Group Counseling Reflection
I learned two significant things about group counseling in this course. The first thing that I learned is
the importance of setting up a treatment plan. The intention is to follow the client from their entrance
into the program until the client is discharged. In this process the clients problems are identified
through various assessments and as each problem is addressed, it is checked off of the list. Once all of
the problems are checked off of the list, the client is considered as having completed the plan. This
plan is especially important because it evokes thoughtful conversation between the client and the
counselor and is the best method to gain information from the client regarding the help they want to
receive. The second most significant thing that I learned about group counseling is how to design a
group from start to finish. From pre group design, planning the goals of the group and determining the
members to setting up the environment and structuring the sessions, each step adds its own important
components to designing group counseling. As a potential group leader I have learned a few things
about myself in terms of my interactions with the clients. I am patient with my clients because I
understand that it takes time for clients to build trust in the counselor and because it also takes time for
a client to accept their situation allowing them to move toward positive change. I am a good listener
because I realize that as a counselor, I have to allow my clients the

Sostratus Lighthouse
The most outstanding was the creation of Sostratus from Cnidus (III century BC) a sea lighthouse on
the island of Pharos near Alexandria, which was considered one of the Seven Wonders of the World (it
has not survived to our time). It is a three tier tower 120 m high: its base was square, the middle tier
had the shape of an octagon, and the upper tier was a round structure with statues that adorned it. At
the top of the lighthouse, equipped with metal mirrors, the fire was constantly maintained. The
lighthouse served as both an observation post and a fortress. The nature of the planning of Hellenistic
cities was distinguished by strict order. The straightforwardness of the sometimes wide streets, from
ten to four meters, in Pergamum and Priene), their crossing at a right angle, the location in the center

In order to protect the Hellenistic cities not only had powerful fortifications, but were sometimes
divided into quarters, with their own defensive walls. Sometimes for the safety of the rural population
cities were filled with an additional many kilometer ring of fortress walls. The acropolis was usually
located on the hills, providing the possibility of defense, as in Priene. The building materials were
used basically the same as in the classical era marble, limestone, wood, raw bricks, burned brick was
used more often. It is important to note that the engineering and construction essence of the structure
began to push aside the architectural and artistic image of the monument. The integrity and organic
content of the classical works were gradually lost, but the monuments began to influence more
emotionally and powerfully on greater number of people. Mostly, the order system was preserved, in
which, however, there was a tendency to mix different orders and their elements. The architecture of
residential buildings, palaces and villas were getting more

The Food Personalities Of Gender Expectations
After finishing an initial review of the shows, I identified common themes between the food
personalities in terms of gender expectations. From this sample, I identified five culinary personas:
homemaker, non traditional female, craftsman, explorer, and non traditional male (gastrosexual). Even
though these hosts had unique characteristics, the thematic presence of gender division between
domestic cooking and professional cooking underlined all the personalities. These identified attributes
for the most part do adhere to the traditional femininity and masculinity with some divergent
examples.
Persona Attributes
The traditionally female culinary persona portrays a woman s culinary authority lies in the domestic
kitchen. Although this study ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The emotion behind Drummond s cooking was reflected in the rest of women who fit this persona.
This emotion and placement in the domestic kitchen displays the traditional feminine characteristics of
emotionality and domesticity.
While Food Network presented only traditionally feminine personas in their programing, Cooking
Channel provided one female food personality who crossed traditional gender lines. Harry Eastwood,
British host of Sinful Sweets, explores and travels the United States finding bakeries and
confectionaries. As a culinary expert and accomplished chef, she casually discusses technical
knowledge of baking and often gives critical suggestions for how the dessert could be better. This
professional expertise separates her from the rest of female hosts because her professionalism and
absence from the domestic setting draws attention to her greater culinary authority than untrained
home cooks.
While Eastwood departs from the traditional female attributes, she highlights the attributes associated
with traditional masculinity. These personas represent professional culinary authorities whose
legitimacy stems from artistic experimentation and technical training. These personas find motivation
by sharing culinary knowledge and are associated with traditionally masculine occupations like
craftsman or explorer. Like the feminine personalities, the

Unaccompanied Asylum Seeking Children, Power Relationships...
Introduction This essay explores how unaccompanied asylum seeking children (UASC) are oppressed
in the UK. An unaccompanied asylum seeking child is a person under the age of eighteen who has left
their country of origin in order to seek refuge and is separated from both parents and are not being
cared for by an adult who, by law or custom has responsibility to do so (UNHCR, 1994:121). They are
therefore applying for asylum in their own right. Discrimination is the process of identifying that
someone is different and, due to this difference, treating them unfairly (Thompson, 2006). Xenoracism
is discrimination that is aimed at people specifically because they are from a different country, and are
therefore strangers (Sivanandan, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Power is the capacity to act in such a way as to control others (Harris, 1997:28). He argues that
everyone has at least some power, and that this power, for the relatively powerless, can be used to
influence the decisions of the dominant group. Unaccompanied asylum seeking children not disclosing
information can be seen as them exercising the little power they have. This can however have a
negative impact on their lives in the UK, for example, being placed under section 17 of the Children
Act instead of under section 20, which would offer the child more support. Foucault (1977) uses
discourse to relate to how language can be used to construct ideas and thoughts about groups.
Discourses and language can therefore help construct or reduce oppression (Thompson, 2006). If a
group has power, they have the ability and opportunity to fulfil or obstruct personal, relational, or
collective needs (Prilleltensky, 2008). If the dominant discourse of a less powerful group is positive,
the group with power may help that group fulfil their needs. If the dominant discourse of a less
powerful group is negative, such as with UASC, the powerful group may obstruct them in fulfilling
their needs, and therefore will cause oppression. Innes (2010) argues that the negative discourse of
asylum seekers as a threat to British society is portrayed in government literature

Rhetorical Analysis Of Barrack Obama s Met Barack Obama
July 27, 2004, was the night America met Barack Obama. This was the night that Obama, a member
of the Illinois Senate at the time, spoke as the keynote speaker at the Democratic National Convention.
Obama is widely known for his and grand speeches that bring tears of hope and joy to many
Americans eyes. To be able to produce such strong emotions, a speaker must put forth a speech that
has all aspects of The Rhetoric, Ethos, pathos, logos, and the five canons, as a well as use another
theory called Narrative Paradigm to register with the audience. Barrack Obama s 2004 DNC speech
become widely successful as it created hope and national unity throughout Americas with the help of
Obama s use of The Rhetoric and Narrative Paradigm Theory. The Rhetoric is a theory created by
Aristotle; can be defined by Aristotle himself as an ability, in each particular case, to see the available
means of persuasion . This theory holds three proofs to its name, ethos, pathos, and logos. The key to a
successful speech is holding all three of these proofs in the work. Ethos is the character and credibility
that the speaker holds. Pathos is what kind of emotional connection the speaker makes with the
audience. And Logos is how clear and rational the speaker s argument is (Wenzel, 2017). Obama has
all three proofs represented in his speech. Obama s Ethos or his credibility comes from the fact that he
was chosen as the keynote speaker at the DNC. While at the time he was a not widely known
politician, the fact that he was picked by presidential nominee, John Kerry. The way Obama carries
himself with pride and confidence; leading the audience to believe that he truly is just that. If Obama
made this same exact speech on the street people would not give him one minuet of their time but
because the DNC is a huge event held for the presidential elections, that automatically gives him
creditability. Obama uses pathos by telling the story of his parents growing up. He tells the audience
about how his father grew up in rural Kenya, herding goats, and eventually worked his way to a
scholarship in a magical place: America (Obama, 2004). He goes on to tell the story of his mother and
how she grew up in America with a military father and a

