Affixation

Affixation is a process of adding a morpheme
(or affix) to a word to create either:
a. a different form of that word
b. a new word with a different meaning
 Prefix (at the beginning of the root word)
 Suffix (at the end of the root word)
Inflectional Derivational
Most English words are made up of the base word
known as root (base form).
Prefix Root Word Suffix New Word
Dis- advantage ous disadvantageous
Un- help ful unhelpful
Un- forgive able unforgivable
Im- measure able immeasurable
Suffix
 Inflectional
 Does not change the meaning/word class
 Add grammatical information (past,
present, participle, plural)

book books
 Derivational
 Always changes the meaning
 May changes the class of the root word
