Mental illness can affect the individual s relationships, their work, and their quality of life. Having a
mental illness is difficult, not only for the person concerned, but also for their family and friends.
Mental disorders can affect anyone of any age.
Reflect
Reflect on the way you currently think about mental illness . How is a mentally ill person different to
a, mentally well, person?
What are mental health and mental illness ?
Mental illness is very common. According to MIND (2009), a mental health charity, about one in four
people in Britain will receive this diagnosis at some point in their life. At any one time up to one in six
people have a mental health problem (Department for Health, 2011). Despite this, there is a great deal
of controversy about what mental illness is, what causes it, and how people can be helped to recover
from it. People who are experiencing mental or emotional distress are often very reluctant to see their
experiences as mental illness and

The Life and Work of John Calvin and Galileo Galilei Essay
John Calvin was born July 10th, 1509, in Noyon, Picardy. He was raised up in a staunch Roman
Catholic family. Early in his life, Calvin s father was employed by the local bishop as an administrator
at the town s cathedral. With this newly acquired job, John Calvin s father wanted Calvin to be a
priest. Due to the fact that his family had close ties with the bishop and his noble family, Calvin s
classmates in Noyon were aristocratic and culturally influential in his childhood. At the age of
fourteen, Calvin set off for Paris to study at the College de Marche. This helped him prepare for
university study. At the College de Marche, he studied seven subjects: grammar, rhetoric, logic,
arithmetic, geometry, astronomy, and music. Towards the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
A year later, Calvin ran away from Paris. Reason being, his friends wrote papers and gave lectures
opposing the Roman Catholic Church, which frightened Calvin. For the next three or so years, John
Calvin lived in several places outside of France. This included him using a dozen or so names;
changing it from place to place he traveled. He traveled alone, studying by himself, preaching, and
beginning work on the Institutes of the Christian Religion, which turned out to be an instant best
seller. By 1536, he had stopped work in the Roman Catholic Church, and made plans to leave France
for good. He planned on leaving France and heading over to Strasbourg. However, due to the war
between Francis I and Charles V, Calvin decided to make a detour to Geneva. Calvin was a huge
success in Geneva. Farel, a reformer, invited him to stay in Geneva. Farel also threatened Calvin s life
with God s anger if he chose not to stay. After deciding to stay in Geneva, thus began a long
relationship with the city. Due to theological conflicts, Calvin was asked to leave the city, where he
began as a lecturer and preacher. In 1538, he left the city of Geneva, and headed off for Strasbourg. In
1541, Calvin, who was now working as a pastor to French refugees, was requested to come back to
Geneva by the Council of Geneva. So, in 1541, Calvin returned to Geneva. He remained in Geneva
until his death on May 27th, 1564. Those last several years were plentiful with lecturing,

Analysis Of As Good As It Gets
The film As Good As It Gets, reflects on the psychopathologies of three main characters. Marvin
Udall is an obsessive compulsive writer who maintains poor boundaries with those who encounter
him. Simon Bishop is a homosexual artist who struggles with post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD)
about his estranged relationship with his parents and following an attack in his home. Carol Connelly
is a waitress who suffers from anxiety, due to her son having an extreme case of asthma causing him
to have constant medical attention. These random characters lives intersect in such a way, that in the
end they become their greatest support network. Marvin Udall displays typical behaviors that many
functioning obsessive compulsives have in common. Mr. Udall has obsessions which are, persistent
thoughts, urges that are experienced as intrusive and unwanted, whereas compulsions are repetitive
behaviors or mental acts that an individual feels driven to perform in response to an obsession
(American Psychiatric Association., 2013). Very early in the film we see Mr. Udall struggles with
contamination related obsessions and participates in ritualistic activities which serve to lessen his
obsessional anxiety. We see him engage in hand washing rituals with extremely hot water and several
bars of soap which is only intrusive to him, to later in the film where he must take a shower before
dinner and has the character Carol waiting on him for what seemed like hours. Mr. Udall has a ritual to
eat at a certain restaurant everyday for breakfast, where he also must bring his own plastic silverware
for fear of germs.
Mr. Udall shows his compulsive traits by feeling the need to lock his apartment door three times, turns
the lights on and off five times and cannot step on cracks or lines in the flooring or street. These
repetitive behaviors are normally not intrusive to others, but Mr. Udall does involve others in his
compulsion when he is trying not to step on the cracks in the sidewalk. We do not know the exact
rationale behind his compulsions, but many people fear that something bad will happen if they do not
engage in their compulsion.
What is interesting about Mr. Udall is how he did not perceive his quality of life to be

Between Wonder, Imagination And Space In A Midsummer s...
In A Midsummer s Night Dream, Shakespeare tells us a poet s task is to transform things unknown to
shapes that give to airy nothing a local habitation and a name, suggesting a defined context ( local
habitation ) and words ( a name ) (5.1.65). Without a named place we live in a chaotic world.
Likewise, without the development of language from a pool of amorphous sensations in our brain we
cannot begin to approach creativity. Words and how they are used become tools to chisel meaning
from undefined emotion. This process of making creative order out of chaos begins with the child s
sense of wonder and curiosity. The relationship between wonder, imagination and space is a complex
one, even a poetic one. We begin life in a pre verbal paradisiacal state. With the acquisition of
language comes a separation akin to the fall, resulting in melancholy and a desire to return to this
preverbal bliss. Through a close examination of Alice in Wonderland and Through the Looking Glass
we can explore universal grammatical structures, using linguistic techniques and other literary devices
to show these connections and how they inspire wonder in children.
II. Exposition: The Wondrous Landscape A. Definition of Wonder and Imagination
But how do we define wonder and how is it related to imagination ? Moreover what have these two
concepts to do with language and ultimately the power to inspire children to be creative? The Oxford
English Dictionary uses words like astonishment,

Roman Empire Vs Germanic Society Essay
While both Roman society and Germanic society do not view slaves as full people each society does
have some safeguards to slaves wellbeing. Although both societies try to protect their slaves they also
illustrated that slaves were not equal to free and even freed slaves were not equal. While both societies
have positive aspects to their treatment of slaves I believe it would be better to be a slave in a
Germanic society rather than a Roman society. In a Germanic society a slave had a greater ability to
marry, slaves also had the ability to pay fines for wrong doing rather than receive physical punishment
and in Germanic law codes there was more of a focus on petty crime committed by slaves rather than
in Roman codes where there was a ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Roman law does not recognize the ability of a slave to marry. Any physical relations with a slave in
Roman law, even if consensual were not permitted, nor were family relationships among slaves
recognized by law (Civilizations 111). The inability of slaves to enjoy the normalcy of relationships
with family members or a partner shows how much more restrictive Roman society was. It also shows
that Romans viewed their slaves as less human than did Germanic people. When slaves were being
punished for crimes such as thievery or other common crimes in Salic areas they could face very harsh
physical punishment, such as lashing and castration if male (Civilizations ). If slaves confessed to their
crimes they, or more likely their owner, would be able to pay a fine, and restore the stolen property, or
value of the property, in order to prevent physical harm as a punishment for their crime. Roman laws
about crimes concerning slaves are about punishment for killing slaves by free people, other than their
owner, or maintaining slaves loyalty to their owners (Civilizations 114). This shows that these were
the problems that the Romans were dealing with and in comparison to the Germanic problems,
murdering slaves was not just a petty crime. Laws concerning crimes committed by or against salves
display that the Roman Empire s problem was not with minor crime but with serious offenses

