ADSL (Asymmetric Digital Subscriber Line) enables faster data transmission over copper telephone lines than conventional modems. It uses frequencies not used for voice calls, allowing voice and data simultaneously. ADSL can transmit up to 4-5 km from the central office but sometimes farther depending on wire quality. At the exchange, a splitter separates the voice and data signals with data routed over the telephone data network and eventually the Internet.
