Concise Diction In Hills Like White Elephants By Ernest...
In Hills Like White Elephants, Ernest Hemingway uses controlled concise diction to develop a tension
filled tone, which characterizes the woman as a pushover to the man, revealing how society gives in to
lust, blinding them from the love they desire.
Through the precise use of diction between the woman ( jig ) and the man, Hemingway reveals how a
lack of knowing someone can lead to emotional dismay. Concise diction in a relationship means,
conversation only scratches the surface and the two lovers don t truly know about the other person s
emotions. The story is full of short, one line phrases of conversation between the couple about trivial
things. They converse about the lovely hills and the simple operation, yet they never ask each other
about their feelings. The lack of in depth communication of opinions creates a tension filled
atmosphere that just keeps building up and up as the story continues. The simple operation, an
abortion, is seen by the couple as the issue they need to resolve, however, the man, who can t handle
the responsibility, instead of talking it through with his lover chooses to manipulate her. He tries to
convince jig, who is easily pushed over as she is stuck by lust and will do anything to keep the
relationship together. She doesn t care to sacrifice her happiness for his, rather she fears that if she
doesn t go through with the operation, he will leave her, she is indecisive and relies on the man to
make many decisions. The man deceives

Advertising Cigarettes and Chewing Tobacco Essay examples
Advertising Cigarettes and Chewing Tobacco
Tobacco, tumor causing teeth staining smelly puking habit. Advertising has become a way of life. The
average American is exposed to 3,000 advertisements a day. These advertisements come from the
television, radio, news papers, billboard signs, and countless other ways. The advertisers use different
ways of attracting a consumer to buy their product. One of the strategies that the author will use is
called appeals, which uses ethos (ethics), pathos (feelings), and logos (logic). Some people believe it
is and will continue to destroy life and moral values in our nation. The rhetorical triangle is used very
well in advertising; in some cases it is hard to catch the imbedded message. The ... Show more content

The kids do not see before and after pictures of people who have smoked for years in the magazines or
commercials. The youth also think they will not get addicted. I also believe that by the time most
people are the age twenty they have decided whether or not they are going to smoke or not. Kids see
attractive people in movies and commercials smoking, or cartoon animals smoking and they think it is
cool. If a product, like cigarettes, will make kids feel like they fit in, then they will do it even if the
product will hurt them. This kind of audience, the youth, is very vulnerable because they will do
anything to get accepted by people.
The author for the audience of chewing tobacco is targeting young blue collar men ages eighteen to
around thirty. The ads are targeting the young men who work outside or like doing out door activities.
In this Copenhagen ad the quote next to the rider says I never walk when I can ride. And I never ride

Great Art Will Be A Transparent Reflection Of Society
Great art will always be a transparent reflection of the society in which it was produced. The greatest
artists are able to blend cultures and practices into a single work, creating an aesthetic dialogue that
challenges viewers to look at the piece with multiple perspectives and creates the opportunity for
continuous discovery upon subsequent visits. On the first floor of the new Broad Museum, in
Downtown Los Angeles, there is a piece of art executed by the prolific Japanese artist, Takashi
Murakami, which does just this. In a room that is solely dedicated to the work of Murakami, there is a
piece that seems to stand out more than the rest.
In the Land of the Dead, Stepping on the Tail of a Rainbow (2014), is a memorizing work that ...

Through the use of his famous superflat technique , Murakami removes all texture and physical depth
from the painting creating a body of work that feels seamlessly absent of human involvement. There is
no physical trace of texture or brush stroke, the paint has the appearance of being printed onto the
canvas. Additionally, through this technique, Murakami is able to compress characteristics of digital
design, high and low arts, pop culture, and historical culture all into one piece. As one begins to
analyze what is taking place on the canvas, this becomes more evident.
As one walks around the first floor gallery and gazes at this work by Murakami which spans two walls
wrapping from one wall, through the corner, to the next wall one will see images of anime, skulls,
fish, boats, geishas and more. The entire stretch of the nearly eighty two foot long canvas seems to be
awash in the enormous waves of a tsunami. These waves and the rest of the characters on the canvas
are composed of a selection of radiant acrylics, which fill the rendered pictures on the canvas with a
psychedelic palette of colors. Within each wave, various historical references can found. Most notably,
a color pattern alluding to Katsushika Kokusai s famous painting, The Great Wave off Kanagawa, is
used to fill in several strips of waves that

The Impact of Emmett Till s Death Essay
On August 28th, 1955. A young, African American, fourteen year old boy, Emmett Louis Bobo Till,
was murdered in Money, Mississippi after flirting with a white woman ( Emmett Till , 2014). Emmett
Till s story brought attention to the racism still prevalent in the south in 1955, even after attempts
nationwide to desegregate and become equal. Emmett s harsh murder and unfair trial brought light
into the darkness and inequality that dominated the south during the civil rights movement. Emmett s
life was proof that African American s were equal to whites and that all people were capable of
becoming educated and successful even through difficulties. Emmett s death had an even greater
impact, providing a story and a face to the unfair treatment ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

The controversy could be found across the nation, but the north was less subject to the intense racism
that was still found and fought for in the south. This change in environment and lifestyle in the
northern city of Chicago allowed Emmett Till to interact with white men and women regularly and
primarily freely. Desegregation became familiar to Emmett, and he became comfortable to speak more
freely than he had in his earlier years, regardless of race. ( Emmett Till , 2014)
In 1955 Emmett planned to visit family in Money, Mississippi ( The death of , n.d.). The trip was
scheduled for August 20th and Emmett was going to stay with his great uncle Moses Wright ( The
death of , n.d.). As J. Williams writes in a book about Emmett s life, the day before Emmett left for his
trip Mamie Till, Emmett s mother, gave him the ring from his father, inscribed with his father s
initials, L.T. (1987). After a day long train ride Emmett arrived in Mississippi and joined his great
uncle and friends to begin his visit to the south. A few days after his arrival, Emmett went with friends
to a local grocery store where they spent time relaxing after picking cotton during the day. To the
disbelief of his friends, Emmett bragged that his girlfriend at home was a white girl. Emmett was a
comical young man and a rambunctious teenager, who when dared

Waiting For The Rain Tengo Character Traits
Tengo is one of the main characters in, Waiting for the Rain. He lives in a kraal that is one mile away
from a farm. His parents work on the farm for the Oubaas. He is friends with a bot named Frikkie,
who is the Oubaas s nephew. His mother and father work for the Oubaas which is how Tengo and
Frikkie met. Throughout the story, there are three distinct character traits that you can infer about
Tengo; he is curious, intelligent, and observant. Tengo can clearly be seen as curious. Tengo wanted to
know why the sea tasted like salt yet the river tasted sweet (pg. 17). He wanted to know why certain
areas of land produced better clay than others like the river near the dam (pg. 17). He also wondered
why mosquitoes bite, yet butterflies don t (pg. 17). All of these questions would have been answered if
he had someone or someplace to learn. Tengo was bound to for the most part always be curious as he
didn t have a place to get his questions answered. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Tengo was able to learn things easily (pg. 18). He was also able to design and create amazing clay
figure without being taught any techniques (pg. 20). Some of these clay figures include a collection of

willingly gave to Frikkie. Tengo was able to memorize book that he read by heart (pg. 18). Although
the books were for children, that still take talent to memorize an entire book. Tengo has become a very

Location Based Social Network Case Study 1
In the recent times, there is a rapid growth of location based social networking applications such as
Twitter, Yelp and Foursquare, which have an increasing number of social media users. Nowadays,
fundamental activity of the modern society is to measure the movement of the people(Lun et al.). The
study of mobility behavior and travel activity analysis can be done by developing Origin Destination
(OD) models and to investigate their performance using location based social network data which is
capable with the potential to provide traffic design with higher spatial and temporary resolution at
lower cost than traditional methods of survey(Kheiri, Karimipour, and Forghani 2015). This data was

Therefore, they practically investigated how gender is important in the travel and activity design of
active local Foursquare users in New York City(Yeran and Ming 2015). The results reveal that there
are gender differences in the travel and activity patterns of active local users in New York City at both
the individual and aggregate level. By contrasting at the spatial dispersion of Twitter based data in
weekdays with other more generally used original source of data to authenticate social network based
data, four step planning model was used to obtain OD pairs to understand zoning level at aggregate
level and to compare twitter based trips with travel based travel demand model trips and to develop a
conversion method from OD pattern from tweets from regression models(Lee, Gao, and Goulias

everyday exercises which can be used to obtain information like time, location and purpose behind
their distinctive exercises, particularly if it is connected to ground truth data. Utilizing Twitter

