What Is Edward R. Murrow Reporting Style
Edward R. Murrow s Reporting Style in Modern America
Edward R. Murrow s reporting style, established in both radio and television, has had a profound and
lasting effect on broadcast journalism and the newscast format. In addition to developments like the
news round up, one major innovation of Murrow s continues to play a crucial role in news reporting,
particularly of the 2016 election, and that is the compilation and employment of previous media
products, such as radio and television recordings, and news publications, in order to conceptualize,
analyze, and lampoon a contemporary political figure, as exemplified by Murrow s report on Joseph
McCarthy. The preservation of this reporting style throughout media s transitions, television s in
particular, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Christopher Columbus Day Analysis
In 1492, Columbus sailed the ocean blue. That is the rhyme that many of us probably memorized
when first learning about Christopher Columbus as children. Of course, as kids, we wouldn t have
understood all of the events that occurred because of Christopher Columbus, only being able to
maintain the idea that he discovered America, later to grow up and be hit with the realization of the
fact that more happened than we were initially taught. Christopher Columbus, as we later learned, did
not discover America. The America s Native people were the Native Americans, hence their name. As
we grew a little older and started to reach our teen years, we would learn about how Christopher
Columbus took the natives as slaves, creating a system in which gold would be collected for
Columbus and Spain s profit, and several brutalities would be committed if orders were not obeyed or

However, if you analyze the given information, there s missing narrative of the story. The first quote,
fails to mention that for all of Columbus s life, he didn t know he was in the Bahamas, he believed he
had found Asia, and came upon the Indian people, which is where the term Indian for native
Americans came from. Secondly, the second quote, discusses in a rather discreet way how Columbus
changed the course of history. This is true, he began slavery and colonization, which were both huge
periods of time in history. The quote attempts to use the logic that if someone changes history, they
become a good man or woman, however completely disregarding the history the figure made, dark or
not. This, is what Columbus day does, as stated in the first paragraph, celebrating the rights and
victories, and overlooking the wrongs and bloodshed. The following quote is an example of
disregarded violence done by Columbus and his

Fossil Fuels In The US
Fossil fuels such as oil, coal, and natural gas provide the U.S. with over 80 percent of its energy
supply (McNerney Cheek, 2012). Fossil fuels, formed from organic materials over the course of many
centuries, have fueled the global and U.S. economic development for the past two centuries.
Nonetheless, fossil fuels are finite resources that cause irreversible harm to the environment. Scientists
consider them nonrenewable forms of energy since they take hundreds of years to form. According to
Rand (2010), fossil fuels were responsible for 79 percent of the greenhouse emissions in 2010. Poor
efficiency practices and higher energy demands have increased the usage of fossil fuels, and it is now
important to find substitute means of generating ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Energy efficiency has a variety of benefits: lowering cost on both household and economical levels,
reducing demand for energy imports, and fewer greenhouse emissions. Although renewable energy
technologies help to accomplish these objectives of reducing the utilization of fossil fuels, the
cheapest, and often most immediate, is improving energy efficiency. There are considerable
opportunities for improving the efficiency in almost all sectors of the economy, whether it is transport,
energy generation, buildings, or industry. Most typical cars consume fossil fuels. Choosing alternative
forms of transport other than running a personal car saves on the fossil fuel. Alternative forms of
transport in America include train, subway system, or bus. Moreover, taking public transport does not
only save on fossil fuels but it also allows one to concentrate on other things such as reading.
Additionally, the best way of being independent of fossil fuels is driving less. Bicycle riding or
walking reduces the utilization of fossil fuels; it is cheap, good for the environmental, and

The Effects Of Adhd On The Life Of An Individual
Using your textbook and the article above, construct 2 8 sentence paragraphs summarizing what you
read.
In the article entitled, The effects of ADHD on the life of an individual, their family, and community
from preschool to adult life , provided by the Archives of Disease in Childhood, talks about the
individual stages of a person suffering from ADHD. The stages beginning from childhood and
continue on to adolescence and lastly adult life. Every stage is very different from the next. As
children in preschool, in this age group there is often unusually poor intensity of play and excessive
motor restlessness. So they lack being playful but they excessively talk maybe interrupting the teacher
or someone that is an authority figure. Their behavior opposes those of societal norms like breaking
the rules in a classroom. Their social skills lack as they keep to themselves so not much interaction
with others. It is important that when teachers notice a difference in the student s behavior to
immediately inform the parents that way parents can be more so involved with the child. Parents
might encounter huge amounts of stress even strain on their marriage when finding out about their
child, but with the help of teachers and outside sources parents will be better able to meet the demands
of the child. In the first years of schooling children with normal learning abilities will surpass those
with ADHD, but if the teacher is actively involved with those students with ADHD (338) they

