Jeff Jacoby s Bring Back Flogging Essay
Jeff Jacoby s Bring Back Flogging
This essay by Jeff Jacoby illustrates an authors use of ironic sarcasm otherwise known as satire to
defend and illustrate his platform on his position. Jacoby uses in this essay verbal irony (persuasion in
the form of ridicule). In the irony of this sort there is a contrast between what is said and what is
meant.
Jacoby s claim in simple is he believes that flogging should be brought back to replace the more
standard conventional method of the imprisonment of violent and non violent offenders. His grounds
for the revival of flogging stems back to his initial mention of the Puritan punishment system. He cites
how in 1632 Richard Hopkins was Flogged and branded for selling guns and weapons ... Show more

Jacoby s argument of flogging attempts to show how it can be more productive over the conventional
method of punishment seemingly the only way, imprisonment. His beliefs are that public whippings
will prevent youths and first time offenders from becoming lifelong felons. The benefits deduced from
his argument for flogging assuming it proves to be conclusive would be such. Lowering the rate of
felons in jail, freeing up space for the more violent offenders. The appalling estimated amount of thirty
thousand a year per inmate would be saved. A public whipping would not be associated with respect
and sign of manhood or status symbol that prison serves for many offenders. Flogging he believes
would deter many of the first time offenders and youth along with preventing them from being repeat
and long time offenders. The pain, scars, and embarrassment of public whippings would far exceed the
value or risk reward benefit of doing a petty crime thus forcing people to think about their actions
before they did it. Jacoby contends that he is unsure whether being whipped is more degrading that
being caged. At the end of his essay he draws attention to the point of the terrible risk of being raped
in prison as an argument in favor of replacing imprisonment with flogging.
I think that Jacoby appeals to the readers sense of sympathy for the wrongly

The Norton Reader
Answers from On Dumpster Diving (pg. 28) 1. Eighner organizes his essay by breaking down how
and why scavengers do what they do to survive. He begins his essay with how he became a scavenger
and follows that with how to scavenge the best, safest way possible. He communicates how to choose
the right dumpsters to dive into, how to determine if food is edible, and whether items are worth
holding onto. I believe Eighner chose this type of organization throughout his essay to ease readers
into the idea of scavenging through dumpsters. I feel like Eighner is almost trying to convince reader
that s scavenging through dumpster is not that bad, so if he shed the activities in a positive ... Show

Answers from Beauty: When the Other Dancer is the Self (pg.44) 1. Walker put the word accident in
quotations throughout her essay because her getting shot in the eye by her brother s BB gun was not
much of an accident. The story that was told to her parents suggested that a wire was responsible for
her eye injury. I truly believe that Walker has come to peace with the accident and its consequences
after her daughter had noticed her scar on her eye. She expressed her fear of the day her daughter
would be old enough to notice her mother s face was different than everyone else s. Once her daughter
had finally observed her physical flaw, she realized that it would not change how her daughter felt
about her. 2. Throughout the essay, Walker chooses particular moments in her life to show how much
she was affected by her injury throughout her entire life. She selects moments from different ages to
show that time never healed how she felt about her injury. At every age, she came across moments that
made her feel bad about the way she looked, whether it was from mean kids at school or taking a
picture for a cover story. All the experiences she described related to her theme of not changing
because although she was going through changes by growing up, her thoughts regarding her injury
never did. Once she changed on the outside, she confidence about herself changed as well, so all the
experiences she presented shows that she actually had

Advantage And Disadvantage Of Inverter
Abstract A novel interleaved dual buck full bridge three level inverter (IDBFTI) is proposed for the
grid connected system
in this paper. It retains the advantages of interleaved parallel technology for inverter as follows:
reducing the output ripple current and the total harmonic distortion of the output current, increasing
the power density of system, and reducing the current stress and thermal stress of power devices.
Besides, it can solve the problem of zero sequence circulation current (ZSCC) in interleaved inverter
system by the circuit structure, and it also has the advantages of no shoot through problem, no reverse
recovery of the body diode, and three level output. The interleaved inverter circuits share two power
frequency switches, which are resized for each specific application, and it is easier to extend the
system by improving current capability of the two switches. The working principle of this system is
introduced in detail and a 2 kW experimental prototype has been established and tested. Test results
verify the principle and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Here, the interleaved half bridge inverter is taken for example to analyze the path of circulation
current. As shown in Fig.6, when the interleaved parallel strategy is used, switch S1 of half bridge
inverter A and the switch S4 of half bridge inverter B can conduct during the interval [t0, t1] in Fig.7.
When working in discontinuous current mode, the inverter will generate circulation current ibias
(ibias=iL2), which flows through two half bridge inverters, and the current iL2 of half bridge inverter
B is reversed, so the current flowing through the load io (io =iL1+iL2) will be reduced relatively.
Consequently there will be several problems such as additional power losses, lower efficiency, and
increased device stress. However, switch S1 of IDBFTI just works in the positive half cycle of output
current and switch Sb of IDBFTI is opposite, so they will

Juxtaposition In Bless Me Ultima
Bright white light of the New Mexico sun bathes and protects the small town of Guadalupe. Like his
parents and older brothers before him, young Antonio struggles to find his true inner self as his parents
push two family names on him. In Anaya Rudolfo s novel Bless Me, Ultima, Antonio is ultimately a
mixture between a Marez and a Luna, as seen through the juxtaposition between the symbols of the
moon and the sea, as well as God and the Golden Carp. The moon that represents the Luna family, and
sea which connects to the Marez, are forces which push Antonio to make his final decision about
family. In the beginning, Antonio tries his hardest to please both of his parents by combining their
dissimilar ideas about his future. Although Antonio begins his life thinking he is a mixture of both
parents heritage, the juxtaposition of the symbols in the book changes his mind on that, It is the blood
of the Lunas to be quiet... They are quiet like the moon And it is the blood of the Márez to be wild,
like the ocean from which they take their name (Anaya 41). Aside from the obvious fact that the
Spanish word for moon is, in fact, Luna, that family represents the moon. The calmness of said moon
contrasts with the wild men of the sea. Maria is controlling of her family, similar to how the moon
controls the sea. Each contrasting idea propels Antonio in separate directions either towards the Luna
priests or the Marez vaqueros. Despite the fact that his mother wants to make a priest out of Antonio,
the other side of his family thinks in their own unique way, He is a Marez... His forefathers were
conquistadors, men as restless as the seas they sailed (Anaya 6). Once again, the contrary sides of
Antonio s family pull him to the sea instead of the moon. The true struggle Antonio goes through is
choosing his own destiny, even with the strong influences of both the moon and sea. Suddenly he has
a moment of realization and tells his uncle, I am Marez, ... That is right, you are a Marez first, then
Luna (Anaya 250). Even though he may think he is Marez first, he still lives with Luna blood coursing
through his veins. After all, he skipped a grade, which makes him a boy of learning. Then again, his
adoration of nature proves