Reflective Introduction To Cinema
The larger majority of the Introduction to Cinema 2366 course was viewing films. Subsequently, the
films we viewed in the class have affected me in four gifts of the humanities. As a student, my
interests have developed around the social issues of classism and racism in America. Therefore, the
course has given me food for thought via films which tackle social issues causing me to rethink the
ways I understand these issues as well as understand film rhetoric to gain a deeper knowledge of how
society understood these problems. Cinema also allows viewers to gain a sense of the past, this is
especially true of the course since the films we ve watched were opened 1959 or before. In this way, I
have been able to understand historical events (such as the dust bowl, the great depression, and the red
scare) through characters who are relatable, causing me to understand that though time and geography
may differ between me and these characters, there exist timeless truths of humanity. The course has
also allowed me to extend myself intellectually. Before enrolling in this course, I had little knowledge
about cinema and its place in our society. The course has provided me with a new found appreciation
for the art of film which is an important subject in academia rather than just an elective. Lastly, I have
realized the idea of the infinite person, via this film course. Through the films viewed in class, I have
found myself relating to characters I regularly would not have. For

Tenets Of Preventive Force
scholars consider it unfortunate that Israel received denunciation from the UN and note that the attack
abided by all the criteria of jus ad bellum. McMahan (2006), D Amato (1996), Long (2005), and Ford
(2005) all contend it is an exemplary case of preventive force used justifiably as it illustrates how
there should be no blanket provision against preventive force under the just war theory. These scholars
note that neither the Caroline Test nor the definition of preemption require alteration. However, the
tenets of just war theory should be used to arbitrate if the preventive action was justifiable. They are
good examples of supporters of the Reform position in this debate. McMahan even goes so far as to
say, Although this preventive attack...was ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This is more prevalent in complex environments such as modern society, where most aspects of life
are intertwined and interdependent, especially so in a globalized world. This interconnection, while
beneficial in some areas, also creates vulnerabilities for states. Globalization does so at the strategic
international level as well, something that makes even local conflicts appear to have larger
implications on national security. Specific to military action and this complexity, Coker believes, it is
almost impossible to anticipate and therefore insure against all the effects of going to war (Coker
2009, 105). He goes on to imply that anxiety is the dominant part of a risk society. Such anxiety and
fear of potential risks can alter perceptions and influence decision making. Beck eloquently stated this
idea: The more threatening the shadows that fall on the present because a terrible future is impending,
the more believed are the headlines provoked by the dramatization of risk today (Beck 1997,

Dna Is Not A Bodily Fluid
DNA is not a bodily fluid, but is genetic information that can be identified through a bodily fluid.
According to a scholarly journal article, in the Nineteenth century law enforcement agencies began to
collect, organize, analyze and store collections of DNA samples for forensic purposes (big brother).
DNA is extremely useful when nailing a suspect who it has been traced to. The biological evidence
left at a crime scene comes along with a great story that has yet to be told through bodily fluids such
as semen, blood or saliva found at the crime scene. These bodily fluids become key evidence to
solving a case.
There are numerous cases that have been solved based on the findings of DNA through multiple
bodily fluids left at a crime scene. The case that I had chose was E.K MacDaniel, Warden et al.
Petitioners v. Troy Brown, which was a case that dealt with semen taken from a rape kit. Although the
subject of rape could a be a touchy subject for most people, I find cases that deal with such a
horrendous act to be very interesting due to how the case is investigated and the measures it takes to
find the evidence needed to solve the case.
In the case of E.K MacDaniel, Warden et al. Petitioners v. Troy Brown, on January 29, 1994, at 1a.m.
9 year old, Jane Doe was brutally raped in her trailer bedroom. Residing near Jane Doe s trailer were

Rape Culture
#RapeCultureIsWhen
These past two weeks, we have focused on the prevalent rape culture in the United States and how that
affects society. We found that sexual violence has become somewhat of a norm in the U.S., and that it
is no longer broadcasted in the media like the atrocity it is. This, along with the inherent gender
stereotypes within society, contributes to rape culture, which is defined by the Oxford Living
Dictionary as a society or environment whose prevailing social attitudes have the effect of normalizing
or trivializing sexual assault and abuse. Our society bombards us with acts of sexual violence, through
music and visual media. It is treated like a despicable act that must not be tolerated, one where the
perpetrators must be held accountable. Yet, at the same time, it is tolerated, and the perpetrators are
often allowed to roam free without punishment, while their victims are tortured with what happened to
them for the rest of their lives. This is rape culture, and although the term is circulating more and
more, the populous does not regard it as a serious issue, but as a problem made up hysterical feminists
(Rape Culture is When, Maxwell).
One of the works that we analyzed in this unit was a 2013 article by Roxanne Gay, titled The Careless
Language of Sexual Violence. Gay discusses how the media is desensitizing us to the rape and sexual
violence that runs rampant. She tells us about an eleven year old girl who was gang raped by eighteen

The Is The Thought Of Mind Control Of People
Some people believe there are conspiracies out there. If you go around and ask random people about
certain conspiracies they will say one of three things: I have never heard of this event. , That event
never happened. That does not even sound realistic. , or This event definitely did occur. You just do
not see any proof because the government destroyed all proof and paperwork. People will naturally
have different opinions. I believe these events have to exist. There are too many cover ups and boring
actions in life for there not to be anything out there that is not true, even if it does sound weird, such as
the Project Monarch coverup. Threw the history, why the mind control was implemented, and the
stages. I do believe.
Project Monarch is the believed mind control of people. In the beginning the concept of mind control
can be traced back to Egypt, Greece, India and Babylon; especially back to Egypt from the source
called the Book of the Dead. In the book the details have been revealed of torture, using drugs, and
hypnotism. From there on the concept of mind control has been used widely, such as During the 13th
Century, the Roman Catholic church increased and solidified its dominion throughout Europe with the
infamous Inquisition. ( Patton Operation Monarch ) The most famous usage was during WWII.

Children Are Different From Adults
The first way that children are different from adults is that they are more likely to get sick and injured.
The second way that children are different from adults is that they spend more time outside. The third
way that children are different from adults is that they need help from adults in emergencies. The
fourth way that children are different from adults is that they put their hands in their mouth more often
than adults. The fifth way that children are different from adults is that it takes a while for them to
understand something vs. an adult who can understand something instantly. The sixth way that
children are different from adults is that they don t have to worry about paying any bills. The seventh
way that children are different from adults is that they can t drive a car. The eighth way that children
are different from adults is that they don t work or have a job. The ninth way that children are different
from adults is that they most likely don t have to do any chores since their young. The tenth way that
children are different from adults is that they are self centered. 2.) There was only one thing that I
listed in the way children and adults think. I mentioned that it takes a while for children to understand
something vs. an adult who can understand something instantly. The reason why is because adults
have a better knowledge because their much older and mature. I think my list included mostly other
things in the way children and adults think because when

Passivity In The Handmaid s Tale
Is that how we lived, then? But we lived as usual. Everyone does, most of the time. Whatever is going
on is as usual. Even this is as usual, now. We lived, as usual, by ignoring. Ignoring isn t the same as
ignorance, you have to work at it. In the novel The Handmaid s Tale, written by Margaret Atwood,
Atwood s character Offred, a handmaid, guides the reader through her life in the Republic of Gilead.
Through a strategically placed sequence of events, accompanied by references to animals and
inanimate objects to describe human beings, Atwood sculpts the underlying theme of the fatal
potential of passivity to result in the stripping of humanity. First and foremost, Atwood incorporates a
series of flashbacks of a pre Gilead era in order to ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

passivity prevents her thoughts and desires from becoming a reality. Later in the novel, at Jezebel s,
Offred allows the Commander s fingers to encircle her ankle like a bracelet, where the tattoo is, a

act is a sign of ownership (254). This image of cattle represents how Offred permits the Commander

back door, into the kitchen, [sets] down the basket, and [goes] upstairs, orderly and calm (287). Rather
than taking action, Offred [sits] in her room, at the window, waiting (291). Her passivity is so severe
that she remains submissive even when she knows her illegal relationship with the Commander has
been unveiled. In fact, the only crime she committed was remain obedient to the Commander.

