Hockey Fighting Essay
A video of enforcers Daniel Maggio and Brian McGrattan fighting went viral. They were landing
punches during the game. Ultimately, the hockey fight led to an unconscious McGrattan. When Justin
Abdelakder watched the video, it reminded him of hockey s history of fighting. In the past, fights in
hockey were a common occurrence. Hockeyfights.com has said that there has only one fight out of
four NHL games this year on average. That means that around 357 fights have occurred out of 1,230
regular game this year. According to TSN network, that means that there have only been 10 fights
more than the 720 games shortened 2012 2013 season. The game of hockey has been changing and
speed and skill has been changing as well. The enforcers and their fighting ... Show more content on

As a result, it has virtually taken fighting out of the game of hockey. It is unfortunate, but a brain
injury can have a huge impact on the players as well as the families of the players. In one of the
football cases with Paul Oliver, he became uncharacteristically violent towards his family because he
had developed a brain disease known as encephalopathy. While the fans do love hockey fights and it
has served a big role in hockey, the lack of fighting has also made players more honest in the game.
The consequences of fighting such as head injury do not make it worth it. NHL and the players have a
responsibility to protect the integrity of the game. Abdelkader has remained one of the fighters who
keeps it physical on his team. He has stayed willing to fight when needed. Regardless, Abdelkader
says that even if they eliminated fighting in hockey, it would not change the game for him. Fighting in
hockey has remained one of the traditions in the game that has made it so exciting for fans to watch.
Nevertheless, there is less need for fighting, and as a result, you see less

Water And Its Effects On Our Lives And The Health Of Our...
The commodification of water throughout history has had substantial impacts the way we live our
lives and the health of our nation. Initially effluents from towns, various types of mills, and tanneries
were channeled to the nearest waterway to be carried downstream and away from the pollution source.
This theory of dilution is the solution to pollution worked for a little while but as population grew and
the demand for freshwater for humans consumption increased as well Americans learn quickly that
this theory was incorrect. The change of heart on this method was highlighted in a court case in New
York in 1913. This court case was brought against the village of Moravia where the Board of
Education constructed a sewer line from their ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This was very evident in the report by Henry B Ward where he had highlighted that the conditions of
the Hudson River in New York had deteriorated so poorly throughout his life that the banks of the
river resembled an open sewer or the stretches of a septic tank [3]. Mr. Ward also stated that the
conditions along the Hudson River did not require any chemical testing to confirm the volume of
pollution that it was blatantly obvious by the form debris on the bottom as well as with materials
floating in the water. Unfortunately this was not a remote situation but was discovered in multiple
locations along the Hudson River [4]. These cases initially started out in small isolated areas but due
to the increase in population as well as expanding industrial complexes nearly waterways the location
and magnitude of pollution grew rapidly. It standing commercial industries of the early 1900s was no

Alcohol Abuse And Alcoholism Abuse
The alcohol abuse definition is similar to alcoholism in that in both cases alcohol is causing harm to
the drinker s life and those around them. The difference is that those who abuse alcohol, but are not
yet alcoholics, typically can put some limitations on their drinking and they have not yet become
physically addicted to alcohol. The key to the alcohol abuse definition is not in the amount of alcohol
consumed but on how it affects an individual. Alcohol abuse is a psychiatric diagnosis in which there
is recurring harmful use of ethanol despite its negative consequence. In 2013 it was reclassified as
alcohol use disorder along with alcohol dependence. There are two types of alcohol abuse, those who
have anti social and pleasure ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Get hooked on drinking to stave off withdrawal symptoms. Also, younger family members tend to
mimic the alcohol use patterns of their parents, siblings, and other family members. Peers also
influence drinking behavior. Some studies shows that regardless of family history of alcoholism, a
lack of parental monitoring, severe and recurrent family conflict and poor parent child relationships
can contribute to alcohol abuse in adolescents. Children with conduct skills as well as those with little
connection to parents, other family members, or school may be at an increased risk for alcohol abuse.
Before you seek treatment the first and most important part of the process is that of admitting that you
have a problem. Once you have done so then the next step is help and support. Beating an alcohol
addiction is a long and painful process. It requires much more than sheer willpower: it requires you to
make changes to every aspect of your life and some of that can be more difficult to do than others. But
help and support is available so you don t need to do this on your own. Treatments for alcohol
addiction are quite varied because there are multiple perspectives for the condition itself. Those who
approach alcoholism as a medical condition or disease recommend differing treatments than, for
instance, those who approach the condition as one of social choice. Most treatments focus on helping
people discontinue their alcohol intake,

The Five Types Of Government In Ancient Greece
Ancient Greece consisted of several hundred polies or city states. Many of them were villages or small
towns, but there were two big and powerful Greek polies, Athens and Sparta.
Athens was a cultural and economic powerhouse, and the birthplace of democracy. Sparta was an
imperial city state, and had two kings (Brand, n.d.). (1)
There were five types of f government in Ancient Greece: monarchy, aristocracy, oligarchy, tyranny
and democracy.
Monarchy
Monarchy is undivided rule or absolute sovereignty by a single person (Merriam webster.com, n.d., 1).
(2)
In the Greek world monarchies were rare, and were distinguishable from a tyranny when the monarch
ruled in interest of his people. The most monarchies were Macedonia and Epeiros, where the ruler
shared power with assembly. Although Sparta also had a citizen assembly, and two kings, but they
were not absolute monarchs. They had great power when they led Spartan army in the war, but in the
peace, they were kept in check by Ephors who were elected by assembly. The kings were also
members of the Gerousia and were admitted from a young age, so they must have had a significant
advantage over the other members who couldn t join until they were 60 (Cartwright, 2013). (3)
Aristocracy
Aristocracy is government by those considered to be the best or most able people in the state
(Dictionary.com, n.d., 3). (4)

