Social Policy And The Access Of The Judiciary System
What is Social Policy and the link to the Judiciary system
Social policy aims to improve human welfare and to meet human needs. Important areas of social
policy are wellbeing and welfare, unemployment insurance, pensions, the NHS, social housing, family
policy, social care, child protection, crime and criminal justice and labour issues. It was said problems
of children who were deprived or abused have been connected closely with issues concerning young
offenders (Spicker.uk, 2015).This statement involves various roles from professionals in the judiciary
system. Under the Children s Act 1998 the local authority s functions where to provide services which
support children and their families (Anon, 2015). Social workers would have had involvement during
the individual s young life and have already taken action in order to prevent the abuse therefore
preventing young offenders. In turn victim support would support the individual if they are required in
a court setting; they will advise if they are feeling worried, nervous or afraid. If an individual becomes
a young offender the Youth offending teams within the court support them by; staying in touch with a
young person if they re sentenced in custody, charged with a crime and has to go to court or if a young
person is arrested. The youth offending team work closely with the probation services (Gov.uk, 2015).

“White Man’s Burden” Essay
Rudyard Kipling s 1899 poem The White Man s Burden epitomizes the European man s view on
imperialism, Euro centrism and social Darwinism. Four centuries before 1899, such ideas were briefly
hinted in the letter from Christopher Columbus to King Ferdinand and Queen Isabella, however by
1899 these attitudes strengthened and developed fully into their complete meaning. The U.S and
Europe s imperialism in the nineteenth century were the most influential ever in the history of human
civilization. The immense motive for imperialism came from social factors including religion and
Social Darwinism.

Taking care indicates improvement of their culture until they reach that of the Euro American
standards which makes it clear that The White man s Burden proposes that the phase after exploration
is the self centered education of the colonial population. The same month Kipling s poem was
published, the Treaty of Paris was ratified and the Philippines, Puerto Rico, and Guam were acquired
by the United States while Cuba remained occupied by the military. Advocates of this acquisition
gravitated to the poem and popularized it as the literary voice of benevolent assimilation. The poem
makes clear Kipling s view of attitudes that allowed colonialism to proceed. Although a belief in the
virtues of empire was widespread at the time, there were also many dissenters; the publication of the
poem caused a flurry of arguments from both sides, most notably from Mark Twain and Henry James.
Mark Twain asserted that Kipling wrote the poem to help persuade many doubting Americans to seize
the Philippines, which seemed to be a fair point of view for that time period. In the New York Herald,
October 15, 1900, Twain describes his transformation and political awakening, in the context of the
Philippine American War. He recognizes his transformation from being Pro imperialist to Anti
imperialist. Many Anti imperialists like Mark Twain acted on the popularity of the poem to attack the
McKinley s policies as too great a burden or

They give the most basic understanding of the process by converting complex, abstract ideas to logical
ideas. They aid therapists to engage in clinical judgment and decisionmaking (Reed Sanderson 1999),
theses skills are vital throughout the processes especially in steps five to eleven. Conceptual theories
help create communication between therapists and patients (Boniface Seymour, 2012) and ensures a
client centered practice, this is especially important for the initial and detailed assessments as well as
goal setting and planning of intervention. Conceptual models deduce a number of factors affecting
occupational interruption that should be taken into account throughout the processes especially in
steps six, seven and ten (Reed Sanderson 1999). They also helps focus on areas of interest which is
vital for goal setting. They consider a number of options for intervention and assessment (Ducan

Selective Writing Style Of The Blind Man
The authors selective writing style is through first person and we are told the story through the
narrator. He is married to his wife, who they are both not given names throughout the story. The wife
has an old friend, who is coming down for a visit due to the tragic event of his wife s passed due to
cancer. Throughout the story, the narrator struggles with insight of different lifestyles, prejudiced
opinions towards the blind man, and attempting to secure a way to adjust his life for a favor his wife
inquired. The narrator will soon realize that be needs to maintain an open mind to other people s
lifestyles and needs to sees struggle through a different perspective. The limited world that the
protagonist lives in is based off a very stereotypical mindset that the authors shows to the audience.
The ignorance that the narrator shows is due to the lack of interaction that he has ever had with people
who suffer from different disabilities; let alone being blind. Some of these limitations that the narrator
had could have been caused by the relationship that his wife and the blind man had. They
communicated by sending tapes to one another. They did this through everything, even after the
narrator s wife attempted suicide from swallowing pills and capsules and washing them down with a
bottle of gin. They had a very strange but powerful relationship. It is blatantly stated throughout the
story that the narrator is not a fan of the blind man. From the start he informed

