Relevance And Authenticity Of Instruction
M Relevance and authenticity in instruction really stood out as memorable to me this week. It is
mentioned that connection to real meaning can make or break learning (Reiser and Dempsey, p.
58). I completely agree that teaching skills in isolation or without any real connection can result in
temporary memorization, but no long term retention or the ability to transfer that knowledgeto new
situations. I appreciate the authors pointing out that to maximize the likelihood of meaningful
learningoccurring, students need to ... work on problems that a) mean something to them
personally and b) are rich and complex enough to invoke real expertise (Reiser and Dempsey, p.
58). If students are shown that the knowledge is relevant and needed in real world situations, they
are more likely to internalize the information for long term use. This is an area that I need to make
sure is addressed in my instruction going forward.
A I agreed with Reiser and Dempsey (p 352) when they discussed that everyone in a group learns
information in different ways. While this statement in the text was referring to assistive
technologies, I believe it is true of any learner. There are many different styles of learning and
preferences for acquiring and demonstrating knowledge. To provide students with the most effective
learning environment, it is best to provide choices in how to interact with information. Some
students may benefit from having access to PowerPoint presentations while

What Is The Legend Of Zelda
The Evolution of Legend of Zelda
The Legend of Zelda is an video game series created by Nintindo, and is one of the most iconic
series in video games. In many ways The Legend of Zelda revolutionized the video game industy
and made it become what it is today. So what made this series so recognizable? The open world?
The sound track? The adventure? Or just the sheer thrill of figuring out one of the game s many
puzzles? To answer that let s take a look at the history and evolution of The Legend of Zelda.
The creator of Legend of Zelda, Shigeru Miyamoto was inspired by the hillsides, forests, and caves

The Empty Corridor As A Tall Slender Woman
Planes Footsteps echoed down the empty corridor as a tall, slender woman made her way
towards a certain room. Though having walked down here many times, the eerie, cold feeling of
the building sent visible shivers down her spine. The alabaster walls had a tinge of grey and it
seemed that no matter how many people were present, this could not hold even the slightest
touch of warmth. She stopped short in front of the familiar wooden door. Raising a hand, she
rapped gently three times before unlocking the door and pushing it open. The room was dark,
saved for the soft glow of the moonlight that flooded in. The woman looked around the spacious
room before her attention finally landed on the lonesome figure in a corner. It was a boy no
more than six years old. His blonde hair was slightly dishevelled and covered his eyes. His eyes
they were different from the usual kids his age. Rather than holding a cheerful and mischievous
glint in them, they were glassy and hallow. He stared unblinkingly at the woman at the doorway
and though she did not outwardly show it, it unsettled her. She could feel the hairs at the back of
her neck stand on end and a cold sweat starting to form but she swallowed and forced a smile as
best as she could. Jerome, she called gently, it s bed time. The little boy turned, eyes focusing on
what he was doing prior to the woman entering. His eyes small fingers gripped tightly onto the
model plane he was playing with, but obediently, he stood and

The Paradox Of Gladiators
Often seen as working class heroes, Roman Gladiators have become an icon to the it is nearly
impossible to think of the Roman Empire without the association of
Gladiators were a paradox within Roman society. They were viewed both as the superstars of
their day , but also ranked in the lowest tier of Roman society (Baker, 2000, pg.3). This unique
relationship of being held in contempt while also being adorned made the relationship of gladiators
to Roman society very interesting because it influenced why people might participate in the games.
Although the majority of gladiators were slaves, some were volunteers, women and political
figures. Slaves were a part of the gladiator games because they didn t have much say. Their owners

This was done in grades of gladiator training called Palus . The highest attainable grade for a
gladiator was Prime Palus . At this point, the gladiator was not only a huge asset to the ludus, but
also viewed as teacher who could pass along wisdom to other gladiators.
The paradox of gladiators continues within the school because they live in prison like conditions
and are still viewed as slaves, but because they had the potential to earn large profits for their
masters they were well taken care of in many areas. They usually received three meals a day, and
the best gladiators were also privy to treats. After examining bones from gladiator graveyards,
evidence suggest Gladiators ate a largely vegetarian diet. Hollywood movies often misinterpret
gladiators as travelers. Gladiators didn t travel from city to city for combat, they usually just fought
in the cities they lived in. Another misconception is that the gladiators fought as a team because
that is depicted in movies. Each man or woman was on their own unless they were specifically
participating in a style of fighting where there was more than one

Dna Testing And The Criminal Justice System
Convictions prior to the advancement of DNA testing in the criminal justice system were
commonly found to be later wrongful and due to eyewitness misidentification (Scheck Neufeld,
2001). Hence, there has been increasing research by psychologists in eyewitness memory and
particularly in line up practices. In criminal identification, a simultaneous line up (SIM) is typically
used and involves presenting the witness with all line up suspects at once with the offender (target)
placed amongst other innocent suspects (foils) that resemble the offender (Wells Olsen, 2003).
With these conditions, witnesses have a tendency to compare suspects with each other in order to
determine the one that have the closest resemblance with the offender, a process called relative
judgement (Steblay, Dysart, Fulero Lindsay, 2001). In the simultaneous line ups with target present,
there are more hits as the closest resemblance is the perpetrator but while in target absent
conditions, the closest matching foil is often picked and resulting in more false alarms (Steblay,
Dysart, Fulero Lindsay, 2001). Therefore, to prevent the potential of misidentification, alternative
line up presentations have been developed to inhibit relative judgement processes such as
sequential line up in Lindsay and Wells (1985). Sequential line ups (SEQ) involves presenting a line
up of photos in a sequential format and eyewitnesses can only view the photo once and must
determined whether the photo matches the

Parallelism In Psalm 1
Initially, Psalm 1 first begins with blessed is the one who does not walk in step with the wicked
or stand in the way that sinners take or sit in the company of mockers (Psalm 1, New
International Version). Furthermore, after analyzing the passage I have determined the type of
Hebrew parallelism this passage exhibits is synthetic or formal parallelism. Therefore, synthetic
or formal parallelism is defined as nonparallel text, where the second line of the text contributes
to the first line (Tullock McEntire, 2012, p. 190). Consequently, the main theme of the passage is
to identify how the believers of the Lord blessed, or how to achieve divinity while avoiding the
doubters of God. Next, Psalm 1:5 reads therefore the wicked will not

There are many ways of learning. Every person learns differently. However, it is irrefutable that
everybody learns via actions. In Coates novel, Between the World and Me, he discusses his
education through living in the world opposed to just reading about it. The knowledge you earn
from experiencing is in my opinion way more worthwhile than the knowledgeyou receive from a
classroom. So, what is the difference between the places you may learn? To begin, in the
classroom the history we are taught differs from what we live. We learn about our country s
resilience, our strength, our bravery. Coates makes a point on this he states, America makes no
claim to the banal. America believes itself exceptional, the greatest and noblest nation to ever...