Comparing The Song Of Creation And The Babylonian Creation...
Creation Myth Paper In this creation myth paper, one can will be comparing The Song of Creation
from the Rig Veda on page 15 in Fiero s The Humanistic Tradition, Book 1, with The Babylonian
Creation myth on page 19 to 20 in Fiero s The Humanistic Tradition, Book 1. The Song of Creation
from the Rig Veda on page 15 originates from India. Meanwhile The Babylonian Creation myth on
page 19 to 20 originated from Babylon. The main differences between these two creation myths is that
the first creation myth is based on the importance of water as the necessary requirement for the
beginning of life. For example, in the Rig Veda, the creation of the world was stated to come from a
watery darkness (Fiero 15). Meanwhile the second myth is more ... Show more content on

The primary source narrates about how back then before the universe was created, there was no
existence, no death or immortality (Fiero 15). It also raises questions about the creation of the universe
such as What covered it? Where was it? In whose keeping? (Fiero 15). These shows the uncertainty of
how the universe came to be. Meanwhile in The Babylonian Creation myth, it narrates or tells the
story about not only how the universe was created, but also how the gods entered the world, how the
earth came to be, as well as the creation of Babylon and humans (Fiero 19). In the first myth, the
universe was created when That One which came to be enclosed in nothing, arose at last, born of the
power of heat (Fiero 15). In my opinion, one canthink that back in the time, the people who created
this myth believed in a geocentric view of the universe where Earth was in the center. And that that
One came to be the sun which gave light to the world and allowed the prospering of plants and life.
Some imagery found in this primary source were darkness wrapped in darkness , only illumined water
cosmic waters, in depths unfathomed, (Fiero 15). These forms of imagery depicts or describes what
the universe was like before the that One arose. The order of creation in this myth seems to be that of
the One being in the empty universe before anything else and then when that One arose, he or she
brought heat as well as light in the world which most likely led to the beginning of light in the world
leading to life. In this creation myth, one can feel like the One is the universe or the creation because
according to lines 23, it states The gods themselves are later than creation (Fiero 15). So one can feel
like the universe created the gods not the other way around. In the text, life began with the arrival

The Similarities Between Classical Music and Ellington s...
One of the greatest tragedies in the 20th century can be seen in the debasing of the Jazz genre as a
unworthy equal to it s predecessor, European Classical music. This can be seen in various statements
about Jazz, such as Boris Gibalin commit, The Jazz Mania has taken on the character of a lingering
illness and must be cured by means of forceful intervention. 1 This conflict can be traced through out
the history of Jazz, as Classical composers have relatively disregarded this new type of music. Before
Duke Ellington s Cotton Club performances, Jazz play on the radio was delegated for late night
audience only. This sub culture treatment has led many critics to disregard the Jazz movement as a
dance craze, or unsuccessful ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Complete artistic improvisational is only accomplished by the single performer, but Yet the moment a
group or a collective improvisational steps in some relatively simple and more or less inflexible
convention becomes essential if mere chaos is to be kept at bay. 3 This is why Duke Ellington s
Orchestra played such an integrate role in his development of musical scores. It is here that we see the
originality of Duke Ellington, for in his tailoring a piece around the performer, he created the
impression of pure interpretations within the framework of structure. As Duke once said, Another
theory they hold is that there is such thing as a unadulterated improvisation without any preparation or
anticipation. It is my firm belief that there has never been anyone who has blown even two bars worth
listening to who didn t have some idea what he was going to play, before he started 4 This is an
important aspect to bear in mind for this argument, for the mistake that Classical critics make is this
distortion of the improvisational aspect to such extremes that one would believe that no compositional
writing takes place. While obviously some improvisation happens in Jazz assembles, it is not that
extreme, and in Ellington s case this improvisation of certain musicians was actually written in the
piece. Ellington work is centered on the interplay between written and improvised music. 5 As one can
see both types of composers utilize their musicians to

Short Essays in The Great Cat Massacre by Darnton
The Great Cat Massacre
Although the title of this book strikes the reader as unusual it begins to make complete sense once it is
read. This book is a series of short essays by Darnton. The second section, which is titled Workers
Revolt: The great Cat Massacre of the Rue Saint Sérverin brings the reader directly into the views of
the working class during the 1700s in France. This style of writing allows situations to be viewed
through the lens of those who are experiencing it, making for a more interesting read. The context of
this portion of the book truly gives an in depth account of the emotions and conditions that peasants
would meet with while being treated as inferior to even the animals by the masters. It can be said that
Darnton included this portion of the book to show the customs of the French during this time as well
as to be able to see the way that the working class lived. From the reading the working class was the
base of society, doing the work for the noblemen and everyday citizens. In this section it involves a
particular situation with two men that are apprentices in a noble house. Apprentices would learn their
way into a position of a trade and gain their success this way. Unfortunately, the apprenticeship
program was not the most enjoyable experience. These men were not allowed to sit at a table for
meals, they had to sleep in freezing rooms that were dirty and horrid, and were forced to eat the food
scraps that even the cats rejected. These men

Alabama finds himself defending an innocent black man falsely charged with rape. Meanwhile, his

Jem, and Dill persistently plague the Radleys with their childish antics. Some people feel the children

A consistent theme throughout the book is that perspective is everything. Atticus Finch even tells them
this by saying, you never really understand a person until you consider things from his point of view .
. . until you climb into his skin and walk around in it. As Scout is walking Boo Radley back to his
home after the attack, it dawns on her that Boo is not a monster, but simply a man with no desire to
interact with the outside world. She realizes that as she went about her everyday life fooling around on
the Radley property, walking to school, and playing games, Boo was observing all of this from his
own perspective. The events also teach the children innocence is not to be destroyed as Atticus
illustrates when he tells Scout and Jem it is a sin to kill a mockingbird, because they do nothing but
make pretty music for everyone to enjoy. Out of fear of tarnishing his own reputation, Bob Ewell
forces his daughter to falsely accuse a black man of raping her. The man was innocent, yet the jury
convicts him as guilty and sentences him to execution. As if that were not enough, Bob Ewell tries to
kill Scout and Jem, two innocent kids, merely because their father defended the innocent black man in
court. Boo s innocence becomes evident to Scout the moment the identity of their rescuer is revealed
as Boo, himself. She finally identifies Boo Radley as the mockingbird he always

A human shadow, in its most basic form, requires three things: exposure to a light source, a person,
and a surface to cast the shadow onto. A shadow s form is entirely dependent on the person creating

movements made by its creator and the respective position of the light. But what is a shadow that does

Is Exxon s top spot in danger?
Ben Van Beurden, Chief Executive Officer of Royal Dutch Shell has laid out an ambitious plan to
overtake Exxon Mobil, the number one gas company in the world. Prior to 1990s, Shell was the leader
in total shareholder returns, however, it was overtaken by its rivals using the acquisition route. Mr.
Beurden believes that Shell will be able to regain its lost glory post the acquisition of the BG group.
I am determined to get us to that number one place, Mr. Beurden said after outlining the company s
long term strategy in London. I want to create a world class investment case for Shell and our
shareholders, reports Bloomberg.
Shell with a market capitalization of $216.6 billion has a lot of catching up to do if it wants to surpass
Exxon s market capitalization of $379.5 billion. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The reason for higher valuation is the confidence that Exxon is in a better position to tide over the
current downturn in oil prices and it is a better managed company than Shell.
Shell s gross and operating margins, return on equity, assets to cash flow are way below that of Exxon.
Though Shell has narrowed the gap for total shareholder returns, Exxon still has an upper hand.
After the purchase of BG, the total debt of Shell has increased to $81 billion, whereas Exxon with $43
billion of debt has options left on the table.
To impress the investor community, Shell plans to increase its free cash flow per share, improve its
returns and run the company conservatively. In order to do so, Shell has capped annual investments at
$30 billion until 2020 and it has left options open to reduce spending below its lower target range of
$25 billion in case crude price hovers close to the current levels of $50 per barrel or drops below it.
It plans to slow down investments in the liquefied natural gas business as