Analysis Of Emily Dickinson s My Life Had Stood-A Loaded Gun
In Emily Dickinson, My Life had stood A Loaded gun , we as the reader see how a female protagonist
stand s up for herself in defense of the male antagonist. However, in two contrasting literary theory s
we see a difference of opinion. The first literary theory is by Sarah Ahmed and the theory is displayed
in her writing called, Living a Feminist Life. Throughout her work she displays the importance for
feminism in todays world and how one should separate themselves if necessary. The second work that
we have is by Donna Haraway called A Cyborg Manifesto, the main idea throughout the work is
contrasting with Ahmed in the importance for unification. The unification the Haraway uses is by
explaining cyborgs and how humans would react with them, but more importantly how unification of
humans and machines effects us. Throughout the essay Haraway and Ahmed s theory s will be
explained and the differences shown. In Dickinson s novel the first stanza shows how the woman is
being passed by without having any voice, it specifically states, My Life had stood a Loaded Gun In
Corners till a Day The Owner passed identified And carried Me away . In the first stanza it is clear
how the woman is referring to herself as a gun that is of no use to her owner . The owner is
presumably a man and has minimal use for her as someone would for a gun. With that being said a
gun is a weapon built with an immense power and it is ofter overlooked how powerful it is. The same

Southern Somalia Research Paper
Somalia was colonized by many different countries. It was colonized by Britain, France, Egypt,
Ethiopia, and Italy. Egypt had taken over the coast in 1875. Britain colonized it in 1887. They did this
because they wanted to guard the Suez canal. France took over a part of Somalia because they didn t
get any land in Egypt. In the early 1900 s, Italy gained control of Southern Somalia. They had control
of Southern Somalia until July 1st, 1960 when they gained their own independence. Life during these
colonial times was bad in some places but not all. They were treated unfairly in most places and their
individual culture was not given respect. This was mainly due to Europe wanting it only for the
resources they would get. Italy treated them very well and fairly for a while until they decided to make
the natives adjust to Italian law. They treated them well at first because they were trying not to disturb
the colonies. The colonial government in the British Somaliland was not liked by the people. There
were many uprisings and this made the British abandon the interior of Somalia and they went for the
coasts instead. When they did this, Italy saw an opportunity to take control over the interior. After
World War 2, Somalia was given to the United Nations to become a UN trust territory. They ... Show

The Power of Nathaniel Hawthorne Essay
The Power of Nathaniel Hawthorne
New England in the early 1800 s, before the Civil War, was a place teeming with artists, intellectuals,
and reformers of every sort. Many of America s great literary geniuses came out of this era; and
among the greatest of these was Nathaniel Hawthorne. He was, as Q. D. Leavis put it, the critic and
interpreter of American cultural history and thereby the finder and creator of a literary tradition (Kaul
27), and, a sociological novelist in effect, employing a poetic technique which communicates instead
of stating his findings (Kaul 28). In his stories, Hawthorne pointed out many characteristics of
American society and of human nature, and brought about a new tradition in American literature. ...

They did so again the next summer, and in 1818 became, in Elizabeth s words, permanent residents of
Raymond (Van Doren 11). In the Maine wilderness, Nathaniel, who because of his injury had become
gloomy and listless with the belief that he would never be active again, learned once more to have a
good time. His foot had gradually healed, and the woods of Raymond were a place for him to run free
and recuperate from the town life that had cramped him. He enjoyed the time in Raymond thoroughly,
and hated to leave when, in 1819, his mother decided it was time for him to prepare for the rest of his
life. Nathaniel was sent back to Salem, to live once more with his Manning relatives while he was
being tutored by Benjamin Oliver in preparation for college.
For admission to Bowdoin College, he had to learn to write Latin grammatically, and to be well versed
in Geography, in Walsh s Arithmetic, Cicero s Select Orations, the Bucolics, Georgics, and the Aeneid
of Virgil, Sallust, the Greek Testament, and the Collectanea Graeca Minora (Van Doren 16). This was
accomplished by the fall of 1821, and then he entered Bowdoin College in Maine. During his years
there he made many friends, two of which were to remain his closest friends throughout his life:
Franklin Pierce, later to be President; and Horatio Bridge. Hawthorne was not an outstanding student.
He had never liked school, which in those days was

Country Songs Research Paper
Country music or country songs is a popular genre of American music that mainly evolved in the
Southern part of the country. Widely considered as American folk music, these songs are based on the
local customs and traditions. As per the experts of western music, the country songs also have a touch
of western music, as many musical effects of western music or songs are noticed in these songs as
well. However, most of these experts agree to the point that country songs often consist of dance tunes
and ballads that make them very popular among the dancers as well.
It is very true that most of the dance training schools or institutions make a wide use of these songs for
training their aspiring students. As far as popularity of these songs

On July 23, 1967, a massive riot began in Detroit because a rumor was spread that police used

many questions running through her mind, and she didn t know where to start. Then finally her
Mother started for her. Ra, we don t know a lot about mating with a Vampire, because every time one

Rae looked at the eldest kneeling in front of her and asked. So what exactly do you know about them?
Rae could not even bring herself to say the word VAMPIRE.
The eldest Rae told her, We know they are blood drinking creatures. Some of the human stories

they will burst into flames. It s because Saint Valentine didn t want people to discover what he was