The New Imperialism In The 16th Century
Imperialism
Imperialism is the total domination of the political, economical, or cultural aspects or a nation.
Imperial colonization has been occurring sense the beginning of time. An imperialistic nation would
increase its importance and power by winning an empire. Some takeovers were forced by political
rivalries. One nation might seize a territory to prevent a competitor from expanding into that region.
Some nations would expand to boost their economic value, or personal wealth. Imperialism
advances a countries politics, society, and economic value into a powerful money making country.
Imperialism could be defined as a policy of a country of gaining new territories and establishing
nation s dominance of political, economic, and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Many people who weren t pleased with their economic and political status could migrate to new
regions to find other opportunities. Others were inspired to spread the word of Christianity and
sought a new standard of living. But most importantly, Europeans were concerned with the quest
for material goods and to grow rich (textbook pg. 878).
The new imperialism :
Imperialism has developed two very different meanings in history and in time. The imperialism of
the 16th century was much less rapid and dominating than that of the new imperialism Вќ of the
19th century. Imperialism in a sense means the extension of one nation s power over other lands.
Imperialism in the 16th century was just the colonization of North and South America and the set
up of a few trading posts in Africa. In the 19th century however, imperialism grew to mean the total
domination of one area in direct rule of the mother country.
There were two different time periods where Imperialism occurred. The first wave of imperialism,
called the Old Imperialism, lasted from around 1500 1800. The New Imperialism lasted from
around 1870 1914. The three main differences that we will discuss today are the differences in
economics, politics, and the motive behind all of

Types Of Reproduction And Asexual Reproduction
Introduction:
We explored the reproductive system. It is important because without it all living things would
become extinct.
The two different types of reproduction are sexual and asexual reproduction. Types of asexual
reproduction include binary fission, budding, and fragmentation. Budding is when another
organism grows out of the parent cell, and separates once it s fully developed. Fragmentation is
when an organism splits into more pieces which each form into their own organism. Binary fission
is when the parent cell copies its genetic material and then splits into two. The advantages of
asexual reproduction are that it produces a lot of offspring, takes little energy, and is speedy. The
disadvantage is that the offspring are clones. Types of sexual reproduction include external and
internal fertilization. External fertilization means that the eggs are fertilized outside of the two
parent organisms, while internal fertilization happens inside of the two parent organisms. The
advantages of sexual reproduction is that the offspring vary genetically. The disadvantages are that
there are fewer offspring, it takes longer, it requires more energy, and a partner must be found.
Gametogenesis is the production of gametes. There are two kinds of gametogenesis, oogenesis and
spermatogenesis. Oogenesis happens in the ovaries, and makes eggs. It only happens during fetal
development, and produces two polar bodies and one ovum. Spermatogenesis happens in the testes,
and occurs

Theme Of Love In Siddhartha
Love comes in a variety of different ways, feelings, states, and attitudes that range from
interpersonal affection to pleasure. It can be an emotional attraction and personal attachment. It can
also represent human kindness, compassion, and affection. There is not one single definition of
love. We all know the feeling of loving multiple people in multiple different ways. We love
our
parents differently than we love our children, we love our children differently than we love our
one night stand, and we love our one night stand differently than we love our significant other.
People show and receive love in varied ways, all distinctly different from one another. In

In loving a friend, we have to let them go when they need to go and say what needs to be said
even when they do not want to hear it. Hesse quickly displays this type of love in the relationship
between Siddhartha and Govinda. By his side lived Govinda his shadow, walking the same path,
submitting himself to the same exertions (15). As Siddhartha counties his journey, Govinda makes
the choice to live on his own to follow the ways of life as a Shramana. As a friend, we always
want to see the best for each other, Siddhartha quickly comes to realization that though he never
thought Govinda would go on his own that is the best for him:
Then he spoke gently in a voice without a trace of scorn: Govinda, my friend, now you have
taken the step, now you have chosen the path. Always, o Govinda, you have been my friend,
always you have walked one step behind me. Often I have thought: Will Govinda never once take
a step alone, without me, from his own soul? See, now you have become a man and you yourself
are choosing your path. May you walk it to the end, o my friend. May you fine

Clint Eastwood s _Letters from Iwo Jima_ Essay
In 2006, a film directed by Clint Eastwood was released in theatres around the world titled
Letters from Iwo Jima. Unlike most war movies that are produced for the American public, this
film entirely captures the World War II battle of Iwo Jima from the perspective of the enemy. For
a rare change, Letters from Iwo Jima shows the cultural aspect and daily life the Japanese soldiers
experienced during the war. Although the film was given many positive reviews and was noted as
one of the best films of 2006, it still received mixed emotions from both the Japanese and American
public. One of the main ideas of the film focuses on the idea that good and evil exist on both sides,
and that although we share different ideas, thoughts, traditions,... Show more content on

The Japanese soldiers went into battle knowing that they would be killed and they would not
make it off the island. One of the most shameful acts for a Japanese soldier to do is surrender, and
it was very common for the soldiers to commit suicide before turning themselves in to the enemy.
To commit suicide and avoid capture of the enemy was considered noble and heroic in the
Japanese military. In a way, the soldiers were brainwashed into doing anything for the emperor of
Japan and were told over and over how glorious it is to die on the battlefield for their country.
During the film, one Japanese soldier points out that Japan will win the war due to the fact that the
Americans show too much sympathy and emotion for human life, and do not have the same desire
and will that the Japanese have. One of the main themes presented in Letters from Iwo Jima is the
idea that good and evil always exist on both sides. Much of the time, war films tend to show
favor to one country, leaving the audience close minded to what happens to the other side. One of
the main characters followed in the film is the Japanese Commander of Iwo Jima, General
Kuribayashi. Unlike any other Japanese Commander, Kuribayashi was very familiar with the
American people and spent a good deal of time visiting the United States prior to the war. Despite
the strict and abusive tactics used by the Japanese Generals to the lower ranking soldiers,

Synopsis (not part of speech): Brief Summary
It s about how 4 elderly people take part in an experiment of Dr.Heidegger s. Where they become
younger after drinking an elixir that supposedly came from the fountain of youth, however the
effect of the elixir doesn t last very long. Dr.heidegger watches his 4 guests as they go from

decide to move to Florida to drink from the fountain 3 times a day.

As implied in the title he is conducting an experiment, however it is not as simple as it seems.
Firstly one may wonder what exactly is his experiment. You see it isn t just about how this
proclaimed water from the Fountain of Youth can change you to become young, it is about the
behaviour of those once they do become young, do they become even more obnoxious than they
already were, or does something else happen? Just before drinking the Elixir from the fountain
of youth he warns them, It would be well that, with the experience of a lifetime to direct you,
you should draw up a few general rules for your guidance, in passing a second time through the
perils of youth. Think what a sin and shame it would be, if, with your peculiar advantages, you
should not become patterns of virtue and wisdom to all the young people of the age! (Line 64)
The experience of a lifetime is telling them that they are to expect something of great pleasure,
however the perils of youth are showing that going back to being young again could make them
more desperate than ever. He is warning them to not act foolishly once they become young, for
they would have many advantages by becoming young yet if too desperate it could cause

Forrest Gump is a romantic and satirical modern film in which relates to romanticism in many
ways. The Romantic hero is portrayed in the story as Forrest Gump himself, and would be classified

themes related to romanticism, tells an intriguing story of the unintelligent good hearted Forrest,
which embarks in a journey full of surprises and historical moments with an air of innocence.

Forrest, the main character, is the representative figure of this theme, as he demonstrates that
everything he accomplishes is irrational, without any reason involved in his actions. Forrest, being
the absolute romantic hero in the plot, demonstrates that the human is not essentially reasonable
and rational. By his own irrational acts, Gump is awarded with many values in his life, and
executes many of his actions without any critical thinking involved. A great example of this idea is
shown when Forrest in quietly sitting in his porch and decides to go for a small run. Instead of
going on a little run, Forrest resolves that he will keep running for no reason, and that if he could
run to the end of the town, then he could run to the end of the county, then run to the ocean, then
run across the country. This example demonstrates how Forrest is not the smartest and brightest
person, but he has a different feeling for things. Although not always having a logical reason for his
actions, if he feels that he has to execute something, he must do it as long as he feels that he has to
do it. Forrest actions, in the contrary, instead of putting him in unfortunate situations, it always
rewards him with the best of life. Gump has an intuitive, deep understanding of life, as everything
he is confronted with, he must stop and deeply understand each experience. Human nature is