This essay has touched on some factors that contributed to the Napoleon s victory at Battle of
Austerlitz. It has been shown that implementing of both, maintenance of morale and the elements of
surprise acted as force multipli ers. What Napoleon may have lacked in numbers, was made up for
maintenance of morale and elements of surprise, thus, were factors most convincing attributed to
Napoleon s victory at Austerlitz by analysing the varying opinions on an issue which is unlikely ever

The Huang He and Indus River Valley Comparison Early societies such as East Asia and Southern
Asia, began to emerge around rivers that later turned these societies into Civilizations. A number of
people learned to use the rivers as natural resources and used river water for crops that needed
irrigation, built complex irrigation systems that made villages grow and flourish. The earliest societies
in Asia, was South Asia, where Dravidian cultivators decided to build a neolithic society west of the
Indus River Valley, which by 7000 B.C.E agriculture spread rapidly and so did the population. Aryan

Loneliness And Pain With A Drizzle Of Mixed Emotions About...
Heartache and pain with a drizzle of mixed emotions about life as an independent woman is what Kate
Chopin was confronted with and it is what she wrote about in her short stories. We are talking about a
woman before her time that challenged all to see the world through representations of reality. She was
able to see the world for what it was during a difficult time for people of color and women battling to
have equal rights. Repeatedly, she wrote about death, exotic thoughts, superficial love and real life
issues however, the stories she wrote often portrayed some form of the life events and struggles that
she in fact faced herself. As a young girl Kate was exposed to, and witnessed many events that helped
to influence her unique writing ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

with the region in which she lived, the social class of her real life husband and slavery. When Kate
was nineteen she married Oscar Chopin whom was a successful cotton broker, and over the next ten
years she and Oscar had children and this seemed to have brought joy to Kate and Oscar s life. (pg.

both met and married a successful man, they both lived in Louisiana, have a child or children and
seem to be happy. Even though Kate s and Desiree s story seem to take a different turn of events for a
moment in time there are items that need to be brought to light. Kate brings the area of Louisiana to

In This Paper, I Plan To Argue The Ideas By Edward Conard,
In this paper, I plan to argue the ideas by Edward Conard, in his argument that we don t need more
humanities major in our academic system. In specific, this paper will explore the writer s claims, the
gaps in his arguments and counter arguments in this topic. My argument is important because I will
challenge Conard s article with the self fashioning s article by Keohane.
In Conard s article, he demonstrates to answer the question whether or not we need more humanities.
His answer is that we should be focus on technology and innovation to have a better living standards.
(41) His main argument is that innovation and technology are the key to driver of the American
economy and there is a need for more talents and expertise in this area. ... Show more content on

(43) Schools give one the time and materials to achieve all what one desire in life. (43) In the same
way, I would challenge the students to leverage their energy and time to become the best they can be
in their life. (43)
This paper also supports the self fashioning article by Keohane. Self fashioning builds the character,
personality, and focus on the student. A self fashioned student is more likely to succeed in life in
whichever line of specialization he chooses. Likewise, I disagree with Conard on the point that
innovation and technology are more likely to bring success to the student. From experience, people
who know their personality and character are able to use in their skills, time and education to be the
best in whichever field, whether in technology and innovation or humanities. In my view, success and
failure are not a factor of chosen line of specialization rather, it is a factor of hard work and
determination to create a change. Self fashioning is more fundamental and basic education, like
authority, and intelligence and it is determined by how people deal with small and basic things in life.
Things like cleaning, washing, and taking care of oneself are more important that education when it
comes to self fashioning.
In my life, the most common basic things derive from self fashioning. They include taking care of
oneself through right

Essay on The Progressive Movement
The Progressive Movement (ca. 1890s 1910s)
Even more energetic a sphere of historical controversy than that over the Populists is the historians
argument over the Progressive movement. The Progressives were a heterogeneous collection of
reformers. Active chiefly in the nation s cities and the urban mass media (and in the legislatures of
such states as Wisconsin and New York), the Progressives carried out efforts to reform American
society and governance on all fronts. They numbered among their ranks social Progressives (such as
Jane Addams, the founder of the Hull House settlement movement), economic Progressives (such as
Richard Ely, the noted Wisconsin economist who emphasized the need to prevent great concentrations

This new thinking took various forms including the use of local, state, and national government to
protect workers from unsafe working conditions, to guard consumers against unsafe products, and to
bring order and system to the growing, ever more complex economic system. As noted above,
however, a division emerged between nationalist Progressives led by Theodore Roosevelt, who
conceived the nation as a fully integrated economic, social, and political unit requiring national
solutions to national problems, and localist Progressives led by Woodrow Wilson and Louis D.
Brandeis, who believed that mere bigness was itself a dangerous threat to American liberty, and that
solutions to the problems of American life were best given effect by state and local government.
Progressives built on some of the ideas of the Populists, advocating greater democracy and
accountability at all levels of government. Progressive initiatives and inventions in government
included such devices as the referendum (by which the electorate would decide directly on major
public questions), the initiative (by which the electorate could instruct their elected representatives to
consider legislative measures), and the recall (by which the electorate could topple officials, for
malfeasance or faith ithlessness to the interests of those they represented, before their terms of office
were up). The Progressives also united to amend

