Marriage Is A Sacred Action, And The Bondage Between...
Marriage is a sacred action, and the bondage between individuals is powerful. Marriage
is one of the greatest moments in ones lifetime. Throughout different cultures marriage
has a different meaning. In some groups, marriage and your spouse is not your decision
and in others you can have multiple spouses. There are several different forms of marriage
and different cultures practice those marriages in different ways. Marriage brings
about happiness but in some cases it can bring grief and discipline. Marriage is a bond
between individuals and no matter the circumstances, whether it s for power or love,
any form of marriage should be recognized. The definition of endogamy is a marriage
within a particular group or category of individuals (Cultural Anthropology, 204).
Cultures who practice this type of marriage require that the marriage be within his or
her social group, or ethnicity. For instance, certain areas of India, especially the Hindu
community, practice endogamy. Marriages outside of their social group are forbidden
and extreme consequences, from disowning to death, will be given. [Endogamy] is a
common practice among displanted cultures attempting to make roots in new countries
as it encourages group solidarity and ensures greater control over group resources. It
helps minorities to survive over a long time in societies with other practices and beliefs
(New World Encyclopedia). Endogamy marriages helps to bond the cultures to become

Disciplined Minds Of The Future Analysis
Professor Howard Gardner gave an Oral presentation in regards to the Five Minds of

Chimney Sweeper William Blake
William Blake proved himself as one of the most influential artists to spring from the
Romantic Era without a doubt. What made Blake so popular may have been his
ability to portray his time period in works of art that were beautifully crafted. Blake s
poetry was not appreciated during his lifetime because people were living the lives his
works vicariously told, but once his time period ended, a historical book was left
behind. The theme of a struggle is most prominently showcased in Blake s poetry.
Whether it be Blake depicting women and their power struggle throughout the 18th or
19th century, or depicting the lives of the children put into the labor force at a very early
age. These children were put in a tunnel (almost literally when... Show more content on

By the speakers hair remaining white, the unobstructed purity is showcased. The color
white makes a second appearance in the first The Chimney Sweeper here, Then naked
and white, all their bags left behind . This passage literally shows the childrens
innocence because their young bodies were bare. When a newborn enters the world, this
is truly the most innocent time in ones life. Through Blakes allusion to the naked, pure,
and free bodies he is emphasizing their continued innocence. The irony of the color
white in this passage is showcased because more than 65% of the chimney sweeps were
black (Simkin 1), restating that the color white is only inserted in the poem to symbolize
innocence (Smith 1).
The transition from The Chimney Sweeper in Songs of Innocence to the other The
Chimney Sweeper in Songs of Experience is a jurassic change of perspective by the
narrator. In the second poem, no façade is placed on the fact that the children are not
innocent. The first line of this poem references the lack of innocence, A little black thing
among the snow, and like previously stated, it is understood that the color white signifies
innocence so on the contrary, the color black represents corruption. Tom Dacre again
states that he knows his life is a tragic one when he says, They clothed me in the clothes

The Dark Horse By James Napier Robertson
In today s society people tend to hear the word bipolar and automatically assume
crazy, nutcase or weird. In the film Dark Horse directed by James Napier Robertson,
we could see how Genesis Potini broke all stereotypical thoughts of having the mental
illness of bipolar. Throughout all these trials that Genesis went through he always
came out on the other side. This made me wonder why having a bipolar illness is a
terrible illness to have in life. My hypothesis was that people who suffer from bipolar
live terrible lives. To test this my hypothesis I came up with the following questions:
How is bipolar illness treated in New Zealand?, what causes bipolar illness? and how is
bipolar viewed in the Tongan culture.
What is the cause of bipolar illness ?
Most of my resources agreed with my hypothesis by stating that bipolar suffers do
have terrible lives by not knowing the exact cause of bipolar. There are some
presumable causes of bipolar which is thought to be caused by faulty genes that have
been passed down from generation to generation. (Dr. Nick Stafford Dr.John H.
Noseworthy, 2012,2011) My first source, emphasizes that there is no exact cause of
bipolar illness but there is a lot of factors that could be considered
(John.Noseworthy,2012). This also links to my second resource which stated that an
aspect resulting to bipolar was to do with the number of faulty genes in the nucleus
carried on from generation to generation forming early stages of bipolar. Therefore
The Called Shot Essay
It s Saturday, October 1, 1932 at Wrigley Field in Chicago. It s a bright and sunny day.
It s Game 3 of the World Series between the New York Yankees and the Chicago Cubs.
And the grandstands are jam packed with nearly 50,000 fans. The Yankees are back on
top of their game after a three season drought of titles and accolades. In this Series, the
Yanks are managed by Joe McCarthy, the manager who had been fired by the Cubs
after the 1930 season. On this day, the Yankees are up 2 games to none over the Cubs
in the Series. And, it was in this game, that one of Babe s biggest legends is born The
Called Shot. Before the start of the game, the tension between the teams is high. Trash
talking of the day is at its peak between the two teams. Both the Cubs players and their
fans are particularly focused on hurling taunts toward the Babe. Some of... Show more

And the smack is silenced as the crack of Babe s bat is heard and he smashes a big,
booming homerun over the wall near the flagpole in center field. Some say it was the
longest homer ever hit out of Wrigley Field. And in those moments, with emotions and
agitation among teams, players and fans running high, this particular turn at the plate
and the ensuing homer created the legend of Babe s Called Shot. Was it truth, rather
than legend? Was Babe pointing at the spot he planned to land his homer or was he
pointing at Root? Or was he simply gesturing in general? No one really knows for
sure. But the legend was born. And likely was written in stone that same day, when the
sports editor for Scripps Howard newspapers wrote the following headline that appeared

Comparing The Great Ancient Figures Of Ancient China And

Introduction
Good morning/ afternoon fellow Year Ten students, today I am presenting a
presentation on why Ancient History is a great riveting subject to do in your senior
years of education. This will be done through the comparison of two great ancient
figures of ancient China and Rome. You will learn how the history of the great s impact

(Next slide) Rome did not take Spartacus and his slave rebellion seriously, therefore fit
line troops were not sent out to fight the rebellion of gladiators and slaves. The Roman
armies of four forces that were sent out were outmanoeuvred and easily defeated.
Spartacus won another three fights before a new roman military force under the control
Marcus Crassus was sent to deal with the rebellious slave army. Eventually after long
pursuits of battles, Spartacus was killed near the headwaters of the Siler River in
southern Italy, but his body was never found. Crassus then crucified 6,000 rebellious
slaves as a warning to others.
Qin Shi Huang
The next figure I will be introducing is a tyrant ruler from the China Dynasty. His father
was the king of the Qin state, and at the age of thirteen his father passed away. He was
well educated and at the age of 22, he took full control of his title as king. He had the
ambition of wanting to master all the other six Chinese states. This made him the leader
of all of china, and eventually he declared himself emperor. His real name was King
Zeng.

