Animation Techniques
Mickey Mousing
(synchronized,
mirrored, or parallel
scoring)

• A film technique that
  syncs the
  accompanying music
  with the actions on
  screen.
Chuckimation
               • A type of animation created
                 by the makers of the
                 cartoon Action League
                 Now! in which
                 characters/props are
                 thrown, or chucked from off
                 camera or wiggled around
                 to simulate talking by
                 unseen hands, combined
                 with traditional stop motion
                 animation
Cel-shaded animation
(Cel shading or Toon shading)

                                A type of non-photorealistic
                                rendering designed to make
                                computer graphics appear to be
                                hand-drawn. Cel-shading is
often used to mimic the style of
a comic book or cartoon. It is a
                                somewhat recent addition to
                                computer graphics, most
                                commonly turning up in video
                                games.
Multi-sketch
• An animation method of story-
  telling where a sequence of
  hand-drawn sketches are
  created simultaneously while
  narrating it with voice.
Morph target Morph target animation, per-vertex
               animation, shape interpolation, or
animation blend shapes is a method of 3D
               computer animation used together
               with techniques such as skeletal
               animation. In a morph target
animation, a "deformed" version of a
mesh is stored as a series of vertex
positions. In each key frame of an
               animation, the vertices are then
               interpolated between these stored
               positions.
Cut-out animation

                    A technique for
                    producing animations
                    using flat characters,
                    props and
                    backgrounds cut from
                    materials such as
                    paper, card, stiff
                    fabric or even
                    photographs.
Clay animation

Clay animation or claymation All traditional animation is produced in a
is one of many forms of stop similar fashion, whether done through cel
motion animation. Each animation or stop motion. Each frame, or still
animated piece, either picture, is recorded on film or digital media
character or background, is and then played back in rapid succession.
"deformable"—made of a When played back at a frame rate greater
malleable substance, usually than 10–12 frames per second, a fairly
Plasticine clay. convincing illusion of continuous motion is
                               achieved.
Pixilation

Pixilation (from pixilated) is a stop motion technique
where live actors are used as a frame-by-frame
subject in an animated film, by repeatedly posing
while one or more frame is taken and changing pose
slightly before the next frame or frames. The actor
becomes a kind of living stop motion puppet. This
technique is often used as a way to blend live actors
with animated ones in a film, such as in The Secret
Adventures of Tom Thumb by the Bolex Brothers,
which used the technique to compelling and eerie
             effect.

A Flash animation or Flash cartoon is
an animated film which is created
using Adobe Flash or similar animation
software and often distributed in the
.swf file format. The term Flash
animation not only refers to the file
format but to a certain kind of
movement and visual style which, in
many circles, is seen as simplistic or
                    unpolished. However, with dozens of
                    Flash animated television series,
                    countless more Flash animated
                    television commercials, and award-
                    winning online shorts in circulation,
                    Flash animation is enjoying a
                    renaissance.?
Object animation
Object animation is a form of
stop motion animation that
involves the animated
movements of any non-drawn
objects such as toys, blocks,
dolls, etc. which are not fully
malleable, such as clay or wax,
and not designed to look like a
recognizable human or animal
character.
Pinscreen animation

Pinscreen animation makes use of a screen
filled with movable pins, which can be moved in
or out by pressing an object onto the screen.
The screen is lit from the side so that the pins
cast shadows. The technique has been used to
create animated films with a range of textural
effects difficult to achieve with traditional cel
animation.
Onion skinning
Onion skinning is a 2D
computer graphics term for
a technique used in creating
animated cartoons and
editing movies to see
several frames at once. This
way, the animator or editor
can make decisions on how
to create or change an
image based on the
previous image in the
sequence.
Squigglevision

• Squigglevision is a patented method of
  computer animation in which the
outlines of shapes are made to wiggle
and undulate. Tom Snyder of Tom
  Snyder Productions invented the
  technique, which his animation studio
  Soup2Nuts subsequently popularized
  in several successful animated series.

• Compared with traditional animation,
  Squigglevision is relatively fast and
easy to produce. The non-stop motion
of the “squiggling” outlines reduces the
need for more complex animations in
order to make a scene feel dynamic.
Tom Snyder describes the result as
  “economy of motion.”
Puppetoon
Puppetoon animation is a type of
            replacement animation, which is
            itself a type of stop-motion
            animation. In traditional stop-
            motion, the puppets are made
            with movable parts which are
            repositioned between frames to
            create the illusion of motion
when the frames are played in
            rapid sequence. In puppetoon
            animation the puppets are rigid
            and static pieces; each is
typically used in a single frame
            and then switched with a
            separate, near-duplicate puppet
            for the next frame.

The Twelve Basic Principles of Animation

                    • The Twelve Basic Principles of Animation is a set
of principles of animation introduced by the
Disney animators Ollie Johnston and Frank
Thomas in their 1981 book The Illusion of Life:
                        Disney Animation.

                    • The main purpose of the principles was to
produce an illusion of characters adhering to the
basic laws of physics, but they also dealt with
more abstract issues, such as emotional timing
                        and character appeal.

