1. Direct on-site interview
technique
- Interview anglers one by
one by asking them
question from the
questionnaire
- Interview each respondent
in the sample directly at the
fishing site
- Advantages: high response
rate, data will be accurate
and precise
- Disadvantages: time
consuming too long to
directly interview, may
disturb anglers, not suitable
for large sample and long
questionnaire
2. Direct on-site non interview
technique
- Distributes questionnaire
forms without interviewing
them and data collector
must supervise respondents

Advantages: won’t disturb
anglers, won’t be time
consuming, easier for
researcher
Disadvantages: low
response rates if
respondents not to
responds, data may be
inaccurate and deficient
3. Combination of on-site
interview and non interview
technique
- Some anglers are directly
interview while others are
given to complete
questionnaire form
- Advantages: suitable for a
large sample, more
respondents can be
included in the sample
- Disadvantages: if sample is
big anglers may feel
disturbed by interview
process, bias in data from
interview and noninterview
4. Telephone survey technique
- Respondent are
interviewed on phone
based on questions in the
survey form
- Advantages: accurate and
precise data, high response
rate, interviewer does not
need to go to fishing site,
respondent feel more
relaxed being at home.
- Disadvantages: data will
easier to lost, expensive
because the phone bill may
be high, some respondent
may refuse, bias because
not all respondents may
have telephone, need to
find ways to get
respondents phone
numbers
2. 5. Internet survey technique
- Respondent fill in the
questionnaire form that is
sent to email address on
the internet and after
complete forward it back to
the researcher
- Advantages: does not
disturb the respondent, no
pressure on respondent,
cheap, easy to contact the
respondent, suitable for
large sample size and long
questionnaire
- Disadvantages: low
response rate, data may be
inaccurate, not all
respondent are computer
literate.
6. Mail or postal survey technique
- Questionnaire form is
mailed to respondent at
home/office address.
- Advantages: does not
disturb respondent, no
pressure on respondent,
suitable for very large
sample and long survey
questionnaire
- Disadvantages: low
response rate, data and
information may be in
accurate, expensive due to
the need to spend money
on envelopes and stamps.
