The Black Cat Research Paper
The Black cat is one of the most famous short story of Edgar Allan Poe. In this work he s explaining the change of the
human during the life, determined by living in this world and the bait there. In my opinion the themes, he devotes this story
are familiar and close to him, so he can greatly express them. In the beginning of the story the man and his wife love
animals and have the favourite black cat Pluto. In the meantime, the man becomes to be addicted on alcohol. Once, after he
came back home, he is really mad, and poke one cat s eye. The man also treats his wife badly and starts hate his cat. One
time when he comes drunk again he gets mad and hang his cat. After he wakes up next morning, his house is burned, and

Essay about Rap and Moral Character
Rap and Moral Character In the article Rap and Moral Character by Wesley Cragg and Christine Koggel, the subject of
concern is the consequences of listening to rap music and the effects on moral behaviour. The author suggests that rap and
moral character are linked and that due to the natural context of rap, it promotes violence, crass materialism, crime, and is
misogynistic and therefore corrupts a person s moral character. Based on their claims, the authors take the position that rap
should be censured morally. In this paper, I will examine the authors claims, their reasoning, and their use of concepts. By
doing so, I will be able to demonstrate that their thesis (rap corrupts moral character and deserves moral censure) is unjust

This claim may seem to be fine if it stood by itself. However, in this context, the author is saying that everyone who listens
to rap is bad, corrupt, and engages in criminal activities. In other words, the authors are saying that they are bad. This
claim is loaded and assumes that everyone who listens to this type of music is bad because through the whole article, they
talk about how rap disrupts moral character and how it leads to bad things. This can also be classified as a hasty
generalization. This is a hasty generalization because the authors generalize beyond the limits of the population (implying
that everyone who listens to rap is a certain type of person).
The authors make another fallacious claim right after the hasty generalization claim. The claim Seeking out such material
is like seeking out and choosing to watch portrayals of atrocities, such as rapes, executions, and real life violence, all of
which are available in our culture and on the Internet is a prime example of Red Herring. Red Herring is used to divert
attention away from an argument/claim to something more acceptable and easy to explain. The topic at hand in this article
is how rap corrupts moral character and requires moral censure. The authors attempt to raise other examples of bad things

THE FORGOTTEN HISTORY OF THE WESTERN CINEMA
THE FORGOTTEN HISTORY OF THE WESTERN CINEMA
The western movies are film genre where the scene generally takes place in North America during the American conquest
of the West in the last decades of the nineteenth century. This genre appears since the invention of the cinema in 1985
finding its inspiration from literature and painting arts of the American Wild West. This genre reached its first success in
the mid twentieth century during the golden age of Hollywood studios, before it had being reinvented by European
filmmakers in the 1960s.
The term Western has since been attributed to other visual arts such as literature, painting, television, cartoon, and now
refers to all artistic production influenced by the atmosphere and the clichés ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In the 1880s, the Wild West was the theme of many shows such as the famous Wild West Show by Buffalo Bill. By 1900,
the theme is already so popular that it naturally became a source of inspiration for the pioneers of the film industry. In
1903, hollywood released the first Western movie The Great Train Robbery . It is a twenty minutes silent movie written,
produced, and directed by Edwin S. Porter. This production was directly inspired by the true story of the Wild Bunch gang
also know as the Doolin Dalton gang during the 1890s (Clapham). The Western became officially a film genre in the
1920s.
Very quickly, the western got detached little bit from reality to gain more freedom and imagination. Hollywood now
created a mythical representation of the cowboy. This simple cowherd has become a heroic and virtuous character with
impeccable and irreprochable qualities (Clapham, p.13). The western has also built a legend around iconic figures such as
Billy the Kid and Jesse James. It was inspired by events such as the Gunfight of OK Corral, which was staged in many
films. At the end of the movie The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance , produced by John Ford in 1962, a phrase captures the
essence of western: When the legend sells better than the

The Dubbed The Gilded Age
The 1870 s 90 s in the United States was a period of rapid industrial, population, and city growth. Dubbed the Gilded Age
by Mark Twain, this era of growth also brought on new, unprecedented problems. Unhealthy living and working conditions
and corruption were rampant and immigrants settled in cities that were unequipped to deal with them. Under bossism, the
dominant political system of the day, one political giant controlled much of the cities they were the boss of. These bosses
only solved problems when they could see how it would keep them in power and relied on the vulnerable poor and
immigrants to make up much of their base. They learned to appease them, but never to actually solve their problems. New
inventions revolutionized day to day life. The transcontinental railroad, the telephone, the lightbulb, and electricity were all
invented during this time. Factories sprung up everywhere, especially in cities. Cities grew by up to 80% as people, mainly
immigrants, flocked to fill the job openings in the factories. But the apartments and houses in the cities were not equipped
to hold as many people as they were forced to. Many of these new immigrant workers were limited to the only apartments
they could afford, which were run down, often with multiple families living together in unsanitary conditions. And the
workplace was no better. Men, women and children employed by the factories were often abused, forced to work
inhumanely long shifts, and underpaid. There was

My Favorite Beauty
Growing up, I never really had a favorite anything. I didn t have a favorite cartoon character that I was obsessed with, as
most children around the age of eight are. I didn t have a favorite outfit or shoes that I wanted to wear to just about any
occasion. Although I did have a favorite food, mac and cheese, when it came to things like that it was just whatever I liked,
I wanted. One day my mom and I were going shopping with my aunt. It was sunny outside so I wore some faded jean
shorts, a striped pink and black tank top, and my black and pink Heely s. My mom had on a pair of jeans, a black T shirt,
and some black Michael Kors flip flops. It was a 25 minute drive from my house to Sawgrass Mills Mall so I fell asleep on
the ride there. My aunt met us at the front of the mall. As we walked in, you could feel the temperature change. There were
people walking everywhere. I could even see some people sitting and getting massages because they ve probably been
walking around all day. You could hear some people on the phone, some just having friendly conversations with people
they probably didn t even know, and even a baby crying. We had been in the mall for about an hour and wasn t even
halfway through the building. Went in a few clothing and shoe stores and left with at least three bags. The last shoe store
we went into was Footlocker which is where I got a pair of pink Nikes. When walking out of the store, we could hear the
voices of children coming from next door so we went

Plastic Pollution Essay
The Global Impact of Plastic Pollution Entering Marine Ecosystems Approximately, 280 million tons of plastic is produced
year round around the globe (Sigler, 2014) which accounts for 8% of the worldwide manufacturing for oil (Vegter, et al.,
2014). Plastics are a major component in most consumer products; the reason being is that plastic is inexpensive,
lightweight, durable, and an excellent insulator. For this reason, plastic can be found in most items from: storage
containers, packaging material, communication devices, and transportation. Unfortunately, 3.5 million pieces of plastic are
estimated to enter the ocean shores daily; one third to a half of the garbage found in the ocean originate from the beverage
industry (Cohen, 2015). This litter is a symptom of our throw away society and our approach on how we manage our
natural resources (UN, 2011). Nearly one third of plastics that is generated are for single use items such as: floss, straws,
stirrer, coffee lids, and disposable cutlery (Sigler, 2014). The presence of plastic debris will not only effect oceanic habitat
and ecosystems but have an economic effect on anthropogenic activities such as tourism on beaches and fishing industry.
Although many countries are eager to prevent and manage waste surrounding their coastal waters; none are willing to take
responsibility over the large accumulation of waste in ocean gyres, known as garbage patches, and for good reason. These
garbage patches are located in

