Synthesis And Characterization Of Aspirin
Organic Chemistry 322 Lab Report
Part I. Synthesis and Characterization of Aspirin
Part II. Extraction of Natural Products
Name: Bianca Davis
Instructor: Dr. Russell
Date Submitted: December 8, 2014 Introduction Aspirin is a substance known as acetylsalicylic acid.
It is used mainly as an over the counter drug used to relieve inflammation, pain, and fever. Its natural
form is salicylic acid. This synthesis process requires the acetylation of salicylic acid with acetic
anhydride. The purpose of this lab is to synthesize and purify aspirin. We also characterized the aspirin
via melting point, iron (III) chloride test, pH test, and thin layer chromatography. The synthesized
aspirin successfully produced a 65.38% yield.

This was set aside for a water bath later in the experiment. 13.8 g of salicylic acid followed by 14mL
of acetic anhydride is combined to a 125mL Erlenmeyer flask. Eight drops of concentrated H2SO4
was added to the Erlenmeyer flask that housed the salicylic acid and acetic anhydride. The contents
were then gently swirled and transported to the hot water bath created earlier. The heat from the water
bath and occasional mixing of the contents quickly dissolved the powder contents. The flask was then
removed and combined with 40mL of cold distilled water. The flask was then placed into an ice bath
to create a slush like substance. A vacuum filtration system was assembled and the slush was washed
three times with distilled water. The product was left to dry in lab drawer for seven

The Secret Of NIMH Film Analysis
The Secret of NIMH plays with many different filming techniques in order to tell an amazing story.
The story is centered around a widowed mouse, Mrs. Brisby, who s child has fallen ill. Timmy, one of
her children, has fallen ill with ammonia and cannot be moved until he recovers. This is a problem
through because it s almost time for the farmer to begin plowing the fields. If the family does not
move they will be killed by the tractor. The tension and emotion of this film is excellently enhanced
by the lighting, music, shot length and color of each scene. Early on it is plain to see what Mrs. Brisby
s goals are, she wishes to protect her children. The harsh reality of their world starts with the inciting
incident: moving day. Moving day is ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The music increases in tempo and becomes louder in order to raise tension. Time is running out as her
home begins to sink. The tempo of the music acts as a clock, ticking away the time Mrs. Brisby and
the rats have to save the children. It mimics her own heart beat as she becomes fearful for their lives.
Once she uses the magic of the stone the music goes from being a terrible thunder to a voice of
triumph. The change in music makes the audience feel the tension release by going from a loud
foreboding sound to a quiet gentle sound. Mrs. Brisby will save her children and everything will be all
right. The lighting also cues the audience in on when the danger has passed. Along with the music the
shots become increasingly low lighted. The light goes dim and gradually becomes darker with every
shot. Once the home had sunken all the way down the light on Mrs. Brisby fades. It is as if her very
life, her will and hope vanish at the presumed loss of her children. The lighting shows the audience
what she feels: sadness, hopelessness, despire and lost. When she uses the stone and its magic the shot
is abruptly interrupted by rays of bright light, turning the scene from low key lighting to high key
lighting. The light is Mrs. Brisby s bravery, returning her hope and allowing her the will to save her
family. It is that beam of light that inspires hope in Mrs. Brisby and she uses it to pull her home from
the mud. It is when she faces the darkest times that her bravery shines the brightest, both visually and

Disadvantages Of Service Oriented Architecture
!!!Definitions
!!What is a Microservice?
Microservices are a method of designing software applications in which the application components
are divided into small independent processes called Microservices which communicate with each
other using API to form a complete application.
!!What is Service Oriented Architecture(SOA)?
With Service Oriented Architecture a communication protocol is used to make public, platform
independent services available to any application or user that needs them. SOAs provide services to
components that may involve simple data passing routines or connect to another service or carry out
some small functions.
!!What is an Application Programming Interface (API)?
It is an interface. It is in between two different applications, allowing them to communicate. An
application programming interface is therefore defines as an application that allows two pieces of
software to communicate with each other.
!!!Microservices, SOAs and APIs Illustrated: The Nightclub Application
These definitions make room for a broad spectrum of interpretations. We are going to use an
illustration to make the definitions more relatable. Let us for a minute imagine we have a night club

Microservices are way of structuring an application into small independent components that comprise
the application as whole. This makes the application more scalable and more agile. So in effect
Microservices have to do with the breaking down of an application into components while APIs
function is to expose the functional characteristics of an application. With SOAs they are another form
of architectural approach to application development and serve to expose the functionality of an
application by an independent service. These services are designed for re use in various

American Laws And The Lgbtq Community
American Laws and the LGBTQ+ Community Discrimination [dih skrim uh ney shuh n]: treatment or
consideration of, or making a distinction in favor of or against, a person or thing based on the group,
class, or category to which that person or thing belongs rather than on individual merit. Right from the
dictionary, the definition is clear. Look back 95 years to 1920, where women across America raised
their voices and fought back for the right to vote. Now take a look back 48 years ago when in 1967,
interracial marriage was finally legalized. These were all monumental events fighting against
discrimination. However, the definition is still blurring in minds of some across America as a
multitude of bills are being passed permitting people to act with bigotry towards members of the
LGBTQ+ community, the Religious Freedom Restoration Acts just being one of them. In discussions
of bills such as the Religious Freedom Restoration Acts, or RFRA s, one controversial issue has been
whether or not they permit discrimination. On one hand, those supporting the laws argue that they
only reinforce the free practice of religion. On the other hand, those against them contend that with
their vagueness it plays out as disguising legal discrimination. My own view is that the RFRA s and
other anti LGBTQ+ laws should be repealed or at the very least backed with a state wide non
discrimination law for LGBTQ+ individuals. This is in order to prevent a large amount of service
being denied to LGBTQ+