into the phrase First emperor . At the age of 22, Huang recognised his ambition and built

including racial and ethnic makeup, its composition by age and gender, educational

be measured just by using arrest data because not all crime is discovered, it can be
measured in different ways. One of them is interviewing offenders to determine whether
they have committed crimes since entering or exiting a program or sanction. Another one
is analyzing officially recorded criminal justice events like arrests, convictions, and
supervision violations and commitments to jail or prison. Moreover, charting a
The Qualitative Methodology Of Research Essay
The qualitative methodology of this research can be considered appropriate, as the
researchers have explained about the participants subjective experiences throughout the
article in different sections such as data collection and analysis, experience of healthcare
and effects of the illness, experience of spiritual needs and variation over the course of
the illness, spiritual help/support, developing spiritual support guidelines and services,
conclusions and implications for the nurse managers.
The research design seemed appropriate to address the aims of the research as sampling,
data collection and analysis was carried out on the basis of qualitative research method.
Although the researcher fails to clearly state which type of sampling was used in the
research, however from observation it has been assumed that purposive sampling was
used which was considered appropriate for this type of study. Purposive sampling is
the type of sampling where participants are usually recruited to a study because of their
exposure to or their experience of the phenomenon in question, which tends to ensure
richness in the data, gathered (Borbasi and Jackson 2012, p.135). The researcher has
not been able to give reason behind some participants not taking part as out of 26

Value ChainConsiderations
In terms of LogCap III, to achieve sustainable competitive advantage, KBR must
disaggregate the value chain and focus on activities affecting cost, price, or both in
relation to the services offered by competitive rivals (Porte, 1985). Wherever possible,
KBR should focus on differentiation by providing value through a unique mix of

Inbound logistics Property and materials are the lifeline for the continuing operations of
base camps. Tangible assets are considered to be property. Tangible property may include
vehicles, tools, generators, sanitation, sleeping containers, coolers for food and many
other items. Materials include consumables that are used to sustain day to day activities
to complete the mission. Property and material must be accounted for throughout the
materials life cycle. Consequently, from the time a purchase order is generated through
consumption of materials, or disposition for property, each items must be tracked
through the approved system of record.

with the Mayors Cell. In terms of O M, all service requests are initiated through the
Service Desk controlled by operations.
3.Outbound logistics In a war zone, outbound operations are an extremely important
aspect of the mission. The timely delivery of property and materials, from outside
vendors, may be challenging. As a result, when the need arises, base camps and forward
operating bases (FOB s) borrow materials from one another. Consequently, outbound
logistics is fundamentally important to the success of the mission. Outbound logistic
activities are initiated through a

Kant s Categorical Imperative Essay
In contrast to the consequentialist focus of utilitarianism, Kant was more focused on
intent and action itself. This leads into one of Kantian ethics main ideals; you mustn t
treat another human being as a means to an end. Kant s Categorical Imperative (CI) is a
deontological theory, which relied heavily on his belief that humans are all capable of
reason in the same manner, on the same level (A Brief Summary of Kant s Categorical
Imperative, 2012). Kant recognized 2 kinds of moral imperatives , a hypothetical
imperative (what must be done to achieve a desired result) and Categorical
imperatives (how one must act irrespective of one s end goal/desires). For Kant, all
moral duties were considered to be categorical, and should apply to everyone
universally. Kant believes that truthfulness is the formal duty of everyone, regardless
of what disadvantage it may cause to yourself or another (Kant, 1994). He illustrates
this quite well by using his categorical imperative, saying that if all people were to lie,
then all contracts and laws would lose their legitimacy. Kant also went on to point out
that if we were to lie, even from a place of good intention, it is impossible to control the
outcome(s) and we may be responsible for whatever comes from it (Kant, 1994).
However if we were to tell the truth then we have upheld our duty and as such can
shoulder no blame for any consequences.
Kant came up with the Categorical Imperative (CI), a theory of universal moral law
which he
A Research On Biometrics And Wireless Technique
Abstract The main purpose of the paper is assembling and developing an iris recognition
system in order to verify uniqueness of the human eye of faculty in a college for
attendance management system. This system based on biometrics and wireless
technique solves the problem of spurious attendance and the trouble of laying the
corresponding network. Here biometric recognition is performed with respect to iris
because of its unique biological properties. The iris is unaffected by external
environmental factors and remains stable over time. It can make the college staff
attendance management more easy and effective. This paper includes image acquisition,
the preprocessing system, segmentation, feature extraction and recognition.
Keywords Iris recognition; preprocessing system; segmentation; feature extraction.
I.INTRODUCTION
Traditionally college staff attendance management methods were based on physical key,
ID card, password, etc. In all the above mentioned methods there are high chances of
keys getting lost, forgery or passwords may be forgotten. Due to these shortcomings and
requirement for high level of security have led to development of personal identification
on next level using biometrics. Biometrics refers to metrics related to human
characteristics. It is used to identify individuals in a group that ae under surveillance.
Within few seconds biometric recognition is able to compare thousands of records.
Biometrics are of various kinds. Iris, facial, fingerprint

he was a baby , and now years later he begins to crave demon blood. Soon Sam finds
out when he drinks the blood from a demon he gets the ability to pull demons out of

According to the World Bank, women make up 70% of the world s poor and their wages
world wide are on average 50% to 80% of men s. One third of all households word wide
are headed by women, they are responsible for half the world s food production, and
yet they own just one per cent of the world s property. The majority of workers in
sweatshops are women and the majority of unpaid labour is done by women in every

Such policies also lead to a decline in quality and increased costs for all public
systems, such as access to tap water, electricity, and public transport. Women are the first
to pay for these measures entailing harsher living conditions and a significant increase in
the free labour they must perform. When education and medical care have to be paid for
in these dependent countries, girls are the first to be taken out of school, or deprived of
vaccinations.
Furthermore, the extension on the world scale of commodity relations reinforces the
system of prostitution and other forms of human trafficking (new forms of slavery) of
which women are, of course, the primary victims.
Not only do the structures and process of global capitalism exacerbate women s situation
of oppression, they depend on it. Without women s oppression within the family,
capitalism could not perpetuate all realms of society in the way it currently does.
Many argue that the globalization of capitalism has helped emancipate women by
questioning traditional forms of domination and giving women access to wage labour
and thus their own source of income. This is the outlook of the World Bank that is
making use of a gender perspective from a neo liberal outlook (globalization provides

of science, morals and religion have spun off numerous sub issues to the effect that
people have been left either aligned to one side of the argument, or caught in the
middle, unable to choose. The key issue at hand is whether the 1973 ruling of Roe vs.
Wade should be upheld or should all abortions be illegal. The issue is so divisive
because abortion brings up closely related but unresolved moral issues, and tries to...