Science not only places an important role in the human culture, but it also helps people in multifarious
ways in today s world. However, people said that science will hurt human, and they set a block on the

As the author states, We live in an age of scientific triumph. Science has solved many of nature s
puzzles and greatly enlarged human knowledge. Yet despite these proud achievements, science today
is increasingly mistrusted and under attack. It is attacked more often because it is misunderstood
(Bishop 304). He believes the solution and invention that science provides to us are more than we
think; However, people start to focus on the side effects of science instead of the advantages it brings,
and the criticism seem like a common practice now. The main cause of this is not only the blindly
follow by the ignorant public, but also the fear of find out the truth. Resistance to science is born of
the fear. Fear, in turn, is bred by ignorance. And it is ignorance that is our deepest malady (Bishop
308). The main anti science sentiment is the religious community, because they need to protect their
belief. They might afraid of the truth that science can find out, because it will shake their base of
religion. In the other hands, if those people still criticize science by their fears, our society is going to

The Shape Memory Effect And Super Elasticity
INTRODUCTION
The Shape Memory Alloys are quite fascinating materials characterised by a Shape Memory effect and
Super elasticity, which ordinary metals and alloys do not have. This unique behaviour was first found
in Au 47.5%Cd alloy in 1951, and was publicised by its discovery in a Ti Ni alloy in 1963. After much
research and development thereafter, shape memory alloys are now being practically used as new
functional alloys for pipe couplings, antennae for cellular phones and various actuators in electrical
appliances, etc. Furthermore, they have attracted keen attention as promising candidate for smart
materials since they function as sensors as well as actuators.
The shape memory effect and super elasticity are based on the diffusion less transformation called
martensitic transformation. The Shape memory effect is a unique property of certain alloys exhibiting
martensitic transformations. Even though the alloy is deformed in low temperature phase, it recovers
its original shape by reverse transformation upon heating to a critical temperature called reverse
transformation temperature. Many other alloys such as In T1, 3, 4 Cu Zn and Cu Al Ni were also
found. The same alloys have another unique property called Super elasticity at a higher temperature,
which is associated with a large (18%) nonlinear recoverable strain upon loading and unloading. Since
these alloys have a unique property in remembering the original shape, having an actuator function
and having

Act Of Thecla Essay
The Acts of Thecla describes Thecla s trials and journey as she becomes Christian; this was written by
the author as a way of emphasizing the importance of women s roles in Christianity. Compared to the
other women protagonists that were read about in class, Penthesileia and Judith, Thecla is passive for
a heroine. The author of The Acts of Thecla has a contrasting view of women in Christianity when
compared to other Christians in the first two centuries of the Common Era. Having a female
protagonist is important to The Acts of Thecla because the trials she faced were specific to her role as
a female. Thecla is sentenced to be burned at the stake after refusing to marry Thamyris. Refusing to
get to married to your betrothed was seen as breaking a contract. When Thecla is on the pyre being
prepared to burn she sees something. And looking over the crowd, she saw the Lord sitting in the form
of Paul and said, As if I were not able to bear up, Paul has come to look after me. And she looks

And when she had given this witness she headed off to Seleucia, and after enlightening many with the

have ended with Thecla getting married proving that women aren t strong enough to preach the word
of God. Instead it ends with her having reached the end of her life never breaking her celibacy and

The Church of St. Martin in the Fields Essay
If you walk along Charing Cross Road from Tottenham Court Road you will come across an area

The Square is situated in the city of Westminster and at its center is Nelson s column, which is
surrounded by four lion statues at its base. In the area there are a number of commemorative statues
and sculptures within the Square. Just as you reach the square on the left is a church called St. Martin

Some of the earliest information on the church dates back to 1222 over a dispute between the Abbot of
Westminster and the Bishop of London over who had sole control over the church. The Archbishop
decided in favor of Westminster so the monks of Westminster Abbey began to use the church for their
own personal use. In 1542, Henry VIII rebuilt the church to keep plague victims from the area from
having to pass through his Palace of Whitehall. At this time in history, the church isolated between the
cities of Westminster and London so it was a good place to keep the plague victims away from the rest
of society. In 1606, James granted an acre of land for a new churchyard. The building was enlarged
eastwards, increasing the length of the church by about half its original size (McMaster 105). The
church was built of brick and covered with stone facings. The roof was tiled and there was now a
stone tower with buttresses protruding from the back of the church. The ceiling was slightly arched
while the interior was filled with galleries on the north, south, and west sides. In 1720, Parliament
passed an act for the rebuilding of the church allowing for a sum of up to 22,000 pounds to be raised
to rebuild it (McMaster 50). A temporary church was constructed on the churchyard and partly on the
ground for the reformation of the church. The rebuilding commissioners selected

respond in a particular way. In Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon , Ang Lee utilises a range of film
techniques to position his audience through a combination of quiet, dramatic scenes and
choreographed action sequences. In his painting, Third of May, 1808 Fransisco Goya conveys
meaning exclusively with distinctively visual techniques. Both the composers are able to effectively

Free Trade And Trade Agreements
Free Trade
Free trade is a policy in which the government does not interfere against imports or impedes with
exports by applying tariffs (Encyclopedia, 2015). Free trade is about removing barriers like tariffs,
quotas, and other restrictions. Tariffs are taxes that the countries enforce on imported goods and
services, they are set in place to make trade harder. This ultimately causes the price of goods and
services for consumers to be more expensive. Quotas are a limited quantity countries put on imports
and exports. Barriers to trade is a government limitation on the amount of international goods and
services. Countries decide to put up barriers on trade for the sole purpose of protecting their own
economy and interests. The United States has free trade agreements with 20 countries, including the
North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA), the Tran Pacific Partnership Agreement (TPP), and
the Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership (T TIP). There are many advantages and
disadvantages with free trade agreements. The North American Free Trade Agreement was
implemented in 1994, it consists of three countries; Canada, Mexico, and the United States. NAFTA is
the largest free zone which sets the groundwork for a stronger economic development as well as the
raise in prosperity between this countries (NAFTA, 2013). For the three countries in the agreement,
NAFTA has removed tariffs and non tariff barriers such as quotas, licensing and other limitations.

What Are The Causes Of The Battle Of Isandlwana
After the British arrived at the Cape, their influence and power spread to all areas of southern Africa.
This colonisation was met with conflict and resistance, involving many indigenous groups, and led to
tense skirmishes with the Zulu Nation. This struggle between the Zulus and the English led to the
Battle of Isandlwana, one of the most famous British defeats in history. The causes involved demands
for labour and land, however there was an ulterior motive as to why Zululand was invaded.
Regarding Anglo Zulu relations, the British felt that the Zulu Nation posed a great military threat
against the White Natal Colony and the Transvaal. The British sought to set up a Federation of White
colonies and states in South Africa in 1879 , however they felt vulnerable due to the fear caused by the
very near Zulu menace (Source D). This specific fear of the Zulu nation was dominant because at the
time Cetshwayo had transformed the Zulus into a stronger and mightier power, and therefore was
more of a threat towards the British. This fear of the Zulus potentially overthrowing the white
government spread to other regions of South Africa, where the settlers hoped that the white
government would stay in power. So the British felt it necessary to cause conflict with the Zulus in
1879 over the control of Zululand, and to the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Germany as a country was hard hit by the effects of the war with the years to follow seeing the
country go through both political and economic instability. Hitler grew up in this era when Germany
was facing many sanctions imposed by the Allied Forces through the Versailles Treaty. After serving
in the First World War I, he resigned his military career to join the German Worker s Party where he
rose through the ranks to be the party leader, and he changed the party s name to the famously known
National sozialistische Deutsche Arbeiterpartei (Nazi). Hitler took this as the right platform to get
more power in Germany to oppose the influence of the Allied Forces in Germany. He underwent a lot
of power struggles as he tried to mobilize popular support for the Nazi party. It was until 1932 when
the party gunned a total of 37% of the votes in the election which was largest share of votes in the
election. This meant Hitler was a leader of unimaginable power within the Nazi party and Germany
and by 1933, he was the chancellor of Germany. After the death of President Hindenburg in 1934,
Hitler became Der Fuhrer and he assumed the presidential powers including those of the supreme