What Is The Mood Of The Lady Of Shalott By Alfred Tennyson
Kaitlyn Grifka ENG 204 Alfred Tennyson wrote a beautiful poem that can easily paint a picture into
the reader s eyes. He uses imagery, elements of poetry, setting, and exceptional word choices to help
portray the theme and emotion in his work. His work is a narrative poem, which means it has a sure
plot, setting and characters, and it should speak from a particular point of view. Hence why I choose to
write about this poem; it has stuck out to me in my mind, and it s one that I haven t forgotten about. In
his poem, The Lady of Shalott, Tennyson portrays many images that become a symbol throughout the
poem starting with the river. The first line of the whole poem says, On either side the river lie and
throughout, he brings up the river. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The first time we actually hear her name is at the end of the second stanza, And the silent isle
imbowers The Lady of Shalott. (line 16 17). We see this happen numerous times throughout the poem
and we begin to see that The Lady of Shalott is a refrain, which is something that the writer uses over
and over again. It starts to compel us in a way; you can definitely feel it when you read the poem out
loud. Another thing that I noticed when reading the poem is that the writer doesn t actually provide us
with physical details of the lady. It would be something that could help the reader visually see her and
paint a picture of the main character into their minds while reading the poem. At times, it seems that
the writer is doing this to hold back the image of the lady, to purposely prevent us of visually seeing
her in our heads. There are certain parts though, like line 71, where the writer helps us feel the strength
of her personality. Or when the moon was overhead, Came two young lovers lately wed; I am half sick
of shadows. Said The Lady of Shalott. It goes to show her strong will and independence to make it
through this curse. Finally when the lady dies, she moved away from the imprisonment to being free,
but it cost her everything. For ere she reached upon the tide The first house by the water side, Singing

Isis Religion

world, and then was Mourner. Could be Isis mourning Osirissuppressed by Christianity. Today, she is
worshiped by some Pagans. This article will discuss her history, her cult, and her mythology.
Isis History
Isis started out as an ancient Egyptian goddess, worshiped as the Divine Mother.
As a goddess, she not only was a mother goddess, she, with her husband the god Osiris, taught the arts
of civilization to humans, and supported the reign of the Pharaohs, or kings, of ancient Egypt.
She was also the goddess of magic, and was frequently portrayed with her son Horus on her lap,
emphasizing her role as mother.

Afterwards, Isis restores Osiris to life, and she becomes pregnant by him and gives birth to their son,
Horus.
The story ends with Horus avenging the death of his father on Set.
The myth of Isis and Osiris bears many similarities to similar myths of the Goddess and the
Dying/Rising God of the ancient Middle East and Mediterranean.
These myths together influenced the Jesus story in Christianity, especially the parts with Mary
Magdalene in them, such as Jesus crucifixion, death, and resurrection.
These facts show that Isis is a goddess who held and still holds appeal for her dealing with universal
concerns.
Conclusion
Isis started out as a popular goddess in ancient Egypt, who blessed the reign of kings, healed the sick,
protected the dead, raised her husband from the dead, who could change fate and destiny with magic,
and who was the ideal mother.
These aspects of her ensured she would become popular outside Egypt, and therefore her cult spread

The Change in Food Production in Pollan’s The Ominvore’s...
Food production has changed drastically throughout the span of this country s history, shifting from
small scale farms into mega facilities that horde animals inhumanely. In Pollan s The Ominvore s
Dilemma, he showcases the transformative nature of food production throughout the years, by
emphasizing the commercialization and industrialization aspects of this continual food evolution.
Though Pollan expresses his opinions on modern day methods of food production and categorization
of these means of production, he experiences the dilemma that is commonly faced by many
individuals in this day and age. Therefore, he undergoes the endeavor to find the solution to this
national dilemma.
He poses the question: what should we have for dinner? ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Many consumers are not able to see where their food comes from, similarly to how the corn no longer
has the information of how it was produced. The change in food production also is evident in the
decline in personal nature via packaging. Two centuries ago, people were able to purchase their corn
from the farm where the corn had been grown and most likely where they had developed a more
personal linkage with the farmer on a local level. Now, the connection between the source of
consumer s food production and the consumer itself are separated by thousands of miles, lacking
communication, acknowledgement, and awareness of the production process. Pollan implements
something as simple as a produce sack to showcase the reality that modern day consumers are denied
their right to know where and how their food was developed, violating one foundation of food justice:
the right to know what one is eating.
A possible explanation for why food production has changed so much can be that its consumers have
also evolved as a society the commercialization of agriculture has culminated this alteration within the
industry. The consumer s desire to connect back with their ancestors can be easily ascertained by
going to healthier markets like Wholefoods, among others. Pollan compares Wholefoods to a good
quality bookstore, filled with extensive nutritional vocabulary on their packaging. However, much of

Iago s Use Of The Word Officer In Othello
An officer as defined by the Merriam Webster dictionary is one who holds an office of authority or
command, but in Shakespeare s Othello, the word officer becomes characterized with a connotation of
trustworthiness and friendship. Othello almost exclusively uses this word as a way of conveying his
trust for the person he s referring to, showing his naivety in regards to his judgment. Shakespeare s use
of the word officer in Othello to convey trust and friendship helps to illustrate that trust tends to be put
in the wrong place when one s judgment is clouded by emotion. From the very start of the play, Iago s
ill intent for Othello is illustrated very clearly. In act I scene I, in a conversation with Roderigo, Iago
mocks Othello for his decision to place Michael Cassio as his lieutenant over Iago, And in conclusion,

making it light to Cassio. Cassio, I love thee But never more be officer of mine. Look if my gentle
love be not raised up! I ll make thee an example. This quote from Othello is ironic because he truly
believe Iago is trying to make Cassio look better to Othello so that Othello will have mercy on him,
when in reality Iago s intentions are the complete opposite. The irony of this quote is also found in
Othello s dismissal of Cassio from not only his position as lieutenant, but also his position as one of
Othello s most trusted men. Othello begins to find a confidant in Iago in this scene and genuinely
believes that Iago is honest with him, and makes Iago a source of comfort for himself. In this scene
Othello is irate that Cassio has disgraced his trust and his position, and in his anger, dismisses Cassio
while simultaneously promoting Iago to a higher rank in terms of