The inability of the sides involved to reach common ground is best observed through
a possible look at how this problem came to be. While it is easy to trace the history of
abortion, it is harder to use this information to find any means of resolution.
Developed almost 5000 years ago, the first form of birth control was utilized by the
early Egyptians. Religion played a crucial part in the view of abortion centuries after
its creation. During the 13th century, Catholic doctrine was the driving force in the
lives of the people, shaping their lives and ideals. Pope Innocent III decreed from the
moment of the quickening , or the point when the woman first feels the movement of
the fetus, the fetus was officially alive and could not be terminated. Pope Gregory
upheld this decree until 1869, where Pope Pious IX threatened all abortions with
excommunication, possibly as part of an agreement to obtain more papal power
(Childbirth Choice Trust) (Hope). From a legal standpoint, abortions were not
considered a crime until a law was passed in England in 1803, with which the United
States followed suit. The law changed to allow abortions when the woman s health was
in danger and in the early 1900 s in the U.S., the procedure could only be performed if
two or more physicians agreed to it. Throughout this entire time, women would still find
ways albeit dangerous ones to have illegal abortions (Childbirth Choice Trust). Women s
activists like Margaret Sanger promoted

Dog fighting needs to have a harsher punishment because it allows owners to train
their dogs in horrible circumstances. In one case in England, there are reports of dogs
and owners who come to children s playgrounds to train the dogs to fight. In the
article, it said the people make the dogs bite on to the equipment and hang off it to
strengthen their bite before the illegal fight. I find it absolutely astonishing that
anyone is stupid enough to train fighting dogs but to do so in children s playground
shows quite remarkable levels of idiocy and selfishness. There have been to many
reports in the media of young children being seriously injured by dogs so to train a
fighting dog in a playground and to condition it to behave violently around play
equipment which is used by toddlers is one of the most despicable things that I have
heard in a long time. said Chris Bond, the council member for the Enfield council in
England. There is also evidence found that dogs are forced to train their jaws by
ripping off bark from trees. This is killing trees as well as hurting their jaws. This is why

Social Injustice In Les Miserables
The literal meaning of the title of the book is The miserable ones . The book Les
MisГ©rables was based on the cross road of the French history, this b is all about the
social injustice in the late 18th and early 19th century France. It explains how the
miserable or the victims are damned to the life of poverty and thievery and become the
scum of French society not because they wanted to but because they needed to survive.
The main character of Les MisГ©rables is an ex convict, Jean Valjeanwho is greatly
struggling with his life, the life of Jean Valjean depicts the life of the commoners who
are struggling and constantly being exploited by the upper classes who are demanding

Victor Hugo, the author of this novel uses his novel to criticize the partial class based
structure of the 19th century France, the society structure forced and turn innocent
and good people into beggars and criminals. Hugo focused and give us a view on law
enforcement, the protagonist of Les MisГ©rables, Jean Valjean was also the victim of
this cruel society, he was just a simple bread thief but the society and law turned him
into a career criminal. This doesn t mean that stealing is a good thing to do, in fact it
is morally wrong, but Valjean was compelled to stole the bread to feed his starving
family, it was his only choice to survive in the cruel society, therefore equity is clumsy
at its best. It scarcely penalizes the worst criminals but destroy and tears apart the lives
of the unfortunate, desperate people who commit trivial crimes. Victor Hugo make us
taste a sense of the everlasting doubt that political episodes obtrude upon daily life of
commoners. Hugo criticize all the codes and system since the French Revolution for
their impotence to deal effectively with social corruption and banish France s resolute
social class even after the disband of the monarch. Hugo in this novel, focuses on the
down trodden who are almost always neglect in the society and hence the name Les
MisГ©rables meaning the miserable ones or the victims .

College Hazing Essay
Hazing in universities across the nation has become an increasingly dangerous ritual that
is seemingly becoming more difficult to put an end to due to its development into an
underground activity. Though a regular activity in the seventies, hazing, a possible
dangerous act of initiation to a group, has now become an activity that is banned in thirty
nine states (Wagner16). However, this ritual has not been stopped or become less severe.
In fact it is becoming more dangerous. Since it has been banned, with many colleges
imposing their own penalties against those participating in it, many fraternities and
sororitieshave pursued this activity in an undergroundfashion. Since these groups have
gone underground, some victims of these... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The only times that these groups, who subject individuals to hazing activities, are caught
or penalized is after the damage done to an individual is so horrible as to result in death
or hospitalization.
The act of hazing may consist of something as subtle as a pledge , one who is trying to
become a part of the group, having to answer phones at a fraternity house to extreme
hazing such as being severely beat with paddles or even bricks. Since hazing takes
many forms, it is hard for the public to realize that these pledges are actually being
harmed. It is especially hard to see the mental abuse aspect of this situation. At times,
pledges may be forced to wear humiliating items such as dog collars or diapers. It may
look like an innocent prank, and may actually seem humorous, but stunts like this can
deeply affect a person emotionally (Scleifer 42). Hazer s in Greek societies have also
been known to play the buzz saw game in which a chainsaw is held inches away from
a pledge until he/she screams in terror. This practice is used to instill respect, in the
form of extreme fear, into the pledges ( The Persistent Madness of Greek Hazing 14).
Physical hazing, however, is where the most life threatening problems are occurring.
With groups such as Omega Psi Phi of the University of Florida, who whacked its
inductees in the heads with boards, beat them with fists, and hit them with bricks, one
can only expect catastrophic results.
Hamlet Foils In Hamlet
The foils of Hamlet
In Hamlet, the main character tries to get revenge on his father s death by plotting the
murder of Claudius, but it is his indecisiveness that leads to many problems. He is
supported or opposed by characters who are considered foils to him. A foil is when a
main character is compared to another character to better reveal the characteristics of the
main character, as well as his intentions and motivations. There are many characters who
can be considered foils to Hamlet. However, the characters that truly stand as foils to the
protagonist are Laertes, Fortinbras, and Claudius. Hamlet and his foils are all put in a
similar situation, but it is how they react and deal with their issues that makes them
distinct from Hamlet. To begin with, Laertes is the most similar foil to Hamlet when
it comes to circumstance and rage. They both want revenge for their father s death,
though their method of revenge are different. Laertes is a man of action and wants to
get revenge right away after learning that his father Polonius has been killed. In
contrast to Laertes, Hamlet does not even make public knowledge of his father s
murder. Laertes doesn t procrastinate his attempt at revenge like Hamlet. However, he
is very shallow and Hamlet is a genius in comparison. Hamlet thinks of ways to plan
his revenge against Claudius, though it is his tendency to overthink that leads him to
his tragic flaw. He himself realizes that Laertes is put in a similar position to himself. I
ll be your foil, Laertes: in mine ignorance your skill shall, like a star i the darkest night,
Stick fiery off indeed (V.ii.5 7). Rage is another emotion the characters have in
common. When Laertes learns of his father s death, he gets enraged and wants to get
revenge instantly. To hell, allegiance! Vows, to the blackest devil! Conscience and
grace, to the profoundest pit! I dare damnation: to this point I stand, that both worlds I
give to negligence, let come what comes; only I ll be revenged most thoroughly for
my father. (Act 4 Scene 5 lines 128 134). Laertes says to Claudius that he will honor his
father when he says that he was in deed his father s son more than in words and that he
will kill Hamlet. To cut his throat i
The Pros And Cons Of Classifications In Biology
Classification is a matter of categorizing various living things into different groups and
therefore we can distinguish diverse species. It is absolutely crucial and takes a huge
role in our lives of human beings, who are the most developed and intellectual animals
on the planet earth. Classification gradually led to a massive development of Science,
especially Biology and eventually resulted in the creation of new classification systems
which we are pretty much aware of in the 21st century. If there were no classifications
towards the uncountable living things, the entire world would be in a definite chaos
because of approximately about 8.7 million different species(Richard Black, BBC)
getting categorized together as living things .