Canada In The 19th Century Essay
The 16th century is really where it all began. Where a man of prudence explored the Gulf of Saint
Lawrence. Who knew this land of green would be re visualised as a world of red? It was only a matter
of time before the south of Canada was bared of its natural existence to a nationalistic, industrialized
and capitalistic society. When columbus found North America in the 15th century, explorers such as
Jacques Cartier wanted the New world for themselves. The term the New World simply reminds us of
the rapid industrialized development America has endured for the past 500 years. The west dominated
the 20th century, with european and North American powers creating a technological revolution by the

Critics of the canadian approach argue that non assimilation of immigrants weaken Canada s national
identity because civic nationalism will weaken due to ethnic ones. However, immigrants continue to
support Canada s immigration quo and international organizations glorify Canadian immigration
policy. Metropolitans in canada were attractive to immigrants because they had the ability to better
their lifestyle as cities in Canada began industrializing which provided more sources for employment.
The economy flourished with grand international immigration that primarily favoured British and
European immigrants until 1980 s when the government led the admission of more ethnic cultures.
Canada was therefore named a mosaic for particularism. As multiculturalism became tolerant,
metropolitans such as Toronto and vancouver expressed diversity. Cultural appreciation aided the
acceptance of political difference. Symbolically, in 1965 the maple leaf flag was adopted because
Canada portrayed significant sovereignty and felt the former flag praised Britain rather than
embracing the high rates of immigrants and french canadians. Noticeable immigration is one of the
fundamental socio political issues at the moment. The acceptance of justifiable immigrants, has been

program of sweeping economic and social changes. Castro allied his government with the Soviet

humanitarian rights and health of the people of Cuba. The embargo today places a ban on subsidiary
trade, Licensing, shipping and humanitarian aid. (Close Up Foundation) In 1992, the Cuban
Democracy act imposed a ban on subsidiary trade with Cuba. This ban restricted Cuba s ability to
import medicines and medical supplies from third country sources. There have also been corporate
buy outs and mergers between U.S. and European pharmaceutical companies thus adding to the
number of companies permitted to do business with Cuba. Under the Cuban Democracy Act, The U.S.
Treasury and Commerce Departments are allowed to license individual sales of medicines and
medical supplies, supposedly for humanitarian reasons to make up for the embargo s impact on health
care delivery. According to the U.S. corporate executives, the licensing provisions are so tough as to
have had the opposite effect. With this statement, it is assumed that there are fewer licenses given out
for humanitarian reason therefore favoring the embargo and aiding in the downfall of health in Cuba.

Lack of Female Characters in The Strange Case of Dr....
Even the most casual reader can note the fact that there are very few female characters present in
Robert Louis Stevenson s 19th century novel, The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde. Those
that are found within the work hardly constitute as substantial ones none of the women have more than
a few lines of dialogue and appear within the tale for longer than a chapter or two. A bevy of critics
have pointed out the fact that such an egregious omission is hardly coincidental in fact, more than a
few have cited the fact that this piece of literature functions as a protest regarding the degree of
women s liberation that the New Woman possessed near the turn of the 20th century in Victorian
England (Reed 2). When considered through this feminist lens, it becomes easily discernible to the
prudent reader that Stevenson portrayed no female characters in a positive light and simply used them
to reinforce negative aspects of femininity, which he believed were rapidly changing for the worse.
Some critics have advanced the notion that one of the reasons there is such a paucity of women and of
strong, beneficent women in particular within this story is due to what they represented in typical
Victorian England society. Women were generally viewed as a social force or a source of authority
which reinforces this fiction of coherent male identity (Doane and Hodges 63). This quotation
suggests the fact that women were generally the keepers of morality and virtue within Victorian

The Presence of Different Elements of Power in the...
For this assignment, my group decided to visit the Solel Congregation of Mississauga to observe a
Jewish religious service. This essay will argue the presence of different elements of power in the
synagogue we visited as discussed in Malory Nye s Religion: The Basics. The reverence for the Torah
resembles Michel Foucault s idea of the power of the panopticon, which parallels the distinct power of
the Torah. I will also argue that, based on the interactions between the rabbi and the participants at the
service, Antonio Gramsci s concept of hegemony was not properly represented in the synagogue. The
first interesting observation that I made was the different in behavior in relation to the different

The action of touching the Torah with the shawl or inanimate object and proceeding to kiss it was
specific to the Torah; only the Torah received this special action. In this way, the Torah appears to
represent one of the varieties of the panopticon Foucault suggests, where certain behaviours and
actions were directly related to the understanding that the Torah was present. Further, even though the
Torah does not possess the ability to constantly observe the actions, almost all of the individuals
within the synagogue were influenced by the presence of the sacred text. The relationship between the
circulation of the Torah and the unique behavior parallels the power that constant surveillance has
over individuals within the panopticon. Despite these similarities, Nye mentions a key characteristic of
Foucault s panopticon, where power is exerted within the field of social relationships (Nye 2008, 73).
Simply put, the Torah is incapable of forming the social relationships that is unique to this theory. As
such, some elements of Foucault s panopticon can be applied to this situation, but it is clearly not an
ideal example of this concept. Another observation that was made while attending the service in the
Solel Congregation was the inclusion of the different perspectives and opinions of the people who

The Unification of Germany Essay
The Unification of Germany
Bismarck
Otto von Bismarck achieved the unification of the disjointed German states through the skillful
understanding of realpolitikand the Machiavellian use of war as a political tool to eliminate Germany s
rival nations, gain the support of the German people and gain territory. This ultimately created a
German legacy of strong militaristic tendencies, scheming national relations, and economic clout
challenging the European heavyweights like England and France. Bismarck s plan for unification
began with his instigation of war with the small German states of Schleswig and Holstein over an
insignificant dispute concerning the governing of the states. Bismarck s ... Show more content on

Using the tools of realpolitik, Bismarck negotiated a settlement of uneasy peace with the division,
which would help to provoke the next war in his course towards unification. Bismarck had also
expanded the influence of the German Confederation with this move as well as gained an important
access to the sea. This was the first instance of Prussia asserting itself internationally, and it wouldn t
be the last before unification was complete. To get the support of his king, Bismarck appealed to his
militaristic side, as the king originally was disinclined to start a war, but after appealing to his
militaristic and nationalistic sentiments, Bismarck effectively convinced his king to go to war.
Conducting the war in Schleswig Holstein was a simple task for Prussia, but the aftermath was more
involved. With the two states defeated, Bismarck fought to see them divided between Prussia and
Austria ensuring tensions between the two. The final arrangement was as abrasive as possible, and the
Seven Weeks War, between Prussia and Austria soon followed because of this outcome. Bismarck
entered this war with a unique goal for its conclusion as his main goal was not to instigate a conflict to
defeat an enemy, but to merely assert the sovereignty of the German states. He kept this goal in mind
when conducting the war, and he avoided creating a humiliating defeat

The designer needs to know the minimum, nominal, and maximum volume of fluid required. Different
types of actuation operate in different ranges of volumetric displacements.
1
Input Pedal Force Input pedal force is generally expressed as a maximum force allowed to generate
the desired maximum brake line pressure. Again, there are governing agencies that make
recommendations to assist in identifying this value. BRAKE ACTUATION CIRCUITS The system
designer can accomplish brake actuation in different ways. The use of a direct means of actuation,
such as hydraulic pressure to apply the brakes is but one method of brake actuation. Another type of
actuation is reverse modulation or negative braking as it is referred to in the European community.
Reverse modulation uses hydraulic pressure to release a spring apply brake. Maximum torque is
produced when hydraulic pressure is absent either intentionally or due to system failure. The subject
of reverse modulation requires further detailed explanation beyond the scope fo this paper. Also
beyond the scope of this paper are pneumatic and vacuum boosted hydraulic circuits as it is felt that
the trend is clearly away from them toward full hydraulic circuits. This paper will discuss three broad
categories of hydraulic pressure actuation circuits, these are:
cylinder bore closing off the compensating port, see Figure 1 (E). This completely seals the hydraulic

