2013 Presidents' Forum of St. Louis "The Future of Knowledge Work"Robert Rodenbaugh
Stephanie Leffler, CEO of CrowdSource.com, discussed the future of knowledge work. She started by sharing her experience starting an online business that was dependent on others before creating a do-it-yourself ecommerce solution. This led her to discover crowdsourcing which provided scalable labor. Her company CrowdSource.com launched in 2011 and uses crowdsourcing to provide content, moderation, categorization and more. Leffler believes that in the future, work will be much different with work being transparent, measurable, location independent, and optimized for efficiency based on output rather than education.
During this year’s Gartner Symposium/ITxpo, many IT leaders gathered to discuss CIO leadership, technology transformation, and industry trends—including how to prepare for and make the most out of digital disruption. Here are a few interesting excerpts we heard throughout the event.

This document discusses the impact of digital revolution on mergers and acquisitions from a venture capital perspective. It notes that technological shifts have led to 50x more internet users today compared to the past, with online speeds over 120x faster. This has resulted in entrepreneurs needing less capital to start companies. The sources of capital for late-stage private companies have also dramatically increased to include new corporate venture capital entrants like Google, Rakuten and Alibaba. The tech IPO pipeline volume and investment has also increased significantly in recent years.
The document discusses the future of accounting and how technology is changing the industry. It notes that computing power and cloud technology are growing exponentially and disrupting many industries. This allows accounting to move to the cloud and be provided as a service. It suggests accounting firms position themselves as technology firms that provide advisory services in addition to traditional accounting functions. Firms should adopt cloud accounting software, focus on industries, and charge flat monthly fees rather than hourly rates.

Small businesses can leverage technologies used by big competitors to gain competitive advantages like lower costs, faster operations, and more agile learning. They can use open technologies, APIs, and platforms from large companies to access features for free or low costs. Case studies show how companies like Mint.com licensed core technologies from large banks to launch new services more cheaply. Overall, leveraging available technologies allows small businesses to operate more leanly at a fraction of large companies' costs while moving faster and learning from customers more quickly.

This document discusses how companies can transform into "Superstar Companies" by embracing new technologies and facilitating employee conversations on social media. It notes that 15-50 years ago, companies tried to prevent new technologies like social media from being used, due to fears over decreased efficiency and security risks. However, the document argues that companies that facilitate positive employee stories on social media will grow faster. It introduces the role of a "ConversationManager" who can help integrate social media conversations into all departments of a company. The document concludes that companies must start changing their structures and mindsets in order to become fast-growing "Superstar Companies."

It proposes five guiding principles for organizations in this new environment: being purpose-driven, using networks over hierarchies, consent-based self-management, responding to change over following plans, and defaulting to openness.

Software has long been made for big business. This has hurt small business and needs to be fixed. Learn why we need to see a revolution in the software industry.
The document discusses the accelerating pace of digital transformation and disruption across industries. It notes that digital transformation requires more than just a new user interface, but re-engineering organizations to engage customers in new ways through new business models and technologies. The presentation aims to help organizations shift resources from purely tactical activities to truly enabling innovation for customers.
The document discusses strategies for developing a digital strategy that puts people at the center. It advocates understanding people and their needs, rather than focusing on technology alone.