The Prosecutors Firearm Identification Testimony
The prosecutors firearm identification testimony for the case was poorly executed which allowed
Waite to reexamine the bullets from the case and what he found was the rifling markings did not
match up with the bullets that were test fired from Steielow s gun. They determined that Stielow was
not guilty due to the conclusion that his firearm was not used in the crime. Following this case Waite
was inspired to develop a systematic process for documenting ballistics information to avoid making
mistakes in later cases. After this Waite began to travel to different firearm manufacturers to document
the process of creating the firearms to study the different characteristics in each. As firearm production
began to become more advance and higher quality in the assembly process it opened more ways for
investigators to attack firearm crimes. The range of evidence that can be recovered from a firearm
involved case can be as small as a bullet fragment that holds the rifling markings from the firearm to
the firearm itself. The firearm itself is a highly anticipated form of evidence that investigators will
search for because of the information it can possess. The firearm itself can hold many different forms
of evidence such as the firearm serial number. In 1968 the United States passed the Gun Control Act,
which obligates that all guns manufactured or imported to the USA must obtain a serial number ( Gun
Control Act | ATF , 2016). If the firearm possesses a serial number it will allow

King Narmer s Second Dynasty
On a cultural, economic and political level, Egypt has been largely shaped by the idiosyncrasies of its
various rulers. Egypt s first leap towards becoming an advanced civilisation began with King Narmer
s unification of Upper and Lower Egypt. Although the first 200 years of Egypt s unification do not
appear to have been peaceful, cultural development accelerated ahead during the early dynasties. The
tensions between the North and South throughout Egypt s second dynasty continued to grow until
Khasekhemwy s ascension to the throne. As the last King of the Second Dynasty, he is widely
recognised as the King that resolved the conflict between the two sides, however, how this was
achieved is not known. The beginning of the third dynasty started with his son, Djoser, who now ruled
over a politically stable Egypt. Egyptian society advanced significantly under ... Show more content

The validity of Narmer s pharaonic title is supported by the seal impressions found in the Abydos
tombs which have provided an ancient list of Kings, of which Narmer is recorded as a pharaoh. His
rule was further consolidated by his marriage with Neithhotep, a supposed Lower Egyptian Princess,
as suggested by Sir Flinders Petrie. Egyptian culture has not only benefited from the Unification,
rather the economy as well. Narmer s name has been found outside Egypt, in Syria Palestine which
indicates that some form of contact and active trade was present between Egypt and parts of the
Ancient Near East, and thus creating trade links bettering Egypt s future economic prospects. As a
result of the accelerated cultural development brought upon by Narmer s unification of Upper and
Lower Egypt, handicrafts, mason s skills, architecture, burial customs , writing art, bureaucracy and
politics have improved dramatically. In terms of writing art and iconography, the reign of Narmer
illustrates the transition between old and new systems of royal iconography. On an ivory cylinder in

The early human lived life by hunting, fishing and collecting wild plant, and their life was not
organized. About 5000 years ago, a complex and organized way of life began in some part of the
world. People live together in town, cities and others centers and started farming, industries, and also
started writing, painting and other method of living. Later, there were specialize occupations emerged,
complex religions took form and social diversion increased, and these changes lead to the birth of

civilization, Middle East civilization, Mesopotamian civilization, Egyptian civilization, Greek
civilization, Roman civilization and others which greatly contributed to the development of the world
history. Each civilization had their own way to follow culture, religions, public life, economic life, and
others. Therefore, in this paper, I will describe how Indian civilization, Egyptian civilization and
Greek Civilization made impacts in the way that we see today s world and how these civilizations
affected people s life.
Indian civilization was one of the first civilization in world history. Indian civilization is staged in two
steps: About 2600 BCE is known as Indus Civilization and about 1500 BCE is known as Vedic

Malcolm Gladwell And Dead Poets Society
Everyone has their own interpretation of the word success. Individuals might even have their own
personal explanation of how they came to be successful. However, these personal explanations are
usually incorrect. Malcolm Gladwell, Steve Jobs, and the film, Dead Poets Society have a mutual
understanding of success, making them interconnective. Although success can be interpreted in
various ways, success is attained through hidden advantages, extraordinary opportunities, and
significant intelligence.
Unfortunately, an individual s personal qualities does not explain how they became successful. There
are often hidden advantages acquired in a successful person. Certain aspects about an individual s life
can turn out to be an advantage. In the book Outliers, Malcolm Gladwell describes the system of
Canadian hockey leagues. The elegibility cutoff age for ameatur hockey leagues is on January 1st.

Soraya s Moral Development
Soraya s Moral Development
Soraya Taheri is one of Khaled Hosseini s characters in The Kite Runner, who represents what a true
woman and wife should be like. She is an example of Kohlberg s classification of three levels of moral
development in humans. Even though there is not a lot of information in the novel given about Soraya,
her personality can be reviewed based on her behavior throughout the story.
The reader first meets with Soraya in chapter 11, when she is working at a flea market. Her obedience
to her father General Taheri can be referred to the Pre Conventional Morality, stage 1: Obedience and
Punishment Orientation. Because this stage involves fixed beliefs of a child that hisher authority is

Dressed in a stunning winecolored traditional Afghan dress with long sleeves and gold trimmings. She

Here, Soraya wears traditional Afghan dress and follows the rules accordingly. She sees this as more
than simple deal, since marriage in Afghanistan is an important event. Her good behaviour is visible
during the time she spends with Amir s father when he lies in bed, sick:
Soraya dedicated herself to taking care of my father. She made his toast and tea in the morning, and
helped him in and out of bed. She gave him his pain pills, washed his clothes, read him the
international section of the newspaper every afternoon, She cooked his favourite dish, potato shorwa,
though he could scarcely eat more than a few spoonfuls, and took him out every day for a brief walk
around the block. And when he became bedridden, she turned him on his side every hour so he
wouldn t get a bedsore. (172)
Soraya takes care of Amir s father, even though no one asked her to do this. According to Kohlberg,
person at this stage has good motives and interpersonal feelings, such as love, trust, empathy and
concern for others, which is exactly what Soraya shows in this passage. Another time when this level
is evident is when Soraya tells Amir how she taught an illiterate woman how to read and write:

The natural environment is, of course, not getting its revenge . Geophysical, meteorological, and
hydrologic processes are unfolding as they have for millennia, beginning long before humans
occupied the earth and continuing to the present. Given the eons long perspective of the natural
environment, it would be very difficult to identify meaningful changes in event frequency for the short
time period in which scientific records are available on geological, meteorological, and hydrological
phenomena. Event frequency, from an emergency management perspective, is not really the issue. It is
certainly true that, over the years, more people have been affected by natural disasters and losses are
becoming progressively greater. The significant feature driving these observations, however, is the
extent of human encroachment into hazard prone areas. With increasing population density and
changing land use patterns, more people are exposed to natural hazards and consequently our
accumulated human and economic losses are increasing. Much of this exposure is a matter of choice.
Sometimes people choose hazardous places, building houses on picturesque cliffs, on mountain
slopes, in floodplains, near beautiful volcanoes, or along seismic faults. Sometimes people choose
hazardous building materials that fail under extreme environmental stresses for example, unreinforced
masonry construction in seismically active areas. Some exposure results from constrained choices; the