Whenever I bring clouds over the earth and the rainbow appears in the clouds, I will remember my
covenant between me and you and all living creatures of every kind. Never again will the waters
become a flood to destroy all life. Whenever the rainbow appears in the clouds, I will see it and
remember the everlasting covenant between God and all living creatures of every kind on the earth. So
God said to Noah, This is the sign of the covenant I have established between me and all life on the
earth.
When Adam and Eve sinned, it did not make God happy. So in order to cleanse the earth, He had
Noah gather up two of every animal and make an arc for the animals and Noah s family. God then
began to flood the earth. Since Noah was faithful, God kept him and his family safe from the flood.
Then God put a big rainbow in the sky to remind us that He would never do that again. This rainbow
reminds us that when we are in times of trouble, God will protect us.
The whole world will never again be covered over by water, but that doesn t mean we won t have
trouble in this life. Our world is full of trouble. Some kids see this trouble every day at home. They

A Leader Who Doesn t Have Knowledge Of The Best Person As...
Leadership is a term on which no one can reach a consensus as it carries a different meaning and
weightage for each individual. Some people may consider a person as their leader who is capable of
taking them away from hardships or caring for them, or some people may consider a man steeped in
wisdom and learning to be a leader. Difference notwithstanding, there still seems to be some
commonality in all the perspectives behind the definition, which is related to choosing a best of the
best person as their leader. The simple bottom line is that, nobody wants to have a person as his leader
who doesn t have knowledge of the needs and aspirations of his people or who is not blessed with a
certain temperament foe bearing hardships for his people, nor a vision for where they should be or
how they should grow and influence the world around them.
As the founder of tech startup, it is only natural for me to pick a leader who is a true technological
visionary. It was not enough to simply pick someone who created innovative products, or created and
ran a billion dollar company. For me it would have to be someone with the vision to shape the future
and world around him, a person who could see how his works would directly impact the trajectory of
the world and its impact on the human race at large. A true visionary. Therefore, for the purpose of this
assignment I have chosen to perform a study to Elon Musk, the business magnate, engineer and

The Meatpacking Industry In Upton Sinclair s The Jungle
A muckraker, an investigative journalist that draws attention to problems, is not particularly what I

changed the American food industry for the better by exposing the meatpacking industry. The Jungle,
my first successful novel out of many failed ones, used Jurgis Rudkus, an immigrant from Lithuania
who got a job in meatpacking, to uncover the unfortunate truth of the industry. It all started when my
Socialist contacts told me to go for a journaling job in Chicago to write about meatpacking, out of
which I came up with the novel. After being published in 1906 and selling millions of copies

The Essence Of All Art
The essence of all art is to have pleasure in giving pleasure (Baryshnikov). Music and dance, whether

most civilizations have shared the practice of music and dance amongst other complimentary art

lives that will be of more significance to the Confederacy then the Union, as they have a larger
population to pull troops from. The Battle of Antietam was fought in the city of Sharpsburg, Maryland

Now the Union army had one major advantage, which you can also see throughout the whole war, and
that is the sheer numbers the Union had and could produce compared to the Confederacy. In the Battle
of Antietam, the Union army consisted of 65,000 men, where as the Confederacy only consisted of
40,000. One huge advantage that the Union had in this before the battle is originally General Robert E.
Lee planned on fighting somewhere else, but Confederate curries lose the opord for the attack which
Union cavalry found bringing it back to General McClellan giving him a massive advantage. Another
advantage the Union army has in this battle is the battle occurred in Maryland, which is Union
territory giving them the better advantage of using the terrain to their advantage. The beginning of the
battle started at the Battle of South Mountain. This was an attack led by 38,000 Union soldiers against
only 12,000 defending Confederate troops, where the Confederate soldiers ended up being pushed
back around dusk before the main battle began. By the end of this pre battle the Union ended up with
2,500 Union casualties and the Confederate taking a loss of 3,800 casualties. The significant factor of
this was General Lee made it look like he outnumbered General McClellan, but if he were to use his

Dieting Has Become A Major Fad
Dieting has become a major fad in our society, and in 2010, 54% of adults said that they were
currently on a diet ( 23 ). These people were determined to get rid of the thing that was holding them
back. People focus on changing the things that they can see, but if they could see their technology
usage they might want to find a way to change what is holding them back even more. As of January
2014, ninety percent of Americans owned a smartphone, and twenty nine percent said they could not
imagine living without their cell phone ( Mobile ). These numbers continue to climb and the grip that
these gadgets have on society continues to get stronger. One possible solution to cutting back on
electronics is following a technology diet. Just as a food diet focuses on cutting calorie intake, a
technology diet focuses on slowly chipping away at the extreme technology usage to a moderate
amount.
A process of steps should be taken to successfully achieve a moderate consumption of technology.
First, start off by setting goals. This is for the dieter to decide what they want to achieve from doing

Essay on Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets
Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets
The title of my book is Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets. It is written by J.K. Rowling. I really
liked this book. This book is a fiction book. That of course means it s not true.
Harry Potter is a twelve year old boy whose parents were killed by Voldemort. Harry has a scar shaped
like a lighting bolt on his forehead. He has black hair, like his father, and green eyes, like his mother.
Ron Weasley is a red haired, freckled faced boy. Ron is Harry s best friend. He is very poor and has
five older brothers and a younger sister. Hermione Granger is Harry and Ron s other friend. She has
muggle parents. She has bushy brown hair. She is ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
He was not in Diagon Alley, but Knockturn Alley. He was in an old store, Draco Malfoy and his father
came in to sell so stuff. Harry hid just in time, so Draco couldn t see him. The Malfoys left, Harry got
out of the store. The half giant, Hagrid, helped Harry find the Weasleys. They went to the bank,
Gringotts, for money to buy their books. Next, they went to Flourish and Blotts, the bookstore, where
Gilderoy Lockhart, a famous wizard, was signing books. They got their books and went back to the
Burrow. A few days later, they all packed their stuff up and took the flying car to the station. Everyone
was through, but Ron and Harry, they ran into it and hit hard, the barrier had closed, they waited for a
few minutes and went to the car. Ron decided to fly the car to school. They were landing when they
mashed into a tree. The tree started punching the car. The car fell, threw them out and drove off. Ron s
wand broke on the end.
The next morning, Ron got a Howler from his mom. The y went to Herbology where they repotted
Mandrakes. Harry was going to Quidditch practice, after a few minutes the Slytherin team came to the
field. They said they had to train their new Seeker, Draco Malfoy. Draco s father bought the whole
team new Nimbus Two Thousand and Ones. Hermione got mad and told Draco what she thought of

