MOOCs are massive open online courses that are taught online to large numbers of students by professors through short video lectures and assignments. The first MOOC launched in 2008 and had over 2,200 students sign up. MOOCs provide equal access to education for anyone anywhere and allow students to take courses of their choice conveniently and for free using social networks, though only a small percentage of students typically complete the courses due to their large size and lack of direct interaction with instructors.