Importance Of Cultural Diversity In Nursing
This paper will be discussing the importance of understanding Cultural diversity in nursing. It will be
focusing on understanding the knowledge of cultural diversity and why it s important. I will also
discuss the different attitude that nurses are expose to from different culture. As reference I will be
using the Journal continuing Education in Nursing ; (L. Price, July 1994). According to L. Price
cultural diversity challenges health care providers to facilitate bridging cross cultural gaps with
clients. He believes that it is through culturally relevant care that nurses can serve the needs of all
clients in our diverse society. Mr. Price also stated that nurses can use the following steps to have a
better connection with patients that have a different background from them. The four steps include the
following; (1) health care providers should assess their own cultural beliefs and be aware of general
ethnic, regional, and religious beliefs and practices in their area; (2) develop a teaching plan; (3)
implement the plan. Those are the three topics that I will be discussing in the following pages.
As a uncertificated nurse I strongly believe that it is very crucial for me and my peers to understand
culture and its function in human behavior and society. Specially in Florida where it s a melting pot,
you get in contact with individuals from different national background and ethnicities on a daily base.
Nurses should have knowledge base of their patients

The Lindbergh Kidnapping
The Lindbergh Baby Kidnapping Jeff Harris 5/19/2015 There are three main parts that make up our
criminal justice system in America, the police, courts, and corrections. The Lindbergh baby, Charles
Lindbergh Jr., was kidnapped from his bed sometime between the hours of 7:30pm and 10pm on
March 1, 1932. (www.History.com). He was suffering from a cold and was left to drift off to sleep by
his nanny, Betty Gow, with the window open. (www.clickamericana.com). When his father came to
check on him and found him gone, he found a note demanding a $50,000 ransom. Three days later,
another ransom note was found demanding $70,000. March 9, 1932 a man named John F. Condon, a
retired teacher, claimed to have made contact with the kidnappers. He ... Show more content on

Mr. Hauptman did not spend much time on death row. He was executed by electrocution on April 4,
1936. Many people, including his family, tried to get him to confess in hopes of saving his life, or at
least giving the Lindbergh family some peace. He went to his grave that day with the truth. He
maintained his innocence until the end. In an interview conducted by two reporters, he stated that if he
had to die, he would die an innocent man when asked if he was afraid of the electric chair.
(www.law2.umkc.edu). Edward Reilly said the verdict was one of the great miscarriages of justice.
(www.clickamericana.com). This case has been studied and theorized on since it happened. Since he
never told the world the truth, we may never know. I believe, if the police had been more diligent we
may have known what really happened. It is true that you never really know what happened unless
you were there, but even then everyone present has a different account of the facts. The defense
attorney committed several grievous errors, as well as the police investigators. There are allegations of
paid witnesses, as well as jury misconduct. In today s courtroom settings things would go a lot
smoother and I believe Mr. Hauptmann would have received a mistrial at the very least. Was he
guilty? The world wonders. Did Mr. Lindbergh kill his own child and create this elaborate hoax to
cover it up? He certainly had the financial resources to do

Reflection Paper On Volleyball Player
This Club season, I would like to improve my knowledge of the sport, understand how to be a
supportive teammate, and develop into a better and more experienced volleyball player.
The position I enjoy the most is the outside hitter. I am fond of this position because I am not only a
skilled and talented hitter, but I am also useful in backrow. Therefore, an outside hitter is my desired
position because I believe this is where I would be the most useful to the team.
I would absolutely consider playing another position because I desire to support my team in anyway
the coaches see fit.
A position I am not willing to play is right side hitter because in a previous club season, I was placed
in that position and I did not get much playing time and I felt as though I was not benefitting my team
in any way. Also, I enjoy passing in the backrow and the position of right side hitter is only a front row
position.
My grade point average is a 98.75. My grades currently range from a 97 100%. School is a very big
aspect of my life and my goal is to continue to move forward in my studies.
On average, I study anywhere from one hour to three hours a night causing me to have plenty of free
time that could be used more productively.
I am motivated by goals and I feel it is very important to set goals for yourself in every aspect of your
life. I am also motivated by rewards and my personality causes me to want to fulfill all of the potential
possible for me.
My motivation increases when I am being supported by the people around me because then I will not
want to let them down. My parents also motivate me to do my best because they have set a very high
expectation for me, causing me to work for what I want. Yelling and fear of failure both decrease my
motivation. When I am in an environment that I feel comfortable in, my motivation will increase,
however, if I am in a space where I feel judged, I tend to not be motivated.
I have led by example when I tell the truth instead of taking the easy way out, when I take credit for
my actions and not sabotage my teammates. I also lead by example when I listen to and follow
instructions as well as when I am persistent and determined to reach a goal or support my teammates.

Character Foils In Vaclav And Lena
In the novel Vaclav and Lena, Haley Tanner employs the use of many character foils. Characters are
placed into similar roles and the behavior of one character accentuates the traits of another, more
major character. This is particularly prominent among the women who act as Lena s guardians. Two of
the most important women in Lena s life are Radoslava and Rasia. Radoslava Dvorakovskaya is an
elderly woman who Lena lives with when she is very young. Radoslava passes away and Lena moves
in with her aunt. In her new neighborhood, she meets a boy named Vaclav and his mother, Rasia, who
quickly becomes a guardian of Lena as well. Radoslava is a foil for Rasia because while both serve as
maternal figures for Lena, Radoslava s failures as a caring guardian highlight Rasia s devotion and
kindness.
Radoslava s self centeredness calls attention to Rasia s attentiveness. Radoslava s actions make it clear

Radoslava is quick to yell at Lena, saying, Yelena! I am old and I am dying, and you have ruined my
last years of peace (169). Radoslava blames Lena for everything and considers her to be a stain on her
life. Radoslava does not fulfill her role as a kind maternal figure in this case as she makes it very clear
that she does not want to be in this situation. On the other hand, Rasia and her son Vaclav enjoys
helping Lena and consider it a blessing rather than a burden. They are more than willing to meet Lena
and become acquainted with her, both of them knowing that they were doing something nice (68).
Rasia and Vaclav find pleasure in knowing that they are doing a good deed. Unlike Radoslava, Rasia
is unconditionally caring. Radoslava only does things for her own good and the moment things get
difficult she immediately pushes the responsibility onto Lena. The way Radoslava treats Lena serves
as a harsh contrast to the way that Rasia willingly takes on the burden of acting like a mother for

world record for the quickest time with a small block powered car and naturally aspirated car for the

things; his childhood, and the reasons he became such a huge car fan. He was born in Kyabram and
moved to Melbourne when he was 5 years old, where he was raised in St Albans. As cousins we

Sexual Harrasment in the Workplace Essay
Sexual Harrasment in the Workplace Sexual Harassment in the workplace is something so common,
but ironically pushed aside which results in serious legal matter. What is sexual harassment? Sexual
harassment is a form of discrimination that violates Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964. It also
takes the form of unsolicited sexual advances, requests for sexual favors and other verbal or physical
conduct of a sexual nature. Sexual harassment that interferes with an individual s work performance or
creates an intimidating, hostile or offensive work environment results in poor performance and lack of

With diversity in the work force growing so rapidly the differences in the lifestyles and personal ethics
the organization cannot afford to rely on an unwritten policy. The organization must realize that
complaints will be made and it should not be handled lightly. Organizations should periodically update
their policies reflecting the current times and situations. It should be mandatory to implement sexual
harassment polices and brief the employees of such policies.
On the other hand sexual harassment can be blown out of proportion. Some complaints that are made
are not always reasonable. An extensive investigation should be done to make sure that it is legit and
the complaint is not unfair. Perception from the receiver may be distorted from the actual meaning.
Some ways to determine the complaint is really constituted as a complaint are:
1. See if the behavior or act is constructed to be unwelcome, offensive or intimidating.
2. Make sure that there is a trend of the same or numerous complaints being reported.
3. Confirm that there was any implied or expressed sexual favors concerning the job retention,
promotion or any other issues benefiting the organization.
The best way to avoid sexual harassment in the work environment is prevention. Employers are
encouraged to take necessary steps to prevent sexual harassment from

Francisco De Goya Black Paintings
Francisco de Goya s Pinturas negras, or Black Paintings, are some of the most grotesque and
unsettling images in art history, with one painting in particular, Saturno devorando a su hijo, or Saturn
Devouring One of His Sons, standing out the most amongst them all. With his wildly staring eyes,
gaping mouth and half eaten son in his hands, it makes one wonder what would drive an artist to
create an image like this. Goya, however, was not uneducated in the horrors of the world, witnessing
the travesties of the Peninsular War, the atrocities of the Spanish Inquisition, surviving two life
threatening illnesses, with one leaving him completely deaf, and the death of six of his seven children.
Perhaps it was one of these instances in particular that encouraged him to conceiving this
disconcerting figure, or perhaps it was a combination of the three.
At the beginning of Goya s career, in 1777, he was commissioned to create a series of tapestry
cartoons from the Royal Tapestry Factory, designing some 42 patterns over five years. Some of his
more popular paintings were originally tapestry cartoons such as The Parasol. His use of the popular
Rococo style, brought him to the attention of the aristocracy of Spain. In 1789, he was appointed to
court painter to Charles IV and then the following year, he became First Court Painter. His portraits of
the king, queen and royal family, were anything but flattering. While he was given this great position
of influence and prestige, he

