Kierkegaard Double Standard
Kierkegaard expresses that the most dangerous, if not the most respectable of all diseases [ is] to
admire in public what is considered unimportant in private since everything is made into a joke. (9)
This statement brings to light the contrasts between what is dangerous and what is respectable in
Kierkegaard s present age. Within those extremes we face the issues of the collective organism of
people that is the public, the problem with talkativeness, the opposition of reflection and deliberation
along with what it means to risk living with passion or dying without having made any mistakes
throughout your life. This passage deeply reveals Kierkegaard s thoughts on his age, being an age of
reflection and deliberation. In his mind, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
I live in both a reflective and passionate world, in which I want to be a part of something abstract, but
I also want to act in accordance to my passions. The individual man and the reflective man stand on
two opposite sides of the spectrum, and although I agree with Kierkegaard s definitions of both, I
believe that to lead a balanced life, you have to act in ways that speak true to who you are, while
staying mindful of your wellbeing and of the weight of the others around you. I believe in reflection as
a form of introspection, and I believe that it is necessary to reflect on your actions in order to learn
from yourself. The present age is still struggling with all the difficulties of becoming , I find this to be
true, except that I feel we are all in a state of becoming, regardless if we are reflective or individuals,
and that through our decisive actions, or our deliberations, we learn more and more about ourselves
and we continue to become . Living in a reflective age has two meanings for me, one is that there is a
subconscious desire to conform and blend in with the crowd, but there is also a reflection of yourself
to be seen in those surrounding you. In The Present Age, Kierkegaard puts into question the individual
in the face of the public, but I believe that there is a way to be an individual and to find other
individuals within the public who mirror your intentions and passions in life. Because of his relation to

Theme Of Patriotism In King Henry V
Throughout the play Shakespeare explores the theme of patriotism and warfare through the character
of Henry V. King Henry V is the main character in the play. For Shakespeare, Henry V was the perfect
portrait of a warrior and king and his war decisions was the best for England and its people.
Shakespeare shows in the play his highly political admiration for Henry V, who leaps from success to
successes. Henry V has completed the transformation from the young prince into a responsible one. As
the play opens, the Bishop of Canterbury and the Bishop of Ely discuss how much King Henry V has
changed:
Canterbury: The King is full of grace and fair regard.
Ely: And a true lover of the holy church.
Canterbury: The courses of his youth promised it not. The breath no sooner left his father s body, but
that this wildness, mortified in him, seemed to die too. Yea, at the very moment consideration Like an
angel, came, and whipped the offending Adam out of him, leaving his body as a paradise (I, I,22 30)
Henry V became a great leader and outdoes in his duties:
Canterbury: Hear him debate of commonwealth affairs, you would say it hath been all in all his study.
The list he discourages of war, and you shall hear a fearful battle rendered you in music. Turn him to
any cause of policy, the Gordian knot of it he will unloose. (I,i,38 52).
Although Henry V is charismatic, knowledge and professional, Henry V has become merciless that
when he confronts his old friends and they confess

Effects Of Alcohol Abuse And Alcoholism
When entering the field of social work, a person should understand the effects of alcohol, not only on
an individual, but also the effects on the families. Alcohol is one of the many substances that people
use and abuse. Since alcohol is legal for any one over the age of twenty one, many people begin
drinking and then develop an addiction to the substance (Goldberg, 2016). Alcoholism effects people
of all ages, background, social status, or ethnic group (National Institute on Drug Abuse, 2016). A
social worker should understand how to assess and intervene families who are struggling with alcohol
addiction in a way that is both ethical and culturally competent (National Institute on Alcohol Abuse
and Alcoholism, 2005). The main goal for a social worker is to promote well being and help provide
the basic needs of all people (National Association of Social Workers, 2008). To begin, a social worker
must first assess the situation that is before them and collect as much information as possible. Several
questions need to be asked to either the family or the person who has alcoholism. For example, on
average, how many days a week does the person consume alcohol? On those days, how many
alcoholic beverages are consumed? In the last thirty days how many times have you had more than
four alcoholic beverages? These questions need to be asked first because a social worker needs to
know how severe the problem is (National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism, 2005). In some

Why We Need Heros A hero, a person noted for courageous acts or nobility of character ( Hero ). A
hero shows much more than honor and glory, they sacrifice their own life to selflessly help out the
lives of others. By having heroes it gives us hope, wisdom, and justice throughout the nation. The
three main types of heroes include an epic hero, superhero, and your own personal hero. These heroes
show that it s more than the cape or armour they wear, they show the true meaning of a hero by
defining sacrifice, loyalty, and determination. Throughout the epic poem Beowulf, Beowulf displays
the characteristics of an epic hero because he shows courage and loyalty to those around him by ...