Greed In The Pardoners Tale
Throughout literature, relationships can often be found between the author of a story and the story that
he writes, whether intentional or not. In Geoffrey Chaucer s story,
Canterbury Tales, many of the characters on the pilgrimage make this statement evident with the tales
that they tell. Such a distinct relationship can be made between the character of the Pardoner and the
tale that he tells.
Through the Prologue to the Pardoner s tale, the character of the Pardoner is revealed. Although the
Pardoner displays many important traits, the most prevalent is his greed. Throughout the prologue, the
Pardoner displays his greed and even admits that the only thing he cares about is money: quot;I preach

Although the Pardoner is extremely greedy, he continues to try and teach that
quot;Avarice is the root of all evil quot; (6). He explains to the pilgrims how money is the root of all
evil, and then he takes the money from them in exchange for forgiveness of their sins.
This action could be seen in two ways. Perhaps the Pardoner is a very greedy, trecherous man, or
perhaps Chaucer is trying to jab at Christianity by alluding to Christ. The characters in his tale display
great hypocrisy as well. As the tale begins, the friends all act very trustworthy and faithful towards all
of their friends. They nobly make a decision to risk their lives while trying to slay their friend s
murderer. As they talk about their challenge, they pledge quot;to live and die each of them for the
other, / As if he were his own blood brother quot; (241 242). At the end of the tale, the quot;brothers
quot; begin to reveal their true nature. They all turn on each other in an attempt to steal the treasure for
themselves. All of the loyalty, which they had pledged, was simply a lie and no faithfulness remained.
While the two older quot;brother quot; plotted to kill the younger, the younger quot;brother quot;
plotted
quot;to kill them both and never to repent quot; (388). Thus, these so called faithful quot;brothers

What Were The Main Problems With The Articles Of 1787
The Articles of Confederation, ratified on March 1, 1781, created the structure for the confederation of
the 13 colonies that fought in the American Revolution. It set up a federal government with very
limited powers, and it gave most of the power to the 13 states. Within a short period of time, the
Constitution of 1787 was ratified to solve the problems that the Articles of Confederation did not
address. The Articles of Confederation had major problems, caused by the fear of a distant national
government, which would get solved six years later in the Constitution. One main problem with the
Articles of Confederation was a weak national government, where Congress did not have the power to
levy taxes. In Article 8 of the Articles of Confederation, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This was a major problem because even though Congress was the only component of government,
they did not have the power to force the states to do anything. The government was unable to force or
interpret laws. In the Articles of Confederation, Article 2 states, Each state retains its sovereignty,
freedom, and independence, and every power, jurisdiction, and right, which is not by this
Confederation expressly delegated to the United States, in Congress assembled (Articles of
Confederation, Article II). This declares that each state can keep their jurisdiction, which meant that
each state has its own power to regulate their own laws. Moreover, any rights and powers that are not
given to Congress by the Articles of Confederation are kept by the state. Since the government did not
have an executive branch, there was no one to enforce the laws created by Congress. Theoretically,
Congress could raise an army, but they could not force any states to send people to go to war or force
the states to give them any equipment necessary for the war. This shows how little power Congress
actually had under the Articles of Confederation. Furthermore, even if Congress passed a law for the
citizens of the United States, the states could ignore the law and there would be no consequences.

Dramatic irony is when the audience or reader knows the words and actions of the characters in a
work of literature, but certain characters in the story do not know them. The reader or audience has a
greater knowledge of many of the characters themselves. Shakespeare employs dramatic irony in
many of his tragedies; so that the audience is engaged, and so they are able to witness characters errors
in their action, predict the fate of the characters, and experience feelings of tragedy and grief. As a
tragedy, Hamlet deals with the problems that arise as a result of Hamlet s attempt to avenge his father
s death. Throughout the play Hamlet is on the search of his self, while his actions are shaping who he
really is. As he is attempting to ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
His intellectual powers are of the highest order. (Kittredge, 18)
The irony found in the characterization of the antagonist is balanced by an equal irony in the
presentation of the protagonist. Hamlet is present at the court gathering dressed in black, the color of
mourning, for his deceased father. He is not a man of the world, but rather protesting and thoughtful
and by himself. His first words say that Claudius is A little more than kin and less than kind, indicating
a dissimilarity in values between the new king and himself, thus, in a sense, demoting himself to the
position of an outcast, one who counts for nothing. At this point Hamlet is disoriented and does not
know who he really is; he is beginning to lose his sanity. And, incredibly, he is the greatest of people,
in terms of what really matters in life one s spiritual ideals or morals. He is combating himself because
he is attempting to do what is right for Denmark but before everyone s eyes he is evil. This outcast is a
prince; he is a genius. His speeches confront problems which most easily besets men of genius
(Coleridge, 345). His first soliloquy illustrate his idealism by emphasizing the worthlessness of the
corrupt world and the frailty of women, which contribute to his raging madness,
O, that this too too solid flesh would melt

