Richard Steele and Joseph Addison
 The Spectator (1711-1712 and 1714) was a weekly
magazine written by Joseph Addison and Richard Steele.
 The Spectator focused more consistently on political,
philosophical, religious and literary issues.
 The Tatler folded at the start of 1711, but was almost
immediately followed by The Spectator.
 Here Addison took the lead, contributing a larger
number of essays than Steele and, most scholars agree,
setting the tone for the new journal.
 The Spectator, which was published every day except
Sunday, ran 555 issues, until finally running out of
steam.

 His favorite maxim is `A penny saved is a penny got.’
 A courtier as well as soldier.
 Heir to Sir Roger.
 A gentleman of great courage , good understanding but invincible
modesty.
 He has a small estate
 A strict honesty and regular behavior are obstacles to him.
 The military part of his life flourished him with adventures.
 He is never overbearing though accustomed to command men in the
utmost degree below him nor ever too obsequious from an habit of
obeying men highly above him.

  • 5.  The Spectator (1711-1712 and 1714) was a weekly magazine written by Joseph Addison and Richard Steele.  The Spectator focused more consistently on political, philosophical, religious and literary issues.  The Tatler folded at the start of 1711, but was almost immediately followed by The Spectator.  Here Addison took the lead, contributing a larger number of essays than Steele and, most scholars agree, setting the tone for the new journal.  The Spectator, which was published every day except Sunday, ran 555 issues, until finally running out of steam.

  • 9.  A member of inner temple.  A man of great probity ,wit and understanding.  The most learned man in club.  Excellent critic –audience feel good when he is at play and actors try to please him.  Punctual – exactly at 5 he passes through New inn and visits the play house.  His familiarity with customs, manners, actions and writings of the ancient makes him a keen observer in present world.  His taste of book is little- he reads all but approves very few.  Aristotle and Longinus are much understood by him than Littleton and Coke.
  • 10.  A merchant of great eminence in the city of London.  A man of strong reason and experience.  His notion of trade are noble and generous.  Owner of any ships and made fortune by himself.  He has natural unaffected eloquence.  He calls sea as British common and believes a trade of good sense is a pleasant able company than a scholar.  He argues that diligence make more lasting acquisition than valor and sloth as ruined many nation than sword.  His favorite maxim is `A penny saved is a penny got.’
  • 11.  A courtier as well as soldier.  Heir to Sir Roger.  A gentleman of great courage , good understanding but invincible modesty.  He has a small estate  A strict honesty and regular behavior are obstacles to him.  The military part of his life flourished him with adventures.  He is never overbearing though accustomed to command men in the utmost degree below him nor ever too obsequious from an habit of obeying men highly above him.
  • 12.  Clergy man  Chamber counselor.  He is not interested in this world.  A philosophic man of great learning and great sanctity of life.  Has followers.  The most exact good breeding.  Conceives hope from his misfortunes.  He runs a weak constitution.  Will honey comb  Well turned gentleman of good height and fortune.  Honest worthy man.  He knows the history of every mode.  Well dressed man.  He can smile when one speaks to him and laughs easily.
