Firstly , we will look What is animation,next we will move on history of animation including various animati on techniques used before film, then we will move on Modern animation techniques and finally we will discuss about future of animation." What is Animation? Animation is basically simulation of movement crea ted by displaying a series of pictures, or frames rapidly.In animation, what we perceive as a moving image is actually an illusion. What we are really seeing is a succession of still images displayed in rapid sequence, separated by a small interval o f darkness. When faced with a rapid series of stil l images, our eye and brain will perceive them to be one smoothly moving image.When successive image s are shown at a faster rate, the eye will blend t hem together with the retina retaining one image a s the second is superimposed over it. This creates the illusion of movement.The number of frames per second, or FPS, directly correlates to how smooth the movement appears. If the frame rate is too sl ow, the motion will look awkward and jerky. If the frame rate is too high the motion will blur. So a question arises here..... what is difference b etween video and animation? we have to note the basic difference here,that a v ideo takes continuous motion and breaks it up into discrete frames,whereas animation starts with ind ependent pictures and puts them together to form t
he illusion of continuous motion.

Evidence of artistic interest in depicting figures in motion can be seen in art as early as Paleolit hic cave paintings. Animals in such paintings were often depicted with multiple sets of legs in supe rimposed positions. Because the paintings are preh istoric, alternative interpretations are possible, such as the artist simply deciding to change a le g's position and having no means of erasing, but i t is very likely that these were early attempts to convey motion.Another example is a 5,200-year old pottery bowl discovered in Shahr-e-Sukhteh, Iran. The bowl has five images painted around it that s how phases of a goat leaping up to nip at a tree.A fter merging all the five images we will see the a ctual animation. An Egyptian mural approximately 4000 years old, fo und in the tomb of Khnumhotep at the Beni Hassan c emetery, features a very long series of images tha t apparently depict the sequence of events in a wr estling match.
Animation is a method in which figures are manipulated to appear as moving images. In traditional animation, images are drawn or painted by hand on transparent celluloid sheets to be photographed and exhibited on film.

Film industry has been expansively affected by technological changes. Both mechanical and digital innovations have influenced everything from equipment to distribution, changing how films are made and the way in which we consume them.
New trends in many cases shape directors and filmmakers to think about new approaches when telling stories in motions. Film has developed to one of the most important tools of communication, affecting the way individuals and societies think, act and behave. So, please let me take you through my journey to the film industry in 2050!
3. Ancient Animation ? AD 0 BC 1837-1901 Around the Victorian Era, games such as the Zoetrope, Thaumatropeand Flip Book became popular. These were simple devices that, when moved in their individual way, would produce a basic animation. The earliest examples of “animation” come from Palaeolithic cave paintings and pottery/wall decorations from as far back as 5,200 years ago.
4. 1889 1906 J. Stuart Blackton makes the first animated film which he called "Humorous phases of funny faces." His method was to draw comical faces on a blackboard and film them. This allowed the facial expressions to change before the viewer’s eyes. Emile Reynaud patents the praxinoscope. This is a device that used mirrors to project a sequence of images onto a screen. The infinite tape length changed the medium of animation from a curiosity into entertainment.
5. 1914 1923 Earl Hurd applies for a patent for the process of cel animation. This is the technique of drawing the animated portion of an animation on a clear celluloid sheet and later photographing it with its matching background. Walt and Roy Disney create Disney Brothers Cartoon Studio.
6. 1928 1930 The motion picture The King Of Jazz features an animated prologue by Walter Lantz. It is the first animation to be done in two strip Technicolor. Technicolor is a process of colouring that revolutionised both film and animation. Walt Disney releases "Steamboat Willie”. This was one of the earliest cartoons to have sound. Disney revolutionised cartoons and turned them into a mainstream form of entertainment. The company’s innovations over the following decades include the storyboard, pencil tests, and the multi-plane camera stand.
7. 1930’s 1934 Several notable cartoon characters are created including: Betty Boop, Popeye, Porky Pig, Daffy Duck, and Bugs Bunny. UrbIrwek and Disney create the multi-plane camera. This camera captures animation in 3D by photographing several layers of overlapping cels.
8. 1964 1976 The feature film Futureworld, sequel to the 1973 Westworld, is the first film to feature CGI by making use of a computer-generated hand and face created by then University of Utah graduate students Edwin Catmull and Fred Parke. Catmull would eventually end up as one of the three founders of Pixar and is the current president of Walt Disney Animation Studios and Pixar. Ken Knowlton, working at Bell Laboratories, started developing computer techniques for producing animated movies.
9. 1986 1995 The computer graphics division of George Lucas’s company Lucasfilm, Ltd. is purchased by Steve Jobs for $10million and established along with Catmull and ex-Disney animator John Lasseter as Pixar Animation Films, a company that is famous for their CGI feature films and shorts to this day. Disney/Pixar’s first film Toy Story becomes the first feature length film to be made entirely of CGI.
11. Cel Animation DEFINITION:The process of first drawing each frame of animation onto paper, then transferring these to transparent acetate sheets (cels, short for celluloid). Colour is then added on the reverse of the cel. Layers are built up to create dimension. The cels are individually photographed onto film by a rostrum camera.

The traditional method of cel animation (hand drawn and coloured) is now obsolete due to new technologies. “Tradigital” can be used to describe traditional animation that uses technology, for instance, in the colouring process. 13. Cel Animation Variations Live Action/Animation: combining live action footage with cel animations e.g. Space Jam, Who Framed Roger Rabbit... Rotoscoping: the process of tracing live action footage and turning it into cel animation. This is a technique to achieve realistic animation and used greatly by Disney

18. Stop Motion Animation Definition: the process of animating physical objects as opposed to images. The object is photographed, moved slightly, then photographed again and so on...