Analysis of Setting and Characterization in Greasy Lake ...
In his short story Greasy Lake, the lake with the community teenagers create a stereotypical scene of
current youth pop culture. Many youth who read this story can find the ironic references and
similarities with their lifestyle in today s world. T. Coraghessan Boyle uses the setting of the story to
expose a world lacking self discipline and showing immorality amongst a community youth, which
can sometimes be rather common today. This also aids in creating an atmosphere that surrounds
suspense and impaired judgement to better develop the characters of the story. Boyle is able to achieve
this by creating a setting with the story of the Greasy Lake and describing the Lake as both a setting
and main character. Greasy Lake is described by the narrator as an aura of possessiveness and
suspense to the average reader. However, while somewhat stereotypical, the narrator and his friends
see the lake as the most ideal location to get together on late nights. This can be translated as the
beginning of setting a scene for a location in which the adolescent youth can meet, with the reference
to Bruce Springsteen s words from a song that opens the story: It s about a mile down on the dark side
of Route 88 (Boyle, 125). The words from the song create a scene of how the youth had essentially
treated the lake as their own place. The image is further made clear when the faint island in the middle
of the lake is described as a single ravaged island a hundred yards from

Lost Girl Analysis
Lost Girl was performed at the Oscar G. Brockett Theatre in the F. Loren Winship Building by Texas
Theatre and Dance. Written by Kimberly Belflower, the play engaged the audience through its use of
projection designs, surprise effects, and sedentary set designs and was well received by adults and
students alike. Through these factors, the production was able to relay the message of finding oneself
to the audience, and encourage those who are lost to follow Wendy Darling s path to acceptance.
Primarily, Lost Girl utilizes digitally projected shadows in the play to offer not only a background for
the plot, but also a connection to the movie Peter Pan. As the public is more acquainted with Disney s
version of the animated film, the projection ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
When the narrators stated Wendy wrote letters to Peter , instead of acting out the phrase, a platform
opened above the stage and poured out letters that Wendy wrote. When the sheets of paper cascaded
down, some people let out a gasp of surprise. A few letters even drifted to the front row of seats, and
some were picked up by the audience. In effect, this action allowed the audience to have a three
dimensional interaction with the play. Previously, a performance usually only integrates the senses of
sight and sound, but in this instance people were able to reach out and touch the flying papers. The
surprise effect allows Lost Girl to surpass the traditional theatre space, and to allow the audience a
deeper immersion into the play. From the engagement, the crumpled up papers not only symbolize
Wendy s frustrated attempts in communicating with Peter, but also her incompetence in forgetting the
past. Like a sheet of paper, Wendy was able to momentarily fly, but once she reached the ground, she
was just like any other girl in the world. Through this effect, the play s message is relayed through
surprises, and the public experiences the theme on a deeper level as they not only can see or hear
emotions, but can also physically feel

Schoharie Creek Bridge Collapse
The process of removal of sediments from around the bridge piers is referred to as bridge scouring.
The major cause of scouring is the increase velocity of the flowing water which takes away the
sediments with it causing the formation of scour holes thereby compromising the integrity of the
structure. In United States, bridge scour is one of the three main causes of bridge failure and it has
been estimated that 60% of all bridge failure results from scour and other hydraulic related causes.
One such disaster is the Schoharie Creek Bridge Collapse which took the life of 10 people and caused
the bridge related failures of about $30 million. From the above case study, it was evident that
scouring has very adverse effects in terms of loss of life, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The implementation costs of the recycled tire mats is also unknown but what is known is that the tire
mats last longer and require less repair than the riprap. They last on average 32 years. That is 12 years
longer than the riprap and will therefore cost that much less when taking all costs into consideration.
Due to its robust material and hydrodynamic design, the Scouring ramp is expected to have a
significantly longer life span than the tradition Rip Rap approach. Our suggested material for the
ramps are similar in strength and oxidation resistant properties as the high strength steel that makes up
TLP tendons of deep water oil platforms. The metals used for these anchors can withstand strong
ocean currents as wells as oxygen based corrosion. The life span of the ramps if made from the same
grade of steel is estimated to last a minimum of 32 years. The tire mats are expected to have an
extremely long life span due to rubber strength of car tires. Hence the tire mats are expected to share
the same life span of the entire bridge itself. Rip rap, though it is expected to have a long life span as
well, the issue of scouring taking place around the rip rap adds significant cost given that eventually,
the rock pile would need to be replaced every 2 years or so. A pier that requires 50 cubic meters of rip
rap would require 132 tons of concrete rubble costing nearly $300 per replacement. With this data we
are able to compare the present worth of the repair and replacement cost of Rip Rap and Scouring
ramps over the span of a 32

New York City Similarities
In the north and south of the United States, there are many differences in culture. The weather, the
population, and the economy are a few. They both have the same language but are spoken in two
different accents. You can always tell the difference between the two.
New York City is in the northern part of the United States and is considered the city that never sleeps.
It is also known as The Big Apple . People are walking the streets, eating at restaurants and going to
bars at all hours of the night. Tourist come to see the attractions and to go shopping. There are many
ways of transportation: train, bus, cab, car, or walking. Public transportation is twenty four hours a day
and seven days a week and is their main source of getting around town. Housing is mostly apartments
or condos that are for rent. Most people do not own their own homes or own a vehicle, because they
cannot afford it. The cost of living in New York City is more expensive than most popular cities. The
rent for a one bedroom apartment is around 3,000 an month. Childcare is close to 2,000 an month. In
order to maintain a comfortable lifestyle most New Yorkers make close to 7,000 dollars a month. The
population is 8,537,673 as of 2016 and as many as 800 languages spoken there. People often keep to
themselves and really have no time to get to know each other, because it is a fast pace environment. It
has the largest foreign born population in the world and 61 million tourists go there for vacation. The

The Teen Drug Abuse
The teen drug abuse is extremely bad now a days because that s all what mostly all teens wan and they
can never stop because they use it to their advantage and they convince their friends and other people
to do it with them. The feelings that are associated with using drugs are relief, silliness, euphoria, and
happiness. After all those good feelings they have side effects after that and those are headaches,
drowsiness, nausea, dehydration, exhaustion, and fever. They can even have side effects like vomiting
and a little bit of loss memory. But when you abuse drugs and by that means that when you use drugs
to many times and too much it can lead to death. The ways you can die from drugs are overdoses,
traffic accidents and that s if and when you use it when driving, crime related activity or other causes.
These side effects and death and long term consequences.
The first topic I m going to talk about is marijuana and that drug is actually bad for your brain cells
and this drug is a derived flower of the cannabis plant and the ways it is consumed is the dried
cannabis plant, the hashish is made from the resin of the cannabis, and hash oil and it is a think oil
extracted from hashish. You can have memory loss and etc. When you use marijuana and you are also
in a sport like soccer, football, etc. and you are doing drugs your physical dependence will be quite
low. Also when you are playing sports and you want a scholarship from it, marijuana will mess you up

