Connie s Sexuality In Joyce Carol Oates Smooth Talk
Smooth Talk is a drama movie based on the short story, Where are you going, where have you been
written by Joyce Carol Oates in 1966. The story was inspired in some way by the true history of
Tucson murders that was committed by Charles Schmid. Connie represented a young girl that is 15
years old at that period and it is eager to explore her sexuality. In the other hand, she feels that she is
not understood by her family. Therefore, she rebels against her family adopting a risky behavior that
concluded with her rape. Connie behavior is at some point responsible for her misfortune. As well her
family environment contributes to her misconduct. Not less important is the fact of her affair with an
older man, who rape and murder her.(Camby, 1) Oates make an extraordinary work portraying an
image of the girls that cannot wait to be a woman. While Connie is running as fast as she can,
immersing herself in the adult life of young woman who is awakening her sexuality, she seduces
herself into the wrong path. As a result, she unconsciously throwing away her innocence. Connie was
a girl that want to get the attention of everyone, especially of the boys, because she at some point feels

First, when they get to the mall they change their normal clothes, for other that are more sensual and
provocative. Connie behavior is indeed a clear declaration that she desperately craving for a sexual
relationship. Connie used lipstick and intentionally pull down her blouse to expose her figure, to
seduce the boys. She is taller than her friends Laura and Jill and she is even more beautiful than her
friends. Likewise, her figure is similar to a siren and she is also sophisticated and charismatic. Connie
mind is full of zany fantasies and dreams. Thus, her mother said to Connie, I look into your eyes all I
see is are trashy dreams (Oates,

How Does Don Giovanni Contribute To The Enlightenment
Don Giovanni is a one of a kind character, yet so predictable living a certain lifestyle, almost to the
point of being mysterious. It is the enlightenment era however, where a lot of impossibilities were
being explored, and presented to the public in different forms, including this opera, Don Giovanni.
Although Don Giovanni seems like a total embodiment of immorality, he nevertheless carries some
admirable principles, sparkling the enlightenment idea through the story of Don Giovanni.
As we all know, the Enlightenment is known as the era of reasoning. Many had started to realize the
power of rational and logical thinking. Don Giovanni is a great example for this type of thinking.
Although more probably accuse him rather than praise him of seducing so many women, Giovanni has
his own reasoning to it. (How can it be fair if I just marry one woman) ? This is in fact capable of
bearing careful thoughts. It would not be fair for Giovanni to stay with one single woman, for thus not
only would it be unfair to all the other women, but Giovanni would ... Show more content on

In Lord Byron s Don Juan, Pleasure s a sin, and sometimes sin s a pleasure (Canto the first). It was not
uncommon to consider pleasure as something sinful, but to think the reverse such that sin brings
pleasure is a brand new idea. Just as the Don Giovanni in Mozart s work, the main characters pursue
in their own favor the goal of their lives. Few mortals know what end they would be at, tut whether
glory, power, or love, or treasure, the path is through perplexing ways, and when the goal is gain d, we
die... (Canto the first) In such a shirt a life that one lives, Don Giovanni and Don Juan both seize the
meaning of their lives and bravely pursue their love. This level of liberty cannot be ignored from the

The Peninsular Oriental Steam Navigation Company
General Information
In 1822, the very first cruise line, known as the Peninsular Oriental Steam Navigation Company, was
founded by Brodie McGhie Willcox and Arthur Anderson, both experienced in the shipping industry.
Its first ship was the 206 ton paddle steamer called the William Fawcett, which was first deployed in
1835 from London to Spain and Portugal. More recently, in the 1960 s and early 1970 s, three of the
world s largest cruise lines were established. The first one, Norwegian Cruise Line, was introduced
when airline travel was becoming increasingly popular. The cruise industry declined significantly
from this competition. The second cruise line, Royal Caribbean International, was also experiencing
the same challenges as ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This ship has 2,706 staterooms and a maximum capacity of 6,296 passengers. In addition to Allure of
the Seas, Royal Caribbean also owns the second largest cruise ship, Oasis of the Seas. In fact, Royal
Caribbean owns 7 of the 10 largest cruise ships in the world. Its newest cruise ship, Anthem of the
Seas, has the most innovative technology onboard such as skydiving and a 360° view of the ocean.
Has the cruise industry evolved over the past years?
The cruise industry has definitely evolved over the years to meet the changing demands and
expectations of its passengers. The most important changes in the industry over the years are the
introduction of shore excursions, new cruise routes and changes in the ships themselves. The first
cruise ships offered few to no excursions while all the modern cruise lines offer over 100 excursions
per cruise. These excursions can include participating in an actual boat race in Philipsburg, climbing
waterfalls in Ocho Rios and scuba diving which is always very popular among passengers. They are
designed to give the passengers a new and thrilling experience that they cannot attain at home. In the
old days, the only cruise routes available were transatlantic and small European routes. The
transatlantic route became unpopular in the 1960 s as air travel shortened travelling time from less
than 20 hours by air versus four days by cruise. However, with the launch of newer,

Biomedical Engineering Personal Statement
Homo sapiens are known to be the most advanced creatures on Earth, the number of humans in the
world is exponentially increasing to nearly over seven billion as 250 babies are born every minute and
with the population increasing by almost 3 people per second. Life relies solely upon the biomedical
sciences. It s an area of expertise that is constantly advancing out, therefore to study the convolution
of the human body and to contribute to such a field has lead me to apply to Biomedical Sciences at
University.
My interest in Biomedical Science came in a school run extended project scheme in which I devised a
study of genetic modification of the human body. I found that I was fascinated by whether the survival
of an organism was based on one s genome or one s environment. For example, I did research on
Michael Phelps, an eight time olympic gold medalist, who has said to have genetic advantages over
other olympic athletes. For instance, he is double jointed in the chest which enables him to extend his
arms higher above his head and pull down at an angle that increases his efficiency through the water
by 20% allowing him to make quicker starts and turns. The research gave me an insight of how
complex and sublime the inner structures and workings of the human body are, therefore has fuelled
my desire to study the physiology of human bodies beyond A Level. ... Show more content on

Essay about Counter Terrorism Unit
Introduction
*Note: information concerning the formation of the CTU is fictional Terrorism is one of the greatest
concerns of the 21st century. It is a method that has been embraced by many groups with many
different ideologies. It has the potential of causing major devastation, especially with the specter of
acts of nuclear, biological, and chemical terrorism. There have been many references by both the
media and politicians to a War on Terror, and if we are to characterize this as a war, it is a war with an
ill defined and changing enemy, no front lines, and a war that is fraught with moral dilemmas. In this
committee, we will simulate the other side of this battle the terrorist groups that exist throughout the

You will be tasked with the difficult attempt of consolidating your efforts, agreeing to shared aims,
and destroying the ability and willingness of the West to continue to degrade our nations and way of
life. With the United States drawing down its forces in Iraq, the work of the Iranians on their nuclear
technology, and recent developments in the world at large distracting the West, this is our chance to
strike back at our enemy after a decade of war in which we have continued to retreat. We must regain
our strength and influence in our homelands. You must rebuild the strength of your organizations, both
in terms of men and money and in terms of operational capacity and reach.
However, you must also be creative and take the fight back to the enemy s lands. For too long they
have sat in safety as they bomb our lands and invade us from afar. It is time for their populations to
feel the costs of war as we have felt it for decades. There are many weaknesses to be exploited and
avenues of approach. To you is left the task of figuring out which is most worthwhile and practical.
The price of failure is great, for failure means the loss of our beliefs and lands. Good luck, and may
you succeed in the monumental tasks before you.