Comparing The Barbie Doll And The Chimney Sweeper
At first glance, the poems The Chimney Sweeper by William Blake, and Barbie Doll, by
Marge Piercy appear to have no tangible similarities. However, upon further analysis and
interpretation, they are somewhat akin. Particularly, the harsh treatment of the children,
their self image, and the use of imagery in the poems are comparable. Some of the
differences between the two poems include the time period in which they were written,
the upbringing of the characters, and also the characters reactions and solutions to the
problems that they faced. Although the setting and characters of the poems Barbie Doll
and The Chimney Sweeper are easy to contrast, the deeper meanings of the two are
tantamount. One of the chief reasons that these poems... Show more content on

Thus, it is vital to show the differences between the childhoods of the characters from
The Chimney Sweeper and Barbie Doll. The child from the Barbie Doll has a cookie
cutter childhood. The girl was born as usual / and presented dolls that did pee pee
/ and miniature GE stoves and irons / and wee lipsticks the color of cherry candy
(Piercy 1 4). Her background, unfortunately, did not protect her against all of the
dangers in the world. However, it could be assumed that if she did not have such a
fortunate childhood, she might have appreciated everything she had, instead of looking
on the bad side of things. On the other end, the boy from The Chimney Sweeper had a
traumatic childhood. The only thing the child can remember is that when [his] mother
died [he] was very young, / and [that his] father sold him while yet [his] tongue / could
scarcely cry (Blake 1 3). This boy s difficult childhood has a tremendous impact on his
outlook on life, as he grows up to appreciate the things he has, and have a positive
outlook on life. These children s upbringing affects their overall attitude towards
themselves, and their lives, and therefore impacts their lives

Specific duties and task can be assigned to employees based on their skill set. If a
member of the organization is more effective at preforming a specific task, he or she
can be assigned the role of performing that particular task. This person can be
considered a subject matter expert and will have the ability to pass on their knowledge to
fellow employees.
An example of this is the organization uses a particular backup solution to save data
and backup servers in the event of hardware failure. This backup solution is not easily
implemented or maintained and a subject matter expert is needed for any unforeseen
events that may take place. The backup solution at times will fail and backups will not
take place, leaving the most recent data that has not been backed up at risk. This
happens quite often, as there are thousands of servers that require backups everyday. An
assigned team member with in depth knowledge of the solution is able to troubleshoot,
diagnose and resolve issues much quicker then their colleagues. As this person is solely
assigned this role, the director is effectively using his skill to ensure backups are properly
running, ensuring crucial data is not lost.
Another example of assigning roles is the director has assigned teams leads for each

workforce. Particularly, they noted that those individuals with special skills are not
working in conventional ways anymore. Full time employment is also not necessary as
talent can be sourced and utilised part time and it can be borrowed from another
organisation such as hiring consultants from a consulting firm. Thus, the authors
reminded us that strategic sourcingis about choosing the right options and method of
searching and acquiring the specific talent needed by the organisation.
Employees today are also aware of their importance and the shortages of talent supply that
is why focusing on sourcing talent or recruitment is at utmost importance of the
organisation. More importantly, as an organisation sourcing for talent, it is a must to
ensure positive experience reflected on the organisation s values, are felt by the
applicants all throughout the recruitment process to ensure that the applicants maintain
its high perception to the company and as such, the applicants may then refer other
talents to the organisation. Doing so, enables the organisation to set its brand which is
now, one of the most important considerations of applicants in accepting the job offer.
Another aspect to consider is the value proposition of the organisation to the applicants
or in other words what are the skills, learning, knowledge and experiences that the
company can offer to the applicants which can be one of the factors for the applicant to
accept the job offer. Lastly, the

A Study On Sudden Infant Death Syndrome
Background Information:
The study took place in north Europe Scandinavian countries such as Denmark, Norway
and Sweden. The local paediatrician from Norway and Sweden and the forensic
institution of Denmark invited parents of sudden infant death syndromes (SIDS) to take
part in the study. Sudden infant death syndrome is the sudden, unexpected and
unexplained death of an apparently healthy baby.
There were several aims behind the study. The main aim of the study was to overlook
whether smoking was a cause of risk for sudden infant death syndrome and whether the
consequence is owed to maternal smoking during the pregnancy or to inhaling smoke
from other people s cigarettes also called passive smoking. Likewise, they wanted to
observe if the influence of smoking cessation played a big role in SIDS. They also
wanted to research whether the risk before and after the birth on SIDS in children are
different of smoking and non smoking mothers. And lastly, the results of different
smoking habits in the Scandinavian countries were investigated and analysed.
The principal objective in this case control study is to provide a valid and reasonably
good estimate answer to the unexplained deaths. In practice, this objective is usually
supplemented by several others. A typical objective would be to link the disadvantages
of smoking and health risks to the unborn baby and any other dangers smoking could
provoke.

This docility and willingness to vote according to the older Senators was most likely
caused by the new Senators fear of the political bosses. Mr. Smith, however, was
sheltered from knowing that the political bosses even existed and, as a result, was not
afraid to stand up for his beliefs. Mr. Taylor, a typical political boss of Smith s time, had
extreme power in his state and was able to tilt the public opinion of Senator Smith. He
did this through his control of the state media and connections within the government.
Taylor concocted evidence with the help of his government connections alleging that
Smith owned the property intended for the boy s camp and was only promoting the camp
bill so that he could sell his own property to the government at a high price. Taylor then
publicized these false accusations against Smith in the newspapers that he controlled,
thus persuading public opinion and ultimately causing Smith to be accused of
wrongdoing by a Senate committee. Throughout this entire entourage, Smith was too
inexperienced and naive to stand up against Taylor s political machine and resorted
instead to crying at the Lincoln Memorial. Smith only returned to the Senate after
Saunders convinced him that he should fight for his rights. This situation ultimately
proved once again that Senator Smith was too naive to be an effective Senator. Smith did
not realize that the other Senators were inclined to believe the accusations against his
character, and therefore,

indentifying main levels of threats for industry from existing rivalry, new entrants,
bargaining power of buyers, bargaining power of suppliers and substitutions. Also, same
research is being conducted for industry after ebooks emerged. Next part is looking to the

Bargaining power of suppliers High for Manuscripts of popular authors/ Low for material
Production: Two of major costs for publishers ware paper and printing. Both paper and
printing services were easily accessible and publisher could easily switch from one
supplier to another.
As a result, bargaining power of suppliers was low. In addition, in terms of printing,
publishers could choose either to outsource printing or to build their own printing
facilities, which put even more pressure on suppliers.
Manuscripts: Bestselling authors had a strong bargaining power; publishing houses even
went to auctions to buy new manuscripts. Meanwhile, new and unknown authors had low
bargaining power. For them it was important to get on the book store shelves.
Industry after advent of e books
Threat of new entrants Increased.
Internet and e books lowered barrier to enter. There are more and easier ways how
publishers can reach consumers. People have electronic devices everywhere (phones,
tablets and etc.) and small companies can reach bigger audience much easier.
Rivalry Among Existing Competitors Decreased
E books and online publishing had a significant impact on industry. Some companies
failed to keep up with technological advancement and had to run out of business. Industry
became less concentrated with fewer but stronger publishers.