The Teachings Of The Gospel
Culture is the behavior and beliefs as well as characteristics of a particular social, ethnic, or age group.
(Dictionary.com) The gospel, in sum is the teachings of Christ and the record of his life found in the
first four books of the new testament. An age long struggle, since the Gospel message began to spread
has been the issue of evangelizing to various cultures and presenting the Gospel in a way relevant to
the people. This is the struggle that many missionaries face who work in the fields amongst various
indigenous and foreign cultures that carry practices that are strictly against the Gospel. In proclaiming
the Gospel, missionaries should respond to the individual elements of other cultures in various ways.
Condemnation of Culture Missionaries must require the local people to separate from practices which
are prohibited in Scripture such as idolatry, cannibalism, and so forth. Toleration of Culture
Missionaries will also teach against certain practices which violate Christian ideals, although
temporarily tolerate them while waiting for the development of a more sensitive conscience on the
part of the local people, such as slavery or scarification of the body (when done for
ornamentation).Conversion of Culture Missionaries may retain certain local patterns and practices
while giving them a new content, meaning or purpose introducing functional substitutes in order to
avoid creating a cultural vacuum in the lives of the believers and churches for example, using

Google s Legal And Ethical Controversy
Defining Google s Legal and Ethical Controversy
Just Google it a saying that has become an integral part of everyday vocabulary. The worlds most
popular search engine can provide people, worldwide with access to information that otherwise would
not be available. Whether you re looking to find pictures of the Holi celebration in India or find a local
NYC eatery where you can have brunch, with just a click of a button, Google always has an answer.
Despite the greatness that Google has brought to the world, on April 15, 2015 the European Union
filed an Antitrust lawsuit against Google. The European Commission addresses four main areas of
concern in Google s operation: potential bias in Google s search results, scraping content from rival
websites, agreements with advertisers that may exclude rival search advertising services and contracts
that limit marketers from using other platforms . I feel that Google has the legal right to favor its own
search results over its competitors and that it is ethical for Google to use its dominance of the search
engine market to its advantage.
Situation Analysis
Google is a technology company operating on a global level. It employs 32,000 employees and
generates annual revenues of about $38 billion .
Google first came underfire for unfair competition concerns in the U.S. during 20132. Before the FTC

The Atomic Weight Of The Unknown Barium Carbonate
In this lab experiment, an unknown metal carbonate went through a chemical reaction with 1.0 M
barium chloride, forming products of barium carbonate and an alkali metal chloride. The unknown
alkali metal carbonate also went through a chemical reaction with 1 M hydrochloric acid, forming an
alkali metal chloride, with liquid water, and carbon dioxide gas as products. A final flame test was
done to reveal what the unknown alkali metal was. Once all molar masses were calculated, the masses
were extremely varied, ranging from 37.061 grams per mol to 133.110 grams per mol. When the flame
test was performed, yellow orange colored flames appeared, revealing that the unknown alkali metal
carbonate was sodium carbonate.
The purpose of this experiment was to use different type of tests to determine the atomic weight for
the unknown alkali metal carbonate along with determining which alkali metal it is. The first test
consisted of reacting the aqueous metal carbonate with barium chloride in a precipitation reaction [1
M2(CO3) + 1 BaCl2 → 1 Ba(CO3) + 2 MCl]. The product of this reaction is barium carbonate, which
is isolated and later weighed by using filter paper and a Buchner funnel with vacuum filtration. When
weighed, the barium carbonate can be converted to moles of the unknown carbonate and grams per
mol of the unknown alkali metal carbonate can be calculated. The second reaction consisted of
reacting the unknown carbonate (a base) with hydrochloric acid (an acid) to form

poverty and sanitation. Multiple complications arise when 638 million people open defecate and 122

85% of healthcare is private sector, which makes it unreachable by the majority of the public (Indian

Giulio Romano s Fall Of The Giants
Giulio Romano uses illusionism in his painting called Fall of the Giants. It depicts the battle of the
gods against and the giants in Greek mythology. We can see that the gods are in the clouds of Mount
Olympus, and they look very peaceful. On the other hand, there s a chaotic scene below them with the
giants trampling one another along with the falling infrastructures. Illusionism plays a significant role
in this painting as it looks very real. This artwork is a type of trompe l oeil, which means fool the eye ,
because two dimensional art works like Romano s work looks three dimensional. In addition, this type
of illusionism is called trickery as the art works appear real due to the extensive details in them. For

Art and science coincides in that the perspective of the artist is significant in the artwork that they
create. Gunther von Hagens is a German medical scientist that uses a technique called plastination.
This is the process in which the body is preserved after death, and Von Hagen s arranged them in
different poses to show the human anatomy. One example is seen in figure 4.65, which shows a
basketball player dribbling a ball. The artwork shows how the muscles and bones work together to
make movement, and we can also see the different structures very clearly. This includes the muscles,
tendons, ligaments, bones, and the brain. As a biology major, I think this is very interesting, and I didn
t know that there was an artwork such as this type. I think in general, it s helpful to see the different
poses to get an idea of how the body works. It is certainly a controversial type of artwork, but the
meaning is still there. It displays the human body in ways that normal people usually don t think
about. It allows us to better understand the human body and its functions. Moreover, the exhibit also
emphasizes the importance of a healthy life style. For example, one of their exhibits display a body
with damaged lungs of a smoker. This artwork could have a major impact on society, because it shows
the consequences of smoking and how it affects our body. In my opinion, this exemplifies

I shall start at the beginning. Lenore Van Natta was the most giving individual you could ever find.
She gave so much to everyone and never expected anything in return. Her doors were always open to