Expectations Great Expectations
The Victorian era was an era of social change; the idea that one is not predestined to the social class
one was born into became an ideology for the lower classes (House 575). Becoming a gentleman was
the goal. The fascination of being a gentleman did not escape Dickens who came to age when the
gentleman allure was most prominent (Gilmour 577). As much as he was effected by the abstract
notion of how middle and lower middle classes perceived gentlemen, he also noticed his surrounding s
moral values changing (House 573). Being a gentleman in Victorian Britain meant valuing rank over
humanity, and the story of Pip s rise to fortune in Great Expectations mirrors those values. While
simultaneously expressing the reservations Dickens had to these social values. Dickens was in many
ways a writer for and, probably most importantly, about the people. Which is why ... Show more

First and foremost, he needs to be in possession of money. Pip concludes at a young age that in order
to stop being common (Dickens 71) he needs to have money and even believes that Miss Havisham
will one day be his benefactor enabling him to escape his dreadfully common state (133). Secondly,
one needed to have the general appearance of a gentleman which meant proper attire, manner and
articulation. When Pip comes into handsome property he is advised by Mr. Jaggers to improve his
attire before arriving in London to better suit the look of a gentleman and to not have working clothes
(141). Thirdly, being a gentleman meant moving in the right circles. Pip needed to move to London in
order to achieve his gentlemanly status and thus had to give up his position working alongside Joe.
Lastly, education seemed vital, as after Pip s visit to the Satis House he wants Biddy to educate him so
that he is less ignorant in Estella s company (73). From the start the reader does not get the idea that
being a gentleman entails compassion or morality, rather it mostly consists of material

Concussions And Side Effects Of Concussions In The NFL
In 2012 over 3.8 million concussions were reported, double of what it was just ten years earlier. With
the recent increase of technology in those years we are now able to notice that this is a major issue.
These injuries can be life changing and perhaps the scariest part is that they ve been around longer
than the games they occur in themselves. In the past, players would be hit by a 250 pound man
running at full speed with their head thrown around and just walk it off , maybe sitting out for a couple
of plays. Within the last few years, the National Football League has been under heavy pressure to do
more to prevent and diagnose these concussions. However, even with these recent advances that have
been made, the NFL is still not doing enough as it continues to avoid any claims of responsibility. Just
recently, a large group containing thousands of current and former NFL players agreed to a court
settlement of over $750 million with the league itself. The case was brought up by the players who
claimed they suffered side effects of concussions during their NFL playing careers. They brought in
third party doctors and administrators to help determine how to split up most of the money in a
manner that gives the most money to the most qualified and so on. When this is complete, the first half
of this settlement will be dispersed over the first three years, and the remainder within twenty
(Heitner). Before we start, there is one underlying issue that plays a key role in this

General Principles Of Organization Law Essay
There are number of General principles which have guided the courts in their approach to organisation
law, both in terms of development of general law or interpretation of legislation. Three of these
principles are: 1. Non interference principle 2. Commercial Reality principle 3. Non Prescriptive
Principle Director s Duty at General Law The duty to act in good faith and for proper purpose
Directors are the one who manages and directs the company. Therefore, there powers must be
exercised not only in the manner required by law but also for the benefit of the company in its
processes and profits as the main purpose of the company is to make profit. If a company fails to make
profits, they have no other option but to shut down. Also, directors have to follow laws which are
under Corporations Act 2001 which consists of duties of directors and their responsibilities (Mills vs
Mills). Governance and director s role move hand in hand Directors role play a vital role in
governance of a company. Section 180 reinforces the general law principle that a person in a fiduciary
position should not make any gain by virtue of that position. Worries of Corporate Governance: Have
to deal with conflicts of ideas and interests within the management. It is the duty of Director to act in a
good faith and for the benefits of the company. Have to secure the information which is given to

The Great Leaders in China
Genghis Khan, first known as Temujin, was the son of a leader of a Mongolian tribe. He was brought
up in a time of warring tribes and factions. Genghis Khan was a fierce and brilliant military
commander, who achieved unprecedented success in setting Ghengis Khanup an Empire which
stretched across Europe and Asia. His Mongol armies left a trail of fear, death and destruction. But, he
also created a vibrant empire with a common language, booming trade, tolerance of religion and some
basic customs and laws( Pettinger., 2010). Arguably the most famous Asian of the last 2,000 years,

Instil a level of discipline within your organization such that you will do so much better in whatever
your industry is in. Really, no management technique or framework can replace the power of simple
discipline. At no single, crucial moment in his life did he suddenly acquire his genius at warfare, his
ability to inspire the loyalty of his followers, or his unprecedented skill for organizing on a global
scale. These derived not from epiphanic enlightenment or formal schooling but from a persistent cycle
of pragmatic learning, experimental adaptation and constant revision driven by his uniquely
disciplined mind and focused will(Ryan, 2012). When battling the nomadic tribes of Mongolia, Khan
would prepare several military tactics and traps before that before facing off with his enemy. He was
extremely meticulous and planned his attacks very carefully. As a result, he managed to defeated
several other factions, and eventually even the great city of Beijing. Similarly, whatever business,

By being prepared and ensuring that your men are prepared, you prepare yourself for victory. The