Watergate Of The Watergate Scandal
Watergate Scandal The Watergate Scandal happened almost 43 years ago; the event
will never be forgotten. The Watergate scandal defined, perhaps for the first time, that
a president of the United States could be portrayed as untrustworthy. Richard Nixon
ran for a second term in 1972, in which he won by a huge margin. The Democratic
Party had their headquarters at the high end Watergate hotel. The break in happened on
June 17th, 1972, in which a security guard noticed the tape on the door lock. Five men
were found in the office and were arrested for burglary. It seemed like a mission to spy
on the Democratic Party since some of Nixon s assistants were involved in the case.
November 5th, 1968: Richard Nixon was elected the 37th president. In 1971, in the
response to the leak of the Pentagon papers which were about the Vietnam War that
went into detail that nobody in the public knew. President Nixon authorized a creation
of special investigators known as the White House Plumbers . The investigators

I call this practice reflexive embodied empathy .
To define and explicate this concept, I start by exploring some of the literature on
empathy. There is an extensive empirical literature on empathy in the fields of
neuroscience (see Thompson, 2001) and social psychology (see Davis, 1994). However, I
confine my discussion here to the equally extensive (though sometimes overlooked)
literature from phenomenology. Here, I draw on a range of theoretical ideas but the
philosophical ideas of Husserl (1928/1989) on intersubjectivity and of Merleau Ponty
(1964/1968) on embodiment as intertwining are particularly influential. While the focus
in this literature review is on empathy, concepts related to embodiment and reflexivity are
integral.
The literature review is followed by an analysis of the concept of reflexive embodied
empathy in practice. I use three examples of significant moments from various
hermeneutic phenomenological research projects to demonstrate reflexive analysis of
my own embodied, intersubjective relationships with participants. I characterize these
moments of reflective involvement with the data as fluid, interpermeating layers
whereby different dimensions of experience are called to the fore. Three co existing
layers of reflexivity are described: connecting of the Other s embodiment to our own
acting into the Other s

Why Semiotics Is A Useful Method For Analysing
Advertisements
Explain why semiotics is a useful method for analysing advertisements.
Straight away when thinking of signs one would automatically think road signs, star
signs or even pub signs however signs can also be drawings, paintings and photographs
as well as words, sounds and body language. The study of signs and symbols is also
known as semiotics. Ferdinand de Saussure was a Swiss linguist and semiotic whose
ideas laid a foundation for many significant developments; He is one of the founding
fathers of semiotics which he called semiology . Semiology also looks into the use of
signs and their interpretation. Semiotics are frequently used in advertising to signify
an advertisers message through the use of signs and symbols for example it plays a
significant role on catching the targets audiences eye by the placement of pictures,
texts and logos. The use of semiotics is very important for a successful advert. Saussure
offered a two part model of a sign, he defined a sign being composed of two parts for
example the signifier and the signified. According to Saussure the signifier was the
representation, the word or the image, where as the signified was the meaning, the
concept in which is associated with the signifier. This is why semiotics is so useful in
advertisements because a sign straight away has a connotation behind it and can give
away the message straight away to its audience for example the signifier is always going
to be signified. In an advert if you see a packet of
Speech Reflection Paper
Giving speeches is something I have enjoyed for several years now. Getting up in
front of a class is difficult sometimes, but I always try to put my best foot forward
when giving a speech. This year in Fundamentals of Oral Communication, I feel that I
was able to grow even more as a speaker and presenter. After reading all of my
evaluations and rewatching my speech, I now am more aware of what I can still improve
upon and what I improved on just in the last couple years. Something that is very
important to me is getting my point across clearly and concisely. I try to do this by
developing and supporting my argument or my topic. Both of the topics that I chose
this year in class are something that I am very passionate about. Due to this, I felt I put
in lots of research and practice to make sure my audience would understand my
message. My first topic was sailing, which is a sport I have participated in for
approximately seven years now, so I wanted to put in the effort so my audience could get
a bettergrasp at what the sport is. My persuasive topic was why humans should not be
afraid of sharks; this is another topic that I feel very passionate about. I did lots of
research because I really wanted my audience to absorb everything I was saying, as well
as take action for such an important issue. Organization is a key component to creating
an effective speech and I feel that organizing a speech properly is one of my strong suits.
Forming an outline and rearranging it until it all goes together smoothly is one thingI
believe I am very good at. I try to organize speeches in a manner so that it builds, one
layer on top of another. The organization of my speeches is what makes them easier to
understand, even if I mess up in other areas. For example, when I organize a speech I
try to start out with my opener, then my closing statement, followed by my transitions in
the speech; by doing this I create the skeleton of my speech. Then I can continue by
moving things around till it flows correctly, adding in the core parts of the speech, and
finishing up with the previews and signposts. Opening is another thing that I believe is
one of my strengths as well as giving an internal preview throughout the speech.
Reflection On Service Learning
Service Learning Final Reflection
We rise by lifting others, said Robert G. Ingersoll. I was very literally lifting others
during my service at the YMCA. To specify, I was lifting children (when required).
Literally lifting or not, the quote still rings true. A person can become better by putting
someone else in front of themselves from time to time. This idea is exemplified in service
learning where both the individual and the community benefit from the individuals
helping of others. For this service learning experience, I volunteered at the Kid Zone in
the St. Cloud YMCA and gained real world knowledge while helping others. I gained a
better understanding about the idea of service learning, the organization, the
community, and my overall self. Looking back on my small twelve hours of
commitment, I know it made big differences to those I was helping. While I m taking
stock of what I ve achieved and given over the past weeks, I know I ve gained a better
understanding of what service learning is. For me it s important to engage I service
learning because it goes far deeper than community service and requires a person to
really analyze what they are doing. Adding the goal of learning makes the experience
more focused and beneficial for both parties. It s also important I personally practice the
idea of service learning, because I often volunteer without thinking critically about why I
m there. Service learning, for me, requires me to dig deeper than this is good for the

