Human development index vs
gender development index

The Human Development Index (HDI) and the Gender
Development Index (GDI) are both indices developed by the
United Nations to measure different aspects of human
development and well-being. Here's a brief comparison:
1. Human Development Index (HDI):
- HDI is a composite index that takes into account three key
dimensions: health (life expectancy at birth), education (mean
years of schooling and expected years of schooling), and
standard of living (Gross National Income per capita).
- It provides a broad overview of the overall development
status of a country, considering factors that affect the well-
being of both men and women.
- HDI doesn't explicitly focus on gender disparities and is
more generalized in its approach.
2. Gender Development Index (GDI):
- GDI is also a composite index, but it specifically focuses on gender
disparities in human development.
- It takes into account the same dimensions as HDI (health, education,
and standard of living) but measures them separately for men and
women.
- GDI assesses the differences in achievements between men and
women in these three dimensions and aims to highlight gender
inequalities in a society.
- GDI can provide a more gender-sensitive perspective on development
and can help identify areas where gender disparities exist.
In summary, HDI provides a general overview of human development in a
country, while GDI focuses on gender disparities within that development.
Both indices are valuable tools for assessing the well-being of a
population and can be used together to gain a more comprehensive
understanding of development and gender-related issues in a particular
region.
Thank you