She told stories that began to have new meaning when she told them for the last time. They felt deeper
and drive themselves further into my heart where they still reside. Nana then went on to explain how
she was sick of fighting and her one wish was for us to just let her go peacefully. At the time I was so
angered by her selfishness. How could she give up when my aunt had another baby on the way. A
baby that would never know her grandmother. A baby who would never know the warmth of her hugs.
I begged her to stay. I cried at her side begging her to stay so we could make more memories like the
ones that she had just told. She refused and told me to stay strong with a smile that I took the wrong
way. I was so angry at her. How could she abandon her family? How could she be so greedy to do
this? I told her I loved her and walked out of the room in a rage and when I got to the hallway I
collapsed in an immense rush of emotions. This competes for the lowest part of my life. I sobbed on
the floor and didn t care who saw me or when a kind nurse tried to help me up. I was frozen in anguish

The Importance Of Superstitions In Sports
One doesn t acquire superstitions, curses, or obsession out of nowhere towards a sports team. It s
something that s involuntarily part of someone when they participate in these gatherings with other
sports fans. Having a passion specifically for a team could get a crowd riled up, so when they begin to
lose, people try to generalize what could have caused the circumstance.
Fear of one s team being in a losing streak, who never seem to win, sports fans try to hold on to a
sense of hope and something to believe in that could explain the reasoning as to why they haven t won
for a period of time. However, there is no logical evidence that superstitious or curses are the cause of
a team lost in a game.
Being a fan of a sports team, specifically baseball, could result in being prone to believing the curses
or superstitious that comes with the team when they have lost. People are always trying to fill in the
gaps of what could cause such a loss, and when they can t find a legitimate reason they direct their
attention to superstition. Many attribute it to events that occurred earlier that could be the cause of a
team losing, even though the event could have no relation to the outcome of the game. Before the
Chicago Cubs won the World Series in 2016, ending the 108 year old drought that began in 1908, a
curse began to surface called the Curse of the Billy Goat. When a Cubs fan was ejected from Wrigley

Work Addiction Research Papers
The days of the regular 9 to 5 workday, 40 hour week and relaxing vacations have all but gone by the
wayside. Today, they have more often than not been replaced by workdays with no set timeframe, a
workweek consisting of up to 60 hours or more and vacations that are for the most part nonexistent.
With such extreme changes in modern work habits, things such as relationships, health and lifestyles
suffer. Sadly, this disorder is not new to researchers nor is it as small as a problem as most people
think it is. People that worked harder and longer than needed were considered ideal employees in the

found that even those with no jobs also suffer from such an affliction. According to many researchers
studying today s work epidemic, it has been estimated that the majority of people with this problem
have come from such situations as dysfunctional families and alcoholic parent(s). The cause for this
stems from not being able to control situations that were not controllable. Work addiction is
considered an attempt to control a situation in which they cannot control. Other researchers have
found that the sudden increase of workaholism is stemmed from recent economic pressures. People
think that by working harder and logging longer hours is a viable way of keeping a job in such harsh
economic times. During a recent study by Saul Robinson, a psychotherapist and professor at the

The High Cost Of Manliness By Jensen Summary
The High Cost of Manliness
1. Jensen sees the negative consequences of masculinity as men taking advantage of their manliness.
Some men show their manliness in a negative way, like being violent to achieve their desires rather
than looking for other ways to compromise. They like being in control and taking charge rather than
understanding and deciding on an agreement. It can sometimes be threatening to women and make
them feel powerless.
2. In paragraph 10 and 11, Jensen talks about many differences between men and women one of which

Jensen does not provide sufficient evidence to support his point. According to paragraph 5, Jensen
indicates that violence and rivalry are the characteristics in businessmen, athletes, and veterans but in
the United States this applies to mostly all men. He is trying to say that not all men think of
masculinity as violence yet he only gives examples of men who do.
4. From the phrase recurring intellectual fad Jensen is trying to say that the different behavior we
adapt from different cultures and groups effect why men and women are so different. It adds to his
argument that the reason why men and women are so different are because of the political system.
5. I think Brent Staples would agree that toxic Masculinity results from a political system that contrast
men against women. According to black men and public space, staples admits that there are many
stereotypes about black men. People think that every black man is a criminal or a burglar. In black

Today, the fashion industry is pumping out thousands of...
Today, the fashion industry is pumping out thousands of fur coats for prospective buyers. The attempt
of masking the true price of retrieving that fur by glamorizing coats is beyond most buyer s attention.
Some people know that animals go through pain when their fur is taken for the purpose of fashion, but
most people do not understand the extent of the mutilation they go through. To be sure the fur is fresh
and neat, certain animals are sometimes skinned alive. Fur farming is not only inhumane, but it also
has a negative effect on nature. Fur farming is bad for the environment, brutal to animals and the
animals are also inhumanely killed. According to psychological theory, the humanistic view claims
that every person has good in them. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
To catch the animals, the farmers use a device called a leg hold trap. A study in Wheeler Nation
Wildlife Refuge discovered that 26% of animals would actually attempt to bite of their limbs in order
to escape one of these traps in the hopes of survival ( Ranch Fur Cruelties ). The fact that animals are
willing to chew of their body parts in order to escape means that the leg hold trap must be painful
towards the animals, which means it is an inhumane way of capturing an animal. Fur farming has been
around for many years, but not always for the poor purpose of fashion. Although there are countless
disadvantages with fur farming, many individuals are blinded by the glamour of the fur fashion
industry to see that. One of the most crucial issues is how badly fur farming effects the environment
which is almost always a victim of a human s doing.
Effecting the environment has been a common issue that seems to keep resurfacing all over the world.
While raw animal fur pelts may be biodegradable, the fur industry conveniently neglects to mention
the fact that all of the animal skins used to make fur go through a tanning process ( Nothing Humane
about Fur Farms ). Tanning is a process that uses environmentally damaging toxins such as
formaldehydes and strong acids. These chemicals are a danger to the atmosphere, helping destroy the
environment which is already being damaged by other human made things such as carbon dioxide
from cars or grime from nuclear plants. The

