When / While
-when + simple past tense -When I saw him, he was playing tennis. (Onu gördüğümde tenis
oynuyordu.) -when / while + past continuous tense -When / While I was playing football, I broke
my leg. (Futbol oynarken bacağım kırıldı.)
When ve While bağlaçlarının kullanımıyla ilgili genel kurallar aşağıda verilmiştir.
Geçmişte devam etmekte olan bir eylem sırasında bir başka eylem olmuş ve devam eden eylemi
bölmüşse, bu durum hem when, hem de while bağlaçları kullanılarak ifade edilebilir.
- I was eating dinner when the guests arrived. (Konuklar geldiğinde yemek yiyordum.)
- I hurt my leg while I was playing football. (Futbol oynarken bacağımı incittim.)
WHEN "When" ile kurulmuş bir zarf cümleciği (adverbial clause), genellikle temel cümledeki (main
clause) eylemin devam etmekte olduğu zamanı açıklar. "Bir eylem olduğunda bir başka eylem
oluyordu" biçiminde bir anlam taşır. Bu nedenle "when" in bağlı bulunduğu cümlede Simple Past,
temel cümlede ise Past Continuous kullanılır.
- When he came in, I was studying. (O içeri girdiğinde, ben ders çalışıyordum.) adverbial main
- I was reading when he came in. (O geldiğinde, ben kitap okuyordum.)
- When I went out, it was snowing. (Dışarı çıktığımda kar yağıyordu.)
- They were arguing when I entered the room. (Odaya girdiğimde, tartışıyorlardı.)
When bağlacının yukarıdaki cümlelerde kullanılışı, "When + Simple Past, Past Continuous" şeklinde
formülize edilebilir. "When" arka arkaya yapılmış eylemleri anlatmak için de kullandır. Bu durumda
her iki cümle de Simple Past Tense ile kurulur.
- When he arrived, we went into the cinema. (O gelince, sinemaya girdik.) (Önce o geldi, sonra
biz sinemaya girdik.)
- When he left work, he got on a bus and went home. (İşten çıkınca, otobüse binip eve gitti.)
- When the teacher asked a question, I raised my hand. (Öğretmen soru sorunca, elimi
kaldırdım.)
When bağlacının yukarıdaki cümlelerde kullanılışı, "’When + Simple Past, Simple Past" şeklinde
formülize edilebilir.
"While" bağlacı genellikle, temel cümledeki eylem sırasında devam etmekte olan bir başka eylemi
anlatmak için kullanılır. Bu nedenle, "while" in bağlı bulunduğu cümle Past Continuous, temel
cümle ise Simple Past’dır.
- While I was studying, he came in. (Ben ders çalışırken o geldi.) adverbial main
- I left home while my parents were sleeping. (Annem babam uyurken evden çıktım.)
I took a photograph while you weren’t looking. (Sen uyurken, fotoğraf çektim.)
While bağlacının yukarıdaki cümlelerde kullanılışı, "While + Past Continuous, Simple Past" şeklinde
formülize edilebilir.
PRE-INTERMEDIATE A2
http://profile.live.com/cid-3C4D04F2F9596FA7 9
NOTE: Bu tür cümlelerde "while" yerine "when" kullanmak da mümkündür, ancak "while" kullanımı
daha yaygındır.
- When/While I was walking home from work, I bumped into an old friend on the street. (İşten
eve doğru yürürken, caddede eski bir arkadaşımla karşılaştım.)
- Yesterday, a stray dog was nearly hit by a car when/while it was crossing the street. (Dün bir
sokak köpeği karşıdan karşıya geçerken az daha bir arabanın altında kalıyordu.)
"While" cümleciği, temel cümledeki eylemle aynı anda olan bir eylemi anlatmak için de kullanılır.
Bu durumda her iki cümle de Simple Past Tense ile kurulur.
- I sang while I washed the dishes. (Bulaşıkları yıkarken şarkı söyledim.)