John Keats in his poem refers to it like as if it was a person when he says thy hair soft lifted by the
winnowing wind saying that it lifts your hair and on the line before it is wrote thee sitting careless on a
granary floor I believe this also refers to a person as we aren t perfect and people are careless so he
could be referring to it as a kind of lazy person who just sits around all day looking beautiful. A few
lines further on it says and sometimes like a gleaner thou dost keep this meaning that when it picks
things up it picks them up and once again referring to a person on how they pick things up.
John Keats seems to go into detail in the surroundings of Autumn when he mentions the moss`d
cottage trees and the cyder press saying this I think it means he likes that way of life or that he used to
live like that and knows what the experience is like.
In the next poem which is called autumn and is wrote by John Clare.

Gattegno And The Silent Way
Caleb Gattegno (1911 1988), one of the most prominent and productive educators of the twentieth
century, is best known for his innovative approaches to teaching and learning foreign languages (The
Silent Way). In 1972, Caleb Gattegno introduced The Silent Way, that is, a language teaching method
whose basic concept is that the teacher should remain silent much of the time, thus its name while the
students speak as much as possible. In the same way, Gattegno was under the impression that the
teacher should focus on the way students learn more often rather than how to teach. In fact, he
expressed support for language learning by problem solving, creative, discovering activity and all that,
which is directly opposed to drills such as seen in audiolingualism. He, on the other hand, contends
that students could naturally earn a new language like a child, through perception, awareness,
creativity, and other mental processes. Besides being critical of linguistic theory, he devoted his
thinking to a pedagogical perspective called the subordination of teaching to learning in that learners
demands are placed at the center of teaching, so teaching is subordinate or dependent to learning.
Gattegno holds that understanding the spirit of a language that ... Show more content on

Aleut And Inuit Culture
The Native Americans had been in North and South American for thousands of years before
Christopher Columbus was credited with the discovery. Back when the continents were still
connected, the Natives found their way across a bridge that connected Asia and Alaska. An estimated
50 million people were living in the Americas at the time Columbus found land in the Bahamas. Of
these 50 million people living in the Americas, some 10 million or so were living in what is now
considered the United States. Time went on and these people migrated south and east, making
adjustments as the climate changed. There are ten different culture areas that the North America is

All organizations, be it business, educational or government are social systems. These are run by
people, Example: Industrial organization, is a combination of men, money, machinery, material and
management. The functioning of an organization depends upon how people work or behave in the
organization.
The scientific management came into existence to focus on behavioural aspects of management.
Failure of scientific management gave birth to human relation movement. It was founded on more
emphasis on workers cooperation and moral. The study of human relations is not a new phenomenon.

Excessive absences often coincide with poor performance, high turnover rates and low organisational
commitment.
What is an acceptable level of absence?
The diversity and nature of organisations means that there is no optimum or standard level of
acceptable workplace absence that is applicable. Each organisation is best placed to determine when
workplace absence rates require investigation and management. If an organisations thinks that there is
a problem, then it is worth investigating. It is important that an organisation looks for trends and
patterns. An acceptable average absence rate may mask trends and patterns in certain divisions or
individuals.
Causes of Workplace Absence
Understanding the cause of workplace absence is not always straightforward absence behaviour is
variable and complex. For the same individual, absence is likely to have different causes at different
times and in different contexts. In broad terms, there are three major influences on attendance: Illness
or injury Non work related factors (e.g. emergencies) Motivation Attitudes and behaviours associated
with a lack of motivation to attend the workplace (e.g. low job satisfaction, non commitment to the
organisation, workplace tension)
Illness and injury does not always arise from the individual s personal circumstances, but can also be
the result of work factors. For example,

Role of Ordinary Germans in the Holocaust
The role of ordinary Germans in the Holocaust is that of bystanders. The people of Germany watched
on, without protest, as the Jewish people were murdered. Small and large jobs such as engineering and
railway work contributed to the operation of the Holocaust and the murdering of Jews. The
manipulation of the German people, through racist and anti Semitic propaganda, speeches and polices
from Hitler, meant that millions of Germans backed the plans to rid the nation of Jews. The idea that
the Jews were responsible for economic, social and political issues was endorsed and it led to the idea
that their banishment would lead Germany into a brighter future. Many people did not intend on

the propaganda of the time to have refused to have carried out the orders [he] had been given Whether
or not it can account for it, this manipulation of strategic propaganda could have influenced why
Germans either became a part of the Holocaust or simply chose to ignore it.
The lack of resistance and ignorance of the ordinary German population cost many million Jewish
lives. The Nazi party s desire for popularity and support meant that if there was a protest, actions
would be taken to keep the public happy, or quiet, with minimal loss of reputation and status. In other
words, it meant that the people could win. One successful attempt of protest proved that this theory
would have worked. The Rosenstrasse Protest that occurred on the 27th of February 1943 led to the
release of several hundred Jewish men from a Gestapo headquarters. This symbolic protest
highlighted the fact that if the public were to protest, the execution of Jews could have been slowed or
even halted. Despite this, the Rosenstrasse Protest remained the only large protest against the
Holocaust throughout its entire duration. This means that the German population continued to ignore
and become passive bystanders of the genocide happening around