Canada As A Target For Potential International Expansion
Introduction Exploring which countries might be a good match for an US based firm who is
looking to enter a foreign market, can be a very complex process. Financial resources,
competitive products or services, sales and distribution channels as well employee skill levels and
talent are all factors which should weigh heavily into choosing the right country for any particular
businesses expansion. For purposes of this paper, I will focus on Canadaas a target for potential
international expansion, examining several pertinent factors which I believe to be critical to a
successful expansion project.
Canadian Economy The Canadian banking sector has remained stable, and weathered the global
financial crisis with no need for bailouts from the Canada government, and inflation has been
modest since 2010. The Canadian economy is technically in a recession, due largely to the slump
in oil prices with the energy sector accounting for over 25% of Canada s GDP (Time, 2015).
However, other economic indicators reflect very little downturns in consumer spending, and job
creation in the country is at a healthy pace. According to an article appearing in the Financial Post,
the Canadian economy performed at a better pace in the quarter than the United States (Isfeld,
2015), indicating a robust economy with excellent potential for product expansion.
Culture, Language and Religion Canada is a very diverse country which has been greatly influenced
by British and French cultures and

increase in launch capacity from its predecessor (Hendrix, At What Cost a Carrier? 6). An
aircraft carrier is only as effective as its air wing. Therefore the potential sortie number for a
carrier versus its cost can accurately be used to determine the effectiveness of the carrier. When
comparing the Ford class to the Nimitz class, Hendrix argues that the nation is paying nearly 94
percent more for a carrier that can only do 33 percent more work (At What Cost a Carrier? 6).
Although some members of the Navy believe the increase in the output of the new Ford class
carriers to be significant enough to justify the increase in cost. This is reflected in their willingness

The Implications of Current Child Policy for the Welfare...
The Implications of Current Child Policy for the Welfare of Children
Children in the United Kingdom are key consumers of social policy. They consume a vast
amount of the many services provided by this Country. Services such as health care through
Doctors, hospitals and clinics, the education system which is largely devoted financially to the
schooling of young people, and also the social security system which is stretched by children
whose parents are in need of income support or family tax credit. (Alcock, Erskine May, 2002) All
of these services contribute to the well being of the young people of this Country. However,

The welfare of children in the United Kingdom is one of the most important items for the
government in terms of social policy. (Ellison Pierson, 1998) The Children Act 1989sets out
legislation to provide for numerous circumstances which could occur in a child s life and cause a
detrimental effect on his or her well being. Examples of the guidelines that are included in the act
are briefly summarised here: The 1989 Act provides guidance for custody of children for issues
such as the divorce of parents, neglect, sexual/physical and mental abuse or future risk. (Blakemore,

Family Systems Theory
In 1966, following decades of psychoanalytic work, his directorship of the Family Project (1954
1959) at the National Institute of Mental Health (citation), and driven by a belief that
psychodynamic theory failed to provide conclusive scientific support to the etiology of emotional
symptoms (Innis, 1996), Dr. Murray Bowen(1913 1990) published what some regard as one of the
first theories examining familyfunctioning, the Bowen Family Systems Theory (renamed Bowen
Theory in the mid 1970 s).

Victor The Real Monster In Frankenstein
In the novel Frankenstein, the real Monster is Victor himself. It s simple to understand and very
clear to see. He may not look like one or realize that it is him, but many things throughout the
book point you to the conclusion that the creature isn t the monster. It stuck out to me the entire
time reading this, but there were a couple spots that really made me realize who the real monster
was. For example in Ch. 5, where he startled himself by his own creation and again in Ch. 11 Ch.
17 when the creature began to explain his journey and experience. Throughout chapter 5, many
things convinced me that Victor was the real monster. For starters, when he finally finished his
creation and got scared himself because of how hideous it looked. It obviously wasn t his
intentions to make him look so bad, but he then didn t even except the creature as his own. He
wanted nothing to do with it, his experiment failed, and he was scared to know what it was capable
of. Well, what he didn t know was that without the love and care it needed, the outcome was even
worse than what he thought. The father figure in this novelis Victor, while the creature is the child ,
and like most parents who don t know the responsibilities, they just throw them away and let
someone else care for their own child. This comes into play a little later when the creature... Show

Deism and Changes in Religious Tolerance in America Essay
Deism and Changes in Religious Tolerance in America
Religious conscience in America has evolved considerably since the first settlers emigrated here
from Europe. Primary settlements were established by Puritans and Pilgrims who believed their
errand into the wilderness [America] was above all else a religious errand, and all institutions town
meeting, school, church, family, law must faithfully reflect that fact (Gaustad 61). However, as
colonies grew, dissenters emerged to challenge Puritan authority; indeed, many of them left the
church to join untraditional religious sects such as the Ranters, the Seekers, the Quakers, the
Antinomians, and the Familists (Westbrook 26). Debates over softening the stance on tolerancein ...

Rejecting the assumption that God controls all actions on earth, most Deists believe that God
created the universe, [. . .] and then disassociated himself from his creation (Robinson 3). This
definition leads to the supposition that deistic thought was partly conceived out of scientific
discovery: a Darwinian takeover theory. Perhaps the nuances of scientific knowledge manifested a
directive in the argument for religious freedom. Certainly, Deist s supported what Benjamin
Franklin termed, spiritual Liberty, which asserted that no man ought to resign his Liberty, in
mak[ing] Choice of his Minister as his Judgement and Conscience direct him (qtd. in Walters,
Franklin 138). Thomas Paine, Deism s most notable advocate, maintains this line of thinking
saying, I do not believe in the creed professed by [. . .] any church that I know of, but, I do not
mean this declaration to condemn those who believe otherwise; they have the same right to their
belief as I have to mine (22). Religious tolerance would gain many formidable voices among
America s Founding Fathers, a development that poses a challenge to the harsh dogmatic attitude of
early Puritan leaders.
Intolerance for opposing views in religious matters was a renowned element in Puritanical practices
during the seventeenth century. Few persons had the courage to speak against church doctrine, as it
would certainly pronounce their expulsion. One such person, Roger Williams,

Anton Chekhov s The Cherry Orchard
Anton Chekhov s The Cherry Orchard Analysis of Comedic Characters Anton Chekhov s The
Cherry Orchard is one of his most famous plays, despite the fact that the comedic aspect is often
questioned. The Cherry Orchard records the tale of a wealthy Russian family who are faced with
the loss of their estate due to bankruptcy, while also facing the reality of losing their beloved
cherry orchard. Titled as a comedy, it seeks to disclose the familyand household dynamics during
this brief period. The wealthy family is in so much debt that they are being forced to sell their
beloved cherry orchard, a symbol of the affluent past that the family was accustomed to. The Cherry
Orcharddoes not appear to be a comedy in our modern day sense of the word, which is the reason
that it can be so difficult for the 21st century reader to understand why the play is labeled a
comedy and not a tragedy. In Checkhov s work, the characters are one of the most prominent
comedic forces driving the play. French philosopher Henri Bergson s once summarized comedic
character by saying that, Comedic character is rigid or inflexible in circumstances that demand a
resiliency of the mind or body (Fiero). Through the lens of this definition, we conclude that the
primary circumstances that demand(s) a resiliency of the mind or body for the characters in The
Cherry Orchard are the selling of the cherry orchard and the loss of their class prominence. We
will be considering Chekhov s comedic style

Comparison Of Romeo And Juliet 1996 And 1996
Romeo and Juliet is one of the most commemorated and referenced plays in the history of the
world. Because it is so popular, many variations of the play exist. Since different ideas about the
play have produced a multitude of different reenactments, lots of plays out there have many
differences. Three of these versions, Two of which are movies made, one in 1968, the other in
1996, and the last is an actual play production on Broadway in 2014, have many differences and
similarities. What we can interpret from these variations is that even though the words on the script
may not change, with time, culture can alter the appearance and mood of the production. Romeo