Globalization And The Fast Food Market
Dennis Asante

Globalization
It is summer in Ghana and I m walking down a block in my neighborhood. The air is hazy and dense
and the smell of food fills every corner. A city that never used to have any of foreign foods, now filled
with the aroma and signs of fast food restaurants. As I walked, I realize that there was only one whole
food market. Meanwhile, a McDonald s and Kentucky Fried Chicken were seen on multiple corners.
Another thing I noticed: the majority of people entering the fast food market are from places that were
once filled with only traditionalists. A region where its former citizens used to invest their time in
cooking local traditional food and sold them to the public and families. These same communities have
now become so westernized that they neglect the traditional side of diet. Instead, everyone now focus
on the new fast food market. People are flocking with their families into the fast food restaurants.
Watching the differences between those who entered the supermarket and those who entered the
McDonalds s, I couldn t help but think about complications minorities in the United States face from
the fast food market. I made a very quick connection with the United States because I had an idea of
how people in the US especially minorities, suffer from fast food. Some people (fast food victims) in
Ghana aren t any better than minorities in the US. The commonness of fast food in Ghana has created

Magnificent Pythagorean Paradoxes In Ancient Greece
Subsequent to the conquest of Egypt by Alexander the Great, the ancient Greeks established possibly
the greatest center of learning at the time in Alexandria. Indeed, history purports that perhaps this
great library rivaled even the great library in Athens, especially considering the fact that the
Alexandrian library produced such significant mathematical figures as Archimedes and Euclid, the
works of whom likely depended on the earlier works of great Greek mathematicians like Thales and
Pythagoras (Lahanas, 2016). Although even those preceding mathematicians likely expounded upon
the mathematical methodologies and computational techniques developed in earlier Babylonian and
Egyptian civilizations. Still, there can be no doubt that modern mathematics, ... Show more content on

The premise behind the paradoxes was that the method of describing motion using Pythagorean
thought, treating numbers solely as discrete, arguably demonstrated the impossibility of motion. His
four paradoxes illustrating this line of thinking are The Dichotomy, Achilles and the Tortoise, The
Arrow, and The Stadium. The paradox presented in The Dichotomy is that a race, from beginning to
end, is a finite distance. Zeno purported that there are infinitely many half distances, which meant that
you could never reach the end, according to Pythagorean thought. This paradox offered a precedent to
the idea of the limit of an infinite sequence, in that an infinite number of half distances can add to a
finite distance. Achilles and the Tortoise presented a similar paradox about infinite measures within a
finite distance, and demonstrated that the boast of Achilles, that he could beat the tortoise even when
the tortoise had a head start, could not come to fruition based on Pythagorean thought. The Arrow
presented a paradox between the Pythagorean thought, that discrete units of instances make up time,
and the premise that if Pythagoreans were correct then the arrow could not move. Thus, claimed Zeno,
time must be continuous and not discrete. The Stadium presents a situation which proves that there is
no smallest unit of time, as Pythagoreans believed, and therefore time must be both finitely divisible
and infinitely divisible (Andrews, Development of calculus: More about the paradoxes, 2016).
Although Zeno s arguments were sound, they did not negate the influence that Pythagoras had on the
study of mathematics. Indeed, another famous Greek philosopher, Plato, professedly transferred his
knowledge of Pythagorean mathematics to one of his students, Eudoxus (Lahanas,

The Founding Of Rome: Romulus and Remus History has appointed an important event, surrounded

myth was initiated by Roman scholars of the late century B.C., who despite the fact that they had not
witnessed any of the events concerning Romulus and Remus, created this myth from only a figment of
imagination and beliefs. Romans and many historians of our day owe their gratitude to these scholars
for their contribution to the history of the foundation of Rome. The existence of Remus and Romulus

establishment of this city. Furthermore, we have to recognize the importance of Rhea and the god

To what extent are volcanic landforms fundamental to our understanding of plate tectonics theory?
(40) Plate tectonics theory is the scientific theory that describes the large scale motion of the Earth s
lithosphere, which is broken up into tectonic plates. Volcanic landforms are undoubtedly very
important in aiding our understanding of plate tectonic theory. However, there is other evidence that
must be considered as well. Different types of volcanoes are created at plate margins due to the
viscosity of the lava. The two main types of volcanoes are composite volcanoes and shield volcanoes.
Composite volcanoes are generally formed at destructive plate boundaries as high viscous lava is
produced as less dense oceanic crust is ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
An example of this is the south east coast of North America and the south west coast of Africa. This
aids our understanding of plate tectonic theory on a large scale over millions of years. However,
although there is a lot of evidence from volcanic landforms that can be used to explain plate tectonics
theory, there is other important evidence that cannot be ignored. Fossil evidence is very important for
our understanding of plate tectonics theory. Similar animal fossils have been found on the South
American and African continents. These fossils suggest that the continents were once joined together.
Fossils of an extinct reptile, named a Mesosaurus, have been found in southern Africa and South
America. Scientists believe that the only explanation for this fossil being found on these two
continents is that they were once joined and have become separated due to plate movements. Plant
fossils, such as a fossil of the Glossopteris tree have been found in several countries across the
Southern Hemisphere such as India, Australia and even Antarctica. The discovery of these fossils
prompted scientists to conclude that these countries must once have been joined in one large land
mass. The discovery of such fossils as this in Antarctica gives additional weight to this theory as
vegetation cannot survive the harsh Antarctic environment suggesting that if vegetation has been able
to grow previously, the positioning of the continent must have been

