The Relationship Between Cuba And The United States
Change is hard in our own lives and in the lives of nations President Obama said Change is even
harder when we carry the heavy weight of history on our shoulders. But today we are making these
changes because it is the right thing to do (cnn.com). The poor relations with Cuba and the United
States have been like this since the cold war. Fidel Castro seized power in Cuba in 1959 by removing
from power Fulgencio Batista who was in charge at the time. Castro taxed the United States hard on
their imports. Which lead President Kennedy into a full economic embargo that included stringent
travel restrictions that are still in effect today.
U.S. President Barack Obama came into office seeking greater engagement with Cuba, and in 2009

Just like it is stated in white house article following the same path does not lead to a different result,
President Obama was looking for a different result. It does not serve America s interests, or the Cuban
people, to try to push Cuba toward collapse. We know from hard learned experience that it is better to
encourage and support reform than to impose policies that will render a country a failed state. We
should not allow U.S. sanctions to add to the burden of Cuban citizens we seek to help
(whitehouse.gov). If we do not grow as a people how are we going to improve for our future benefits?
We need to move forward and help each other and let past events go by the way side and look to a
future that will help not just one group but all groups. Before President Barack Obama historic trip to
Cuba he loosened travel and banking and tourism restrictions. While visiting Cuba, United States

Primary Purpose Of Sentencing Essay
Introduction
This essay will explore and evaluate the question The Primary Purpose of sentencing for criminal
offences should be to deter future offending with reference to primary and secondary sources.
Firstly this essay will look at what a sentence is for according to the law and analyse what the disputed
words mean and its consequences. Then the different theories of punishment will be explored and will
continue to look at how reoffending is prevented during an offenders sentence. Following this the
effectiveness of the prevention is analysed. Finally, prior to the final conclusion, this essay will take a
close look at what is in society s and the offender s best interest based on the research conducted so far
earlier in the essay. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
But what about custodial life sentences? Sentencing an offender to life in prison will mean that there
will be rehabilitation of the offender but there will be no chance for them to go back to life as a regular
citizen hence deterrence is primary, here. They are considered so dangerous to the public and prone to
reoffend that the only way to deter them from reoffending is a custodial sentence for the rest of their
life. When deterring by rehabilitation is not an option, deterring by imprisonment is used. Again
Making deterrence a very primary purpose of a sentence.
The theories of punishment
Desert theories: This theory is about punishment being the right response to crime as long as it is
suitable for the seriousness of the offence. That a person who has committed a crime should and
deserves to be punished. An eye for an eye so to say. The theory is about retribution but it faces
difficulties where it may be less straightforward to determine what is an appropriate punishment for
what crime.
Rehabilitivate theories: This theory focuses on the consideration that people commit crimes because
they are struggling in life. Rehabilitation is crucial in order to prevent them from reoffending and in
turn becoming a productive member of society. This theory believes that treatment needs to be
adjusted individually for each

A Seminar On Education And Poverty
In September of 2013, my sister passed away, leaving our family with more questions than answers
and challenges that parallel with heartbreak. As a freshman trying to find my way at the University of
Georgia, it seemed that I was going backwards compared to my peers and my grieving put more of a
strain on my will to continue my studies. Pursuing any actions for bettering myself or my counterparts
tended to feel overwhelming. Feelings of loneliness engulfed my state of mind, but what was most
unbearable was my realization that I had no idea of how I was going to overcome this. I usually have a
plan of what I would like to accomplish and who I strive to become, but at this stage of life, I felt as
lost as ever. As months passed, I had the opportunity to attend a seminar on education and poverty.
Although I was not interested in education, I attended to gain information for a class project. Through
this seminar, I found the beginning of passion that I did not know I possessed. The presenters exposed
the significant fact that students often times do not finish school due to their lacking in resources to
finish. These self and material doubts affect students at every level of education. While focusing on
my own challenges, I lost sight of the present, daunting challenges that others, whether they be my
peers or younger students, face on a daily basis. Pity for these other students had not crossed my mind,
but rather, an urgency to take action. Students must work so relentlessly

How The Western Culture Views The Elderly
Introduction: People treat and view the elderly members of society in alternate ways depending on the
culture they are from and have grown up in; this is shown in Western and Eastern society who regard
the elderly very differently. The way children are brought up to perceive the elderly can have a large
impact on the way they treat elderly people when the children grow into teenagers and adults, both in
everyday situations and in care homes. I shall be discussing how the Western culture views the elderly
and how this affects the care they receive by exploring the stereotypical view of how the UK treats
their elderly people which involve stories of abuse that takes place in care homes that have been
revealed by elderly victim s families. However I shall also focus on elderly people of a Western
culture that receive a very high quality of care by being given above and beyond the minimum
standard of care, attention and respect expected in an elderly care home which, for example, can be
seen in Hayling Island care home which has been labelled as the best in the UK. I will be talking about
another European country, France, who have dramatically improved their treatment and care of the
elderly following a heat wave in 2003 and the statistics that say France has the highest elderly suicide
rate in Europe.
On the other hand, I shall be discussing how the Eastern culture is so different from Western culture
regarding their attitude and respectfulness towards elderly people. Children

Bat Mitzvaah Research Paper
At thirteen, I became what most all Jewish girls become at that age: A Bat Mitzvah. The highway to
adulthood in the Jewish culture. It s no different than any other cultural event. Preparing for a Bat or
Bar Mitzvah is the worst thing ever, spending hours and hours everyday learning my Torah portion,
writing my speech, and learning more about the Jewish civilization.
I was indeed excited for my Bat Mitzvah, even though the process was a little difficult, because I hadn