Technology Changes In America
Technology was the highlight of every 7th graders day last year. Technology was interesting and fun
and always taught us something new. We as a class were constantly doing new activities on the
computers, but all that changed this year. Technology was replaced with a special class named Math
lab. At first most of our class knew what to think of what this new special would be. Yet after the first
class it was obvious what Math Lab was. Math lab was a boring, repetitive, strict class that only
minorly strengthens skills in Math that most of both classes already knew. If we do not bring back
technology instead of math lab we may not be able to learn computer skills that are needed in High
School.
If Technology does not come back instead of Math lab we and future 8th graders may not know skills
on the computer needed for high school. When our class enters high school, with technology as a class
gone, we will not know how to use important programs such as PowerPoint or Microsoft Word.
Knoxville Catholic, Farragut High school, and Lenoir City high school have a computers technology
class. They have no Math Lab or computers math class. So what then is the point of having a class that
does not exist in the later grades? If middle school is serving the purpose of preparing us for high
school then shouldn t we mimic the high schools? ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Every day at the last class is Math. And still we have Math class every day. Saying that Math Lab will
improve our understanding and knowledge of Math, and improve our GPA on Math scores simply isn t
true. 1 class every week on a subject we have every day will not solve anything! Furthermore the work
that we do in Math lab is the opposite of motivating. The work that remembers is repetitive and
boring, makes students not want to study! Math class should be for

Elvis Presley s Hound Dog
Jerry Leiber and Mike Stoller wrote one of the greatest hits of all times.
This soulful beat, legend song Hound Dog, has had many covers as the years have past. The first date
recorded was August 13, 1952. Hound Dog, is classified in the classic blues in 1952 and Willie Mae
Thornton was the first to press this through the recording studio. This song hit the blues genre of
music in the early 1950 s, and later doubled into rhythm and blues before taking off onto rock and roll
with Elvis Presley. Fans raved as Elvis moved to the beat of Hound Dog and moved soulfully to the
rhythm as Jimi Hendrix pumped out the melody.
The version of Hound Dog by Willie Mae Thornton, was very soul worthy. After listening to Willie
Mae Thornton, sing Hound Dog, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The inspiration has also touched more than just these three artists to produce and record Jerry Leiber s
Hound Dog. There is no bad or better cover for Hound Dog but, in my opinion I have enjoyed Elvis
Presley s cover of Hound Dog the most because it is uplifting and brings a charming spice into my
soul. His cheer and smile as he gave all he had to present Hound Dog to the audience wins my heart. I
have a love as well for rhythm and blues. Willie Mae and Jimi Hendrix are talented artists, but do not
win my top vote because this song and lyrics are about a spicy woman who is fired up and is throwing
out of her life the undesirable things. The man in her life she is fed up with and ready to move on. I
feel that Willie Mae Thornton and Jimi Hendrix covers are full of emotions that cause you to feel
lament and soul quenching pain. The woman in the story I do not feel is experiencing lost pain or
guilt. I love the spice that Elvis Presley throws at

Brief Personal Statement
I thrive on gaining knowledge. Even now, as a non traditional student and busy mother to two young
children, learning excites me. As an 18 year old in Germany, I began a 10 year career as a military
analyst that honed my ability to think critically, pay attention to detail, and visualize holistic solutions
to unique problems. However, I spent my free time riding a bike along The Rhine searching for a quiet
space to settle in with the wisdom of books such as The Art of Happiness and The Elegant Universe.
There, on those riverbanks, I discovered within myself an innate curiosity of the mind and the
fundamental nature of the world.
Subsequent experiences during my tours in Afghanistan, and other encounters with loss, firmly
cemented my resolve to help ease human suffering. Loss, and so grief of some variation, is an
inevitable consequence of human experience. I saw it s impact regularly when I volunteered at The
Colorado Neurological Institute on the faces of patients struggling to reclaim their lost sense of self
and family members burdened with anticipatory mourning. Despite its universal reach, though, the
effect of grief on cognition remains relatively unexplored. As a research assistant on this project, I aim

The Apparel Shopper
Comprhensive Case The Apparel Shopper
1. What overall conclusions do you reach after reading this case?
The information in the case gave the overall conclusion that the apparel industry is a very competitive
field to get into and in order to prosper companies must find their own personal niche within the
industry. A company cannot survive in the apparel industry by providing what is already available in
other stores. It is important to define a target market and appeal to their needs and wants. For instance,
Wal Mart appeals to low income individuals, Target and Old Navy appeal to more fashion sensitive
customers, and so on. Ultimately, stores must relate and direct efforts towards specific apparel
shoppers demographics and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Why or why not?
The retail implications are that most stores tend to follow the trends and not necessarily set them.
Americans are more conservative than Europeans in their apparel so if a new retailer is trying to break
into the market, he/she should consider how they want to market their clothing. If they want to stand
out, maybe they should invest in newer, trendier clothing. If not, then they should keep their target
market in mind. I don t agree with that statement however, I do believe Americans are trendy
themselves. Many people I know rely on celebrities, magazines, talk shows, and television to figure
out the latest styles and how to wear certain styles. I believe Americans acually focus quite a bit on
trends..especially younger generations. Older generations tend not to follow this idea however.
5. How could the information cited in the case be used in a retail information system?
The information in this case could be used by a retailer to help dicover how to cater to their target
market. Their retail information system can keep track of information on the types of customers that
shop at their stores, such as income level, gender, race, age, ethnicity, and clothing preferences. The
retailer then knows if they are targeting the right customers for their product line and price range or if
they need to change their target market.

