Zara found a plant with variegated leaves that had both green and white areas. She predicted the green parts would contain starch from photosynthesis, but the white parts would not. To test this, she used iodine solution on sections of the leaf. Iodine turns blue-black in the presence of starch. Her results supported her prediction, as the iodine turned blue-black on the green areas but not the white areas, showing the green parts had synthesized starch through photosynthesis while the white parts had not.