Sergeant First Class Jackson s Warrior Ethos
Sergeant First Class Jackson s Warrior Ethos Sergeant First Class Jackson was a very humble warrior.
In his cubical, you would find American Flags, Daily Bread pamphlets from the chaplain, maintenance
magazines and a candy dish which we all loved. He never boasted about his accomplishments, but you
knew there was something special about this gentle giant. As he and I talked prior to him undergoing
surgery, he told me that he was assigned to the 507th Maintenance Company during his assignment to
Fort Bliss, Texas. This company stood out in my mind because it was the infamous Maintenance
Company which Private Jessica Lynch was assigned to when she became a prisoner of war. Staff
Sergeant Jackson was the responsible for the maintenance of the fleet of vehicles that were partaking
in the in the convoy. The convoy departed Kuwait, led by the Company Commander, Captain Troy K.
King, en route to Iraq on the first day of the war in 2003. When many of the vehicles had become
bogged down by the sand (Michael Luo 2003), Staff Sergeant Jackson moved forward to execute his
functions and keep the convoy moving. The convoy became disoriented and was immediately
surrounded by the enemy in Nasiriyah, Iraq. Staff Sergeant Jackson immediately began to return fire
to help defend the convoy and protect his fellow Soldiers (Jackson 2014). He continued to fire until he
was wounded and unable to fire his weapon. During the fog of war, Staff Sergeant Jackson

American Carnival Masks
Venetian carnival masks are a centuries old tradition of Venice , Italy . The purpose of the masks was
to hide the identity of the people who wore them . People usually wore them at carnivals or special
occasions , usually people like wearing them so they can speak to others without them judging them
for example if they ve had a rough past and they don t want people to know how they are because
maybe they wont want to speak to them , or maybe they like to wear them so they wont have romantic
encounters , or maybe they just want to tell people their ideas or express there feeling without being
judged or laughed at. There were different types of masks for example there is the bautta mask which
covers the whole face and it was a traditional piece of art . To describe the mask you can say it has a
stubborn chin line , it has no mouth and has lots of gliding . There is also the Columbina and it is also
known as Columbine and Columbino , and this mask is a half mask and it is often highly decorated
with gold , silver , crystals and feathers . This mask is held up to the face by a baton or it could also be
tied up with ribbons as with most other Venetian masks . Another mask is ... Show more content on

The incidence and prevalence of these differential diagnoses are another important consideration.
When considering Appendix B in further detail, AP has an incidence rate between 9.8 to 37.8 per
100,000. In Canada, approximately 15,100 individuals are diagnosed with pancreatitis each year. The
incidence tends to be highest between the age category of 40 70 years old (Teshima, Bridges Fedorak,
2012). The prevalence rate of 2.5 percent of AP (Yadav Lowenfels, 2013). AP is however more likely
in men than in women. Additionally, certain drugs may also increase the incidence of AP such as
azithromycin, or estrogen progesterone combination pills. AMI has a prevalence of 2.5 percent.

Another important heuristic to consider in the case is when diffuse, dull abdominal pain is associated
with nausea and vomiting, it is essential to consider a diagnosis of pancreatitis (Banks, Conwell,
Toskes, 2010). Another significant heuristic to consider for Ms. Roe is that since she had a recent
extensive surgery and has been on nonsteroidal anti inflammatory drugs, it would be important to
consider PUD as a differential diagnosis (Ramakrishnan, Salinas, 2007).
The significant biopsychosocial issues that should be considered for Ms. Roe include assessing current
stressors, previous psychological trauma, and societal, and cultural factors. Since she has had a
complicated and prolonged illness process due to her Interstitial Lung Disease. Additionally,
developing another acute disease process during her hospitalization has been difficult for Ms. Roe.
The biological change of having a prolonged illness has impacted how she feels about herself and has
resulted in feelings of inadequacy. This has significantly affected her mental health status and has
worsened her depression. This disease process has affected her quality of life and has impacted her
ability to work. She has had an alternation in her role within her family and within her community.
She often describes feelings of isolation and feels disconnected from her First Nation

Credibility Judgement Of Information
Credibility judgment of information largely rests upon three elements of communication: source,
message, and medium (Metzger, Flanagin, Eyal, Lemus, McCann, 2003). Source credibility refers to
the degree to which individuals perceive an information source as reliable. A source of information
may be a person, a group, or an organization, each of which has its own characteristics that may affect
credibility perception such as ability (expertise) and motivation (trustworthiness) to provide accurate
and trustful information (Tormala Petty, 2004). Message credibility is an evaluation of characteristics
of the message communicated such as informational quality, accuracy, currency and language
intensity, which create believability (Metzger et

Comparing The Film Good Night And Good Luck
The movie Good Night, and Good Luck portrays what I believe to be one of the main hardships
broadcast journalists face, which is voicing out the truth. This movie amazes me on how much history
continues on to repeat itself, in being so afraid of real news being known. Towards the beginning of
the movie, there was a scene where the different reporters were saying different stories to cover. When
one of the journalists suggested the topic of the case before the supreme court involving the
constitutionality of a section of the internal security act...provides for the deportation of any aliens if
he becomes a communist after entering [the United States] (Good Night, and Good Luck), there was
no verbal response but chuckles and laughs from the reporters. ... Show more content on

