knowledge and skills frameworks, generally called competency frameworks, for ELT teachers, trainers and managers have existed for a few years now. However, until I created one for my MA dissertation, there wasn’t one drawing together what we need to know and do to be able to effectively produce language learning materials.
This webinar will introduce you to my framework, highlighting the key competencies I identified from my research. It will also show how anybody involved in language teaching (any language, not just English!), teacher training, managing schools or developing language learning materials can benefit from using the framework.

Embracing GenAI - A Strategic ImperativePeter Windle
Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies such as Generative AI, Image Generators and Large Language Models have had a dramatic impact on teaching, learning and assessment over the past 18 months. The most immediate threat AI posed was to Academic Integrity with Higher Education Institutes (HEIs) focusing their efforts on combating the use of GenAI in assessment. Guidelines were developed for staff and students, policies put in place too. Innovative educators have forged paths in the use of Generative AI for teaching, learning and assessments leading to pockets of transformation springing up across HEIs, often with little or no top-down guidance, support or direction.
This Gasta posits a strategic approach to integrating AI into HEIs to prepare staff, students and the curriculum for an evolving world and workplace. We will highlight the advantages of working with these technologies beyond the realm of teaching, learning and assessment by considering prompt engineering skills, industry impact, curriculum changes, and the need for staff upskilling. In contrast, not engaging strategically with Generative AI poses risks, including falling behind peers, missed opportunities and failing to ensure our graduates remain employable. The rapid evolution of AI technologies necessitates a proactive and strategic approach if we are to remain relevant.

Assessment process for an exceptional student chapter 2

A Proposed Model

The AssessmentProcess:
A Proposed Model
Why do we assess?
To identify individuals who may need additional evaluation or help. Can be
used to identify children at-risk (infants & toddlers). It Assists in designing
2. interventions & monitoring their progress.Assessmentdata gathered before
a referral – can provide informationto documentthe need fora formalreferral
The DIBELSis widelyused in this area to monitor reading interventions. One
of the more important roles of assessment is to determine appropriate
teaching programs and strategies. In determining this assessment can
provide prereferral information to document the need for a formal referral.
Assessment information should also be used to make a decision
about the most appropriate educational placement for a student with
disability. In assessing data are also important in determining appropriate
objectives for the students. The objectives that are identified for exceptional
students are sequential breakdown of those skills that provide a link between
the student’s current performance level and the projected annual goals. We
also assess for initial identification purposes, therefore is used to identify
individuals who might need additional evaluation who might develop
problems in the future.
What are the components of the proposed model?
The process should be monitored and should be flexible enough to be
modified if necessary. One way to view assessment is to break it down into
two components: prereferral and post-referral.
3. The prereferral component is to develop and implement a teaching and
remedial program. And to monitor the effectiveness of the program by
observing the student’s progress.
Assessment in this component is conducted before making a referral
for special education services and will, it is hoped, result in no referral at all.
This componentis heavily weighted toward informal assessmentprocedure,
such as observation, error analysis of work product, curriculum based
assessment. The prereferral component is usually implemented by the
teacher within the currents educational setting.
The post referral component includes the documentation of an
educational need and usually results in decisions about eligibility and
program placement.Italso might result in the developmentof formalized IEP
that includes the goal, objectives, instructional strategies. It includes both
formal assessment and informal assessment procedure. A multidisciplinary
approach is used during this component. It’s possible to have both
components in a particular student.
Explain each process and support your answer
How Is the Process Initiated?
Preliminary assessmentdata should be collected first
4. The documentation should include about the type of behavior, more
extensive assessmentcan be done.
Referrals may be made to requestassistance
To maintain eligibility for specialeducation services
If a studentis referred, they will more than likely be eligible for
specialed.
These datastress the importance and significance of making a referral.
What Procedures Should Be Used
Scoring Norm-Referenced Tests
Raw scores are obtained by norm-referenced tests
Educational & Psychological Testing (AERA 1999)
Interpreting Norm-Referenced Tests
Consider the task demands of the test itself
StandardsofEducational& PsychologicalTesting(AERA
1999)
Criterion-Referenced Tests & Curriculum-Based Assessment
Criterion-referenced test (CRT)
Curriculum-based assessment (CBA)
Curriculum-based measurement (CBM)
Power Versus Speed Tests – Many tests are a combination
5. Power test
Speed test
What Procedures Should Be Used
IndividualVersus Group Tests
Both individualand group testing have their place in the
assessmentprocess
Other AssessmentProcedures
Checklists & observation
SchoolRecords
DirectInterviews
ParentInterviews
Omnibus interview
Behavior-specific interview
Problem-solving interview
Medical& DevelopmentalHistories
Error Analysis – Useful but … Ask students how they
perform tasks – Have them “walk through” the process
Use of Portfolios
Alternative assessmentprocedures have gained