Hunger Of Memory Richard Rodriguez
Richard Rodriguez, the author of Hunger of Memory, is a Mexican man who rose above prejudices to
become a distinguished member of society through education. Sherman Alexie, the author of
Superman and Me, is a Native American man who grew up on an Indian reservation with a love of
books and a penchant for learning in an attempt to exceed further than the predetermined path set in
front of him. Rodriguez perceives education as something that has built a division between him and
his family but allowed for assimilation into American life and achieve more than the initial
expectations of him, meanwhile, Alexie, who remains close to his family and defied all odds,
perceives education as a life saving tool that could potentially change ... Show more content on

The author, being an educated man, is against these programs because he believes success is attainable
without added help. Rodriguez was a socially disadvantaged child as he put it; however, he
accomplished everything without help, and believes through dedication achieving whatever you wish
is possible. At the end of the excerpt, the author mentions a Mexican maid. He ponders on the
circumstances which have separated their staunchly different lives. For Rodriguez education has
Carried me far, whether it is for better or worse.
The non Indians and Indians alike alienated young Alexie at school. In order to conform to subservient
expectations, smart Indian children were bullied into not actively talking or participating in class
further emphasizing Indian children who were expected to be stupid (Alexie). Teachers would ignore
the peer pressuring and bullying happening around them. Because the non Indians actively denied the
Indian kids of participating in school, they could not assimilate. Despite the persistence of non Indians
and Indians to deny Alexie the right to learn, he persevered and overcame adversity. His father

Marae
They ask what are the values of a Marae? And we think the values or significance of a Maori is based
around people, rituals, spirituality and respect, but before we go any further then that we are to ask
ourselves another question. What is a Marae? The Marae is a meeting place which consists of a carved
meeting house (wharenui), a dining hall (whare kai), there is also the marae atea (the scared space
which is located at the front of the meeting house). The Marae is a symbol of tribal identity, and
security (being/feeling safe). The Marae is a meeting place where you can discuss problems or debate
what you have on your mind, and is considered by Maori as a turangawaewae (which is a standing
place, a place of belonging). In the Marae it ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
People have privileges and obligations to a certain place because of their links through their parents
and their ancestors. Your tūrangawaewae gives you a home base on a marae. It gives you the right to
speak as tangata whenua on that marae. Doing this would create an obligation to listen on the part of
those who are seated. Whanaungatanga means kinship ties. People who belong to a particular marae
trace their whakapapa to that marae and to the ancestors it represents. They have the right to stand and
speak, and the obligation to look after and maintain the marae and uphold its mana. Whanaungatanga
is extended to include manuhiri when they stay on a marae. This is demonstrated when a person
addresses everyone who is staying on a marae as family when they say Kia ora e te whānau
(Greetings, family). Manaakitanga means to care for a person s mana (well being, in a holistic sense).
On a marae, it is often claimed that it is not what is said that matters but how people are looked after.
This is the essence of manaakitanga. Manaakitanga also includes the respect we give to elders. Our
elders are responsible for the manaakitanga (care) of the entire group connected to a marae. The
manaakitanga they give is based on their knowledge, life experience, and wisdom. Outside, in front of
the whare and at it s top is a tekoteko , or carved figure, which is placed on the roof and at the entrance
to the whare. It represents the ancestor s head. The maihi , or carved

The Crucial Role Of The Rehabilitation Of Criminals In...
It has been noticed that a lot of criminals after finishing their imprisonment time tend to continue
committing crimes as before and turn to be repeated offenders .Investigations should be done to know
the causes.Preventive and corrective measures should take place.
Ignoring the rehabilitation of the prisoners while being in jail is one of the main causes of that
attitude.Authorities in the prison are convinced that keeping the criminals isolated from the
community for a specific time as a punishment is enough and do not pay attention to the crucial role of
the rehabilitation process.
In addition, community members refuse these released individuals .Being rejected and suffering from

The Effect Of Preferential Trade Agreement On The Trade Of...
Introduction
This paper will aim to examine the effect of the engagement in preferential trade arrangement on the
trade of Paraguay. Preferential trade agreements (PTAs) have become a prevalent tool for regional
economic collaboration. Despite its recognition and popularity, however, many economists are still
skeptical of the effectiveness of PTAs. Preferential trade agreements (PTAs) are critical parts of the
world s current multidimensional trading system. The agreements allow nations to engage in regional
or exclusive free trade cooperation. When countries are engaged in a PTA, they jointly allow
preferential access on goods and services under the agreement to each other. PTAs introduce a new
aspect of international trade for World ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Under this accord, the four countries decided to remove custom duties, and implement a CET, or a
common external tariff of 35% on certain imports from outside the bloc, and adopt a common trade
policy toward outside countries and blocs. According the Council of Foreign Relations article, as a
result of this treaty, trade within the bloc jumped from $4 billion in 1990 to more than $40 billion in
2000 .
Source: UNCTAD
As shown above, regional integration slowed down. This was due to many factors which included the
devaluation of Brazil s currency in 1999 and also Argentina s financial crisis in 2001. Since that year,
trade disputes and other tensions flared between both Argentina and Brazil (Felter, 2017).
The empirical study assessed, which is a paper by Ornelas, Freund, and Estevaderodal (2008) that
studies the effects of PTAs on multilateral liberalization, focusing on Mercosur from 1990 to 2001.
They use the change in MFN external tariffs as their standard measurement (Estevadeordal, Antoni, et
al, 2008). In their empirical model, the change in external tariffs acted as the dependent variable; on
the other hand, the main independent variable is the change in preferential tariffs. In their study, they
included trade share as an additional variable as an indicator of relative importance of preferential
imports. In conclusion, results from their regression showed that Mercosur has been a crucial building
bloc to free trade