Physical Advantages And Uses Of The Vacuum Grippers
3.1 Introduction
It is a subsystems of handling mechanisms which provide temporary contact with the object to be
grasped and ensure the position and orientation when carrying and mating the object to the handling
equipment [..]; the term gripper is also used in cases where no actual grasping, but rather holding of
the object where the retention force can act on a point, line or surface Monkman et al. Robot grippers

The Mental Consequences Of Drafting Soldiers
The military trains soldiers to be mentally and physically unbreakable, but the emotional baggage they
carried expose them to mental and physical risks. Soldiers that are draft run a higher risk of
developing mental disorders because the emotional and physical stress they experience contributes to
their mental instability. In The Things They Carried, Tim O Brien shows the mental consequences of
drafting soldiers, who struggle to reconcile their emotional state, and fail to maintain their sanity.
Drafted soldiers have no choice but to fight, so they come in mentally vulnerable. Once they are
involved in warfare, they become susceptible to Post Traumatic Stress Disorder. Soldiers are trained in
military bases, where they learn the craft of warfare before being sent to combat. They are prepared
physically and mentally, but nothing compares to the real situations in battle. In The Things They
Carried, Tim O Brien says It was my fourth day [...] I felt a moist sickness rise up in my throat. I sat
down beside the pigpen, closed my eyes, put my head between knees, (O Brien, 214). This quote
demonstrates how O Brien is unable to deal with death, even though he was prepared to confront it. O
Brien mental state starts to deteriorate and he seems to have an emotional breakdown. For example,
The young soldier stood off by himself at the center of the field [...] the boy s face was impossible to
make out. The filth seemed to erase identities, (O Brien, 156). In this moment,

Narcotics Anonymous Meeting Analysis
Through my observations of the Narcotics Anonymous meeting I believe that my analysis could be
beneficial to the realm of medicine. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (2014) released a
study that displayed, health care providers wrote 259 million prescriptions for painkillers in 2012,
enough for every American adult to have a bottle of pills. Considering the mass amount of
prescriptions being written nationwide, it is not surprising that one of the members in the NA meeting
I attended was able to easily obtain painkillers from her doctor. The specific interaction I encountered
during the Narcotics Anonymous meeting where the woman described that her addiction was being
supported by the constant prescriptions written by her doctor ... Show more content on

The word epidemic itself spreads fear throughout society, however fluctuations in drug use are
considered epidemics, which may not instill fear into the general public. Due to the fact that the CDC
considers opioid overdose as a national epidemic, it may be confused to what this epidemic entails.
This is not saying that the misuse and rising overdoses due to opioid painkillers is not a serious
problem, it just may render the severity of the problem. In addition, because the CDC does consider
the rise of overdoses due to painkillers an epidemic, the access to treatment needs to be more widely
available. Through one of the interactions I had during my time at the NA meeting, I was able to
understand that many people feel as though they do not or did not have access to help. Dan Mangan
(2016), writes, [a] survey released Tuesday by the Kaiser Family Foundation also found that a large
majority of Americans believe that lack of access to care for people suffering from substance abuse is
a problem in the United States. In this, those who work in medicine should take from my supporting
observations and numerous studies that access to recovery programs need to become more widely
available. If the United States is going to consider the use of opioid painkillers as an epidemic, action
needs to be taken to assist addicts and educate the nation on the effects of these

How Does Polonius Deserve To Die
In the play Hamlet by William Shakespeare, while Hamlet is the protagonist, the main antagonist is
arguably Polonius. He is portrayed as a cunning, bothersome character who is always submissive and
obedient to Claudius, the king of Denmark and also the uncle of Hamlet, as he is the councillor of the
king. Yet, at the same time, he is not completely malicious as he is a caring father for his son and
daughter, Laertes and Ophelia. In Act 3, scene 4, Polonius is murdered by Hamlet, who mistakens him
for Claudius. This death of Polonius is the most controversial death in the play in that some argue he
deserved to die for his wrongdoings to Hamlet, and some claim the opposite that he did not deserve to
die. Although from Hamlet s perspective Polonius ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
After hearing Ophelia s description of Hamlet s abnormal behavior after he gets rejected by her,
Polonius concludes that his neglected love hath made him mad (2.2.122). Therefore, in order to
confirm the origin of Hamlet s madness, Polonius constantly spies Hamlet. He looses [his] daughter to
purposely arrange an encounter between her and Hamlet and secretly listens to him hiding behind the
scene; then further on, he again spies him in Gertrude s bedroom and observes his conversation with
his mother (2.2.176). Thus, Polonius keeps tries to manipulate Hamlet s life and interferes with his
privacy in order to see his madness. This is a clear wrongdoing of Polonius, as his actions would be
considered immoral, and, therefore, Polonius spying on Hamlet shows more evidence why Hamlet
would justify Polonius death. However, although Polonius actions seem extreme and might have
caused Hamlet deteriorate more, they, in fact, were simply to help the people he sincerely cared for:

Explroing the Social Groups to Which Reformation Appealed in Sixteenth Century Germany
During the early Sixteenth Century the church was the most powerful constitution in the world. So,
how was its power reduced so dramatically in the space of one century and where did support for the
reformation lie?
The question of which social groups the reformation appealed to can be answered by addressing which
sectors of society supported Martin Luther, The Father of Protestantism. The aspects which need to be
considered are how Catholicism influenced the daily lives of towns and cities and what difference the
introduction of a new religion produced, how Martin Luther managed to openly speak out ... Show