5. Process of network formation
Inter organizational network, as a distinct from personal network of entrepreneurs have been discussed
by O donell (2001). The factors those are responsible for the process of Inter organizational network
have been divided into Reciprocity, Legitimacy, Stability and Resources, according to Kimberly
(2005).
i) Among the four factors, Reciprocity is considered as necessary condition. The other three factors are
facilitators in the network formation process. The might be present at the time of network formation or
they can be developed in the early stages of network formation.
The main objective of the Inter organizational network is the accomplishment of collective goals for
the participating organizations. The goals require inputs or contributions from other organizations, as
no single organization is capable of achieving the goals on its own. The organizations, connected
through network, derive benefits from other organizations structures. The benefit derived from joining
an organization is must also be greater than the cost involved. Otherwise, a single organization does
not derive any incentive from joining inter organization network, choosing over individual goals and
objectives.
ii) Legitimacy is the first of the three facilitating factors. It is essential to

Heritage Differences In Everyday Use By Alice Walker
Heritage Differences
In the short story Everyday Use , by Alice Walker she represents the conflicts and struggles of the
African American culture in rural Georgia around the early 1970 s. Alice Walker introduced 4 main
characters; Mama and her two daughters, Maggie and Dee as well as Dee s boyfriend Hakim a barber.
Mama is the narrator of the story, she is both a mother and father to her daughters as she is uneducated
but worked years of physical labor and lives in poverty. Maggie is the youngest daughter who s shy
and lives with Mama, she lacks confidence and is unable to be open nor make eye contact with the
people talking to her. Mama s older daughter, Dee who renamed herself as Wangero Leewanika
Kemanjo is educated, determined, and confident. She declares that she is the one who is looking at the
important aspects of her family history and Mama and Maggie aren t aware of it. Everyday Use carries
many different meanings that highlight the issue of how things are used on an everyday basis.
Understanding their family African heritage was a big concept for Dee. As Mama and Dee had two
different opinions about heritage which caused conflict about whom should keep the quilts from
Maggie and Dee. Everyday Use is a focus on the bonds women have between different generations
and legacies for example, the Quilts. Mama and Maggie see a different usefulness to the quilts
compared to Dee, the quits represent matters such as reading, race and class, among others.
Quilting in Everyday Use symbolizes family heritage. They are a history of papers in fabric that vary
over generations. They symbolize the family s history of pride, poverty and struggle. Mama and Dee
have different perspectives on what the quilts mean to the family heritage. As to Mama, the quilts have
a special significance; when she goes to touch them, she is feeling the people who represented them,
the ones who worked on them in her family. It represents the bond between women of different
generations in their family. The quilts to Mama don t only represent her understanding of heritage but
also shows how she s connected to them with her family. I took it for a moment in my hands. You didn

Significance Of The Bystander Effect In Elie Wiesel s Night
In the year of 1964, a woman named Kitty Genovese was murdered in plain sight of her on looking
New York City neighbors, however, none of them attempted to help or notify the authorities. This
event gave rise to the term Genovese Effect otherwise known as the Bystander Effect . The name
refers to the phenomenon that occurs when large groups of people don t take the responsibility of
helping in a dire situation. Unsurprisingly, when reading the book Night , by Elie Wiesel, many
readers see a direct correlation between the story and the bystander effect. Towards the beginning of
Night , we see the first instance of the bystander effect shown when nobody living in Sighet does
anything to heed Moishe s warnings. This closely resembles a study done by SoulPancake in which
people were to watch a product presentation, (in this case about a tent), the catch being that everyone
in the room except for the test subject knew that the presenter would purposely fail to assemble the
product. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In contrast to this, the smallest group consisting of only one person, (the test subject), had an average
time for help to be given of only three minutes and nineteen seconds. Moishe s predicament in the
book mimics the study as nobody in the large population was willing to lend a hand, (or believe in),
the struggling person. Second, the bystander effect is seen in Night when all the Jewish people of
Sighet were confined to a ghetto. According to Jason Marsh and Dacher Keltner, a study was
performed in the wake of the murder of Genovese in which differently sized groups of people would
communicate to each other via an intercom. In this experiment however, there was a single person
helping with the study who would pretend to have a seizure while conversing with other participants.

Natural Hazards In California
Natural hazards are different natural phenomena that disrupt the usual live of a population, destroy and
demolish objects of material value. They often have a negative effect on nature, and can happen
anywhere in the world. Many different types of natural hazards exist; for example, earth quakes,
landslides, floods, snow drifts, hurricanes, droughts, volcano eruptions, storms, etc. Natural hazards
can happen independently or can be related to each other. If there is an earthquake, it can lead to a
tsunami or massive fires. Some of them happen as a result of mankind s doings; construction work,
depending on the location, can cause snow drifts, or massive fires.

