Looking After Skellig Characters
David Almond has included many recurring themes throughout the book Skellig. In the novel, there is
a strong, obvious friendship between Michael, Mina and Skellig. There is a lot of change that the
characters must deal with and their friends and family are there to help support them. The theme death
reoccurs throughout the novel which gives the book a deeper meaning. There is a strong and obvious
friendship between Michael, Mina and Skellig. On page 38, Mina took Michael to a place no one
knows about. This showed that Mina trusted Michael to keep her secret. Michael did the same for her.
On page 76, Michael showed Mina the extraordinary being in his garage. The two characters
developed a strong friendship early in the book and continued to develop it when they looked after
Skellig. In return for Michael looking after Skellig, on page 150, Michaels mum describes the man
coming into the hospital ward, before the baby went into surgery, and danced with her to give her
some strength. Throughout the book, these 3 characters have a very strong friendship because Michael

Roman Architecture Research Paper
Two of the most important developments which were unique to Roman architecture were that of the
use of the arch and concrete. Although not having invented any of these facets of architecture, Romans
managed to expand their use in such a way that it became popular in Roman history as a staple of their
architectural style.
The arch is a very popularly used structure for buildings, even today. They provide a lot of structural
support to buildings, the potential to create entryways and also give a unique space to adding art and
beauty to the structure being built. Romans saw the beauty in the arch, and decided to use it in many
of their building plans. According to the Empire Rome article of architecture, arches originally came
from the Etruscans, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The arches were a structural design which allowed for more advanced engineering to take place in
Roman structures, along with providing opportunity for them to express themselves through art and
decoration of the arches. This lead to arches being very symbolic of how Romans approached
building, as they were seen as one of the best things to have included in your buildings as they were
both useful and beautiful. Concrete, although less paid attention to, was equally as important because
it was a low cost and easily mixed and laid material which allowed Romans to get more creative with
their buildings and keep creating more even in times of financial strain. Concrete usually isn t seen as
being a symbol of Roman architecture because at a glance it is not always immediately obvious
whether or not a building of made of concrete but looking closely to many of the structures you can
see that it was pretty widely used in most of their buildings. Although not having invented either
concrete or arches, Romans managed to expand their use in such a way that it became popular in

Reducing Congestive Heart Failure Complications
Individuals with end stage decompensated congestive heart failure (CHF) will often be admitted to the
hospital when complications arise. This is often the case because treatments (such as intravenous
medications) needed to deal with the various complications of CHF require interventions that need to
be administered by a team of medical staff with close monitoring of the patient. According to the CDC
website report Hospitalizations for Congestive Heart Failure: United States 2000 2010, 5.8 million
people suffer from CHF in the United States, and hospitalization rates for individuals under the age of
65 with CHF increased significantly from 23% to 29% with rates for men higher compared to women.
Fluid retention that is unresponsive to oral diuretic treatments is one of the most common situations
that lead to a hospital admission (Austin, Hockey, Williams, Hutchison, 2013). Detecting early signs
of decompensated heart failure could help reduce the need for a hospital admission and improve the
quality of life for those with end stage CHF by allowing treatment to occur in the home setting that
might normally be provided in the hospital

War In Afghanistan Research Paper
Afghanistan has been the worst country when it comes to drug production. Afghanistan farmers
produce a plant called, Papaver Somniferum , but also known as opium poppy which goes into more
than 90% of the heroin worldwide. This country has been the world s greatest illegal opium producer,
ahead of the Golden Triangle (Three of the largest producers in Asia), and Latin America since 1992.
Afghanistan is the main producer of opium in the Golden Crescent . Government issues are climbing
caused by drug use and production in the country. With the already worsening conflict in the all time
record drug production in Afghanistan has recently caused a wave of panic. Government official calls
have been made for robust military action by NATO forces to contain the drug industry in southern
Afghanistan. By doing this they are afraid that intensifying the war on drugs in Afghanistan now
would further fuel the conflict, which is the last thing that the country needs right now. Over ... Show

Islam In Salman Rushdie s The Satanic Verses
Muhammad was the last Prophet of Islam who was born in Mecca in 570 CE. He is the most
prominent figure in Islam. Muslims all around the world consider him as a role model and how he
lived his life is considered the standard of how every Muslim should live. Not only was he a religious
leader, he was also a politician, a warrior and a state head. Even some non Muslims have praised his
military and political role in shaping the middle east during that time. However, there were also
scholars who have criticized him and his preachings. There have been many forms of literature that
depict Muhammad in a very vile and repulsive light such as Salman Rushdie s novel, The Satanic
Verses . Although he claims that his novel is a work of art, and should not be interpreted in a literal
manner. However, I think that his novel insults Muhammad and is also offensive to Muslims as he
uses several Islamic themes and allusions and degrades them.
The setting of the novel takes place in England. It is the theme of being brown in England which
Rushdie wrote about. The main character of the novel and the first character introduced is Gibreel
Farishta who personifies Angel Gabriel. He has series of dreams which are explained in detail in the
second chapter of the book. One of his dreams include the character Mahound who was an orphan and
a businessmen living in a city called Jahilia. He begins to preach a religion called Submission. In
another chapter Gibreel has a series of encounters with a

