Published classroom materials form the basis of syllabuses, drive teacher professional development, and have a potentially huge influence on learners, teachers and education systems. All teachers also create their own materials, whether a few sentences on a blackboard, a highly-structured fully-realised online course, or anything in between. Despite this, the knowledge and skills needed to create effective language learning materials are rarely part of teacher training, and are mostly learnt by trial and error.
Knowledge and skills frameworks, generally called competency frameworks, for ELT teachers, trainers and managers have existed for a few years now. However, until I created one for my MA dissertation, there wasn’t one drawing together what we need to know and do to be able to effectively produce language learning materials.
This webinar will introduce you to my framework, highlighting the key competencies I identified from my research. It will also show how anybody involved in language teaching (any language, not just English!), teacher training, managing schools or developing language learning materials can benefit from using the framework.

• Gender inequality remains a major barrier
• Major strides since 1990, but gender equity
is not yet worldwide.
• The disadvantages facing women and girls
are a major source of inequality.
• Women and girls are discriminated against
in health, education, political
representation, labor markets, etc.
7. The Gender Inequality Index (GII)
The GII is an inequality index. It measures gender inequalities in three important
aspects of human development:
1. Reproductive health, measured by maternal mortality ratio and adolescent
birth rates
2. Empowerment, measured by proportion of parliamentary seats occupied by
females and proportion of adult females and males aged 25 years and older with
at least some secondary education
3. Economic status, expressed as labor market participation and measured by
labor force participation rate of female and male populations aged 15 years and
older.
8. The Gender Inequality Index (GII) Continued
The GII was created to better expose differences in the distribution of
achievements between women and men. It measures the human
development costs of gender inequality, thus the higher the GII value the
more disparities between females and males and the more loss to
human development.
In other words, a lower GII number signifies
greater equality.