As told within the movie, Peter Parker s grandmother believes there s a hero in all of us; gives us
strength, makes us noble, even though some items we have to give up the things we love the most
(Sami Raimi). Neither Spiderman nor his alter ego, Peter Parker, ever showed any signs of
fear(Spiderman). His incredible bravery allowed for him to fight relentlessly. As we grow up
throughout life, we hold onto many heroes as they have impacted our life. Looking into my personal
life, my hero consists of my mother, Darla Linden. She defined a hero as a person stepping up in a
situation without thinking they also are in harm s way (Linden, Darla). Throughout my lifetime my
mom has been there for me since day one and has helped nurtured me.. She sacrifices many things for
myself and for my family by providing us with our daily needs. I can always count on her to point me
in the right direction by pursuing my dreams and wishes. I admire her caring heart and faithfulness the
most because she would drop anything instantly to help someone else in need. She supports me in all
of my extra curricular activities and motivates myself to bring out my full potential. I get inspired by
her courageous character by never backing down to a challenge and always finishing through. When I
asked my mom who she picked as her hero she said, the service men and women of all branches who
fight for our country (Linden, Darla). They provide us with safety by sacrificing

Reasons for the failure of 1848- 1849 revolutions in...
The revolutionaries in Italy had longstanding grievances, some were nationalists and some were
liberals. Despite all having different ideas and aims they all resoundingly agreed that Italy needed
change. The hopes of the various revolutionary groups had been raised by the election of Pope Pius
and Charles Albert the King of Piedmont Sardinia. However, their hopes and resulting revolutions
were crushed due to many concerning factors. A crushing factor of the failure of the revolutions was
the trouncing of the Piedmontese army at both the battles of Novara and Custoza. These defeats were
resounding as the Piedmontese army had no chance against the might of the super power that was the
Austrian army. The Piedmontese army met the forces of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Radetsky s army was not just huge but well led, organised and well equipped. Under such
authoritative and commanding leadership the Piedmontese army was soon defeated. Radetsky s army
in addition also crushed the revolts in Venice and Tuscany (who had declared themselves as republics)
and who had previously resisted Austrian siege warfare until February 1849. However, it was not just
the power of Austria and it s army which contributed to the failures of the revolutions, but the
revolutionaries also contributed to their own downfall. Despite wanting change in Italy, there were
numerous divisions between the revolutionaries such as the liberals and nationalists having different
aims and incompetence in the face of Austria. Such divisions not only affected morale but had
physical impacts such as in the battle of Custoza where the Papal States and Naples withdrew their
troops in favour of their own interests. Furthermore, the divisions between the revolutionaries were
accentuated when the Roman Republic was declared in favour of the Pope being the leader of the
Papal States. The previous Pope, Pius IX had fled to Naples after not being able to declare war on a
fellow Catholic state and continued to work with a constitutional government until his flight from
Rome. The republic was led by Mazzini who took care of all political issues and provided inspiration
whilst Garibaldi was in charge of

Sex Between Children s Toys Of Non Human Primates (...
Sex differences in response to children s toys in non human primates (cereopithecus aethiops sabaeus)
The study of sex difference in toys boys and girls tend to play wit, has always been classified as
gender socialization. According to researchers such as, Connor and Serbin, 1977; Liss, 1981, the
explained that boys favour construction and transportation toys, while girls favour doll. Research also
shows that boys do tend to be more active (Campbell and Eaton, 1999; Eaton and Enns, 1986) and
show more physical play than girls (Dipietro, 1981). These sexual characteristics of play style is said
to have derived from learning and cognitive mechanisms in association with gender socialization.
Bandura, 1977; Fagot and Hagan, 1991; Langlois and Downs, 1990 state that sex differences in play
actions and toys preference arise from modelling and reinforcement of sex typical paly, based on
learning theory. Cognitive theories connote that as children grow, they tend to develop awareness of
their gender identity, which results in a mental representation of what gender is defined as socially,
appropriate behaviour and show a positive understanding of toys and activities associated with their
individual gender (Maccoby, 1988; Martin, 1999, Martin, Wood, and Little, 1990).
Biological factors can also influence sex difference in paly behaviour. In a research test conducted on
both female rats and rhesus monkeys, treated with androgen during periods of pre or natal

Always the Lowest Price at Wal-Mart Essay
Always the Lowest Price at Wal Mart
Over the past 20 years, the nature of the American retailing market has changed dramatically, going
from Mom and Pop s boutiques to mega retail stores like Wal Mart. Especially in the last decade, Sam
Walton s discount stores have proliferated in almost every city across the United States and Canada.
But the opinions about the effects of Wal Mart in small towns divide the rural population in two
groups. Through economic, cultural and social arguments, the anti Wal Mart activists and the
advocates defend their point of view about the expansion of the store in small communities.