In the movie, the character of Mr. Paley says to Morrow that they don t make the news, [they] report
the news (Good Night, and Good Luck). This quote can either be viewed as favorable or against
broadcasted news we see on the television. Because as quoted by Paley, reporters are not to make the
news, their only responsibility is to report, meaning that they have comply within the boundaries that
they are given. However, this can cause danger to our society because it blinds America to the reality
of the rest of the world. A modern day example of this would be the trending topic of Kanye West
siding with Donald Trump s ideas. It is with disappointment to me that this is what I am hearing on the
radio and from other people that I live with. There are so much more other news out there in the world
that needs the same if not even more highlight on the news. But again, the spiral of silence concept is
affecting news reporters and other journalists, preventing them to put out news because people may

Thomas Jefferson Book Report
Thomas Jefferson was the third president of the United States with a very interesting life. This book
starts with the death of Jefferson and then goes into detail with his desires and accomplishments of
Jefferson. The author of this book is Andrew Burstein a great admirer of Jefferson. He is a professor at
the University of Tulsa and writer of many other scholarly articles about Thomas Jefferson. The
original version of this book was published in 2001. Jefferson was a very mysterious person starting
with his desire of being buried in Monticello to the relationships with his slaves. It is especially very
interesting his case with Sally Hemings since it has been proven to of been intimate.

It does not go in chronological order nor does it way its work up from Jefferson s death. This book is
almost reversed chronological order because it does start with Jefferson laying in his deathbed. But the
book jumps from subject to subject. History books are not my favorite but this one in speciality I did
not like for several reasons. The main reason is the order of this book. Chronological order is the way
I would prefered to of read it. The vocabulary was higher level and it is understandable because it is a
nonfiction history adult book but it was very time consuming looking up all these words I ve never
seen before. Most of the book focuses on letters that Jefferson wrote during his lifetime but the author
could have focused less on this subject and more on the actual life of Jefferson. The order of this book
was not the best but it was a very interesting topic. This book went in detail of what Jefferson left
behind after his death like his letters and quotes. Another thing, the author of this book showed very
much his strong biased opinion about Jefferson on several parts of the book. Burstein tries his best to
justify some of Jefferson s errors which changes some facts to the opinions of the author. I did enjoy
the chapter where he talk about the University of Virginia and the chapter that focuses on Sally
Hemings and his offspring with

As I was saying that there were not many technological advancements in regrowth. One I did find was
by the National Science Foundation who has conducted a research program as they have come up with
an equation for leaf mass per area which will help understand what drives plants behaviours based on

plant regrowth. One representative from the foundation said We are aiming to usher in a new era in the
science of leaf economics by merging plant anatomy with mathematics and ecology in a unique way,
This would help speed up regrowth after natural disasters in the future. Though volcanoes can cause

Taking a Look at Cassava
Cassava (Manihot esculenta) is a tuberous root crop that serves as a source of carbohydrate for more
than 800 million people worldwide and its cultivation is estimated to cover more than 18.9 million
hectors (FAO, 2011). It is a vital source of food and income to resource poor farmers (especially
women) in the tropics and staple food crop for nearly 200 million people in the sub Saharan Africa
(Liu et al., 2011; Nyaboga et al., 2013). In Tanzania, cassava ranks only second to maize and third to
rice, with its calories contribution per day being 15 % (FAO 2009).
Cassava production in Africa is constrained with various pests and viral diseases especially cassava
brown streak and cassava mosaic diseases. Research efforts to genetically improve resistance against
viral diseases, drought, postharvest deterioration and nutrients fortification of this crop are underway
(Zang et al., 2005; Vanderschuren et al., 2009; Nyaboga et al., 2013). All these efforts are through
genetic transformation method which relies on the ability of cassava to regenerate from somatic
embryos to full plant. Due to heterozygozity nature of cassava, it is difficult to use its zygotic embryos
as starting materials for genetic transformation protocols (Raemakers et al., 1997; Sarria et al., 2000;
Taylor et al., 2001; Siritunga and Sayre 2003). Instead, organised structures from somatic embryo
cotyledons and friable embryogenic calli (FECs) have been developed (Schöpke et al., 1996; Taylor et
al., 2004). FECs