Comparing Macbeth And Goold s Play
Macbeth, a play written by Shakespeare in 1606 is a tragedy surrounding a man Macbeth as he
unknowingly seals his own fate due to his own excessive ambition and greed. This tragedy has since
been taken to the big screen by many, one of which is director Rupert Goold. In 2010 Goold released a
television film version of play on the BBC. Despite the differences between the two, the movie does
effectively convey the overall message of the original story.
In Goold s version, we see pivotal moments such as the breaking of Macbeth and Lady Macbeths
bond. This moment is stressed just as much in the film as it is in the play because not only does it
show the breaking of such a strong bond, but it also leads into another important moment in which
Lady Macbeth is starting to get sort of delirious. The film also keeps up with the play and how it
makes sure to highlight certain symbols and motifs such as blood and darkness through setting and
lighting choice, special effects, staying true to the lines, etc. the director even goes as far as to
reinforce death through a different motif (dead children). As well as using dead bodies as apparitions.
All together the director has combined all these elements of the play to work well in film and show the
original theme/message of the play appropriately. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
For example, the movie is set during the Soviet Union, hinting at both the rule of Joseph Stalin who
was a power hungry man just like Macbeth (this connection is made through the portraits of Macbeth
shown throughout the film). While this does reinforce Macbeth s thirst for power, for some viewers it
is a little farfetched. In comparison to the play, film also uses modern day weaponry/methods of
fighting. But does not change the lines for such circumstances, and this for some, may also have a

The Psychology Of The Human Nervous System
There have been many predictions about what America will be like in the next few decades. The field
of neuroscience and the issue over mental health are two important issues that are affected by changes
in the future. New technological advances is a significant change that will affect this two issues in the
future. This change will have an affect on my career of criminal profiling in many ways.
The field of neuroscience has had many advances over the years. Neuroscience is the study of the

Public Shaming In The Scarlet Letter
Should Public Shaming be left in the Past? Wahh, Wahh, Wahh. Christina is crying as a result of
public humiliation. Public humiliation can hurt someone long term. In The Price of Public Shame
Monica Lewinski was hurt badly by public shaming, and she did not know if she could fight the
constant threats to her. Also, in Is the Internet a Mob without Consequence? Someone tweeted
something bad and in just a couple hours the responses to the tweet was very harsh. Finally in, The
Scarlet Letter, Hester Prynne made a mistake and she got publically humiliated for one mistake that
she made. This one mistake ruined her life. Because public shaming can ruin someone s life for one
little mistake they made, it should be left in the past due to the lack of a social life, and potentially
ruining their professional life.
The first component of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Humiliation can cause someone to feel lonely, and as a result of this will make that person have the
feeling that no one wants to be there friend. When someone is humiliated that person does not want to
show their face in public, which is a reason why they lack a social life. As stated in , The Scarlet
Letter, it states, Measured by the prisoner s experience, however, it might reckoned a journey of some
length; for, haughty as her demeanor was, she perchance underwent an agony from every footstep of
those that thronged to see her, as if her heart had been flung in the street for them all to spurn and
trample upon. This quote means that Hester is walking through the streets of her town and no one is
saying anything to her or making eye contact with her at all. She is being completely shunned for one
mistake that she had made. This must make Hester feel very sorrowful that no one is talking to her.
That indicated that public shaming can lead to the absence of a social life because no one is talking to
Hester at all because of what she did. Also, stated in The Price of Public

Minor Characters Impact on Willy Loman in Arthur Miller s play, Death of a Salesman
In the Arthur Miller play Death of a Salesman, Willy Loman comes in contact with several characters,
many of whom prompt him to examine his past as well as his conscience. Charley s son Bernard is
such a character. Lacking dimension and depth of character, Bernard functions primarily as a foil to
expose Willy s tragic and pathetic nature.
The other characters have no real interaction with Willy that would allow for development. During
Willy s first flashback, Bernard appears only to remind Biff of the Regents exam. Willy refers to
Bernard as a pest and an anemic, and Biff mimics his father by saying that Bernard is liked, but not
well liked. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Willy s predictions regarding Bernard are proven wrong later in the play. Bernard is successful; he is a
respected lawyer preparing to argue a case before the Supreme Court. In the stage directions, Arthur
Miller describes Bernard as a quiet, earnest, but self assured young man. When Willy meets him in
Charley s office, Bernard is reserved and polite. Aware of the success that Bernard has obtained, Willy
shows repect for him by calling him a brilliant man. While he may be happy for Bernard s well being,
Willy can t help but be reminded of his son s failures. He even asks of Charley how it is that Bernard
has accomplished such feats in spite of Charley s lack of interest. Charley hints that his son thrives
because of this neglect.
If Bernard s characterization is flat, then it can be reasoned that his creation is for a singular purpose.
Bernard is the symbol of success, which makes Willy s life all the more tragic for failing to recognize
this. Because Bernard s actions are mainly directed towards Willy, Bernard can also be considered an
extension of Willy s conscience. For example, when the two are in Charley s office speculating as to
why Biff didn t finish school, Bernard mentions that Biff lost his initiative after he came back from
Boston. This causes Willy to become angry and later to recall that night when his son discovered the
affair. Here, Bernard acts as a catalyst, causing Willy to realize the

Political Speech And Political Aspects Of Donald Trump s...
Donald Trump may be the American President, but he doesn t understand the importance of American
values particularly freedom of expression, pluralism and tolerance. In fact, he is a threat to them.
We saw yet another example of this on Friday, when Trump denounced NFL player Colin Kaepernick
and others like him who have taken a knee during the national anthem to protest what they view as
racial injustices in our nation. Trump declared at a campaign rally in Huntsville, Alabama, Wouldn t
you love to see one of these NFL owners, when somebody disrespects our flag, say, Get that son of a
bitch off the field right now, out, he s fired!
What Trump doesn t get is that Kaepernick wasn t taking a knee because he was trying to disrespect
our nation. It s because Kaepernick and others like him love this country and want it to live up to the
ideals it was founded upon.

It s meant for keeping secrets secret.
The objectives of Cryptography are as follows:
Confidentiality Ensuring that the information cannot be understood by anyone other than whom it was
intended.
Integrity Ensuring that the information cannot be altered in storage or in transit.
Non repudiation Where the creator or sender of information cannot later deny creation of the message

Mr Incredible is the main protagonist of The Incredibles film. He is portrayed as a strong; confident
and brave superhero. At first he is strong and independent and likes to work alone , but as the film
progresses he realises he cannot do everything by himself and needs his family to help him.
He is portrayed as strong by viewing him from high angles to make him look taller or bigger than the
person he is standing next to or the enemy he is fighting. When Mr Incredible is standing alone or has
just defeated an enemy, he stands tall with his fists on his hips and does the classic superhero s pose .
This not only makes him have a more confident and brave look, it make the viewer almost fear him
and therefore not want to fight with him.

Erik Erikson s Psychosocial Stages
Erikson s Psychosocial Stages Erik Erikson discussed psychosocial stages, his theory however was
predicated upon Sigmund Freud s theory of psychosexual stages. According to Erikson, the ego
develops as it prosperously resolves crises that are distinctly gregarious in nature. These involve
establishing a sense of confide in others, developing a sense of identity in society, and availing the
next generation prepare for the future. Erikson proposed a lifespan model of developing , taking in
five stages up to the age of 18 old age and three further levels beyond, well into adulthood. Erikson
suggests that there is still plenty of room for continued emergence and development throughout one s
life. Erikson put a great mountain of stress on the adolescent time period , feeling it was a crucial stage
for developing a person s identity. The outcome of this maturation timetable is a wide and integrated
set of life skills and abilities that function together within the autonomous individual. However,
instead of focusing on sexual development (like Freud), he was interested in how children socialize
and how this affects their sense of self. Psychosocial Stages Erikson s (1959) theory of psychosocial
development has eight distinct stages. 1. Trust vs. Mistrust Erikson s first psychosocial crisis occurs
during the first year of life, during this stage the infant is uncertain about the world in which they live.
To resolution these feelings of uncertainty the baby looks towards