So, Luther penned against the murderous, pillaging hordes of peasants and by May 1925 state leaders
had raised and army to defeat the rebels.
The peasant revolt played a very important part in the reformation and had massive consequences.
Luther, an educated man knew he could not be associated to rebels and would need friends in higher
places in order to escape excommunication. By turning his back to the peasants he showed to the
princes that Luther could be trusted with regards to issues such as social stability, he showed those in
power he was on the right side. His condemnation of the peasantry also appealed to the middle class
due to his representation of social stability, they too were fearful for their property. Although the
enormous peasantry turned away from Lutheranism and instead became part of the Anabaptist
Movement, this in turn helped the reformation succeed, as it gave Luther a chance to attract the small
majority of nobles and bourgeoisie.
It has now been established that Luther desperately wanted the reformation to appeal to nobility and
the majority of nobles did support the reformation however, the only side they were on, was their own.
King Charles definitely remained Catholic and dedicated to the papacy. This is evident throughout

the people of Pripyat and the soldiers faced in their lives after the nuclear tragedy. Choosing her to

Sigrid Undset and Pearl Buck won the Nobel Prize in Literature for their historical accounts (Jewell

history of witnesses of the nuclear accident at Chernobyl. All of these works were historical and
nonfiction in subject matter, as befits the trend among female Nobel Prize laureates. Additionally,
Voices from Chernobyl was written in a journal like fashion. Its many entries about the philosophies
and lives of the people who had lived through the Chernobyl reactor explosion are similar to the travel
writings by Selma Lagerlof (Jewell 108). Both works are written to describe the lives of their subjects
realistically. The previous works by female laureates in literature are similar to Svetlana Alexievich s
work because they tend not to be fictional. According to Richard Jewell, there is a propensity to not

current and historical awarding of the Nobel Prize. Yet it is who the subjects are and what they

National Assessment Of Adult Literacy
Illiteracy can be easily defined as not having the skill or the ability to read this sentence. Every year,
more children grow up without the ability to read. This results in students dropping out of high school.
Literacy is vital element to education and illiteracy can greatly affect an individual. The National
Assessment of Adult Literacy states that literacy is using printed and written information to function in
society, to achieve one s goals, and to develop one s knowledge and potential ( Literacy Surveys ).
Without the ability to read, an individual cannot achieve any of their goals or rise to meet their
potential. People are looking to the government for funding to resolve the literacy issue. Government
funding and the development of new programs can substantially decrease the amount of illiterate
American citizens. Yet, more needs to be done to improve literacy rates across the country.
There are many factors that could be causing the drop of literacy in the United States. Poverty is one
of the largest causes of illiteracy today (Nayak). Students and families living in poverty are more
likely to be illiterate than students and families living with strong financial standings. Families dealing
with tough financial situations are often more focused on providing food and shelter for their children
rather than sending them to school (Nayak). Therefore, these children are not being encouraged to
obtain an education. Little to no education for a young child can

Parties who are not satisfied with the decision of a lower court must petition the U.S. Supreme Court
to hear their case. The primary means to petition the court for review is to ask it to grant a writ of

Rule 23.1 governs derivative suits in which a plaintiff seeks to assert a right belonging to a
corporation (or similar entity) in which the plaintiff is a shareholder, on behalf of the corporation that
is not pursuing the claim itself. Rule 23.2 governs actions by or against unincorporated associations
(Rule 23, 2009).
Diversity of citizenship is one of the factors that will allow a federal district court to exercise its
authority to hear a lawsuit. This authority is called diversity jurisdiction. It means that a case involving
questions that must be answered according to state laws may be heard in federal court if the parties on
the two sides of the case are from different states. No matter how many parties are involved in a
lawsuit, there must be complete diversity in order for the federal court to exercise this type of
authority. If a single plaintiff is a citizen of the same state as any defendant, there is no diversity and
the case must be pursued in a state court (Diversity, n.d.).
Because the defendants were from the same state as the plaintiff, this would not fall under a diversity
of citizenship case. This case was about equal opportunity and gender discrimination not about
diversity in the sense of cultural diversity.

crimes with an 85.72 index in 2012 then going down to 70.50 by 2014 (Statistics Canada, 2016). The
biggest drop in those years was again in 2013 with a 9.76% drop though by 2015 it started to increase
to a 74.48 index making it a 5.65% change (Statistics Canada, 2016).

Although the Uniform Crime Reporting Survey (UCR) is based on police reported incidents it is also
useful too look at the General Social Survey (GSS) who personally contact people to see if they have
been victimized in the past and with this they could have come across and recorded incidents that were
not reported to the police (Statistics Canada, 2014). According to (GSS) physical assault is considered
to be the most frequent violent crime in Canada with around 6.4 million criminal incidents during
2014, 22% of that was physical assault (Statistics Canada, 2014). Physical Assault is shown to have
fallen by 35% in 2014 being the biggest drop since between 1999 and 2004 with having the highest
incidents during 1999 and 2009 at 80 incidents per 1,000 people which dropped to about 45

Bathroom Revolutionaries Summary
In this week reading, Calling All Restroom Revolutionaries , by Simone Chess, Alison Kafer, Jessi
Quizar, and Mattie Udora Richardson they expressed three main points throughout the article. The
first main point in this article is that bathrooms are easier to access for some of us than for others. This
is an issue that some people don t know about or don t even think is a problem. Recently this has been
a hotbed topic, within the media but I have been aware of this problem for sometime now. Many of
my close friends have expressed their concerns about the bathroom situation well before this became a
newsworthy topic. In addition, this topic has always bothered me because it is a bathroom and people
mostly use the bathroom for two purposes. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
I like the way the authors went about explaining the problem and the examples that were given
throughout the article. I also thought it was useful to show that multiple groups can come together for
a common cause even with their different visions. I never thought about the fact that individuals that
are wheelchair bound can not reach the tampon dispensers within the bathrooms. Also, I never noticed
that with the gender neutral bathrooms that there are not tampons/pad dispensers which is very
peculiar to me because they should be in there. Those are two aspects of this informative reading that I
did not even slightly think about before this article. I am unsure about what actions to take on this
article because I feel like there should be access to tampons and pads within the gender neutral
bathrooms but unsure on how to start that process. I know that it took awhile to even have gender
neutral bathroom on campus so I am unsure on how to start raising awareness of this issue. I will
begin to start using the gender neutral bathroom to reduce the stigma that is attached to this bathroom
to make it a more normalized

