Alfonso XIII became King of Spain in 1902 at the age of 16 after the death of his father Alfonso XII. He ruled during a period of instability that included Spain losing its last colonies, uprisings in Africa and Barcelona, and economic struggles for workers. In 1923, General Primo de Rivera carried out a coup and became dictator with Alfonso XIII's support. However, Primo de Rivera failed to solve Spain's problems and Alfonso XIII resumed rule in 1930. In 1931 elections, supporters of a republic won and Alfonso XIII was sent into exile, ending the Spanish monarchy.