Humans Are The World s Greatest Achievements
Bill Bryson states, It s an unnerving thought that we may be the living universe s supreme
achievement and its worst nightmare simultaneously. This could translate to the idea of how humans
are the world s greatest achievement or the world s worst creation. Such as, developing human rights,
achievements in medicine, the building of the Great Pyramid or the Olympics. All of these
achievements were all accomplished humans. Humans being able to achieve the unachievable show
how humans are the most complex creatures in the universe. Being able to do many tasks that other
creatures would not be able to do. While being complex creatures, also leads to humans being the
worst nightmare . Bryson describes humans as being the worst nightmare emphasizing how rotten
humans can be.
Creating the Greatest Achievements Humans are the most advanced creatures on Earth. Our minds and
bodies are more capable of any other creature in this universe. For example, the creation of the
internet has enhanced communication to a whole new level and has allowed us to make use of the
internet, every day of our lives. Also, how people like doctors, soldiers, policemen, even teachers
devote their lives every day to make people feel safe and create an impact on our future. Even
Leonardo de Vinci s Mona Lisa is considered to one of the world s greatest achievements as the
painting is adored by millions. More specific examples would be the man on the moon, the building of
the Great Pyramids, or even the development of vaccinations. The man on the moon is considered to
be a great scientific achievement to put a man in space. This scientific achievement shows how hard
humans were able to work at NASA especially, the engineers and the astronauts themselves to put a
human being on a different planet. Also, the development in scientific discoveries led to the creation
of vaccines. Vaccines are an essential part of health today in helping us protect from serious diseases
and commonly use today. Back then, the life expectancy was short, since humans were not able to
develop such medicine. Doctors and scientists were able to develop these vaccines only show how
they are able to save many lives and create a medicine common in health today.

Plato Was An Ancient Greek Philosopher Essay
Plato was an ancient Greek philosopher thought to have been born in 428 B.C, he was the son of
Ariston and was brought up in an aristocratic way of life. Because of his social status and connections
he obtained through his family, it was thought he would inevitably end up involved in Athenian
political life, but this did not happen to such an extent, a friend of his, Socrates had an enormous effect
on him and why he did not end up with a prominent role in politics. He explains this in his Seventh
Letter, and tells of after the revolution, the government put in charge, being friends and family of his,
called on him to join them. He believed they would turn their unjust city just however, this was not the
case and in Plato s words I saw that these men make the former constitution seem like a golden age by
comparison This new power sought to involve Socrates in their unholy expeditions, irrespective of
whether or not he wished it, this lead to Socrates putting himself and his life at risk when he refused to
be a part of their injustice. This is when Plato removed himself with disgust at the evils being done,
not long after he withdrew the thirty were overthrown and Plato hesitantly re joined in public affairs
and politics until once again, Socrates was called on and this time he was accused of the most unholy
act of impiety and sentenced to death. With this, Plato almost grew a resentment for all constitution

enough until the seller knew she had no better alternative outside the one I was able to offer. Also, I
learned that although it may seem a lot better to maintain cordiality and an atmosphere of trust during
the negotiation, at some point, when it is not going anywhere, it might be better to adopt a stronger
position. Mainly, it had to be used to show the other party that even if an agreement is profitable for
both parties, there is a point of no return, that it is time to really start looking for other solutions, more
creative ones. After having established my position over the seller, making new propositions was a lot
easier. Also, she had realized that not reaching an agreement with me meant that she could not pursue

The Construction Of The Parthenon In Athens, Greece
The Parthenon is located in Athens,Greece. It was constructed approximately in 447 BC and
completed around 432 BC as a temple dedicated to the Goddess Athena., which the original one was
destroyed in Persian Invasion of 480 BC. The Parthenon was used primarily as a treasury. In the sixth
century AD, it was converted into a Christian church, dedicated to the Virgin Mary. During the
Ottoman conquest it became a Mosque which was around 1460 s. The Parthenon was partially
destroyed in 1687.
The architects were Iktinos and Kallikrates with a mention of Vitruv and dedicated to the Goddess
Athena Pallas or Parthenos (virgin). It s main function was to house the statues of Athena which were
made of gold and ivory by Phedias. The inner chamber was unusually large so it could house the

as it fit perfectly in what I wanted to tailor within myself as a future manager. These are my learnings
and how I wish to reform myself. Our first class focused on Forming Teams and Introductions It
started in a very friendly manner and through an introductory exercise, every individual had to talk
spontaneously about their positive qualities and how each of us could benefit from the other and bring
the same to the team. For me the question, what each individual could add to the team really stood out
because everyone had something unique to say about themselves and I will certainly use it in the
future while forming teams. Later, we had a small team exercise of making 15 paper airplane and this
exercise taught us the Forming part of the team model that is how to adapt quickly in a new team, help
each other and come up with a solution. During this entire process one team member was asked to
observe without giving any inputs. This technique deemed simple and creative as I felt it

The Negative Effects Of Social Media And Its Effects On...
In the last twenty years, a phenomenon known as social media has become popular, and with this
phenomenon, people have started to be able to communicate and share their lives with others all over
the world with ease, and this has brought the world together in a unique way. However, all good things
have problems, and a multitude of problems have come from becoming addicted to using social
media. In Fanni Bányai s article Problematic Social Media Use: Results from a Large Scale Nationally
Representative Adolescent Sample, she says, Negative outcomes triggered by the excessive use of
social media may have a detrimental effect on the personal, social, and/ or professional lives of the
users. and I agree because it is easy to see the impact of social media overuse in the society of todays
world. Social media is a fantastic thing that allows people to stay in touch with distant friends and
family to share experiences, but social media also can become addictive and destroy face to face
friendships, but these problems are fixed by planning time to use social media, and not posting
everything an individual does. The invention of social media has made it possible for friends that meet
while traveling, or the family that has people all over, or even the family that all lives in the same
neighborhood, to stay in touch and share their daily experiences with each other. Social Media has
made it possible for a woman in Greeneville, TN, to talk to and write messages to her

The Development Of Human Development Essay
Human Development in Children aged 11years
Human development refers to the biological and psychological development in the human being
throughout the lifespan. It consists of the development from infancy, childhood and adolescence to
adulthood.
In this essay I will analyse two practiced based experiences to demonstrate my understanding of
human development. For my first practiced based experience, I will be drawing on Lev Vygotsky s
Sociocultural Development Theory. His key concepts of The Zone of Proximal Development, More
Knowledgeable Others, and Internalisation.
For my second practiced based experience I will draw on Erik Erikson s Theory of Identity
Development. His key concept of psychosocial development stages.
My first experience concerns an 11year old girl named Ella.
I was sitting in the library with Ella after she had completed her E asTTle testing. While we were
waiting to head back to the classroom Ella was completing a math s project. She explained to me that
she was in a higher learning level math s group and was completing a math s badge. Mrs. Jones head
of math s for year 7/8 is assisting Ella with her math s badge and told me that Ella is doing extremely
well.
My second experience was observing a group of 5 girls that had gone outside to practice their
presentation of an Anzac day story to be delivered before their peers. When one of the girls proceeded
to deliver her part of the presentation, Katy another of the girls in the group sidled up to her,

Ad Hoc Methods
Catching Criminals of the Past: The ad hoc methods of the 1800s and how Alphonse advanced
forensic science Introduction the ad hoc Methods of the 1800s The word ad hoc refers something
formed, arranged, or done for a particular purpose only. When the ad hoc is used to refer to methods of
increasing numbers of captured criminals, it refers to what was done to catch these criminals (ad hoc).
The 1800s were a dangerous time for Americans. The central form of government in America was
mostly in the east as many people began to move west to California because of the gold rush. There
was not much protection for people outside of local law enforcement. Also the law enforcement back
in that day did not communicate if they did it was very limited. ... Show more content on