Foreign Service Officer For Citizenship And Immigration...
For as long as I can remember, I have always wanted a career that would continually broaden my
horizons and benefit society at large. I am interested in a career as a Foreign Service Officer for
Citizenship and Immigration Canada (CIC) because of the international scope and dynamism of its
long term career path as well as the opportunity to contribute to Canadian society as a member of the
public service. Although these aspects of the career appeal to me, I also recognize them as the two
most challenging aspects of working as a Foreign Service Officer. First, the prospect of moving from
posting to posting, while exciting, would require me to constantly adapt to new environments and
make adjustments in personal affairs. Second, a career in public service requires me to serve as a non
partisan agent and to carry out policies that I may or may not agree with, which can present
demoralizing situations throughout the lifetime of my career. Despite these challenges, I am confident
that I can use the passion and interest that I possess for the work of a Foreign Service Officer to derive
satisfaction in such a career. My interest in a career as a Foreign Service Officer with CIC is rooted in
my desire for work that is both exciting and beneficial to society at large. There is extensive travelling
involved in a Foreign Service career with CIC, often to places that are radically different from Canada.
This would serve to broaden my own personal understanding of the human condition

Flesh Market by Nicola Morgan
Fleshmarket
By Nicola Morgan
The theme of obsession is important in the novel Fleshmarket by Nicola Morgan.
Fleshmarket is set in Edinburgh in 1828. Two of the main characters are Robbie and Essie who are
brother and sister. They live in an awful, poverty stricken environment in the old town after everything
changed when their mother died at the hands of Doctor Robert Knox. Robbie Blames Knox for his
horrible life and suffering as he believes Knox has not suffered yet and he took away the good life
Robbie nearly had before Knox operated on his mum and this leads to his deep obsession with Knox.

Robbie is appalled when he breaks into surgeons square and finds some anatomy books and begins to
read them, each time he read the chilling description of an operation with its cold explanation of
gruesome techniques, his breath stuck in his throat and he wanted desperately not to read, but he could
not stop. His eyes were dragged along the lines. This tells us that Robbie thinks Knox and men like
him have no emotion or soul. Word choice (dragged) highlights Robbie s obsession with anatomy, as
if someone is making Robbie read the books.
Robbie s obsession leads him to spend a night in the Canongate Toolbooth as he gets caught in the
surgeon s library Robbie turned his face towards the wall and dragged his parched tongue against the
dripping stones. And as he drank he cried. This incident highlights how low Robbie has sunk; he is so
desperate that he is doing the same as a mad man.
While Robbie is in jail he is bewildered as to why he s let the obsession with Knox overcome him His
sense powerlessness was overwhelming. It rose in his chest and he screwed up his eyes against it.
What have I done? What has Doctor Knox made me become? This shows us that Robbie blames his
predicament on Knox when actually it is his own actions that have caused him to end up in jail he
feels once again that Knox has all the power.
Robbie goes to Joseph s house and feels he can talk to him about God what sort of Goes would take

Design Strategy For A Skywalk At The Royal Oak Campus
ABSTRACT The design strategy for a skywalk at the Royal Oak Campus entails the use of ramps and
steps rising to 5 meters and ramps having a gradient of 1:10.The skywalk will link the faculty parking
and the college with a 3metres wide ramp,5 meters wide steps and a slab width of 6500 meters
500metres above the ground level with a building line on each side of 6 meters. Pedestrians and
cyclists will use the proposed Skywalk it will be situated to allow pedestrians to cross Washington
Avenue because there are no nearby roads to necessitate a road for access. This will let pedestrians
cross safely without slowing down the traffic. Upon the approval of the design proposal, our architect
designed a skywalk for Washington Avenue. The designer worked on this project over the course of
seven weeks. The architect interviewed ten people on the preferred features of the proposed skywalk.
A survey was also undertaken on the zoning information for the city of Washington in order to
determine the maximum garage size possible. The plan designer compiled the clients information as
well as the zoning information to determine the actual size of the parking lot, designed the floor plan
and completed the report. The recommended design for the skywalk, which is a modification of the
design found at http://www.aardvark house plans.com. The design provides ample space for
pedestrians to walk through. The skywalk features a two sided walk that can accommodate light traffic
of bicycles and

Ice in space may break out the bubbly. Zapping simulated space ice with imitation starlight makes the
ice bubble like champagne. If this happens in space, this liquidlike behavior could help organic
molecules form at the edges of infant planetary systems. The experiment provides a peek into the
possible origins of life.
Shogo Tachibana of Hokkaido University in Sapporo, Japan, and colleagues combined water,
methanol and ammonia, all found in comets and interstellar clouds where stars form, at a temperature
between ‒263° Celsius and ‒258° C. The team then exposed this newly formed ice to ultraviolet
radiation to mimic the light of a young star.
As the ice warmed to ‒213° C, it cracked like a brittle solid. But at just five degrees warmer, ... Show