The Cause Of Poverty In The United States
Poverty is one of the most prevalent issues in our world today. In many third world countries, most of
citizens live in poverty. Somalia is one of these third world countries that have extreme rates of
poverty. There are many factors that have led to these major rates of poverty. Somalia s economy is
very bad because of the high unemployment rates and piracy. Because of the civil war that happened
in Somalia, the government is not able to help decrease poverty levels. Lack of education in the
country makes it difficult for people to get jobs. The economy, the government and the education

Education is very important for everyone to have but many of the schools that were located within
Somalia are gone, In Central South Somalia more than three quarters of public schools that existed
before the civil war have been destroyed and/or closed and state intervention in the education sector
has been limited. (Education in Somalia, n.d. para. 2). Meaning that many of the children who live in
Somalia, are not getting a proper education. Even if they go to receive an education, they are not there
for very long, Children are in school for an average of only three years, with 50 percent of the child
population contributing to the work force. (Poverty in Somalia, n.d. para. 9). Because these people live
in such poverty, these children choose to work to earn some money instead of receiving an education.
Many people in the country are illiterate, Only 37.8 percent of the population over the age of 15 can
read and write. (Poverty in Somalia, n.d. para. 8). Because of these facts, many of the Somalian people
cannot get better jobs. This also makes it extremely difficult for the Somalian people to go to different
countries in search for a better life. These are the reasons why the education of the Somalian people

How Did Child Labor Occur During The Second Industrial...
During the Second Industrial Revolution many people were getting jobs because of the growing
industrialization. The Second Industrial Revolution was led by the United States causing countless
new business and factories to start opening up. By the mid 1800 s child labor started to be an
extensive concern because the factories were both dangerous and disgusting. Child labor became a
substantial matter once machines in factories replaced hand labor because machines were extremely
unsafe. When the factories started to open more workers were needed that would be paid very little.
During the Industrial Revolution child labor increased because of the need for cheap labor, the new
inventions and technologies, and the lack of workers. During the Second American Revolution there ...

When these new machines were put into factories the owners had to go and find more workers. The
big issue factory owners had was trying to find workers that were willing to work for a low price.
Finding workers that were willing to work for a low price was extremely hard because everyone was
trying to make enough money to support their families. Poor children and their families relied on child
labor in order to improve their chances of obtaining their chances of obtaining basic necessities (Child

Project Management Plan For Projects Essay
Project Procurement Management
Name: Artemus Brown
American Military University
1.1. Project management plan
Project management plays a vital part in planning and determining the project s directions and it
likewise guarantees that project can be executed on budget, on time and meet organization s
requirements. (Bernard David, 2003) Thus, clear vision, plan and strategy ought to be resolved to
know that project ought to be controlled (Holland, 1999).
The project management plan should obviously clear up how the craved objectives can be
accomplished. There are three frequently interrelated and contending objectives in project
management that ought to be met: Cost, scope and time. (Bhatti, 2005)
The projects are constantly assessed in light of the accomplishment of particular objectives, to be
specific; cost, time spent and scope. So higher level of responsibility of these triple requirements is
considered as project management s essential elements of project management, which implies
adjusting trade offs in the middle of cost and time, furthermore, performance while in the long run
fulfilling the clients. (Erik Clifford, 2011)
Manager of the project ought to contemplate the realistic way of triple constrains. For example, if the
timelines are very tight and the project scope is very large it will be difficult to reach the expected and
desired result. As a result, the manager of the project continually settles on tradeoff choices among
these three

Egyptian Pyramids Essay
In the deserts of Egypt lie the colossal remains of an ancient civilization. These enormous works of
human endeavor are the only member of the Seven Ancient Wonders of the World that time has passed
down to us. These are, of course, the great pyramids of ancient Egypt. But these imposing structures
were not built to impress civilization millennia down the road. The pyramids in fact had a purpose to
the ancient Egyptians. While they seem very simple in nature, as they are simply four sided pyramids
with square bases, they had a meaning for those that had them built. Even by today s standards, the
pyramids of ancient Egypt were an impressive feat of engineering, due to their enormous size, both in
building materials and finished product. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
It was achievements such as these that gained Imhotep great respect among later Egyptians who not
only saw him as a great architect, but also a magician, astronomer, and the father of the art of
medicine (Edwards 35). Step pyramids are similar to the pyramids we know today, but instead of
being flat on all four sides, they have setbacks as they rise, giving the appearance of giant steps.
These step pyramids were not true pyramids, however, but by the second dynasty of the Old Kingdom,
true pyramids began to take shape. The now ruined pyramid of Meidum is an early example of a true
pyramid. While the ruined core of the superstructure is the only thing that really remains of this
pyramid, archaeologists have deduced that it was originally built as a step pyramid, and then later
converted to a true pyramid by building over the steps, thereby flattening the sides (Edwards 74 77).
However, the evolution of the true pyramid was not without its flaws. One good example of this is the
Bent Pyramid at Dahshur. At the beginning of its existence, the pyramid was supposed have a slope of
60 degrees. But when the pyramid was being built, cracks began to develop in it, so the builders
quickly compensated by giving the sides a shallower angle. However, it appears they did not
compensate enough, and another adjustment had to be