Local law enforcement was having little to not success in stopping them. A year later Doolin took
control after most of the Daltons was killed in a raid on two banks in Coffeyville. A sting of heist
followed for the newly consolidated Doolin. Doolin and his gang were quite good at alluding capture.
In fall of 1893, marshals finally closed in on the Wild Bunch when they learned that the Bunch was
using the town of Ingalls as a hideout between raids. The afternoon of September 1, 1892, the gang
was found inside George Ransom s saloon. The lawmen moving in for the arrests were headed by
Deputy Marshal John Hixon, who bought four other deputies with him Lafe Shadley, Tim Hueston,
Dick Speed and Jim Masterson. The show down started when Hueston was fired upon and dove for
cover. Doolin shot and killed Speed as the deputy tried in vain to join Shadley, who was concealed
behind the body of a horse. Then Shadley saw one of the outlaws fall wounded, he moved in but
Dalton shot him in his tracks. Masterson later threw dynamite into the outlaws hiding place and
captured Jones one of the members of the Wild Bunch, but the others fled southeast out of town
(Government). The escaping outlaws halted at the top of a nearby ridge long enough to fire some final
shots at the lawmen, and one of those bullets killed Frank Briggs, an innocent bystander. This pretty

Essay on Who Controls Macbeth s Mind
You may think that MacBeth is one hundred percent guilty and should receive a heavy punishment for
his actions. But, have you ever considered the possibility that he may not have been responsible for
them? Because he should not be held responsible for something he had no control over. I would like to
point out that it was the Weird Sisters who told him prophesies which he then believed. It was his
wife, Lady MacBeth, who pressured and convinced him to go through with the killings. And tell me,
would any sane person commit the amount of crimes that MacBeth has? He has a mental condition
that makes him go insane and start seeing things that are not actually there. These hallucinations are
just one of the many causes that contribute to his ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
When Lady MacBeth receives the letter from MacBeth telling her that he wants to kill Duncan, she
fears that he would not have the courage to go through with it (Shakespeare 31). She brings out the
worst in him and encourages him to kill King Duncan. She persuades him by constantly telling him
negative things to get MacBeth to believe that he is doing the right thing. Look like th innocent flower,
but be the serpent under t (Shakespeare 35). Lady MacBeth is the one who tells MacBeth to be this
vicious creature and makes him think that killing King Duncan is okay. Because of Lady Macbeth s
behavior, MacBeth was led to become a murderer. Macbeth should not be held accountable for his
actions since Lady MacBeth is the one who convinced him to commit the crime that started his
madness and turn him into a monster. And now, because the Weird Sisters told him prophesies and
Lady MacBeth turned MacBeth into a savage, he has become mentally ill. His insanity starts even
before he kills King Duncan. While on his way to murder the King, he is convinced he sees a bloody
dagger leading him up to Duncan s room (Shakespeare 51). Obviously, there could not be a dagger
hanging in front of him and actually move by itself. This hallucination is just one example of how
insane he is, and this is even before he killed anyone. And MacBeth s insanity only gets worse at the
feast. At the feast, MacBeth is convinced that he sees Banquo s

Suffering And Morality In The Plague By Albert Camus
Two central themes to understanding the human condition are suffering and morality. Humans
contrive morality to be a set of values deemed right or wrong in a society, and are often defined by
institutions. These guidelines shape the way people live and how they react to life s circumstances.
Suffering is one emotion crucial to the understanding of existence. In a time of pain, an individual
often seeks direction from a higher power, like the church. Institutions such as religion are a way of
expressing morality and a means to cope with suffering, a crucial understanding of the human
condition. In The Plague by Albert Camus, his construction of the human condition is centered on the
catastrophic plague in the town of Oran. Dr. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Morality provides answers and comfort during suffering, and institutions are one vessel through which
it is available. Religious institutions are integrated into the human condition as they provide guidelines
on how to live. Father Paneloux represents the institution of the church throughout the novel and
reverberates themes of Christianity. In his second sermon to the people of Oran, he feels states we
must believe everything or deny everything. And who among you...would dare to deny everything?
forcing the people to make a decision about their religious views (Camus, 224). The institution, in this
case, the Christian church, gives direction to Paneloux by forcing him to hold steadfast to Christianity.
His principles guide him through his pain and help him process powerful emotions that would
otherwise be too agonizing. He must hold onto faith in order to survive this tragic event.
Suffering shapes morality through the way an individual responds to a situation. Dr. Bernard Rieux s
reaction to the death of a child differs from those of Father Paneloux because of their views on
morality. While Rieux is concerned with a man s health; and for [him] his health comes first Planeloux
is working for a man s salvation (Camus, 219). So, as Rieux lashes out the priest, he is expressing his
suffering in an earthly manner, knowing the final pain in the human condition. Rieux sees the agony of
people on a daily basis,

La Mission Movie Analysis
Symbolic Representations One of the symbolic representations in La Mission is where it takes place,
in the mission district of San Francisco. It represents the traditional stance of Che the main character
and compares it to the shift to a more hipster neighborhood with new people like Lena moving in who
haven t been in the neighborhood until recently. He also restores old cars into low riders which is
historically Mexican American style of car. The music featured in this movie is a mix of traditional
chorales, native drums and guitars mixed with newer more modern version that also show the
transition that this community and culture are facing coming to terms with change and homosexuality
that is culturally unacceptable. On the other hand, the movie Walkout shows a symbolic representation
in the movie in the form of the main character s father who has a traditional blue collar job and
represents the barrier that many Chicano s faced at that time. Another is the school teacher Sal who
really has risen above and escaped the life most Chicano s are facing. This comparison is mirrored in
the way some students like Paula are encouraged to attend college while others are told to go into a
low paying trade.
Arguments
From my perspective it s the judgement of homosexuality that is portrayed in the movie. Riddled
throughout the movie is drugs, other deities and violence. Even the main character Che is an alcoholic
bully who s been to prison. How they wrap their heads around these

Squeezed Persimmons By Yiyun Li
Randy Benoit
ENGL 122H 02 (Dorrill)
Assignment 1: Li Essay
Draft 1, 3 March 2015
Squeezed Persimmon The short story Persimmons was written by Yiyun Li. Li was born in 1972 in
Beijing and moved to the United States in 1996 to go to college. She originally studied immunology at
the University of Iowa, but after taking a writing course she started writing fiction. She earned her
master of fine arts in 2005 with a focus on fiction (Yiyun). Persimmons is a short story told by a group
of older men sitting around a tree. They are in the middle of a drought, so their crops and animals are
dying, and they are left with nothing to do. They tell the story of Lao Da, the protagonist of the story.
After his son was murdered, Lao Da planned revenge ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The term Lao Da means the boss or the leader of the group ( Lao ). The narrators show their respect to
Lao Da by calling him Lao Da and treating him as their leader, even though he is a murderer. The
reason as to why these soft persimmons resort to violence is because the county officials treat the
lower class people, such as farmers, like shit. These soft persimmons are eventually squeezed too hard
and can t take it anymore. If the people of the town were treated fairly, they would not have to resort
to such violence that Lao Da resorted to. Before Lao Da took revenge, he tried as much as he possibly
could to seek justice for what happened to his son. He tried multiple riots with his fellows, but the
county seats just pushed him aside and treated him as if he was a dog. After that he decided to wait
until New Year s Eve, when everyone would be at their own house to individually murder the
seventeen county officials, starting with the one who murdered his son. The narrators seem to believe
that the county officials Squeezed him enough for fun, and that they Squeezed a murder out of it (Li
182). Lao Da is not only a soft persimmon, but also a heroic

The Pros And Cons Of The Holocaust
Holocaust prisoners left, together, in cold dark water for hours at a time. Were their punishments for
nothing? Or did their suffering somehow help us today? Between the years of 1939 and 1945, also
known as the Holocaust; the Nazi s took test subjects from groups of people to perform procedures
and experiments on. Unfortunately, all of these so called important tests were exceptionally inhumane.
A few examples of the procedures performed were leaving prisoners in freezing cold water for three
hours straight or only allowing them to drink pure ocean water for two weeks straight. For the most
part, what those German doctors did was unnecessary due to the fact that the outcome was highly
predictable. But over the course of the intense studies, a few valid and useful tidbits of information did
surface. Some of the research findings from Nazi medical testings during the Holocaust continue to
benefit today s modern medical development. One of the many human experiments that the Nazi s
performed on Holocaust prisoners was the cold water experiment. Prisoners were immersed into tanks
of ice water for hours at a time, (Cohen, et. al). The purpose of this at the time was to find out how
long German pilots could survive in the North Sea if their plane was to be shot down (Cohen, et. al).
Unfortunately, many of the prisoners died as result of being left in for an absurd amount of time
(likely close to three hours). However, the information that was recorded from this specific

