1) Amoebic abscess is a complication of amoebic dysentery caused by the protozoa Entamoeba histolytica entering the liver via the portal vein.
2) Within the liver, the protozoa causes thrombosis, infarction and cytolytic activity resulting in the formation of a large, viscous abscess that often appears reddish-brown in color.
3) Symptoms include fever, abdominal pain localized to the liver, and tender hepatomegaly. Diagnosis is confirmed by abscess aspiration which reveals anchovy sauce-like pus.