Miscavige abuse to other members of the church being forced to attack each other (Childs et al.).
Secondly, there is the form of emotional abuse, which consists of being yelled at about sexuality, and
being forced to feel like a prisoner or a mental health patient. The Emotional abuse in the church often
happens when Miscavige forces staffers to routine checks in which they are forced to spill all their
secrets, and if Miscavige hears anything he doesn t like then the people confessing are punished
(Childs et al.). The staff members are also prohibited from leaving the church. They work in buildings
with individual security guards that follow the person, and there are fences everywhere, as well as
cameras (Childs et al.). Eventually, it gives the staffer a feeling that they are a prisoner, like they can t
leave, they are trapped. Even after leaving the church an Ex Scientologist said that when she and her
husband were testifying against their contract, discrediting the couple s argument, making it seem
invalid. In addition to emotional abuse, physical abuse is very present in the church as well. The
workers are being worked seven days a week, sixteen hours a day, and for $17 a week

Essay On New Orleans
New Orleans is located in Southeastern Louisiana. The last recording of the population in New
Orleans was in 2013. The population was 378,715. But before that, the population was at 495,080. The
massive decrease in population just one effect of the devastating flood that occurred in 2005. In 2005
the population was 208,508. At that time New Orleans was 287 years old. It was founded in 1718.
New orleans is a subtropical climate with nice year round weather. The weather changes from the mid
50 s in the winter to the mid 90 s in the winter. Rain in New orleans is normal and the monthly
average is about 4 to 5 inches of precipitation. One of the biggest businesses in New Orleans is
Entergy Corporation. That company s assets is $38.69 billion. ... Show more content on

It has housing, hospitals, and school, etc. We have a lot of abandoned buildings in New Orleans
because of the flood, the population dropped so a lot of people didn t go shopping so store owners had
to close their shop. So we decided to renovate them into modern things. Like the Charity Hospital. It is
a million square feet in the middle of the city. We can renovate that into a more modern Charity
Hospital. A Charity Hospital would be best because there are a lot of people that don t have insurance
or a health care provider so they depend on Charity Hospitals. Either that or let there be free health
insurance. Anyway, there are also a lot of residential places in New Orleans so the population is
average. If there is a lot of residentials that means there is a decent amount of children in the city. So
that means there is a lot of schools. But, because of the flood the schools drop with the population. So
lots of kids education was getting messed with. So some of the other abandoned places like the
Lalaurie Mansion can be turned into a kindergarten through 5th grade school. There are a lot more
abandoned buildings and we can fix them or completely changed into something better and more

Authoritarian Regimes And Totalitarian Regimes
In 20th century the global community witnessed a tremendous amount of chaos. World Wars, and
ideologically driven proxy wars brought destruction, and decline to many great countries. One would
think that many people have died in these wars, but it is shocking to note that four times as many
people have died at the hands of their government than in these wars. Institutions like the government
are created to represent the people, to serve, and benefit their welfare. A type of government that does
not follow this norm are often oppressive authoritarian regimes. These regimes can range from a one
party rule where a political party or group governs, to a one man rule. Whichever it may be,
authoritarian regimes tend to use similar tactics that ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In the early 20th century, Guatemala s future looked promising. The country had undergone social
democratic reform, making it a developing democratic nation. The first two democratically held
elections were won by nationalistic and reformist presidents. Progress and change is what the
Guatemalans wanted as they sought to rid themselves of the poverty that plagued their country. Jacobo
Arbenz succeeded Juan Jose Arevalo in 1950, and Arbenz would continue Arevalo s socialist policies.
These policies included land reforms that redistributed land to the indigenous population. The land
that was redistributed was previously expropriated from foreign companies, mainly the United States
industries such as the United Fruit Company. Under these foreign companies, the indigenous workers
endured intolerable treatment. Exposure to chemicals and malnutrition lead to the deaths of many
workers. With the motive to protect their interests, the U.S. s Center for Intelligence Agency
sponsored an intervention in Arbenz s presidency. A largely committed anti communist coup d etat
successfully overthrew the socialist government, which favored the U.S. s interests.
With the democratic government overthrown, the political instability lead to the raise of military rule
in Guatemala. There would be many military officers that would assume the role of the presidency.
Under the military rule, there were very unfavorable conditions for those that had

Organ Donation
Get him into the O.R. stat! After applying yourself to be a recipient for a donation, you will be added
to the waiting list for that organ. This can take months, if not years. Receiving an organ can be sudden
whenever an organ match has been found for you. We should reevaluate organ donation due to
someone s personal religion, inability to benefit the poor, numerous hospital visits, and potential
endangerment to their own well being. Therefore, in 2009, organ transplants became a demand
everywhere so abruptly that countless nationalities began selling their organs in return for money
(HRSA 1). Eighty one percent of commercial living donors (CLDs) in Egypt spent their Kidney
money within five months after their donation (Budiani Saberi ... Show more content on

Krasnolutska also states that the Israeli eastern European organ trafficking rings extended their reach
to the United States. In July 2009, the Justice Department charged Levy Rosenbaum, an Israeli in New
York, with conspiracy of human organ trafficking. A Federal Bureau of Investigation agent caught
Rosenbaum offering a kidney for $160,000 (Budiani Saberi 37). Laws designed to prevent trafficking
are currently unsuccessful. While prosecutors in places such as Israel, Brazil, Kosovo and Ukraine
have successfully eliminated some of the organ trading gangs, they re still fighting powerful economic
forces. As long as there s a worldwide shortage of legal donors for life saving transplants, the
exploitation of the poor will only grow. Unless governments around the world enforce existing laws
on prohibiting procedures, the traffickers will continue to cultivate a growing legion of impoverished
organ sellers who end up with an immense wad of cash, says Glovin (Budiani Saberi 39 40). As a
result, suspicions of organ trades between Hong Kong and China in 1989 caused the Tiananmen
Square massacre arose. The Amnesty International noted an increase in China s submissions for the
death penalty, and reported on the use of executed prisoners organs without their consent. Dr. Ronald
D. Guttman, a McGill University professor, showed that after 1989, about ninety percent of China s
transplants came from executed prisoners. Along with Ronald Guttman was Forsythe stating that