Jerk Seasoning
While much of the unique flavor of the jerk style of cooking has to do with the type of wood used to
smoke the meat, a lot of has to do with the seasoning. Jerk seasoning s seasonings flavor is as complex
as it is pungent. While it has a distinctive flavor, it can be replaced if you cannot find a prepackaged
blend or are out of it. If you need a jerk seasoning substitute, consider the options below.
Make your own
As with many spice blends, the easiest way to replace it is simply to make your own. Like most spice

John Calvin Essay
John Calvin There are many people in history who have made a very big impact on their culture,
times, and or religion. John Calvin was by far one of these few great people. He had such a big
influence in the time which he lived from 1509 to 1564. John Calvin devoted almost his whole life to
the promoting of Protestantism and made such a difference that his impact is still seen today in
Christianity. Calvin was born in France and was the second son in his family of five brothers. He grew
and then decided to go to the famous University of Paris to study to be a priest. His father then had a
conflict with the bishop who employed him so he then turned to the study of law. While he was

It did not turn out his way at all. This resulted in anti Protestant protests all over Paris, forcing him to
flee for his own safety. He roamed Tramontana 2 from place to place and then ended up in Basle,
Switzerland. This is where he started his writing. You see John Calvin was considered a quiet, timid
natured man. The kind of man who would never fight in disputes. In his time there he really got to do
the things he wanted to accomplish out of life. These were to study and learn about God and his holy
word. After this he went to Geneva after getting kicked out for his teachings he got invited back to
help turn the city around spiritually. He never held a political office in Geneva but he ruled with
strictness and sin was punished. He had laws passed to promote Christian behaviour. Persecuted
Protestants fled from all over Europe to reside here. One last thing Calvin is known for is his theology.
This is put together in a Calvinism. The ideas of the Calvin doctrine are men are completely unable to
save themselves with their own works. Salvation is a matter of God s choosing those who will be
saved, and that God chooses without any consideration of a man s good works. If someone is chosen
of God, there was no way they could ever reject Christ or fail to endure to the end of their Christian
life. Finally, he taught that Jesus died only for the

During the Attack on the Tuileries palace, the march was bigger than expected so the crowd defeated

women took part actively within the revolution as they marched too and risked their lives as well as
men. Similar to the storming of Bastille when the people entered the prison and freed the prisoners

protestors robbed the city armory for weapons as they marched to the Palace of Versailles, the
Egyptian stole weapons from the police stations. In France, they formed the National Assembly at that

The Role Of The CIAAid In Afghanistan
The CIA has played a prominent role combating radical Islamic groups in Afghanistan, Pakistan, and
the Middle East since 1979. After the soviet invasion of Afghanistan in 1979, the CIA even funded
some of these groups in order to embarrass their main enemy at the time, the Soviet Union. They did
not, however, account for the fallout that would occur after the Soviets left. To a certain extent, the
terrorist attacks on 9/11 were a blowback from CIA policies in that region, and the attacks, arguably,
could have been prevented.

Media Coverage On The Vietnam War
The Vietnam War introduced many new forms of technology on and off of the battlefield. Increased
weaponry helped shape the outcome of the war, but media coverage also played a large role in
representing the news and opinions of the war. Viet Thanh Nguyen s The Sympathizer helps illustrate
how the media influences and spreads the opinions of the people during the Vietnam War. The war
media, which includes newspapers, movies, and most importantly television, caters towards its
audience. What the media publishes shapes the public opinion, and the media creates their stance
based on the profit they receive.
The media reports on material that will produce the largest viewership. War coverage is the most
profitable form of news that these news sites cover, so when a war is being fought, they cover the war
almost exclusively to gain a large audience. CNN saved their company from going bankrupt by
exclusively showing coverage of the Iraq War in 1991; now they are a multibillion dollar business
venture. Television media such as CNN and FOX News cover positive stories and news, but the
negative news gains them the largest audience, which translates to the largest revenue. The primary
drive for these media networks is profit and market shares rather than upholding high journalistic

Introduction.. Humans Are Known To Be Omnivores And Meat
Introduction.
Humans are known to be omnivores and meat provides several essential nutrients that plants can not
give us. Meat is primarily a source of omega 3 fatty acids, vitamin B12, protein and iron (Verma and
Banerjee 2010). Livestock sector is one of the fastest growing agricultural subsector globally,
employing 1.3 billion individuals and supporting around 600 million poor smallholder farmers in the
developing world (Thornton et al. 2002). Livestock provide us food such as meat to maintain the
health of the human body (Nestle 1999). With population growth, urbanization, economic growth, and

additionally one of the primary drivers of deforestation, deprivation of wildlife habitats, and an
abundant accumulation of nutrients that decrease oxygen in water ways. About 34% of the GHG

Early Junior Year Research Paper
Early junior year was a very rough time for me when it comes to the gradebook. The first semester of

As my dad looked at my grades for the first time his face was overcome with the purest form of
disbelief and frustration and from that moment I know it was over. He pulled me from the Fall musical