The tranquil and friendly way of life in small communities is threatened by the urban one stop
shopping culture of the giant. The population in regions does not want a store where the atmosphere is
cold and artificial. In essence, the anti Wal Mart activists want to stop the store from establishing itself
in rural communities because they believe that it would destroy their economic and cultural identity.
On the opposite side, the population in favour of Wal Mart thinks that the creation of new stores in
rural regions stimulates the economy and that the local businesses are responsible for the problems
faced on Main Street because they are not adapted to the modern retailing market. First of all, the
opening of a mega discount store in a region attracts people from other small towns. This affluence of
customers is beneficial to the local businesses that sell complementary products near the Wal Mart.
The advocates of the store also affirm that the company creates jobs. But if local merchants want to
benefit from Wal Mart, they have to evolve with the market and change their way of doing things. As
said by Jo Ann Johnston, adaptation is the key element: ``People are beginning to realize that small
town merchants need to adapt to changes in their communities, the economy, and their industries
instead of chastising an outside company`` (1995, p.222). The

My Wishes In My Life
Every week would be something new: good or bad. As I was growing up at the end of the week my
grandparents, whom I had lived with, would make my sister, brother, and me milkshakes and we
would sit outside, look at stars, and talk about how our past week went. When it was occurring I had
just thought of the delicious milkshake that I would enjoy and the wishes I would make, but I had
recently realized that is what laid the foundation of who I am today.
Typically we would always make the milkshake first, with our choice of our favorite ice cream. Then
we would sit outside and look for shooting stars. When we found a shooting star we would make a
wish. My grandma always asked us about what we had wished for, without giving our exact wish we
would elaborate on what it was about. For my wishes, it would always be about my dad or my mom.
At the time my dad was in prison and before he had gone away he was the adult I was closest to. It
was always hard for me to talk about these wishes. I still have the memories of my dad first being sent
to jail and talking to him through a glass window; also taking a trip to the prison, where I learned that
you are not allowed to wear jeans with buttons while visiting someone, these in which I will forever
have engraved into my mind. On the other hand, we did not live with my mom because she was
working in order to provide a better life for us, her children.
No matter how hard the topic would be my grandma always tried to make it better. She

Dr. Heidegger s Experiment
Hawthorne creates a delightfully dreary Gothic short story ¨Dr. Heidegger s Experiment¨ through the
use of a dilapidated family estate, heightened emotions from the characters Mr. Medbourne, Colonel
Killigrew, and Mr. Gascoigne, as well as unexplained objects such as the painting of Dr Heidegger s
lost love coming to life.
Hawthorne s short story is set in Heidegger s study, a room that was once magnificent, but when this
story occurs it has cobwebs and layer of dust covering the room. Gothic short stories regularly are set

Character Analysis Of The Novel The Shipping News
Among all the characters of the novel The Shipping News, Quoyle endures the most powerful change
and provides the one of a kind strength that drives the story onward. He is the insecure protagonist of
the tale, whose self esteem is the feature that limits him the most. In the progress of his transition as a
character he not only spares himself, but his troubled family line as well. Quoyle s solitude and agony
in the beginning of the book almost extends throughout the whole story where we see him beat
himself to the ground with the hard put downs and mistreatment from others. A Flemish flake is a
spiral coil of one layer only. It is made on deck, so that it may be walked on if necessary. (Proulx 1)
This first quote of the story gives a brilliant narrative of the boneless person Quoyle is. Quoyle is a
powerful character who is unconfident, quiet, and an unloved person, who has been taught his whole
life that he is nothing short of a failure.
Quoyle is a man of few friends, and precedes a solitary and detached life in Mockingburg, New York.
Quoyle is chracterized by the author as a man who abstracted his life from the time (Proulx 11) He
falls in love, or so he thinks, to an unlikely equal called Petal, whom he ends up having an unfortunate
marriage with. She was with Quoyle out of pleasure and to use him for financial support. She cheated
on him repeatedly, and possessed no love for their two daughters, she sold them before running off
with a boyfriend and getting herself butchered in a car wreck in the process. In the author s vocabulary
of describing their unrighteous relationship, What he had was what he pretended (Proulx 14) Quoyle
is ruined notwithstanding the circumstance that she treated him like dirt and had no respect for him.
His whole world is astray after losing his terrible spouse and the recent deaths of his unloving parents
who anticipated him to arrange their funeral. Before he went, Quoyle s father went as far as to recite to
him how much of a disappointment he was. It is safe to say Quoyle was on his lowest of lows, that is
until his unpronounced Aunt Agnis Hamm reveals herself from out of the blue to take him to their
family s spot of origin, Killick Claw Newfoundland. It makes sense ,