California is the state with the most natural hazards. As an example, the San Andreas fault created the

World War I Gained Its Label
World War I was, simply put, a war like no other. It was the first total war the world had experienced
and it revolutionized our idea of war and what it entailed. World War I eventually coined the nickname
the war to end all wars ; which we now find to be ironic because there have been plenty of wars since.
At the time, however, it was believed that society would be rebirthed by the war and it would be
changed to a more perfect form. There would be no sense in war anymore because humanity would
finally be ideal. Yet when we examine the casualties and destruction post war, they add up to a horrific
amount. During this era, it seemed nearly impossible for war to continue, in consideration to the
welfare of humanity. Still though, it only ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Sometimes, terrible things have to happen so necessary changes can take place. In contrast to
President Wilson s more rational ideals, Winston Churchill, an allied leader, argued this. He claimed
that, We are not meant to find peace in this world, and that war often brought progress and necessary
revolutions for the betterment of society. Some believed it would erase the class systems and return
the mannerly values of society. Others believed it would overthrow the oppressing sense of
dictatorship and democracy would prevail. Colonials believed that maybe the Europeans would finally
grant them independence.
Although war brings death and destruction, the world could be worse without it. Sometimes there s a
lot to lose but even more to gain. Even Emile Zola, a person notorious for being a leftist, found that, it
is only the warlike nations that have prospered. A nation dies as soon as it disarms. War is the school
of discipline, sacrifice, and courage. The Great War could not be the war to end all wars because
history repeats itself. Just as World War I was seemingly bound to happen, so is every other war. An
event leads to another event, which will eventually lead to war. Life seems to be a never ending cycle
of major historical events and their repercussions. Nothing would ever end war because the world
doesn t know how to function without it.
World War I presented a war that was more industrial than those that had preceded it. It

Airline Deregulation
On October 24, 1978, President Carter signed into law the Airline Deregulation Act. The purpose of
the law was to effectively get the federal government out of the airline business. By allowing the
airlines to compete for their customers travel dollars, was the thinking, that fares would drop and an
increased number of routes would spring up.
Expected Results
The results of airline deregulation speak for themselves. Since the government got out of the airline
business, not only has there been a drop in prices and an increase in routes, there has also been a
remarkable increase in airline service and safety. Airline deregulation should be seen as the crowning
jewel of a federal de regulatory emphasis. Prices are down: Airline ... Show more content on

But the legislation winding its way through the legislative maze that is Congress does anything but
move towards increased privatization. S. 1331, sponsored by Senator John McCain (R AZ), would
make it more difficult for large carriers to offer low fares. The justification for this action it to make
entry into the market easier, and therefore increase competitiveness within the industry. But while this
may enable small airlines to enter markets, it essentially creates an affirmative action program for
corporations that are inefficient by reserving runway space for these airlines.
The only good language in the Senate bill is that which would eliminate perimeter restrictions on
Washington s Ronald Reagan Airport. This would kill the rule that prevents flights to and from
National from more than 1250 miles away. While this may just be a measure so that Congressmen
won t have to drive to the out of town Dulles Airport in Virginia, it is a good precedent to set for other
airports and the elimination of market restrictions.
The House has a companion bill, H.R. 2748, which does not go as far as the Senate bill in its
regulatory language. But Speaker Newt Gingrich (R GA) has predicted that Congress will pass some
airline bill this term. A senior aide for a Republican on the House Transportation and Infrastructure
Committee said, I don t know if the two sides will come together this year.

observed within a study, a conclusion was made which noted that people in large part expect to
possess privacy but contrary to this belief do not perceive their privacy as being upheld (Smith,
Madden, and Barton). People yearn for privacy but regardless of this desire, individuals continue to
deal with the reality that this expectation will not be met. Hopefully as time continues to pass, the
discord between the expectation and perception of privacy will become more harmonious, but until
then society should strive to tack back the right that all humans share, to lead and govern their own

Mega Churches Stereotypes
Scanning the internet the other day was this derogatory article concerning mega churches stereotyped
as big business, assessing how thousands of people give huge amounts of money. The article failed to
mention how God blesses His people with such huge amounts of money in order for them to return
huge amounts of money. Churches need to be big and rich for help people, and when people are
helped the church cannot be big enough. The worlds system in its late stages of falling apart will
always perpetuate itself in that direction. We have allowed ourselves to be drawn into such a darkened
state of confusion we cannot even see the light of day. The world we live in is without fear and
understanding of consequences in its manufactured sins, we are ... Show more content on

She saw an idiot stomping on a US Flag and attempting to burn it and took it away from him and was
holding it dear to her heart when the police came and forcibly took it away from her and gave it back

begun to be made in court rooms. Courts were designed to interpret the law. Twenty five years ago a
man that was a member of the Communist party burned the American flag and when he was arrested
he took the case along with the ACLU to the Supreme Court who made a 5 to 4 decision to repeal the
law and declared it as free speech saying that it did not cause or threaten to cause a breach of peace.
Congress made seven attempts to overrule the Supreme Court decision regarding the burning of the
American flag by passing a constitutional amendment, but was unable to gather the required two
thirds majority. In 1994 it made it through a Republican Congress with the House majority, but the
Democratic Senate shot it down. Even President George H Bush Sr. dishonored us by agreeing with
the court s decision. After the San Francisco 49ers allowed quarterback Colin Kaepernick to take a