The Mermaid Theme
I thought martial arts was my forte, but then I realized I wasn t the only person that could do this when
I got into show business. Compared to others, I wasn t really that good. So, I became a children s TV
program host. This came from the mouth of one of the famous comedy film directors named Stephen
Chow.
One of the films I like is The Mermaid which is a romantic comedy film directed by Stephen Chow. It
was released in the year 2016 and it also broke a few box office records such as the biggest opening
day and biggest single day gross in China. The main characters of this film are played by actor Deng

Mermaid , Deng Chao played the male lead role of Liu Xuan, in which he did a good job of it. Deng
Chao uses his comedic talents and great acting skills to give audiences a good laugh in the movie. He
also has high popularity in China so it would be a good choice of having popular actors being the lead
role to attract interest in audiences. As for the female lead role, Stephen Chow chose Lin Yun to be the

Head Start Case Study
Dear Head Start Board Member, I as do I am sure that parents may be looking forward to their kids
returning to school, but they re probably not so excited about the daily challenges around
transportation. Not only do most kids need to be dropped off they need to be picked up from school.
For working parents who have their own schedules to maintain, all this can be hugely stressful, and I
know lots of families can relate to this. I remember back to when my son first start here at this center,
and they still had bus transportation available, it was so much more convenient and less stressful
getting him to from school every day. Now that I have two children who are kindergarten age and

These families are the ones who are most in need of these services but they are also the ones
struggling to make sure their children get to class daily. I see many parents who have to walk their
children to school even when it s cold, wet, and even snowing outside because this is their only
available option. While this may appear normal I see it as a risk of those children getting sick because
they were being exposed to these conditions. As scientist now warn, Rhinovirus is the most frequent

rhinovirus strains replicate better at the cooler temperatures found in the nasal cavity than at lung
temperature.

U.s. Federal Election Commissions
In the land of politics, the more money that one has is the better. This is no exception when it comes to
campaigns and elections. The goal of any political campaign is to get their nominee the votes they
need to win. Whether this is through negative or positive campaign tactics, one thing can fuel a
campaigns success is money. Money in a campaign means that more advertising can be bought. This is
the perfect way to get the candidate seen by the public and is also a way to paint a negative picture of
the other candidate. However, questions can be raised where does the money that funds campaigns or
campaign advertisement come from, should there be regulations imposed to monitor where it comes
from and what part of the campaign does this money fund? Questions like these and more were
answered in the Supreme Court Case Citizens United Vs. Federal Election Commissions and many
were not happy about this ruling. Citizens United is a known for being a non profit organization that
fought for the rights of citizens. They believed that United States citizens should know what is going
on in the government and be in control (Citizens United Foundation, 2016). It is important to Citizens
United that all citizens are aware of policies that are in place. What impact certain laws will have on

The Fact Of Blackness By Frantz Fanon
Frantz Fanon s The Fact of Blackness, a chapter from Black Skin, White Masks describes the anxiety
felt while held in the gaze of the colonizer. A reading of Judith Butler s Gender Trouble in conjunction
with Fanon s work raises questions and possible strategies on how to reject neocolonialism and
contemporary white supremacy. Fanon s idea of blackness is performative but not for the gain of the
black man, rather for the white man. Butler suggests that regaining control of the black man s fate
comes from interpellation, the act, of interrupting the white man s claims or ideas, or rather their
misconceptions of the black man. A way of disregarding the white man s claims is a form of rejecting
that normativity, similar to Butler s analysis of drag where one rejects normativity altogether. The
black man s lack of interpellation enhances the white man s performativity furthering white
supremacy; a way of rejecting neocolonialism that disregards societal norms.
Performative utterances do not describe but perform the action they designate (Culler 96), and the
repetitive assertions from the white man placed upon the black man results in him being inferior. The
white man s performativity about Butler s idea of gender trouble, that gender, sexuality and biological
makeup are not correlated. It also refers to oppressions of genders that do not fit the norm of society.
For Butler gender acts as a strategy for survival within compulsory systems, gender is performative

Censorship In The Movie The Sacrifice
Towards the end of our reading, Nafisi tells the story of a Russian movie called The Sacrifice being
released in theaters. Movies are much like books in the sense that they are an escape from reality.
Movies are another form of storytelling, but this time the story is told through cinematic art instead of
words on pages. In the 1930s during the Great Depression, films were an outlet. During this time, the
people who had the money would buy their movie tickets and go see a movie in order to forget about
their current situation. Much like when you read a book, when you watch a movie, you re submersed
into another world, another life and you acquire another character s problems and emotions and forget
your own. There are the kind of movies that helped you escape, then there were the kind of movies
that expressed serious issues ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Nafisi says, Knowing that I could not understand the words and that if I thought about the censorship I
would be too angry to watch, I surrendered to the magic of colors and images. (Nafisi 206) The people
of Tehran were so eager to see it because, ...were thirsty for some form of beauty, even in an
incomprehensible overintellectual, abstract film with no subtitles and censored out of recognition. I
believe people were so keen on seeing the film because it was the first time they were able to be
together as a community without someone telling them what they had to do or what they had to
believe. It was also a form of catharsis for many. The feeling of being able to show up to a theater and
be able to see a film was surprising to them, since many people had not been in a theater for years.
Although the people were being oppressed by not being able to choose the movie or language that the
film was in, they were still able to feel like they grasped a miniscule piece of freedom for just one

Michelangelo Creation Of Adam Essay
Michelangelo is without a doubt, one of the most brilliant artists in history. One of his most famous
masterpieces occupies what is probably the largest canvas on earth: The Sistine Chapel. Each fresco
contains a glimpse of creation using nine separate stories from the book of Genesis. Yet the most
famous image from this 134 ft. x 45 ft. painting is The Creation of Adam. The image of God reaching
down to Adam is so commonplace that many forget, or do not know, how controversial this portrayal
of the divine was in the 16th century. God was a divine king seated upon a throne who wore royal
robes, a papal crown, and held a scepter in his hand. This was not a God that conveyed a sense of
warmness, intimacy, or desire for human contact. God was ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

Interestingly, the elements that represent this in the painting are God s clothing, nearness to Adam, and
the extended finger. God is no longer clothed in royal finery, but wears a garment that offers no
protection or distance from the created. By adding how close God is to Adam, a strong sense of human
intimacy emerges. Yet the most significant feature of this painting is the outstretched finger of God.
Through touch, God imparts life to Adam. Through touch, Adam receives not only physical breath, but
spiritual breath. Michelangelo himself said, To touch can be to give life. This was true of his famous
painting, but is also true for humanity today. (Keltner)
Research has shown how vital touch is to human development. At the University of California,
Berkley, professor of psychology Dacher Keltner, has conducted extensive research on the science of
human touch. In a lecture to his students, Keltner said, In recent years, a wave of studies has
documented some incredible emotional and physical health benefits that come from touch. This
research is suggesting that touch is truly fundamental to human communication, bonding, and health.