Who Is Responsible For The Injury Of The Post Surgical...
The case that has been presented in this unit is who is responsible for the injury that the post surgical
patient has suffered. In order to justify who is the party at fault, one must look at all aspect as to what
lead up to the permanent damage to the patient s left leg. Malpractice is negligence by a professional
(Singh, 2006, pp 19). In this case, there has been proven to be negligence, but how many parties
should be held responsible is the question. The standard of care can be different in each facility and it
is up to the nurses to know what the quality of care should be when dealing with patients (Singh,
2006). In this case, I believe that both the night shift nurse and the day shift nurse should be held
accountable for the damage done to this patient.
Negligence can happen for several reasons when it comes to nursing staff. The can be overworked
nurses, to many patients, lack of staffing, or poor documentation. There are four areas that must be
met when trying to determine a malpractice claim. These areas are duty to patient, breach of duty to
patient, injury to patient, and causal relationship between breach of duty and harm or injury (Diemert,
2012, pp 6). Duty to the patient is when a nurse is assigned to a floor or specified rooms that have
patients who require their direct care. They are to make sure that the physician s orders are followed.
Breach of duty to a patient is when the nurse does not follow through with the plan of care or the

Jeune Syndrome Disease
Jeune syndrome is a rare inherited disease that has a significant impact on infants and small children.
As a result of this disease infants with this condition usually experiences difficulty breathing, kidney
abnormalities, and other life threatening issues. Antenatal examination is possible by ultrasound but
specific diagnosis is difficult and seemingly impossible. Individuals are diagnosed at birth after
careful observation of the limbs and chest area. Patients usually die from respiratory failure because of
a very small chest and repeated respiratory infections (Phillips and Van Aalst 2008). There is not a lot
that can be done for patients with Jeune syndrome because scientists are still in the process of
obtaining knowledge about the initial cause and ways to prevent the mutation (Phillips and Van Aalst
2008). It is understood that because this is autosomal recessive disease, meaning both parents must be
carriers.
When it comes to Jeune syndrome the primary problem rose from the disruption of proteins found in
the cilia. The cilia is known as the hair like structures that protrude from the cell membrane and is
responsible for moving the cell they are attached to or moving the liquid that is adjacent to the cell
(Miller et al 2013). Very few people view the cilia as a signaling hub which contains the noncanonical
Wingless (WNT), Hedgehog, and platelet derived growth factor (PDGF) signalling systems, and their
disruption leads to striking developmental defects (Wang et al

Pulse Ox Test
Did you know that heart abnormalities are the most common birth defect? I didn t, until a few weeks
ago. A Facebook friend posted a link to the Cora s Story blog and I casually clicked over to see what it
was about. Cora died suddenly in her mama s arms at just 5 days old from an undetected congenital
heart defect (CHD). I can t imagine suffering such a devastating loss, and I thank my lucky stars for
my kids healthy hearts. But Cora s mother Kristine has turned her pain into a wonderful mission in her
daughter s name: to raise awareness about CHD and how easily it can be detected. With Kristine and
Cora s help, hopefully more CHDs will be caught and treated early, saving babies and children s lives.
Another fact I learned from Cora is how easily many CHDs can be detected. A simple pulse oximetry
test (aka pulse ox ) done 24 48 hours after birth in conjunction with a newborn exam can detect a large
proportion of CHDs, with a low false positive rate. A pulse ox test is noninvasive and very simple: the
reader is typically attached to the baby s toe and determines the oxygen saturation ... Show more

As I mentioned, the test is completely non invasive and hospitals already have the equipment. Portable
pulse ox readers are also available, which means both birth center and homebirth midwives could also
easily carry them. Kristine is working on Cora s behalf to get laws passed nationwide mandating a
pulse ox to be done on every newborn. I applaud her efforts and admire her strength at turning her
pain into an effort to save lives.
What can YOU do? Request this test for your own babies and tell the pregnant moms in your life to
request it when their babies are born. Pass this information on, and tell others to pass it on too. Write
your Congressman and your state representatives and tell them you want pulse ox testing to be
mandatory for all newborns. You might just save a baby s life.

The Similarities and Differences Between a Mesopotamian...
The similarities and differences between the design, construction and environmental performance of a
typical Mesopotamian courtyard and a Roman peristyle house
The idea of courtyard goes back to Neolithic Times. It was conceived for such needs as providing
protection from natural forces : weather, wild life or human invasions. Later on, it was transformed in
functional architecture that can be characterized by its design, structure and environment uses. Apart
from its climatic functions, the cultural aspect has the same importance.
Vittirio Gregotti is describing the courtyard as an architectural act par excellence saying : The
enclosure not only establishes a specific relationship with a specific place but is the principle by ...

The main purpose of the Roman Perystile was of a garden or a beautiful arranged place, where people
were able to have walks or spend time outside the house on their own property. The columns were
built with two aims, the first one was for supporting the roof, and the second one to create a beautiful
architectural space, filled with specific roman details. Contrarily, for the Mesopotamians, this place
were designed only for technical and functional purposes that were supposed to bring sun light and
fresh air into the house, or to keep the temperature cool.
Mesopotamians had the tendency to build their courtyards hidden from the front door view. In order to
protect their house from street dust, they were placing them behind the corner of the passage. First
view from the entrance of an Roman house was the garden, that invited guests to spend time there.
Climate had a big impact on architecture, therefore as a response to the hot humid temperatures,
Mesopotamian courtyards were designed to control the circulation and cooling. Cool air was
channeled by night, by noon rising hot air was used in order to create cooling convention currents, and
by afternoon sun position permitted to created shadows, thus to create more cool currents. This helps
to maintain a normal temperature in summer. The organization was appropriate to that specific climate
as it contributed to creating of a pleasant microclimate by cooling and humidifying the internal