Imagine getting captured, being taken away from everything, and not being able to do anything about

of good music nowadays doesn t necessarily have to contain vocals. There are pieces of music out
there that were created with a laptop and head phones by people who are simply making beats. Things
are different now. (Written By: ILL Mind 2016). The majority of recording artists do not have the

Worship God Reflection
I stared out at the sunset from my post of land in the woods. The bleeding of reds, oranges, and pinks
together perfectly reflected onto the shimmering lake. My stomach ached, but the taste of beauty made
the pain somewhat bearable. This past summer, I went on a La Vida trip, where I was required to do a
solo experience, where I was denied food and social interactions for two days. Fasting was proven to
be difficult, but it was through that experience that I began to understand the concept of giving all
yourself in worship to God. Most of my life I was only familiar with worshiping God with my time,
resources, or through song. In denying myself food, I was shown how to worship God through fasting.
From the lessons I learned at La Vida, my goals for the next four years are to do what Jesus said in
Luke 10:27: to love the Lord (my) God with all (my) heart and with all (my) soul and with all (my)
strength. Over these four years, I plan to worship God through every aspect of my life, including but
not limited to in my academic and musical pursuits. Through my academics, I hope to be diligent in
my pursuit of knowledge, to grow in my character, and to worship God. In the Liberal Arts for the
Christian Life, Jeffrey C. Davis emphasized that education can be a means of worshiping the Lord. In
all my pursuits of knowledge, I should study as if I m working for the Lord, not for human masters
(Col. 3:23). Then, through this discipline and training of faithfulness, I can be

Jewish Funeral Traditions Essay
Jewish Funeral Traditions
At a Jewish funeral a candle is placed by the deceased and they are never left alone. The reason the
body is not left alone is because the soul stays near the body after its separation and is aware of the
love and respect for its body.
Shomrim, those who stay with the deceased, are assigned to stay and say prayers over the body on a
24 hour basis so that the holy prayers comfort the soul.
The body is cleansed, washed thoroughly from head to toe (Taharah). The faces of the deceased are
not allowed to face down out of respect for the deceased. The body is then dried, everything is done
by the members of the Burial Society and they also dress the deceased in a ... Show more content on

The funeral takes place in the cemetery grounds and stresses the merits of the deceased and a trust in
God s justice.
In the service it is affirmed that one day god will conquer death,
He maketh death to vanish in life external; and the lord God wipeth away tears from off all faces…
Isiah chapter 25 verse 8.
Everyone fulfils the mitzvah of taking the body to the grave and the body is buried in a single grave.
The deceased closest relatives help bury the body they shovel a few shovelfuls of mud into the grave
each. After the funeral in the hall, as a parting greeting to the mourners, people say May God comfort
you among those who mourn for Zion and for Jerusalem . This is also said by anyone who visits the
mourners in the week after the funeral. A popular greeting is 2I wish you a long life .
When the mourners go back to their house they sit Shiva, they sit on low stools and recite Kaddish for
seven days, it is called Shiva because Shiva means seven days.
Within the first year after the funeral a stone is put by the grave and every year on the anniversary of
the deceased death a candle is lit which is called the Yorzeit candle.

The Membrane Of The Cell Membrane
1.0 Introduction
1.1 The Cell Membrane Biological cells have a membrane that separates the contents of the cell from
its exterior environment and serves a number of functions. The membrane is partially permeable,
facilitating and controlling what materials pass into and out of the cell. The membrane can produce
different compartments within the cell in addition to allowing electrical signals to pass along them,
playing a role in cell signalling and creating attachment sites for enzymes and molecules involved in
the metabolism (Keeton, 1983, p. 71).
1.2 The Phospholipid Bilayer
The membrane of the cell is composed of a Phospholipid Bilayer with various protein molecules
floating within it phospholipids are fats and are constructed of two fatty acid tails that are hydrophobic
and a Phosphate head that is hydrophilic. The heads orientate themselves towards the water molecules
outside of the cell with the hydrophobic tails pointing away from the water molecules. A second tier of
phospholipids forms a mirror image with the heads pointing towards the water molecules inside the
cell itself. These two tiers of Phospholipids form the Phospholipid Bilayer (Keeton, 1983, p. 71).
Figure 1 Phospholipid Bilayer
1.3 The Fluid Mosaic Model
The Fluid Mosaic Model (Keeton, 1983, p. 71) shows that within the Phospholipid Bilayer are a
number of proteins that float freely and form a mosaic pattern. These proteins can be intrinsic and
exist through the complete thickness of the membrane

Coaches Have Talent And Dedication Essay
So many Coaches have talent and dedication for what they do. I m proud to play for one that has a
spectacular history of coaching. That coach is Dennis Lorio, who Graduated from LSU (Louisiana
State University) with an economic degree and played baseball. I love the intensity and the
relationship in football Coach Lorio explaining with a passionate expression. I can see it in his eyes
that he is very dedicated and hardworking coach. As of now he is 62 years old and still willing to
coach. It s not the same without coaching. The joy and the sorrow I feel during the season has been
addicted to me. I ve been in this game almost all my life and that is a very long time.
From the article of Sports Nola, Nick Kreugar wrote about Dennis Lorio:
He was offensive coordinator at East St. John for the past two years, but resigned for family reasons
last October. He is well known for his time at Thibodaux and led them to the inaugural 5A state
championship in 1991. Lorio also spent time as LSU offensive line coach from 1992 94 and returned
to Thibodaux in 2008 leading the Tigers to a 27 12 record with 5A state quarterfinal playoff runs in
2008 and 2009. He has a career coaching record of 105 70.
Even tough he lives in New Orleans, he drives an hour for his work every day. In 2013, Coach Lorio
took a challenge by coaching the Morgan City Tigers after he resigned from Thibodaux. He came to to
Morgan City knowing that Morgan city never made it to the playoff over a decade. He has seen

The Relationship Between Gender Roles And Governmental...
Connection between Gender Roles and Governmental Opportunities
Frida Pineda
South Texas College Abstract This paper shares six articles chosen at random over studies made of
gender roles and governmental elections. Although not every article provides the same idea or belief,
most of them do. Therefore if there is an opposite argument, you are going to able to see why and at
the end, we found ideas as to why they do not agree with us. And even when there is not an official
response of gender being a problem, we can speculate that it s true, gender roles are a big part in
government.

Literature Review
This first article by Shirley Rosenwasser and Norma Dean shows the underrepresentation of women, it
is shown by two studies made to college students. In Study 1, the masculinity/femininity of
governmental office held positions were analyzed and rated as how feminine or masculine they were.
One hundred thirty three college students were recruited from introductory psychology classes at
Southwest Texas State University (Rosenwasser Dean, 1989). Participants were asked to describe how
distinguished they thought each office was, as well as the rate of importance of each holding office. In
Study 2, thirty nine men and eighty three women were recruited again from the same class
(Rosenwasser Dean, 1989). However, now they were asked to read one of the four descriptions of a
hypothetical candidate, and they had to base their answers on the hypothetical example. After, they
needed to evaluate the candidates to show their level of efficacy. Estimating the chances of someone
winning the election was the next step. And finally, participants rated the importance of each
presidential task. There was a discussion following the studies, Study 1 showed that masculine
descriptors were far more important than feminine descriptors. And Study 2 showing, that although,
women and feminine candidates were rated more competent in feminine tasks as well as men with
masculine tasks, students still rated masculine tasks more

