The term was coined by Dave Cormier or
Bryan Alexander (Alexander, 2008;
Cormier, 2008; Daniel, 2012; Masters
and Qaboos, 2011; G.Siemans, 2012a) to
describe a course on Connectivism
organized by George Siemans and
Stephen Downers in 2008, which
attracted over 2200 participants
(Downes, 2010).

Short History
• In 2004, Stephen Downe and George Siemons
constructed the concept of Constructivism.
• Four years later, the very first original MOOC
was presented to an audience of 2200 students
at the University of Manitoba.
• Videos (MOOCs) were then added onto
YouTube by David Cormier In 2010.
• In 2011, MOOCs for the college prep skills
helps prepare first-year university students for
college requirements (Cormier, 2011).
Short History
• A year later (2012), the first MOOC
from Harvard has around 370 000
students registered students (Pappano,
2012).