The Negative Effects Of Club Drugs
According to Drug Free World, an estimated 208 million people use illicit drugs internationally. Some
people take them at home or out with friends, but one of the main places drugs are common is on the
dance floor. Club drugs have become increasingly prevalent in our culture and there seems to be no
signs of stopping. With how easily these drugs seem to get into clubs the problem is becoming larger
and larger. These substances, whether its smoked, swallowed, inhaled, or injected, are extremely
dangerous. They are used for their high and hallucinogenic effect but are also used for the purpose of
sexual assault. Club drugs are dangerous substances that have adverse effects on the user s short term
and long term health. The popularity of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
However, everything comes at a price, the short term health effects are: constricted blood vessels,
dilated pupils, nausea, raised temperature and blood pressure, faster heartbeat, tremors and muscle
twitches, and restlessness. The long term effects of cocaine depend on how it is taken. If it is snorted
effects include: loss of sense of smell, nosebleeds, frequent runny nose, and problems with
swallowing. Ingesting orally leads to severe bowel decay from reduced blood flow. If it is injected, the
effects include higher risk of contracting HIV, hepatitis C, and other bloodborne diseases. However,
those who use non needle forms of cocaine are still at risk for STDs because cocaine affects one s
judgement so one may lead to unsafe sexual behavior. Long term effects shared by all forms of
cocaine include: being malnourished due to cocaine s appetite suppressing properties, movement
disorders such as Parkinson s, irritability, restlessness, and severe paranoia which can lead to the loss
of touch with reality and cause auditory hallucinations. Along with all the previously mentioned
effects, if someone becomes dependent on cocaine, withdrawal symptoms include: depression, fatigue,
increased appetite, nightmares, insomnia, and slowed cognitive function. I personally know someone
who has tried cocaine and here s what they said on the matter: It felt like your nose was constantly
dripping. Your mouth becomes extremely numb. The area from your nose to your throat,

The Consequences Of Heroic Research
Heroes produce a recently identified emotion called elevation (Allison 1). Witnessing a person give a
homeless person money creates this feeling of elevation. It s a morally beautiful act that prompts
warmth and love. This occurs more often than people think because most people keep this feeling of
elevation to themselves. Frequently, the social sharing of emotions is not only the basis of strong and
durable relationships, but it s informative as well. A small, heroic act can go an extensive way. Heroes
mend psychic wounds because the consequences of telling or hearing a heroic story create a feeling of
comfort and safety. These stories added purpose to people s lives. Heroes nourish our connections
with other people (Allison 1).

Stereotypes And Judgement Analysis
First impressions, whether positive or negative, can play a critical role in someone s judgement of
other people. Stereotypes can cause a rush to judgement leading to an inaccurate conclusion. There are
six common errors in judgement that can affect your critical thinking process (Bethel University,
2013).
A stereotype is a fine example of a judgement error (Bethel University, 2013). So often, people will
make a quick judgement about someone else strictly based off of appearance or nationality. For
instance, in school, new students may see the different groups of students joined together and assume
that the jocks of the school are big and strong, but not very smart. Meanwhile, people may also
assume that the nerds of the school are ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

incident involving her ex boyfriend in which she stated she saw her driving in town, passed her car to

woman appeared very upset and wished to press charges on the ex boyfriend for these reckless
actions. After speaking to the other party involved, he stated they had ended their relationship, and the
woman did not take the break up well. The male subject stated that she continued trying to convince
him to take her back and resume the relationship, and that when he declined to do so yet again, that
she became so distraught that she began chasing him in her car until she eventually struck his vehicle