Five Forces Analysis Video Gaming
Five Forces Analysis of the Video Game Industry The five forces that drive industry competition, a
model established by Michael Porter, are; threat of substitution, threat of new entrants, bargaining
power of suppliers, bargaining power of buyers, and intensity of rivalry. The video game industry
must deal with all five of these forces. The analysis of the strength of these five forces within the
video game industry will help to draw a conclusion as to whether or not it is an attractive industry for
Sony to be in. The threat of substitutes in the video game industry is relatively low. Most customers
are looking for a console that they can play games on and there really isn t much else to choose from.
One could say that computer ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The main suppliers in the video game industry are the game makers. These companies pay a royalty
fee to the company that makes the console. Game makers have the decision to make certain games
exclusively for one console if they are paid enough money, for example Halo made for the Xbox, or
make them available on many different platforms. This threat is also moderate for the game industry.
The larger the variety of games as well as the better the quality the more likely a customer is to buy
one game console over another. The fourth force is that of the bargaining power of the buyers. In the
video game industry the buyers do not have very much power, thus making this a weak threat. The
buyers do not have much power because the video game industry does not consist of many players.
The lack in the customers choices means that they are willing to pay a little more money to get such
an item. The fifth and final force is that of the intensity of rivalry. This is the strongest force in the
video game industry. Nintendo was very strategic in targeting an audience that Microsoft and Sony
neglected. While Microsoft and Sony focused on the typical gamers, males ages 18 34, Nintendo
focused on a broader audience everyone when creating their Wii. In the video game industry rivalry
Microsoft and Sony are battling for the same market, while Nintendo has much of its audience all to
itself. This is why

Why I Became A Gang Member
Before I was a mathematics major, a tutor in college for math and physics, or even a high school
graduate, I was a gang member. I belonged to a local street gang in my community since the age of
fifteen. I have survived, seen, and done things that people only see in movies. I got involved with
gangs at the young age of eleven. Growing up in my neighborhood I didn t really have a choice I got
raised into it, I became a product of my environment influenced by the streets.
At school in the classroom I was always a very intelligent person, a 4.0 student. However, during
lunch time and after school I was a gang leader. My teachers knew it and never could understand why.
They tried to give me advise but I never listened to anyone. I myself did not understand why I was a
gang member. All I knew was people respected me and I was no longer a nerd people picked on.
I was known to be a violent and aggressive person, always looking for a fight in school. I felt invisible
with my reputation people knew I knew how to box and wouldn t mess with me. Along with the
fellow gang members when I spoke they listened and no one was of the contrary. At home however, I
was not of charge. My mom always seemed to be mad so I disliked to be home, I instead roamed the
streets witch had made me the alpha.
I never knew what being a gangster would lead up to, never crossed my mind the change it would
bring to my life so far it had only positive impacts. Girls thought I was cool for the first time and no

The Effect of Politics and Race on Identity of Puerto Ricans
As is present in many articles we read about Spanish rule and American rule, there were always

Muslim occupation of Spain, further complicated race interaction in Puerto Rico. The Ferré novel

is going to be a plebiscite to see what the inhabitants of the island of Puerto Rico wish as their
political status. To view more on this plebiscite, there is a site of the Puerto Rican Herald that
discusses Sunday. The last sentence of Fernandez s book poignantly states the large contradiction I

González says that you can not discuss Puerto Rican identity without including elements of class and
race. They are fundamental construction elements. In Morris book, she documents a commonwealth

Labelling Theories Contribution to the Sociological...
Labelling Theories Contribution to the Sociological Understanding of Crime and Deviance Becker is
the main sociologist studying labelling theory on deviance, he argues that social groups create
deviance by making the rules whose infraction constitutes deviance. Meaning acts only become
deviant when observers perceive it and define it as deviant. An example of this would be the act of
nudity, it is accepted in the bedroom between husband and wife or on a nudist camp, but when a
stranger was to enter the bedroom, or someone was to streak across a sporting event, others would
usually see this as deviant, and this deviancy would become a label on the individual. Several factors
affect what the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Which in turn could turn into a self fulfilling prophecy because of being identified with the label and it
becomes controlling. Once these steps have occurred, what Becker describes as the deviant career is
completed when the individual joins an organised deviant group and thus accepting their identity of
being deviant. However, this is not by any means inevitable and some of those who started out as
convicts or drug addicts can become straight and get jobs or quit their habits. When Becker identified
that he took a sequential approach he means how he explains deviance and at any stage in the
sequence of his explanation it is possible that the deviant will re enter conventional society. Lemmert
also uses the interactionist perspective in his view of labelling, outlining primary and secondary
deviance, primary being the act before it is publicly labelled and secondary being the response of the
individual or deviant to the reactions of others in society. But he sees the agents of social control to
blame for deviance rather than the traditional views of the blame lying with the deviant individual or
group. This labelling theory has contributed two concepts to help understand the relationship between
media and crime: · Deviancy amplification, Lesley Wilkins points out that a response to deviant acts
by media and the police can actually

Total Quality Management in Construction
Total Quality Management In Construction
The major new element in world market competition is quality. During the 1970 s and 1980 s, the

greater customer satisfaction. It was the result of using the management principles of total quality

If well crafted, the vision statement can serve through a torrent of change in product and service
technology. The strategic vision needs to consider both the external customer and the employees, but
should lack a defining or differentiating phrase between them. For example, General Motors provides
all employees a card with its strategic vision, including a cause effect diagram that indicates the
importance of team work (figure 2). Simply stating a vision is not enough. It needs to be demonstrated
by the actions of the executives, managers , superiors, foremen, and individuals.
It should be done continuously in all their actions and initiatives. Moreover, deliberation must be
exercised in developing these goals and strategies. They must reflect the values and culture of the
work force. While top management commitment is essential, managers should realize when to lead
and when to get out of the way. In a sense quality management is management from the bottom up.
An atmosphere of responsibility must be created toward the customer for whatever product is
produced or service is rendered (fig.3, below).
2. Barrier Removal It is inevitable that change will be resisted. In fact, a great deal of effort in quality
management is expended in overcoming such resistance, usually by allowing change to come from
individuals directly involved, rather from management. The whole idea of continuous improvement
leads to continuous change.