Sonnet 138 Analysis
The textual differences between the 1599 and 1609 renditions of Shakespeare s Sonnet 138 subtly
change the meaning and shift the focus of the poem. Most notably, in the 1609 rendition, more
emphasis is placed on their shared complicity and Shakespeare more vividly paints his mistress as an
individual opposed to a third party construct. To begin, note the difference in lines 6 8 of both
renditions: Although I know my years be past the best, / I, smiling, credit her false speaking tongue, /
Outfacing faults in love with love s ill rest (1599) versus Although she knows my days are past the
best, / Simply I credit her false speaking tongue: / On both sides thus is simple truth suppressed
(1609). In the 1599 rendition, Shakespeare admits to knowing he is old while in the 1609 rendition,
his mistress is doing the knowing. By changing the pronouns, Shakespeare makes their deceit seem
more mutual because she actively recognizes his age. Obviously, Shakespeare knows he is old what
matters is how much his mistress knows it. Allowing his mistress to do the knowing heightens her
deceit and by extension their mutual duplicity because the text plainly conveys what she is lying
about. Similarly, Shakespeare s complete rework of line 8 in the 1609 rendition further shifts the focus
by candidly admitting that On both sides the ugly truth is being ignored. In the 1599 rendition, there is
a very vague and ineffective attempt at imagery instead due to the words outfacing and the

The Problem Of A Dichotomy Of Civil And Ethnic Nationalism
Not only economic, but also political realities of global process of democratization of the 1990s of the
20th century had impact on development of the political analysis of nationalism, having stabilized a
problem of the analysis of a ratio of civil and ethnic nationalism not so much in general theoretical,

The problem of a dichotomy of civil nationalism (as inherent mainly in countries of Western Europe
and North America) and ethnic nationalism (widespread, according to the standard version, in the
countries of the Central and Eastern Europe) became a subject of scientific discussion.

Brubaker puts forward the provision on prevalence in type of national identity of transit democracies
of Eastern Europe and Eurasia of ethno cultural aspect and lack of necessary conditions for an
interiorization of patterns of civil national identity. R. Brubaker comes to a conclusion that in these
countries, the creation of statehood was preceded by the nationalist movements, and the state was
created in interests of concrete ethno political group. In this regard, the researcher believes, in the new
democratic countries of Eurasia chances of distribution of patterns of civil identity are very small. In
new democracies, there was an institutionalization of the ethno cultural concept of national identity
which is distanced from the idea of civic consciousness and is focused on transfer of social
responsibility to structures of the power.

Teaching Styles For Student Understanding And Creative...
Much like teaching styles adaptability, teachers must accommodate and adapt their teaching to ensure
student understanding and creative thought. Through tactical teaching styles that adapted and fitted the
students, students were able to understand and learn to the best of their abilities when taught by Mrs.
Graham and her colleagues. Needing diverse styles to appeal to them, students need teachers to create
creative and interactive ways to make the lessons seem interesting and relatable in their lives. Even at
the early beginnings of the school day, the Mount Olive Middle School students seemed interested
with majority of the students staying engaged for the entirety of the lesson. They showed their interest
and comfortableness in the classroom by asking questions that related to the topic that interested them
or in some cases, confused them. They were able to express their ideas, and Mrs. Graham would
expand based on what the students answered to explain further the topics of discussion. Due to these
previously established inviting environments, students felt secure and comfortable enough to share
their thoughts inside the different classrooms. During the time in the classes where the students were
able to unleash their creative sides and participate in the class, they really seemed excited to learn
during my observations. Especially during their scary story narratives, the students really responded
well to be able to come up with their own stories and discuss writing

PTSD Among Vietnam Veterans Essay
The majority of Vietnam veterans experienced delayed or chronic PTSD which we know now, can
remain dormant for years until symptoms are triggered. According to the Vietnam Veterans
Readjustment Study, approximately 30.9% of men and 26.9% of women soldiers in Vietnam had
PTSD at some point in their lives. (P8) Lifting these requirements from the DSM III allowed many
more veterans to step forward; and with this new massive population of test subjects scientists were
able to research the dynamics, variables, and patterns of PTSD, through the advancements of
neuroimaging and neuroscience. (P9) There were many more cases of PTSD among Vietnam veterans
than any other war. (P5) A number estimated to be near 500,000. (P11) Plasmodium falciparum ...

Consider the clips in relation to constructivist and socio cultural approaches to learning. How do they

The first clear example was Morgan (McWilliams, 2011), she displayed a perfect example of the Zone

Eliot s Argument For Moral Judgement
In order to fully understand Eliot s statement, it would be helpful to locate the statement in Eliot s
essay and then speculate its meaning within its context. Right before the quoted passage, Eliot writes,
if were agreed as to what we meant by wisdom, by the good life for the individual and for society, we
should apply moral judgements to poetry as confidently as did Johnson (Eliot 212). It seems Eliot
implies that Johnson is confident about his moral judgement because there is a consensus in society on
what is right and what is wrong. Consequently, when Johnson reads a text, it is relatively easy for him
to judge the morality of this work, whereas Eliot s time is an age in which no two writers need agree
about anything (Eliot 212). For this reason, Eliot laments that readers in his age must endeavor to
discount [the] attraction or repulsion of the ideas, as well as the personality of the author (Eliot 212).
Yet in Johnson s age, the relatively homogenous value system, Eliot believes, frees Johnson from the
struggle to dissociate the work from the author s idea. Johnson can simply disregard the author and
weighs the text against the commonly accepted value, as Eliot says, what interests Johnson is the
edifying power of the poem, rather than the deliberate intention of the poet (Eliot, 212). In other
words, Eliot portrays Johnson as an disinterested critic who is only interested in how a text reflects the
commonly accepted morality. In this sense, Johnson is able

Detrimental Effects of Beauty Pageants
There is an ongoing debate on the detrimental effects that beauty pageants can have on their
contestants. Judged solely on physical beauty, beauty pageants have been around for quite some time.
The first pageant, the Miss America pageant, was held in 1921. Miss Universe and Miss USA soon
followed, and by the 1960 s beauty pageants were part of American culture. Viewed as a positive and
potentially rewarding competition, pageants have now recently had a drastic turn of view. Advocates
of beauty pageants put forth that beauty contests develop self esteem and confidence (Ending the
Hypersexualization of Girls). However, beauty pageants can be a highly destructive concept that can
put too much pressure on its contestants to look perfect, put parents in a financial crisis, and quite
frankly, be simply unhealthy. As well as participation in beauty pageants, there is a rage of them on
television as well. Television images and broadcasts have had a huge impact on it s participants and
the type of messages they internalize about what is normal . (Could Child Beauty Pageants Be Banned
in the USA?). Children, as well as teens, view what they see on television as what they must become.
Beauty pageants are very undermining to the participants emotional health, the pressure to look
perfect, and it s countless negative effects they possess. The long standing opinion in the
psychological community about beauty pageants is that they are not in the best interest of the