Jacqueline Förster Case Entitlement
Case Note Case C 158/07 Jacqueline Förster v Hoofddirectie van de Informatie Beheer Groep Förster
Judgment Facts of the case The Förster judgment concerns the legal dispute between the student
Jacqueline Förster and the Executive Board of the IB Groep. Förster was a German national who
moved to the Netherlands for her studies. During her studies she worked to support her living costs
and was able to receive a study grant from the IB Groep, an administrative body. The IB Groep
annulled the maintenance grant with respect to the period from July to December 2003 and requested
that Förster repay the excess sums. Ms. Förster brought an action before Alkmaar District Court. That
action was held to be unfounded on two grounds. First, Ms. Förster could no longer be regarded as a
worker since she had not had any real and genuine employment during that time period. Second, Ms.
Förster could not claim entitlement to a maintenance grant because she had not been integrated into
Dutch society. Ms. Förster appealed against that judgement before the Centrale Raad van Beroep. She
claimed that she was already sufficiently integrated into Dutch society to be able to claim a
maintenance grant. In the alternative, she submitted that she ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

Therefore, Article 18 TFEU is also applicable to maintenance costs for students. Furthermore, a five
year residence requirement is deemed appropriate for the purpose of guaranteeing that the applicant

that the first paragraph of Article 18 TFEU does not preclude the application to nationals of other
member States of a requirement of five years prior

Hexane And Toluene Lab Report
Jessie Nalley
24 October 2017
Sailajah Gukathasan
Fractional Distillation of Hexane and Toluene
Aim/Purpose: The purpose of this experiment is to separate and purify the liquid components of a
mixture with a known composition using a technique called fractional distillation. In order to do so, a
liquid mixture is separated into three fractions in the first distillation; then, one of the fractions
produced is redistilled to increase the purity of the liquid. Since two rounds of distillation occur, the
process is termed fractional distillation. Additionally, it is crucial for students to understand the
principles of gas chromatography so the purity and percent composition of each fraction can be
determined.
Theory: The basis for this ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Theoretical plates represent the stage in which two phases, such as the liquid and vapor phase of a
substance, establish equilibrium with one another. Thus, since the Hickman still has a short column
and a complete separation of hexane and toluene cannot be achieved in one cycle, there are two
theoretical plates in this experiment: one from the original distillation where three fractions are
recovered, and one from the redistillation of one of the fractions to produce more pure portions. This
experiment involves the separation of a solution containing hexane and toluene.
These compounds meet the criteria mentioned above since their boiling points are approximately 40°C
apart (hexane: 69°C; toluene: 111°C). During the first distillation, the liquid mixture is separated into
three fractions. These three fractions must be collected at the specific temperature ranges shown
below:
Desired Composition
Temperature Range
Mostly Hexane
60° 70°C
Equal Portions of Hexane and Toluene
75° 85°C
Mostly Toluene
85° 105°C
The phase diagram of hexane and toluene depicts the relationship between temperature and the mole
fraction of the mixture, revealing that as the mole fraction of hexane and toluene changes, the boiling
point of the mixture changes as well. It is important to note that at any given point, the mole fraction
of hexane and toluene must equal 1.0. The graph below displays the changes mentioned above in
regards to the phase diagram and the

Analysis Of The Book The Hobbit
The Hobbit, a novel by J.R.R Tolkien, was a prequel to The Lord of the Rings series. The Hobbit is
also an adventure story that follows the classic, hero s journey. The protagonist of the novel, Bilbo, is
much like the European explorers in the Age of Exploration during the 15th Century. For example,
Christopher Columbus was widely regarded as a hero during his time. Columbus was a Spanish
explorer that is known for discovering the Americas. In 1492, Columbus set sail west in hopes of
discovering a new route to the Indies, instead he found America. Like Bilbo, Columbus was an
ordinary person who went on an adventure, faced challenges, and in the end, became a hero.
Previously, a hero s journey was mentioned. The pattern that heroes go through in their journey was
discovered by writer Joseph Campbell. Campbell studied many adventure stories and noticed a pattern
that all of the heroes went through. He said that the journey they take happens in seven phases. These
stages take the hero out of the environment they are in, give them conflicts, make them face a big
challenge, sends them home, and finally the hero shares their gift to their society. This cycle is
demonstrated in many adventure stories and movies. In fact, many authors study Campbell s work
when they are writing stories. Bilbo goes through this hero s journey and this is shown when he goes
through stage one and two, four, and five. First, Bilbo goes through stage one and two of the hero s
journey. Stage one and

Pros And Cons Of Media Censorship
Media Censorship Will Not Stop the Violence
Violence will be with us forever. We cannot change that. However, we can, and must change the way
our children and we relate to it. Leonard Pitts Jr., columnist for the Miami Herald, explains it this way:
Despite the way it seems, carnage did not begin at Columbine. To the contrary, human beings have
always had a tremendous capacity to inflict pain on one another, a capacity that reaches far deeper
than whatever is on the marquee at the local multiplex. I do not dispute that we live in a violence
besotted culture that has helped anesthetize children all of us, really to the effects of physical
aggression. So yes, it is proper and necessary for us to debate the way violence is ... Show more