Boy Scouts College Essay
All across America, young men join together in a special organization called the Boy Scouts of America. Scouts from 1st
grade to seniors in high school work toward a common goal: growing up into a functional, mature citizen and leader of the
United States. I joined this great organization in 2006 as a Wolf Cub Scout and rose through the ranks to get into Boy
Scouts in 2010. I didn t know what to expect from such a widely popular, military like group. Will I get pushed to my
limit? How much can Scouts impact me? Is Cub Scouts like what others say?

greatest achievement and acts as a pick me up whenever I feel poor. The rank got me closer to my family and friends
through learning how to treat them with respect and kindness. I have better preparation and planning, even if the plans
pertain to far ahead in the future. My faith in God and His guidance improved because of my hope and belief in His
assistance in helping me. I feel more giving and charitable from learning that I do not need what I want, and someone else
more deserving should receive them. Additionally, it looks fantastic on résumés and applications and can give me that

The Importance Of Art Therapy
Art therapy involves using art to facilitate discussion with an art psychotherapist or therapist, using art materials that can
help express thoughts and feelings. It also can provide another way of communicating when it is hard to talk. There is no
need to be good at art; the aim is not to improve your skills. In art therapy, you will have time to talk and think about your
difficulties with the art psychotherapist or therapist, and it may help you to understand yourself better, gain insight and for
change to occur. Art therapy is the use of the visual arts and the creative process within a therapeutic relationship to
support and maintain the psychological and physical health of individuals of all ages. It is based on research that art
making is a health enhancing practice that positively impacts the quality of life. Art therapists are credited professionals
who use specific art based approaches with children, adults, groups and families. To support and maintain a quality of life.
The foundation of art therapy is most closely linked to psychoanalysis, that images come from the unconscious. Art
therapy is a clinical treatment which aims to help clients explore personal issues within a safe and supportive framework,
to resolve emotional, psychological and relationship difficulties. The use of art materials is a form of non verbal
communication enabling people to express and explore feelings which are very difficult and in some cases impossible to
convey through verbal language.

English Annotation Shushers Essay examples
The Narrative Confessions of a Shusher by Phillip Lopate creates a vivid image of the atmosphere of a movie theater that
contains an annoying or irritating person or couple. The purpose of this writing piece is to express the frustration of the
people surrounding those who do not partake in correct movie etiquette and also how society has possibly lost its sense of
respect for other persons. He is trying to convey the struggle between those who consider themselves to be shushers and
those who do not like to be solitude in public.
The author tries to convey this message mainly through writing this piece in first person while using the literary style of
stream of consciousness. Periodically throughout the piece, the author shows his ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

These factors are important to the purpose to set the tone of the atmosphere and to re create his experiences for the best
understanding of the piece.
This essay also conveys the message in the piece by using an anecdote, motif, and by using syntax. This piece is a brief
narrative in which the author is trying to convey the struggle between the shushers in society and those who do not want to
remain solitude, expressing how society has lost its respect for other persons. The piece is kept short and sweet to maintain
a clear focus throughout. In this anecdote, motif is often used through the repetition of shushing and the different types of
it to convey a message to the offender to stop disrupting the show. He describes himself as giving the offenders a good
hearty Shhh! multiple times throughout the piece to different offenders, each with a different situation. Mostly, the Shhh!
comes into play with the conversationalists , but there are other situations in which an extra sentence is used as their
rudeness becomes defiant policy just to prove some sort of point to him. This motif is used to show constant efforts to stop
offenders and striking a blow for moviegoers everywhere even though his efforts, based on the offender, are futile because
of their lack of respect for him and those around him. The author also uses the writing tactics

Identity In Shakespeare s Romeo And Juliet
To thine own self be true is a respected age old saying, but while it epitomises the value of self understanding and integrity,
society often forces false identities onto individuals. What ensues is a culture where we constantly act in a way that is not
genuine to who we are, to please family, friends and to follow society s pattern. Revered writer William Shakespeare
addresses this theme over multiple texts, namely Romeo and Juliet, in which two star cross d lovers challenge their
identities with true love, and ultimately forfeit their lives as a result. Shakespeare presents the notion that despite the pain
and suffering that may come with being true to oneself, it is necessary to achieve authenticity regardless of these
consequences. He proves ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Thus it is hard for Juliet to challenge her family to be true to herself and be with Romeo, as this challenge could lead to
death. In a similar encounter, Romeo decides that he must reconcile with Tybalt as being with Juliet is being true to
himself, and being with Juliet means becoming kin of Tybalt. He completely disregards his status as a Montague and his
hate for Capulets to prove his sincerity, by stating, And so, good Capulet which name I tender as dearly as my own be
satisfied. This is another scenario in which Shakespeare shows the pain that comes with challenging identity, by killing
Romeo s dear friend Mercutio in the fight that ensues. The highly revered modern film Dead Poet s Society (1989)
continues Shakespeare s theme through Neil s journey. Neil attends an elite private school and his parents wish for him to
be a doctor, but his true passion is acting. Upon deciding that [He s] gonna do it! Whether [his] father wants [him] to or
not! (ref) He commits to acting, yet his family don t accept him for his true self, only what they want him to be. As a result

win or lose because he was getting dizzy, so he probably wouldn t be able to last any longer, if Sandel gets back up. All
that hard work and strategy that King did will depend on this moment. The resolution of A Piece of Steak is when Tom
King loss the fight and cried. When he was crying, King realized why Stowsher Bill had cried that night twenty years ago
when King had beaten him in a match and he finally understands the reason behind it. Bill probably had rent to pay, family
to feed, and food to buy. Yet, King stole that away from him over glory and easy money. The steak that might had helped

readers that life is an endless cycle where the youth will beat and replace the elderly. The once prideful and easy moment
in life where you can laugh at others crying would soon be over and you will be the one crying while others laugh at you.
The ending was foreshadowed throughout the story when the narrator talked about how the youth will climb over the
bodies of the old uns, then they will become the old uns getting stepped on, and it will go on for eternity. In addition, the
words that the toff told King that night when King beat Bill

Analysis Of Dave Barry s Guys Vs. Men
Within his piece, Guys Vs. Men, Dave Barry articulates the different perspectives available on viewing males. Throughout
his piece he utilizes a satirical tone to showcase this idea. The audience that Dave Barry is attempting to convey his
message to is the general public. I believe this to be an appropriate assessment as the level of language employed by Dave
Barry, throughout his piece, lacks complexity. His use of satire also helps to identify the audience. This is because the use
of humour can be seen as a way to capture the attention of a reader quickly in hopes that the reader continues, and
ultimately finishes the article. Using these as evidence I can conclude the audience being targeted is the general public.
Dave Barry s thesis, which can be located in paragraph one, stating that there s another way to look at males: not as
aggressive macho dominators; not as sensitive, liberated, hugging drummers; but as guys. Within his thesis, Dave Barry
expresses how the stereotypes that define a male are not the only points of view of a male. He conveys that there are other
perspectives available on how males can be viewed, and one of them is simply to view males as guys. In his body
paragraphs, Dave Barry proceeds to explain the various characteristics that make up, and are exhibited by, guys. The
Characteristics he mainly emphasises are how Guys Like Neat Stuff , how Guys Like a Really Pointless Challenge , and
finally how Guys Do Not Have a Ridged and Well Defined