Into The Charge Of The Light Brigade Essay
The depictive lines of Alfred Lord Tennyson s poem Into the Valley of Death/Rode the six hundred...
Cannon to the right of them/ Cannon to the left of them The Charge of the Light Brigade has long held
its place in the public imagination. According to Denis Cummings, it is a symbol of heroic failure, a
Victorian icon of sacrifice and devotion to duty. The poem itself is a modified and dramatic depiction
of what the war was like. The poem, The Charge of the Light Brigade revises the real horrors of the
war by rendering it into more dramatic, motivational, and personal events.
Although the article, The Battle of Balaclava, by William Howard Russell and the poem, The Charge
of the Light Brigade by Alfred Lord Tennyson tell about ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
But thanks to that, readers can experience the war as if they were a part of it. The first line was broken
it was joined by the second, they never halted or checked their speed an instant. (89) Standing in the
middle of hundreds of horses racing at 30 mph is pretty ghastly. Getting struck by one of those horses
can end your life, but these soldiers raced to protect their country and to defeat their opponent. Not
only does vocabulary affect the dramaticism of the story, it gives a lifelike experience of what the war
was like. The effect of personalization can change how the story is accepted and understood. The
article could have just said that there were dead bodies, but it states, The plain was strewed with their
bodies and with carcasses of horses. (89)
Poetry typically delivers events more deeply and memorably than the original. The Charge of the
Light Brigade renders the horrors by making it more dramatic, patriotic, and personal. Conceivably,
The Charge of the Light Brigade does not emphasize and thoroughly describe the original story. But,
both the poem and the article emphasize that these 600 soldiers will always be remembered.
Nevertheless, the poem s rhythm and conveyance will have a long lasting and heartfelt effect in reader

Teen sexting violates an adolescent s privacy and ruins their reputation which in turn affects their

Darl Bundren In As I Lay Dying Essay
Darl Bundren, arguably the leading character in William Faulkner s As I Lay Dying, is the voice of 19
of the 55 chapters of the work, significantly more than any other single character. Over the course of
the novel, Darl experiences a descent into madness, illustrated by Faulkner with a stream of
consciousness narrative. This style of writing is the rawest form that a character can exist in, and the
most distinct from the author. As Faulkner has made clear through Addie Bundren, Darl s recently
deceased mother, language is important. In context, this means that Faulkner s use of language should
not be overlooked when analyzing any aspect of his writing. That being said, by examining the exact
grammar, Faulkner clearly outlines Darl s disintegrating sanity using his internal dialog.
In the opening chapters of the novel, Darl s voice is observant and as objective as possible; however,
by his final chapter, Darl shows signs of personality dissociation, and thinks of himself as two separate
entities: a character and a narrator. Ironically, the separate storytellers in As I Lay Dying bar the
possibility of a narrator in the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

participate in philosophical musings seems inaccurate to him as a person on a basic level, this actually
contributes to fleshing him out as a character. Style and language are key to the understanding of this
novel; a novel about language and experience, in which a dead woman comes right out to say how

Extent Of Identity Theft In Australia
Extent of Identity Theft
Identity theft is a type of fraud, it is the deliberate use of someone else s identity. Most commonly to
gain money or obtain credit and other benefits in the victim s name. The victim whose identity has
been stolen may suffer consequences such as being held responsible for the offender s actions. Identity
theft occurs when someone uses someone else s identifying information (such as their name, credit

Identity crime is one of the most common crimes committed in Australia. Surveys suggest that
approximately 4 5% of Australians experience financial loss due to Identity crime per year. Identity

Essay On Hunger In America
Hunger: a feeling of discomfort or weakness caused by lack of food, coupled with the desire to eat.
About 795 million people in the world do not have enough food to live a healthy life. When we think
of hunger, most of us tend to think of third world countries or places on the other side of the world.
Although there is a lot of hunger in those places, there is also a lot of hunger in our country and in our
own town. There are multiple factors that contribute to hunger, one of which is food waste. In 2010,
thirty one percent of the available food supply in America went uneaten or wasted. Every year, a
minimum of 1.3 billion pounds of food goes unused. Not only does the unused food sit in landfills, but
when it rots, it produces greenhouse gasses that speed up global warming. Unemployment is also one
of the bigger factors in the problem of hunger. Most people commonly associate poverty with hunger.
But sadly, in America, unemployment and hunger also go hand in hand. When a person is unable to
earn money, they are then unable to buy food, he or she has a higher chance of going hungry. With
little money it is harder to find or buy food. Anybody, no matter how old or young they are can be
affected by hunger. Babies, children, adults and senior citizens can all go hungry at some point in their

The Slave Crucible Analysis
The Slave Crucibles and A Federal Assault provide different perspectives on the experiences of slaves.
The Slave Crucibles contributes personal insight into the different aspects of the lives of slaves while
A Federal Assault exhibits a generalized viewpoint on the effects of laws such as the Fugitive Slave
Act of 1850 on the majority of the slave population. Both pieces of literature demonstrate the
injustices and demeaning treatment towards African Americans during the 19th century. Pargas The

However, fictive kin and these new established relationships on shared experiences did not completely
extinguish the feelings of longing for loved ones or diminish the oppression faced by these people.
Reunion with family members was one of the major motives for interstate migrants to escape but
sometimes it proved to be more difficult than expected because migrants came from longer distances.
Therefore, when attempts to escape were made they were more permanent and ...fugitives were not
intending to visit loved ones but rather escape their new destinations for good... (Pargas 243). These
feelings of depression and isolation, removal from loved ones, and demeaning treatment incited many
slaves to escape. Escaping was never easy and there were laws set in place to punish those who tried
to do so. These laws, specifically the Fugitive Slave Act of 1850, and their effects are closely
examined in Horton s article, A Federal Assault.
Horton provides a more generalized approach and the use of anecdotes is present but is not as intense
as in The Slave Crucibles. Horton presents the actions taken by the government and the states in order
to deal with fugitives. He examines the impact of the Fugitive Slave Act of 1850 on the general slave
population and the people associated with it. Information is also presented on what was done in order
to combat the Fugitive Slave Act and allow African Americans to experience the freedom that they

To rule, a ruler needs control. It is the cornerstone of any society with a leader. The society Ayn Rand
creates in Anthem is no exception. In Anthem, the rules in the society depicted by Rand exist for
control, and were initially created for equality but spiraled out of control into a world built on
collectivism and backward teachings. The society Prometheus, or Equality, envisions in the final
chapters of the novella would never have any of the rules in his past society, as he realizes through his

Anthem through giving up freedom for the sake of equality. A high school teacher mailed Rand her

WW1 began on 28th July 1914 ending in 11th November 1918, originating in Europe after the
assassination of the Archduke Franz Ferdinand and his wife Sophie. The war was fought on a number
of fronts including the Western Front, Middle East, Europe, Africa and Gallipoli. As the war
progressed, WW1 became known as The Great War , the war to end all wars. A short period of time
after Britain and Germany went to war, Australia was included into the fighting as at the time
Australia was still a colony to the British. Australia prepared for war months before, enlisting soldiers
for all types of military forces, these included, the naval, expeditionary, Imperial force, ANZAC,
infantry, artillery, flying corps, transport ships and the Light horse Units. ... Show more content on

Overall the horse would carry 130 150 kg of belongings. This was all given to recruit after being
accepted into the Light Horse Brigade. This also included being accepted into a four men section. We
are all concentrated in sections. A section is four men. A section lives together, eats together, sleeps
together, fights together, and when a shell lands on it, dies together. A full troop of men has eight
sections. There are four troops to a squadron, three squadrons to a regiment. I m not going further than
the regiment. Our big world is the regiment and even then most of us don t know intimately the men
out of our own squadron. Our life is just concentrated in the section . We growl together, we swear
together, we take one another s blasted horses to water, we conspire against the damned troop sergeant
together, we growl against the war and we damn the officers up hill and down dale together; we do
every thing together in fact, this whole blasted war is being fought in