  • 3. Marriage Is A Sacred Action, And The Bondage Between... Marriage is a sacred action, and the bondage between individuals is powerful. Marriage is one of the greatest moments in ones lifetime. Throughout different cultures marriage has a different meaning. In some groups, marriage and your spouse is not your decision and in others you can have multiple spouses. There are several different forms of marriage and different cultures practice those marriages in different ways. Marriage brings about happiness but in some cases it can bring grief and discipline. Marriage is a bond between individuals and no matter the circumstances, whether it s for power or love, any form of marriage should be recognized. The definition of endogamy is a marriage within a particular group or category of individuals (Cultural Anthropology, 204). Cultures who practice this type of marriage require that the marriage be within his or her social group, or ethnicity. For instance, certain areas of India, especially the Hindu community, practice endogamy. Marriages outside of their social group are forbidden and extreme consequences, from disowning to death, will be given. [Endogamy] is a common practice among displanted cultures attempting to make roots in new countries as it encourages group solidarity and ensures greater control over group resources. It helps minorities to survive over a long time in societies with other practices and beliefs (New World Encyclopedia). Endogamy marriages helps to bond the cultures to become stronger by not allowing

  • 5. Chimney Sweeper William Blake William Blake proved himself as one of the most influential artists to spring from the Romantic Era without a doubt. What made Blake so popular may have been his ability to portray his time period in works of art that were beautifully crafted. Blake s poetry was not appreciated during his lifetime because people were living the lives his works vicariously told, but once his time period ended, a historical book was left behind. The theme of a struggle is most prominently showcased in Blake s poetry. Whether it be Blake depicting women and their power struggle throughout the 18th or 19th century, or depicting the lives of the children put into the labor force at a very early age. The color white makes a second appearance in the first The Chimney Sweeper here, Then naked and white, all their bags left behind . This passage literally shows the childrens innocence because their young bodies were bare. When a newborn enters the world, this is truly the most innocent time in ones life. Through Blakes allusion to the naked, pure, and free bodies he is emphasizing their continued innocence. The irony of the color white in this passage is showcased because more than 65% of the chimney sweeps were black (Simkin 1), restating that the color white is only inserted in the poem to symbolize innocence (Smith 1). The transition from The Chimney Sweeper in Songs of Innocence to the other The Chimney Sweeper in Songs of Experience is a jurassic change of perspective by the narrator. In the second poem, no faГ§ade is placed on the fact that the children are not innocent. The first line of this poem references the lack of innocence, A little black thing among the snow, and like previously stated, it is understood that the color white signifies innocence so on the contrary, the color black represents corruption. Tom Dacre again states that he knows his life is a tragic one when he says, They clothed me in the clothes of death. This is directly
  • 6. The Dark Horse By James Napier Robertson In today s society people tend to hear the word bipolar and automatically assume crazy, nutcase or weird. In the film Dark Horse directed by James Napier Robertson, we could see how Genesis Potini broke all stereotypical thoughts of having the mental illness of bipolar. Throughout all these trials that Genesis went through he always came out on the other side. This made me wonder why having a bipolar illness is a terrible illness to have in life. My hypothesis was that people who suffer from bipolar live terrible lives. To test this my hypothesis I came up with the following questions: How is bipolar illness treated in New Zealand?, what causes bipolar illness? and how is bipolar viewed in the Tongan culture. What is the cause of bipolar illness ? Most of my resources agreed with my hypothesis by stating that bipolar suffers do have terrible lives by not knowing the exact cause of bipolar. There are some presumable causes of bipolar which is thought to be caused by faulty genes that have been passed down from generation to generation. (Dr. Nick Stafford Dr.John H. Noseworthy, 2012,2011) My first source, emphasizes that there is no exact cause of bipolar illness but there is a lot of factors that could be considered (John.Noseworthy,2012). This also links to my second resource which stated that an aspect resulting to bipolar was to do with the number of faulty genes in the nucleus carried on from generation to generation forming early stages of bipolar. Therefore

It s Game 3 of the World Series between the New York Yankees and the Chicago Cubs. And the grandstands are jam packed with nearly 50,000 fans. The Yankees are back on top of their game after a three season drought of titles and accolades. In this Series, the Yanks are managed by Joe McCarthy, the manager who had been fired by the Cubs after the 1930 season. On this day, the Yankees are up 2 games to none over the Cubs in the Series. And, it was in this game, that one of Babe s biggest legends is born The Called Shot. Before the start of the game, the tension between the teams is high. Was it truth, rather than legend? Was Babe pointing at the spot he planned to land his homer or was he pointing at Root? Or was he simply gesturing in general? No one really knows for sure. But the legend was born. And likely was written in stone that same day, when the sports editor for Scripps Howard newspapers wrote the following headline that appeared in the New York World Telegram: Ruth Calls Shot as he Puts Home Run No. 2 in the Side Pocket. From there, the story got picked up elsewhere and other reporters reiterated on the theme of the Called

The Roman armies of four forces that were sent out were outmanoeuvred and easily defeated. Spartacus won another three fights before a new roman military force under the control Marcus Crassus was sent to deal with the rebellious slave army. Eventually after long pursuits of battles, Spartacus was killed near the headwaters of the Siler River in southern Italy, but his body was never found. Crassus then crucified 6,000 rebellious slaves as a warning to others. Qin Shi Huang The next figure I will be introducing is a tyrant ruler from the China Dynasty. His father was the king of the Qin state, and at the age of thirteen his father passed away. He was well educated and at the age of 22, he took full control of his title as king. He had the ambition of wanting to master all the other six Chinese states. This made him the leader of all of china, and eventually he declared himself emperor. His real name was King Zeng. Another one is analyzing officially recorded criminal justice events like arrests, convictions, and supervision violations and commitments to jail or prison. Moreover, charting a

  • 14. Kant s Categorical Imperative Essay In contrast to the consequentialist focus of utilitarianism, Kant was more focused on intent and action itself. This leads into one of Kantian ethics main ideals; you mustn t treat another human being as a means to an end. Kant s Categorical Imperative (CI) is a deontological theory, which relied heavily on his belief that humans are all capable of reason in the same manner, on the same level (A Brief Summary of Kant s Categorical Imperative, 2012). Kant recognized 2 kinds of moral imperatives , a hypothetical imperative (what must be done to achieve a desired result) and Categorical imperatives (how one must act irrespective of one s end goal/desires). For Kant, all moral duties were considered to be categorical, and should apply to everyone universally. Kant believes that truthfulness is the formal duty of everyone, regardless of what disadvantage it may cause to yourself or another (Kant, 1994). He illustrates this quite well by using his categorical imperative, saying that if all people were to lie, then all contracts and laws would lose their legitimacy. Kant also went on to point out that if we were to lie, even from a place of good intention, it is impossible to control the outcome(s) and we may be responsible for whatever comes from it (Kant, 1994). However if we were to tell the truth then we have upheld our duty and as such can shoulder no blame for any consequences. Kant came up with the Categorical Imperative (CI), a theory of universal moral law which he