Ludwig Van Beethoven s Life Of Ludwig Van Beethoven
Ludwig van Beethoven was a German pianist and composer who is widely considered to be the
greatest of all time, whose compositions consisted combinations of vocals and a vast amount of
instruments. Beethoven was born in Bonn,Germany in 1770. He was a crucial figure in the world of
music connecting the Classical and Romantic ages of Western Music. The life of Beethoven was full
of struggle especially because of his deafness, and most of his important works were composed during
the last ten years of his life. He died at the age of 56. What I will be going over is his background and
his early life. Next I will be talking about his musical training that he went under throughout his life.
Lastly, I will be finishing it off about his deafness and how he had died. Johann van and Maria
Magdalena Beethoven had five children of which only three survived.Beethoven was the first child to
survive. The other two siblings who had also survived were Casper and Nikolaus. Later in his life
these two will have one of the greatest impact on Beethoven s life. Beethoven father was a mediocre
court singer even though he was more known for his alcholism. In contrast,Beethoven grandfather was
Kapellmeister Ludwig van Beethoven. Beethoven was then subjected to brutal training by his father,
who had hoiped that he would become a prodigy like Mozart. It is also said that his father often pulled
him out of bed in the middle of the night and ordered to perform for his father companions, and if he

Houses Of Refuge Summary
Identifications:
1. Houses of Refuge, first begun in New York in 1825, were institutions created exclusively for poor,
orphaned, criminal, incorrigible and/or wayward youth in America (McNamara 2014: p. 6). Their
founding principles caring for and housing large numbers of youth as part of one umbrella institution
mark the beginnings of today s juvenile justice system because Houses of Refuge were the first to
institutionalize juvenile delinquents and status offenders.
2. In his book, Seduction of the Innocent, Dr. Frederic Wertham maintained that comics were leading
to an increase in juvenile crime rates in the 1950s, which was widely accepted as truth by the public
although the evidence was unfounded (Class Notes 1/28/2016). Wertham s ... Show more content on

After the passage of the Juvenile Justice Delinquency and Prevention Act of 1974, status offenders
were deinstitutionalized, meaning they were no longer allowed to be imprisoned with juveniles who
had committed crimes. Deinstitutionalization legally distinguished status offenders from juvenile
delinquents in both name and practice. Supporters of the act maintained that status offenders would
not be stigmatized as juvenile delinquents are, helping to reduce the effect of self fulfilling prophecy
on status offenders. Those against the act claimed that incarcerating status offenders prevents more
serious crimes and removes the possibility of status offenders having to live on the streets. Through
bootstrapping, judges re lable status offenders as delinquents by holding them in contempt of court
after they runaway again, violating a direct court order. Judges also circumvent the law by sending
status offenders to mental hospitals, treatment facilities or residential programs because even though it
removes them from their homes, it does not violate JJDPA (McNamara 2014: p.

Powerful Women In Shakespeare s Othello
In Othello, Shakespeare introduces us to many strong male figures such as Othello, Michael Cassio,
Roderigo and Iago, but Shakespeare also created powerful women in this play as well. In fact, the
women in the play tend to take front and centering in a lot of scene, stealing moments. The moments
in particular would be the scenes towards the end of the play with Desdemona and Emili talking about
a wife s loyalty to her husband and how should she respond to him. Their beliefs in the play are put
into action in the final Act, and even though they both have completely different views on
relationships, they both follow their convictions. In act 4, scene 3 we see Desdemona ask I have heard

Medea Is Not A Bad Mother Essay
Society establishes a set of expectations by which males and females are expected to conduct
themselves. For example, a mother is expected to nurture her child, stay at home to take care of her
children, be patient, be kind, love unconditionally and to never get angry. If a mother does not live up
to these expectations established by society, then that mother is deemed a bad mother. Since a mother
gives birth to her children and nurtures them, a mother who kills her children is considered to be
unredeemably bad. Medea, in the play of the same name, kills her two sons and by societal standards,
she would be deemed a bad mother. Contrary to society s expectations of mothers, I will argue that
Medea is not a bad mother. I will do this by proving that: Medea defies the social conventions of
motherhood in three ways; she kills her children in order to protect them; and, that she rebels against
her husband s control and male domination by depriving him of his immortality by killing his sons and
ending his bloodline.
There are three ways in which Medea defies the social conventions of motherhood. Firstly, she does
this by not being a stay at home mother. Secondly, she demonstrates that she can be powerful as a
woman. Thirdly, she is unkind and gets angry. I will elaborate on each of these ways in the paragraphs
that follow.
The first way in which Medea challenges the social conventions of motherhood is by defying its
conventions. One of the attributes of a social definition