  • 2. Concise Diction In Hills Like White Elephants By Ernest... In Hills Like White Elephants, Ernest Hemingway uses controlled concise diction to develop a tension filled tone, which characterizes the woman as a pushover to the man, revealing how society gives in to lust, blinding them from the love they desire. Through the precise use of diction between the woman ( jig ) and the man, Hemingway reveals how a lack of knowing someone can lead to emotional dismay. Concise diction in a relationship means, conversation only scratches the surface and the two lovers don t truly know about the other person s emotions. The story is full of short, one line phrases of conversation between the couple about trivial things. They converse about the lovely hills and the simple operation, yet they never ask each other about their feelings. The lack of in depth communication of opinions creates a tension filled atmosphere that just keeps building up and up as the story continues. The simple operation, an abortion, is seen by the couple as the issue they need to resolve, however, the man, who can t handle the responsibility, instead of talking it through with his lover chooses to manipulate her. He tries to convince jig, who is easily pushed over as she is stuck by lust and will do anything to keep the relationship together. She doesn t care to sacrifice her happiness for his, rather she fears that if she doesn t go through with the operation, he will leave her, she is indecisive and relies on the man to make many decisions. The man deceives ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Advertising has become a way of life. The average American is exposed to 3,000 advertisements a day. These advertisements come from the television, radio, news papers, billboard signs, and countless other ways. The advertisers use different ways of attracting a consumer to buy their product. One of the strategies that the author will use is called appeals, which uses ethos (ethics), pathos (feelings), and logos (logic). Some people believe it is and will continue to destroy life and moral values in our nation. The rhetorical triangle is used very well in advertising; in some cases it is hard to catch the imbedded message. The ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The kids do not see before and after pictures of people who have smoked for years in the magazines or commercials. The youth also think they will not get addicted. I also believe that by the time most people are the age twenty they have decided whether or not they are going to smoke or not. Kids see attractive people in movies and commercials smoking, or cartoon animals smoking and they think it is cool. If a product, like cigarettes, will make kids feel like they fit in, then they will do it even if the product will hurt them. This kind of audience, the youth, is very vulnerable because they will do anything to get accepted by people. The author for the audience of chewing tobacco is targeting young blue collar men ages eighteen to around thirty. The ads are targeting the young men who work outside or like doing out door activities. In this Copenhagen ad the quote next to the rider says I never walk when I can ride. And I never ride without my cope. The ad has a younger man on a horse taking a dip and two other riders trying to catch up to him on the open range. • 5. Great Art Will Be A Transparent Reflection Of Society Great art will always be a transparent reflection of the society in which it was produced. The greatest artists are able to blend cultures and practices into a single work, creating an aesthetic dialogue that challenges viewers to look at the piece with multiple perspectives and creates the opportunity for continuous discovery upon subsequent visits. On the first floor of the new Broad Museum, in Downtown Los Angeles, there is a piece of art executed by the prolific Japanese artist, Takashi Murakami, which does just this. In a room that is solely dedicated to the work of Murakami, there is a piece that seems to stand out more than the rest. Through the use of his famous superflat technique , Murakami removes all texture and physical depth from the painting creating a body of work that feels seamlessly absent of human involvement. There is no physical trace of texture or brush stroke, the paint has the appearance of being printed onto the canvas. Additionally, through this technique, Murakami is able to compress characteristics of digital design, high and low arts, pop culture, and historical culture all into one piece. As one begins to analyze what is taking place on the canvas, this becomes more evident. As one walks around the first floor gallery and gazes at this work by Murakami which spans two walls wrapping from one wall, through the corner, to the next wall one will see images of anime, skulls, fish, boats, geishas and more. The entire stretch of the nearly eighty two foot long canvas seems to be awash in the enormous waves of a tsunami. These waves and the rest of the characters on the canvas are composed of a selection of radiant acrylics, which fill the rendered pictures on the canvas with a psychedelic palette of colors. Within each wave, various historical references can found. Most notably, a color pattern alluding to Katsushika Kokusai s famous painting, The Great Wave off Kanagawa, is used to fill in several strips of waves that ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