In an experiment conducted in 1960, Stanford University psychologist Albert Bandura and colleagues
showed nursery school children television clips of adults abusing a toy clown called a Bobo doll. Then
the psychologist watched how the children played in the room with the doll and other nonagressive
toys. Children who had seen the aggressive videos were much more likely to kick and beat the clown,
especially if they had seen the adult being rewarded for the behavior. The children continued to act
violently even when the abuser had been dressed as a cartoon like cat (Mestel). Teenagers are
constantly bombarded with a barrage of sex, profanity, and violence. When they turn on the radio they
hear about murder and rape. When they turn on the television they see the same horrible acts being
portrayed. Industry representatives say they have worked hard to implement voluntary rating systems
that inform parents of the products content, but they continue to deny any knowledge of specific
marketing of adult rated products to a youthful market. However, magazines with huge numbers of
under 17 subscribers such as Teen, DC Comics, Marvel Comics, and YM all carry ads for R rated
movies, as does MTV whose core audience is ages 12 to 24. In a forum in The Plain Dealer a fifteen
year old female wrote:

Personification Billy Collins Poetry Analysis
Symbolism and Personification in Poetry Poetry in some way, shape or form, gives realistic ideas to
even objects that reflect upon a part of life by using symbolism and personification. When looking at,
Divorce , the cutlery is personified and uniquely used throughout the whole short poem. In chapter
four, Johnson and Arp tells us Personification consists of giving the attributes of a human being to an
animal, an object, or a concept (797). Primarily the whole idea around personification, is for the reader
to visualize and understand what the human attributes that are given to the object or concept. Billy
Collins writes the lines, Once, two spoons in bed,/now tinted forks/across a granite table/and the

We hardly knew what to make of all this. Our Mongols explained that tomorrow night there will be a

who had a large number of sick people waiting to be cured. As we walked in the Lama was attending a
lady patient who had a large tubercular absess on her neck. With a few strokes of his hand the Lama
removed the absess from the woman s neck to her finger and cutting it opened with a huge knife he

Seasonal Affective Disorder
Alaskans experiences on average about five hours of sunlight during the winter months, sometimes
living in Alaska during the winter can take its toll on a person. The year 1984 was when Seasonal
Affective Disorder first became known in a research paper at the National Institute of Mental Health
in Bethesda, Maryland. Seasonal Affective Disorder mainly affects people in the winter season, but
can also affect people during the summer seasons. Seasonal Affective Disorder is best understood as a
form of depression that affects people in the winter and, less commonly, in the summer. This paper
will help provide a better understanding of S.A.D. and how it affects people living in Arctic climates.

McMahon , et al, 2014). Another factor that can play into S.A.D. is melatonin, which helps with sleep
and wake cycles. Rosenthal, et al, notes how the pineal gland, the gland that produces melatonin, will
react to dark surroundings with drowsiness that can lead people to being lethargic (as cited in Melrose,
2015). When melatonin increases and serotonin decreases, the offset of the proteins can cause
circadian rhythms to be disrupted, which is the bodies 24 hour clock. Researcher Melrose writes that
...circadian rhythms respond to the rhythmic light dark changes that occur daily and throughout each
of the seasons. (2015). People with S.A.D. disorder normally find that their circadian rhythms are off

Treatments that follow with the diagnose of Seasonal Affective Disorder are antidepressant
medications, light therapy, vitamin D and counseling. Cheung, et al, (as cited in Melrose, 2015)
reports their findings with the antidepressant, fluoxetine and discovered that the medicine was just as
effective as light therapy. Light therapy is typically used in the mornings to help with circadian
rhythms to help set the persons clock . Light therapy usually consists of people sitting in front of

Factors Influencing the Prevelence of Addiction Essay
Addiction Everyday we see and hear news articles and reviews that say: I cannot put down Twilight...
it s addicting! or I m a Breaking Bad addict! The way the term addiction is used in the media these
days, many would overlook its actual significance and the trouble it causes for millions across the
globe. Recently, many individuals have referred to addiction as anything that is a compulsive need or
habit forming, which could involve everything from substances, like nicotine or alcohol, to activities
such as reading a compelling book or getting hooked on a popular television series. Unfortunately, the
word has become overused, over diagnosed, and even used as an excuse for one s wrong behavior.
Needless to say, addiction is, and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The article s authors counter the Choice Model, explaining that a person cannot choose whether to be
addicted or not. They outline the path leading to addiction by emphasizing the cause as a physical
malfunction in the reward circuitry of the brain. They claim that an addict s abnormalities in his or her
reward system causes the addict to achieve the state of euphoria or high by ingesting substances or
addictive behaviors. In addition, one s compulsive behaviors and substance abuse can hurt the reward
system and result in impaired impulse control and addiction (Matesa and Bickman), so it is a
deleterious cycle. Lastly, the article espouses that the Choice Model is in some way blaming the
individual and is a setup for relapse (Matesa and Bickman). Viewing addiction as a disease, the ASAM
says, will make it easier for addicts to receive help and conquer addiction. Proponents of the Choice
Model disagree, explaining that viewing addiction as a disease is more of a self fulfilling prophecy
than a way to draw help. Alternatively, the Choice Model counters the belief that addiction is a
disease, but rather believes it is all a choice when using substances or taking part in compulsive
behaviors. Educator, ex addict, and researcher Steven Slate first compares the Disease Theory to real
diseases in his blog, Addiction Is Not A Brain Disease, It Is A Choice. Slate comments that: In a true
disease, some part of the body is