Sense Of Sesponsibility And Sense And Sensibility
The most relatable novel to Austen s Pride and Prejudice is her earlier novel Sense and Sensibility written in 1811. The
largest comparisons that can be made are the function of screens that shelter, the distinction of being sensible and having
sensibility, as well as the necessity of wealth to determine character.
According to Sally Palmer, Austen is using fire screens as a symbol for characters who are trying to shield potentially
heated emotional outburst or the intense heat of social discourse that would ruin evanescent happiness. The two characters
that symbolize this would be Mr. Darcy and Elinor Dashwood of Sense and Sensibility. Darcy wants to protect all he cares
about including Mr. Bingley, his innocent sister Georgiana, and later ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The author Inger Sigrun Brodey, a reputable JASNA s North American Scholar who is a frequent speaker at Jane Austen
Society meetings, writes in the article Making sense of sensibility. from Persuasions: The Jane Austen Journal that
Marianne Dashwood symbolizes sensibility and her sister Elinor represents common sense. Marianne shares many
similarities with Lydia Bennet, the youngest daughter in Pride and Prejudice. Both believe their world is naturally good
without corruption such as greed and lust to mar it. Both have foibles that strangers generally are naturally good. However,
in actuality there are very good actors that manipulate the vulnerable. Humans have a way of being imminently selfish and
Austen is depicting it with the characters such as the dastardly Mr. Wickham of Pride and Prejudice and thoughtless Mr.
Willoughby of Sense and Sensibility. Both men affect their counterparts in a negative way and take advantage of the
situation. This creates a bias of distrustful feelings, that sympathy may be able to heal, but society might think is self
absorption. Nonetheless, pity is created for the poor creatures. In fact, it is sensibility or empathy that is necessary to have
a deeper connection like love or hate, and it is fear of rejection that may be the culprit of a hesitancy to love. This relates to
the larger picture of the transition between the Enlightenment and Romanticism, sense contrasts sensibility because sense
has logic and sensibility is fueled by emotional reactions

Self Destruction In The Black Cat By Edgar Allen Poe
By analyzing The Black Cat by Edgar Allen Poe, we can see that the main character in the story makes exceptionally
perverse choices. The motive for his actions can be found in clues given throughout the story. We can investigate what
happened to the man, and see exactly what caused him to respond in such a violent manner. To further look into the
motives for the characters actions, we must inspect and evaluate whether it was self destruction that turned him mad, or an
effect of outside events.
The narrator acts in a way that shows us that he has self destructive tendencies. We can assume this after we see him kill
his cat, and in other parts of the story. He regrets killing his cat almost instantaneously. He says, I experienced a sentiment
half of horror, half of remorse, for the crime of which I had been guilty (Poe 5). He deeply regrets cutting the cats eye out.
He decided to kill the cat because he was so emotionally guilty. He tells us, One night, returning home, much intoxicated,
from one of my haunts about town. (Poe 5). He was drunk, and this means that alcohol played an essential part in his
perverse decisions. The fact that his house burned down the night of the murder is symbolic. The night of the day that he
killed Pluto, he says, The curtains of my bed were in flames. The whole house was blazing (Poe 6). His house is all of his
achievements and worldly wealth, and it was burned to the ground in flames. It is a direct result of his sin of murdering the
innocent cat. It could be seen as a symbol of his eternal destiny. It is a punishment for killing the cat.
While alcohol is a killer, outside influences could be the main reason for the characters perverse actions. The character
mentions his childhood briefly in the beginning of the story. I view the act as the climax of inner, suppressed anxieties that
are contained in how the narrator goes back to when he was a young boy. His friends made fun of him for being so nice
and docile. My tenderness of heart was even so conspicuous as to make me the jest of my companions (Poe 3). His friends
seem to have made fun of him because he was a good person. He spent most of his time with his animals. His time he
spent could have been because his

Parabola Y X2 Change
The shape of the basis parabola y=x2 changes for different forms of the parabolic function causing it to translate, reflect or
dilate. Dilation (widening or narrowing) of the parabola occurs when the basis parabola y=x2 is multiplied or divided (m)
therefore changing the equation to either y=mx2 or y=x^2/m. For instance, if the parabola is multiplied by two the
parabola becomes narrower whereas if the parabola is divided by two the parabola becomes wider. This is evident in the
graph in question 1b as when the basis parabola is multiplied by fourteen the parabola becomes narrower however when
the basis parabola is divided by fourteen it becomes wider. Reflection of the parabola occurs when the basis parabola y=x2
is changed to y= x2. For example, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Vertical (upwards or downwards) translation of the parabola occurs when the basis parabola y=x2, y value of each point is
increased or decreased therefore changing the equation to either to y=x2+h or y=x2 h. For instance, in order to translate the
parabola upwards by 5 units it shifts the general point (a, a2) to (a, a2+5) therefore making the equation, y= x2+5. The
vertex of this parabola is now (0,5) but it still has the same axis of symmetry. Likewise, when the basis parabola becomes
y=x2 5 the parabola is translated 5 units down with the vertex (0, 5). This can be seen through the graph in question 1a as
the parabolas are vertically translated upwards or downwards by using the addition or subtraction of fourteen. Conversely,
horizontal translation of the parabola occurs when the translation parabola equation y=x2±h is changed to y=(x±h)2.
Therefore, the horizontal translation for the parabola is changed by the value of the variable h, that is subtracted from x
before the squaring operation. For example, in order to translate the parabola to the left by 4 units it shifts the general point
(a, a2) to (a, (a+2)2) therefore making the equation, y= (x+2)2. The vertex of this parabola is now (0,4). Likewise, when
the basis parabola becomes y=(x 2)2 the parabola is translated 2 units to the right with the vertex (0, 4). This can be seen
through the graph in

for administering justice based on the customs of a clan or tribe. In some instances, that kin policing led to feuds that

that anyone entering a law enforcement career today must, in addition to enforcing the law, be an expert at public and

Literacy Rate Of Low Enrollment
In past years, Illiteracy was a big issue to some countries like Pakistan, Ghana Ethiopia, South Africa and other places in
Africa. Over the past years, the government of these countries focused on education. The levels of literacy in these
countries was too high and there were causes of negative impact toward education. For instance, literacy rate of girls in
Pakistan and family were the negative impact. Literacy rates for both gender was too high in Ghana, Ethiopia and South