  • 2. Hockey Fighting Essay A video of enforcers Daniel Maggio and Brian McGrattan fighting went viral. They were landing punches during the game. Ultimately, the hockey fight led to an unconscious McGrattan. When Justin Abdelakder watched the video, it reminded him of hockey s history of fighting. In the past, fights in hockey were a common occurrence. Hockeyfights.com has said that there has only one fight out of four NHL games this year on average. That means that around 357 fights have occurred out of 1,230 regular game this year. According to TSN network, that means that there have only been 10 fights more than the 720 games shortened 2012 2013 season. The game of hockey has been changing and speed and skill has been changing as well. The enforcers and their fighting ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... As a result, it has virtually taken fighting out of the game of hockey. It is unfortunate, but a brain injury can have a huge impact on the players as well as the families of the players. In one of the football cases with Paul Oliver, he became uncharacteristically violent towards his family because he had developed a brain disease known as encephalopathy. While the fans do love hockey fights and it has served a big role in hockey, the lack of fighting has also made players more honest in the game. The consequences of fighting such as head injury do not make it worth it. NHL and the players have a responsibility to protect the integrity of the game. Abdelkader has remained one of the fighters who keeps it physical on his team. He has stayed willing to fight when needed. Regardless, Abdelkader says that even if they eliminated fighting in hockey, it would not change the game for him. Fighting in hockey has remained one of the traditions in the game that has made it so exciting for fans to watch. Nevertheless, there is less need for fighting, and as a result, you see less ... • 3. Water And Its Effects On Our Lives And The Health Of Our... The commodification of water throughout history has had substantial impacts the way we live our lives and the health of our nation. Initially effluents from towns, various types of mills, and tanneries were channeled to the nearest waterway to be carried downstream and away from the pollution source. This theory of dilution is the solution to pollution worked for a little while but as population grew and the demand for freshwater for humans consumption increased as well Americans learn quickly that this theory was incorrect. The change of heart on this method was highlighted in a court case in New York in 1913. This court case was brought against the village of Moravia where the Board of Education constructed a sewer line from their ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This was very evident in the report by Henry B Ward where he had highlighted that the conditions of the Hudson River in New York had deteriorated so poorly throughout his life that the banks of the river resembled an open sewer or the stretches of a septic tank [3]. Mr. Ward also stated that the conditions along the Hudson River did not require any chemical testing to confirm the volume of pollution that it was blatantly obvious by the form debris on the bottom as well as with materials floating in the water. Unfortunately this was not a remote situation but was discovered in multiple locations along the Hudson River [4]. These cases initially started out in small isolated areas but due to the increase in population as well as expanding industrial complexes nearly waterways the location and magnitude of pollution grew rapidly. • 4. Alcohol Abuse And Alcoholism Abuse The alcohol abuse definition is similar to alcoholism in that in both cases alcohol is causing harm to the drinker s life and those around them. The difference is that those who abuse alcohol, but are not yet alcoholics, typically can put some limitations on their drinking and they have not yet become physically addicted to alcohol. The key to the alcohol abuse definition is not in the amount of alcohol consumed but on how it affects an individual. Alcohol abuse is a psychiatric diagnosis in which there is recurring harmful use of ethanol despite its negative consequence. In 2013 it was reclassified as alcohol use disorder along with alcohol dependence. There are two types of alcohol abuse, those who have anti social and pleasure ... Also, younger family members tend to mimic the alcohol use patterns of their parents, siblings, and other family members. Peers also influence drinking behavior. Some studies shows that regardless of family history of alcoholism, a lack of parental monitoring, severe and recurrent family conflict and poor parent child relationships can contribute to alcohol abuse in adolescents. Children with conduct skills as well as those with little connection to parents, other family members, or school may be at an increased risk for alcohol abuse. Before you seek treatment the first and most important part of the process is that of admitting that you have a problem. Once you have done so then the next step is help and support. Beating an alcohol addiction is a long and painful process. It requires much more than sheer willpower: it requires you to make changes to every aspect of your life and some of that can be more difficult to do than others. But help and support is available so you don t need to do this on your own. Treatments for alcohol addiction are quite varied because there are multiple perspectives for the condition itself. Those who approach alcoholism as a medical condition or disease recommend differing treatments than, for instance, those who approach the condition as one of social choice. Most treatments focus on helping people discontinue their alcohol intake, ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 5. The Five Types Of Government In Ancient Greece Ancient Greece consisted of several hundred polies or city states. Many of them were villages or small towns, but there were two big and powerful Greek polies, Athens and Sparta. Athens was a cultural and economic powerhouse, and the birthplace of democracy. Sparta was an imperial city state, and had two kings (Brand, n.d.). (1) There were five types of f government in Ancient Greece: monarchy, aristocracy, oligarchy, tyranny and democracy. Monarchy Monarchy is undivided rule or absolute sovereignty by a single person (Merriam webster.com, n.d., 1). (2) In the Greek world monarchies were rare, and were distinguishable from a tyranny when the monarch ruled in interest of his people. The most monarchies were Macedonia and Epeiros, where the ruler shared power with assembly. Although Sparta also had a citizen assembly, and two kings, but they were not absolute monarchs. They had great power when they led Spartan army in the war, but in the peace, they were kept in check by Ephors who were elected by assembly. The kings were also members of the Gerousia and were admitted from a young age, so they must have had a significant advantage over the other members who couldn t join until they were 60 (Cartwright, 2013). (3) Aristocracy Aristocracy is government by those considered to be the best or most able people in the state (Dictionary.com, n.d., 3). • 6. Analysis of Setting and Characterization in Greasy Lake ... In his short story Greasy Lake, the lake with the community teenagers create a stereotypical scene of current youth pop culture. Many youth who read this story can find the ironic references and similarities with their lifestyle in today s world. T. Coraghessan Boyle uses the setting of the story to expose a world lacking self discipline and showing immorality amongst a community youth, which can sometimes be rather common today. This also aids in creating an atmosphere that surrounds suspense and impaired judgement to better develop the characters of the story. Boyle is able to achieve this by creating a setting with the story of the Greasy Lake and describing the Lake as both a setting and main character. Greasy Lake is described by the narrator as an aura of possessiveness and suspense to the average reader. However, while somewhat stereotypical, the narrator and his friends see the lake as the most ideal location to get together on late nights. This can be translated as the beginning of setting a scene for a location in which the adolescent youth can meet, with the reference to Bruce Springsteen s words from a song that opens the story: It s about a mile down on the dark side of Route 88 (Boyle, 125). The words from the song create a scene of how the youth had essentially treated the lake as their own place. The image is further made clear when the faint island in the middle of the lake is described as a single ravaged island a hundred yards from ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 7. Lost Girl Analysis Lost Girl was performed at the Oscar G. Brockett Theatre in the F. Loren Winship Building by Texas Theatre and Dance. Written by Kimberly Belflower, the play engaged the audience through its use of projection designs, surprise effects, and sedentary set designs and was well received by adults and students alike. Through these factors, the production was able to relay the message of finding oneself to the audience, and encourage those who are lost to follow Wendy Darling s path to acceptance. Primarily, Lost Girl utilizes digitally projected shadows in the play to offer not only a background for the plot, but also a connection to the movie Peter Pan. As the public is more acquainted with Disney s version of the animated film, the projection ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... When the narrators stated Wendy wrote letters to Peter , instead of acting out the phrase, a platform opened above the stage and poured out letters that Wendy wrote. When the sheets of paper cascaded down, some people let out a gasp of surprise. A few letters even drifted to the front