- She watched me while I made the cake. (Ben kek yaparken o beni izledi.)
- I waited outside while she had an interview. (O görüşme yaparken ben dışarıda bekledim.)
While bağlacının yukarıdaki cümlelerde kullanılışı, "While + Simple Past, Simple Past" şeklinde
formülize edilebilir. "While" birbirine paralel devam eden iki eylemi anlatmak için de kullanılır. Bu
durumda her iki cümlede de Past Continuous Tense kullanılır. "While"ın bu biçimde kullanımıyla
genellikle yakınma, içerleme gibi duygular ifade edilir.
- While the teacher was lecturing, the students were talking among themselves. (Öğretmen
ders anlatırken öğrenciler kendi aralarında konuşuyorlardı.)
- I was studying while everybody at home was sleeping. (Evde herkes uyurken ben ders
çalışıyordum.) While bağlacının yukarıdaki cümlelerde kullanılışı, "While + Past Continuous,
Past Continuous" şeklinde formülize edilebilir. While ile aynı anlamda kullanılan diğer bağlaç
"as" dir.
- While/As I was coming here, I ran into an old friend. (Buraya gelirken eski bir arkadaşa
rastladım.) -I had a look at the old magazines while/as I waited at the doctor’s. (Doktorda
beklerken, eski dergilere bir göz attım.) "Just as", daha vurgulu bir anlatımdır.
- The postman came Just as I was leaving home. (Tam ben evden çıkarken, postacı geldi.)
- Just as I sat down at the table, the phone rang. (Tam masaya oturdum ki telefon çaldı.)
**While kullanılan cümleyi hem başta hem sonda kullanabiliriz, when i de aynı şekildeister
cümlenin başında ister sonunda kullanabiliriz. Cümlenin anlamında hiç birdeğişiklik olmaz. **
Sadece zamanlara dikkat edilmesi, when den sonra gelecek cümlenin past tense, while dan sonra
ise past continuous tense olması gerekmektedir.
- While I was doing my homework, my brother went outside. (Ben ödevimiyaparken, kardeşim
dışarıya çıktı.)
- I was doing my homework when my brother went outside.(Kardeşim dışarıyaçıktığı zaman
ödevimi yapıyordum.)
- My brother went outside, while I was doing my homework.
- When my brother went outside, I was doing my homework.

Use of Passive
Passive voice is used when the focus is on the action. It is not important or not known, however, who
or what is performing the action.
Example: My bike was stolen.
In the-example above, the focus is on the my bike was stolen. I do not know, however, who did it.
Sometimes a statement in passive is more polite than active voice, as the following example shows:
Example: A mistake was made.
In this case, I focus on the fact that a mistake was made, but I do not blame anyone(e.g. You have
made a mistake.)
Form of Passive
Subject + finite form of to be + Past Participle (3rd column of irregular verbs)
Example: A letter was written. When rewriting active sentences in passive voice, note the following:
 the object of the active sentence becomes the subject of the passive sentence
 the finite form of the verb in changed (to be + past participle)
 the subject of the active sentence becomes the object of the passive sentence (or is dropped)

Relative Pronouns
A relative pronoun is a pronoun that introduces a relative clause. It is called a "relative"
pronoun because it "relates" to the word that it modifies. Here is an example:
 The person who phoned me last night is my teacher.
In the above example, "who":
 relates to "person", which it modifies
 introduces the relative clause "who phoned me last night"
There are five relative pronouns: who, whom, whose, which, that*
Who (subject) and whom (object) are generally only for people. Whose is for possession.
Which is for things. That can be used for people** and things and as subject and object in
defining relative clauses (clauses that are essential to the sentence and do not simply add extra
information).
Relative pronouns can refer to singular or plural, and there is no difference between male and

female.