That suggests that the bubbles are made of hydrogen that the ultraviolet light split off methane and
ammonia molecules, Tachibana says. It is like bubbling in champagne, he says with an exception.
Champagne bubbles are dissolved carbon dioxide, while ice bubbles are dissolved hydrogen.
Story continues after video
TOIL AND TROUBLE This video inside a super chilled (about ‒145° Celsius) chamber shows
bubbles forming and popping in irradiated ice. The experimental apparatus is known as PICACHU, or
Photochemistry in Interstellar Cloud for Astro Chronicle in Hokkaido University. S. TACHIBANA ET
AL/SCI. ADV. 2017
The irradiated ice took on another liquidlike feature: Between about ‒185° C and ‒161° C, it flowed
like refrigerated honey, despite being well below its melting temperature, Tachibana adds.
That liquidity could help kick start life building chemistry. In 2016, Cornelia Meinert of the University
Nice Sophia Antipolis in France and colleagues showed that irradiated ice forms a cornucopia of
molecules essential to life, including ribose, the backbone of RNA, which may have been a precursor
to DNA (SN: 4/30/16, p. 18). But it was not clear how smaller molecules could have found each other
and built ribose in rigid

Jewish Resistance Essay
Resistance, in many ways, was almost impossible for Jewish people. It was also extremely difficult for
citizens in the Nazi controlled countries. There was very little access to weapons. The Germans also
made extremely hard to move about freely. Furthermore, open conflict was not a successful
alternative, as it most often resulted in death. However this did not stop the Jewish people in fighting
for their lives. Resistance took many forms. For some simply living their normal life by going to
secret schools or hidden Synagogues was a form of resiting the Nazis anti Semitic regime. For other
resistance took a violent form, which could range fro simple self defence to planned attacks on the
German Nazi Party. Could the Jews have done more and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
There is definitely more the Jewish people could have done in order to resist against the Nazi regime.
However it is very unlikely that they could have significantly affected the Nazi soldiers enough to
force change. A total of about 12.5 million soldiers fought for the German army during WW2. Even
the amount of total Jews living in Europe (8 million) does not come close to the number of enlisted
German soldiers. This meant that even if the Jews made more efforts in resisting the Germans it would
still likely be very ineffective. However resisting was still a very courageous effort that helped many
Hews survive and gave all Jews a small sense of hope. Almost 60% of the Jewish population was
brutally slaughtered during WW2 although if it was not for the numerous attempts in resisting the
Germans this number could have been far greater. When thinking about Resistance during the
Holocaust we should not dwell on how little or insignificant it might appear to have been. We should
give credit to the Jewish people given the circumstances they faced. It was amazing that any act of
resistance occurred at all. The acts of resistance performed by the Jews should be greatly admired as
they made great efforts against the odds. However some people tend to overlook these achievement
due to the sheer amount of deaths to the Jewish

  • 2. Synthesis And Characterization Of Aspirin Organic Chemistry 322 Lab Report Part I. Synthesis and Characterization of Aspirin Part II. Extraction of Natural Products Name: Bianca Davis Instructor: Dr. Russell Date Submitted: December 8, 2014 Introduction Aspirin is a substance known as acetylsalicylic acid. It is used mainly as an over the counter drug used to relieve inflammation, pain, and fever. Its natural form is salicylic acid. This synthesis process requires the acetylation of salicylic acid with acetic anhydride. The purpose of this lab is to synthesize and purify aspirin. We also characterized the aspirin via melting point, iron (III) chloride test, pH test, and thin layer chromatography. The synthesized aspirin successfully produced a 65.38% yield. The contents were then gently swirled and transported to the hot water bath created earlier. The heat from the water bath and occasional mixing of the contents quickly dissolved the powder contents. The flask was then removed and combined with 40mL of cold distilled water. The flask was then placed into an ice bath to create a slush like substance. The story is centered around a widowed mouse, Mrs. Brisby, who s child has fallen ill. Timmy, one of her children, has fallen ill with ammonia and cannot be moved until he recovers. This is a problem through because it s almost time for the farmer to begin plowing the fields. If the family does not move they will be killed by the tractor. The tension and emotion of this film is excellently enhanced by the lighting, music, shot length and color of each scene. Early on it is plain to see what Mrs. Brisby s goals are, she wishes to protect her children. The harsh reality of their world starts with the inciting incident: moving day. Moving day is ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The music increases in tempo and becomes louder in order to raise tension. Time is running out as her home begins to sink. The tempo of the music acts as a clock, ticking away the time Mrs. Brisby and the rats have to save the children. It mimics her own heart beat as she becomes fearful for their lives. Once she uses the magic of the stone the music goes from being a terrible thunder to a voice of triumph. The change in music makes the audience feel the tension release by going from a loud foreboding sound to a quiet gentle sound. Mrs. Brisby will save her children and everything will be all right. The lighting also cues the audience in on when the danger has passed. Along with the music the shots become increasingly low lighted. The light goes dim and gradually becomes darker with every shot. Once the home had sunken all the way down the light on Mrs. Brisby fades. It is as if her very life, her will and hope vanish at the presumed loss of her children. The lighting shows the audience what she feels: sadness, hopelessness, despire and lost. When she uses the stone and its magic the shot is abruptly interrupted by rays of bright light, turning the scene from low key lighting to high key lighting. The light is Mrs. Brisby s bravery, returning her hope and allowing her the will to save her family. It is that beam of light that inspires hope in Mrs. Brisby and she uses it to pull her home from the mud. It is when she faces the darkest times that her bravery shines the brightest, both visually and ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 5. American Laws And The Lgbtq Community American Laws and the LGBTQ+ Community Discrimination [dih skrim uh ney shuh n]: treatment or consideration of, or making a distinction in favor of or against, a person or thing based on the group, class, or category to which that person or thing belongs rather than on individual merit. Right from the dictionary, the definition is clear. Look back 95 years to 1920, where women across America raised their voices and fought back for the right to vote. Now take a look back 48 years ago when in 1967, interracial marriage was finally legalized. These were all monumental events fighting against discrimination. However, the definition is still blurring in minds of some across America as a multitude of bills are being passed permitting people to act with bigotry towards members of the LGBTQ+ community, the Religious Freedom Restoration Acts just being one of them. In discussions of bills such as the Religious Freedom Restoration Acts, or RFRA s, one controversial issue has been whether or not they permit discrimination. On one hand, those supporting the laws argue that they only reinforce the free practice of religion. On the other hand, those against them contend that with their vagueness it plays out as disguising legal discrimination. My own view is that the RFRA s and other anti LGBTQ+ laws should be repealed or at the very least backed with a state wide non discrimination law for LGBTQ+ individuals. This is in order to prevent a large amount of service being denied to LGBTQ+ ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