What Are The Techniques Used In Strictly Ballroom
A life lived in fear is a life half lived . In order to communicate this idea in the screenplay Strictly
Ballroom , Baz Luhrmann and Craig Pearce employ techniques such as language, setting and stage
directions to construct images of characters Scott and Barry Fife who embody the theme of
individualism versus conformity. Additionally, the song I was only nineteen by Redgum also uses
alliteration, rhetorical questions and flashbacks to construct an image of a traumatised soldier and his
experiences of war. Throughout, the screenplay Strictly Ballroom the character Scott Hastings conveys
his desire to be more of an individual by injecting new steps into his dance routines. This idea is

Social Injustice in Roundhouse
Lives for Native Americans on reservations have never quite been easy. There are many struggles that
most outsiders are completely oblivious about. In her book The Roundhouse, Louise Erdrich brings
those problems to light. She gives her readers a feel of what it is like to be Native American by
illustrating the struggles through the life of Joe, a 13 year old Native American boy living on a North
Dakota reservation. This book explores an avenue of advocacy against social injustices. The most
observable plight Joe suffers is figuring out how to deal with the injustice acted against his mother,

boundaries. Which is why I try to run a tight courtroom, Joe. What I am doing now is for the future,
though it may seem small, or trivial, or boring, to you (Erdrich 229 230).
Because he is too young to fully understand all the factors of the situation, Joe teeters between taking
the law into his own hands and trusting his father to achieve justice through diligence. Inevitably, Joe
plots to take his own actions against the attacker. He and his friends conspire to find the attacker. They
undermine Bazil s attempt for restorative, long term justice when they confront the attacker and shoot

In addition to the issues within the family, the crime committed against mother has cause inner turmoil

Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease Report
Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease (GERD) is a disease of the digestive tract that can cause asthma and
other complications. GERD does not affect the heart itself even though the heart can burn as a result;
GERD can mimic the signs of a heart attack. This report will discuss how a prescription is not
necessarily needed for treatment, medicine can be purchased OTC. This disease also affects infants
and small children.
Component I.
Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease (GERD) is a chronic digestive disorder disease that causes gastric
acid flow from the stomach to the esophagus. GERD occurs when the stomach is weak or relaxes
inappropriately allowing the flow of gastric content to flow upwards (1998 2015 Mayo Foundation).

Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease affects the body as a whole in different ways. GERD can contribute
to asthma due to the fact that acid reflux can irritate the air ways and lungs which affects breathing
(Ray, Secrest, 2007, p. 36). GERD can cause indigestion (dyspepsia) which causes pain and burning
sensations in the upper stomach. In some cases GERD can be mistaken for a heart attack; it can cause

Theme Of The Word Love And Arranged Marriage
Another area of similarity is the theme of love being explored exhaustively. There are different
dimensions of love in the two stories. In The Word Love and Arranged Marriage, We only have each

and maternal love displayed by the lady s mother towards her. The writer perfectly captured how she
never remarried and dedicated her life to raising her despite the fact that her husband died two months
after her birth. The passionate love that existed between the lady and her foreign lover is noticeable.
Though she is overwhelmed by the impending consequence of her relationship which is antithetical to
the Calcutta s marriage rite (There has not been rain for a long time.) I am cherished. (Banerjee 61).
This suggests how intense and profound her love is to the guy; she feels she is blessed. She found it
difficult to separate and work away. In fact, at a time, she almost forgot about the issue of arranged

because, in Calcutta, Marriage is usually arranged between couples sometimes without their
knowledge like the case of the lady s mother who got to know her husband on the wedding day. In
Silver Pavement and Golden Roof, the theme of culture clash is also artistically explored. First, public
drinking is not frequent in Calcutta. Secondly, people calling themselves bad names are uncommon in
Calcutta, and lastly, people attacking foreigners does not exist in Calcutta. For the lady, all of this put

Investing Stocks and Bonds
Investing in Stocks and Bonds Stocks and Bonds are different in many ways. A stock is a portion or
share of the ownership of a corporation. A share will give the owner of the stock the company s profits

is someone willing to buy. A bond, on the other hand, is a fixed interest financial asset issued by
governments, companies, banks, and other large entities. Bonds also are called funds. Bonds pay the
owner a fixed amount a specific date, or on specified dates depending on the type of bond. If the bond

As for my personal encounter of individual with a disability; the grew up around a cousin who was

A mujtahid is an Islamic scholar who is competent to interpret sharia by Ijtihad.
The Qur an commands Ijithad in early Islam as it was the common practice and later it was combined
with early Islamic philosophy. Slowly it fell out of practice in the Sunni fiqh for many reasons.
A western scholar called Joseph Schacht stated that the close of the door of Ijtihad had occurred by the
beginning for the 10th century.
Other scholars such as Wael Hallaq demonstrated that Ijtihad has remained an essential part of the
Sunni Muslim tradition, despite the emphasis on the taqlid. Hallaq wrote that a minority always
claimed that a properly qualified scholar must have the right to ijtihad at all times. Long after the 10th
century the principles of ijtihad continued to be discussed in the Islamic legal literature.
Qiya s;
In Islamic jurisprudence, Qiya s is the process of deductive analogy in which the teachings of the
Hadith are compared and contrasted with those of the Qur an, in order to apply a known injunction to
a new circumstance and create a new injunction. The ruling of the Sunnah and the Qur an may be used
to solve or provide a response to a new problem that may arise. This, maybe the only the case
providing that the set precedent or paradigm and the new problem that has come about will share
operative causes (illah). Illah is the specific set of circumstances that trigger a certain law into action.

Taming Of The Shrew Misogyny
The Taming of the Shrew, reflects the problematic nature of the play s central conception, often taking
eccentric casting and staging approaches in an effort to recapture the plays comic elements. Criticisers
claim that Petruchio is Katherina s rescuer, the prudent man who guides her to a better and truer self.
Unlike other misogynistic literature, this play mocks not only the woman herself in the person of the
shrew, but male attitudes towards women.
Shakespeare presents misogyny throughout the play but firstly starts at the beginning when Katherina
is forced by her father, Baptista, to get married to a man of his choice, unfortunately for Katherina this
man was Petruchio. Nowadays forced marriage is considered as cruel and demeaning as we ... Show

otherwise. Thy husband is thy lord, thy life, thy keeper, Thy head, thy sovereign; one that cares for

the night in storms, the day in cold, Whilst thou li st warm at home, secure and safe; And craves no

speech that defines the marriage contract. Katherina understands that she must give in to Petruchio if
she is to find peace. Too little payment for so great a debt. This shows the level of her transformation,
Petruchio has finally tamed Katherina. Although we believe that Katherina has been tamed by her
husband, we have to take into consideration whether Katherina does love Petruchio or if this is all a
disguise. One critic named Pederson explains that Katherina s final speech expresses a direct denial of
the method by which Shakespeare allows Petruchio to tame Katherina, because it asserts that the
example of bad tempered, uncontrolled behaviour can only bring about behaviour of the same kind in