Christianity may have started on simple terms of following Jesus, but today it has evolved into a
massive world wide religion with numerous denominations and belief systems. The main the
Denominations today are Roman Catholicism, Eastern Orthodoxy, and Protestantism. When
Constantine made christianity the state religion in rome he gave rise to the Roman State Church. This
Church has caused massive change in the world with the crusades being a good example. After the fall
of rome the eastern and western christians were no longer under governmental control which lead to
divisions in beliefs between the two sects. This Split lead to two churches: The Roman Catholic
Church and the Eastern Orthodoxy. Protestantism is a derivative of the Catholic Church. It is
popularly believed that protestantism began when Martin Luther published the Ninety Five Thesis
which spoke out against medieval doctrine of the Catholic church. The three branches of christianity
have changed to encompass an enormous range of beliefs but the core beliefs have remained the same.
Islam began with The prophet muhammad who wrote the holy book the Qur an. The basic tenets of
islam are the five pillars. Islam began to spread very quickly after the death of Muhammad. Islam took
over much of the middle east and northern africa with the conquest of groups such as the muslim
turks. Islam has two main sects, the Sunni and the Shi a. The division came from the death of

  • 2. Group Counseling Reflection I learned two significant things about group counseling in this course. The first thing that I learned is the importance of setting up a treatment plan. The intention is to follow the client from their entrance into the program until the client is discharged. In this process the clients problems are identified through various assessments and as each problem is addressed, it is checked off of the list. Once all of the problems are checked off of the list, the client is considered as having completed the plan. This plan is especially important because it evokes thoughtful conversation between the client and the counselor and is the best method to gain information from the client regarding the help they want to receive. The second most significant thing that I learned about group counseling is how to design a group from start to finish. From pre group design, planning the goals of the group and determining the members to setting up the environment and structuring the sessions, each step adds its own important components to designing group counseling. As a potential group leader I have learned a few things about myself in terms of my interactions with the clients. I am patient with my clients because I understand that it takes time for clients to build trust in the counselor and because it also takes time for a client to accept their situation allowing them to move toward positive change. I am a good listener because I realize that as a counselor, I have to allow my clients the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. Sostratus Lighthouse The most outstanding was the creation of Sostratus from Cnidus (III century BC) a sea lighthouse on the island of Pharos near Alexandria, which was considered one of the Seven Wonders of the World (it has not survived to our time). It is a three tier tower 120 m high: its base was square, the middle tier had the shape of an octagon, and the upper tier was a round structure with statues that adorned it. At the top of the lighthouse, equipped with metal mirrors, the fire was constantly maintained. The lighthouse served as both an observation post and a fortress. The nature of the planning of Hellenistic cities was distinguished by strict order. The straightforwardness of the sometimes wide streets, from ten to four meters, in Pergamum and Priene), their crossing at a right angle, the location in the center of ... The building materials were used basically the same as in the classical era marble, limestone, wood, raw bricks, burned brick was used more often. It is important to note that the engineering and construction essence of the structure began to push aside the architectural and artistic image of the monument. The integrity and organic content of the classical works were gradually lost, but the monuments began to influence more emotionally and powerfully on greater number of people. Mostly, the order system was preserved, in which, however, there was a tendency to mix different orders and their elements. • 4. The Food Personalities Of Gender Expectations After finishing an initial review of the shows, I identified common themes between the food personalities in terms of gender expectations. From this sample, I identified five culinary personas: homemaker, non traditional female, craftsman, explorer, and non traditional male (gastrosexual). Even though these hosts had unique characteristics, the thematic presence of gender division between domestic cooking and professional cooking underlined all the personalities. These identified attributes for the most part do adhere to the traditional femininity and masculinity with some divergent examples. Persona Attributes The traditionally female culinary persona portrays a woman s culinary authority lies in the domestic kitchen. Although this study ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The emotion behind Drummond s cooking was reflected in the rest of women who fit this persona. This emotion and placement in the domestic kitchen displays the traditional feminine characteristics of emotionality and domesticity. While Food Network presented only traditionally feminine personas in their programing, Cooking Channel provided one female food personality who crossed traditional gender lines. Harry Eastwood, British host of Sinful Sweets, explores and travels the United States finding bakeries and confectionaries. As a culinary expert and accomplished chef, she casually discusses technical knowledge of baking and often gives critical suggestions for how the dessert could be better. This professional expertise separates her from the rest of female hosts because her professionalism and absence from the domestic setting draws attention to her greater culinary authority than untrained home cooks. While Eastwood departs from the traditional female attributes, she highlights the attributes associated with traditional masculinity. These personas represent professional culinary authorities whose legitimacy stems from artistic experimentation and technical training. These personas find motivation by sharing culinary knowledge and are associated with traditionally masculine occupations like craftsman or explorer. Like the feminine personalities, the ... • 5. Unaccompanied Asylum Seeking Children, Power Relationships... Introduction This essay explores how unaccompanied asylum seeking children (UASC) are oppressed in the UK. An unaccompanied asylum seeking child is a person under the age of eighteen who has left their country of origin in order to seek refuge and is separated from both parents and are not being cared for by an adult who, by law or custom has responsibility to do so (UNHCR, 1994:121). They are therefore applying for asylum in their own right. Discrimination is the process of identifying that someone is different and, due to this difference, treating them unfairly (Thompson, 2006). Xenoracism is discrimination that is aimed at people specifically because they are from a different country, and are therefore strangers (Sivanandan, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Power is the capacity to act in such a way as to control others (Harris, 1997:28). He argues that everyone has at least some power, and that this power, for the relatively powerless, can be used to influence the decisions of the dominant group. Unaccompanied asylum seeking children not disclosing information can be seen as them exercising the little power they have. This can however have a negative impact on their lives in the UK, for example, being placed under section 17 of the Children Act instead of under section 20, which would offer the child more support. Foucault (1977) uses discourse to relate to how language can be used to construct ideas and thoughts about groups. Discourses and language can therefore help construct or reduce oppression (Thompson, 2006). If a group has power, they have the ability and opportunity to fulfil or obstruct personal, relational, or collective needs (Prilleltensky, 2008). If the dominant discourse of a less powerful group is positive, the group with power may help that group fulfil their needs. If the dominant discourse of a less powerful group is negative, such as with UASC, the powerful group may obstruct them in fulfilling their needs, and therefore will cause oppression. Innes (2010) argues that the negative discourse of asylum seekers as a threat to British society is portrayed in government literature ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 6. Rhetorical Analysis Of Barrack Obama s Met Barack Obama July 27, 2004, was the night America met Barack Obama. This was the night that Obama, a member of the Illinois Senate at the time, spoke as the keynote speaker at the Democratic National Convention. Obama is widely known for his and grand speeches that bring tears of hope and joy to many Americans eyes. To be able to produce such strong emotions, a speaker must put forth a speech that has all aspects of The Rhetoric, Ethos, pathos, logos, and the five canons, as a well as use another theory called Narrative Paradigm to register with the audience. Barrack Obama s 2004 DNC speech become widely successful as it created hope and national unity throughout Americas with the help of Obama s use of The Rhetoric and Narrative Paradigm Theory. The Rhetoric is a theory created by Aristotle; can be defined by Aristotle himself as an ability, in each particular case, to see the available means of persuasion . This theory holds three proofs to its name, ethos, pathos, and logos. The key to a successful speech is holding all three of these proofs in the work. Ethos is the character and credibility that the speaker holds. Pathos is what kind of emotional connection the speaker makes with the audience. And Logos is how clear and rational the speaker s argument is (Wenzel, 2017). Obama has all three proofs represented in his speech. Obama s Ethos or his credibility comes from the fact that he was chosen as the keynote speaker at the DNC. While at the time he was a not widely known politician, the fact that he was picked by presidential nominee, John Kerry. The way Obama carries himself with pride and confidence; leading the audience to believe that he truly is just that. If Obama made this same exact speech on the street people would not give him one minuet of their time but because the DNC is a huge event held