Justice Is Not A True Form Of Justice
With the world being covered with injustice and cruelty, we must decide what being just actually
means. The question of what is justice is a question that has spanned the ages. However, we have
begun to form an outline to what we believe may or what may not be a correct form of justice .
Aquinas attempts to rhetorically show us what the truest form of justice is. Aquinas takes into account
many different factors asking what justice is and whether justice is always toward another, to name a
few examples. I will attempt to use the writings put forth by Aquinas to prove whether the judicial
system within Ferguson, Missouri is being completely just or if the justice being dealt for the police
officer is not a true form of justice.
On Monday, November 17, 2014 there was an article within the New York Times written by John
Eligon, Julie Bosman, and Monica Davey titled In Ferguson, Tactics Are Set for Grand Jury Decision
in the Brown Case. This controversial case is in move because of a debatably overpowering shooting
of an eighteen year old boy. However, this shooting was done by an officer of the law. We must decide
what is just within this very extreme case that is being tried. On one hand we see that an unarmed
eighteen year old boy was shot and killed in the middle of the street on that dreadful August 9th.
However, on the other hand we see that the shooter was an officer of the law and someone that we
have put our trust into to create a better sense of

The Relationship Between Cuba And The United States Change is hard in our own lives and in the lives of nations President Obama said Change is even harder when we carry the heavy weight of history on our shoulders. But today we are making these changes because it is the right thing to do (cnn.com). The poor relations with Cuba and the United States have been like this since the cold war. Fidel Castro seized power in Cuba in 1959 by removing from power Fulgencio Batista who was in charge at the time. Castro taxed the United States hard on their imports. Which lead President Kennedy into a full economic embargo that included stringent travel restrictions that are still in effect today. U.S. President Barack Obama came into office seeking greater engagement with Cuba, and in 2009 reversed ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Just like it is stated in white house article following the same path does not lead to a different result, President Obama was looking for a different result. It does not serve America s interests, or the Cuban people, to try to push Cuba toward collapse. We know from hard learned experience that it is better to encourage and support reform than to impose policies that will render a country a failed state. We should not allow U.S. sanctions to add to the burden of Cuban citizens we seek to help (whitehouse.gov). If we do not grow as a people how are we going to improve for our future benefits? We need to move forward and help each other and let past events go by the way side and look to a future that will help not just one group but all groups. Before President Barack Obama historic trip to Cuba he loosened travel and banking and tourism restrictions. While visiting Cuba, United States President Barack Obama and President of Cuba Raul Castro went to an exhibition baseball game played between the Tampa Bay Devil Rays and the Cuban National team, Tampa Bay won the game 4 1. Some called this baseball Diplomacy helping to quick change in America s relationship with Cuba through sport (New York ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Then the different theories of punishment will be explored and will continue to look at how reoffending is prevented during an offenders sentence. Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... But what about custodial life sentences? Sentencing an offender to life in prison will mean that there will be rehabilitation of the offender but there will be no chance for them to go back to life as a regular citizen hence deterrence is primary, here. They are considered so dangerous to the public and prone to reoffend that the only way to deter them from reoffending is a custodial sentence for the rest of their life. When deterring by rehabilitation is not an option, deterring by imprisonment is used. Again Making deterrence a very primary purpose of a sentence. The theories of punishment Desert theories: This theory is about punishment being the right response to crime as long as it is suitable for the seriousness of the offence. That a person who has committed a crime should and deserves to be punished. An eye for an eye so to say. The theory is about retribution but it faces difficulties where it may be less straightforward to determine what is an appropriate punishment for what crime. • 5. A Seminar On Education And Poverty In September of 2013, my sister passed away, leaving our family with more questions than answers and challenges that parallel with heartbreak. As a freshman trying to find my way at the University of Georgia, it seemed that I was going backwards compared to my peers and my grieving put more of a strain on my will to continue my studies. Pursuing any actions for bettering myself or my counterparts tended to feel overwhelming. Feelings of loneliness engulfed my state of mind, but what was most unbearable was my realization that I had no idea of how I was going to overcome this. I usually have a plan of what I would like to accomplish and who I strive to become, but at this stage of life, I felt as lost as ever. As months passed, I had the opportunity to attend a seminar on education and poverty. Although I was not interested in education, I attended to gain information for a class project. Through this seminar, I found the beginning of passion that I did not know I possessed. The presenters exposed the significant fact that students often times do not finish school due to their lacking in resources to finish. These self and material doubts affect students at every level of education. While focusing on my own challenges, I lost sight of the present, daunting challenges that others, whether they be my peers or younger students, face on a daily basis. Pity for these other students had not crossed my mind, but rather, an urgency to take action. Students must work so relentlessly ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 6. How The Western Culture Views The Elderly Introduction: People treat and view the elderly members of society in alternate ways depending on the culture they are from and have grown up in; this is shown in Western and Eastern society who regard the elderly very differently. The way children are brought up to perceive the elderly can have a large impact on the way they treat elderly people when the children grow into teenagers and adults, both in everyday situations and in care homes. I shall be discussing how the Western culture views the elderly and how this affects the care they receive by exploring the stereotypical view of how the UK treats their elderly people which involve stories of abuse that takes place in care homes that have been revealed by elderly victim s families. However I shall also focus on elderly people of a Western culture that receive a very high quality of care by being given above and beyond the minimum standard of care, attention and respect expected in an elderly care home which, for example, can be seen in Hayling Island care home which has been labelled as the best in the UK. I will be talking about another European country, France, who