South Island Is A Beautiful Place
South Padre Island All adults have lives that are filled with some form of stress, even if we don t truly
accept the fact. School and work can get really stressful and we often start to feel anxiety about
meeting deadlines or pivotal determinations. Everyone can enjoy a vacation from time to time, and for
many people the beach signifies relaxation and a great stress free environment. Touring places or
doing activities with your family is a great way to forget about work and make great memories. South

While fishing on the bay side, also has an amazing view of the island and the long elevated bridge.
Another great activity South Padre Island offers is horse back riding on the beach which offers
different times of the day you can choose. Horseback riding is fun but what makes it more amazing is
you can enjoy it while being on the beach. It is really a great time to enjoy with your family and just
ride along the beach hearing the sound of the ocean. One of my other favorite activities that I love to
visit every summer when we have the whole family down is Schlitterbahn Waterpark. It has amazing
rides for the family to enjoy and cool down on a hot summer day. They recently opened an indoor pool
which is really cool just in case you want a take a break from the hot sunny day. South Padre Island
also has many tours you can enjoy with your family. Theirs charters that take a couple of groups
around the bay and they already know what spots has more dolphins. We took my nieces and nephews
to the Dolphin Watch a couple of summers ago and they had an amazing time. Seeing their little faces
overjoyed when they would see the dolphins coming up out of the water and making a show for us
made me really happy. At one point so many dolphins were making a great show that we took a
picture of the whole family and in the background some dolphins were captured. It was beautiful and I
m glad we were able to take pictures with the dolphins we can have memories to cherish. Sea

Transcendentalism In Dead Poets Society
Transcendentalism is a literary movement in the 1830s that suggest that every individual is capable
discovering higher truth through intuition. Transcendentalist live by 5 tenets which are the importance
of nature, self reliance, simplicity, self trust/confidence, and nonconformity. The movie Dead Poets
Society is about a teacher who teaches his group of students how to live transcendental. The movie
shows great acts of transcendentalism through each of the characters using the different tenets. Mr.
Keating and Knox Overstreet in dead poets society shows that living transcentally is worth the
consequences. Mr. Keating s actions of nonconformity in the movie Dead Poets Society benefitted his
character in many ways. Mr.Keating was the poetry teacher of a group of boys who used to be in Dead
Poets Society who chose to live transcentally. In his class he encouraged the boys to do whatever they
want to do, to believe in themselves, and not follow the crowd. He told them to seize the day no matter
what and just like Thoreau you should [l]ive each season as it passes; breathe the air, drink the drink,
taste the fruit, and resign yourself to the influences of each (Thoreau). As you live each day you
should live it as simply as possible and live each like it was your last. Each of the boys in the Dead
Poets Society benefited from living tanscentally with the help from Mr.Keating. One of the boys got
the girl of his dreams and another got the confidence to stand up for

My Summer Vacation
My Summer in Chicago
I couldn t help but to feel anxious and excited. It was my first time being in such a vast city and I
couldn t wait to explore it. The time was near the end of July, this is when my dad usually enjoys
taking our summer vacations, primarily outside of our state to somewhere else new and exciting. That
summer my dad decided to take a week long road trip and visit, Wisconsin Dells, Chicago, St. Louis,
and Madison. My dad said he wanted to show my sisters and I all the adventures he did in Chicago
when he was my age. I had felt joyful about the trip, I could not wait to see all the buildings and walk
down the Navy Pier. To tell the truth, I was more excited to visit Chicago a little more since it was
such an extensive city and I had wanted to visit there ever since I was younger.
A few days before the trip, my dad, my sister Nina, and I, had done some research and added up the
cost of the trip and looked for hotels and restaurants to visit during the time we were there and on our
road trip. After about an hour of research on Chicago, we had our plan of what to do for our time in
Chicago. That night, It was difficult to fall asleep, although I wasn t surprised I usually didn t fall
asleep right away before a vacation, I m usually too excited.
Morning soon came and my dad, my younger sister Niomi, my sister Nina, and I were all ready to
leave and finally begin the drive to Chicago. Not to mention, it would be about six hours to arrive
there. Finally, after

Compensation Philosophy Paper
Compensation Philosophy
It most likely goes without saying that people who work for a living do so in order to get paid.
Everyone has bills and living expenses that need to be paid; therefore, individuals exchange our time
for a paycheck so these expenses can be addressed. However, since most people spend more time at
work than they do with their families, there should to be a larger reason than pay that drives each of us
to get up every morning to go to a job. It is the responsibility of the organization to provide its
employees with that reason, and it comes in the form of a compensation philosophy. It is the intention
of this paper to explain the need and rationale for an organization to have a compensation philosophy,

Compensation in these organizations has many faces. Employee compensation may look quite a bit
different that that of the executives, and certainly different from that of the stockholders/shareholders
of the organization. The following is a proposal of how a compensation philosophy might look for a
Fortune 500 Company:
Compensation Philosophy
It is the key compensation goal of this organization to offer compensation in such a manner as to
encourage innovation, creativity, camaraderie, and shareholder value in order to attract and retain the
highest quality employees available in the industry. Our compensation program is to be based upon
the following five components:
1. As a Fortune 500 Company, our compensation is designed not only to attract and retain high
performing corporate professionals, but also to ensure the package is designed with shareholder
interests as the basis of its existence.
2. Our compensation package will be equal to or better than any compensation offering by our
strongest competitor no matter which market we

My Personal Experiences Of Basketball And Basketball
My history with sport started at a young age; by three years old, my father already had me swinging a
baseball bat. Yet, for me personally, the earliest memories I have of sports were watching my older
brother play basketball on the hoop in our front yard. Before I knew it, I was out on the basketball
court at 5, playing in games with my father, brother and neighbors. At 6 when I first started
kindergarten, my parents signed me for a winter YMCA basketball league where I began to shine.
Being one of the few kids on the team that could dribble the ball and actually take shots, I played the
point guard position and was constantly given the ball. Seeing my success in the basketball league, my
parents wanted me to play little league next, with the hope that it would be as successful as basketball.
Evidently, my parent s intuition about my athletic ability was correct. In little league, I was one of the
few kids who could throw the ball across the diamond. Naturally, as I was one of the few kids that
could field, I was relegated to second base and occasionally shortstop. While I may have felt that I was
one of the best hitters on the team at the time, reflection on my past reminds me that I always had
trouble with swinging the bat. Much to my parent s dismay, baseball was not the same as basketball
for me; I was unable to dominate without any resistance. Yet, not all hope was lost. As a pitcher, I
showed great promise. Even though I was not the tallest kid or the strongest kid, I

Latin American Private Equity And Venture Capital Industry
Brazil is set to host the Olympic games next year with interest and excitement building on the streets
of Rio. But at the same time, the Brazilian economy is faced with some massive challenges. Brazilian
asset prices are plummeting, but analysts are calling for value investors to seek opportunities in the
sector and perhaps help the economy get back on track.
In fact, the recent research by the Latin American Private Equity Venture Capital Association
(LAVCA) shows, the first part of the year has witnessed increase in fundraising, investment and exits.
The economic slowdown is providing opportunities, as heavily depreciating local currencies are
looking lucrative.
The Latin American Industry Outlook
The LAVCA data shows the region saw its fundraising increase by 21% in the first half of 2015. Latin
American private equity and venture capital firms raised an aggregate $4.27 billion. The first half of
the year witnessed the strongest fundraising since 2011. In 2011, a slightly higher $4.9 billion was
raised during the first half.
It was the pan regionally focused firms, which accounted for nearly 35% of the total capital raised.
This was nearly three times more than these funds raised during the first half of 2014. In addition, the
latest Preqin data shows that domestic managers have controlled the fundraising scene with nearly
86% of fundraising arriving from domestic funds.
Despite the strong fundraising effort at the start of the year, LAVCA s analysts predict