Some of these similarities come between Romeo + Juliet (1996), and Romeo and Juliet (1968).
Both of these productions are movies, and such allows the viewer to get a better visual
experience of the script by Shakespeare. Two two of these share many qualities, such as the
Montagues and Capulets being two of the wealthiest houses in Verona, and a very open conflict
between each other. The two of these also share some contrast. In the 1968 film, both houses
were Caucasian, however, in the 1996 film, there is an ethnic difference between the Montagues,
who are white, and the Capulets, who are Hispanic, except for Juliet and Juliet s direct family.
Another difference is that the fight between the houses in the 1996 version was more gang
related, violent, and involves the use of firearms, while the 1968 version is a chivalrous conflict,
and cheap swords, not guns, are used. What s also the same between these two is that the setting in
both of these have hot climates. Rome, Italy, which is where the 1968 version was filmed,
typically has warmer temperatures year round. Los Angeles, California, where the 1996 film was
set has hot and dry temperatures and weather, especially in the

America Has Too Much Gun Control Essay
When a person hears the word gun, he or she usually associates the purposes and uses of a gun
with crime related issues and plots of terrorism because of modern culture. They are used for that
purpose by some people, but those people do not represent all aspects of the relationship of
firearms to society. In the United States, many laws have been passed in order to regulate the use of
guns by certain individuals, along with the establishment of associations that specialize in the usage
and handling of firearms. With the regulation of firearms passed by the government, guns has
become an integral part of modern society, attributing atrocities such as homicide with them, but
also providing a portable means of protection. The addition... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

Under the United States Constitution, Article V, Amendment II, all people have the right to
bear arms, allowing them to own a gun and use it, but the government believes some types of
guns, such as automatic rifles, should not be accessible to people, violating the Constitution (
Gun Control ). On February 28, 1994, the Brady Bill was passed by congress to add more
conditions on firearms by establishing a five day waiting period to people purchasing a handgun
in order to give enough time for a licensed dealer to conduct a background check on the customer
(Agresti). Not only do customers have to wait additional days in order to receive their handguns
for protection, but they are evaluated by a stranger to see if they are competent enough to do as
much as even own a gun. Associations such as the National Rifle Association (NRA) have been
established in order to comply with government concerns of firearms by creating licenses for
gun owners and teaching proper use of firearms. As of March 17, 2010, the National Rifle
Association of America, Institute for Legal Action has released news that House Bill 453
(HB453) and House Bill 542 (HB542) were released and have added the possibility of allowing
the storage of firearms in specialized car compartments and increasing voting registration for
people with hunting licenses or permits in order to promote pro gun usage in society respectively.

Jean Piaget And Lev Vygotsky
There are many theorists who have discovered different things about child development. Jean
Piaget and Lev Vygotsky are two of those many theorists. Both of these theorists have their own
beliefs on how children develop. Jean Piaget and Lev Vygotsky differ in their developmental
theories, how their theories help the intellectual development in children and the similarities in their
theories. A developmental theory is a theory that a scientist has proven to be true for a child s
development. According to Karen Stephens (2015), Jean Piagetbelieves that children develop
cognitive skills based on how they mature, interact with others, and react and adapt to their physical

His studies showed that at any stage of life, thinking skills of individuals are similar. (pg.142)
The first stage of Piaget s theory is based on infancy years. This stage is the sensorimotor stage.
This age range is from birth to two years of age. In this stage, infants begin to learn about their
surroundings and the world by using their senses. At the beginning, they rely on their reflexes to
learn, but then use more purposeful movement to enhance their learning. The second stage is the
preoperational stage. This age range is from two years to seven years of age. In this stage,
toddlers and younger children begin to communicate by using language. They need to be given
hands on experiences and imaginative play. These are key for a child s development. The third
stage is the concrete operational stage. This age range for this stage is from seven years to
eleven years of age. When children are at this stage they are beginning to think logically about
things. They are beginning to make generalizations, classify different objects, and are suggesting
solutions to their own problems or their peers problems. The final stage is the formal stage. This
age range is from 11 years of age and older. During this stage children and young teenagers are
beginning to ask what if questions. They are starting to make predictions about certain things.

The Ho, Roberts And Gelman Article, Essentialism And...
The Ho, Roberts and Gelman article Essentialism and Racial Bias Jointly Contribute to the
Categorizations of Multiracial Individuals examined the joint effects of cognitive biases and social
biases on hypodescent. Loosely, hypodescent can be defined as individuals penchant to categorize
mixed race individuals into solely the raceof the minority category (Ho et al., 2015). While
previous studies have examined the effects of cognitive biases and social motivation on
hypodescence respectively, the authors were motivated by the dearth of available studies that
examined the effects of cognitive biases and social motivations jointly. Since both cognitive biases
and social motivations require higher levels of cognitive processes, it can be inferred that the
researchers would endorse a top down view of perception, especially when it comes to racial
categorization(Psych 240 Lecture 9/14/15). The researchers hypothesized that subjects who
exhibited essentialist thinking the belief that individuals belong to specific discrete groups in
which members share inextricable qualities in conjunction with high levels of anti black bias
would exhibit hypodescence, by categorizing Black White multiracial individuals into solely a
Black racial category. Since essentialism plays an integral role in the article, it is fruitful to
examine the concept using different perspectives. Perhaps the most obvious way to think of racial
essentialism is to view it in the terms of categorization. In

The Decline Of Native American And Inupiat Culture
The American government and society has played a substantial role in the decline of both the
Native American and Inupiat culture. They created inhumane boarding schools and oppressing
laws that inhibited those of a different culture from being themselves and partook in the
urbanization of cultured communities. The following practices need to be stopped and never
forgotten so that such ethnocide doesn t happen again. Boarding schools were an issue that
plagued both Native Americans and Inupiats. As conveyed by the writings of Mary Crow Dog
and other Native American figures, we see how the effects of such schools were devastating to the
native population. Boarding schools wiped Natives of their language and culture, teaching young
children to be ashamed of what makes them unique. Pupils would return from their long stays at
boarding schools, unable to speak to their own family, resulting in an isolation between themselves
and their community. Over the years, generations would eventually lose most of what makes them
native and, for the most part, their culture slowly faded away. It seems that the Inupiat people
faced a similar fate. Inupiat children were forced to learn by Western standards, eventually
forgetting their crucial survival skills, language, religion and other unique aspects of their culture.
However, we are exposed to a more positive outlook towards boarding schools in the book, Fifty
Miles from Tomorrow, where William Hensley says he enjoyed his boarding school

Descriptive Essay About Rain
The cold sensation comes again, letting off a warning of the impending danger that was soon to

clothing. Instead, she would browse these magazines for pictures and cut them out.
Also known as Ches, the 22 year old BA Art Studies student from the University of the Philippines
Diliman loves slashing magazines. Gatpayat would separate collage worthy pictures from those not
and then would start gluing her selected images meticulously in a piece of hard paper. Aside from
her promoting traditional collage making, she has since used this as an avenue for self expression.
And the central theme of her works? Loneliness.
As a kid, Gatpayat felt lonely due to her parents being absent even if they were physically there.
She said her would father leave for work early morning while her mother would leave at night. In
school, I had friends, but at the end of the day, I m not with them, Gatpayat said in Filipino. ... Show

It s not really a bad thing being alone, it s not a bad thing being lost, the budding artist said.
Her views on these matters were translated into her artworks. She has been fond of using the
elements of the sea, which, she said, symbolizes her being a lonely tiny speck in its vastness a self
reflection that keeps her from making more and more sea related collages.
I m always compelled to making art, I always wanna make something, Gatpayat said. And I really