Currently, there are two major of database management systems which are used to deal with data, the
first one called Relational Database Management System (RDBMS) which is the traditional relational

second one called Not only Structure Query Language databases (NoSQL), they have been dealing
with semi structured and unstructured data; the NoSQL term was introduced for the first time in 1998
by Carlo Strozzi and Eric Evans reintroduced the term NoSQL in early 2009, and now the NoSQL
types are gaining their popularity with the development of the internet and the social media. NoSQL

Technology and Cars in the Future
I imagine the world will have more changes especially in the field of technology. The technology will
change our life enormously. The latest technology that exist today such as bendable smart phone
amazes me. This bendable and flexible smart phone was developed by Samsung. In addition, the
existence of 3D printing, enables users print 3D shapes from 3D pictures. What will happen 50 years
from now is a huge transformation with more new inventions, innovations and designs. Future car
technologies will be beyond our imagination. Transparent instrument panel of future cars that use

Vegetable based components. The body panel of the car will be based on vegetable, meaning having

Aeneid Women
Women of The Aeneid
The Aeneid a beautifully epic poem written by Virgil. This epic tale consists of a Trojan warrior
Aeneas go through trials and tribulations of fate. Though many of his problems consist of women who
have loved and loathed him in his life. These women nonetheless have made his founding of Rome
come true. Every woman in this story has contributed to Aeneas s destiny and character.
Minerva is first shown in the second book of The Aeneid. Aeneas is going back to the war and is
describing what lead them to bring in the horse. He recounts of a Trojan boy named Sinon. Sinon goes
on to say that the hose is a gift for the goddess Minerva. That she has turned her backs on the Greeks
because of Ulysses destruction of a temple. Now this horse will appease Minerva and bring them
victory among the war with Greece. A priestess not believing the man decides to try to puncture it with
a spear. From this action Laocoon and his two sons are soon eaten by two serpents that have come
from the ocean. The serpents then slither to the Minerva shrine. Thus, giving the trojans enough
evidence to bring in the horse. By Bringing Minerva into the lie of the gift, they ultimately started the
destruction of Troy. Minerva influenced these men to accept this gift and ultimately brings Troy s
down fall and brings Aeneas to flee with his family. This woman influenced the beginning of Aeneas s

Population Control
Every day, over three hundred million babies are born around the world. Abortion lowers the
population number a minute amount, but according to the Center for Disease Control (CDC), only
about 1 in every five parents abort, resulting in a population increase of four live births. Without
control, the human population growth will not stop. Companies will try to meet the demand for more
consumer goods, causing the development of more factories. Deforestation, or the clearing of forests,
will occur to build the factories. The increase in factories will result in higher carbon dioxide levels
emitted into the atmosphere. Humans are unquestionably the most advanced species. They are also,
unfortunately, the most destructive. Humans are causing a surprising amount of damage to Earth
because of one thing, overpopulation.
Machines clear trees from land to accommodate the demand for housing and commercial buildings,
which in turn causes the release of carbon dioxide through gas emissions. Also, tropical forests contain
more than two hundred ten gigatons of carbon dioxide which are released into the atmosphere when
they are cut down which then increases the amount of greenhouse gases. Tropical trees alone are
responsible for releasing more than 15 percent of greenhouse gas emissions. In the Eastern
Hemisphere, there are high greenhouse gas emissions due to the clearing, draining and conversion of
many forests into pulp plantations. The absence of trees causes an increased amount of

Prokaryotes Vs Eukaryotes Essay
In the replication process of DNA, there are similarities between the process of replication of a
Eukaryote cell and Prokaryote cell. There are also differences in both processes. The most notable
difference would have to start with the cell themselves, which may add to additional differences in the
processes. A prokaryote is a more simplistic cell with less DNA and a Eukaryote cell is much more
complex with vast amounts of DNA.
The replication process in the end has the same goal and that is to copy DNA and pass it along to a
new cell. The processes begin in a similar fashion, which is the DNA is unwound by an enzyme
known as DNA helicase (Boundless, 2016). Prokaryotes and Eukaryotes both employ the polymerases
to synthesis DNA. In both cases the replication begins within the cell wall or cell membrane. The
processes of replicating the DNA into a new cell occurs with the aid of leading strands and lagging
strands (Bank, E., 2016). A leading and lagging strand uses RNA prime that inserts the first genetic
code that is completed by a subsequent lagging strand, Okazaki fragment.
The differences between the two replications are abundant. Although the replication occurs within the
cell wall for the two processes they both occur in different locations. The prokaryote replication
occurs in cytoplasm. It also is destined to occur in that one location ... Show more content on