for the presidential elections, that automatically gives him creditability. Obama uses pathos by telling the story of his parents growing up. He tells the audience about how his father grew up in rural Kenya, herding goats, and eventually worked his way to a scholarship in a magical place: America (Obama, 2004). He goes on to tell the story of his mother and how she grew up in America with a military father and a ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 7. Reflective Introduction To Cinema The larger majority of the Introduction to Cinema 2366 course was viewing films. Subsequently, the films we viewed in the class have affected me in four gifts of the humanities. As a student, my interests have developed around the social issues of classism and racism in America. Therefore, the course has given me food for thought via films which tackle social issues causing me to rethink the ways I understand these issues as well as understand film rhetoric to gain a deeper knowledge of how society understood these problems. Cinema also allows viewers to gain a sense of the past, this is especially true of the course since the films we ve watched were opened 1959 or before. In this way, I have been able to understand historical events (such as the dust bowl, the great depression, and the red scare) through characters who are relatable, causing me to understand that though time and geography may differ between me and these characters, there exist timeless truths of humanity. The course has also allowed me to extend myself intellectually. Before enrolling in this course, I had little knowledge about cinema and its place in our society. The course has provided me with a new found appreciation for the art of film which is an important subject in academia rather than just an elective. Lastly, I have realized the idea of the infinite person, via this film course. Through the films viewed in class, I have found myself relating to characters I regularly would not have. For ... McMahan (2006), D Amato (1996), Long (2005), and Ford (2005) all contend it is an exemplary case of preventive force used justifiably as it illustrates how there should be no blanket provision against preventive force under the just war theory. These scholars note that neither the Caroline Test nor the definition of preemption require alteration. However, the tenets of just war theory should be used to arbitrate if the preventive action was justifiable. They are good examples of supporters of the Reform position in this debate. This is more prevalent in complex environments such as modern society, where most aspects of life are intertwined and interdependent, especially so in a globalized world. Specific to military action and this complexity, Coker believes, it is almost impossible to anticipate and therefore insure against all the effects of going to war (Coker 2009, 105). He goes on to imply that anxiety is the dominant part of a risk society. Such anxiety and fear of potential risks can alter perceptions and influence decision making. • 9. Dna Is Not A Bodily Fluid DNA is not a bodily fluid, but is genetic information that can be identified through a bodily fluid. According to a scholarly journal article, in the Nineteenth century law enforcement agencies began to collect, organize, analyze and store collections of DNA samples for forensic purposes (big brother). DNA is extremely useful when nailing a suspect who it has been traced to. The biological evidence left at a crime scene comes along with a great story that has yet to be told through bodily fluids such as semen, blood or saliva found at the crime scene. These bodily fluids become key evidence to solving a case. There are numerous cases that have been solved based on the findings of DNA through multiple bodily fluids left at a crime scene. The case that I had chose was E.K MacDaniel, Warden et al. Petitioners v. Troy Brown, which was a case that dealt with semen taken from a rape kit. Although the subject of rape could a be a touchy subject for most people, I find cases that deal with such a horrendous act to be very interesting due to how the case is investigated and the measures it takes to find the evidence needed to solve the case. In the case of E.K MacDaniel, Warden et al. Petitioners v. Troy Brown, on January 29, 1994, at 1a.m. 9 year old, Jane Doe was brutally raped in her trailer bedroom. • 10. Rape Culture #RapeCultureIsWhen These past two weeks, we have focused on the prevalent rape culture in the United States and how that affects society. We found that sexual violence has become somewhat of a norm in the U.S., and that it is no longer broadcasted in the media like the atrocity it is. This, along with the inherent gender stereotypes within society, contributes to rape culture, which is defined by the Oxford Living Dictionary as a society or environment whose prevailing social attitudes have the effect of normalizing or trivializing sexual assault and abuse. Our society bombards us with acts of sexual violence, through music and visual media. It is treated like a despicable act that must not be tolerated, one where the perpetrators must be held accountable. Yet, at the same time, it is tolerated, and the perpetrators are often allowed to roam free without punishment, while their victims are tortured with what happened to them for the rest of their lives. This is rape culture, and although the term is circulating more and more, the populous does not regard it as a serious issue, but as a problem made up hysterical feminists (Rape Culture is When, Maxwell). One of the works that we analyzed in this unit was a 2013 article by Roxanne Gay, titled The Careless Language of Sexual Violence. Gay discusses how the media is desensitizing us to the rape and sexual violence that runs rampant. She tells us about an eleven year old girl who was gang raped by eighteen men in ... In the beginning the concept of mind control can be traced back to Egypt, Greece, India and Babylon; especially back to Egypt from the source called the Book of the Dead. In the book the details have been revealed of torture, using drugs, and hypnotism. From there on the concept of mind control has been used widely, such as During the 13th Century, the Roman Catholic church increased and solidified its dominion throughout Europe with the infamous Inquisition. In the novel The Handmaid s Tale, written by Margaret Atwood, Atwood s character Offred, a handmaid, guides the reader through her life in the Republic of Gilead. Through a strategically placed sequence of events, accompanied by references to animals and inanimate objects to describe human beings, Atwood sculpts the underlying theme of the fatal potential of passivity to result in the stripping of humanity. Yet despite these proud achievements, science today is increasingly mistrusted and under attack. It is attacked more often because it is misunderstood (Bishop 304). He believes the solution and invention that science provides to us are more than we think; However, people start to focus on the side effects of science instead of the advantages it brings, and the criticism seem like a common practice now. The main cause of this is not only the blindly follow by the ignorant public, but also the fear of find out the truth. Resistance to science is born of the fear. Fear, in turn, is bred by ignorance. • 16. The Shape Memory Effect And Super Elasticity INTRODUCTION The Shape Memory Alloys are quite fascinating materials characterised by a Shape Memory effect and Super elasticity, which ordinary metals and alloys do not have. This unique behaviour was first found in Au 47.5%Cd alloy in 1951, and was publicised by its discovery in a Ti Ni alloy in 1963. After much research and development thereafter, shape memory alloys are now being practically used as new functional alloys for pipe couplings, antennae for cellular phones and various actuators in electrical appliances, etc. Furthermore, they have attracted keen attention as promising candidate for smart materials since they function as sensors as well as actuators. The shape memory effect and super elasticity are based on the diffusion less transformation called martensitic transformation. The Shape memory effect is a unique property of certain alloys exhibiting martensitic transformations. Even though the alloy is deformed in low temperature phase, it recovers its original shape by reverse transformation upon heating to a critical temperature called reverse transformation temperature. Many other alloys such as In T1, 3, 4 Cu Zn and Cu Al Ni were also found. The same alloys have another unique property called Super elasticity at a higher temperature, which is associated with a large (18%) nonlinear recoverable strain upon loading and unloading. Since these alloys have a unique property in remembering the original shape, having an actuator function and having ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Act Of Thecla Essay The Acts of Thecla describes Thecla s trials and journey as she becomes Christian; this was written by the author as a way of emphasizing the importance of women s roles in Christianity. Compared to the other women protagonists that were read about in class, Penthesileia and Judith, Thecla is passive for a heroine. The author of The Acts of Thecla has a contrasting view of women in Christianity when compared to other Christians in the first two centuries of the Common Era. Having a female protagonist is important to The Acts of Thecla because the trials she faced were specific to her role as a female. Thecla is sentenced to be burned at the stake after refusing to marry Thamyris. Refusing to get to married to your betrothed was seen as breaking a contract. When Thecla is on the pyre being prepared to burn she sees something. In the area there are a number of commemorative statues and sculptures within the Square. Just as you reach the square on the left is a church called St. Martin in the Fields. James Gibbs built the church from 1722 1724, in honor of Saint Martin of Tours. It directly faces Trafalgar Square and is separated from the square by Charing Cross Road. The church stands tall and is surrounded by several businesses, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Some of the earliest information on the church dates back to 1222 over a dispute between the Abbot of Westminster and the Bishop of London over who had sole control over the church. The Archbishop decided in favor of Westminster so the monks of Westminster Abbey began to use the church for their own personal use. In 1542, Henry VIII rebuilt the church to keep plague victims from the area from having to pass through his Palace of Whitehall. At this time in history, the church isolated between the cities of Westminster and London so it was a good place to keep the plague victims away