row of seats, and some were picked up by the audience. In effect, this action allowed the audience to have a three dimensional interaction with the play. Previously, a performance usually only integrates the senses of sight and sound, but in this instance people were able to reach out and touch the flying papers. The surprise effect allows Lost Girl to surpass the traditional theatre space, and to allow the audience a deeper immersion into the play. From the engagement, the crumpled up papers not only symbolize Wendy s frustrated attempts in communicating with Peter, but also her incompetence in forgetting the past. Like a sheet of paper, Wendy was able to momentarily fly, but once she reached the ground, she was just like any other girl in the world. Through this effect, the play s message is relayed through surprises, and the public experiences the theme on a deeper level as they not only can see or hear emotions, but can also physically feel ... The major cause of scouring is the increase velocity of the flowing water which takes away the sediments with it causing the formation of scour holes thereby compromising the integrity of the structure. In United States, bridge scour is one of the three main causes of bridge failure and it has been estimated that 60% of all bridge failure results from scour and other hydraulic related causes. One such disaster is the Schoharie Creek Bridge Collapse which took the life of 10 people and caused the bridge related failures of about $30 million. The implementation costs of the recycled tire mats is also unknown but what is known is that the tire mats last longer and require less repair than the riprap. They last on average 32 years. That is 12 years longer than the riprap and will therefore cost that much less when taking all costs into consideration. Due to its robust material and hydrodynamic design, the Scouring ramp is expected to have a significantly longer life span than the tradition Rip Rap approach. Our suggested material for the ramps are similar in strength and oxidation resistant properties as the high strength steel that makes up TLP tendons of deep water oil platforms. The metals used for these anchors can withstand strong ocean currents as wells as oxygen based corrosion. The life span of the ramps if made from the same grade of steel is estimated to last a minimum of 32 years. The tire mats are expected to have an extremely long life span due to rubber strength of car tires. Hence the tire mats are expected to share the same life span of the entire bridge itself. Rip rap, though it is expected to have a long life span as well, the issue of scouring taking place around the rip rap adds significant cost given that eventually, the rock pile would need to be replaced every 2 years or so. A pier that requires 50 cubic meters of rip rap would require 132 tons of concrete rubble costing nearly $300 per replacement. With this data we are able to compare the present worth of the repair and replacement cost of Rip Rap and Scouring ramps over the span of a 32 ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The air is hazy and dense and the smell of food fills every corner. A city that never used to have any of foreign foods, now filled with the aroma and signs of fast food restaurants. As I walked, I realize that there was only one whole food market. Meanwhile, a McDonald s and Kentucky Fried Chicken were seen on multiple corners. Another thing I noticed: the majority of people entering the fast food market are from places that were once filled with only traditionalists. A region where its former citizens used to invest their time in cooking local traditional food and sold them to the public and families. These same communities have now become so westernized that they neglect the traditional side of diet. Instead, everyone now focus on the new fast food market. People are flocking with their families into the fast food restaurants. Watching the differences between those who entered the supermarket and those who entered the McDonalds s, I couldn t help but think about complications minorities in the United States face from the fast food market. I made a very quick connection with the United States because I had an idea of how people in the US especially minorities, suffer from fast food. Some people (fast food victims) in Ghana aren t any better than minorities in the US. The commonness of fast food in Ghana has created multiple jobs to ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The big question is, why do cellphone users choose texting over calling, or calling over texting. The texting vs calling debate has been going on since SMS, short message service aka texts , were created by Neil Papworth in 1992. Many people state that texting is more efficient to the demands of everyday life, but opponents will argue that texting is impersonal and can sometimes lead to the wrong message . Magnificent Pythagorean Paradoxes In Ancient Greece Subsequent to the conquest of Egypt by Alexander the Great, the ancient Greeks established possibly the greatest center of learning at the time in Alexandria. Indeed, history purports that perhaps this great library rivaled even the great library in Athens, especially considering the fact that the Alexandrian library produced such significant mathematical figures as Archimedes and Euclid, the works of whom likely depended on the earlier works of great Greek mathematicians like Thales and Pythagoras (Lahanas, 2016). The premise behind the paradoxes was that the method of describing motion using Pythagorean thought, treating numbers solely as discrete, arguably demonstrated the impossibility of motion. His four paradoxes illustrating this line of thinking are The Dichotomy, Achilles and the Tortoise, The Arrow, and The Stadium. The paradox presented in The Dichotomy is that a race, from beginning to end, is a finite distance. Zeno purported that there are infinitely many half distances, which meant that you could never reach the end, according to Pythagorean thought. This paradox offered a precedent to the idea of the limit of an infinite sequence, in that an infinite number of half distances can add to a finite distance. Achilles and the Tortoise presented a similar paradox about infinite measures within a finite distance, and demonstrated that the boast of Achilles, that he could beat the tortoise even when the tortoise had a head start, could not come to fruition based on Pythagorean thought. The Arrow presented a paradox between the Pythagorean thought, that discrete units of instances make up time, and the premise that if Pythagoreans were correct then the arrow could not move. Thus, claimed Zeno, time must be continuous and not discrete. The Stadium presents a situation which proves that there is no smallest unit of time, as Pythagoreans believed, and therefore time must be both finitely divisible and infinitely divisible (Andrews, Development of calculus: More about the paradoxes, 2016). Although Zeno s arguments were sound, they did not negate the influence that Pythagoras had on the study of mathematics. (40) Plate tectonics theory is the scientific theory that describes the large scale motion of the Earth s lithosphere, which is broken up into tectonic plates. Volcanic landforms are undoubtedly very important in aiding our understanding of plate tectonic theory. However, there is other evidence that must be considered as well. Composite volcanoes are generally formed at destructive plate boundaries as high viscous lava is produced as less dense oceanic crust is ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... However, although there is a lot of evidence from volcanic landforms that can be used to explain plate tectonics theory, there is other important evidence that cannot be ignored. Fossil evidence is very important for our understanding of plate tectonics theory. Similar animal fossils have been found on the South American and African continents. These fossils suggest that the continents were once joined together. Fossils of an extinct reptile, named a Mesosaurus, have been found in southern Africa and South America. Scientists believe that the only explanation for this fossil being found on these two continents is that they were once joined and have become separated due to plate movements. Plant fossils, such as a fossil of the Glossopteris tree have been found in several countries across the Southern Hemisphere such as India, Australia and even Antarctica. The discovery of these fossils prompted scientists to conclude that these countries must once have been joined in one large land mass. The discovery of such fossils as this in Antarctica gives additional weight to this theory as vegetation cannot survive the harsh Antarctic environment suggesting that if vegetation has been able to grow previously, the positioning of the continent must have been ... In order to justify who is the party at fault, one must look at all aspect as to what lead up to the permanent damage to the patient s left leg. Malpractice is negligence by a professional (Singh, 2006, pp 19). In this case, there has been proven to be negligence, but how many parties should be held responsible is the question. The standard of care can be different in each facility and it is up to the nurses to know what the quality of care should be when dealing with patients (Singh, 2006). In this case, I believe that both the night shift nurse and the day shift nurse should be held accountable for the damage done to this patient. Negligence can happen for several reasons when it comes to nursing staff. The can be overworked nurses, to many patients, lack of staffing, or poor documentation. There are four areas that must be met when trying to determine a malpractice claim. These areas are duty to patient, breach of duty to patient, injury to patient, and causal relationship between breach of duty and harm or injury (Diemert, 2012, pp 6).
