Joseph Addison was an 18th century English essayist and satirist who is best known for his modern essays published in The Tatler and The Spectator magazines. He co-founded The Spectator with his friend Richard Steele and also contributed to The Tatler. Addison is considered to have played a large role in developing the modern essay and his works from The Tatler and The Spectator helped establish a new style of English prose in the 18th century and are seen as preparing the way for the modern novel.