Murrow s reporting style, established in both radio and television, has had a profound and lasting effect on broadcast journalism and the newscast format. In addition to developments like the news round up, one major innovation of Murrow s continues to play a crucial role in news reporting, particularly of the 2016 election, and that is the compilation and employment of previous media products, such as radio and television recordings, and news publications, in order to conceptualize, analyze, and lampoon a contemporary political figure, as exemplified by Murrow s report on Joseph McCarthy. • 3. Christopher Columbus Day Analysis In 1492, Columbus sailed the ocean blue. That is the rhyme that many of us probably memorized when first learning about Christopher Columbus as children. Of course, as kids, we wouldn t have understood all of the events that occurred because of Christopher Columbus, only being able to maintain the idea that he discovered America, later to grow up and be hit with the realization of the fact that more happened than we were initially taught. Christopher Columbus, as we later learned, did not discover America. The America s Native people were the Native Americans, hence their name. As we grew a little older and started to reach our teen years, we would learn about how Christopher Columbus took the natives as slaves, creating a system in which gold would be collected for Columbus and Spain s profit, and several brutalities would be committed if orders were not obeyed or ... The first quote, fails to mention that for all of Columbus s life, he didn t know he was in the Bahamas, he believed he had found Asia, and came upon the Indian people, which is where the term Indian for native Americans came from. Secondly, the second quote, discusses in a rather discreet way how Columbus changed the course of history. This is true, he began slavery and colonization, which were both huge periods of time in history. The quote attempts to use the logic that if someone changes history, they become a good man or woman, however completely disregarding the history the figure made, dark or not. This, is what Columbus day does, as stated in the first paragraph, celebrating the rights and victories, and overlooking the wrongs and bloodshed. The following quote is an example of disregarded violence done by Columbus and his ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 4. Fossil Fuels In The US Fossil fuels such as oil, coal, and natural gas provide the U.S. with over 80 percent of its energy supply (McNerney Cheek, 2012). Fossil fuels, formed from organic materials over the course of many centuries, have fueled the global and U.S. economic development for the past two centuries. Nonetheless, fossil fuels are finite resources that cause irreversible harm to the environment. Scientists consider them nonrenewable forms of energy since they take hundreds of years to form. According to Rand (2010), fossil fuels were responsible for 79 percent of the greenhouse emissions in 2010. Poor efficiency practices and higher energy demands have increased the usage of fossil fuels, and it is now important to find substitute means of generating ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Energy efficiency has a variety of benefits: lowering cost on both household and economical levels, reducing demand for energy imports, and fewer greenhouse emissions. Although renewable energy technologies help to accomplish these objectives of reducing the utilization of fossil fuels, the cheapest, and often most immediate, is improving energy efficiency. There are considerable opportunities for improving the efficiency in almost all sectors of the economy, whether it is transport, energy generation, buildings, or industry. Most typical cars consume fossil fuels. Choosing alternative forms of transport other than running a personal car saves on the fossil fuel. Alternative forms of transport in America include train, subway system, or bus. Moreover, taking public transport does not only save on fossil fuels but it also allows one to concentrate on other things such as reading. Additionally, the best way of being independent of fossil fuels is driving less. Bicycle riding or walking reduces the utilization of fossil fuels; it is cheap, good for the environmental, and ... • 6. The Effects Of Adhd On The Life Of An Individual Using your textbook and the article above, construct 2 8 sentence paragraphs summarizing what you read. In the article entitled, The effects of ADHD on the life of an individual, their family, and community from preschool to adult life , provided by the Archives of Disease in Childhood, talks about the individual stages of a person suffering from ADHD. The stages beginning from childhood and continue on to adolescence and lastly adult life. Every stage is very different from the next. As children in preschool, in this age group there is often unusually poor intensity of play and excessive motor restlessness. So they lack being playful but they excessively talk maybe interrupting the teacher or someone that is an authority figure. Their behavior opposes those of societal norms like breaking the rules in a classroom. Their social skills lack as they keep to themselves so not much interaction with others. It is important that when teachers notice a difference in the student s behavior to immediately inform the parents that way parents can be more so involved with the child. Parents might encounter huge amounts of stress even strain on their marriage when finding out about their child, but with the help of teachers and outside sources parents will be better able to meet the demands of the child. In the first years of schooling children with normal learning abilities will surpass those with ADHD, but if the teacher is actively involved with those students with ADHD (338) they ... • 7. Analysis Of Emily Dickinson s My Life Had Stood-A Loaded Gun In Emily Dickinson, My Life had stood A Loaded gun , we as the reader see how a female protagonist stand s up for herself in defense of the male antagonist. However, in two contrasting literary theory s we see a difference of opinion. The first literary theory is by Sarah Ahmed and the theory is displayed in her writing called, Living a Feminist Life. Throughout her work she displays the importance for feminism in todays world and how one should separate themselves if necessary. The second work that we have is by Donna Haraway called A Cyborg Manifesto, the main idea throughout the work is contrasting with Ahmed in the importance for unification. The unification the Haraway uses is by explaining cyborgs and how humans would react with them, but more importantly how unification of humans and machines effects us. Throughout the essay Haraway and Ahmed s theory s will be explained and the differences shown. In Dickinson s novel the first stanza shows how the woman is being passed by