Review Of Black Like Me By John Howard Griffin
The book Black Like Me is a nonfiction book by journalist John Howard Griffin. It is about a white
journalist who used medication to darken the pigment of his skin to expose the harsh truth about
the South and their discriminatory laws against blacks, in his case black men. Although I am not
bold enough to go through such a transformation, this piece of literature has allowed me to see how
far one has to go every so often in order to prove a point and uncover the truth while educating
millions of people. Having been previously taught with the British curriculum and now the
American I have come to the realization that the education of foreign countries ,other than the
dominant ones, are lacking. Although there are world history classes they

Essay on The Fly by Katherine Mansfield
The Fly Having read many pieces of literature through short stories, it is evident that each story
has its own unique use of symbolism. Diverse characters in each work of literature are used to
demonstrate these forms of symbolism. The boss and his inner conflict illustrate a great deal of
symbolism in The Flyby Katherine Mansfield. The boss s perception of the actions of the fly
creates an interesting view of the comparison of his father son, father fly relationship. Katherine
Mansfield, a famous realist, who uses concrete images, appeals to many readers because she
incorporates her life into the stories she writes. Much attention is paid to the central character, the
boss and his life (Schoenberg). It is interesting... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
He overwhelms his son by taking control of his future and planning out his life. The boss s plan
for his son is to take over the business which gives the son no other choices or opportunities
concerning his future. Ever since his birth, the boss has worked at building up his business for
him; it had no other meaning if it was not for the boy (Mansfield 508). It seems as though the
physical action of the boss smothering the fly is associated with the sufferings that his son has
experienced. Both the boss s son and the fly go through similar yet different forms of suffering
throughout their lives. Interestingly, while the fly is struggling to live, the boss utters, Come
on, Look Sharp (Mansfield 509), just as he would say to his suffering son. Both the fly and
victims of wartime fighting (his son) are innocently killed by cruel forces over which they have
no control (Schoenberg). The antagonist is the character or force that represents the opposition
to the protagonist and is the source for conflict. Mr. Woodifield plays the roll of the antagonist in
The Fly . He is a former employee of the boss who comes by the office to visit once a week. The
two men usually talk, catch up, and enjoy each other s company. Mr. Woodifield is not in great
health because of a stroke. The boss is five years older than him and is illustrated as being in much
better shape. Poor old chap, he s on his last pins, thought the boss

Stroop Effect Analysis
Attention is something that is extremely important to always have. In chapter three, the author
stated attention can be defined as a concentration of mental activity that allows you to take in a
limited portion of the vast stream of information available from both your sensory world and
memory (Shomstein, Styles, Weierich Barrett, p.79). In the Stroop Effect I can see that a person
need to have a lot of concentration in able to do it the right way. When doing the first activity it
took me about two minutes to be able to name the ink colors of the words five time through. In the
next activity it took me about five minutes to be able to name the colors in the rectangular patches
in part B five times through. It was harder than I expected

The Utilization Of Prescription Drug
The utilization of prescription drug has increased in recent times. The availability of these
medications has resulted in the treatment of numerous infections and ailments. These drugs
alleviate chronic pain, depression and anxiety, sleep apnea, and much more. For an efficient health
system, the main goal is to provide quality health care to all patients. However, over the years,
there have been many legal and health controversies over drugs and the effects that they have on
the body. The process of prescription drugstarts from a lab and ultimately sojourns with the end
user. The drugs undergo testing and are often developed to treat a specific disease before being
reviewed by the Food and Drug Administration(FDA).
Healthcare organizations use formulary systems in order to efficiently dispense prescription drugs.
According to Steiner (2014), a formulary system is an ongoing process whereby healthcare
organization establishes policies regarding the use of drugs. This system also identifies the best
medically appropriate and cost effective drugs to best serve patients. The process of this method
includes a list of drugs approved by healthcare professionals. Some of the issues involved in
implementing formulary systems stem from legal challenges such as anti substituting or generic
substituting laws, federal and state drug laws, and trademark laws (Steiner, 2014). In the case of anti
substituting or generic substituting, it is imperative that pharmacists are quite

How Did Maya Deren Influence The Modern World
An opinion of Modernism: Maya Deren s influential path to the birth of true expressionistic film
and it s effect on the modern world. Maya Deren s films Meshes of the Afternoon, and A Study in
Choreography for the Camera have inspired filmmakers for more than fifty years, and have helped
create an independent cinema for modern times. Throughout my essay I will annalise two films
and then discuss Maya Deren s effect on the modern world. In 1942 Maya Deren and a man named
Alexander Hammid created Meshes of the Afternoon. Shot on a 16MM camera, Meshes of the
Afternoon would be The first narrative filmin the history of the American avant garde (Geller, T.
(2006) This film would have further influence on the rest of Maya Deren s career. This film is
also still talked about today and discussed in film history classes as one of the most influential
films, in history during a very masculinist avant garde art world. (Geller, T. 2006) Maya Deren

What am I looking at? Am I comfortable or uncomfortable? Do I know what s going on? What is
the concept I am looking for? Maya Deren s films were meant more for the audience to form
their own opinion and have an emotional free thought without using dialogue. She wanted you
to have you question these things because those were the questions she was probably asking
herself when she created her films. Every filmmaker is always questioning the direction they are
going in, they wouldn t be good filmmakers if they weren t always curious. Maya Deren was
always curious, therefore always experimenting with film, she wanted to test how far could she
go with each idea she had, what angle, what type of film; how it could be distorted further. Deren
was constantly playing with time and re creating it. She was ceaselessly changing her idea and
vision of art and film. She wanted to push film as far as she

Douglas Macarthur Legacy
General Douglas MacArthur
Douglas MacArthur was a United States general born in 1880 in Little Rocky, Arkansas and
passing away in 1964 buried in his mother s hometown of Norfolk, Virginia. He is known most
notably for his defense of the Philippines during World War II although it ended in Japanese
occupation of the islands. MacArthur was raised by a military family, devoted his life to the army
in both world wars as well as the Korean War, and was loved immensely by the American public
throughout the twentieth century. Although the end of the Korean War saw some troubles with the
command of MacArthur due to the struggles with the opposition from North Korea, he eventually
was forced to retire, but this did not take away from his strong influence around the world as well
as powerful legacy that allowed him to become a household name. ... Show more content on

plantation. They moved around constantly due to the fact that his father, Arthur MacArthur Jr.,
was in the army, but MacArthur fought in several wars such as the Civil War and the Spanish
American War. Before Douglas MacArthur was even born, MacArthur Jr., his father, was a
general in the Union Army and a federal judge appointed by President Grant. His father and his
decorated career as a high ranking officer in the military had a strong impact and influence on his
life and choices, especially the ones that led to him following in his father s footsteps. All his life
he would seek to be a man at arms in whom his father could have exulted (Manchester, 64)

Hurricane Harvey Hurricane
Natural disasters have costed the government a massive amount in the past years. Hurricanes
such as Katrina left people in Florida, Haiti, Louisiana and other parts of the gulf feeling
helpless. Katrina ravaged states along the coast of the gulf making it the most expensive damage
from a natural disaster, 108 billion dollars. However, in 2017, the disasters required over three
hundred and ten billion dollars for repairs (Bowden, 2017). How will this be paid for? Will the
government have to cut budgets from other programs? Over five natural disasters have struck the
United Statesand surrounding countries this year. These disasters consisted of hurricanes,
mudslides, wildfires, flooding, and earthquakes. Hurricane Harvey hit approximately number major

Hurricane Irma crippled Puerto Rico with one of the largest blackouts in history. CNN reported
last month that only twenty six percent of the electricity in Puerto Rico had been restored since
the hurricane ripped through in September (Levenson, 2017). It has been over three months and
over half of their population is lacking electricity and clean water. By the time Irma reached
Florida, it regained momentum and flooded Miami with over twenty inches of rain (Weather
Channel, 2017). This resulted in a state of emergency and complete shutdown of the city. Also,
Orlando and Walt Disney World experienced some aggressive winds and thunderstorms. Wildfires
engulfing California reached ten billion dollars in repair costs. This estimated cost was shared
before the fires roared into Southern California. Solutions to this continued problem could include
reserving more funds into the natural disasters budget. This would provide a safety net for the
citizens of the affected state along with the salaries of those helping such as firefighters and