This is the struggle that many missionaries face who work in the fields amongst various indigenous and foreign cultures that carry practices that are strictly against the Gospel. In proclaiming the Gospel, missionaries should respond to the individual elements of other cultures in various ways. The Atomic Weight Of The Unknown Barium Carbonate In this lab experiment, an unknown metal carbonate went through a chemical reaction with 1.0 M barium chloride, forming products of barium carbonate and an alkali metal chloride. The unknown alkali metal carbonate also went through a chemical reaction with 1 M hydrochloric acid, forming an alkali metal chloride, with liquid water, and carbon dioxide gas as products. A final flame test was done to reveal what the unknown alkali metal was. Once all molar masses were calculated, the masses were extremely varied, ranging from 37.061 grams per mol to 133.110 grams per mol. When the flame test was performed, yellow orange colored flames appeared, revealing that the unknown alkali metal carbonate was sodium carbonate. The purpose of this experiment was to use different type of tests to determine the atomic weight for the unknown alkali metal carbonate along with determining which alkali metal it is. The first test consisted of reacting the aqueous metal carbonate with barium chloride in a precipitation reaction [1 M2(CO3) + 1 BaCl2 → 1 Ba(CO3) + 2 MCl]. The product of this reaction is barium carbonate, which is isolated and later weighed by using filter paper and a Buchner funnel with vacuum filtration. When weighed, the barium carbonate can be converted to moles of the unknown carbonate and grams per mol of the unknown alkali metal carbonate can be calculated. It s something that s involuntarily part of someone when they participate in these gatherings with other sports fans. Having a passion specifically for a team could get a crowd riled up, so when they begin to lose, people try to generalize what could have caused the circumstance. Fear of one s team being in a losing streak, who never seem to win, sports fans try to hold on to a sense of hope and something to believe in that could explain the reasoning as to why they haven t won for a period of time. However, there is no logical evidence that superstitious or curses are the cause of a team lost in a game. Being a fan of a sports team, specifically baseball, could result in being prone to believing the curses or superstitious that comes with the team when they have lost. People are always trying to fill in the gaps of what could cause such a loss, and when they can t find a legitimate reason they direct their attention to superstition. Many attribute it to events that occurred earlier that could be the cause of a team losing, even though the event could have no relation to the outcome of the game. Some men show their manliness in a negative way, like being violent to achieve their desires rather than looking for other ways to compromise. They like being in control and taking charge rather than understanding and deciding on an agreement. It can sometimes be threatening to women and make them feel powerless. 2. In paragraph 10 and 11, Jensen talks about many differences between men and women one of which is their physical differences. Their body mass index differentiates and so does their hormones. A man would have more muscle so they tend to be way stronger than a woman. They also have varying levels of different hormones. • 22. Today, the fashion industry is pumping out thousands of... Today, the fashion industry is pumping out thousands of fur coats for prospective buyers. The attempt of masking the true price of retrieving that fur by glamorizing coats is beyond most buyer s attention. Some people know that animals go through pain when their fur is taken for the purpose of fashion, but most people do not understand the extent of the mutilation they go through. To be sure the fur is fresh and neat, certain animals are sometimes skinned alive. Fur farming is not only inhumane, but it also has a negative effect on nature. Fur farming is bad for the environment, brutal to animals and the animals are also inhumanely killed. According to psychological theory, the humanistic view claims that every person has good in them. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... To catch the animals, the farmers use a device called a leg hold trap. A study in Wheeler Nation Wildlife Refuge discovered that 26% of animals would actually attempt to bite of their limbs in order to escape one of these traps in the hopes of survival ( Ranch Fur Cruelties ). The fact that animals are willing to chew of their body parts in order to escape means that the leg hold trap must be painful towards the animals, which means it is an inhumane way of capturing an animal. Fur farming has been around for many years, but not always for the poor purpose of fashion. Although there are countless disadvantages with fur farming, many individuals are blinded by the glamour of the fur fashion industry to see that. One of the most crucial issues is how badly fur farming effects the environment which is almost always a victim of a human s doing. Effecting the environment has been a common issue that seems to keep resurfacing all over the world. While raw animal fur pelts may be biodegradable, the fur industry conveniently neglects to mention the fact that all of the animal skins used to make fur go through a tanning process ( Nothing Humane about Fur Farms ). Tanning is a process that uses environmentally damaging toxins such as formaldehydes and strong acids. These chemicals are a danger to the atmosphere, helping destroy the environment which is already being damaged by other human made things such as carbon dioxide from cars or grime from nuclear plants. And we think the values or significance of a Maori is based around people, rituals, spirituality and respect, but before we go any further then that we are to ask ourselves another question. What is a Marae? The Marae is a meeting place which consists of a carved meeting house (wharenui), a dining hall (whare kai), there is also the marae atea (the scared space which is located at the front of the meeting house). The Marae is a symbol of tribal identity, and security (being/feeling safe). Your tūrangawaewae gives you a home base on a marae. It gives you the right to speak as tangata whenua on that marae. Doing this would create an obligation to listen on the part of those who are seated. Whanaungatanga means kinship ties. People who belong to a particular marae trace their whakapapa to that marae and to the ancestors it represents. They have the right to stand and speak, and the obligation to look after and maintain the marae and uphold its mana. Whanaungatanga is extended to include manuhiri when they stay on a marae. This is demonstrated when a person addresses everyone who is staying on a marae as family when they say Kia ora e te whānau (Greetings, family). Manaakitanga means to care for a person s mana (well being, in a holistic sense). On a marae, it is often claimed that it is not what is said that matters but how people are looked after. This is the essence of manaakitanga. Manaakitanga also includes the respect we give to elders. Our elders are responsible for the manaakitanga (care) of the entire group connected to a marae. The manaakitanga they give is based on their knowledge, life experience, and wisdom. Introduction This paper will aim to examine the effect of the engagement in preferential trade arrangement on the trade of Paraguay. Preferential trade agreements (PTAs) have become a prevalent tool for regional economic collaboration. Despite its recognition and popularity, however, many economists are still skeptical of the effectiveness of PTAs. Preferential trade agreements (PTAs) are critical parts of the world s current multidimensional trading system. The agreements allow nations to engage in regional or exclusive free trade cooperation. When countries are engaged in a PTA, they jointly allow preferential access on goods and services under the agreement to each other. PTAs introduce a new aspect of international trade for World ... According the Council of Foreign Relations article, as a result of this treaty, trade within the bloc jumped from $4 billion in 1990 to more than $40 billion in 2000 . Source: UNCTAD As shown above, regional integration slowed down. This was due to many factors which included the devaluation of Brazil s currency in 1999 and also Argentina s financial crisis in 2001. Since that year, trade disputes and other tensions flared between both Argentina and Brazil (Felter, 2017). The empirical study assessed, which is a paper by Ornelas, Freund, and Estevaderodal (2008) that studies the effects of PTAs on multilateral liberalization, focusing on Mercosur from 1990 to 2001. • 27. Foreign Service Officer For Citizenship And Immigration... For as long as I can remember, I have always wanted a career that would continually broaden my horizons and benefit society at large. I am interested in a career as a Foreign Service Officer for Citizenship and Immigration Canada (CIC) because of the international scope and dynamism of its long term career path as well as the opportunity to contribute to Canadian society as a member of the public service. Although these aspects of the career appeal to me, I also recognize them as the two most challenging aspects of working as a Foreign Service Officer. First, the prospect of moving from posting to posting, while exciting, would require me to constantly adapt to new environments and make adjustments in personal affairs. Second, a career in public service requires me to serve as a non partisan agent and to carry out policies that I may or may not agree with, which can present demoralizing situations throughout the lifetime of my career. Despite these challenges, I am confident that I can use the passion and interest that I possess for the work of a Foreign Service Officer to derive satisfaction in such a career. My interest in a career as a Foreign Service Officer with CIC is rooted in my desire for work that is both exciting and beneficial to society at large. There is extensive travelling involved in a Foreign Service career with CIC, often to places that are radically different from Canada. This would serve to broaden my own personal understanding of the human condition ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 29. Design Strategy For A Skywalk At The Royal Oak Campus ABSTRACT The design strategy for a skywalk at the Royal Oak Campus entails the use of ramps and steps rising to 5 meters and ramps having a gradient of 1:10.The skywalk will link the faculty parking and the college with a 3metres wide ramp,5 meters wide steps and a slab width of 6500 meters 500metres above the ground level with a building line on each side of 6 meters. Pedestrians and cyclists will use the proposed Skywalk it will be situated to allow pedestrians to cross Washington Avenue because there are no nearby roads to necessitate a road for access. This will let pedestrians cross safely without slowing down the traffic. Upon the approval of the design proposal, our architect designed a skywalk for Washington Avenue. The designer worked on this project over the course of seven weeks. The architect interviewed ten people on the preferred features of the proposed skywalk. A survey was also undertaken on the zoning information for the city of Washington in order to determine the maximum garage size possible. The plan designer compiled the clients information as well as the zoning information to determine the actual size of the parking lot, designed the floor plan and completed the report. If this happens in space, this liquidlike behavior could help organic molecules form at the edges of infant planetary systems. The experiment provides a peek into the possible origins of life. Shogo Tachibana of Hokkaido University in Sapporo, Japan, and colleagues combined water, methanol and ammonia, all found in comets and interstellar clouds where stars form, at a temperature between ‒263° Celsius and ‒258° C. The team then exposed this newly formed ice to ultraviolet radiation to mimic the light of a young star. As the ice warmed to ‒213° C, it cracked like a brittle solid. There was very little access to weapons. The Germans also made extremely hard to move about freely. Furthermore, open conflict was not a successful alternative, as it most often resulted in death. However this did not stop the Jewish people in fighting for their lives. Resistance took many forms. For some simply living their normal life by going to secret schools or hidden Synagogues was a form of resiting the Nazis anti Semitic regime. Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... There is definitely more the Jewish people could have done in order to resist against the Nazi regime. However it is very unlikely that they could have significantly affected the Nazi soldiers enough to force change. A total of about 12.5 million soldiers fought for the German army during WW2. Even the amount of total Jews living in Europe (8 million) does not come close to the number of enlisted German soldiers. This meant that even if the Jews made more efforts in resisting the Germans it would still likely be very ineffective. However resisting was still a very courageous effort that helped many Hews survive and gave all Jews a small sense of hope. Almost 60% of the Jewish population was brutally slaughtered during WW2 although if it was not for the numerous attempts in resisting the Germans this number could have been far greater. When thinking about Resistance during the Holocaust we should not dwell on how little or insignificant it might appear to have been. We should give credit to the Jewish people given the circumstances they faced. It was amazing that any act of resistance occurred at all.