The speed at which replication occurs is speedy but the decrease in speed for Eukaryote cells may go
hand and hand with the complexity of the organism. The margin for error to complete multiple
processes with billions of lines of DNA would presumably be higher with increased speed. It may also
be true that having multiple points of origin could be more accurate at inserting code in the correct
position. Lastly, the end of a chromosome and the shortening of the chromosome may help to relieve
the world of people who have experienced everything and know

African Americans Food
Africans found food in many ways. They hunted, fished, gathered, scavenged, herded, and farmed.
The types of foods early Africans consumed tended to vary by climate and area.
Early people were hunter gatherers. They ate large and small birds, fish, mice, grasshoppers, crabs,
snails, mollusks, fruit, nuts, wild cereals, vegetables, fungi, and other plants.
In the case of agriculture, the type of area and amount of rain determined the kinds of crops that grew
best.
People harvested forest snail. Bananas, fish, sheep, goats, chickens, cattle, yams, millet, sorghum, and
insect larvae were popular meal choices in the sub Saharan area.

Ethos Pathos In Pepsi
Advertisements are everywhere; while driving you may see them on a billboard, while watching tv,
looking through your phone, and even while watching your favorite youtuber. Advertisements have
been around so long that the techniques behind them are down to a science. Advertisements have been
around for so long that they are as apart of our culture as much as television or music. Many times,
advertisements will use certain strategies in order to sell their product. The most common being
Aristotle s three modes of persuasion ethos, logos, and pathos. Ethos is an appeal to someone s ethics,
their character, it is used to convince the audience of the author s credibility. The third appeal, pathos,
is an appeal to the audiences emotion. These strategies have been proven to work very well, so what if
an advertisement implemented many of these strategies and still received backlash or wasn t well
received. Well, Pepsi found themselves in that position with their advertisement featuring Kendall
Jenner. The advertisement used appeals to pathos, ethos, and even implemented many parts of North
American culture, so why did it receive so much backlash? By analyzing pathos, and ethos, I will
determine why it received much backlash despite having everything a commercial should.
The advertisement begins with a Pepsi can being opened with the song Lions by Skip Marley playing
in the background. The camera then cuts to a man on the roof playing a violin. The camera then cuts to

Essay about Progressivism
Progressivism implies a philosophy which welcomes innovations and reforms in the political,
economic, and social order. The Progressive movement, 1901 to 1917, was ultimately the triumph of
conservatism rather than a victory for liberalism. In a general sense, the conservative goals of this
period justified the Liberal reforms enacted by
Progressive leaders. Deviating from the traditional definition of conservatism (a resistance to change
and a disposition of hostility to innovations in the political, social, and economic order), the
Conservatist triumph was in the sense that there was an effort to maintain basic social and economic
relations vital to a capitalist society. The
Progressive leaders essentially wanted to perpetuate ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In 1902, the United Mine Workers were willing to submit to arbitration, but the coal operators
adamantly opposed any recognition of the union. Thus, the union members decided to strike over
wages, safety conditions, and union recognition. The Anthracite Coal Strike of 1902 ended with the
appointment by Roosevelt of an arbitration commission to rule on the issues. Business men did not
regard politics (government regulation) as a necessary evil, but as an important part of their position in
society. Roosevelt did not see big business as evil, but a permanent development that was necessary in
a modern economy. Roosevelt couldn t rely on the courts to distinguish between good or bad trusts.
The only solution was for the executive to assume that responsibility.
Roosevelt s ingenious square dealings and gentlemen s agreements controlled many firms. In 1903, a
new cabinet position was created to address the concerns of business and labor (Department of
Commerce and Labor).
Within the department, the Bureau of Corporations was empowered to investigate and report on illegal
activities of corporations. The abuse of economic power by railroads proposed another problem for
Roosevelt. However, in 1903, the Elkins Act empowered the ICC (Interstate Commerce Commission,
first American federal regulatory agency) to act against