Metamorphosis And The Stranger
The existence and purpose of human live has always posed a question for society. To answer this
question, philosophers ponder Existentialism. Existentialism is the philosophy that humans exist for
no true purpose and that each individual changes essence in his or her lifetime by finding meaning in
life through freewill, choice, and personal responsibility without certain knowledge of right and
wrong. This theory gained popularity in the mid 1900s after WWII caused many people to lose hope
in an ordered world and accept that no cosmic justice exists. According to this theory, no absolute
rules govern humans lives. This theory appears throughout literature and offers a grim perspective on
human existence. The Metamorphosis, written by ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In addition, Meursault cannot find a solid place in society. He lives alone due to the death of his
mother. Society cannot accept the manner in which Meursault addresses his mother s death. Since he
thinks that Maman died today. Or yesterday maybe, [he doesn t] know (Camus 3), society believes
that he does not care that his mother dies. Everyone judges him because he does not relate to the rest
of the people. Meursault receives immense criticism at his trial concerning his murdering another
man. At his trial, Meursault can feel how much all these people [the jury] hated (Camus 90) him. The
jury does not commend him or even regard him with understanding about his mother s death. Some
people react to death without actually reacting to it; Meursault subconsciously chooses to do so but
receives condemnation. Both characters experience isolation from society.
The characters also think illogically without true reasoning. When Gregor transforms into a large
beetle, his first thought is not how to fix his situation. Rather, he thinks to himself, How about if I
sleep a little bit longer and forget all this nonsense (Kafka 7). He does not search for a solution or ask
for help but finds sleeping an appropriate response. Later, he continues by concluding that his bug
state is a result of getting up early all the time (Kafka 7) because it makes you stupid (Kafka 7). While
not sleeping enough surely does cause people to become tired and the

Analysis Of A Dead Man s Pockets, And Ambush
1234Literary Analysis Collection 1 Are you ready to analyze three stories? Yes? Awesome! No? Too
bad, because here we go! The three stories in question are The Leap, The Contents of a Dead Man s
Pockets, and Ambush. The authors of these stories use aspects of their stories to shape the plot, show
the theme, and to change the views of the characters in the stories. The first literary element used in
the stories to form the plot, was the setting. In the story Ambush, the narrator is crouching in bushes
alongside a dirt path that is shrouded in fog and mist. The narrator remarks when telling this story that,
The mosquitoes were fierce. I remember slapping at them, wondering if I should wake up Kiowa and
ask for some repellent, then ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The boat that the characters are in, is small and causes a lot of tension between the characters. Like the
other passengers, Murad looks on, stunned. They expected to be taken all the way to the shore, where
they could easily disperse and then hide. The idea of having to swim the rest of the way is intolerable,
especially for those who are not natives of Tangier and accustomed to its waters... Someone makes an
abrupt movement to reason with Rahal, to force him to go all the way to shore, but the Zodiac loses
balance and then it s too late. This tension causes the boat to eventually flip, which changes the
outcome of the story and plot. In these three stories, the authors use the setting of the story to shape
and alter the plot in multiple ways. The writers also used the conflicts of the stories to further the plot
and to change the character s opinions and views. The conflict of Ambush, the narrator throwing a
grenade at an unknown man, resulted in the narrator changing the way he acted in the future. Even
now I haven t finished sorting it out. Sometimes I forgive myself, other times I don t. In the ordinary
hours of life I try not to dwell on it, but now and then, when I m reading a newspaper or just sitting
alone in a room, I ll look up and see the young man coming out of the morning fog. The conflict of the
story continues to impact the narrator s life, even many years after it happened. In Contents of a Dead
Man s Pockets, the protagonist is changed

The Innovators Dna
The Innovators DNA
Innovation usually discusses the altering or generating more effective developments, products and
ideas, and can rise the possibility of a business get to the top. Businesses that innovate produce more
effective work methods and have better output and performance. Innovation can be a promoter for the
progression and success of your business, and help you adjust and grow in the marketplace. Being
innovative does not mean inventing; innovation can mean changing your business model and adapting
to changes in your environment to deliver better products or services. Successful innovation should be
an in built part of your business strategy, where you create a culture of innovation and lead the way in
innovative thinking and creative problem solving.
To enhance your ability to innovate and act creatively, use the same five discovery skills that compose
the DNA of disruptive innovators : associating, questioning, observing, networking and
experimenting. Associating that is, connecting ideas from disparate arenas is the most important; the
other four skills trigger associational thinking and support creativity, which lead to innovative
business ideas. Every innovator employs a different blend of these skills:
Innovators combine elements of various ideas and practices that other people don t put together. They
draw connections that cross boundaries, linking concepts from one discipline or culture with those
from another. Albert Einstein called this

John Jackson D-Day Essay
A long time ago in 1942 when the nations of the world have once again for the second time engaged in
a world war. Men were once again sent to war and had to leave their families to fight a war for
whatever country or nation they came from. Some men were paratroopers that were flown in by plane.
However, some men did not always have safe travels to their destinations and were often separated
from their squad if they even managed to fall safely to the ground and survive the barrage of gunfire
from the enemies below. There were some American paratroopers that ran into these problems when
they were dropped into D day. One of them was named John Jackson. John Jackson was on one of the

John had 3 kids with her that he had watched by his parents while he went off to war. His main
objective now is to not end up like his other squad mates and die at the hands of the germans. The
desire became stronger as he stared at the bodies of his dead squad mates. The blood flowing out like a
river. The cold dead look on their faces. The men find an abandoned house to try and radio call for
help. As they were trying to make the call they heard men speaking in german again. The voices were
near by. John went to look out the window and counted ten men armed with rifles and submachine
guns. The three men froze upon seeing the sight of the angry germans. John s mind turned blank and
he was unable to think of a plan to get the three of them out of this if they were discovered by the
germans. But just then an M2 Sherman tank came mowing down any trees that came in its path and
shot down the germans with machine gun fire. Tears of joy stream down John s face at the sight of
seeing a friendly tank with a bright yellow sun behind it. The nightmare was over and the darkness
from the night has fallen. The three men have survived and are fortunate enough to return home to
their families. John will get to see his kids once again in a happy and safe

The Initiation Of Initiation Prayer
initiation prayer. Eithne intoned prayers as she cleaned Lutren s arms, legs, and face with the
traditional wash of heather and rosemary. She dried him off, then painted his face and neck with blue
woad. And you, Lutren, promise to be a fair and fierce warrior? she asked, solemnly. Eithne was
treating this as a true initiation and Taran loved her for it. I promise. And do you accept these men to
be your warrior brothers, and to serve and protect the king and kingdom as best you re able? Slowly,
Lutren emerged from his bed and stood up tall. I will. Lutren swayed, and Eithne must have