from the rest of society. In 1606, James granted an acre of land for a new churchyard. The building was enlarged eastwards, increasing the length of the church by about half its original size (McMaster 105). The church was built of brick and covered with stone facings. The roof was tiled and there was now a stone tower with buttresses protruding from the back of the church. The ceiling was slightly arched while the interior was filled with galleries on the north, south, and west sides. In 1720, Parliament passed an act for the rebuilding of the church allowing for a sum of up to 22,000 pounds to be raised to rebuild it (McMaster 50). A temporary church was constructed on the churchyard and partly on the ground for the reformation of the church. The rebuilding commissioners selected ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Free trade is about removing barriers like tariffs, quotas, and other restrictions. Tariffs are taxes that the countries enforce on imported goods and services, they are set in place to make trade harder. This ultimately causes the price of goods and services for consumers to be more expensive. Quotas are a limited quantity countries put on imports and exports. Barriers to trade is a government limitation on the amount of international goods and services. Countries decide to put up barriers on trade for the sole purpose of protecting their own economy and interests. This colonisation was met with conflict and resistance, involving many indigenous groups, and led to tense skirmishes with the Zulu Nation. This struggle between the Zulus and the English led to the Battle of Isandlwana, one of the most famous British defeats in history. The causes involved demands for labour and land, however there was an ulterior motive as to why Zululand was invaded. Regarding Anglo Zulu relations, the British felt that the Zulu Nation posed a great military threat against the White Natal Colony and the Transvaal. The British sought to set up a Federation of White colonies and states in South Africa in 1879 , however they felt vulnerable due to the fear caused by the very near Zulu menace (Source D). This specific fear of the Zulu nation was dominant because at the time Cetshwayo had transformed the Zulus into a stronger and mightier power, and therefore was more of a threat towards the British. This fear of the Zulus potentially overthrowing the white government spread to other regions of South Africa, where the settlers hoped that the white government would stay in power. Even the most casual reader can note the fact that there are very few female characters present in Robert Louis Stevenson s 19th century novel, The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde. Those that are found within the work hardly constitute as substantial ones none of the women have more than a few lines of dialogue and appear within the tale for longer than a chapter or two. A bevy of critics have pointed out the fact that such an egregious omission is hardly coincidental in fact, more than a few have cited the fact that this piece of literature functions as a protest regarding the degree of women s liberation that the New Woman possessed near the turn of the 20th century in Victorian England (Reed 2). When considered through this feminist lens, it becomes easily discernible to the prudent reader that Stevenson portrayed no female characters in a positive light and simply used them to reinforce negative aspects of femininity, which he believed were rapidly changing for the worse. Some critics have advanced the notion that one of the reasons there is such a paucity of women and of strong, beneficent women in particular within this story is due to what they represented in typical Victorian England society. Women were generally viewed as a social force or a source of authority which reinforces this fiction of coherent male identity (Doane and Hodges 63). The reverence for the Torah resembles Michel Foucault s idea of the power of the panopticon, which parallels the distinct power of the Torah. The action of touching the Torah with the shawl or inanimate object and proceeding to kiss it was specific to the Torah; only the Torah received this special action. In this way, the Torah appears to represent one of the varieties of the panopticon Foucault suggests, where certain behaviours and actions were directly related to the understanding that the Torah was present. Further, even though the Torah does not possess the ability to constantly observe the actions, almost all of the individuals within the synagogue were influenced by the presence of the sacred text. The relationship between the circulation of the Torah and the unique behavior parallels the power that constant surveillance has over individuals within the panopticon. Despite these similarities, Nye mentions a key characteristic of Foucault s panopticon, where power is exerted within the field of social relationships (Nye 2008, 73). Simply put, the Torah is incapable of forming the social relationships that is unique to this theory. As such, some elements of Foucault s panopticon can be applied to this situation, but it is clearly not an ideal example of this concept. To get the support of his king, Bismarck appealed to his militaristic side, as the king originally was disinclined to start a war, but after appealing to his militaristic and nationalistic sentiments, Bismarck effectively convinced his king to go to war. Almost too many to choose from. It s a skill that requires creativity and technical know how. Of course, the definition of music producer is someone who produces music. • 42. Worship God Reflection I stared out at the sunset from my post of land in the woods. The bleeding of reds, oranges, and pinks together perfectly reflected onto the shimmering lake. My stomach ached, but the taste of beauty made the pain somewhat bearable. This past summer, I went on a La Vida trip, where I was required to do a solo experience, where I was denied food and social interactions for two days. Fasting was proven to be difficult, but it was through that experience that I began to understand the concept of giving all yourself in worship to God. Most of my life I was only familiar with worshiping God with my time, resources, or through song. In denying myself food, I was shown how to worship God through fasting. From the lessons I learned at La Vida, my goals for the next four years are to do what Jesus said in Luke 10:27: to love the Lord (my) God with all (my) heart and with all (my) soul and with all (my) strength. Over these four years, I plan to worship God through every aspect of my life, including but not limited to in my academic and musical pursuits. Through my academics, I hope to be diligent in my pursuit of knowledge, to grow in my character, and to worship God. In the Liberal Arts for the Christian Life, Jeffrey C. Davis emphasized that education can be a means of worshiping the Lord. In all my pursuits of knowledge, I should study as if I m working for the Lord, not for human masters (Col. 3:23). Then, through this discipline and training of faithfulness, I can be ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 43. Jewish Funeral Traditions Essay Jewish Funeral Traditions At a Jewish funeral a candle is placed by the deceased and they are never left alone. The reason the body is not left alone is because the soul stays near the body after its separation and is aware of the love and respect for its body. The body is cleansed, washed thoroughly from head to toe (Taharah). The faces of the deceased are not allowed to face down out of respect for the deceased. • 44. The Membrane Of The Cell Membrane 1.0 Introduction 1.1 The Cell Membrane Biological cells have a membrane that separates the contents of the cell from its exterior environment and serves a number of functions. The membrane is partially permeable, facilitating and controlling what materials pass into and out of the cell. The membrane can produce different compartments within the cell in addition to allowing electrical signals to pass along them, playing a role in cell signalling and creating attachment sites for enzymes and molecules involved in the metabolism (Keeton, 1983, p. 71). 1.2 The Phospholipid Bilayer The membrane of the cell is composed of a Phospholipid Bilayer with various protein molecules floating within it phospholipids are fats and are constructed of two fatty acid tails that are hydrophobic and a Phosphate head that is hydrophilic. The heads orientate themselves towards the water molecules outside of the cell with the hydrophobic tails pointing away from the water molecules. A second tier of phospholipids forms a mirror image with the heads pointing towards the water molecules inside the cell itself. These two tiers of Phospholipids form the Phospholipid Bilayer (Keeton, 1983, p. 71). Figure 1 Phospholipid Bilayer 1.3 The Fluid Mosaic Model The Fluid Mosaic Model (Keeton, 1983, p. 71) shows that within the Phospholipid Bilayer are a number of proteins that float freely and form a mosaic pattern. These proteins can be intrinsic and exist through the complete thickness of the membrane ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

From the article of Sports Nola, Nick Kreugar wrote about Dennis Lorio: He was offensive coordinator at East St. John for the past two years, but resigned for family reasons last October. Literature Review This first article by Shirley Rosenwasser and Norma Dean shows the underrepresentation of women, it is shown by two studies made to college students. In Study 1, the masculinity/femininity of governmental office held positions were analyzed and rated as how feminine or masculine they were. One hundred thirty three college students were recruited from introductory psychology classes at Southwest Texas State University (Rosenwasser Dean, 1989). Participants were asked to describe how distinguished they thought each office was, as well as the rate of importance of each holding office. In Study 2, thirty nine men and eighty three women were recruited again from the same class (Rosenwasser Dean, 1989). However, now they were asked to read one of the four descriptions of a hypothetical candidate, and they had to base their answers on the hypothetical example. After, they needed to evaluate the candidates to show their level of efficacy. Estimating the chances of someone winning the election was the next step. And finally, participants rated the importance of each presidential task. There was a discussion following the studies, Study 1 showed that masculine descriptors were far more important than feminine descriptors. And Study 2 showing, that although, women and feminine candidates were rated more competent in feminine tasks as well as men with masculine tasks, students still rated masculine tasks more ...