Propaganda Techniques Today s Advertising By Anne Mcclintock
In the essay, Propaganda Techniques in Today s Advertising by Anne McClintock, McClintock shows
seven different ways that propaganda is used. One mostly used by advertisement today would be
Glittering Generalities, using positive words to bring attraction to their product while concealing the
actual meanings. They will use inspiring words that are very vague that the consumer would not really
understand what the product would really do to benefit them but would be inspired to buy it anyways.
Another technique mostly used would be Testimonial, were producers would pay celebrities to
advertise their product for them since they have more fame than normal actors. Advertisement used
today is targeted to make the consumer believe that what they are paying for is the real deal when it is
only beneficial for the producers. Advertisements are used to promote a product by the positive effects
enthusiastically but when describing the side effects they are done fast and in small letters. When one
watches a commercial in the television, or hears it on the radio, one mostly hears the what the
producers wants them to hear. They will explain their product, giving the pros of what it was made to
do and how its a better option than other products in the market. When they are done with their sale at
the very end most of commercials give you in small font the rest of the financial information,
additional fees, or even side effects with a very fast voice most of the time reading it to you.

Harry S Truman Research Paper
If you ask a person on the streets about Harry S. Truman, they would probably talk about him
dropping an atomic bomb on Hiroshima, Japan. Maybe they would talk about how he advanced the
cause of African American civil rights. Either way, Harry S. Truman is considered one of our nation s
best presidents even though he was criticized years after his presidency.
Harry S. Truman was born on May 8th, 1884. He grew up in Independence, Missouri, only ten miles
east of Kansas City. He was born with poor sight, and was often picked on at school for being
different. In 1901, Truman graduated from high school and tried to attend West Point for college but
couldn t because of financial problems. Instead, he worked in a mailroom of the Kansas City Star. ...

You could catch him relaxing at home, getting a couple of drinks with his friends, and at his library
giving speeches or helping students write a paper on him. He told one young history professor that he
had better go home and read his books before trying to interview him again.
Harry S. Truman died on December 26, 1972 of old age. His wife, Bess, had him buried in the
courtyard of his library. Bess followed him in death ten years later. Truman s legacy is quite amazing.
During his presidency, he was not a fan favorite of people in the U.S. But now researchers rank him as
one of the best presidents the United States has ever had.
His stature didn t start to rise until students and researchers started studying what he did during his
presidency. They realized that he did what was best for the United States and started to respect him.
He left his mark on domestic and foreign affairs. He helped the United States after post war and tried
to make minimum wage higher. He also helped put the United States as prime minister of NATO,
which we still are today. Truman s known for one of the best political comebacks ever in U.S