Lenin s revolution placed himself suddenly in a situation which Marx had never written from. The
revolution occurred, Bolsheviks had seized power, and suddenly a state would have to be developed
that would wither away while at the same time facing a civil crisis; a task deemed near impossible
(Lecture, Hoston March 7th). Lenin s own arguments prior to this held a much more anarchical view,
advocating for the abolition of the army, of long term bureaucracy, and of the police force (State and
Revolution 339). These calls would not be what went into effect in the end. It is here we see the first
of the many major departures from Lenin s original theory which began to address the reality Russia
was in. Lenin had realized that a state had to be strong at some point, even if marching towards
communism as Communism, makes the state absolutely unnecessary, for there is nobody to be
oppressed (State and Revolution 375). At the point Lenin was in power, the communists still had those

The final phase of the profit planning process was a top management meeting which brought together
Jacques, the three regional vice presidents, and the finance and technical officers to discuss new
growth opportunities. A lot of time and face to face contact was devoted to the profit plan and, once
approved, it was the guiding tool to monitor and evaluate performance. During the summer months,
each region generated a profit statement every two weeks that Jacques reviewed to detect major
problems. In addition, Jacques spent a week in each region to get a feel for the market. At the end of
October, another top management meeting occurred to learn from the year s experience and schedule
winter activities to prepare for the next season. In early December, Jacques handed bonus checks to
the three regional managers. Top line revenue goals for the upcoming year were established using past
growth rates and the market expectations of Jacques and the regional managers. Exchanging
knowledge and experiences was a key element in shaping the growth assumptions of the profit plan.
For 2009, the expected volume growth was 9% for the French region, 10% for the Spanish region, and

Iliad Women
The women of the Iliad play significant roles in the Trojan war, regardless of whether or not their role
is active. Although they do not take up arms and fight, Chryseis, Briseis, Helen, and Andromache all
impact both the outcome of the war as well as the lives and reputations of those in it.
Chryseis, the first woman to be mentioned in the Iliad, is the one who inadvertently sets off a chain of
events that would ultimately determine the outcome of the war. Because Agamemnon refused to return
her to her father when asked, despite all of his men agreeing that he should, Apollo sent down a plague
to ravage the Greeks (1: 11 55). When Agamemnon finally agrees to give her back to her father, he
only does so on the condition that Briseis, Achilles woman, be given to him to make up for his loss (1:
178 185). Chryseis is part of the gera of Agamemnon, and because one s rewards should equal one s
excellence (deserved or not), Agamemnon is not willing to let her go without some sort of
compensation.
Briseis, the woman taken by Achilles as his prize after the sacking of Thebes, is the catalyst for
Achille s rage (1: 351 380). She represents his aristeia, his kleos, his tĂme; she is his geras for their
victory over Thebes. Achilles refusal to give ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
What s more, there would have been no unified Greek army without her and the oaths sworn to
Menelaus. She is an embodiment of Menelaus kleos, and her theft is an insult and a blow to his
reputation as both a husband and a leader. During the events of the Iliad, she serves to remind Paris of
his cowardice (3: 427 435). She also begins to see the error in what she has done/what has happened
to her and looks upon Menelaus in a favorable light (3: 142 145). It is said that this is because the
goddess Iris placed those feelings in her heart but it serves to imply that a great warrior and leader is

Career Goals
Essay Question: What are your short term and long term career goals? How will the Columbia
Business School MBA help you achieve these goals? I have always been told to figure out what you
like to do and then make a career out of it. Eight years ago, armed with this bit of philosophy, I set out
to find out what I liked to do. Before entering college I realized that my interests lay in business. In
college, my courses in business were the ones looked forward to the most, and my business projects
and presentations were the most challenging and rewarding of all my undergraduate course work. So,

bolster my knowledge in this area. I would love to have the chance to participate in the Chazen
Institute s exchange program with a partner school, especially the Chinese University of Hong Kong.
Not only would I learn a lot by participating in this program, but I am also confident that I could teach
my fellow students the things that I have learned in my previous Chinese studies. Also, given the fact
that I want to one day pursue a life of entrepreneurship, I am interested in Columbia s emphasis on
this area. While I do not plan on launching my new venture immediately after school, I would like to
participate in the Columbia Entrepreneurs Organization or compete with a team in a business plan

excited about exploring the idea of entrepreneurship with them. My professional experiences thus far
have enabled me to learn a great deal while reaching my aggressive professional goals. I know I will

The Movie Jaws Was Written By Peter Benchley And Directed...
The movie Jaws was written by Peter Benchley and directed by Steven Spielberg. It created mass
chaos in an unknowing world. In Francis s article The State of Sharks, 40 Years After Jaws, he drives
into the negative and positive effects of Jaws on shark populations. He mostly focuses on Australia
and the United States. Before the movie was released, little was known about sharks. People were
oblivious to the danger, but swimming was not a huge recreational activity. Early sailors wrote
journals about deep sea monsters looming in the darkness, but the public dismissed these tales as pure
folklore (Francis). After the movie was released, the public was terrified and since little was known
about sharks, the media and public accepted the image provided from Jaws. The image of sharks as
rogue man eaters made fishermen rush to the shore to go shark hunting. Sharks were used as game in
competitions, prizes for fishermen trying to protect the shores, and their fins were cut off for shark fin
soup, common in Asia for traditional events (Francis). The fear of sharks was heavily influenced by
the press who, to sell more copies, used over dramatic stories and abstract wording to scare people. As
best said by The Sydney Morning Herald fear sells. Major newspapers that were traditionally
conservative like the New York Times and the New York Herald, started to publish stories about man
eating beasts and bloodthirsty monsters, (Francis). As a precautionary action, beaches set up