Humorous Wedding Speech by the Father of the Groom Essay
Humorous Wedding Speech by the Father of the Groom
Good evening. I would like to begin by welcoming each and every one of you to this joyous and stressful occasion.
You know, while I was watching my son and future daughter in law suffer through the painful process of planning their
wedding, I asked myself, What would it be like if men were responsible for organizing weddings?
I m guessing that my son might rename the Rehearsal Dinner to the Rehearsal Dinner Kegger . The invitations would not
read Gracious dinning from 7 to 10 but rather, Raucous Drinking from 7 until the cops show up.
Bridesmaids would wear matching blue jean cut offs and halter tops with more skin showing than not.
Tuxes would have team logos ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Wedding vows would mention cooking and sex specifically, but omit that forsaking all others part.
The couple would leave the ceremony in a souped up 73 Charger or some other Mopar with racing tires and flame designs
on the side of the car. Better yet, a Harley!
Idiots who tried to dance with the bride (unless they were really old) would get punched in the head.
There would be Tailgate Receptions .
Outdoor weddings would be held during sporting events at half time or between innings.
Ceremonies would be short and honeymoons would be long.
Ceremonies and honeymoons would be inexpensive compared to the cost of the bachelor party. The cost of strippers and
liquor really do add up.
I m certain my son wouldn t ask, Well, what do you think, dear? The burgundy or the wine colored napkins? They d just
grab extras from the local pub, tavern or donut store.
Favors would be matchbooks and cigars. Better yet, free drink passes at the local bar (pub).
Instead of a sit down dinner or a buffet, there would be a hog roast or buckets of chicken, pizza and plenty of b b q.
No one would bother with that Veil Routine . But they would insist that the garter be as high up on her leg as it could go.
The bridal bouquet would be recycled from a previous funeral/wedding (what s the difference).
On a more serious note, I find great pleasure in formerly welcoming Maria into the family. I say formally , because

Immigrants In William Bradford s Of Plymouth Plantation
America is a prime example of liberty that laid the foundation for multiculturalism. Ever since the discovery of the new
world, America has always been a melting pot as immigrants from all parts of the world come to America. They come to
seek a better life while inadvertently cultivating the area around them. For an example, in the diary, Of Plymouth
Plantation, by William Bradford, a group of puritans who journey to the Americas struggle to survive during the cold and
harsh winter. Luckily, they meet an indian called Squanto, who readily teaches them survival skills and make peace with
hostile indians. Most immigrants don t immediately make a positive impact and are shunned upon for their poor
communication and lack of social norm. However, assimilation will always eventually happen and is tenacious to America
and will perpetuate as different cultures intertwine into what we know of today as an American . ... Show more content on

When Squanto and other indians were captured and sent back to England, it made the tribes at Plymouth hostile towards
white foreigners (Bradford 355). The captured indians slowly adopted English language and culture, and they eventually
go back to Plymouth (351). When the chief Samoset noticed that the pilgrims were there to cause no intended harm, he
sent Squanto to negotiate with them (362). Because Squanto was a fluent english speaker and understood where the
pilgrims are coming from, he brings back their stolen tools and invites them for a feast (366). Squanto brought back to the
English Community by paving the way to an impending colony that influenced other founding of colonies. This shows
assimilation because Squanto took in English ideals and helped the pilgrims

How The Titans Influence Greek Mythology
Samuel Johnson once said, Great works are not performed by strength but by perseverance. This was like the Greek Titans
ruled over Greece before the Greek Gods and were greater in size and power than the Greek Gods. Even though the Greek
Gods were still powerful and could match up against the Greek Titans they weren t the ones to pave the path. The Titans
played a huge role in Greek Mythology by bringing Zeus and the others into the world causing a war. The Titans were one
of the first to rule in ancient Greece and were one of the most influential. There were twelve original Titans, the brothers
Oceanus, Coeus, Crius, Hyperion, Iapetus, and Cronus and the sisters Thea, Rhea, Themis, Mnemosyne, Phoebe, and
Tethys ( Titan 1). These Titans ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
For example, Contrary to his brothers, Atlas sided with the Titans during their War with the Olympian Gods and acted as
their leader, threatening the Olympians constantly (Hatzitsinidou 4). Atlas s dedication to the Titans in this war played a
massive role in Greek mythology. His devotion landed him in a different spot than the other Titans after the war was over.
For instance, Only Atlas became singled out and received the harshest punishment by King Zeus: he was doomed to hold
up the heavens with bare hands and bear their weight on his shoulders forever (Hatzitsinidou 4). The earth being a in the
shape of a sphere was first figured out by Atlas due to the punishment he was given. Prometheus played as big of a role in
Greek mythology as Atlas did, but did the opposite of way of Atlas. Prometheus sided with the God, Siding with the
winning side, Prometheus avoided being punished with the rest of the Titans and was therefore not sent to Tartarus, the
Underworld (Karas Megas 25). Even though Prometheus avoided punishment for being on the winning side, he still got
punished for another reason. The reason of the punishment was that he had tricked Zeus and then disobeyed Zeus.
Prometheus disobeyed Zeus, In an effort to help humanity again, managed to steal fire back and give it to humans (Karas
Megas 25). Prometheus knew he would get into trouble if he gave the fire

Atonement Essay
The word atonement means reparation for an offense or injury (Merriam Webster Dictionary). This word is the title of Ian
McEwan s best known novel, Atonement. This novel is quite literally, a story of sin and atonement (Merriam Webster
Dictionary). Set during WWII, Atonement follows the life of main protagonist Briony. The novel begins when Briony is
thirteen years old and witnesses a flirtation between her older sister Cecilia, and son of a household servant, Robbie
Turner. Briony s young mind creates a scene in her head that is completely different from what happened between the two
long time friends. When Briony s cousin Lola is raped one night while the family is searching for their two young cousins

Through this novel Ian McEwan is able to share a theme of atonement. In this essay I will combine the ideas of formalism
and structuralism to explain how various techniques within these concepts contribute to the cohesiveness of the organic
whole of the novel. I will begin my essay with formalist concepts by analyzing the novel s unique narrative, and how
McEwan s use of different literary techniques contribute to the aesthetic quality of the novel as a whole and shape the
larger themes of the novel. I will then relate the formalist concepts to the structuralist idea of the larger human experience
(OWL Purdue 2017). This idea is structured around the concept of shared human experience, which can be explained as a
liberal humanist move that assumes that since we are all human, we all share a basic human commonalities (OWL Purdue
2017). I will justify this concept by relating this to Khaled Hosseini s novel, The Kite

Essay On Mentoring
These last two weeks of mentoring have been going very smoothly for me. I feel as if my peer mentoring gears are finally
revving up as I m starting to understand how to be a successful peer mentor. The reason, I think, for my recent success as a
peer mentor and the collaboration with the peer mentoring team is due to the weekly articles. With the weekly articles, I m
able to realize what made previous collaborations in my life so successful and what made the more unfavorable groups
unsuccessful. This has allowed me to focus more on the successful traits by having the knowledge of it in my mind and
steer away from the bad traits. These successful traits would be the three ingredients for collaboration which is the
willingness to grant authority, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In all of my past successful collaborations, each member had a mutual respect for each other, enjoyed each other presence,
and worked together in an appropriate manner. To contrast this: in a previous group that performed not successfully, it was
due to internal conflict between my partner and me. There was an obvious tension between us that made me want to
disprove or reject any idea they would suggest, even if it was good. Although we managed to put aside our differences to
finish the project, not many positive memories remained from that collaboration other than the negativity and
awkwardness between us. I understand how tension in a group could harm the collaboration as it may lead to the rejection
of positive ideas or worse case scenario, sabotaging the project. Working in an atmosphere of stress definitely does not
promote insightful and efficient learning. To summarize my second reflection, I have learned the importance of the three
ingredients for a successful collaboration. Through elaborating on how each ingredient relates to an event in my life, I
believe it further strengthened my appreciation for both the article and collaborating in general. I plan to enforce these
ingredients in future group projects as it ll allow me to truly collaborate and