Kierkegaard Double Standard Kierkegaard expresses that the most dangerous, if not the most respectable of all diseases [ is] to admire in public what is considered unimportant in private since everything is made into a joke. (9) This statement brings to light the contrasts between what is dangerous and what is respectable in Kierkegaard s present age. Within those extremes we face the issues of the collective organism of people that is the public, the problem with talkativeness, the opposition of reflection and deliberation along with what it means to risk living with passion or dying without having made any mistakes throughout your life. This passage deeply reveals Kierkegaard s thoughts on his age, being an age of reflection and deliberation. In his mind, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... I live in both a reflective and passionate world, in which I want to be a part of something abstract, but I also want to act in accordance to my passions. The individual man and the reflective man stand on two opposite sides of the spectrum, and although I agree with Kierkegaard s definitions of both, I believe that to lead a balanced life, you have to act in ways that speak true to who you are, while staying mindful of your wellbeing and of the weight of the others around you. I believe in reflection as a form of introspection, and I believe that it is necessary to reflect on your actions in order to learn from yourself. The present age is still struggling with all the difficulties of becoming , I find this to be true, except that I feel we are all in a state of becoming, regardless if we are reflective or individuals, and that through our decisive actions, or our deliberations, we learn more and more about ourselves and we continue to become . Living in a reflective age has two meanings for me, one is that there is a subconscious desire to conform and blend in with the crowd, but there is also a reflection of yourself to be seen in those surrounding you. In The Present Age, Kierkegaard puts into question the individual in the face of the public, but I believe that there is a way to be an individual and to find other individuals within the public who mirror your intentions and passions in life. Ely: And a true lover of the holy church. Canterbury: The courses of his youth promised it not. The breath no sooner left his father s body, but that this wildness, mortified in him, seemed to die too. Yea, at the very moment consideration Like an angel, came, and whipped the offending Adam out of him, leaving his body as a paradise (I, I,22 30) Henry V became a great leader and outdoes in his duties: Canterbury: Hear him debate of commonwealth affairs, you would say it hath been all in all his study. • 4. Effects Of Alcohol Abuse And Alcoholism When entering the field of social work, a person should understand the effects of alcohol, not only on an individual, but also the effects on the families. Alcohol is one of the many substances that people use and abuse. Since alcohol is legal for any one over the age of twenty one, many people begin drinking and then develop an addiction to the substance (Goldberg, 2016). Alcoholism effects people of all ages, background, social status, or ethnic group (National Institute on Drug Abuse, 2016). A social worker should understand how to assess and intervene families who are struggling with alcohol addiction in a way that is both ethical and culturally competent (National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism, 2005). The main goal for a social worker is to promote well being and help provide the basic needs of all people (National Association of Social Workers, 2008). To begin, a social worker must first assess the situation that is before them and collect as much information as possible. Several questions need to be asked to either the family or the person who has alcoholism. For example, on average, how many days a week does the person consume alcohol? On those days, how many alcoholic beverages are consumed? In the last thirty days how many times have you had more than four alcoholic beverages? These questions need to be asked first because a social worker needs to know how severe the problem is (National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism, 2005). In some cases ... Despite all having different ideas and aims they all resoundingly agreed that Italy needed change. The hopes of the various revolutionary groups had been raised by the election of Pope Pius and Charles Albert the King of Piedmont Sardinia. However, their hopes and resulting revolutions were crushed due to many concerning factors. A crushing factor of the failure of the revolutions was the trouncing of the Piedmontese army at both the battles of Novara and Custoza. However, it was not just the power of Austria and it s army which contributed to the failures of the revolutions, but the revolutionaries also contributed to their own downfall. Despite wanting change in Italy, there were numerous divisions between the revolutionaries such as the liberals and nationalists having different aims and incompetence in the face of Austria. Such divisions not only affected morale but had physical impacts such as in the battle of Custoza where the Papal States and Naples withdrew their troops in favour of their own interests. Furthermore, the divisions between the revolutionaries were accentuated when the Roman Republic was declared in favour of the Pope being the leader of the Papal States. The tranquil and friendly way of life in small communities is threatened by the urban one stop shopping culture of the giant. The population in regions does not want a store where the atmosphere is cold and artificial. In essence, the anti Wal Mart activists want to stop the store from establishing itself in rural communities because they believe that it would destroy their economic and cultural identity. On the opposite side, the population in favour of Wal Mart thinks that the creation of new stores in rural regions stimulates the economy and that the local businesses are responsible for the problems faced on Main Street because they are not adapted to the modern retailing market. First of all, the opening of a mega discount store in a region attracts people from other small towns. This affluence of customers is beneficial to the local businesses that sell complementary products near the Wal Mart. The advocates of the store also affirm that the company creates jobs. But if local merchants want to benefit from Wal Mart, they have to evolve with the market and change their way of doing things. Character Analysis Of The Novel The Shipping News Among all the characters of the novel The Shipping News, Quoyle endures the most powerful change and provides the one of a kind strength that drives the story onward. He is the insecure protagonist of the tale, whose self esteem is the feature that limits him the most. In the progress of his transition as a character he not only spares himself, but his troubled family line as well. Quoyle s solitude and agony in the beginning of the book almost extends throughout the whole story where we see him beat himself to the ground with the hard put downs and mistreatment from others. A Flemish flake is a spiral coil of one layer only. It is made on deck, so that it may be walked on if necessary. (Proulx 1) This first quote of the story gives a brilliant narrative