Howard Wright is an English director, screenwriter, producer, and actor born in 1974. Wright has
never classified as one of those filmmakers who you would expect to follow along the lines of his past
work, which include his comical genre rethink zombie flick, Shaun of the Dead and the cop caper Hot
Fuzz . As a young teenager he started making short films with a Super 8 camera. Continuing his early
film career, after he won a Video 8 camera in a comic relief contest he decided he wanted to get into
the movies. A few movies and awards latter he now has the status of a top director in cinematic arts.
Well thought through, Wright remixes the movies and tunes that have influenced him, into the widely
joyous and fantastically entertaining Baby Driver. A genre ride with a rebuilt engine and a sick paint
job, Baby Driver shows movement and sometimes stillness. When you first see Baby that displays his
handle, which suits Mr. Elgort who plays Baby. With his angelic face and young man s lissomness he
has control in the driver s seat, where he belongs. This is how baby does things, with shifting gears,
pumping feet and thumping tunes, and how Mr. Wright rolls here as well. Excitingly the story
illustrates Baby getting in and out of trouble while discovering love and money. He does not have

`` Repent, Harlequin, By Harlan Ellison
Harlan Ellison uses strong imagery in his short story Repent, Harlequin! said the Ticktockman to
better develop the characters and setting. The personalities of both the Harlequin and the Ticktockman
are developed through Ellison s imagery of their physical forms and of their personas. The dull setting
of the short story is created through the author s imagery of machinery, particularly clockwork, and
Mondrian arrangements. Ellison s use of imagery allows the reader to pull from this story deeper,
more significant meaning than what appears on the surface. According to White, the disruptive and
rebellious Harlequin is an anomaly: the only human being distinguishable from machines (White, 1).
In order to clearly establish the Harlequin as the only individual within his society, Ellison employs
the use of strong imagery to cause him to stand out among the rest of the characters. One way that
Ellison does this is using rather outlandish language to describe the Harlequin. Aside from being a
personality, which in and of itself is outrageous to the System, the Harlequin is also a laughing,
irresponsible japer of jabberwocky and jive (953, 955). This imagery of a jester or a jokester creates
the idea that the Harlequin is merely a nuisance to his society rather than a dangerous rebellious force.
When the Harlequin is flying the air boat that he uses to drop jelly beans on to the metronomic Timkin
workers, he is not described as merely flying this boat over the people

Second Lines in New Orleans
On the morning of August 29, 2005 was one of the deadliest hurricanes in the United States, known as
Hurricane Katrina struck the south coast of New Orleans, leaving thousands of African American
whom lived in Treme homeless, missing and hundreds dead. Way before the hurricane Treme, which
is one of the oldest African American neighborhoods in New Orleans. The city of New Orleans is
officially divided into 73 neighborhoods grouped into 13 planning districts. Among these, the 4th
district is of interest because of its central location, cultural history, and socio economic challenges

your family was (Barrios, 14). Cheryl Austin caused much commotion with his comments and sparked
attention with Pierre Bourdieu, who describes her as recently, arrived outsiders. For me, if you did not
grow up here, you cannot appreciate living here. People who think like that, people who want Treme
transformed, could go anywhere and dismantle what was there and build what they wanted. For
outsiders, the most important thing here is the building. For us, it is our culture, for us, that is, what we
consider community, not the buildings (Barrios, 15). Both Austin and Bourdieu make two completely
point about the way they view their culture difference of Treme. To my knowledge what Austin was
trying to interpret his view is that when he grew up in Treme, it was all about being free and being
comfortable around your own neighborhood, which I absolutely agree with. I wouldn t want to live in

Issues Influencing The Society Today
There are numerous issues influencing the society today. In fact, it is quite shocking that they keep on
increasing as time goes by. Moreover, most of these social issues are perpetuated through the people s
strive for superiority. For instance, racism keeps on escalating due to the fact that some races want to
prove their dominance over the rest. Consequently, the parties involved in such scenarios end up being
either the victim or perpetrator. Charlotte Perkins Gilman illustrates the state of the society; whereby
gender inequality has become the new normal. In her analysis, the society has become degraded to a
point that the men are superior, actually too superior over the women. This has been evident through
some of the roles allocated ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In point of fact, women have to endure and overcome a lot of obstacles so as to achieve what men
have managed to without struggle. Inequality is not only exhibited through the roles allocated to them,
but also in payment, an act which has led to the emanation of the gender wage gap. These issues have
also escalated in religion. Religiously inspired gender inequality is usually manifested through the
privileges and opportunities which are granted based on an individual s gender. Specifically, gender
inequality has been made apparent in religion through the gendered institutions, gendered identities,
gendered interactions, and gender ideologies. Patriarchal church leaderships are clear signs of how
deep gender inequality has been integrated into religion (Shepard 413). Women are given less
leadership roles compared to men, and sometimes are not even considered at all in any decision
making process. Such acts are clear indicators of how gender inequality is negatively affecting the
society. Actually, it is quite saddening that even the most respected aspects of the society (such as
religion) are participating in these tainted acts. Religion is meant to enforce religious based norms and
morals, and in fact, it should be rock steady in the fight against gender equality. Thus, as per Gilman s
analysis, the human society in general has been tarnished through gender related issues. Most women