Defining Couples Hiv Testing And Counselling
1.Overview Couples HIV Testing and Counselling
HIV Testing and Counselling
HIV antibody tests were first issued by the World Health Organization in 1992 (WHO, 1997), since
then with frequent update of recommendation, and advancement in innovation (Rotheram Borus et
al., 2000) HIV testing and counselling continue to be the gateway to HIV prevention, essential
treatment and care (Fonner et al., 2012, WHO, 2012b). Knowing one s HIV status used to be
considered as a death sentence. However, after having the right treatment peoples view changed
into considering the status as a chronic condition (Bedingfield et al., 2014). Thus the development
of life saving drugs for HIV/AIDS patients markedly shifted policies to encourage uptake of HIV
testing(WHO, 2012b). In spite of that, WHO/UNAIDS in 2014 reported that, globally not more
than half (49% 58%) of people living with HIV know their serostatus (WHO, 2015b, UNAIDS,
2014b). To address this gap, in 2014 a new global 90 90 90 target introduced in called to reach at
least 90% of all people living with the virus to know their HIV status; 90% of all those diagnosed
with HIV infection to receive sustain antiretroviral therapy; and 90% of all those initiated the
treatment to have viral suppression by the year 2020 (UNAIDS, 2014a).
To achieve the diagnosis goal, both client and provider initiated service deliveries are implemented
in various countries to increase access to HIV testing and counselling. Despite these efforts, the
uptake of

The Causes for the Conflict between Palestinians and Israelis
Conflict Between Palestinians and Israelis; The Cause
Against a backdrop of an ever increasing number of internal conflicts and the crash of
conventional means of conflict resolution to attain a resilient peace in divided societies, this paper
presents a two track approach to peacekeeping and conflict resolution. One track is represented by
peacemaking, defined as endeavors at finding a resolution to the issues in conflict at the political
leadership level. The other track, peacebuilding, refers to contact proposals at the grassroots level
targeting at the enhancement of intergroup relations. After a conversation of role of grassroots
peacebuilding in a peace process some groundwork findings on the bond between peacemaking and
peacebuilding in two divided societies, Palestine and Israel, will be discussed.
War is not a common phenomenon anymore after the post cold war era. According a research
conducted on active armed conflict across the world at the Uppsala University in Sweden, of all
the 101 active armed conflicted between the late 80s and mid 90s, only six were actually between
two different states (Solenberg Wallensteen, 1997). These statistics clearly indicates that the
conflict in today s world is more internal and ethnic based.
The majority of the states are ethnically diverse. Nation state is a loosely used term since
according to one survey conducted in the early 70s indicated that out of 132 nations only 12 were
truly nation states. Similarly in 1983 out of

How Did Christian Teachings Affect The Creation Of Human...
To what extend did Christian teachings affect the creation of human rights
Human rights are basic to humanity. They are supposed apply to all people everywhere. Though
in our modern society, we acknowledge the importance of human rights, it took a long time for
mankind to set down the human rights that we all deserve and to reach to where we are now. In
this essay, the focus will be on how much Christian teachings and traditions influenced the creation
of human rights. It s possible to see the influence based on different written laws made toward
creation of equal rights. Such as, the US s Declaration of Independence , the French Declaration of
the Rights of Man or the UN s Declaration of the Human Rights. Christianity s biblical notions
support many of the articles found in those declarations. Christian teachings had an overall
significant impact on the development of modern human right. ... Show more content on

The bible says that man is created according to the image of God, thus, the murder of another man
is of the highest offense. Whoever sheds the blood of man, by man shall his blood be shed, for
in the image of God, has God made man . The Mosaic Law also continues to give a lot of
examples on how God expects us to treat each other humanely. Ten Commandments also forbids
murder, stealing, adultery, lying and crave certain things. These rules help us treat each other
morally and equally. Other examples would be to treat immigrants well (Exodus 22:21; Leviticus
19:33 34), help the poor with their needs (Leviticus 19:10; Deuteronomy 15:7 8), specifically give
loans to the poor with no interests (Exodus 22:25) and to allow indentured servants to retire after