A Research On Biometrics And Wireless Technique Abstract The main purpose of the paper is assembling and developing an iris recognition system in order to verify uniqueness of the human eye of faculty in a college for attendance management system. This system based on biometrics and wireless technique solves the problem of spurious attendance and the trouble of laying the corresponding network. Here biometric recognition is performed with respect to iris because of its unique biological properties. The iris is unaffected by external environmental factors and remains stable over time. It can make the college staff attendance management more easy and effective. This paper includes image acquisition, the preprocessing system, segmentation, feature extraction and recognition. Keywords Iris recognition; preprocessing system; segmentation; feature extraction. I.INTRODUCTION Traditionally college staff attendance management methods were based on physical key, ID card, password, etc. In all the above mentioned methods there are high chances of keys getting lost, forgery or passwords may be forgotten. Due to these shortcomings and requirement for high level of security have led to development of personal identification on next level using biometrics. Biometrics refers to metrics related to human characteristics. It is used to identify individuals in a group that ae under surveillance. While it is easy to trace the history of abortion, it is harder to use this information to find any means of resolution. Developed almost 5000 years ago, the first form of birth control was utilized by the early Egyptians. Religion played a crucial part in the view of abortion centuries after its creation. During the 13th century, Catholic doctrine was the driving force in the lives of the people, shaping their lives and ideals. Pope Innocent III decreed from the moment of the quickening , or the point when the woman first feels the movement of the fetus, the fetus was officially alive and could not be terminated. Pope Gregory upheld this decree until 1869, where Pope Pious IX threatened all abortions with excommunication, possibly as part of an agreement to obtain more papal power (Childbirth Choice Trust) (Hope). From a legal standpoint, abortions were not considered a crime until a law was passed in England in 1803, with which the United States followed suit. The law changed to allow abortions when the woman s health was in danger and in the early 1900 s in the U.S., the procedure could only be performed if two or more physicians agreed to it. Throughout this entire time, women would still find ways albeit dangerous ones to have illegal abortions (Childbirth Choice Trust). Women s activists like Margaret Sanger promoted

Since hazing takes many forms, it is hard for the public to realize that these pledges are actually being harmed. It is especially hard to see the mental abuse aspect of this situation. At times, pledges may be forced to wear humiliating items such as dog collars or diapers. There are many characters who can be considered foils to Hamlet. However, the characters that truly stand as foils to the protagonist are Laertes, Fortinbras, and Claudius. Hamlet and his foils are all put in a similar situation, but it is how they react and deal with their issues that makes them distinct from Hamlet. To begin with, Laertes is the most similar foil to Hamlet when it comes to circumstance and rage. They both want revenge for their father s death, though their method of revenge are different. Laertes is a man of action and wants to get revenge right away after learning that his father Polonius has been killed. In contrast to Laertes, Hamlet does not even make public knowledge of his father s murder. Laertes doesn t procrastinate his attempt at revenge like Hamlet. However, he is very shallow and Hamlet is a genius in comparison. Hamlet thinks of ways to plan his revenge against Claudius, though it is his tendency to overthink that leads him to his tragic flaw. He himself realizes that Laertes is put in a similar position to himself. Why did she do it? This was what I repeated to myself in my head. And with Dean? The boy who I had warned her about all these years. The boy who I thought she knew was dangerous. I guess she didn t know after all. I thought we both knew cheating was wrong. I knew what Bridgette would think of this, if she knew Charlotte had even touched Dean. We both know what she does. What she did. Bridgette could and would destroy Charlotte. I guess this is a secret I ll have to keep. I decided to text Charlotte. I knew I couldn t tell it to her face... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Of course, I didn t know everything. Maybe the kiss was all. Maybe it was nothing. Maybe I ll have to find out myself what it really meant. I scanned my closet to see if there was anything suitable I had to wear. I picked out a black lace dress that I had brought a week ago. It was expensive, but it would show that I had the money. I looked down at my assortment of shoes, and pulled out some black strappy heels. Not as expensive, but they looked like it. I was getting dressed for one of Deans infamous parties. They were always full of drugs, alcohol, and sex. Everyone was invited. Everyone could do what ever they wanted. Except touch Dean, of course. I put the dress on and pulled up the zip on the side. I slid the heels on my feet, and did up the straps. I walked over to my mirror and looked at my reflection. I knew the dress would ve looked better if I had weighed less, but I know a little extra weight doesn t matter to the boys. As long as you had boobs, a butt, and your name was Bridgette Vinetta, every boy in the school would be drooling over you. And the funny thing is that I look extremely similar to her in the dark. If you re drunk, of
  • 31. A Study On Sudden Infant Death Syndrome Background Information: The study took place in north Europe Scandinavian countries such as Denmark, Norway and Sweden. The local paediatrician from Norway and Sweden and the forensic institution of Denmark invited parents of sudden infant death syndromes (SIDS) to take part in the study. Sudden infant death syndrome is the sudden, unexpected and unexplained death of an apparently healthy baby. There were several aims behind the study. The main aim of the study was to overlook whether smoking was a cause of risk for sudden infant death syndrome and whether the consequence is owed to maternal smoking during the pregnancy or to inhaling smoke from other people s cigarettes also called passive smoking. Likewise, they wanted to observe if the influence of smoking cessation played a big role in SIDS. They also wanted to research whether the risk before and after the birth on SIDS in children are different of smoking and non smoking mothers. And lastly, the results of different smoking habits in the Scandinavian countries were investigated and analysed. The principal objective in this case control study is to provide a valid and reasonably good estimate answer to the unexplained deaths. In practice, this objective is usually supplemented by several others. A typical objective would be to link the disadvantages of smoking and health risks to the unborn baby and any other dangers smoking could provoke. The study design: The study type they used is a case control study. A

Mr. Smith s naivetГ© was most evident in his ambitious proposal to start a national boys camp. However, when false allegations regarding Mr. Smith s motives for starting the camp surfaced, Smithwas too idealistic to defend himself from the political machine that accused him of acting in self interest. This docility and willingness to vote according to the older Senators was most likely caused by the new Senators fear of the political bosses. Mr. Smith, however, was sheltered from knowing that the political bosses even existed and, as a result, was not afraid to stand up for his beliefs. Mr. Taylor, a typical political boss of Smith s time, had extreme power in his state and was able to tilt the public opinion of Senator Smith. He did this through his control of the state media and connections within the government. Taylor concocted evidence with the help of his government connections alleging that Smith owned the property intended for the boy s camp and was only promoting the camp bill so that he could sell his own property to the government at a high price. Taylor then publicized these false accusations against Smith in the newspapers that he controlled, thus persuading public opinion and ultimately causing Smith to be accused of wrongdoing by a Senate committee. Throughout this entire entourage, Smith was too inexperienced and naive to stand up against Taylor s political machine and resorted instead to crying at the Lincoln Memorial. Smith only returned to the Senate after Saunders convinced him that he should fight for his rights. This situation ultimately proved once again that Senator Smith was too naive to be an effective Senator. Smith did not realize that the other Senators were inclined to believe the accusations against his character, and therefore,