Rhetorical Analysis Of Virginia Woolf
Rhetorical Analysis Essay Woolf Alanna Kellam 1B In her memoir, Virginia Woolf discusses a
valuable lesson learned during her childhood fishing trips in Cornwall, England. To convey the
significance of past moments, Woolf incorporates detailed figurative language and a variety of syntax
into her writing. Woolf communicates an appreciative tone of the past to the audience, emphasizing its
lasting impact on her life. Woolf organizes her writing using various forms of syntax which
contributes to the significance of the memory. The author s portrayal of the setting is recounted with
long, detailed sentences in order to illustrate its importance. The excitement of fishing is depicted as
Woolf retells Sometimes the lines would be handed to us; baited by gobbets cut from fish; and the line
thrilled in one s fingers as the boat tossed and shot through the water (12 15). The author includes
multiple semicolons not only to extend the sentence, but to also present similar ideas in a like
structure. Notably, the author conveys tactile imagery to support the lengthy sentences with
compelling details. The tossing of the boat and the touch of the fishing line embodies the exciting
chaos the author had felt in the past. As a result, readers are then able to understand the specific
attributes of Woolf s memory that made the experience significant. Additionally, Woolf further
develops the impact of her excitement as she describes ...and then how can I convey the excitement?
there was a little leaping tug... (15 17). Again, lengthy sentence structure helps to connect the images
of her memory. The dashes communicate to readers a sense of the author s internal thoughts, as if she
was writing all that was on her mind. The dashes outline changes in the flow of the language, so that
readers can note clearly defined shifts. They also symbolize the vividness of her memories, therefore
the significance of the events in her situation. Unique from the majority of the sentences, Woolf
includes declarative structure as she states It was a perfect lesson (25). The line stands out to the
readers, amongst the other sentences, because of its length, which is intended to convey an idea
directly. The

Similarities Between Fahrenheit 451 And The Veldt
Fahrenheit 451 The Veldt Comparison
Fahrenheit 451 compares to The Veldt in many ways. Fahrenheit 451 is a society where books are
illegal and firemen burn houses instead of putting them out. Also the firemen own a eight legged
mechanical dog that tracks down people who break the law. The Veldt is about this family who relies
on a room called the nursery that does everything for them. The parents were trying to shut down the
nursery but, the kids did not want that. These books have many similar themes like dystopian societies
and future technology diminishing people s lives.
One similar theme between The Veldt and Fahrenheit 451 is that they both are a dystopian society. In
both these books the societies have crime everywhere. In The Veldt the kids murdered their own
parents through the nursery. The kids tricked their parents into the nursery where they were
surrounded by hungry lions and the kids locked their parents inside to get eaten (Bradbury 10).

The Reality Of The Beholder From The Ancient Dialogues...
What is Reality? I plan on discussing each section of this essay; however, they do coincide with each
other in the topic. I will try to explain my reasoning on how they would question relates to one
another. First, what is the difference between appearance and reality? What is the reality of being in a
new place, instead of being in a society of other people around you? Does one person think they can
another s perception of their world? Does everything lead to good, and what is good in the eye of the

Another way of thinking of reality and appearance is the theory of idealism. Idealism is only things
that really exist are our minds and their ideas. An Irish Bishop named George Berkeley view of
idealism is ...though it were possible that solid, figured, moveable substances may exist without the
mind... yet how [could we] know this? Either we must know it by sense or by reason. (Rachels
Rachels, 2012, p. 128). Berkeley also goes to mention that our senses comes our knowledge of
sensations and ideas that come from the mind, and our reason is for us to believe in the existence of
physical objects that is a necessary connection between the physical world and our ideas. Another
approach is direct versus indirect realism, which deals with the perception of our reality or mental
state. Direct idealism deals with common sense and with the facts of things; however, indirect
idealism is the opposite of which it holds the idea of perception of something with our idea of an
object that we are aware of. Now, how is reflecting with Plato s story of the Allegory of the Cave, and
reality and appearance the same? In the story of the Allegory of the Cave, goes with the following
understanding of the Cave. The cave is a world where prisoners live chained to the ground, and the
captors cast shadows on the wall and these shadows construct reality for the prisoners. One of the

|Price | |2011 |$681,300.87 |61,240 |$29,135.00 |$10.00 | |2012 |$699,299.67 |62710 |$29,362.00
|$10.03 | |2013 |$717,875.11 |64215 |$29,591.00 |$10.06 | |2014 |$737,043.10 |65756 |$29,822.00
|$10.09 | I based the population growth assumption by taking the 2011 estimation from the Census
Bureau, which was 2.4% increase from 2010, and applied to each year (Census Bureau, 2012). For the
median household income, I applied .78% increase for each year based on the average growth from
2006 to 2010. For 2011, I left the price of pizza the same and increase by .3% thereafter. The price of
pizza over the years has not grown in comparison to population and income, however; I felt that the
price should increase given basic inflation. Based on the forecasting demand, determine whether
Dominos should establish a