as well as textile and printing machinery. Many displayed objects were instruments of war such as a
gun carried on the backs of three dummy men. Warship firms displayed models of their scouts,
destroyers, armed cruisers and torpedo boats. War relics included an astrolabe of 1578, the barge of
the great Napoleon, the flat bottomed boats which the French used when they captured Algiers, and
some of the small cannons used on the gunwales of eighteenth century warships.
Numerous modern inventions were also featured. The steel and iron industry displayed flywheels, and
suction producers, while railway companies made a model of a Scenic Railway outside. The place of
honor in the French hall was taken by the great Pont à Mousson blast furnace. The London Electricity
Companies demonstrated modern cooking with electric range and kettles, and showed sewing
machines.
One of the great luxuries in the building was a free rest room, in the middle of which was a pleasant
fountain. The Franco British Exhibition: illustrated review commented on this idea: Remembering the
general comfortless ness of the grounds, it was a stroke of real genius to put that oasis of rest in the
centre of the grim and dour Machinery Halls.
The exhibition lasted from May 14 to October 31, 1908. The

  • 2. Jeff Jacoby s Bring Back Flogging Essay Jeff Jacoby s Bring Back Flogging This essay by Jeff Jacoby illustrates an authors use of ironic sarcasm otherwise known as satire to defend and illustrate his platform on his position. Jacoby uses in this essay verbal irony (persuasion in the form of ridicule). In the irony of this sort there is a contrast between what is said and what is meant. Jacoby s claim in simple is he believes that flogging should be brought back to replace the more standard conventional method of the imprisonment of violent and non violent offenders. His grounds for the revival of flogging stems back to his initial mention of the Puritan punishment system. He cites how in 1632 Richard Hopkins was Flogged and branded for selling guns and weapons ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Jacoby s argument of flogging attempts to show how it can be more productive over the conventional method of punishment seemingly the only way, imprisonment. His beliefs are that public whippings will prevent youths and first time offenders from becoming lifelong felons. The benefits deduced from his argument for flogging assuming it proves to be conclusive would be such. Lowering the rate of felons in jail, freeing up space for the more violent offenders. The appalling estimated amount of thirty thousand a year per inmate would be saved. A public whipping would not be associated with respect and sign of manhood or status symbol that prison serves for many offenders. Flogging he believes would deter many of the first time offenders and youth along with preventing them from being repeat and long time offenders. The pain, scars, and embarrassment of public whippings would far exceed the value or risk reward benefit of doing a petty crime thus forcing people to think about their actions before they did it. Jacoby contends that he is unsure whether being whipped is more degrading that being caged. At the end of his essay he draws attention to the point of the terrible risk of being raped in prison as an argument in favor of replacing imprisonment with flogging. I think that Jacoby appeals to the readers sense of sympathy for the wrongly ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. Dunni Essay Gina Mansour English 111 1/24/2013 The Norton Reader Answers from On Dumpster Diving (pg. 28) 1. Eighner organizes his essay by breaking down how and why scavengers do what they do to survive. He begins his essay with how he became a scavenger and follows that with how to scavenge the best, safest way possible. He communicates how to choose the right dumpsters to dive into, how to determine if food is edible, and whether items are worth holding onto. I believe Eighner chose this type of organization throughout his essay to ease readers into the idea of scavenging through dumpsters. I feel like Eighner is almost trying to convince reader that s scavenging through dumpster is not that bad, so if he shed the activities in a positive ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Answers from Beauty: When the Other Dancer is the Self (pg.44) 1. Walker put the word accident in quotations throughout her essay because her getting shot in the eye by her brother s BB gun was not much of an accident. The story that was told to her parents suggested that a wire was responsible for her eye injury. I truly believe that Walker has come to peace with the accident and its consequences after her daughter had noticed her scar on her eye. She expressed her fear of the day her daughter would be old enough to notice her mother s face was different than everyone else s. Once her daughter had finally observed her physical flaw, she realized that it would not change how her daughter felt about her. 2. Throughout the essay, Walker chooses particular moments in her life to show how much she was affected by her injury throughout her entire life. She selects moments from different ages to show that time never healed how she felt about her injury. At every age, she came across moments that made her feel bad about the way she looked, whether it was from mean kids at school or taking a picture for a cover story. All the experiences she described related to her theme of not changing because although she was going through changes by growing up, her thoughts regarding her injury never did. Once she changed on the outside, she confidence about herself changed as well, so all the experiences she presented shows that she actually had ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 4. Advantage And Disadvantage Of Inverter Abstract A novel interleaved dual buck full bridge three level inverter (IDBFTI) is proposed for the grid connected system in this paper. It retains the advantages of interleaved parallel technology for inverter as follows: reducing the output ripple current and the total harmonic distortion of the output current, increasing the power density of system, and reducing the current stress and thermal stress of power devices. Besides, it can solve the problem of zero sequence circulation current (ZSCC) in interleaved inverter system by the circuit structure, and it also has the advantages of no shoot through problem, no reverse recovery of the body diode, and three level output. The interleaved inverter circuits share two power frequency switches, which are resized for each specific application, and it is easier to extend the system by improving current capability of the two switches. The working principle of this system is introduced in detail and a 2 kW experimental prototype has been established and tested. Test results verify the principle and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Here, the interleaved half bridge inverter is taken for example to analyze the path of circulation current. As shown in Fig.6, when the interleaved parallel strategy is used, switch S1 of half bridge inverter A and the switch S4 of half bridge inverter B can conduct during the interval [t0, t1] in Fig.7. When working in discontinuous current mode, the inverter will generate circulation current ibias (ibias=iL2), which flows through two half bridge inverters, and the current iL2 of half bridge inverter B is reversed, so the current flowing through the load io (io =iL1+iL2) will be reduced relatively. Consequently there will be several problems such as additional power losses, lower efficiency, and increased device stress. However, switch S1 of IDBFTI just works in the positive half cycle of output current and switch Sb of IDBFTI is opposite, so they will ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 5. Juxtaposition In Bless Me Ultima Bright white light of the New Mexico sun bathes and protects the small town of Guadalupe. Like his parents and older brothers before him, young Antonio struggles to find his true inner self as his parents push two family names on him. In Anaya Rudolfo s novel Bless Me, Ultima, Antonio is ultimately a mixture between a Marez and a Luna, as seen through the juxtaposition between the symbols of the moon and the sea, as well as God and the Golden Carp. The moon that represents the Luna family, and sea which connects to the Marez, are forces which push Antonio to make his final decision about family. In the beginning, Antonio tries his hardest to please both of his parents by combining their dissimilar ideas about his future. Although Antonio begins his life thinking he is a mixture of both parents heritage, the juxtaposition of the symbols in the book changes his mind on that, It is the blood of the Lunas to be quiet... They are quiet like the moon And it is the blood of the Márez to be wild, like the ocean from which they take their name (Anaya 41). Aside from the obvious fact that the Spanish word for moon is, in fact, Luna, that family represents the moon. The calmness of said moon contrasts with the wild men of the sea. Maria is controlling of her family, similar to how the moon controls the sea. Each contrasting idea propels Antonio in separate directions either towards the Luna priests or the Marez vaqueros. Despite the fact that his mother wants to make a priest out of Antonio, the other side of his family thinks in their own unique way, He is a Marez... His forefathers were conquistadors, men as restless as the seas they sailed (Anaya 6). Once again, the contrary sides of Antonio s family pull him to the sea instead of the moon. The true struggle Antonio goes through is choosing his own destiny, even with the strong influences of both the moon and sea. Suddenly he has a moment of realization and tells his uncle, I am Marez, ... That is right, you are a Marez first, then Luna (Anaya 250). Even though he may think he is Marez first, he still lives with Luna blood coursing through his veins. After all, he skipped a grade, which makes him a boy of learning. Then again, his adoration of nature proves ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Heartache and pain with a drizzle of mixed emotions about life as an independent woman is what Kate Chopin was confronted with and it is what she wrote about in her short stories. We are talking about a woman before her time that challenged all to see the world through representations of reality. She was able to see the world for what it was during a difficult time for people of color and women battling to have equal rights. Repeatedly, she wrote about death, exotic thoughts, superficial love and real life issues however, the stories she wrote often portrayed some form of the life events and struggles that she in fact faced herself. When Kate was nineteen she married Oscar Chopin whom was a successful cotton broker, and over the next ten years she and Oscar had children and this seemed to have brought joy to Kate and Oscar s life. My argument is