A young, African American, fourteen year old boy, Emmett Louis Bobo Till, was murdered in Money, Mississippi after flirting with a white woman ( Emmett Till , 2014). Emmett Till s story brought attention to the racism still prevalent in the south in 1955, even after attempts nationwide to desegregate and become equal. Emmett s harsh murder and unfair trial brought light into the darkness and inequality that dominated the south during the civil rights movement. This change in environment and lifestyle in the northern city of Chicago allowed Emmett Till to interact with white men and women regularly and primarily freely. Desegregation became familiar to Emmett, and he became comfortable to speak more freely than he had in his earlier years, regardless of race. ( Emmett Till , 2014) In 1955 Emmett planned to visit family in Money, Mississippi ( The death of , n.d.). The trip was scheduled for August 20th and Emmett was going to stay with his great uncle Moses Wright ( The death of , n.d.). As J. • 9. Comparing The Song Of Creation And The Babylonian Creation... Creation Myth Paper In this creation myth paper, one can will be comparing The Song of Creation from the Rig Veda on page 15 in Fiero s The Humanistic Tradition, Book 1, with The Babylonian Creation myth on page 19 to 20 in Fiero s The Humanistic Tradition, Book 1. The Song of Creation from the Rig Veda on page 15 originates from India. Meanwhile The Babylonian Creation myth on page 19 to 20 originated from Babylon. The main differences between these two creation myths is that the first creation myth is based on the importance of water as the necessary requirement for the beginning of life. For example, in the Rig Veda, the creation of the world was stated to come from a watery darkness (Fiero 15). Meanwhile the second myth is more ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The primary source narrates about how back then before the universe was created, there was no existence, no death or immortality (Fiero 15). It also raises questions about the creation of the universe such as What covered it? Where was it? In whose keeping? (Fiero 15). These shows the uncertainty of how the universe came to be. Meanwhile in The Babylonian Creation myth, it narrates or tells the story about not only how the universe was created, but also how the gods entered the world, how the earth came to be, as well as the creation of Babylon and humans (Fiero 19). In the first myth, the universe was created when That One which came to be enclosed in nothing, arose at last, born of the power of heat (Fiero 15). In my opinion, one canthink that back in the time, the people who created this myth believed in a geocentric view of the universe where Earth was in the center. And that that One came to be the sun which gave light to the world and allowed the prospering of plants and life. Some imagery found in this primary source were darkness wrapped in darkness , only illumined water cosmic waters, in depths unfathomed, (Fiero 15). These forms of imagery depicts or describes what the universe was like before the that One arose. The order of creation in this myth seems to be that of the One being in the empty universe before anything else and then when that One arose, he or she brought heat as well as light in the world which most likely led to the beginning of light in the world leading to life. In this creation myth, one can feel like the One is the universe or the creation because according to lines 23, it states The gods themselves are later than creation (Fiero 15). So one can feel like the universe created the gods not the other way around. In the text, life began with the arrival ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 10. The Similarities Between Classical Music and Ellington s... One of the greatest tragedies in the 20th century can be seen in the debasing of the Jazz genre as a unworthy equal to it s predecessor, European Classical music. This can be seen in various statements about Jazz, such as Boris Gibalin commit, The Jazz Mania has taken on the character of a lingering illness and must be cured by means of forceful intervention. 1 This conflict can be traced through out the history of Jazz, as Classical composers have relatively disregarded this new type of music. Before Duke Ellington s Cotton Club performances, Jazz play on the radio was delegated for late night audience only. This sub culture treatment has led many critics to disregard the Jazz movement as a dance craze, or unsuccessful ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Complete artistic improvisational is only accomplished by the single performer, but Yet the moment a group or a collective improvisational steps in some relatively simple and more or less inflexible convention becomes essential if mere chaos is to be kept at bay. 3 This is why Duke Ellington s Orchestra played such an integrate role in his development of musical scores. It is here that we see the originality of Duke Ellington, for in his tailoring a piece around the performer, he created the impression of pure interpretations within the framework of structure. As Duke once said, Another theory they hold is that there is such thing as a unadulterated improvisation without any preparation or anticipation. It is my firm belief that there has never been anyone who has blown even two bars worth listening to who didn t have some idea what he was going to play, before he started 4 This is an important aspect to bear in mind for this argument, for the mistake that Classical critics make is this distortion of the improvisational aspect to such extremes that one would believe that no compositional writing takes place. While obviously some improvisation happens in Jazz assembles, it is not that extreme, and in Ellington s case this improvisation of certain musicians was actually written in the piece. Ellington work is centered on the interplay between written and improvised music. 5 As one can see both types of composers utilize their musicians to ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 15. Short Essays in The Great Cat Massacre by Darnton The Great Cat Massacre Although the title of this book strikes the reader as unusual it begins to make complete sense once it is read. This book is a series of short essays by Darnton. The second section, which is titled Workers Revolt: The great Cat Massacre of the Rue Saint Sérverin brings the reader directly into the views of the working class during the 1700s in France. This style of writing allows situations to be viewed through the lens of those who are experiencing it, making for a more interesting read. The context of this portion of the book truly gives an in depth account of the emotions and conditions that peasants would meet with while being treated as inferior to even the animals by the masters. It can be said that Darnton included this portion of the book to show the customs of the French during this time as well as to be able to see the way that the working class lived. From the reading the working class was the base of society, doing the work for the noblemen and everyday citizens. In this section it involves a particular situation with two men that are apprentices in a noble house. Apprentices would learn their way into a position of a trade and gain their success this way. Unfortunately, the apprenticeship program was not the most enjoyable experience. These men were not allowed to sit at a table for meals, they had to sleep in freezing rooms that were dirty and horrid, and were forced to eat the food scraps that even the cats rejected. Essay On Boo Radley During the prejudiced and racially charged era of the 1930 s, attorney Atticus Finch from Maycomb, Alabama finds himself defending an innocent black man falsely charged with rape. Meanwhile, his son, Jem, and daughter, Scout, along with their friend, Dill, find themselves captivated by the rumors plaguing their neighbor, the mysterious and elusive Arthur Boo Radley. It is an undisputed fact Scout, Jem, and Dill persistently plague the Radleys with their childish antics. Some people feel the children should not pursue the Radleys, while others believe the children should pursue the Radleys. The children should pursue the Radleys for three reasons: Boo Radley saves the helpless children, events serve as important lessons, and the children ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... A consistent theme throughout the book is that perspective is everything. Atticus Finch even tells them this by saying, you never really understand a person until you consider things from his point of view . . . until you climb into his skin and walk around in it. As Scout is walking Boo Radley back to his home after the attack, it dawns on her that Boo is not a monster, but simply a man with no desire to interact with the outside world. She realizes that as she went about her everyday life fooling around on the Radley property, walking to school, and playing games, Boo was observing all of this from his own perspective. The events also teach the children innocence is not to be destroyed as Atticus illustrates when he tells Scout and Jem it is a sin to kill a mockingbird, because they do nothing but make pretty music for everyone to enjoy. Out of fear of tarnishing his own reputation, Bob Ewell forces his daughter to falsely accuse a black man of raping her. The man was innocent, yet the jury convicts him as guilty and sentences him to execution. As if that were not enough, Bob Ewell tries to kill Scout and Jem, two innocent kids, merely because their father defended the innocent black man in court. Boo s innocence becomes evident to Scout the moment the identity of their rescuer is revealed as Boo, himself. She finally identifies Boo Radley as the mockingbird he always ... A shadow s form is entirely dependent on the person creating the shadow, and its light source; it can move, shrink, stretch, and stay still, based off of those movements made by its creator and the respective position of the light. But what is a shadow that does not have a creator, or person, blocking the light beams from reaching the desired surface? And how does one s perception of a shadow change when viewing a shadow of this type? It will be focusing on understanding the knowledge of cultural diversity and why it s important. I will also discuss the different attitude that nurses are expose to from different culture. As reference I will be using the Journal continuing Education in Nursing ; (L. Price, July 1994). According to L. Price cultural diversity challenges health care providers to facilitate bridging cross cultural gaps with clients. He believes that it is through culturally relevant care that nurses can serve the needs of all clients in our diverse society. Mr. Price also stated that nurses can use the following steps to have a better connection with patients that have a different background from them. The four steps include the following; (1) health care providers should assess their own cultural beliefs and be aware of general ethnic, regional, and religious beliefs and practices in their area; (2) develop a teaching plan; (3) implement the plan. Those are the three topics that I will be discussing in the following pages. As a uncertificated nurse I strongly believe that it is very crucial for me and my peers to understand culture and its function in human behavior and society. Reflection Paper On Volleyball Player This Club season, I would like to improve my knowledge of the sport, understand how to be a supportive teammate, and develop into a better and more experienced volleyball player. The position I enjoy the most is the outside hitter. I am fond of this position because I am not only a skilled and talented hitter, but I am also useful in backrow. Therefore, an outside hitter is my desired position because I believe this is where I would be the most useful to the team. I would absolutely consider playing another position because I desire to support my team in anyway the coaches see fit. A position I am not willing to play is right side hitter because in a previous club season, I was placed in that position and I did not get much playing time and I felt as though I was not benefitting my team in any way. Also, I enjoy passing in the backrow and the position of right side hitter is only a front row position. My grade point average is a 98.75. My grades currently range from a 97 100%. School is a very big aspect of my life and my goal is to continue to move forward in my studies. On average, I study anywhere from one hour to three hours a night causing me to have plenty of free time that could be used more productively. I am motivated by goals and I feel it is very important to set goals for yourself in every aspect of your life. I am also motivated by rewards and my personality causes me to want to fulfill all of the potential possible for me. My motivation increases when I am being supported by the people around me because then I will not want to let them down. When I am in an environment that I feel comfortable in, my motivation will increase, however, if I am in a space where I feel judged, I tend to not be motivated. I have led by example when I tell the truth instead of taking the easy way out, when I take credit for my actions and not sabotage my teammates. Radoslava Dvorakovskaya is an elderly woman who Lena lives with when she is very young. Radoslava passes away and Lena moves in with her aunt. In her new neighborhood, she meets a boy named Vaclav and his mother, Rasia, who quickly becomes a guardian of Lena as well. Francisco De Goya Black Paintings Francisco de Goya s Pinturas negras, or Black Paintings, are some of the most grotesque and unsettling images in art history, with one painting in particular, Saturno devorando a su hijo, or Saturn Devouring One of His Sons, standing out the most amongst them all. With his wildly staring eyes, gaping mouth and half eaten son in his hands, it makes one wonder what would drive an artist to create an image like this. Goya, however, was not uneducated in the horrors of the world, witnessing the travesties of the Peninsular War, the atrocities of the Spanish Inquisition, surviving two life threatening illnesses, with one leaving him completely deaf, and the death of six of his seven children. Perhaps it was one of these instances in particular that encouraged him to conceiving this disconcerting figure, or perhaps it was a combination of the three. At the beginning of Goya s career, in 1777, he was commissioned to create a series of tapestry cartoons from the Royal Tapestry Factory, designing some 42 patterns over five years. Some of his more popular paintings were originally tapestry cartoons such as The Parasol. His use of the popular Rococo style, brought him to the attention of the aristocracy of Spain. This could translate to the idea of how humans are the world s greatest achievement or the world s worst creation. Such as, developing human rights, achievements in medicine, the building of the Great Pyramid or the Olympics. All of these achievements were all accomplished humans. Humans being able to achieve the unachievable show how humans are the most complex creatures in the universe. Being able to do many tasks that other creatures would not be able to do. While being complex creatures, also leads to humans being the worst nightmare . Bryson describes humans as being the worst nightmare emphasizing how rotten humans can be. Creating the Greatest Achievements Humans are the most advanced creatures on Earth. Our minds and bodies are more capable of any other creature in this universe. For example, the creation of the internet has enhanced communication to a whole new level and has allowed us to make use of the internet, every day of our lives. Also, how people like doctors, soldiers, policemen, even teachers devote their lives every day to make people feel safe and create an impact on our future. Even Leonardo de Vinci s Mona Lisa is considered to one of the world s greatest achievements as the painting is adored by millions. More specific examples would be the man on the moon, the building of the Great Pyramids, or even the development of vaccinations. This scientific achievement shows how hard humans were able to work at NASA especially, the engineers and the astronauts themselves to put a human being on a different planet. Also, the development in scientific discoveries led to the creation of vaccines. Vaccines are an essential part of health today in helping us protect from serious diseases and commonly use today. All the loads of laundry that I folded, light bulbs that I changed, and dinners that I made have helped me become someone who is self reliant, independent, always willing to help, and one pasta making ... When Helen was asked if she could have more gatherings Helen would reply, but I simply can t do it. Even now, I am so exhausted just from having everyone here that I ve got to lie down for a little while (Goodwin 122). • 38. Reflection On Managing A Team In the past I have worked for some really good managers and some not so good ones, however, what I realized is that while they may have done the basic requirements to manage the people under them, they did not do so efficiently and effectively. This is something that pricked me and then I realised that I needed to learn and overcome this shortcoming and manage my team in a more effective and efficient way. When this course was offered for the first time in our program it grabbed my attention as it fit perfectly in what I wanted to tailor within myself as a future manager. These are my learnings and how I wish to reform myself. Our first class focused on Forming Teams and Introductions It started in a very friendly manner and through an introductory exercise, every individual had to talk spontaneously about their positive qualities and how each of us could benefit from the other and bring the same to the team. For me the question, what each individual could add to the team really stood out because everyone had something unique to say about themselves and I will certainly use it in the future while forming teams. Later, we had a small team exercise of making 15 paper airplane and this exercise taught us the Forming part of the team model that is how to adapt quickly in a new team, help each other and come up with a solution. During this entire process one team member was asked to observe without giving any inputs. This technique deemed simple and creative as I felt it ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