of the boneless person Quoyle is. Quoyle is a powerful character who is unconfident, quiet, and an unloved person, who has been taught his whole life that he is nothing short of a failure. Quoyle is a man of few friends, and precedes a solitary and detached life in Mockingburg, New York. Quoyle is chracterized by the author as a man who abstracted his life from the time (Proulx 11) He falls in love, or so he thinks, to an unlikely equal called Petal, whom he ends up having an unfortunate marriage with. She was with Quoyle out of pleasure and to use him for financial support. She cheated on him repeatedly, and possessed no love for their two daughters, she sold them before running off with a boyfriend and getting herself butchered in a car wreck in the process. In the author s vocabulary of describing their unrighteous relationship, What he had was what he pretended (Proulx 14) Quoyle is ruined notwithstanding the circumstance that she treated him like dirt and had no respect for him. His whole world is astray after losing his terrible spouse and the recent deaths of his unloving parents who anticipated him to arrange their funeral. Before he went, Quoyle s father went as far as to recite to him how much of a disappointment he was. • 24. Prokaryotes Vs Eukaryotes Essay In the replication process of DNA, there are similarities between the process of replication of a Eukaryote cell and Prokaryote cell. There are also differences in both processes. The most notable difference would have to start with the cell themselves, which may add to additional differences in the processes. A prokaryote is a more simplistic cell with less DNA and a Eukaryote cell is much more complex with vast amounts of DNA. The replication process in the end has the same goal and that is to copy DNA and pass it along to a new cell. The processes begin in a similar fashion, which is the DNA is unwound by an enzyme known as DNA helicase (Boundless, 2016). Prokaryotes and Eukaryotes both employ the polymerases to synthesis DNA. In both cases the replication begins within the cell wall or cell membrane. The processes of replicating the DNA into a new cell occurs with the aid of leading strands and lagging strands (Bank, E., 2016). A leading and lagging strand uses RNA prime that inserts the first genetic code that is completed by a subsequent lagging strand, Okazaki fragment. The differences between the two replications are abundant. Although the replication occurs within the cell wall for the two processes they both occur in different locations. Ethos Pathos In Pepsi Advertisements are everywhere; while driving you may see them on a billboard, while watching tv, looking through your phone, and even while watching your favorite youtuber. Advertisements have been around so long that the techniques behind them are down to a science. Advertisements have been around for so long that they are as apart of our culture as much as television or music. Many times, advertisements will use certain strategies in order to sell their product. The most common being Aristotle s three modes of persuasion ethos, logos, and pathos. Ethos is an appeal to someone s ethics, their character, it is used to convince the audience of the author s credibility. The third appeal, pathos, is an appeal to the audiences emotion. These strategies have been proven to work very well, so what if an advertisement implemented many of these strategies and still received backlash or wasn t well received. Well, Pepsi found themselves in that position with their advertisement featuring Kendall Jenner. The advertisement used appeals to pathos, ethos, and even implemented many parts of North American culture, so why did it receive so much backlash? By analyzing pathos, and ethos, I will determine why it received much backlash despite having everything a commercial should. • 29. Essay about Progressivism Progressivism implies a philosophy which welcomes innovations and reforms in the political, economic, and social order. The Progressive movement, 1901 to 1917, was ultimately the triumph of conservatism rather than a victory for liberalism. In a general sense, the conservative goals of this period justified the Liberal reforms enacted by Progressive leaders. Deviating from the traditional definition of conservatism (a resistance to change and a disposition of hostility to innovations in the political, social, and economic order), the Conservatist triumph was in the sense that there was an effort to maintain basic social and economic relations vital to a capitalist society. The Progressive leaders essentially wanted to perpetuate ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In 1902, the United Mine Workers were willing to submit to arbitration, but the coal operators adamantly opposed any recognition of the union. Thus, the union members decided to strike over wages, safety conditions, and union recognition. The Anthracite Coal Strike of 1902 ended with the appointment by Roosevelt of an arbitration commission to rule on the issues. Business men did not regard politics (government regulation) as a necessary evil, but as an important part of their position in society. Roosevelt did not see big business as evil, but a permanent development that was necessary in a modern economy. Roosevelt couldn t rely on the courts to distinguish between good or bad trusts. The only solution was for the executive to assume that responsibility. Roosevelt s ingenious square dealings and gentlemen s agreements controlled many firms. In 1903, a new cabinet position was created to address the concerns of business and labor (Department of Commerce and Labor). Within the department, the Bureau of Corporations was empowered to investigate and report on illegal activities of corporations. The abuse of economic power by railroads proposed another problem for Roosevelt. • 30. Propaganda Techniques Today s Advertising By Anne Mcclintock In the essay, Propaganda Techniques in Today s Advertising by Anne McClintock, McClintock shows seven different ways that propaganda is used. One mostly used by advertisement today would be Glittering Generalities, using positive words to bring attraction to their product while concealing the actual meanings. They will use inspiring words that are very vague that the consumer would not really understand what the product would really do to benefit them but would be inspired to buy it anyways. Another technique mostly used would be Testimonial, were producers would pay celebrities to advertise their product for them since they have more fame than normal actors. Advertisement used today is targeted to make the consumer believe that what they are paying for is the real deal when it is only beneficial for the producers. Advertisements are used to promote a product by the positive effects enthusiastically but when describing the side effects they are done fast and in small letters. When one watches a commercial in the television, or hears it on the radio, one mostly hears the what the producers wants them to hear. They will explain their product, giving the pros of what it was made to do and how its a better option than other products in the market. When they are done with their sale at the very end most of commercials give you in small font the rest of the financial information, additional fees, or even side effects with a very fast voice most of the time reading it to you. ...