important because I will challenge Conard s article with the self fashioning s article by Keohane. In Conard s article, he demonstrates to answer the question whether or not we need more humanities. His answer is that we should be focus on technology and innovation to have a better living standards. (43) This paper also supports the self fashioning article by Keohane. Self fashioning builds the character, personality, and focus on the student. A self fashioned student is more likely to succeed in life in whichever line of specialization he chooses. Likewise, I disagree with Conard on the point that innovation and technology are more likely to bring success to the student. From experience, people who know their personality and character are able to use in their skills, time and education to be the best in whichever field, whether in technology and innovation or humanities. In my view, success and failure are not a factor of chosen line of specialization rather, it is a factor of hard work and determination to create a change. Self fashioning is more fundamental and basic education, like authority, and intelligence and it is determined by how people deal with small and basic things in life. Things like cleaning, washing, and taking care of oneself are more important that education when it comes to self fashioning. In my life, the most common basic things derive from self fashioning. Essay on The Progressive Movement The Progressive Movement (ca. 1890s 1910s) Even more energetic a sphere of historical controversy than that over the Populists is the historians argument over the Progressive movement. The Progressives were a heterogeneous collection of reformers. Active chiefly in the nation s cities and the urban mass media (and in the legislatures of such states as Wisconsin and New York), the Progressives carried out efforts to reform American society and governance on all fronts. They numbered among their ranks social Progressives (such as Jane Addams, the founder of the Hull House settlement movement), economic Progressives (such as Richard Ely, the noted Wisconsin economist who emphasized the need to prevent great concentrations of economic ... This new thinking took various forms including the use of local, state, and national government to protect workers from unsafe working conditions, to guard consumers against unsafe products, and to bring order and system to the growing, ever more complex economic system. As noted above, however, a division emerged between nationalist Progressives led by Theodore Roosevelt, who conceived the nation as a fully integrated economic, social, and political unit requiring national solutions to national problems, and localist Progressives led by Woodrow Wilson and Louis D. Brandeis, who believed that mere bigness was itself a dangerous threat to American liberty, and that solutions to the problems of American life were best given effect by state and local government. Progressives built on some of the ideas of the Populists, advocating greater democracy and accountability at all levels of government. Progressive initiatives and inventions in government included such devices as the referendum (by which the electorate would decide directly on major public questions), the initiative (by which the electorate could instruct their elected representatives to consider legislative measures), and the recall (by which the electorate could topple officials, for malfeasance or faith ithlessness to the interests of those they represented, before their terms of office were up). So God said to Noah, This is the sign of the covenant I have established between me and all life on the earth. When Adam and Eve sinned, it did not make God happy. So in order to cleanse the earth, He had Noah gather up two of every animal and make an arc for the animals and Noah s family. God then began to flood the earth. Since Noah was faithful, God kept him and his family safe from the flood. Then God put a big rainbow in the sky to remind us that He would never do that again. Some people may consider a person as their leader who is capable of taking them away from hardships or caring for them, or some people may consider a man steeped in wisdom and learning to be a leader. Difference notwithstanding, there still seems to be some commonality in all the perspectives behind the definition, which is related to choosing a best of the best person as their leader. The simple bottom line is that, nobody wants to have a person as his leader who doesn t have knowledge of the needs and aspirations of his people or who is not blessed with a certain temperament foe bearing hardships for his people, nor a vision for where they should be or how they should grow and influence the world around them. As the founder of tech startup, it is only natural for me to pick a leader who is a true technological visionary. It was not enough to simply pick someone who created innovative products, or created and ran a billion dollar company. For me it would have to be someone with the vision to shape the future and world around him, a person who could see how his works would directly impact the trajectory of the world and its impact on the human race at large. One huge advantage that the Union had in this before the battle is originally General Robert E. As of January 2014, ninety percent of Americans owned a smartphone, and twenty nine percent said they could not imagine living without their cell phone ( Mobile ). These numbers continue to climb and the grip that these gadgets have on society continues to get stronger. One possible solution to cutting back on electronics is following a technology diet. Just as a food diet focuses on cutting calorie intake, a technology diet focuses on slowly chipping away at the extreme technology usage to a moderate amount. A process of steps should be taken to successfully achieve a moderate consumption of technology. First, start off by setting goals. This is for the dieter to decide what they want to achieve from doing this. Then, after all the goal setting is done start by disabling all the annoying notifications that encourage people to pick up their phones at the slightest of vibrations. In 1972, Caleb Gattegno introduced The Silent Way, that is, a language teaching method whose basic concept is that the teacher should remain silent much of the time, thus its name while the students speak as much as possible. In the same way, Gattegno was under the impression that the teacher should focus on the way students learn more often rather than how to teach. In fact, he expressed support for language learning by problem solving, creative, discovering activity and all that, which is directly opposed to drills such as seen in audiolingualism. He, on the other hand, contends that students could naturally earn a new language like a child, through perception, awareness, creativity, and other mental processes. Besides being critical of linguistic theory, he devoted his thinking to a pedagogical perspective called the subordination of teaching to learning in that learners demands are placed at the center of teaching, so teaching is subordinate or dependent to learning. The analysis of the strength of these five forces within the video game industry will help to draw a conclusion as to whether or not it is an attractive industry for Sony to be in. This threat is also moderate for the game industry. The larger the variety of games as well as the better the quality the more likely a customer is to buy one game console over another. The fourth force is that of the bargaining power of the buyers. In the video game industry the buyers do not have very much power, thus making this a weak threat. Which in turn could turn into a self fulfilling prophecy because of being identified with the label and it becomes controlling. Once these steps have occurred, what Becker describes as the deviant career is completed when the individual joins an organised deviant group and thus accepting their identity of being deviant. However, this is not by any means inevitable and some of those who started out as convicts or drug addicts can become straight and get jobs or quit their habits. When Becker identified that he took a sequential approach he means how he explains deviance and at any stage in the sequence of his explanation it is possible that the deviant will re enter conventional society. Lemmert also uses the interactionist perspective in his view of labelling, outlining primary and secondary deviance, primary being the act before it is publicly labelled and secondary being the response of the individual or deviant to the reactions of others in society. But he sees the agents of social control to blame for deviance rather than the traditional views of the blame lying with the deviant individual or group. This labelling theory has contributed two concepts to help understand the relationship between media and crime: · Deviancy amplification, Lesley Wilkins points out that a response to deviant acts by media and the police can actually ... During the 1970 s and 1980 s, the Japanese and their U.S. companies demonstrated that high quality is achievable at lower costs and greater customer satisfaction. It was the result of using the management principles of total quality management (TQM). More and more U.S. companies have demonstrated that such achievements are possible Using TQM as a new way to manage. Such companies also found that they were recognized with everyone pulling in the same direction. Improvement had become a way of live. If well crafted, the vision statement can serve through a torrent of change in product and service technology. The strategic vision needs to consider both the external customer and the employees, but should lack a defining or differentiating phrase between them. For example, General Motors provides all employees a card with its strategic vision, including a cause effect diagram that indicates the importance of team work (figure 2). Simply stating a vision is not enough. It needs to be demonstrated by the actions of the executives, managers , superiors, foremen, and individuals. It should be done continuously in all their actions and initiatives. Moreover, deliberation must be exercised in developing these goals and strategies. They must reflect the values and culture of the work force. While top management commitment is essential, managers should realize when to lead and when to get out of the way. In a sense quality management is management from the bottom up. An atmosphere of responsibility must be created toward the customer for whatever product is produced or service is rendered (fig.3, below). 2. Barrier Removal It is inevitable that change will be resisted. In fact, a great deal of effort in quality management is expended in overcoming such resistance, usually by allowing change to come from individuals directly involved, rather from management. The whole idea of continuous improvement leads to continuous change. Some of these ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