  • 3. “White Man’s Burden” Essay Rudyard Kipling s 1899 poem The White Man s Burden epitomizes the European man s view on imperialism, Euro centrism and social Darwinism. Four centuries before 1899, such ideas were briefly hinted in the letter from Christopher Columbus to King Ferdinand and Queen Isabella, however by 1899 these attitudes strengthened and developed fully into their complete meaning. The U.S and Europe s imperialism in the nineteenth century were the most influential ever in the history of human civilization. The immense motive for imperialism came from social factors including religion and Social Darwinism. Missionaries frequently rushed to Africa and Asia to convert its people to Christianity. On the other hand, social Darwinism argued the survival of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Taking care indicates improvement of their culture until they reach that of the Euro American standards which makes it clear that The White man s Burden proposes that the phase after exploration is the self centered education of the colonial population. The same month Kipling s poem was published, the Treaty of Paris was ratified and the Philippines, Puerto Rico, and Guam were acquired by the United States while Cuba remained occupied by the military. Advocates of this acquisition gravitated to the poem and popularized it as the literary voice of benevolent assimilation. The poem makes clear Kipling s view of attitudes that allowed colonialism to proceed. Although a belief in the virtues of empire was widespread at the time, there were also many dissenters; the publication of the poem caused a flurry of arguments from both sides, most notably from Mark Twain and Henry James. Mark Twain asserted that Kipling wrote the poem to help persuade many doubting Americans to seize the Philippines, which seemed to be a fair point of view for that time period. In the New York Herald, October 15, 1900, Twain describes his transformation and political awakening, in the context of the Philippine American War. He recognizes his transformation from being Pro imperialist to Anti imperialist. Many Anti imperialists like Mark Twain acted on the popularity of the poem to attack the McKinley s policies as too great a burden or ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 6. What Is The Mood Of The Lady Of Shalott By Alfred Tennyson Kaitlyn Grifka ENG 204 Alfred Tennyson wrote a beautiful poem that can easily paint a picture into the reader s eyes. He uses imagery, elements of poetry, setting, and exceptional word choices to help portray the theme and emotion in his work. His work is a narrative poem, which means it has a sure plot, setting and characters, and it should speak from a particular point of view. Hence why I choose to write about this poem; it has stuck out to me in my mind, and it s one that I haven t forgotten about. In his poem, The Lady of Shalott, Tennyson portrays many images that become a symbol throughout the poem starting with the river. The first line of the whole poem says, On either side the river lie and throughout, he brings up the river. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The first time we actually hear her name is at the end of the second stanza, And the silent isle imbowers The Lady of Shalott. (line 16 17). We see this happen numerous times throughout the poem and we begin to see that The Lady of Shalott is a refrain, which is something that the writer uses over and over again. It starts to compel us in a way; you can definitely feel it when you read the poem out loud. Another thing that I noticed when reading the poem is that the writer doesn t actually provide us with physical details of the lady. It would be something that could help the reader visually see her and paint a picture of the main character into their minds while reading the poem. At times, it seems that the writer is doing this to hold back the image of the lady, to purposely prevent us of visually seeing her in our heads. There are certain parts though, like line 71, where the writer helps us feel the strength of her personality. Or when the moon was overhead, Came two young lovers lately wed; I am half sick of shadows. Said The Lady of Shalott. It goes to show her strong will and independence to make it through this curse. Finally when the lady dies, she moved away from the imprisonment to being free, but it cost her everything. For ere she reached upon the tide The first house by the water side, Singing in her song she died, The Lady of Shalott. Under tower and balcony, By garden wall ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Could be Isis mourning Osirissuppressed by Christianity. Today, she is worshiped by some Pagans. This article will discuss her history, her cult, and her mythology. Isis History Isis started out as an ancient Egyptian goddess, worshiped as the Divine Mother. As a goddess, she not only was a mother goddess, she, with her husband the god Osiris, taught the arts of civilization to humans, and supported the reign of the Pharaohs, or kings, of ancient Egypt. Afterwards, Isis restores Osiris to life, and she becomes pregnant by him and gives birth to their son, Horus. The story ends with Horus avenging the death of his father on Set. The myth of Isis and Osiris bears many similarities to similar myths of the Goddess and the Dying/Rising God of the ancient Middle East and Mediterranean. These myths together influenced the Jesus story in Christianity, especially the parts with Mary Magdalene in them, such as Jesus crucifixion, death, and resurrection. These facts show that Isis is a goddess who held and still holds appeal for her dealing with universal concerns. Conclusion Isis started out as a popular goddess in ancient Egypt, who blessed the reign of kings, healed the sick, protected the dead, raised her husband from the dead, who could change fate and destiny with magic, and who was the ideal mother. These aspects of her ensured she would become popular outside Egypt, and therefore her cult spread from Egypt throughout the Mediterranean, and even northward to Great