  • 8. PRE-INTERMEDIATE A2 http://profile.live.com/cid-3C4D04F2F9596FA7 8 When / While -when + simple past tense -When I saw him, he was playing tennis. (Onu gördüğümde tenis oynuyordu.) -when / while + past continuous tense -When / While I was playing football, I broke my leg. (Futbol oynarken bacağım kırıldı.) When ve While bağlaçlarının kullanımıyla ilgili genel kurallar aşağıda verilmiştir. Geçmişte devam etmekte olan bir eylem sırasında bir başka eylem olmuş ve devam eden eylemi bölmüşse, bu durum hem when, hem de while bağlaçları kullanılarak ifade edilebilir. - I was eating dinner when the guests arrived. (Konuklar geldiğinde yemek yiyordum.) - I hurt my leg while I was playing football. (Futbol oynarken bacağımı incittim.) WHEN "When" ile kurulmuş bir zarf cümleciği (adverbial clause), genellikle temel cümledeki (main clause) eylemin devam etmekte olduğu zamanı açıklar. "Bir eylem olduğunda bir başka eylem oluyordu" biçiminde bir anlam taşır. Bu nedenle "when" in bağlı bulunduğu cümlede Simple Past, temel cümlede ise Past Continuous kullanılır. - When he came in, I was studying. (O içeri girdiğinde, ben ders çalışıyordum.) adverbial main - I was reading when he came in. (O geldiğinde, ben kitap okuyordum.) - When I went out, it was snowing. (Dışarı çıktığımda kar yağıyordu.) - They were arguing when I entered the room. (Odaya girdiğimde, tartışıyorlardı.) When bağlacının yukarıdaki cümlelerde kullanılışı, "When + Simple Past, Past Continuous" şeklinde formülize edilebilir. "When" arka arkaya yapılmış eylemleri anlatmak için de kullandır. Bu durumda her iki cümle de Simple Past Tense ile kurulur. - When he arrived, we went into the cinema. (O gelince, sinemaya girdik.) (Önce o geldi, sonra biz sinemaya girdik.) - When he left work, he got on a bus and went home. (İşten çıkınca, otobüse binip eve gitti.) - When the teacher asked a question, I raised my hand. (Öğretmen soru sorunca, elimi kaldırdım.) When bağlacının yukarıdaki cümlelerde kullanılışı, "’When + Simple Past, Simple Past" şeklinde formülize edilebilir. "While" bağlacı genellikle, temel cümledeki eylem sırasında devam etmekte olan bir başka eylemi anlatmak için kullanılır. Bu nedenle, "while" in bağlı bulunduğu cümle Past Continuous, temel cümle ise Simple Past’dır. - While I was studying, he came in. (Ben ders çalışırken o geldi.) adverbial main - I left home while my parents were sleeping. (Annem babam uyurken evden çıktım.) I took a photograph while you weren’t looking. (Sen uyurken, fotoğraf çektim.) While bağlacının yukarıdaki cümlelerde kullanılışı, "While + Past Continuous, Simple Past" şeklinde formülize edilebilir.