  • 2. Relevance And Authenticity Of Instruction M Relevance and authenticity in instruction really stood out as memorable to me this week. It is mentioned that connection to real meaning can make or break learning (Reiser and Dempsey, p. 58). I completely agree that teaching skills in isolation or without any real connection can result in temporary memorization, but no long term retention or the ability to transfer that knowledgeto new situations. I appreciate the authors pointing out that to maximize the likelihood of meaningful learningoccurring, students need to ... work on problems that a) mean something to them personally and b) are rich and complex enough to invoke real expertise (Reiser and Dempsey, p. 58). If students are shown that the knowledge is relevant and needed in real world situations, they are more likely to internalize the information for long term use. This is an area that I need to make sure is addressed in my instruction going forward. A I agreed with Reiser and Dempsey (p 352) when they discussed that everyone in a group learns information in different ways. While this statement in the text was referring to assistive technologies, I believe it is true of any learner. There are many different styles of learning and preferences for acquiring and demonstrating knowledge. To provide students with the most effective learning environment, it is best to provide choices in how to interact with information. Some students may benefit from having access to PowerPoint presentations while ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 4. The Empty Corridor As A Tall Slender Woman Planes Footsteps echoed down the empty corridor as a tall, slender woman made her way towards a certain room. Though having walked down here many times, the eerie, cold feeling of the building sent visible shivers down her spine. The alabaster walls had a tinge of grey and it seemed that no matter how many people were present, this could not hold even the slightest touch of warmth. She stopped short in front of the familiar wooden door. Raising a hand, she rapped gently three times before unlocking the door and pushing it open. The room was dark, saved for the soft glow of the moonlight that flooded in. The woman looked around the spacious room before her attention finally landed on the lonesome figure in a corner. It was a boy no more than six years old. His blonde hair was slightly dishevelled and covered his eyes. His eyes they were different from the usual kids his age. Rather than holding a cheerful and mischievous glint in them, they were glassy and hallow. He stared unblinkingly at the woman at the doorway and though she did not outwardly show it, it unsettled her. She could feel the hairs at the back of her neck stand on end and a cold sweat starting to form but she swallowed and forced a smile as best as she could. Jerome, she called gently, it s bed time. The little boy turned, eyes focusing on what he was doing prior to the woman entering. His eyes small fingers gripped tightly onto the model plane he was playing with, but obediently, he stood and ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The Paradox Of Gladiators Often seen as working class heroes, Roman Gladiators have become an icon to the it is nearly impossible to think of the Roman Empire without the association of Gladiators were a paradox within Roman society. They were viewed both as the superstars of their day , but also ranked in the lowest tier of Roman society (Baker, 2000, pg.3). This unique relationship of being held in contempt while also being adorned made the relationship of gladiators to Roman society very interesting because it influenced why people might participate in the games. At this point, the gladiator was not only a huge asset to the ludus, but also viewed as teacher who could pass along wisdom to other gladiators. The paradox of gladiators continues within the school because they live in prison like conditions and are still viewed as slaves, but because they had the potential to earn large profits for their masters they were well taken care of in many areas. They usually received three meals a day, and the best gladiators were also privy to treats. After examining bones from gladiator graveyards, evidence suggest Gladiators ate a largely vegetarian diet. Hollywood movies often misinterpret gladiators as travelers. Gladiators didn t travel from city to city for combat, they usually just fought in the cities they lived in. Another misconception is that the gladiators fought as a team because that is depicted in movies. • 6. Dna Testing And The Criminal Justice System Convictions prior to the advancement of DNA testing in the criminal justice system were commonly found to be later wrongful and due to eyewitness misidentification (Scheck Neufeld, 2001). Hence, there has been increasing research by psychologists in eyewitness memory and particularly in line up practices. In criminal identification, a simultaneous line up (SIM) is typically used and involves presenting the witness with all line up suspects at once with the offender (target) placed amongst other innocent suspects (foils) that resemble the offender (Wells Olsen, 2003). With these conditions, witnesses have a tendency to compare suspects with each other in order to determine the one that have the closest resemblance with the offender, a process called relative judgement (Steblay, Dysart, Fulero Lindsay, 2001). In the simultaneous line ups with target present, there are more hits as the closest resemblance is the perpetrator but while in target absent conditions, the closest matching foil is often picked and resulting in more false alarms (Steblay, Dysart, Fulero Lindsay, 2001). Therefore, to prevent the potential of misidentification, alternative line up presentations have been developed to inhibit relative judgement processes such as sequential line up in Lindsay and Wells (1985). Sequential line ups (SEQ) involves presenting a line up of photos in a sequential format and eyewitnesses can only view the photo once and must determined whether the photo matches the ... Therefore, synthetic or formal parallelism is defined as nonparallel text, where the second line of the text contributes to the first line (Tullock McEntire, 2012, p. 190). Consequently, the main theme of the passage is to identify how the believers of the Lord blessed, or how to achieve divinity while avoiding the doubters of God. Imperial colonization has been occurring sense the beginning of time. An imperialistic nation would increase its importance and power by winning an empire. The new imperialism : Imperialism has developed two very different meanings in history and in time. The imperialism of the 16th century was much less rapid and dominating than that of the new imperialism Вќ of the 19th century. Imperialism in a sense means the extension of one nation s power over other lands. Imperialism in the 16th century was just the colonization of North and South America and the set up of a few trading posts in Africa. In the 19th century however, imperialism grew to mean the total domination of one area in direct rule of the mother country. There were two different time periods where Imperialism occurred. The first wave of imperialism, called the Old Imperialism, lasted from around 1500 1800. The New Imperialism lasted from around 1870 1914. • 13. Types Of Reproduction And Asexual Reproduction Introduction: We explored the reproductive system. It is important because without it all living things would become extinct. The two different types of reproduction are sexual and asexual reproduction. Types of asexual reproduction include binary fission, budding, and fragmentation. Budding is when another organism grows out of the parent cell, and separates once it s fully developed. Fragmentation is when an organism splits into more pieces which each form into their own organism. Binary fission is when the parent cell copies its genetic material and then splits into two. The advantages of asexual reproduction are that it produces a lot of offspring, takes little energy, and is speedy. The disadvantage is that the offspring are clones. Types of sexual reproduction include external and internal fertilization. External fertilization means that the eggs are fertilized outside of the two parent organisms, while internal fertilization happens inside of the two parent organisms. The advantages of sexual reproduction is that the offspring vary genetically. The disadvantages are that there are fewer offspring, it takes longer, it requires more energy, and a partner must be found. Gametogenesis is the production of gametes. There are two kinds of gametogenesis, oogenesis and spermatogenesis. Oogenesis happens in the ovaries, and makes eggs. It only happens during fetal development, and produces two polar bodies and one ovum. Spermatogenesis happens in the testes, and occurs ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