St Valentine s Day Massacre Research Paper
Crime, murder, and gangs were taking a hold of Chicago and one defining moment shocked everyone. Two gangs, the
Italian Sicilian mob and the Irish Jewish crew, had high tensions leading to many confrontations. But the problems
between the two seemed to stop after the St. Valentine s Day Massacre on February 14, 1929. Then, the hunt for those
responsible started. The crime itself involved many people, killed many people, and even had effects after the crime. There
were many well known people of Chicago in the two groups and high tensions between gangs that would eventually lead
up to the St. Valentine s Day Massacre. The two gangs, the Italian Sicilian mob and the Irish Jewish crew, had many
confrontations but one stood out. Dion O´Banion, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Moran and his gang after the attack, had been able to hold their territory for some time, but never really came back from
the massacre ( Feb. 2). Moran s gang had also lost a lot of strength and power in Chicago in a short time (Benson, 1). One
of the surviving victims, Frank Gusenberg, could have put the case to rest, serving those responsible, but when asked who
shot him, he said, No one shot me , and the case was left unsolved when Gusenberg later died from his wounds ( Saint 1).
The two leaders of the attack, were the ones with the strongest alibis. Al Capone and McGurn were not charged for the
crime and seemed to be free, but one gunman, Fred Burke, was arrested for the murder of a police officer and not for the
crime (Rosenberg, 3). Although Capone was not arrested for the crime, it did put him on the federal government s radar
and they had him arrested in 1931 for tax evasion (Rosenberg, 4). McGurn did not fare well either. One day, after the
seventh anniversary of the massacre, he was gunned down in a bowling alley, ending his career (Rosenberg, 4). The
massacre was however, the last time Capone and Moran interfered with each other. This was because Bugs was arrested in
1946 for small time robberies and later died in jail from lung cancer. Furthermore, Capone was arrested in 1931 ( Valentine
s 2). Even though many thought they knew who ordered the attack, there

The Contribution Of Galileo
Galileo Galilei, an Italian scientist, made groundbreaking observations that contributed to modern physics and astronomy.
Galileo established mathematics as the language of scientific discovery. He founded the scientific method and helped
establish the modern practice of experimentation and calculated laws of nature.
In July of 1609, Galileo developed his own telescope and with it, he made several astronomical discoveries. For example,
Galileo discovered that the surface of the moon is rough and uneven as opposed to smooth as people had thought. Galileo
also discovered with his telescope that many more stars exist than are visible to the naked eye. According to author E.B.,
Galileo also found sunspots upon the surface of our star and discovered the phases of Venus, which confirmed that the
planet circles the sun inside Earth s own orbit (45).
Galileo was also curious about how things move, and this curiosity led to important discoveries in physics. For instance, he
questioned the then current belief that heavy objects fall faster than light ones. In order to refute this, Galileo did many
experiments. For example, it is said that he dropped two different weights from the Tower of Pisa to show that they hit the
ground at the same time, a demonstration that paved the way for Isaac Newton s Laws of Motion. Galileo also tested his
theory by rolling balls down an inclined plane at various angles. These experiments lead to Galileo s the law of falling
bodies. This law states that all objects will fall at an equal rate when accounting for relatively minor differences in
aerodynamics and weather conditions.
Another discovery Galileo made with regards to motion was about the pendulum. The author of An Inquisitive Mind Kim
Zarins wrote about the experiment:
Galileo made two pendulums with string of equal lengths and a lead ball at the end of each. Then he pulled one ball back
twice as far as the other, and let them both go at the same time. He expected to see the ball with the longer swing take a
longer time to move back and forth. In fact, both pendulums moved in perfect synchronization! They swung at the same
rate, even though one pendulum was moving twice as far and one ball was heavier than the other (41).

Defendant Analysis
Defendant s position is that knowingly should apply to the acts of the crime and the age of the victim. In other words,
Defendant argues that knowingly should apply to (1) the verbs recruit, harbor, transport, provide, sell, purchase, receive,
isolate, entice, obtain, or maintain the use of a person; (2) a person under the age of eighteen; and (3) the purpose of
engaging in commercial sexual activity. The state, however, took the position that knowingly should only apply to the
actual acts or elements of the crime and not the age of the victim. In other words, the state argued that knowingly should

Understanding the similarities of Strain Theory, amp; General Theory of Crime Angela Sampson # 2396467 Sociology
345: Social Control Professor: James Chriss Cleveland State University April 30th 2012 Abstract: The purpose is to
identify the similarities between Strain theories, and General Theory of Crime. Strain was developed from the work of
Durkheim and Merton and taken from the theory of anomie. Durkheim focused on the decrease of societal restraint and the
strain that resulted at the individual level, and Merton studied the cultural imbalance that exists between goal and the
norms of the individuals of society. General Theory of Crime , In 1990 Michael R. Gottfredson and Travis Hirschi wrote
the book A General ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In essence, general strain theory proposed that an increase in strain would lead to an increase in anger, which may then
lead to an increase in crime (Agnew, 1992:61). These previously mentioned goals turn into strain when the individual is
faced with certain disjunctions in their life. The first of these disjunctions is the one that is the focus of previous strain
theories, the disjunction between aspirations and expectations. This is founded on the principle of culturally bound goals
and values that are accepted by everyone but yet not available to everyone. This idea of the American Dream then causes
strain and frustration in the individual who cannot achieve this dream through legitimate means. This theory has been
criticized because it does not explain middle class crime, it only focuses monetary goals, social class is the only barrier that
is considered, and it does not specify why some turn to deviance. The loss of positively valued stimuli Agnew s research in
the stress literature led him to the discovery that the removal of positive stimuli can also cause strain. This loss could
manifest itself in the form of a death or a broken relationship with a friend or romantic partner, or it could be a result of the
theft of a valued object. According to Agnew, the strain that is felt by the individual die to the loss could lead the individual
to delinquency as the individual attempts to prevent its loss,

George Catlett Marshall was an American Soldier and Statesman. According to May (2002) He is widely accepted as this
nation s most esteemed 20th century military figure and as a paragon of professionalism and officership (p. 1002). George
Marshall s character is what defined him. He was as an individual who could be trusted by his colleagues, his subordinates
and superiors alike. Of all the qualities of leadership, the one most valued by Marshall and perhaps most reflective of his
character was that of candor. In the spring of 1939, President Franklin D Roosevelt began the search for a replacement for

successful leadership was all about. Marshall basically believed that every officer should give his best to his troops and