have dramatically improved their treatment and care of the elderly following a heat wave in 2003 and the statistics that say France has the highest elderly suicide rate in Europe. On the other hand, I shall be discussing how the Eastern culture is so different from Western culture regarding their attitude and respectfulness towards elderly people. Children ... • 9. The Mental Consequences Of Drafting Soldiers The military trains soldiers to be mentally and physically unbreakable, but the emotional baggage they carried expose them to mental and physical risks. Soldiers that are draft run a higher risk of developing mental disorders because the emotional and physical stress they experience contributes to their mental instability. In The Things They Carried, Tim O Brien shows the mental consequences of drafting soldiers, who struggle to reconcile their emotional state, and fail to maintain their sanity. Drafted soldiers have no choice but to fight, so they come in mentally vulnerable. Once they are involved in warfare, they become susceptible to Post Traumatic Stress Disorder. Soldiers are trained in military bases, where they learn the craft of warfare before being sent to combat. They are prepared physically and mentally, but nothing compares to the real situations in battle. In The Things They Carried, Tim O Brien says It was my fourth day [...] I felt a moist sickness rise up in my throat. I sat down beside the pigpen, closed my eyes, put my head between knees, (O Brien, 214). This quote demonstrates how O Brien is unable to deal with death, even though he was prepared to confront it. O Brien mental state starts to deteriorate and he seems to have an emotional breakdown. Due to the fact that the CDC considers opioid overdose as a national epidemic, it may be confused to what this epidemic entails. This is not saying that the misuse and rising overdoses due to opioid painkillers is not a serious problem, it just may render the severity of the problem. In addition, because the CDC does consider the rise of overdoses due to painkillers an epidemic, the access to treatment needs to be more widely available. He is portrayed as a cunning, bothersome character who is always submissive and obedient to Claudius, the king of Denmark and also the uncle of Hamlet, as he is the councillor of the king. Yet, at the same time, he is not completely malicious as he is a caring father for his son and daughter, Laertes and Ophelia. In Act 3, scene 4, Polonius is murdered by Hamlet, who mistakens him for Claudius. This death of Polonius is the most controversial death in the play in that some argue he deserved to die for his wrongdoings to Hamlet, and some claim the opposite that he did not deserve to die. Thus, Polonius keeps tries to manipulate Hamlet s life and interferes with his privacy in order to see his madness. Explroing the Social Groups to Which Reformation Appealed in Sixteenth Century Germany During the early Sixteenth Century the church was the most powerful constitution in the world. The question of which social groups the reformation appealed to can be answered by addressing which sectors of society supported Martin Luther, The Father of Protestantism. By turning his back to the peasants he showed to the princes that Luther could be trusted with regards to issues such as social stability, he showed those in power he was on the right side. His condemnation of the peasantry also appealed to the middle class due to his representation of social stability, they too were fearful for their property. Although the enormous peasantry turned away from Lutheranism and instead became part of the Anabaptist Movement, this in turn helped the reformation succeed, as it gave Luther a chance to attract the small majority of nobles and bourgeoisie. The National Assessment of Adult Literacy states that literacy is using printed and written information to function in society, to achieve one s goals, and to develop one s knowledge and potential ( Literacy Surveys ). Without the ability to read, an individual cannot achieve any of their goals or rise to meet their potential. People are looking to the government for funding to resolve the literacy issue. In order to do so, a liquid mixture is separated into three fractions in the first distillation; then, one of the fractions produced is redistilled to increase the purity of the liquid. Since two rounds of distillation occur, the process is termed fractional distillation. Thus, since the Hickman still has a short column and a complete separation of hexane and toluene cannot be achieved in one cycle, there are two theoretical plates in this experiment: one from the original distillation where three fractions are recovered, and one from the redistillation of one of the fractions to produce more pure portions. This experiment involves the separation of a solution containing hexane and toluene. These compounds meet the criteria mentioned above since their boiling points are approximately 40°C apart (hexane: 69°C; toluene: 111°C). The Hobbit is also an adventure story that follows the classic, hero s journey. The protagonist of the novel, Bilbo, is much like the European explorers in the Age of Exploration during the 15th Century. For example, Christopher Columbus was widely regarded as a hero during his time. Columbus was a Spanish explorer that is known for discovering the Americas. In 1492, Columbus set sail west in hopes of discovering a new route to the Indies, instead he found America. Like Bilbo, Columbus was an ordinary person who went on an adventure, faced challenges, and in the end, became a hero. Previously, a hero s journey was mentioned. The pattern that heroes go through in their journey was discovered by writer Joseph Campbell. Campbell studied many adventure stories and noticed a pattern that all of the heroes went through. He said that the journey they take happens in seven phases. These stages take the hero out of the environment they are in, give them conflicts, make them face a big challenge, sends them home, and finally the hero shares their gift to their society. • 32. Pros And Cons Of Media Censorship Media Censorship Will Not Stop the Violence Violence will be with us forever. We cannot change that. However, we can, and must change the way our children and we relate to it. Leonard Pitts Jr., columnist for the Miami Herald, explains it this way: Despite the way it seems, carnage did not begin at Columbine. To the contrary, human beings have always had a tremendous capacity to inflict pain on one another, a capacity that reaches far deeper than whatever is on the marquee at the local multiplex. I do not dispute that we live in a violence besotted culture that has helped anesthetize children all of us, really to the effects of physical aggression. In an experiment conducted in 1960, Stanford University psychologist Albert Bandura and colleagues showed nursery school children television clips of adults abusing a toy clown called a Bobo doll. Then the psychologist watched how the children played in the room with the doll and other nonagressive toys. Children who had seen the aggressive videos were much more likely to kick and beat the clown, especially if they had seen the adult being rewarded for the behavior. The children continued to act violently even when the abuser had been dressed as a cartoon like cat (Mestel). Teenagers are constantly bombarded with a barrage of sex, profanity, and violence. When they turn on the radio they hear about murder and rape. When they turn on the television they see the same horrible acts