It can be an emotional attraction and personal attachment. It can also represent human kindness, compassion, and affection. There is not one single definition of love. We all know the feeling of loving multiple people in multiple different ways. We love our parents differently than we love our children, we love our children differently than we love our one night stand, and we love our one night stand differently than we love our significant other. Unlike most war movies that are produced for the American public, this film entirely captures the World War II battle of Iwo Jima from the perspective of the enemy. For a rare change, Letters from Iwo Jima shows the cultural aspect and daily life the Japanese soldiers experienced during the war. Although the film was given many positive reviews and was noted as one of the best films of 2006, it still received mixed emotions from both the Japanese and American public. One of the most shameful acts for a Japanese soldier to do is surrender, and it was very common for the soldiers to commit suicide before turning themselves in to the enemy. To commit suicide and avoid capture of the enemy was considered noble and heroic in the Japanese military. In a way, the soldiers were brainwashed into doing anything for the emperor of Japan and were told over and over how glorious it is to die on the battlefield for their country. During the film, one Japanese soldier points out that Japan will win the war due to the fact that the Americans show too much sympathy and emotion for human life, and do not have the same desire and will that the Japanese have. One of the main themes presented in Letters from Iwo Jima is the idea that good and evil always exist on both sides. Much of the time, war films tend to show favor to one country, leaving the audience close minded to what happens to the other side. One of the main characters followed in the film is the Japanese Commander of Iwo Jima, General Kuribayashi. The Romantic hero is portrayed in the story as Forrest Gump himself, and would be classified as a perfect figure in Romanticism nowadays. The contemporary film in which promotes many themes related to romanticism, tells an intriguing story of the unintelligent good hearted Forrest, which embarks in a journey full of surprises and historical moments with an air of innocence. Forrest, the main character, is the representative figure of this theme, as he demonstrates that everything he accomplishes is irrational, without any reason involved in his actions. Forrest, being the absolute romantic hero in the plot, demonstrates that the human is not essentially reasonable and rational. By his own irrational acts, Gump is awarded with many values in his life, and executes many of his actions without any critical thinking involved. A great example of this idea is shown when Forrest in quietly sitting in his porch and decides to go for a small run. Instead of going on a little run, Forrest resolves that he will keep running for no reason, and that if he could run to the end of the town, then he could run to the end of the county, then run to the ocean, then run across the country. This example demonstrates how Forrest is not the smartest and brightest person, but he has a different feeling for things. Although not always having a logical reason for his actions, if he feels that he has to execute something, he must do it as long as he feels that he has to do it. Forrest actions, in the contrary, instead of putting him in unfortunate situations, it always rewards him with the best of life. • 19. Canada As A Target For Potential International Expansion Introduction Exploring which countries might be a good match for an US based firm who is looking to enter a foreign market, can be a very complex process. Financial resources, competitive products or services, sales and distribution channels as well employee skill levels and talent are all factors which should weigh heavily into choosing the right country for any particular businesses expansion. For purposes of this paper, I will focus on Canadaas a target for potential international expansion, examining several pertinent factors which I believe to be critical to a successful expansion project. Canadian Economy The Canadian banking sector has remained stable, and weathered the global financial crisis with no need for bailouts from the Canada government, and inflation has been modest since 2010. The Canadian economy is technically in a recession, due largely to the slump in oil prices with the energy sector accounting for over 25% of Canada s GDP (Time, 2015). However, other economic indicators reflect very little downturns in consumer spending, and job creation in the country is at a healthy pace. According to an article appearing in the Financial Post, the Canadian economy performed at a better pace in the quarter than the United States (Isfeld, 2015), indicating a robust economy with excellent potential for product expansion. Aircraft Carriers Research Paper Aircraft carriers are essentially the backbone of the United States Navy as they are a hybrid warship with the unique ability to provide the greatest projection of power through the aircraft launched off of their 4.5 acre flight decks. Beyond their vital aircraft launching capabilities, they support the largest number of crew members over any other class of ship making them a powerhouse for almost any mission type designated to them. With the aircraft carrier holding the title of being the flagship and most valued asset of the United States Navy also comes the accompanying hefty price tag of production and running costs. Although the carriers have adequately carried out their missions during their decades of service, constant repairs are signaling the end of their lifespan. Furthermore, significant advancements in technology have necessitated a successor class. The flagship for the new Ford class, the USS Gerald R. Ford, comes with a hefty price tag of $13.5 billion (Hendrix, At What Cost a Carrier? 6). For the price, the Ford class carriers come with an improved aircraft launch system which increases its potential sortie rate to 160 a day, which translates to a 33 percent increase in launch capacity from its predecessor (Hendrix, At What Cost a Carrier? 6). An aircraft carrier is only as effective as its air wing. Therefore the potential sortie number for a carrier versus its cost can accurately be used to determine the effectiveness of the carrier. When comparing the Ford class to the Nimitz class, Hendrix argues that the nation is paying nearly 94 percent more for a carrier that can only do 33 percent more work (At What Cost a Carrier? 6). Although some members of the Navy believe the increase in the output of the new Ford class carriers to be significant enough to justify the increase in cost. Deism and Changes in Religious Tolerance in America Essay Deism and Changes in Religious Tolerance in America Religious conscience in America has evolved considerably since the first settlers emigrated here from Europe. Primary settlements were established by Puritans and Pilgrims who believed their errand into the wilderness [America] was above all else a religious errand, and all institutions town meeting, school, church, family, law must faithfully reflect that fact (Gaustad 61). However, as colonies grew, dissenters emerged to challenge Puritan authority; indeed, many of them left the church to join untraditional religious sects such as the Ranters, the Seekers, the Quakers, the Antinomians, and the Familists (Westbrook 26). This definition leads to the supposition that deistic thought was partly conceived out of scientific discovery: a Darwinian takeover theory. Perhaps the nuances of scientific knowledge manifested a directive in the argument for religious freedom. Certainly, Deist s supported what Benjamin Franklin termed, spiritual Liberty, which asserted that no man ought to resign his Liberty, in mak[ing] Choice of his Minister as his Judgement and Conscience direct him (qtd. in Walters, Franklin 138). Thomas Paine, Deism s most notable advocate, maintains this line of thinking saying, I do not believe in the creed professed by [. . .] any church that I know of, but, I do not mean this declaration to condemn those who believe otherwise; they have the same right to their belief as I have to mine (22). Religious tolerance would gain many formidable voices among America s Founding Fathers, a development that poses a challenge to the harsh dogmatic attitude of early Puritan leaders. • 25. Anton Chekhov s The Cherry Orchard Anton Chekhov s The Cherry Orchard Analysis of Comedic Characters Anton Chekhov s The Cherry Orchard is one of his most famous plays, despite the fact that the comedic aspect is often questioned. The Cherry Orchard records the tale of a wealthy Russian family who are faced with the loss of their estate due to bankruptcy, while also facing the reality of losing their beloved cherry orchard. Titled as a comedy, it seeks to disclose the familyand household dynamics during this brief period. The wealthy family is in so much debt that they are being forced to sell their beloved cherry orchard, a symbol of the affluent past that the family was accustomed to. The Cherry Orcharddoes not appear to be a comedy in our modern day sense of the word, which is the reason that it can be so difficult for the 21st century reader to understand why the play is labeled a comedy and not a tragedy. In Checkhov s work, the characters are one of the most prominent comedic forces driving the play. French philosopher Henri Bergson s once summarized comedic character by saying that, Comedic character is rigid or inflexible in circumstances that demand a resiliency of the mind or body (Fiero). Through the lens of this definition, we conclude that the primary circumstances that demand(s) a resiliency of the mind or body for the characters in The Cherry Orchard are the selling of the cherry orchard and the loss of their class prominence. The Ho, Roberts and Gelman article Essentialism and Racial Bias Jointly Contribute to the Categorizations of Multiracial Individuals examined the joint effects of cognitive biases and social biases on hypodescent. Loosely, hypodescent can be defined as individuals penchant to categorize mixed race individuals into solely the raceof the minority category (Ho et al., 2015). While previous studies have examined the effects of cognitive biases and social motivation on hypodescence respectively, the authors were motivated by the dearth of available studies that examined the effects of cognitive biases and social motivations jointly. Since both cognitive biases and social motivations require higher levels of cognitive processes, it can be inferred that the researchers would endorse a top down view of perception, especially when it comes to racial categorization(Psych 240 Lecture 9/14/15). The researchers hypothesized that subjects who exhibited essentialist thinking the belief that individuals belong to specific discrete groups in which members share inextricable qualities in conjunction with high levels of anti black bias would exhibit hypodescence, by categorizing Black White multiracial individuals into solely a Black racial category. Since essentialism plays an integral role in the article, it is fruitful to examine the concept using different perspectives. They created inhumane boarding schools and oppressing laws that inhibited those of a different culture from being themselves and partook in the urbanization of cultured communities. The following practices need to be stopped and never forgotten so that such ethnocide doesn t happen again. Boarding schools were an issue that plagued both Native Americans and Inupiats. As conveyed by the writings of Mary Crow Dog and other Native American figures, we see how the effects of such schools were devastating to the native population. Boarding schools wiped Natives of their language and culture, teaching young children to be ashamed of what makes them unique. Pupils would return from their long stays at boarding schools, unable to speak to their own family, resulting in an isolation between themselves and their community. Over the years, generations would eventually lose most of what makes them native and, for the most part, their culture slowly faded away. It seems that the Inupiat people faced a similar fate. Inupiat children were forced to learn by Western standards, eventually forgetting their crucial survival skills, language, religion and other unique aspects of their culture. It is about a white journalist who used medication to darken the pigment of his skin to expose the harsh truth about the South and their discriminatory laws against blacks, in his case black men. • 41. Essay on The Fly by Katherine Mansfield The Fly Having read many pieces of literature through short stories, it is evident that each story has its own unique use of symbolism. Diverse characters in each work of literature are used to demonstrate these forms of symbolism. The boss and his inner conflict illustrate a great deal of symbolism in The Flyby Katherine Mansfield. The boss s perception of the actions of the fly creates an interesting view of the comparison of his father son, father fly relationship. Katherine Mansfield, a famous realist, who uses concrete images, appeals to many readers because she incorporates her life into the stories she writes. Much attention is paid to the central character, the boss and his life (Schoenberg). It is interesting... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... He overwhelms his son by taking control of his future and planning out his life. The boss s plan for his son is to take over the business which gives the son no other choices or opportunities concerning his future. Ever since his birth, the boss has worked at building up his business for him; it had no other meaning if it was not for the boy (Mansfield 508). It seems as though the physical action of the boss smothering the fly is associated with the sufferings that his son has experienced. Both the boss s son and the fly go through similar yet different forms of suffering throughout their lives. Interestingly, while the fly is struggling to live, the boss utters, Come on, Look Sharp (Mansfield 509), just as he would say to his suffering son. Both the fly and victims of wartime fighting (his son) are innocently killed by cruel forces over which they have no control (Schoenberg). The antagonist is the character or force that represents the opposition to the protagonist and is the source for conflict. Mr. Woodifield plays the roll of the antagonist in The Fly . He is a former employee of the boss who comes by the office to visit once a week. The two men usually talk, catch up, and enjoy each other s company. Defining Couples Hiv Testing And Counselling 1.Overview Couples HIV Testing and Counselling HIV Testing and Counselling HIV antibody tests were first issued by the World Health Organization in 1992 (WHO, 1997), since then with frequent update of recommendation, and advancement in innovation (Rotheram Borus et al., 2000) HIV testing and counselling continue to be the gateway to HIV prevention, essential treatment and care (Fonner et al., 2012, WHO, 2012b). Knowing one s HIV status used to be considered as a death sentence. However, after having the right treatment peoples view changed into considering the status as a chronic condition (Bedingfield et al., 2014). Thus the development of life saving drugs for HIV/AIDS patients markedly shifted policies to encourage uptake of HIV testing(WHO, 2012b).