  • 2. The Black Cat Research Paper The Black cat is one of the most famous short story of Edgar Allan Poe. In this work he s explaining the change of the human during the life, determined by living in this world and the bait there. In my opinion the themes, he devotes this story are familiar and close to him, so he can greatly express them. In the beginning of the story the man and his wife love animals and have the favourite black cat Pluto. In the meantime, the man becomes to be addicted on alcohol. Once, after he came back home, he is really mad, and poke one cat s eye. The man also treats his wife badly and starts hate his cat. One time when he comes drunk again he gets mad and hang his cat. • 3. Essay about Rap and Moral Character Rap and Moral Character In the article Rap and Moral Character by Wesley Cragg and Christine Koggel, the subject of concern is the consequences of listening to rap music and the effects on moral behaviour. The author suggests that rap and moral character are linked and that due to the natural context of rap, it promotes violence, crass materialism, crime, and is misogynistic and therefore corrupts a person s moral character. Based on their claims, the authors take the position that rap should be censured morally. In this paper, I will examine the authors claims, their reasoning, and their use of concepts. By doing so, I will be able to demonstrate that their thesis (rap corrupts moral character and deserves moral censure) is unjust ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This claim may seem to be fine if it stood by itself. However, in this context, the author is saying that everyone who listens to rap is bad, corrupt, and engages in criminal activities. In other words, the authors are saying that they are bad. This claim is loaded and assumes that everyone who listens to this type of music is bad because through the whole article, they talk about how rap disrupts moral character and how it leads to bad things. This can also be classified as a hasty generalization. This is a hasty generalization because the authors generalize beyond the limits of the population (implying that everyone who listens to rap is a certain type of person). The authors make another fallacious claim right after the hasty generalization claim. The claim Seeking out such material is like seeking out and choosing to watch portrayals of atrocities, such as rapes, executions, and real life violence, all of which are available in our culture and on the Internet is a prime example of Red Herring. Red Herring is used to divert attention away from an argument/claim to something more acceptable and easy to explain. The topic at hand in this article is how rap corrupts moral character and requires moral censure. The authors attempt to raise other examples of bad things in ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 4. THE FORGOTTEN HISTORY OF THE WESTERN CINEMA THE FORGOTTEN HISTORY OF THE WESTERN CINEMA The western movies are film genre where the scene generally takes place in North America during the American conquest of the West in the last decades of the nineteenth century. This genre appears since the invention of the cinema in 1985 finding its inspiration from literature and painting arts of the American Wild West. This genre reached its first success in the mid twentieth century during the golden age of Hollywood studios, before it had being reinvented by European filmmakers in the 1960s. The term Western has since been attributed to other visual arts such as literature, painting, television, cartoon, and now refers to all artistic production influenced by the atmosphere and the clichés ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In the 1880s, the Wild West was the theme of many shows such as the famous Wild West Show by Buffalo Bill. By 1900, the theme is already so popular that it naturally became a source of inspiration for the pioneers of the film industry. In 1903, hollywood released the first Western movie The Great Train Robbery . It is a twenty minutes silent movie written, produced, and directed by Edwin S. Porter. This production was directly inspired by the true story of the Wild Bunch gang also know as the Doolin Dalton gang during the 1890s (Clapham). The Western became officially a film genre in the 1920s. Very quickly, the western got detached little bit from reality to gain more freedom and imagination. Hollywood now created a mythical representation of the cowboy. This simple cowherd has become a heroic and virtuous character with impeccable and irreprochable qualities (Clapham, p.13). The western has also built a legend around iconic figures such as Billy the Kid and Jesse James. It was inspired by events such as the Gunfight of OK Corral, which was staged in many films. At the end of the movie The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance , produced by John Ford in 1962, a phrase captures the essence of western: When the legend sells better than the ... • 5. The Dubbed The Gilded Age The 1870 s 90 s in the United States was a period of rapid industrial, population, and city growth. Dubbed the Gilded Age by Mark Twain, this era of growth also brought on new, unprecedented problems. Unhealthy living and working conditions and corruption were rampant and immigrants settled in cities that were unequipped to deal with them. Under bossism, the dominant political system of the day, one political giant controlled much of the cities they were the boss of. These bosses only solved problems when they could see how it would keep them in power and relied on the vulnerable poor and immigrants to make up much of their base. They learned to appease them, but never to actually solve their problems. New inventions revolutionized day to day life. The transcontinental railroad, the telephone, the lightbulb, and electricity were all invented during this time. Factories sprung up everywhere, especially in cities. Cities grew by up to 80% as people, mainly immigrants, flocked to fill the job openings in the factories. But the apartments and houses in the cities were not equipped to hold as many people as they were forced to. Many of these new immigrant workers were limited to the only apartments they could afford, which were run down, often with multiple families living together in unsanitary conditions. And the workplace was no better. Men, women and children employed by the factories were often abused, forced to work inhumanely long shifts, and underpaid. There was ... • 6. My Favorite Beauty Growing up, I never really had a favorite anything. I didn t have a favorite cartoon character that I was obsessed with, as most children around the age of eight are. I didn t have a favorite outfit or shoes that I wanted to wear to just about any occasion. Although I did have a favorite food, mac and cheese, when it came to things like that it was just whatever I liked, I wanted. One day my mom and I were going shopping with my aunt. It was sunny outside so I wore some faded jean shorts, a striped pink and black tank top, and my black and pink Heely s. My mom had on a pair of jeans, a black T shirt, and some black Michael Kors flip flops. It was a 25 minute drive from my house to Sawgrass Mills Mall so I fell asleep on the ride there. My aunt met us at the front of the mall. As we walked in, you could feel the temperature change. There were people walking everywhere. I could even see some people sitting and getting massages because they ve probably been walking around all day. You could hear some people on the phone, some just having friendly conversations with people they probably didn t even know, and even a baby crying. We had been in the mall for about an hour and wasn t even halfway through the building. Went in a few clothing and shoe stores and left with at least three bags. The last shoe store we went into was Footlocker which is where I got a pair of pink Nikes. When walking out of the store, we could hear the voices of children coming from next door so we went ... • 7. Plastic Pollution Essay The Global Impact of Plastic Pollution Entering Marine Ecosystems Approximately, 280 million tons of plastic is produced year round around the globe (Sigler, 2014) which accounts for 8% of the worldwide manufacturing for oil (Vegter, et al., 2014). Plastics are a major component in most consumer products; the reason being is that plastic is inexpensive, lightweight, durable, and an excellent insulator. For this reason, plastic can be found in most items from: storage containers, packaging material, communication devices, and transportation. Unfortunately, 3.5 million pieces of plastic are estimated to enter the ocean shores daily; one third to a half of the garbage found in the ocean originate from the beverage industry (Cohen, 2015). This litter is a symptom of our throw away society and our approach on how we manage our natural resources (UN, 2011). Nearly one third of plastics that is generated are for single use items such as: floss, straws, stirrer, coffee lids, and disposable cutlery (Sigler, 2014). The presence of plastic debris will not only effect oceanic habitat and ecosystems but have an economic effect on anthropogenic activities such as tourism on beaches and fishing industry. Although many countries are eager to prevent and manage waste surrounding their coastal waters; none are willing to take