  • 2. Connie s Sexuality In Joyce Carol Oates Smooth Talk Smooth Talk is a drama movie based on the short story, Where are you going, where have you been written by Joyce Carol Oates in 1966. The story was inspired in some way by the true history of Tucson murders that was committed by Charles Schmid. Connie represented a young girl that is 15 years old at that period and it is eager to explore her sexuality. In the other hand, she feels that she is not understood by her family. Therefore, she rebels against her family adopting a risky behavior that concluded with her rape. Connie behavior is at some point responsible for her misfortune. As well her family environment contributes to her misconduct. Not less important is the fact of her affair with an older man, who rape and murder her.(Camby, 1) Oates make an extraordinary work portraying an image of the girls that cannot wait to be a woman. While Connie is running as fast as she can, immersing herself in the adult life of young woman who is awakening her sexuality, she seduces herself into the wrong path. • 3. How Does Don Giovanni Contribute To The Enlightenment Don Giovanni is a one of a kind character, yet so predictable living a certain lifestyle, almost to the point of being mysterious. It is the enlightenment era however, where a lot of impossibilities were being explored, and presented to the public in different forms, including this opera, Don Giovanni. Although Don Giovanni seems like a total embodiment of immorality, he nevertheless carries some admirable principles, sparkling the enlightenment idea through the story of Don Giovanni. As we all know, the Enlightenment is known as the era of reasoning. Many had started to realize the power of rational and logical thinking. Don Giovanni is a great example for this type of thinking. Although more probably accuse him rather than praise him of seducing so many women, Giovanni has his own reasoning to it. (How can it be fair if I just marry one woman) ? This is in fact capable of bearing careful thoughts. It would not be fair for Giovanni to stay with one single woman, for thus not only would it be unfair to all the other women, but Giovanni would ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In Lord Byron s Don Juan, Pleasure s a sin, and sometimes sin s a pleasure (Canto the first). It was not uncommon to consider pleasure as something sinful, but to think the reverse such that sin brings pleasure is a brand new idea. • 4. The Peninsular Oriental Steam Navigation Company General Information In 1822, the very first cruise line, known as the Peninsular Oriental Steam Navigation Company, was founded by Brodie McGhie Willcox and Arthur Anderson, both experienced in the shipping industry. Its first ship was the 206 ton paddle steamer called the William Fawcett, which was first deployed in 1835 from London to Spain and Portugal. More recently, in the 1960 s and early 1970 s, three of the world s largest cruise lines were established. The first one, Norwegian Cruise Line, was introduced when airline travel was becoming increasingly popular. The cruise industry declined significantly from this competition. The second cruise line, Royal Caribbean International, was also experiencing the same challenges as ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In fact, Royal Caribbean owns 7 of the 10 largest cruise ships in the world. Its newest cruise ship, Anthem of the Seas, has the most innovative technology onboard such as skydiving and a 360° view of the ocean. Has the cruise industry evolved over the past years? The cruise industry has definitely evolved over the years to meet the changing demands and expectations of its passengers. The most important changes in the industry over the years are the introduction of shore excursions, new cruise routes and changes in the ships themselves. The first cruise ships offered few to no excursions while all the modern cruise lines offer over 100 excursions per cruise. These excursions can include participating in an actual boat race in Philipsburg, climbing waterfalls in Ocho Rios and scuba diving which is always very popular among passengers. They are designed to give the passengers a new and thrilling experience that they cannot attain at home. In the old days, the only cruise routes available were transatlantic and small European routes. The transatlantic route became unpopular in the 1960 s as air travel shortened travelling time from less than 20 hours by air versus four days by cruise. However, with the launch of newer, ... • 5. Biomedical Engineering Personal Statement Homo sapiens are known to be the most advanced creatures on Earth, the number of humans in the world is exponentially increasing to nearly over seven billion as 250 babies are born every minute and with the population increasing by almost 3 people per second. Life relies solely upon the biomedical sciences. It s an area of expertise that is constantly advancing out, therefore to study the convolution of the human body and to contribute to such a field has lead me to apply to Biomedical Sciences at University. My interest in Biomedical Science came in a school run extended project scheme in which I devised a study of genetic modification of the human body. I found that I was fascinated by whether the survival of an organism was based on one s genome or one s environment. For example, I did research on Michael Phelps, an eight time olympic gold medalist, who has said to have genetic advantages over other olympic athletes. For instance, he is double jointed in the chest which enables him to extend his arms higher above his head and pull down at an angle that increases his efficiency through the water by 20% allowing him to make quicker starts and turns. The research gave me an insight of how complex and sublime the inner structures and workings of the human body are, therefore has fuelled my desire to study the physiology of human bodies beyond A Level. ... It is a method that has been embraced by many groups with many different ideologies. It has the potential of causing major devastation, especially with the specter of acts of nuclear, biological, and chemical terrorism. There have been many references by both the media and politicians to a War on Terror, and if we are to characterize this as a war, it is a war with an ill defined and changing enemy, no front lines, and a war that is fraught with moral dilemmas. You will be tasked with the difficult attempt of consolidating your efforts, agreeing to shared aims, and destroying the ability and willingness of the West to continue to degrade our nations and way of life. With the United States drawing down its forces in Iraq, the work of the Iranians on their nuclear technology, and recent developments in the world at large distracting the West, this is our chance to strike back at our enemy after a decade of war in which we have continued to retreat. We must regain our strength and influence in our homelands. You must rebuild the strength of your organizations, both in terms of men and money and in terms of operational capacity and reach. However, you must also be creative and take the fight back to the enemy s lands. For too long they have sat in safety as they bomb our lands and invade us from afar. It is time for their populations to feel the costs of war as we have felt it for decades. There are many weaknesses to be exploited and avenues of approach. To you is left the task of figuring out which is most worthwhile and practical. The price of failure is great, for failure means the loss of our beliefs and lands. Good luck, and may you succeed in the monumental tasks before you. Background on Terrorism Terrorism is a term whose definition remains disputed to this day. Although countries and people argue ... • 7. Technology Changes In America Technology was the highlight of every 7th graders day last year. Technology was interesting and fun and always taught us something new. We as a class were constantly doing new activities on the computers, but all that changed this year. Technology was replaced with a special class named Math lab. At first most of our class knew what to think of what this new special would be. Yet after the first class it was obvious what Math Lab was. Math lab was a boring, repetitive, strict class that only minorly strengthens skills in Math that most of both classes already knew. If we do not bring back technology instead of math lab we may not be able to learn computer skills that are needed in High School. If Technology does not come back instead of Math lab we and future 8th graders may not know skills on the computer needed for high school. When our class enters high school, with technology as a class gone, we will not know how to use important programs such as PowerPoint or Microsoft Word. Knoxville Catholic, Farragut High school, and Lenoir City high school have a computers technology class. They have no Math Lab or computers math class. So what then is the point of having a class that does not exist in the later grades? If middle school is serving the purpose of preparing us for high school then shouldn t we mimic the high schools? ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Every day at the last class is Math. The first date recorded was August 13, 1952. Hound Dog, is classified in the classic blues in 1952 and Willie Mae Thornton was the first to press this through the recording studio. This song hit the blues genre of music in the early 1950 s, and later doubled into rhythm and blues before taking off onto rock and roll with Elvis Presley. His cheer and smile as he gave all he had to present Hound Dog to the audience wins my heart. I have a love as well for rhythm and blues. Willie Mae and Jimi Hendrix are talented artists, but do not win my top vote because this song and lyrics are about a spicy woman who is fired up and is throwing out of her life the undesirable things. • 9. Brief Personal Statement I thrive on gaining knowledge. Even now, as a non traditional student and busy mother to two young children, learning excites me. As an 18 year old in Germany, I began a 10 year career as a military analyst that honed my ability to think critically, pay attention to detail, and visualize holistic solutions to unique problems. However, I spent my free time riding a bike along The Rhine searching for a quiet space to settle in with the wisdom of books such as The Art of Happiness and The Elegant Universe. There, on those riverbanks, I discovered within myself an innate curiosity of the mind and the fundamental nature of the world. Subsequent experiences during my tours in Afghanistan, and other encounters with loss, firmly cemented my resolve to help ease human suffering. Loss, and so grief of some variation, is an inevitable consequence of human experience. I saw it s impact regularly when I volunteered at The Colorado Neurological Institute on the faces of patients struggling to reclaim their lost sense of self and family members burdened with anticipatory mourning. Despite its universal reach, though, the effect of grief on cognition remains relatively unexplored. • 10. The Apparel Shopper Comprhensive Case The Apparel Shopper 1. What overall conclusions do you reach after reading this case? The information in the case gave the overall conclusion that the apparel industry is a very competitive field to get into and in order to prosper companies must find their own personal niche within the industry. A company cannot survive in the apparel industry by providing what is already available in other stores. It is important to define a target market and appeal to their needs and wants. For instance, Wal Mart appeals to low income individuals, Target and Old Navy appeal to more fashion sensitive customers, and so on. Ultimately, stores must relate and direct efforts towards specific apparel shoppers demographics and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Why or why not? The retail implications are that most stores tend to follow the trends and not necessarily set them. Americans are more conservative than Europeans in their apparel so if a new retailer is trying to break into the market, he/she should consider how they want to market their clothing. If they want to stand out, maybe they should invest in newer, trendier clothing. If not, then they should keep their target market in mind. I don t agree with that statement however, I do believe Americans are trendy themselves. Many people I know rely on celebrities, magazines, talk shows, and television to figure out the latest styles and how to wear certain styles. I believe Americans acually focus quite a bit on trends..especially younger generations. Older generations tend not to follow this idea however. 5. How could the information cited in the case be used in a retail information system? The information in this case could be used by a retailer to help dicover how to cater to their target market. Their retail information system can keep track of information on the types of customers that shop at their stores, such as income level, gender, race, age, ethnicity, and clothing preferences. The retailer then knows if they are targeting the right customers for their product line and price range or if they need to change their target market. 6 What additional consumer related information would you ... • 11. Comparing Macbeth And Goold s Play Macbeth, a play written by Shakespeare in 1606 is a tragedy surrounding a man Macbeth as he unknowingly seals his own fate due to his own excessive ambition and greed. This tragedy has since been taken to the big screen by many, one of which is director Rupert Goold. In 2010 Goold released a television film version of play on the BBC. Despite the differences between the two, the movie does effectively convey the overall message of the original story. In Goold s version, we see pivotal moments such as the breaking of Macbeth and Lady Macbeths bond. This moment is stressed just as much in the film as it is in the play because not only does it show the breaking of such a strong bond, but it also leads into another important moment in which Lady Macbeth is starting to get sort of delirious. The film also keeps up with the play and how it makes sure to highlight certain symbols and motifs such as blood and darkness through setting and lighting choice, special effects, staying true to the lines, etc. the director even goes as far as to reinforce death through a different motif (dead children). As well as using dead bodies as apparitions. Minor Characters Impact on Willy Loman in Arthur Miller s play, Death of a Salesman In the Arthur Miller play Death of a Salesman, Willy Loman comes in contact with several characters, many of whom prompt him to examine his past as well as his conscience. Charley s son Bernard is such a character. Lacking dimension and depth of character, Bernard functions primarily as a foil to expose Willy s tragic and pathetic nature. The other characters have no real interaction with Willy that would allow for development. During Willy s first flashback, Bernard appears only to remind Biff of the Regents exam. Aware of the success that Bernard has obtained, Willy shows repect for him by calling him a brilliant man. While he may be happy for Bernard s well being, Willy can t help but be reminded of his son s failures. He even asks of Charley how it is that Bernard has accomplished such feats in spite of Charley s lack of interest. Charley hints that his son thrives because of this neglect. If Bernard s characterization is flat, then it can be reasoned that his creation is for a singular purpose. Bernard is the symbol of success, which makes Willy s life all the more tragic for failing to recognize this. Erik Erikson s Psychosocial Stages Erikson s Psychosocial Stages Erik Erikson discussed psychosocial stages, his theory however was predicated upon Sigmund Freud s theory of psychosexual stages. According to Erikson, the ego develops as it prosperously resolves crises that are distinctly gregarious in nature. These involve establishing a sense of confide in others, developing a sense of identity in society, and availing the next generation prepare for the future. Erikson proposed a lifespan model of developing , taking in five stages up to the age of 18 old age and three further levels beyond, well into adulthood. Erikson suggests that there is still plenty of room for continued emergence and development throughout one s life. Erikson put a great mountain of stress on the adolescent time period , feeling it was a crucial stage for developing a person s identity. The outcome of this maturation timetable is a wide and integrated set of life skills and abilities that function together within the autonomous individual. However, instead of focusing on sexual development (like Freud), he was interested in how children socialize and how this affects their sense of self. A reading of Judith Butler s Gender Trouble in conjunction with Fanon s work raises questions and possible strategies on how to reject neocolonialism and contemporary white supremacy. Fanon s idea of blackness is performative but not for the gain of the black man, rather for the white man. Butler suggests that regaining control of the black man s fate comes from interpellation, the act, of interrupting the white man s claims or ideas, or rather their misconceptions of the black man. A way of disregarding the white man s claims is a form of rejecting that normativity, similar to Butler s analysis of drag where one rejects normativity altogether. The black man s lack of interpellation enhances the white man s performativity furthering white supremacy; a way of rejecting neocolonialism that disregards societal norms. Performative utterances do not describe but perform the action they designate (Culler 96), and the repetitive assertions from the white man placed upon the black man results in him being inferior. • 30. Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease Report Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease (GERD) is a disease of the digestive tract that can cause asthma and other complications. GERD does not affect the heart itself even though the heart can burn as a result; GERD can mimic the signs of a heart attack. This report will discuss how a prescription is not necessarily needed for treatment, medicine can be purchased OTC. This disease also affects infants and small children. Component I. Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease (GERD) is a chronic digestive disorder disease that causes gastric acid flow from the stomach to the esophagus. GERD occurs when the stomach is weak or relaxes inappropriately allowing the flow of gastric content to flow upwards (1998 2015 Mayo Foundation). Even though heart burn occurs with GERD it does not cause any harm to the heart itself. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The mediastinum plane contains the esophagus, and the stomach is located in the abdominal cavity (Anatomy Terms, 2015). Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease affects the body as a whole in different ways. GERD can contribute to asthma due to the fact that acid reflux can irritate the air ways and lungs which affects breathing (Ray, Secrest, 2007, p. 36). GERD can cause indigestion (dyspepsia) which causes pain and burning sensations in the upper stomach. In some cases GERD can be mistaken for a heart attack; it can cause pain in the chest the same as a heart attack ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 31. Theme Of The Word Love And Arranged Marriage Another area of similarity is the theme of love being explored exhaustively. There are different dimensions of love in the two stories. In The Word Love and Arranged Marriage, We only have each other she often told her. (Banerjee 58) This suggests that there is a pure demonstration of compassion and maternal love displayed by the lady s mother towards her. The writer perfectly captured how she never remarried and dedicated her life to raising her despite the fact that her husband died two months after her birth. The passionate love that existed between the lady and her foreign lover is noticeable. Though she is overwhelmed by the impending consequence of her relationship which is antithetical to the Calcutta s marriage rite (There has not been rain for a long time.) I am cherished. (Banerjee 61). This suggests how intense and profound her love is to the guy; she feels she is blessed. She found it difficult to separate and work away. In fact, at a time, she almost forgot about the issue of arranged marriage. In the same vein, the theme of love is depicted in Silver Pavements ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... There seems to be a clash of culture. In the first story, the foreign lover can t understand why the mother would oppose their relationship. To him, it is just absurd. There is a clash of the culture here because, in Calcutta, Marriage is usually arranged between couples sometimes without their knowledge like the case of the lady s mother who got to know her husband on the wedding day. In Silver Pavement and Golden Roof, the theme of culture clash is also artistically explored. First, public drinking is not frequent in Calcutta. Secondly, people calling themselves bad names are uncommon in Calcutta, and lastly, people attacking foreigners does not exist in Calcutta. For the lady, all of this put together come as one rude shock which later degenerated to disillusionment and feelings of nostalgia to the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 32. Investing Stocks and Bonds Investing in Stocks and Bonds Stocks and Bonds are different in many ways. A stock is a portion or share of the ownership of a corporation. A share will give the owner of the stock the company s profits or loses over time. The good thing about stocks is they can be sold at almost any time as long as there is someone willing to buy. A bond, on the other hand, is a fixed interest financial asset issued by governments, companies, banks, and other large entities. Bonds also are called funds. Bonds pay the owner a fixed amount a specific date, or on specified dates depending on the type of bond. If the bond is a discount bond, then there is one pay date at the end. I tried Chevron Corporation because they seemed reliable compared to other oil and gas companies (Chevron). Chevron Corporation has been known to strive beyond expectations, and care for the safety of the workforce and environment (Chevron). Chevron products are recognized for their quality, performance, and technology around the world (Chevron). I decided to be on the safe side and only invest 1,000 dollars in Chevron Corporation because of the risk factor that comes into play with the oil and gas industry. Chevron Corporation actually did well after all. The share prices were high to start with. Chevron Corporation had one stock split within the ten years. In September of 2004, the 2:1 split helped my number of shares go from about 48 shares to around 97 shares total. In the end I owned a total of approximately 180 shares. These shares sold for a big $105.38 each. This nearly doubled the 10,000 dollars. The total after the ten years in Chevron Corporation was $18,982.67. The one mutual fund I invested in was with PIMCO. This global investment authority offers many different bonds such as: absolute return bonds, asset allocations, convertibles, municipal bonds, core bonds, etc. (PIMCO). The bond I chose was a core bond. This bond was the PIMCO Total Return Fund. This particular fund focuses on a solid core fixed income (PIMCO). Why We Should Not Be Allowed In Sports In sports there s more to it than just running and scoring, and winning there is actually science involved I know that sounds weird but it is actually true. In sports for some players with moves that have never been seen and are unlikely that many people have it like speed, caching abilities, jumping and more they put some motion censored things around their hands and they can see how good caching abilities. So They put people up against people or objects like one time one of the fastest running backs in the NFL and they put him up against a cheetah. As for my personal encounter of individual with a disability; the grew up around a cousin who was with brain damage, as a kid I would go over to aunt s home and sit with him and read books; I would massage his hands and feet because he would have seizures and I would see my aunt doing it so I just picked up on what the adults were doing and try to help out. Even though he could not talk I felt he could hear what I was saying because one time I was reading a book called Henrietta Hippo and I would act the scenes and whenever I made the sound of the hippo he would look at me and make a funny sound like he was trying to repeat what I was doing. The Qur an commands Ijithad in early Islam as it was the common practice and later it was combined with early Islamic philosophy. Slowly it fell out of practice in the Sunni fiqh for many reasons. A western scholar called Joseph Schacht stated that the close of the door of Ijtihad had occurred by the beginning for the 10th century. Other scholars such as Wael Hallaq demonstrated that Ijtihad has remained an essential part of the Sunni Muslim tradition, despite the emphasis on the taqlid. Hallaq wrote that a minority always claimed that a properly qualified scholar must have the right to ijtihad at all times. Long after the 10th century the principles of ijtihad continued to be discussed in the Islamic legal literature. • 37. Taming Of The Shrew Misogyny The Taming of the Shrew, reflects the problematic nature of the play s central conception, often taking eccentric casting and staging approaches in an effort to recapture the plays comic elements. Criticisers claim that Petruchio is Katherina s rescuer, the prudent man who guides her to a better and truer self. Unlike other misogynistic literature, this play mocks not only the woman herself in the person of the shrew, but male attitudes towards women. Shakespeare presents misogyny throughout the play but firstly starts at the beginning when Katherina is forced by her father, Baptista, to get married to a man of his choice, unfortunately for Katherina this man was Petruchio. Nowadays forced marriage is considered as cruel and demeaning as we ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Although Katherina does not want to admit that she desires him, her speech at the end implies otherwise. Thy husband is thy lord, thy life, thy keeper, Thy head, thy sovereign; one that cares for thee, And for thy maintenance; commits his body To painful labour, both by sea and land; To watch the night in storms, the day in cold, Whilst thou li st warm at home, secure and safe; And craves no other tribute at thy hands But love, fair looks, and true obedience Too little payment for so great a debt. The final scene depicts the conclusion of the taming process when Katherina delivers her famous speech that defines the marriage contract. Katherina understands that she must give in to Petruchio if she is to find peace. Too little payment for so great a debt. This shows the level of her transformation, Petruchio has finally tamed Katherina. Although we believe that Katherina has been tamed by her husband, we have to take into consideration whether Katherina does love Petruchio or if this is all a disguise. One critic named Pederson explains that Katherina s final speech expresses a direct denial of the method by which Shakespeare allows Petruchio to tame Katherina, because it asserts that the example of bad tempered, uncontrolled behaviour can only bring about behaviour of the same kind in the learner, not a change to ...