Taran chuckled. Perhaps women would be part of the warrior clan one day. Taran left Veerah for last,
because the thought of taking a knife to her skin made his heart race. Even though she gave her blood
freely and willingly, he was uncomfortable with cutting her. But what was he to do, refuse? He
swallowed and made a small cut, but it was too shallow, so it did not bleed. Taran cursed under his
breath and Veerah chuckled. Sire, it ll all right. She looked at him with reassurance in her eyes, so
Taran focused, made a short, clean swipe with the blade against her lower arm, and she bled. Lutren
was the first to drink the blood, then passed the bowl on. All drank, and the only part left to finish the
ceremony was for Lutren to receive a blow and deal a blow. Lutren, are you able to stand again? With
difficulty, Lutren rose, but lifted his chin with pride. Taran had already decided he would not hold
back when he struck Lutren; to do so would shame the boy. Certainly, Taran wouldn t hit him as hard
as one of the men, but he d deliver a solid blow, one that would leave a nice mark. Taran and Lutren
were close; it is what the boy wanted. Thus, Taran pulled back his fist, and punched Lutren in the jaw,
hard enough that the boy s head snapped to the side, but Lutren did not fall. Tori gasped and buried her
face in Veerah s shoulder, but the men nodded in approval. They understood. Taran did not ask Lutren