responsibility over the large accumulation of waste in ocean gyres, known as garbage patches, and for good reason. These garbage patches are located in ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 8. Boy Scouts College Essay All across America, young men join together in a special organization called the Boy Scouts of America. Scouts from 1st grade to seniors in high school work toward a common goal: growing up into a functional, mature citizen and leader of the United States. I joined this great organization in 2006 as a Wolf Cub Scout and rose through the ranks to get into Boy Scouts in 2010. I didn t know what to expect from such a widely popular, military like group. Will I get pushed to my limit? How much can Scouts impact me? Is Cub Scouts like what others say? In elementary school, I never wanted to do anything, just go to school, stay silent, and come home to see my family. My parents felt that I needed something to get me going and get me more open, so ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... But, most importantly, I learned how to lead and I became useful to the world. Just hearing the title reminds me of my greatest achievement and acts as a pick me up whenever I feel poor. The rank got me closer to my family and friends through learning how to treat them with respect and kindness. I have better preparation and planning, even if the plans pertain to far ahead in the future. My faith in God and His guidance improved because of my hope and belief in His assistance in helping me. I feel more giving and charitable from learning that I do not need what I want, and someone else more deserving should receive them. Additionally, it looks fantastic on résumés and applications and can give me that needed edge over anyone else. I could automatically advance two ranks in the military and become an officer if I enlist. Not many young men have the opportunity to experience the adventure that I had, and I hope that changes someday. It revolutionizes kids to become the best they can be, and Scouts use me as a perfect example. They didn t think that I could make it through Scouts as far as I did because I kept silent. • 9. The Importance Of Art Therapy Art therapy involves using art to facilitate discussion with an art psychotherapist or therapist, using art materials that can help express thoughts and feelings. It also can provide another way of communicating when it is hard to talk. There is no need to be good at art; the aim is not to improve your skills. In art therapy, you will have time to talk and think about your difficulties with the art psychotherapist or therapist, and it may help you to understand yourself better, gain insight and for change to occur. The piece is kept short and sweet to maintain a clear focus throughout. In this anecdote, motif is often used through the repetition of shushing and the different types of it to convey a message to the offender to stop disrupting the show. He describes himself as giving the offenders a good hearty Shhh! multiple times throughout the piece to different offenders, each with a different situation. Mostly, the Shhh! comes into play with the conversationalists , but there are other situations in which an extra sentence is used as their rudeness becomes defiant policy just to prove some sort of point to him. This motif is used to show constant efforts to stop offenders and striking a blow for moviegoers everywhere even though his efforts, based on the offender, are futile because of their lack of respect for him and those around him. • 11. Identity In Shakespeare s Romeo And Juliet To thine own self be true is a respected age old saying, but while it epitomises the value of self understanding and integrity, society often forces false identities onto individuals. What ensues is a culture where we constantly act in a way that is not genuine to who we are, to please family, friends and to follow society s pattern. Revered writer William Shakespeare addresses this theme over multiple texts, namely Romeo and Juliet, in which two star cross d lovers challenge their identities with true love, and ultimately forfeit their lives as a result. Shakespeare presents the notion that despite the pain and suffering that may come with being true to oneself, it is necessary to achieve authenticity regardless of these consequences. He proves ... In a similar encounter, Romeo decides that he must reconcile with Tybalt as being with Juliet is being true to himself, and being with Juliet means becoming kin of Tybalt. He completely disregards his status as a Montague and his hate for Capulets to prove his sincerity, by stating, And so, good Capulet which name I tender as dearly as my own be satisfied. This is another scenario in which Shakespeare shows the pain that comes with challenging identity, by killing Romeo s dear friend Mercutio in the fight that ensues. The highly revered modern film Dead Poet s Society (1989) continues Shakespeare s theme through Neil s journey. • 14. Analysis Of Dave Barry s Guys Vs. Men Within his piece, Guys Vs. Men, Dave Barry articulates the different perspectives available on viewing males. Throughout his piece he utilizes a satirical tone to showcase this idea. The audience that Dave Barry is attempting to convey his message to is the general public. I believe this to be an appropriate assessment as the level of language employed by Dave Barry, throughout his piece, lacks complexity. His use of satire also helps to identify the audience. This is because the use of humour can be seen as a way to capture the attention of a reader quickly in hopes that the reader continues, and ultimately finishes the article. Using these as evidence I can conclude the audience being targeted is the general public. • 15. Sense Of Sesponsibility And Sense And Sensibility The most relatable novel to Austen s Pride and Prejudice is her earlier novel Sense and Sensibility written in 1811. The largest comparisons that can be made are the function of screens that shelter, the distinction of being sensible and having sensibility, as well as the necessity of wealth to determine character. According to Sally Palmer, Austen is using fire screens as a symbol for characters who are trying to shield potentially heated emotional outburst or the intense heat of social discourse that would ruin evanescent happiness. The two characters that symbolize this would be Mr. Darcy and Elinor Dashwood of Sense and Sensibility. Darcy wants to protect all he cares about including Mr. Bingley, his innocent sister Georgiana, and later ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The author Inger Sigrun Brodey, a reputable JASNA s North American Scholar who is a frequent speaker at Jane Austen Society meetings, writes in the article Making sense of sensibility. from Persuasions: The Jane Austen Journal that Marianne Dashwood symbolizes sensibility and her sister Elinor represents common sense. Marianne shares many similarities with Lydia Bennet, the youngest daughter in Pride and Prejudice. Both believe their world is naturally good without corruption such as greed and lust to mar it. Both have foibles that strangers generally are naturally good. However, in actuality there are very good actors that manipulate the vulnerable. Humans have a way of being imminently selfish and Austen is depicting it with the characters such as the dastardly Mr. Wickham of Pride and Prejudice and thoughtless Mr. Willoughby of Sense and Sensibility. Both men affect their counterparts in a negative way and take advantage of the situation. This creates a bias of distrustful feelings, that sympathy may be able to heal, but society might think is self absorption. Nonetheless, pity is created for the poor creatures. In fact, it is sensibility or empathy that is necessary to have a deeper connection like love or hate, and it is fear of rejection that may be the culprit of a hesitancy to love. This relates to the larger picture of the transition between the Enlightenment and Romanticism, sense contrasts sensibility because sense has logic and sensibility is fueled by emotional reactions ... • 16. Self Destruction In The Black Cat By Edgar Allen Poe By analyzing The Black Cat by Edgar Allen Poe, we can see that the main character in the story makes exceptionally perverse choices. The motive for his actions can be found in clues given throughout the story. We can investigate what happened to the man, and see exactly what caused him to respond in such a violent manner. To further look into the motives for the characters actions, we must inspect and evaluate whether it was self destruction that turned him mad, or an effect of outside events. The narrator acts in a way that shows us that he has self destructive tendencies. We can assume this after we see him kill his cat, and in other parts of the story. He regrets killing his cat almost instantaneously. He says, I experienced a sentiment half of horror, half of remorse, for the crime of which I had been guilty (Poe 5). He deeply regrets cutting the cats eye out. He decided to kill the cat because he was so emotionally guilty. He tells us, One night, returning home, much intoxicated, from one of my haunts about town. (Poe 5). He was drunk, and this means that alcohol played an essential part in his perverse decisions. The fact that his house burned down the night of the murder is