Amy Tan Two Kinds Summary
Two parts of a whole
The story Two Kinds By Amy Tan was about a young Chinese girl and her mother who had just
moved to the United States. The mother had moved to America because she had lost everything her
husband, mom, dad, and children. Even in spite of all this loss she never looked back and never
regretted her decision. One day Ni kan s mother had the idea of Ni kan becoming a child prodigy
because to Ni kan s mother you could do anything in America.
Ni kan s mother had decided that Ni kan would become a Chinese Shirley Temple so she hadni Kahn
watch Shirley Temple like training videos and she even took Ni kan to get her hair styled although that
turned out terribly that did not stop Ni kan s mother. The next idea Ni kan s ... Show more content on

The story is very relatable for me. For example Ni kan s mother pushed Ni kan to do her best and
become a prodigy even though Ni kan was trying and Ni kan s mother didn t even ask Ni kan what she
wanted to do my mother does the same thing. She pushes me to play an instrument ones that she
wishes she had played when she was in high school. First it was piano but I lost interest after learning
a part of Handel s The Royal Fireworks because all I ever learned was classical music and I wanted to
learn music that I listened to and the things that I loved. After that idea failed my mom got me singing
lessons. That idea is still going strong. Now I am also playing guitar but it is such a struggle because I
am trying to do self teaching and it is very difficult when you have to watch others online but you can
t ask question, can t be shown in person what you re doing wrong and the list goes on and my mom
doesn t understand and so she thinks that I don t want to do it or I am not trying hard enough like Ni
kan s mom. My parents even went as far as to buy me a Martin guitar and I haven t touched it for a
couple of months now. Just like Ni kan got a piano and hardly touched it. I feel like Ni kan s mother
was trying to live out her dreams through her daughter just as I feel like my mother is trying to live her
dreams out through me. When in reality I realize that my mom just wants the best for me and wants
me to excel in everything I put my

Introduction
Many people today have their thoughts on how the Earth was created. Christians take a biblical
perspective of how the universe was created by a creator. One thought that Christians believe is that
God created the earth and accomplished this in six days and rested on the seventh day. This is the
model of how a week is set up and the model that we currently follow. Jon W. Green states though
differences of opinion exist for various doctrinal issues within Christianity, few are more divisive than
controversies surrounding the days of creation and the age of the Earth. As stated previously many
people have thoughts and are curious as to how the Earth itself came into existence. When it comes to
the scientific community there ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
(Mortenson, 2011) Young Earth Creationist believe in the idea of the Hebrew word Yom. (Morris,
2011) This word translates to mean a literal day and is used in Genesis to describe each day of
creation. We as Christians must take the Bible as true, this being the whole bible including the Old
Testament. In regards to the age of the Earth, young earth creationist take Genesis 5 as a genealogy of
the Earth. The genealogies of Genesis 5 as well as 11 give people an idea of the years and happenings
from Adam to Abraham. Scholars can mostly agree that Abraham lived about 2000 BC. All of these
facts then set the date of creation at approximately 6000 years ago. (Mortenson, 2011)
Old Earth View
In response to the young earth six day creation of the Earth idea, secular scientist have developed the
idea of the Big Bang theory. According to the big bang theory, the universe began by expanding from
a minuscule volume that possessed extremely high density as well as extreme temperatures. Initially
the universe was significantly smaller than a pore on your skin. (Takahashi, 2000 ) It is thought that
this happened about 10 20 billion years ago. According to Yuki D. Takahasi (2000) in his article Big
Bang: How did the Universe begin? He states 3 main observations that point to truth in the Big Bang
Theory. Number one is astronomers have found that the universe continues to expand which means
that the