A persuasive speech tugs at the listeners heart strings and urges them to do or believe in something or someone. In this case, the purpose of Chamberlain s speech was to persuade Parliament of the importance of accepting the Munich Agreement. Chamberlain truly believed he was doing the right thing for the people of England by signing the Munich Agreement, along with Germany, Italy and France. But if only he had realised what the future held for England, and the entire world, as WWII followed not long after. However, as my family will go on many tours on the history of Paris, I will have to see a lot of churches. My family will be the impetus for my experience in the churches, and the tour guides the ones bringing me into the churches. In preparation for this experience, I will try to keep an open mind, as the fact is that even if I don t believe in any religion personally, there are many people who do, and I think that it would be very interesting to try to see what people see in it. This challenges my current point of view because I know that I associate (unfairly) religious people as being somewhat close minded. I want to be able to be less close minded myself, ... The decadent surroundings were adorned with early carvings and gold statues. I learned of the crown of thorns, supposedly brought to the French by Saint Louis, and I learned of Saint Denis, who cut off his head and walked back to a site where he supposedly proclaimed that it would be his church. We went into the Saint Denis Church, Saint Gervais Saint Protais Church, Saint Etienne du Mont, and Notre Dame. We went into Roman Catholic Churches turned Synagogues in Le Marais, and they were all beautiful. Each church had a separate story, some being created around the time that Paris first came into existence. I remember scrutinizing each little detail, looking at the magnificent artwork and structure of each. One church we walked into had a ceremony going on, and embarrassed, we hurried out quickly. Yet, just seeing that people continued to use these ancient churches was quite heartwarming. I noticed that these people were all connected in a deep, ancient way. The personified instrument, using twelve African American youth singers in various heights symbolized the strings of the harp.