  • 9. PRE-INTERMEDIATE A2 http://profile.live.com/cid-3C4D04F2F9596FA7 9 NOTE: Bu tür cümlelerde "while" yerine "when" kullanmak da mümkündür, ancak "while" kullanımı daha yaygındır. - When/While I was walking home from work, I bumped into an old friend on the street. (İşten eve doğru yürürken, caddede eski bir arkadaşımla karşılaştım.) - Yesterday, a stray dog was nearly hit by a car when/while it was crossing the street. (Dün bir sokak köpeği karşıdan karşıya geçerken az daha bir arabanın altında kalıyordu.) "While" cümleciği, temel cümledeki eylemle aynı anda olan bir eylemi anlatmak için de kullanılır. Bu durumda her iki cümle de Simple Past Tense ile kurulur. - I sang while I washed the dishes. (Bulaşıkları yıkarken şarkı söyledim.) - She watched me while I made the cake. (Ben kek yaparken o beni izledi.) - I waited outside while she had an interview. (O görüşme yaparken ben dışarıda bekledim.) While bağlacının yukarıdaki cümlelerde kullanılışı, "While + Simple Past, Simple Past" şeklinde formülize edilebilir. "While" birbirine paralel devam eden iki eylemi anlatmak için de kullanılır. Bu durumda her iki cümlede de Past Continuous Tense kullanılır. "While"ın bu biçimde kullanımıyla genellikle yakınma, içerleme gibi duygular ifade edilir. - While the teacher was lecturing, the students were talking among themselves. (Öğretmen ders anlatırken öğrenciler kendi aralarında konuşuyorlardı.) - I was studying while everybody at home was sleeping. (Evde herkes uyurken ben ders çalışıyordum.) While bağlacının yukarıdaki cümlelerde kullanılışı, "While + Past Continuous, Past Continuous" şeklinde formülize edilebilir. While ile aynı anlamda kullanılan diğer bağlaç "as" dir. - While/As I was coming here, I ran into an old friend. (Buraya gelirken eski bir arkadaşa rastladım.) -I had a look at the old magazines while/as I waited at the doctor’s. (Doktorda beklerken, eski dergilere bir göz attım.) "Just as", daha vurgulu bir anlatımdır. - The postman came Just as I was leaving home. (Tam ben evden çıkarken, postacı geldi.) - Just as I sat down at the table, the phone rang. (Tam masaya oturdum ki telefon çaldı.) **While kullanılan cümleyi hem başta hem sonda kullanabiliriz, when i de aynı şekildeister cümlenin başında ister sonunda kullanabiliriz. Cümlenin anlamında hiç birdeğişiklik olmaz. ** Sadece zamanlara dikkat edilmesi, when den sonra gelecek cümlenin past tense, while dan sonra ise past continuous tense olması gerekmektedir. - While I was doing my homework, my brother went outside. (Ben ödevimiyaparken, kardeşim dışarıya çıktı.) - I was doing my homework when my brother went outside.(Kardeşim dışarıyaçıktığı zaman ödevimi yapıyordum.) - My brother went outside, while I was doing my homework. - When my brother went outside, I was doing my homework. • 20. PRE-INTERMEDIATE A2 http://profile.live.com/cid-3C4D04F2F9596FA7 20 Present Example: She cleans the house – Active The house is cleaned by her – Passive (am,is,are) + V3 I am confused by the question – Passive The question is confusing – Active Present Past (V2) (am,is,are)+V3 (was,were)+V3 Use of Passive Passive voice is used when the focus is on the action. It is not important or not known, however, who or what is performing the action. Example: My bike was stolen. In the-example above, the focus is on the my bike was stolen. I do not know, however, who did it. Sometimes a statement in passive is more polite than active voice, as the following example shows: Example: A mistake was made. In this case, I focus on the fact that a mistake was made, but I do not blame anyone(e.g. You have made a mistake.) Form of Passive Subject + finite form of to be + Past Participle (3rd column of irregular verbs) Example: A letter was written. When rewriting active sentences in passive voice, note the following:  the object of the active sentence becomes the subject of the passive sentence  the finite form of the verb in changed (to be + past participle)  the subject of the active sentence becomes the object of the passive sentence (or is dropped) Examples of Passive Tense Subject Verb Object Simple Present Active: Rita writes a letter Passive: A letter is written by Rita Simple Past Active: Rita wrote a letter Passive: A letter was written by Rita Present Perfect Active: Rita has written a letter Passive: A letter has been written by Rita Future I Active: Rita will write a letter Passive: A letter will be written by Rita Hilfsverben Active: Rita can write a letter Passive: A letter can be written by Rita www.erkantosun.edu.tc Passives Write the past participle of each verb under the verb: Paint – painted, write – written, discover – discovered, invent – invented, build – built, climb – climbed, manufacture – manufactured, kill – killed, cause – caused, grov – grown, eat – eaten, first see – first seen, make – maked, shoot – shooted, assassinate – assassinated, destroy – destroyed