In the last twenty years, a phenomenon known as social media has become popular, and with this phenomenon, people have started to be able to communicate and share their lives with others all over the world with ease, and this has brought the world together in a unique way. However, all good things have problems, and a multitude of problems have come from becoming addicted to using social media. Social media is a fantastic thing that allows people to stay in touch with distant friends and family to share experiences, but social media also can become addictive and destroy face to face friendships, but these problems are fixed by planning time to use social media, and not posting everything an individual does. The invention of social media has made it possible for friends that meet while traveling, or the family that has people all over, or even the family that all lives in the same neighborhood, to stay in touch and share their daily experiences with each other. • 40. The Development Of Human Development Essay Human Development in Children aged 11years Human development refers to the biological and psychological development in the human being throughout the lifespan. It consists of the development from infancy, childhood and adolescence to adulthood. In this essay I will analyse two practiced based experiences to demonstrate my understanding of human development. For my first practiced based experience, I will be drawing on Lev Vygotsky s Sociocultural Development Theory. His key concepts of The Zone of Proximal Development, More Knowledgeable Others, and Internalisation. For my second practiced based experience I will draw on Erik Erikson s Theory of Identity Development. His key concept of psychosocial development stages. My first experience concerns an 11year old girl named Ella. I was sitting in the library with Ella after she had completed her E asTTle testing. While we were waiting to head back to the classroom Ella was completing a math s project. She explained to me that she was in a higher learning level math s group and was completing a math s badge. Mrs. Jones head of math s for year 7/8 is assisting Ella with her math s badge and told me that Ella is doing extremely well. My second experience was observing a group of 5 girls that had gone outside to practice their presentation of an Anzac day story to be delivered before their peers. When one of the girls proceeded to deliver her part of the presentation, Katy another of the girls in the group sidled up to her, ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

In fall of 1893, marshals finally closed in on the Wild Bunch when they learned that the Bunch was using the town of Ingalls as a hideout between raids. The afternoon of September 1, 1892, the gang was found inside George Ransom s saloon. The lawmen moving in for the arrests were headed by Deputy Marshal John Hixon, who bought four other deputies with him Lafe Shadley, Tim Hueston, Dick Speed and Jim Masterson. The show down started when Hueston was fired upon and dove for cover. Doolin shot and killed Speed as the deputy tried in vain to join Shadley, who was concealed behind the body of a horse. Then Shadley saw one of the outlaws fall wounded, he moved in but Dalton shot him in his tracks. Masterson later threw dynamite into the outlaws hiding place and captured Jones one of the members of the Wild Bunch, but the others fled southeast out of town (Government). The escaping outlaws halted at the top of a nearby ridge long enough to fire some final shots at the lawmen, and one of those bullets killed Frank Briggs, an innocent bystander. This pretty much ... But, have you ever considered the possibility that he may not have been responsible for them? Because he should not be held responsible for something he had no control over. I would like to point out that it was the Weird Sisters who told him prophesies which he then believed. It was his wife, Lady MacBeth, who pressured and convinced him to go through with the killings. She brings out the worst in him and encourages him to kill King Duncan. She persuades him by constantly telling him negative things to get MacBeth to believe that he is doing the right thing. Look like th innocent flower, but be the serpent under t (Shakespeare 35). Lady MacBeth is the one who tells MacBeth to be this vicious creature and makes him think that killing King Duncan is okay. Because of Lady Macbeth s behavior, MacBeth was led to become a murderer. Macbeth should not be held accountable for his actions since Lady MacBeth is the one who convinced him to commit the crime that started his madness and turn him into a monster. And now, because the Weird Sisters told him prophesies and Lady MacBeth turned MacBeth into a savage, he has become mentally ill. His insanity starts even before he kills King Duncan. While on his way to murder the King, he is convinced he sees a bloody dagger leading him up to Duncan s room (Shakespeare 51). Obviously, there could not be a dagger hanging in front of him and actually move by itself. This hallucination is just one example of how insane he is, and this is even before he killed anyone. • 43. Suffering And Morality In The Plague By Albert Camus Two central themes to understanding the human condition are suffering and morality. Humans contrive morality to be a set of values deemed right or wrong in a society, and are often defined by institutions. These guidelines shape the way people live and how they react to life s circumstances. Suffering is one emotion crucial to the understanding of existence. In a time of pain, an individual often seeks direction from a higher power, like the church. Institutions such as religion are a way of expressing morality and a means to cope with suffering, a crucial understanding of the human condition. Morality provides answers and comfort during suffering, and institutions are one vessel through which it is available. Religious institutions are integrated into the human condition as they provide guidelines on how to live. Father Paneloux represents the institution of the church throughout the novel and reverberates themes of Christianity. In his second sermon to the people of Oran, he feels states we must believe everything or deny everything. And who among you...would dare to deny everything? forcing the people to make a decision about their religious views (Camus, 224). The institution, in this case, the Christian church, gives direction to Paneloux by forcing him to hold steadfast to Christianity. His principles guide him through his pain and help him process powerful emotions that would otherwise be too agonizing. He must hold onto faith in order to survive this tragic event. Suffering shapes morality through the way an individual responds to a situation. Dr. Bernard Rieux s reaction to the death of a child differs from those of Father Paneloux because of their views on morality. While Rieux is concerned with a man s health; and for [him] his health comes first Planeloux is working for a man s salvation (Camus, 219). So, as Rieux lashes out the priest, he is expressing his suffering in an earthly manner, knowing the final pain in the human condition. Rieux sees the agony of people on a daily basis, ... • 44. La Mission Movie Analysis Symbolic Representations One of the symbolic representations in La Mission is where it takes place, in the mission district of San Francisco. It represents the traditional stance of Che the main character and compares it to the shift to a more hipster neighborhood with new people like Lena moving in who haven t been in the neighborhood until recently. He also restores old cars into low riders which is historically Mexican American style of car. The music featured in this movie is a mix of traditional chorales, native drums and guitars mixed with newer more modern version that also show the transition that this community and culture are facing coming to terms with change and homosexuality that is culturally unacceptable. On the other hand, the movie Walkout shows a symbolic representation in the movie in the form of the main character s father who has a traditional blue collar job and represents the barrier that many Chicano s faced at that time. Another is the school teacher Sal who really has risen above and escaped the life most Chicano s are facing. This comparison is mirrored in the way some students like Paula are encouraged to attend college while others are told to go into a low paying trade. Arguments From my perspective it s the judgement of homosexuality that is portrayed in the movie. Riddled throughout the movie is drugs, other deities and violence. These soft persimmons are eventually squeezed too hard and can t take it anymore. If the people of the town were treated fairly, they would not have to resort to such violence that Lao Da resorted to. Before Lao Da took revenge, he tried as much as he possibly could to seek justice for what happened to his son. He tried multiple riots with his fellows, but the county seats just pushed him aside and treated him as if he was a dog. After that he decided to wait until New Year s Eve, when everyone would be at their own house to individually murder the seventeen county officials, starting with the one who murdered his son. • 46. The Pros And Cons Of The Holocaust Holocaust prisoners left, together, in cold dark water for hours at a time. Were their punishments for nothing? Or did their suffering somehow help us today? Between the years of 1939 and 1945, also known as the Holocaust; the Nazi s took test subjects from groups of people to perform procedures and experiments on. Unfortunately, all of these so called important tests were exceptionally inhumane. A few examples of the procedures performed were leaving prisoners in freezing cold water for three hours straight or only allowing them to drink pure ocean water for two weeks straight. For the most part, what those German doctors did was unnecessary due to the fact that the outcome was highly predictable. But over the course of the intense studies, a few valid and useful tidbits of information did surface. Some of the research findings from Nazi medical testings during the Holocaust continue to benefit today s modern medical development. One of the many human experiments that the Nazi s performed on Holocaust prisoners was the cold water experiment. Prisoners were immersed into tanks of ice water for hours at a time, (Cohen, et. al). The purpose of this at the time was to find out how long German pilots could survive in the North Sea if their plane was to be shot down (Cohen, et. al). Unfortunately, many of the prisoners died as result of being left in for an absurd amount of time (likely close to three hours). However, the information that was recorded from this specific ...