without having any voice, it specifically states, My Life had stood a Loaded Gun In Corners till a Day The Owner passed identified And carried Me away . In the first stanza it is clear how the woman is referring to herself as a gun that is of no use to her owner . The owner is presumably a man and has minimal use for her as someone would for a gun. Britain colonized it in 1887. They did this because they wanted to guard the Suez canal. France took over a part of Somalia because they didn t get any land in Egypt. In the early 1900 s, Italy gained control of Southern Somalia. They had control of Southern Somalia until July 1st, 1960 when they gained their own independence. Life during these colonial times was bad in some places but not all. They were treated unfairly in most places and their individual culture was not given respect. This was mainly due to Europe wanting it only for the resources they would get. Italy treated them very well and fairly for a while until they decided to make the natives adjust to Italian law. They treated them well at first because they were trying not to disturb the colonies. The colonial government in the British Somaliland was not liked by the people. There were many uprisings and this made the British abandon the interior of Somalia and they went for the coasts instead. The Power of Nathaniel Hawthorne Essay The Power of Nathaniel Hawthorne New England in the early 1800 s, before the Civil War, was a place teeming with artists, intellectuals, and reformers of every sort. Many of America s great literary geniuses came out of this era; and among the greatest of these was Nathaniel Hawthorne. He was, as Q. D. Leavis put it, the critic and interpreter of American cultural history and thereby the finder and creator of a literary tradition (Kaul 27), and, a sociological novelist in effect, employing a poetic technique which communicates instead of stating his findings (Kaul 28). His foot had gradually healed, and the woods of Raymond were a place for him to run free and recuperate from the town life that had cramped him. He enjoyed the time in Raymond thoroughly, and hated to leave when, in 1819, his mother decided it was time for him to prepare for the rest of his life. Nathaniel was sent back to Salem, to live once more with his Manning relatives while he was being tutored by Benjamin Oliver in preparation for college. For admission to Bowdoin College, he had to learn to write Latin grammatically, and to be well versed in Geography, in Walsh s Arithmetic, Cicero s Select Orations, the Bucolics, Georgics, and the Aeneid of Virgil, Sallust, the Greek Testament, and the Collectanea Graeca Minora (Van Doren 16). This was accomplished by the fall of 1821, and then he entered Bowdoin College in Maine. The factors those are responsible for the process of Inter organizational network have been divided into Reciprocity, Legitimacy, Stability and Resources, according to Kimberly (2005). i) Among the four factors, Reciprocity is considered as necessary condition. The other three factors are facilitators in the network formation process. The might be present at the time of network formation or they can be developed in the early stages of network formation. The main objective of the Inter organizational network is the accomplishment of collective goals for the participating organizations. The goals require inputs or contributions from other organizations, as no single organization is capable of achieving the goals on its own. The organizations, connected through network, derive benefits from other organizations structures. The benefit derived from joining an organization is must also be greater than the cost involved. • 14. Heritage Differences In Everyday Use By Alice Walker Heritage Differences In the short story Everyday Use , by Alice Walker she represents the conflicts and struggles of the African American culture in rural Georgia around the early 1970 s. Alice Walker introduced 4 main characters; Mama and her two daughters, Maggie and Dee as well as Dee s boyfriend Hakim a barber. Mama is the narrator of the story, she is both a mother and father to her daughters as she is uneducated but worked years of physical labor and lives in poverty. Maggie is the youngest daughter who s shy and lives with Mama, she lacks confidence and is unable to be open nor make eye contact with the people talking to her. Mama s older daughter, Dee who renamed herself as Wangero Leewanika Kemanjo is educated, determined, and confident. She declares that she is the one who is looking at the important aspects of her family history and Mama and Maggie aren t aware of it. Everyday Use carries many different meanings that highlight the issue of how things are used on an everyday basis. Understanding their family African heritage was a big concept for Dee. As Mama and Dee had two different opinions about heritage which caused conflict about whom should keep the quilts from Maggie and Dee. Everyday Use is a focus on the bonds women have between different generations and legacies for example, the Quilts. Mama and Maggie see a different usefulness to the quilts compared to Dee, the quits represent matters such as reading, race and class, among others. Quilting in Everyday Use symbolizes family heritage. They are a history of papers in fabric that vary over generations. They symbolize the family s history of pride, poverty and struggle. Mama and Dee have different perspectives on what the quilts mean to the family heritage. As to Mama, the quilts have a special significance; when she goes to touch them, she is feeling the people who represented them, the ones who worked on them in her family. It represents the bond between women of different generations in their family. Significance Of The Bystander Effect In Elie Wiesel s Night In the year of 1964, a woman named Kitty Genovese was murdered in plain sight of her on looking New York City neighbors, however, none of them attempted to help or notify the authorities. This event gave rise to the term Genovese Effect otherwise known as the Bystander Effect . The name refers to the phenomenon that occurs when large groups of people don t take the responsibility of helping in a dire situation. Unsurprisingly, when reading the book Night , by Elie Wiesel, many readers see a direct correlation between the story and the bystander effect. Towards the beginning of Night , we see the first instance of the bystander effect shown when nobody living in Sighet does anything to heed Moishe s warnings. Second, the bystander effect is seen in Night when all the Jewish people of Sighet were confined to a ghetto. According to Jason Marsh and Dacher Keltner, a study was performed in the wake of the murder of Genovese in which differently sized groups of people would communicate to each other via an intercom. In this experiment however, there was a single person helping with the study who would pretend