 Addison was an English essayist, poet, playwright and
politician.
 Addison was born 1 may 1672,Milston,United Kingdom.
 Joseph was educated at Charterhouse School ,London.
 He first met Richard Steele and at The Queen’s Collage
,Oxford in 1687.
 In 1695 A poem to his Majesty ,with a dedication to Lord
Keeper Somers.
 He died 17 June 1719; Kensington, Middlesex ,England.

4. Political career
In 1708 and 1709, Addison was a Member of Parliament for
the borough of lostwithiel.
He was soon appointed secretary to the new lord lieutenant
of Ireland, load Wharton.
In 1710 , he represented Malmesbury, in his home county of
Wiltshire, holding the seat until his death in 1719.

9. The Spectator
• The Spectator was a daily publication founded by Joseph Addison and Richard
Steele in England lasting From 1711 to 1712. Each “ paper”, or “number “, was
approximately 2,500 words ling, and the original run consisted of 555 numbers,
beginning on 1 march 1711. these were collected into seven volumes. The paper
was revived without the involvement of Steele in 1714, appearing thrice weekly
for six months, and these papers when collected formed the eighth volume.
Eustace Budgell, a cousin of Addison’s ,and the poet john Hughes also
contributed to the publication.
• Aim : “to enliven morality with wit, and to temper wit with morality “.

10. TheTatler
• The Tatler, a periodical launched in London by the essayist Sir Richard
Steele in April 1709, appearing three times weekly until January 1711. At
first its avowed intention was to present accounts of gallantry, pleasure,
and entertainment, of poetry, and of foreign and domestic news.
• In time The Tatler began to investigate manners and society, establishing
its principal of ideal behavior, its concepts of a perfect gentleman, and
gentlewoman, and its standards of good taste .