  • 2. Looking After Skellig Characters David Almond has included many recurring themes throughout the book Skellig. In the novel, there is a strong, obvious friendship between Michael, Mina and Skellig. There is a lot of change that the characters must deal with and their friends and family are there to help support them. The theme death reoccurs throughout the novel which gives the book a deeper meaning. There is a strong and obvious friendship between Michael, Mina and Skellig. Although they do not take up arms and fight, Chryseis, Briseis, Helen, and Andromache all impact both the outcome of the war as well as the lives and reputations of those in it. Chryseis, the first woman to be mentioned in the Iliad, is the one who inadvertently sets off a chain of events that would ultimately determine the outcome of the war. Because Agamemnon refused to return her to her father when asked, despite all of his men agreeing that he should, Apollo sent down a plague to ravage the Greeks (1: 11 55). When Agamemnon finally agrees to give her back to her father, he only does so on the condition that Briseis, Achilles woman, be given to him to make up for his loss (1: 178 185). Chryseis is part of the gera of Agamemnon, and because one s rewards should equal one s excellence (deserved or not), Agamemnon is not willing to let her go without some sort of compensation. Briseis, the woman taken by Achilles as his prize after the sacking of Thebes, is the catalyst for Achille s rage (1: 351 380). • 25. The Movie Jaws Was Written By Peter Benchley And Directed... The movie Jaws was written by Peter Benchley and directed by Steven Spielberg. It created mass chaos in an unknowing world. In Francis s article The State of Sharks, 40 Years After Jaws, he drives into the negative and positive effects of Jaws on shark populations. He mostly focuses on Australia and the United States. Before the movie was released, little was known about sharks. People were oblivious to the danger, but swimming was not a huge recreational activity. Early sailors wrote journals about deep sea monsters looming in the darkness, but the public dismissed these tales as pure folklore (Francis). After the movie was released, the public was terrified and since little was known about sharks, the media and public accepted the image provided from Jaws. The image of sharks as rogue man eaters made fishermen rush to the shore to go shark hunting. Sharks were used as game in competitions, prizes for fishermen trying to protect the shores, and their fins were cut off for shark fin soup, common in Asia for traditional events (Francis). The fear of sharks was heavily influenced by the press who, to sell more copies, used over dramatic stories and abstract wording to scare people. As best said by The Sydney Morning Herald fear sells. • 27. `` Repent, Harlequin, By Harlan Ellison Harlan Ellison uses strong imagery in his short story Repent, Harlequin! said the Ticktockman to better develop the characters and setting. The personalities of both the Harlequin and the Ticktockman are developed through Ellison s imagery of their physical forms and of their personas. The dull setting of the short story is created through the author s imagery of machinery, particularly clockwork, and Mondrian arrangements. Ellison s use of imagery allows the reader to pull from this story deeper, more significant meaning than what appears on the surface. According to White, the disruptive and rebellious Harlequin is an anomaly: the only human being distinguishable from machines (White, 1). In order to clearly establish the Harlequin as the only individual within his society, Ellison employs the use of strong imagery to cause him to stand out among the rest of the characters. One way that Ellison does this is using rather outlandish language to describe the Harlequin. Aside from being a personality, which in and of itself is outrageous to the System, the Harlequin is also a laughing, irresponsible japer of jabberwocky and jive (953, 955). This imagery of a jester or a jokester creates the idea that the Harlequin is merely a nuisance to his society rather than a dangerous rebellious force. When the Harlequin is flying the air boat that he uses to drop jelly beans on to the metronomic Timkin workers, he is not described as merely flying this boat over the people ... For me, if you did not grow up here, you cannot appreciate living here. People who think like that, people who want Treme transformed, could go anywhere and dismantle what was there and build what they wanted. For outsiders, the most important thing here is the building. Moreover, most of these social issues are perpetuated through the people s strive for superiority. For instance, racism keeps on escalating due to the fact that some races want to prove their dominance over the rest. Consequently, the parties involved in such scenarios end up being either the victim or perpetrator. Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In point of fact, women have to endure and overcome a lot of obstacles so as to achieve what men have managed to without struggle. Inequality is not only exhibited through the roles allocated to them, but also in payment, an act which has led to the emanation of the gender wage gap. These issues have also escalated in religion. Religiously inspired gender inequality is usually manifested through the privileges and opportunities which are granted based on an individual s gender. Specifically, gender inequality has been made apparent in religion through the gendered institutions, gendered identities, gendered interactions, and gender ideologies. Patriarchal church leaderships are clear signs of how deep gender inequality has been integrated into religion (Shepard 413). Women are given less leadership roles compared to men, and sometimes are not even considered at all in any decision making process. Such acts are clear indicators of how gender inequality is negatively affecting the society. Actually, it is quite saddening that even the most respected aspects of the society (such as religion) are participating in these tainted acts. Religion is meant to enforce religious based norms and morals, and in fact, it should be rock steady in the fight against gender equality. Thus, as per Gilman s analysis, the human society in general has been tarnished through gender related issues. Most women ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 32. Rhetorical Analysis Of Virginia Woolf Rhetorical Analysis Essay Woolf Alanna Kellam 1B In her memoir, Virginia Woolf discusses a valuable lesson learned during her childhood fishing trips in Cornwall, England. To convey the significance of past moments, Woolf incorporates detailed figurative language and a variety of syntax into her writing. Woolf communicates an appreciative tone of the past to the audience, emphasizing its lasting impact on her life. Woolf organizes her writing using various forms of syntax which contributes to the significance of the memory. The author s portrayal of the setting is recounted with long, detailed sentences in order to illustrate its importance. The excitement of fishing is depicted as Woolf retells Sometimes the lines would be handed to us; baited by gobbets cut from fish; and the line thrilled in one s fingers as the boat tossed and shot through the water (12 15). The author includes multiple semicolons not only to extend the sentence, but to also present similar ideas in a like structure. Notably, the author conveys tactile imagery to support the lengthy sentences with compelling details. The tossing of the boat and the touch of the fishing line embodies the exciting chaos the author had felt in the past. As a result, readers are then able to understand the specific attributes of Woolf s memory that made the experience significant. Additionally, Woolf further develops the impact of her excitement as she describes ...and then how can I convey the excitement? there was a little leaping tug... (15 17). Again, lengthy sentence structure helps to connect the images of her memory. The dashes communicate to readers a sense of the author s internal thoughts, as if she was writing all that was on her mind. The dashes outline changes in the flow of the language, so that readers can note clearly defined shifts. They also symbolize the vividness of her memories, therefore the significance of the events in her situation. Unique from the majority of the sentences, Woolf includes declarative structure as she states It was a perfect lesson (25). The line stands out to the readers, amongst the other sentences, because of its length, which is intended to convey an idea directly. The ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Either we must know it by sense or by reason. (Rachels Rachels, 2012, p. 128).