being portrayed. Industry representatives say they have worked hard to implement voluntary rating systems that inform parents of the products content, but they continue to deny any knowledge of specific marketing of adult rated products to a youthful market. However, magazines with huge numbers of under 17 subscribers such as Teen, DC Comics, Marvel Comics, and YM all carry ads for R rated movies, as does MTV whose core audience is ages 12 to 24. Personification Billy Collins Poetry Analysis Symbolism and Personification in Poetry Poetry in some way, shape or form, gives realistic ideas to even objects that reflect upon a part of life by using symbolism and personification. When looking at, Divorce , the cutlery is personified and uniquely used throughout the whole short poem. In chapter four, Johnson and Arp tells us Personification consists of giving the attributes of a human being to an animal, an object, or a concept (797). Primarily the whole idea around personification, is for the reader to visualize and understand what the human attributes that are given to the object or concept. Our Mongols explained that tomorrow night there will be a religious ceremony of great importance which will be very worthwhile to see. In the mean time we visited a small temple and made acquaintance of several Lamas. One of them was a great doctor Lama who had a large number of sick people waiting to be cured. As we walked in the Lama was attending a lady patient who had a large tubercular absess on her neck. With a few strokes of his hand the Lama removed the absess from the woman s neck to her finger and cutting it opened with a huge knife he dressed the wound. The year 1984 was when Seasonal Affective Disorder first became known in a research paper at the National Institute of Mental Health in Bethesda, Maryland. Seasonal Affective Disorder mainly affects people in the winter season, but can also affect people during the summer seasons. Seasonal Affective Disorder is best understood as a form of depression that affects people in the winter and, less commonly, in the summer. This paper will help provide a better understanding of S.A.D. and how it affects people living in Arctic climates. Seasonal affective disorder is a form of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... McMahon , et al, 2014). Another factor that can play into S.A.D. is melatonin, which helps with sleep and wake cycles. Rosenthal, et al, notes how the pineal gland, the gland that produces melatonin, will react to dark surroundings with drowsiness that can lead people to being lethargic (as cited in Melrose, 2015). When melatonin increases and serotonin decreases, the offset of the proteins can cause circadian rhythms to be disrupted, which is the bodies 24 hour clock. Researcher Melrose writes that ...circadian rhythms respond to the rhythmic light dark changes that occur daily and throughout each of the seasons. (2015). People with S.A.D. disorder normally find that their circadian rhythms are off beat and timed differently with day lengths, for example feeling tired in the middle of the day while being wide awake or feeling wide awake when it would normally be time to sleep. Treatments that follow with the diagnose of Seasonal Affective Disorder are antidepressant medications, light therapy, vitamin D and counseling. Cheung, et al, (as cited in Melrose, 2015) reports their findings with the antidepressant, fluoxetine and discovered that the medicine was just as effective as light therapy. Light therapy is typically used in the mornings to help with circadian rhythms to help set the persons clock . Light therapy usually consists of people sitting in front of ... • 37. Factors Influencing the Prevelence of Addiction Essay Addiction Everyday we see and hear news articles and reviews that say: I cannot put down Twilight... it s addicting! or I m a Breaking Bad addict! The way the term addiction is used in the media these days, many would overlook its actual significance and the trouble it causes for millions across the globe. Recently, many individuals have referred to addiction as anything that is a compulsive need or habit forming, which could involve everything from substances, like nicotine or alcohol, to activities such as reading a compelling book or getting hooked on a popular television series. Unfortunately, the word has become overused, over diagnosed, and even used as an excuse for one s wrong behavior. Needless to say, addiction is, and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The article s authors counter the Choice Model, explaining that a person cannot choose whether to be addicted or not. They outline the path leading to addiction by emphasizing the cause as a physical malfunction in the reward circuitry of the brain. They claim that an addict s abnormalities in his or her reward system causes the addict to achieve the state of euphoria or high by ingesting substances or addictive behaviors. In addition, one s compulsive behaviors and substance abuse can hurt the reward system and result in impaired impulse control and addiction (Matesa and Bickman), so it is a deleterious cycle. Lastly, the article espouses that the Choice Model is in some way blaming the individual and is a setup for relapse (Matesa and Bickman). Viewing addiction as a disease, the ASAM says, will make it easier for addicts to receive help and conquer addiction. Proponents of the Choice Model disagree, explaining that viewing addiction as a disease is more of a self fulfilling prophecy than a way to draw help. Alternatively, the Choice Model counters the belief that addiction is a disease, but rather believes it is all a choice when using substances or taking part in compulsive behaviors. Educator, ex addict, and researcher Steven Slate first compares the Disease Theory to real diseases in his blog, Addiction Is Not A Brain Disease, It Is A Choice. Slate comments that: In a true disease, some part of the body is ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 38. Justice Is Not A True Form Of Justice With the world being covered with injustice and cruelty, we must decide what being just actually means. The question of what is justice is a question that has spanned the ages. However, we have begun to form an outline to what we believe may or what may not be a correct form of justice . Aquinas attempts to rhetorically show us what the truest form of justice is. Aquinas takes into account many different factors asking what justice is and whether justice is always toward another, to name a few examples. I will attempt to use the writings put forth by Aquinas to prove whether the judicial system within Ferguson, Missouri is being completely just or if the justice being dealt for the police officer is not a true form of justice. On Monday, November 17, 2014 there was an article within the New York Times written by John Eligon, Julie Bosman, and Monica Davey titled In Ferguson, Tactics Are Set for Grand Jury Decision in the Brown Case. This controversial case is in move because of a debatably overpowering shooting of an eighteen year old boy. However, this shooting was done by an officer of the law. We must decide what is just within this very extreme case that is being tried. On one hand we see that an unarmed eighteen year old boy was shot and killed in the middle of the street on that dreadful August 9th. However, on the other hand we see that the shooter was an officer of the law and someone that we have put our trust into to create a better sense of ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