to have a seizure while conversing with other participants. The ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 19. World War I Gained Its Label World War I was, simply put, a war like no other. It was the first total war the world had experienced and it revolutionized our idea of war and what it entailed. World War I eventually coined the nickname the war to end all wars ; which we now find to be ironic because there have been plenty of wars since. At the time, however, it was believed that society would be rebirthed by the war and it would be changed to a more perfect form. There would be no sense in war anymore because humanity would finally be ideal. Yet when we examine the casualties and destruction post war, they add up to a horrific amount. During this era, it seemed nearly impossible for war to continue, in consideration to the welfare of humanity. Still though, it only ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Sometimes, terrible things have to happen so necessary changes can take place. In contrast to President Wilson s more rational ideals, Winston Churchill, an allied leader, argued this. He claimed that, We are not meant to find peace in this world, and that war often brought progress and necessary revolutions for the betterment of society. Some believed it would erase the class systems and return the mannerly values of society. Others believed it would overthrow the oppressing sense of dictatorship and democracy would prevail. Colonials believed that maybe the Europeans would finally grant them independence. Although war brings death and destruction, the world could be worse without it. Sometimes there s a lot to lose but even more to gain. Even Emile Zola, a person notorious for being a leftist, found that, it is only the warlike nations that have prospered. A nation dies as soon as it disarms. War is the school of discipline, sacrifice, and courage. The Great War could not be the war to end all wars because history repeats itself. Just as World War I was seemingly bound to happen, so is every other war. An event leads to another event, which will eventually lead to war. • 20. Airline Deregulation On October 24, 1978, President Carter signed into law the Airline Deregulation Act. The purpose of the law was to effectively get the federal government out of the airline business. By allowing the airlines to compete for their customers travel dollars, was the thinking, that fares would drop and an increased number of routes would spring up. Expected Results The results of airline deregulation speak for themselves. Since the government got out of the airline business, not only has there been a drop in prices and an increase in routes, there has also been a remarkable increase in airline service and safety. But the legislation winding its way through the legislative maze that is Congress does anything but move towards increased privatization. S. 1331, sponsored by Senator John McCain (R AZ), would make it more difficult for large carriers to offer low fares. The justification for this action it to make entry into the market easier, and therefore increase competitiveness within the industry. But while this may enable small airlines to enter markets, it essentially creates an affirmative action program for corporations that are inefficient by reserving runway space for these airlines. The only good language in the Senate bill is that which would eliminate perimeter restrictions on Washington s Ronald Reagan Airport. This would kill the rule that prevents flights to and from National from more than 1250 miles away. While this may just be a measure so that Congressmen won t have to drive to the out of town Dulles Airport in Virginia, it is a good precedent to set for other airports and the elimination of market restrictions. The House has a companion bill, H.R. 2748, which does not go as far as the Senate bill in its regulatory language. Due to the exponential development of technology over the past century, the personal lives of women, men, and children alike no longer are granted the luxury of possessing a private life. Houses of Refuge, first begun in New York in 1825, were institutions created exclusively for poor, orphaned, criminal, incorrigible and/or wayward youth in America (McNamara 2014: p. 6). Their founding principles caring for and housing large numbers of youth as part of one umbrella institution mark the beginnings of today s juvenile justice system because Houses of Refuge were the first to institutionalize juvenile delinquents and status offenders. 2. In his book, Seduction of the Innocent, Dr. Frederic Wertham maintained that comics were leading to an increase in juvenile crime rates in the 1950s, which was widely accepted as truth by the public although the evidence was unfounded (Class Notes 1/28/2016). Supporters of the act maintained that status offenders would not be stigmatized as juvenile delinquents are, helping to reduce the effect of self fulfilling prophecy on status offenders. Those against the act claimed that incarcerating status offenders prevents more serious crimes and removes the possibility of status offenders having to live on the streets. Through bootstrapping, judges re lable status offenders as delinquents by holding them in contempt of court after they runaway again, violating a direct court order. • 31. Medea Is Not A Bad Mother Essay Society establishes a set of expectations by which males and females are expected to conduct themselves. For example, a mother is expected to nurture her child, stay at home to take care of her children, be patient, be kind, love unconditionally and to never get angry. If a mother does not live up to these expectations established by society, then that mother is deemed a bad mother. Since a mother gives birth to her children and nurtures them, a mother who kills her children is considered to be unredeemably bad. Medea, in the play of the same name, kills her two sons and by societal standards, she would be deemed a bad mother. Contrary to society s expectations of mothers, I will argue that Medea is not a bad mother. I will do this by proving that: Medea defies the social conventions of motherhood in three ways; she kills her children in order to protect them; and, that she rebels against her husband s control and male domination by depriving him of his immortality by killing his sons and ending his bloodline. There are three ways in which Medea defies the social conventions of motherhood. Firstly, she does this by not being a stay at home mother. Secondly, she demonstrates that she can be powerful as a woman. Thirdly, she is unkind and gets angry. I will elaborate on each of these ways in the paragraphs that follow. The first way in which Medea challenges the social conventions of motherhood is by defying its conventions. One of the attributes of a social definition ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