Food production has changed drastically throughout the span of this country s history, shifting from small scale farms into mega facilities that horde animals inhumanely. In Pollan s The Ominvore s Dilemma, he showcases the transformative nature of food production throughout the years, by emphasizing the commercialization and industrialization aspects of this continual food evolution. Though Pollan expresses his opinions on modern day methods of food production and categorization of these means of production, he experiences the dilemma that is commonly faced by many individuals in this day and age. Therefore, he undergoes the endeavor to find the solution to this national dilemma. He poses the question: what should we have for dinner? ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Many consumers are not able to see where their food comes from, similarly to how the corn no longer has the information of how it was produced. The change in food production also is evident in the decline in personal nature via packaging. Two centuries ago, people were able to purchase their corn from the farm where the corn had been grown and most likely where they had developed a more personal linkage with the farmer on a local level. Now, the connection between the source of consumer s food production and the consumer itself are separated by thousands of miles, lacking communication, acknowledgement, and awareness of the production process. Pollan implements something as simple as a produce sack to showcase the reality that modern day consumers are denied their right to know where and how their food was developed, violating one foundation of food justice: the right to know what one is eating. A possible explanation for why food production has changed so much can be that its consumers have also evolved as a society the commercialization of agriculture has culminated this alteration within the industry. The consumer s desire to connect back with their ancestors can be easily ascertained by going to healthier markets like Wholefoods, among others. Pollan compares Wholefoods to a good quality bookstore, filled with extensive nutritional vocabulary on their packaging. However, much of it is not ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 10. Iago s Use Of The Word Officer In Othello An officer as defined by the Merriam Webster dictionary is one who holds an office of authority or command, but in Shakespeare s Othello, the word officer becomes characterized with a connotation of trustworthiness and friendship. Othello almost exclusively uses this word as a way of conveying his trust for the person he s referring to, showing his naivety in regards to his judgment. Shakespeare s use of the word officer in Othello to convey trust and friendship helps to illustrate that trust tends to be put in the wrong place when one s judgment is clouded by emotion. From the very start of the play, Iago s ill intent for Othello is illustrated very clearly. In act I scene I, in a conversation with Roderigo, Iago mocks Othello for his decision to place Michael Cassio as his lieutenant over Iago, And in conclusion, Nonsuits my mediators. Cassio, I love thee But never more be officer of mine. Look if my gentle love be not raised up! I ll make thee an example. This quote from Othello is ironic because he truly believe Iago is trying to make Cassio look better to Othello so that Othello will have mercy on him, when in reality Iago s intentions are the complete opposite. The irony of this quote is also found in Othello s dismissal of Cassio from not only his position as lieutenant, but also his position as one of Othello s most trusted men. Othello begins to find a confidant in Iago in this scene and genuinely believes that Iago is honest with him, and makes Iago a source of comfort for himself. In this scene Othello is irate that Cassio has disgraced his trust and his position, and in his anger, dismisses Cassio while simultaneously promoting Iago to a higher rank in terms of ... It includes the Impressionist and Cubist styles of his early period, abstract work from his transition to Surrealism, and covers the religious and scientific themes of his classic period. Salvador Dali was born into a middle class family on May 11th 1904 in Figures, Spain. During his lifetime, he was an eccentric painter, writer, sculptor and experimental film maker. In Dali s early years of painting he experimented at first with landscapes, most of which were of his home in Figueres, Spain. Dali also made paintings of the surrounding area of his family s summer home, in the seaside town of Cadaques. Dali s transitional period was between 1927 and 1929, these were years of experimentation. In this period gravel, rocks, cork, and other materials can be noted on his canvases. • 13. Greed In The Pardoners Tale Throughout literature, relationships can often be found between the author of a story and the story that he writes, whether intentional or not. In Geoffrey Chaucer s story, Canterbury Tales, many of the characters on the pilgrimage make this statement evident with the tales that they tell. Such a distinct relationship can be made between the character of the Pardoner and the tale that he tells. Through the Prologue to the Pardoner s tale, the character of the Pardoner is revealed. Although the Pardoner displays many important traits, the most prevalent is his greed. He explains to the pilgrims how money is the root of all evil, and then he takes the money from them in exchange for forgiveness of their sins. This action could be seen in two ways. Perhaps the Pardoner is a very greedy, trecherous man, or perhaps Chaucer is trying to jab at Christianity by alluding to Christ. The characters in his tale display great hypocrisy as well. As the tale begins, the friends all act very trustworthy and faithful towards all of their friends. They nobly make a decision to risk their lives while trying to slay their friend s murderer. As they talk about their challenge, they pledge quot;to live and die each of them for the other, / As if he were his own blood brother quot; (241 242). At the end of the tale, the quot;brothers quot; begin to reveal their true nature. They all turn on each other in an attempt to steal the treasure for themselves. All of the loyalty, which they had pledged, was simply a lie and no faithfulness remained. While the two older quot;brother quot; plotted to kill the younger, the younger quot;brother quot; plotted quot;to kill them both and never to repent quot; (388). What Were The Main Problems With The Articles Of 1787 The Articles of Confederation, ratified on March 1, 1781, created the structure for the confederation of the 13 colonies that fought in the American Revolution. It set up a federal government with very limited powers, and it gave most of the power to the 13 states. Within a short period of time, the Constitution of 1787 was ratified to solve the problems that the Articles of Confederation did not address. The Articles of Confederation had major problems, caused by the fear of a distant national government, which would get solved six years later in the Constitution. This declares that each state can keep their jurisdiction, which meant that each state has its own power to regulate their own laws. Moreover, any rights and powers that are not given to Congress by the Articles of Confederation are kept by the state. Since the government did not have an executive branch, there was no one to enforce the laws created by Congress. Theoretically, Congress could raise an army, but they could not force any states to send people to go to war or force the states to give them any equipment necessary for the war. Taking a Look at Cassava Cassava (Manihot esculenta) is a tuberous root crop that serves as a source of carbohydrate for more than 800 million people worldwide and its cultivation is estimated to cover more than 18.9 million hectors (FAO, 2011). It is a vital source of food and income to resource poor farmers (especially women) in the tropics and staple food crop for nearly 200 million people in the sub Saharan Africa (Liu et al., 2011; Nyaboga et al., 2013). In Tanzania, cassava ranks only second to maize and third to rice, with its calories contribution per day being 15 % (FAO 2009). Cassava production in Africa is constrained with various pests and viral diseases especially cassava brown streak and cassava mosaic diseases. Research efforts to genetically improve resistance against viral diseases, drought, postharvest deterioration and nutrients fortification of this crop are underway (Zang et al., 2005; Vanderschuren et al., 2009; Nyaboga et al., 2013). All these efforts are through genetic transformation method which relies on the ability of cassava to regenerate from somatic embryos to full plant. Due to heterozygozity nature of cassava, it is difficult to use its zygotic embryos as starting materials for genetic transformation protocols (Raemakers et al., 1997; Sarria et al., 2000; Taylor et al., 2001; Siritunga and Sayre 2003). Instead, organised structures from somatic embryo cotyledons and friable embryogenic calli (FECs) have been developed (Schöpke et al., 1996; Taylor et al., 2004). FECs ...