Both paper and printing services were easily accessible and publisher could easily switch from one supplier to another. As a result, bargaining power of suppliers was low. In addition, in terms of printing, publishers could choose either to outsource printing or to build their own printing facilities, which put even more pressure on suppliers. Manuscripts: Bestselling authors had a strong bargaining power; publishing houses even went to auctions to buy new manuscripts. Meanwhile, new and unknown authors had low bargaining power. For them it was important to get on the book store shelves. Industry after advent of e books Threat of new entrants Increased. Internet and e books lowered barrier to enter. His gang doesn t read books or watch movies like he does. The greasers just work hard and long on cars at gas stations. Ponyboy has potential though, he is smart. I m different that way. He felt like he was an outsider to everyone because he was different. People in his gang had gone to jail and Ponyboy stayed good, different. Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... I call this practice reflexive embodied empathy . To define and explicate this concept, I start by exploring some of the literature on empathy. There is an extensive empirical literature on empathy in the fields of neuroscience (see Thompson, 2001) and social psychology (see Davis, 1994). However, I confine my discussion here to the equally extensive (though sometimes overlooked) literature from phenomenology. Here, I draw on a range of theoretical ideas but the philosophical ideas of Husserl (1928/1989) on intersubjectivity and of Merleau Ponty (1964/1968) on embodiment as intertwining are particularly influential. While the focus in this literature review is on empathy, concepts related to embodiment and reflexivity are integral. The literature review is followed by an analysis of the concept of reflexive embodied empathy in practice. I use three examples of significant moments from various hermeneutic phenomenological research projects to demonstrate reflexive analysis of my own embodied, intersubjective relationships with participants. I characterize these moments of reflective involvement with the data as fluid, interpermeating layers whereby different dimensions of experience are called to the fore. Three co existing layers of reflexivity are described: connecting of the Other s embodiment to our own acting into the Other s

D2 The Legal Environment Analysis The Legal Environment DB2 Name Course Date Tutor The Legal Environment DB2 Ethical violation examples I belong to a company which happens to be a major player in the manufacturing and retail sector. The company has had a few ethical issues as pertains to the way it treats employees and how it disposes of waste. The labor force is underpaid and waste products are disposed of in water bodies posing an environmental threat. Considering the size and clout with governmental authorities it is unlike the company will face legal issues, but the corporate social responsibility department is virtually in the toilet which does not aid the public image. There are other examples of these issues in other companies as explained in the following text. The first company is one of the largest technological corporations in the country and they handle a number of things like mobile phones, televisions, household appliances and even software. By all rights, the corporation is quite profitable in its field; however, there are ethics issues that have come up. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... They conduct oil drilling in South America and Asia and process the crude oil to provide valuable petroleum by products which are not only sold in the country but on the international market. The trouble with this company is the way it disposes its waste. In both scenarios for the first and second companies, they are likely to not face legal charges even though these are clear ethical violations of their mandate in producing goods needed by the market. However, their social outlook is going to suffer quite a bit as the public is going to continue to associate the corporations with the ugly side of corporate culture which may ultimately affect their sales and client
  • 39. Why Semiotics Is A Useful Method For Analysing Advertisements Explain why semiotics is a useful method for analysing advertisements. Straight away when thinking of signs one would automatically think road signs, star signs or even pub signs however signs can also be drawings, paintings and photographs as well as words, sounds and body language. The study of signs and symbols is also known as semiotics. Ferdinand de Saussure was a Swiss linguist and semiotic whose ideas laid a foundation for many significant developments; He is one of the founding fathers of semiotics which he called semiology . Semiology also looks into the use of signs and their interpretation. Semiotics are frequently used in advertising to signify an advertisers message through the use of signs and symbols for example it plays a significant role on catching the targets audiences eye by the placement of pictures, texts and logos. The use of semiotics is very important for a successful advert. Saussure offered a two part model of a sign, he defined a sign being composed of two parts for example the signifier and the signified. According to Saussure the signifier was the representation, the word or the image, where as the signified was the meaning, the concept in which is associated with the signifier. This is why semiotics is so useful in advertisements because a sign straight away has a connotation behind it and can give away the message straight away to its audience for example the signifier is always going to be signified. In an advert if you see a packet of
  • 40. Speech Reflection Paper Giving speeches is something I have enjoyed for several years now. Getting up in front of a class is difficult sometimes, but I always try to put my best foot forward when giving a speech. This year in Fundamentals of Oral Communication, I feel that I was able to grow even more as a speaker and presenter. After reading all of my evaluations and rewatching my speech, I now am more aware of what I can still improve upon and what I improved on just in the last couple years. Something that is very important to me is getting my point across clearly and concisely. I try to do this by developing and supporting my argument or my topic. Both of the topics that I chose this year in class are something that I am very passionate about. Due to this, I felt I put in lots of research and practice to make sure my audience would understand my message. My first topic was sailing, which is a sport I have participated in for approximately seven years now, so I wanted to put in the effort so my audience could get a bettergrasp at what the sport is. My persuasive topic was why humans should not be afraid of sharks; this is another topic that I feel very passionate about. I did lots of research because I really wanted my audience to absorb everything I was saying, as well as take action for such an important issue. Organization is a key component to creating an effective speech and I feel that organizing a speech properly is one of my strong suits. Forming an outline and rearranging it until it all goes together smoothly is one thingI believe I am very good at. I try to organize speeches in a manner so that it builds, one layer on top of another. The organization of my speeches is what makes them easier to understand, even if I mess up in other areas. For example, when I organize a speech I try to start out with my opener, then my closing statement, followed by my transitions in the speech; by doing this I create the skeleton of my speech. Then I can continue by moving things around till it flows correctly, adding in the core parts of the speech, and finishing up with the previews and signposts. Opening is another thing that I believe is one of my strengths as well as giving an internal preview throughout the speech.
  • 41. Reflection On Service Learning Service Learning Final Reflection We rise by lifting others, said Robert G. Ingersoll. I was very literally lifting others during my service at the YMCA. To specify, I was lifting children (when required). Literally lifting or not, the quote still rings true. A person can become better by putting someone else in front of themselves from time to time. This idea is exemplified in service learning where both the individual and the community benefit from the individuals helping of others. For this service learning experience, I volunteered at the Kid Zone in the St. Cloud YMCA and gained real world knowledge while helping others. I gained a better understanding about the idea of service learning, the organization, the community, and my overall self. Looking back on my small twelve hours of commitment, I know it made big differences to those I was helping. While I m taking stock of what I ve achieved and given over the past weeks, I know I ve gained a better understanding of what service learning is. For me it s important to engage I service learning because it goes far deeper than community service and requires a person to really analyze what they are doing. Adding the goal of learning makes the experience more focused and beneficial for both parties. It s also important I personally practice the idea of service learning, because I often volunteer without thinking critically about why I m there. Service learning, for me, requires me to dig deeper than this is good for the