symbolic. The night of the day that he killed Pluto, he says, The curtains of my bed were in flames. The whole house was blazing (Poe 6). His house is all of his achievements and worldly wealth, and it was burned to the ground in flames. It is a direct result of his sin of murdering the innocent cat. It could be seen as a symbol of his eternal destiny. It is a punishment for killing the cat. While alcohol is a killer, outside influences could be the main reason for the characters perverse actions. The character mentions his childhood briefly in the beginning of the story. I view the act as the climax of inner, suppressed anxieties that are contained in how the narrator goes back to when he was a young boy. His friends made fun of him for being so nice and docile. My tenderness of heart was even so conspicuous as to make me the jest of my companions (Poe 3). His friends seem to have made fun of him because he was a good person. Dilation (widening or narrowing) of the parabola occurs when the basis parabola y=x2 is multiplied or divided (m) therefore changing the equation to either y=mx2 or y=x^2/m. For instance, if the parabola is multiplied by two the parabola becomes narrower whereas if the parabola is divided by two the parabola becomes wider. This is evident in the graph in question 1b as when the basis parabola is multiplied by fourteen the parabola becomes narrower however when the basis parabola is divided by fourteen it becomes wider. Vertical (upwards or downwards) translation of the parabola occurs when the basis parabola y=x2, y value of each point is increased or decreased therefore changing the equation to either to y=x2+h or y=x2 h. For instance, in order to translate the parabola upwards by 5 units it shifts the general point (a, a2) to (a, a2+5) therefore making the equation, y= x2+5. The vertex of this parabola is now (0,5) but it still has the same axis of symmetry. Likewise, when the basis parabola becomes y=x2 5 the parabola is translated 5 units down with the vertex (0, 5). This can be seen through the graph in question 1a as the parabolas are vertically translated upwards or downwards by using the addition or subtraction of fourteen. Conversely, horizontal translation of the parabola occurs when the translation parabola equation y=x2±h is changed to y=(x±h)2. Therefore, the horizontal translation for the parabola is changed by the value of the variable h, that is subtracted from x before the squaring operation. For example, in order to translate the parabola to the left by 4 units it shifts the general point (a, a2) to (a, (a+2)2) therefore making the equation, y= (x+2)2. • 28. St Valentine s Day Massacre Research Paper Crime, murder, and gangs were taking a hold of Chicago and one defining moment shocked everyone. Two gangs, the Italian Sicilian mob and the Irish Jewish crew, had high tensions leading to many confrontations. But the problems between the two seemed to stop after the St. Valentine s Day Massacre on February 14, 1929. Then, the hunt for those responsible started. The crime itself involved many people, killed many people, and even had effects after the crime. There were many well known people of Chicago in the two groups and high tensions between gangs that would eventually lead up to the St. Valentine s Day Massacre. The two gangs, the Italian Sicilian mob and the Irish Jewish crew, had many confrontations but one stood out. Dion O´Banion, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Moran and his gang after the attack, had been able to hold their territory for some time, but never really came back from the massacre ( Feb. 2). Moran s gang had also lost a lot of strength and power in Chicago in a short time (Benson, 1). One of the surviving victims, Frank Gusenberg, could have put the case to rest, serving those responsible, but when asked who shot him, he said, No one shot me , and the case was left unsolved when Gusenberg later died from his wounds ( Saint 1). The two leaders of the attack, were the ones with the strongest alibis. Al Capone and McGurn were not charged for the crime and seemed to be free, but one gunman, Fred Burke, was arrested for the murder of a police officer and not for the crime (Rosenberg, 3). Although Capone was not arrested for the crime, it did put him on the federal government s radar and they had him arrested in 1931 for tax evasion (Rosenberg, 4). McGurn did not fare well either. One day, after the seventh anniversary of the massacre, he was gunned down in a bowling alley, ending his career (Rosenberg, 4). The massacre was however, the last time Capone and Moran interfered with each other. This was because Bugs was arrested in 1946 for small time robberies and later died in jail from lung cancer. Furthermore, Capone was arrested in 1931 ( Valentine s 2). Even though many thought they knew who ordered the attack, there ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 29. The Contribution Of Galileo Galileo Galilei, an Italian scientist, made groundbreaking observations that contributed to modern physics and astronomy. Galileo established mathematics as the language of scientific discovery. He founded the scientific method and helped establish the modern practice of experimentation and calculated laws of nature. In July of 1609, Galileo developed his own telescope and with it, he made several astronomical discoveries. For example, Galileo discovered that the surface of the moon is rough and uneven as opposed to smooth as people had thought. Galileo also discovered with his telescope that many more stars exist than are visible to the naked eye. According to author E.B., Galileo also found sunspots upon the surface of our star and discovered the phases of Venus, which confirmed that the planet circles the sun inside Earth s own orbit (45). Galileo was also curious about how things move, and this curiosity led to important discoveries in physics. For instance, he questioned the then current belief that heavy objects fall faster than light ones. In order to refute this, Galileo did many experiments. For example, it is said that he dropped two different weights from the Tower of Pisa to show that they hit the ground at the same time, a demonstration that paved the way for Isaac Newton s Laws of Motion. Galileo also tested his theory by rolling balls down an inclined plane at various angles. These experiments lead to Galileo s the law of falling bodies. This law states that all objects will fall at an equal rate when accounting for relatively minor differences in aerodynamics and weather conditions. Another discovery Galileo made with regards to motion was about the pendulum. The author of An Inquisitive Mind Kim Zarins wrote about the experiment: Galileo made two pendulums with string of equal lengths and a lead ball at the end of each. Then he pulled one ball back twice as far as the other, and let them both go at the same time. He expected to see the ball with the longer swing take a longer time to move back and forth. In fact, both pendulums moved in perfect synchronization! They swung at the same rate, even though one pendulum was moving twice as far and one ball was heavier than the other (41). ... Understanding the similarities of Strain Theory, amp; General Theory of Crime Angela Sampson # 2396467 Sociology 345: Social Control Professor: James Chriss Cleveland State University April 30th 2012 Abstract: The purpose is to identify the similarities between Strain theories, and General Theory of Crime. Strain was developed from the work of Durkheim and Merton and taken from the theory of anomie. Durkheim focused on the decrease of societal restraint and the strain that resulted at the individual level, and Merton studied the cultural imbalance that exists between goal and the norms of the individuals of society. General Theory of Crime , In 1990 Michael R. Gottfredson and Travis Hirschi wrote the book A General ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In essence, general strain theory proposed that an increase in strain would lead to an increase in anger, which may then lead to an increase in crime (Agnew, 1992:61). These previously mentioned goals turn into strain when the individual is faced with certain disjunctions in their life. The first of these disjunctions is the one that is the focus of previous strain theories, the disjunction between aspirations and expectations. This is founded on the principle of culturally bound goals and values that are accepted by everyone but yet not available to everyone. This idea of the American Dream then causes strain and frustration in the individual who cannot achieve this dream through legitimate means. This theory has been criticized because it does not explain middle class crime, it only focuses monetary goals, social class is the only barrier that is considered, and it does not specify why some turn to deviance. The loss of positively valued stimuli Agnew s research in the stress literature led him to the discovery that the removal of positive stimuli can also cause strain. This loss could manifest itself in the form of a death or a broken relationship with a friend or romantic partner, or it could be a result of the theft of a valued object. According to Agnew, the strain that is felt by the individual die to the loss could lead the individual to delinquency as the individual attempts to prevent its loss, ...