                    • The book and its principles have become
generally adopted, and have been referred to as
the "Bible of animation.“ Though originally
intended to apply to traditional, hand-drawn
animation, the principles still have great
relevance for today's more prevalent computer
                        animation.
Inbetweening
Inbetweening or tweening is the process of
generating intermediate frames between
two images to give the appearance that the
first image evolves smoothly into the
second image. Inbetweens are the
drawings between the key frames which
help to create the illusion of motion.
Inbetweening is a key process in all types
of animation, including computer
animation.

  • 2. Mickey Mousing (synchronized, mirrored, or parallel scoring) • A film technique that syncs the accompanying music with the actions on screen.
  • 3. Chuckimation • A type of animation created by the makers of the cartoon Action League Now! in which characters/props are thrown, or chucked from off camera or wiggled around to simulate talking by unseen hands, combined with traditional stop motion animation
  • 4. Cel-shaded animation (Cel shading or Toon shading) A type of non-photorealistic rendering designed to make computer graphics appear to be hand-drawn. Cel-shading is often used to mimic the style of a comic book or cartoon. It is a somewhat recent addition to computer graphics, most commonly turning up in video games.
  • 5. Multi-sketch • An animation method of story- telling where a sequence of hand-drawn sketches are created simultaneously while narrating it with voice.
  • 6. Morph target Morph target animation, per-vertex animation, shape interpolation, or animation blend shapes is a method of 3D computer animation used together with techniques such as skeletal animation. In a morph target animation, a "deformed" version of a mesh is stored as a series of vertex positions. In each key frame of an animation, the vertices are then interpolated between these stored positions.
  • 7. Cut-out animation A technique for producing animations using flat characters, props and backgrounds cut from materials such as paper, card, stiff fabric or even photographs.
  • 8. Clay animation Clay animation or claymation All traditional animation is produced in a is one of many forms of stop similar fashion, whether done through cel motion animation. Each animation or stop motion. Each frame, or still animated piece, either picture, is recorded on film or digital media character or background, is and then played back in rapid succession. "deformable"—made of a When played back at a frame rate greater malleable substance, usually than 10–12 frames per second, a fairly Plasticine clay. convincing illusion of continuous motion is achieved.
  • 9. Pixilation Pixilation (from pixilated) is a stop motion technique where live actors are used as a frame-by-frame subject in an animated film, by repeatedly posing while one or more frame is taken and changing pose slightly before the next frame or frames. The actor becomes a kind of living stop motion puppet. This technique is often used as a way to blend live actors with animated ones in a film, such as in The Secret Adventures of Tom Thumb by the Bolex Brothers, which used the technique to compelling and eerie effect.
  • 10. Script/Lang-based +Java Animation +HTML5+ A Flash animation or Flash cartoon is an animated film which is created using Adobe Flash or similar animation software and often distributed in the .swf file format. The term Flash animation not only refers to the file format but to a certain kind of movement and visual style which, in many circles, is seen as simplistic or unpolished. However, with dozens of Flash animated television series, countless more Flash animated television commercials, and award- winning online shorts in circulation, Flash animation is enjoying a renaissance.?
  • 11. Object animation Object animation is a form of stop motion animation that involves the animated movements of any non-drawn objects such as toys, blocks, dolls, etc. which are not fully malleable, such as clay or wax, and not designed to look like a recognizable human or animal character.
  • 12. Pinscreen animation Pinscreen animation makes use of a screen filled with movable pins, which can be moved in or out by pressing an object onto the screen. The screen is lit from the side so that the pins cast shadows. The technique has been used to create animated films with a range of textural effects difficult to achieve with traditional cel animation.
  • 13. Onion skinning Onion skinning is a 2D computer graphics term for a technique used in creating animated cartoons and editing movies to see several frames at once. This way, the animator or editor can make decisions on how to create or change an image based on the previous image in the sequence.
  • 14. Squigglevision • Squigglevision is a patented method of computer animation in which the outlines of shapes are made to wiggle and undulate. Tom Snyder of Tom Snyder Productions invented the technique, which his animation studio Soup2Nuts subsequently popularized in several successful animated series. • Compared with traditional animation, Squigglevision is relatively fast and easy to produce. The non-stop motion of the “squiggling” outlines reduces the need for more complex animations in order to make a scene feel dynamic. Tom Snyder describes the result as “economy of motion.”
  • 15. Puppetoon Puppetoon animation is a type of replacement animation, which is itself a type of stop-motion animation. In traditional stop- motion, the puppets are made with movable parts which are repositioned between frames to create the illusion of motion when the frames are played in rapid sequence. In puppetoon animation the puppets are rigid and static pieces; each is typically used in a single frame and then switched with a separate, near-duplicate puppet for the next frame.
  • 17. The Twelve Basic Principles of Animation • The Twelve Basic Principles of Animation is a set of principles of animation introduced by the Disney animators Ollie Johnston and Frank Thomas in their 1981 book The Illusion of Life: Disney Animation. • The main purpose of the principles was to produce an illusion of characters adhering to the basic laws of physics, but they also dealt with more abstract issues, such as emotional timing and character appeal. • The book and its principles have become generally adopted, and have been referred to as the "Bible of animation.“ Though originally intended to apply to traditional, hand-drawn animation, the principles still have great relevance for today's more prevalent computer animation.
  • 18. Inbetweening Inbetweening or tweening is the process of generating intermediate frames between two images to give the appearance that the first image evolves smoothly into the second image. Inbetweens are the drawings between the key frames which help to create the illusion of motion. Inbetweening is a key process in all types of animation, including computer animation.
