Presentation for Lilac 2013 This session was an exploration of the interlinked dynamics of shifting from resource-intensive face-to-face teaching to an approach where technology-enhanced information literacy learning was integrated within a module with a consequent reduction in contact hours for teaching. It considered what are the IL and pedagogic losses and gains from taking this approach: Is this a more sustainable and resilient way of developing IL across the curriculum?
Australian university teacher’s engagement with learning analytics: Still ea...Blackboard APAC
This session reports the results of a recent OLT-funded national exploratory study addressing the relevant factors and their impact when implementing learning analytics for student retention purposes. The project utilised a mixed-method research design and yielded a series of outputs, including the development of a non-technical overview of learning analytics, focusing on linking the fields of student retention and learning analytics resulting in an institution level survey focusing on sector readiness and decision making relating to utilising learning analytics for retention purposes. An academic level survey was administered to academic staff exploring their progress, aspirations and support needs relating to learning analytics. Follow-up interviews expanded on their experiences with learning analytics to date. An evidence-based framework was developed, mapping important factors affecting learning analytics decision making and implementation. This was illustrated by a suite of five case studies developed by each of the research partner institutions detailing their experiences with learning analytics and demonstrating why elements in the framework are important. These findings were shared and tested at a National Forum in April 2015.

It uses a cycle of problem discovery, cause identification, solution implementation and feedback (which may lead to a deeper level of problem identification), a positive spiral towards improvement.

This session will describe the use of MAP data to identify struggling 9th grade math learners as well as track their growth after intensive and innovative intervention. We will discuss the process of setting up this intervention class as well as the structure and practices used in our classroom. We will provide examples of practices to incorporate into any existing class as well as make a case to include a more intensive intervention option within your school. Administrators and teachers interested in making significant progress for all learners, as measured by NWEA’s MAP test, should attend.

Wayzata School District #284 is a suburban district in Minnesota that has been administering MAP for 10 years at the elementary and middle school level. We first started using the MAP tests at the high school three years ago. We use the philosophy of Madeline Hunter to guide our instructional planning and have recently placed a district-wide emphasis on the creation and implementation of Professional Learning Communities. Our team includes a high school associate principal and two high school math teachers.

8. So what can we learn from all of this?
• Don’t rush – gather all stakeholder input and go slowly when rolling out,
especially in elementary environments
• Get parents involved to help with early digital citizenship skills development
• Professional development should be timely, relevant, and frequent throughout
1:1 implementation, especially in the first year
• Let teachers review and advise on which apps to use
• Elevate teacher confidence with in-building tech support and coaching
• View and use the iPad as a tool for learning
• Find a balance between iPad time and other classroom activities
It is important to note that applications (apps) were not available to teachers at the BOY, and by the MOY, some apps were available, but the limited technology support staff was the only group allowed to add apps.
Testing may have also been a factor, especially at the EOY
Of the 20 teachers who commented on the EOY survey, all but three referenced the need for more time and training.
Statistically significant-teachers initially thought supervising students on iPads would not be difficult, then found it was due to lack of digital citizenship; teachers did not utilize apps-i.e. Class Dojo for classroom mgmt
Staci-K-2 went back to paper/pencil tests in some cases, so I removed the “assessment” comment in advantages. We may discuss that during the presentation.

Another cause of failure to effectively integrate technology into the classroom is the tendency in many districts toward “fast-tracking technology purchases without the meaningful involvement of classroom practitioners” (Surry & Farquhar, 1997; Walker, 2016, p. 44).
TPACK identifies what knowledge teachers need to teach effectively with a great deal of time and practice in implementing new strategies and gaining the skills and confidence they need to use them effectively.