  • 3. The Life and Work of John Calvin and Galileo Galilei Essay John Calvin was born July 10th, 1509, in Noyon, Picardy. He was raised up in a staunch Roman Catholic family. Early in his life, Calvin s father was employed by the local bishop as an administrator at the town s cathedral. With this newly acquired job, John Calvin s father wanted Calvin to be a priest. Due to the fact that his family had close ties with the bishop and his noble family, Calvin s classmates in Noyon were aristocratic and culturally influential in his childhood. At the age of fourteen, Calvin set off for Paris to study at the College de Marche. This helped him prepare for university study. At the College de Marche, he studied seven subjects: grammar, rhetoric, logic, arithmetic, geometry, astronomy, and music. Towards the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... A year later, Calvin ran away from Paris. Reason being, his friends wrote papers and gave lectures opposing the Roman Catholic Church, which frightened Calvin. For the next three or so years, John Calvin lived in several places outside of France. This included him using a dozen or so names; changing it from place to place he traveled. He traveled alone, studying by himself, preaching, and beginning work on the Institutes of the Christian Religion, which turned out to be an instant best seller. By 1536, he had stopped work in the Roman Catholic Church, and made plans to leave France for good. He planned on leaving France and heading over to Strasbourg. However, due to the war between Francis I and Charles V, Calvin decided to make a detour to Geneva. Calvin was a huge success in Geneva. Farel, a reformer, invited him to stay in Geneva. Farel also threatened Calvin s life with God s anger if he chose not to stay. After deciding to stay in Geneva, thus began a long relationship with the city. Due to theological conflicts, Calvin was asked to leave the city, where he began as a lecturer and preacher. In 1538, he left the city of Geneva, and headed off for Strasbourg. In 1541, Calvin, who was now working as a pastor to French refugees, was requested to come back to Geneva by the Council of Geneva. So, in 1541, Calvin returned to Geneva. He remained in Geneva until his death on May 27th, 1564. Those last several years were plentiful with lecturing, ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 4. Analysis Of As Good As It Gets The film As Good As It Gets, reflects on the psychopathologies of three main characters. Marvin Udall is an obsessive compulsive writer who maintains poor boundaries with those who encounter him. Simon Bishop is a homosexual artist who struggles with post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) about his estranged relationship with his parents and following an attack in his home. Carol Connelly is a waitress who suffers from anxiety, due to her son having an extreme case of asthma causing him to have constant medical attention. These random characters lives intersect in such a way, that in the end they become their greatest support network. Marvin Udall displays typical behaviors that many functioning obsessive compulsives have in common. Mr. Udall has obsessions which are, persistent thoughts, urges that are experienced as intrusive and unwanted, whereas compulsions are repetitive behaviors or mental acts that an individual feels driven to perform in response to an obsession (American Psychiatric Association., 2013). Very early in the film we see Mr. Udall struggles with contamination related obsessions and participates in ritualistic activities which serve to lessen his obsessional anxiety. We see him engage in hand washing rituals with extremely hot water and several bars of soap which is only intrusive to him, to later in the film where he must take a shower before dinner and has the character Carol waiting on him for what seemed like hours. Mr. Udall has a ritual to eat at a certain restaurant everyday for breakfast, where he also must bring his own plastic silverware for fear of germs. Mr. Udall shows his compulsive traits by feeling the need to lock his apartment door three times, turns the lights on and off five times and cannot step on cracks or lines in the flooring or street. These repetitive behaviors are normally not intrusive to others, but Mr. Udall does involve others in his compulsion when he is trying not to step on the cracks in the sidewalk. We do not know the exact rationale behind his compulsions, but many people fear that something bad will happen if they do not engage in their compulsion. What is interesting about Mr. Udall is how he did not perceive his quality of life to be ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 7. Between Wonder, Imagination And Space In A Midsummer s... In A Midsummer s Night Dream, Shakespeare tells us a poet s task is to transform things unknown to shapes that give to airy nothing a local habitation and a name, suggesting a defined context ( local habitation ) and words ( a name ) (5.1.65). Without a named place we live in a chaotic world. Likewise, without the development of language from a pool of amorphous sensations in our brain we cannot begin to approach creativity. Words and how they are used become tools to chisel meaning from undefined emotion. This process of making creative order out of chaos begins with the child s sense of wonder and curiosity. The relationship between wonder, imagination and space is a complex one, even a poetic one. We begin life in a pre verbal paradisiacal state. With the acquisition of language comes a separation akin to the fall, resulting in melancholy and a desire to return to this preverbal bliss. Through a close examination of Alice in Wonderland and Through the Looking Glass we can explore universal grammatical structures, using linguistic techniques and other literary devices to show these connections and how they inspire wonder in children. II. Exposition: The Wondrous Landscape A. Definition of Wonder and Imagination But how do we define wonder and how is it related to imagination ? Moreover what have these two concepts to do with language and ultimately the power to inspire children to be creative? The Oxford English Dictionary uses words like astonishment, ... • 8. Roman Empire Vs Germanic Society Essay While both Roman society and Germanic society do not view slaves as full people each society does have some safeguards to slaves wellbeing. Although both societies try to protect their slaves they also illustrated that slaves were not equal to free and even freed slaves were not equal. While both societies have positive aspects to their treatment of slaves I believe it would be better to be a slave in a Germanic society rather than a Roman society. In a Germanic society a slave had a greater ability to marry, slaves also had the ability to pay fines for wrong doing rather than receive physical punishment and in Germanic law codes there was more of a focus on petty crime committed by slaves rather than in Roman codes where there was a ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Roman law does not recognize the ability of a slave to marry. Any physical relations with a slave in Roman law, even if consensual were not permitted, nor were family relationships among slaves recognized by law (Civilizations 111). The inability of slaves to enjoy the normalcy of relationships with family members or a partner shows how much more restrictive Roman society was. It also shows that Romans viewed their slaves as less human than did Germanic people. When slaves were being punished for crimes such as thievery or other common crimes in Salic areas they could face very harsh physical punishment, such as lashing and castration if male (Civilizations ). If slaves confessed to their crimes they, or more likely their owner, would be able to pay a fine, and restore the stolen property, or value of the property, in order to prevent physical harm as a punishment for their crime. Roman laws about crimes concerning slaves are about punishment for killing slaves by free people, other than their owner, or maintaining slaves loyalty to their owners (Civilizations 114). This shows that these were the problems that the Romans were dealing with and in comparison to the Germanic problems, murdering slaves was not just a petty crime. Laws concerning crimes committed by or against salves display that the Roman Empire s problem was not with minor crime but with serious offenses ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 9. The Prosecutors Firearm Identification Testimony The prosecutors firearm identification testimony for the case was poorly executed which allowed Waite to reexamine the bullets from the case and what he found was the rifling markings did not match up with the bullets that were test fired from Steielow s gun. They determined that Stielow was not guilty due to the conclusion that his firearm was not used in the crime. Following this case Waite was inspired to develop a systematic process for documenting ballistics information to avoid making mistakes in later cases. After this Waite began to travel to different firearm manufacturers to document the process of creating the firearms to study the different characteristics in each. As firearm production began to become more advance and higher quality in the assembly process it opened more ways for investigators to attack firearm crimes. The range of evidence that can be recovered from a firearm involved case can be as small as a bullet fragment that holds the rifling markings from the firearm to the firearm itself. The firearm itself is a highly anticipated form of evidence that investigators will search for because of the information it can possess. The firearm itself can hold many different forms of evidence such as the firearm serial number. In 1968 the United States passed the Gun Control Act, which obligates that all guns manufactured or imported to the USA must obtain a serial number ( Gun Control Act | ATF , 2016). • 11. King Narmer s Second Dynasty On a cultural, economic and political level, Egypt has been largely shaped by the idiosyncrasies of its various rulers. Egypt s first leap towards becoming an advanced civilisation began with King Narmer s unification of Upper and Lower Egypt. Although the first 200 years of Egypt s unification do not appear to have been peaceful, cultural development accelerated ahead during the early dynasties. The tensions between the North and South throughout Egypt s second dynasty continued to grow until Khasekhemwy s ascension to the throne. As the last King of the Second Dynasty, he is widely recognised as the King that resolved the conflict between the two sides, however, how this was achieved is not known. The validity of Narmer s pharaonic title is supported by the seal impressions found in the Abydos tombs which have provided an ancient list of Kings, of which Narmer is recorded as a pharaoh. His rule was further consolidated by his marriage with Neithhotep, a supposed Lower Egyptian Princess, as suggested by Sir Flinders Petrie. Egyptian culture has not only benefited from the Unification, rather the economy as well. Narmer s name has been found outside Egypt, in Syria Palestine which indicates that some form of contact and active trade was present between Egypt and parts of the Ancient Near East, and thus creating trade links bettering Egypt s future economic prospects. As a result of the accelerated cultural development brought upon by Narmer s unification of Upper and Lower Egypt, handicrafts, mason s skills, architecture, burial customs , writing art, bureaucracy and politics have improved dramatically. Given the eons long perspective of the natural environment, it would be very difficult to identify meaningful changes in event frequency for the short time period in which scientific records are available on geological, meteorological, and hydrological phenomena. Event frequency, from an emergency management perspective, is not really the issue. It is certainly true that, over the years, more people have been affected by natural disasters and losses are becoming progressively greater. The significant feature driving these observations, however, is the extent of human encroachment into hazard prone areas. With increasing population density and changing land use patterns, more people are exposed to natural hazards and consequently our accumulated human and economic losses are increasing. Much of this exposure is a matter of choice. Sometimes people choose hazardous places, building houses on picturesque cliffs, on mountain slopes, in floodplains, near beautiful volcanoes, or along seismic faults. Sometimes people choose hazardous building materials that fail under extreme environmental stresses for example, unreinforced masonry construction in seismically active areas. • 20. Sonnet 138 Analysis The textual differences between the 1599 and 1609 renditions of Shakespeare s Sonnet 138 subtly change the meaning and shift the focus of the poem. Most notably, in the 1609 rendition, more emphasis is placed on their shared complicity and Shakespeare more vividly paints his mistress as an individual opposed to a third party construct. To begin, note the difference in lines 6 8 of both renditions: Although I know my years be past the best, / I, smiling, credit her false speaking tongue, / Outfacing faults in love with love s ill rest (1599) versus Although she knows my days are past the best, / Simply I credit her false speaking tongue: / On both sides thus is simple truth suppressed (1609). In the 1599 rendition, Shakespeare admits to knowing he is old while in the 1609 rendition, his mistress is doing the knowing. By changing the pronouns, Shakespeare makes their deceit seem more mutual because she actively recognizes his age. Obviously, Shakespeare knows he is old what matters is how much his mistress knows it. Allowing his mistress to do the knowing heightens her deceit and by extension their mutual duplicity because the text plainly conveys what she is lying about. Similarly, Shakespeare s complete rework of line 8 in the 1609 rendition further shifts the focus by candidly admitting that On both sides the ugly truth is being ignored. • 26. Eliot s Argument For Moral Judgement In order to fully understand Eliot s statement, it would be helpful to locate the statement in Eliot s essay and then speculate its meaning within its context. Right before the quoted passage, Eliot writes, if were agreed as to what we meant by wisdom, by the good life for the individual and for society, we should apply moral judgements to poetry as confidently as did Johnson (Eliot 212). It seems Eliot implies that Johnson is confident about his moral judgement because there is a consensus in society on what is right and what is wrong. Consequently, when Johnson reads a text, it is relatively easy for him to judge the morality of this work, whereas Eliot s time is an age in which no two writers need agree about anything (Eliot 212). For this reason, Eliot laments that readers in his age must endeavor to discount [the] attraction or repulsion of the ideas, as well as the personality of the author (Eliot 212). Yet in Johnson s age, the relatively homogenous value system, Eliot believes, frees Johnson from the struggle to dissociate the work from the author s idea. Johnson can simply disregard the author and weighs the text against the commonly accepted value, as Eliot says, what interests Johnson is the edifying power of the poem, rather than the deliberate intention of the poet (Eliot, 212). In other words, Eliot portrays Johnson as an disinterested critic who is only interested in how a text reflects the commonly accepted morality. In this sense, Johnson is able ... Miss Universe and Miss USA soon followed, and by the 1960 s beauty pageants were part of American culture. Viewed as a positive and potentially rewarding competition, pageants have now recently had a drastic turn of view. Basketball season was always a fun time. I was a grade younger than most of my friends who were on the team. I was always the kid that was brought up to sit on the bench or be the sixth man. • 36. Essay On Hunger In America Hunger: a feeling of discomfort or weakness caused by lack of food, coupled with the desire to eat. About 795 million people in the world do not have enough food to live a healthy life. When we think of hunger, most of us tend to think of third world countries or places on the other side of the world. Although there is a lot of hunger in those places, there is also a lot of hunger in our country and in our own town. There are multiple factors that contribute to hunger, one of which is food waste. In 2010, thirty one percent of the available food supply in America went uneaten or wasted. Every year, a minimum of 1.3 billion pounds of food goes unused. Not only does the unused food sit in landfills, but when it rots, it produces greenhouse gasses that speed up global warming. Unemployment is also one of the bigger factors in the problem of hunger. Most people commonly associate poverty with hunger. But sadly, in America, unemployment and hunger also go hand in hand. When a person is unable to earn money, they are then unable to buy food, he or she has a higher chance of going hungry. With little money it is harder to find or buy food. At 6 when I first started kindergarten, my parents signed me for a winter YMCA basketball league where I began to shine. Seeing my success in the basketball league, my parents wanted me to play little league next, with the hope that it would be as successful as basketball. Naturally, as I was one of the few kids that could field, I was relegated to second base and occasionally shortstop. While I may have felt that I was one of the best hitters on the team at the time, reflection on my past reminds me that I always had trouble with swinging the bat.
