Being an atheist, I don t spend much time in places of worship. However, as my family will go on
many tours on the history of Paris, I will have to see a lot of churches. My family will be the impetus

The decadent surroundings were adorned with early carvings and gold statues. I learned of the crown
of thorns, supposedly brought to the French by Saint Louis, and I learned of Saint Denis, who cut off
his head and walked back to a site where he supposedly proclaimed that it would be his church. We
went into the Saint Denis Church, Saint Gervais Saint Protais Church, Saint Etienne du Mont, and
Notre Dame. We went into Roman Catholic Churches turned Synagogues in Le Marais, and they were
all beautiful. Each church had a separate story, some being created around the time that Paris first
came into existence. I remember scrutinizing each little detail, looking at the magnificent artwork and
structure of each. One church we walked into had a ceremony going on, and embarrassed, we hurried
out quickly. Yet, just seeing that people continued to use these ancient churches was quite
heartwarming. I noticed that these people were all connected in a deep, ancient way. Sitting on the

For my Cultural Encounter Project, I had the pleasure of visiting The Cummer Museum of Art and
Gardens in Jacksonville, Florida. The museum was founded in 1958 by Ninah Cummer, who had a
very nice art collection in her home. The Cummer Museum is built on the site of Arthur and Ninah
Cummer s home and is considered the largest fine arts museum in northeast Florida.
The museum has a permanent collection of more than 5,000 objects from various points in history, and
the historic gardens have many statues and monuments. Artifacts in the museum include porcelain
pieces, paintings and sculptures from the Middle Ages through the 20th century. The museum features

Outside the Jacobsen Gallery which features the LIFT exhibition, are photos of a sculpture called The
Harp created by August Savage (a native of Green Cove Springs, Florida) in 1939 for the New York
World s Fair. Approximately 16 feet tall, Savage s sculpture, titled The Harp, was strongly influenced
by James Weldon Johnson s song, Lift Ev ry Voice and Sing.
The personified instrument, using twelve African American youth singers in various heights
symbolized the strings of the harp. The hand of God formed the sounding board, and the foot pedal
was represented by a kneeling man holding music. The sculpture was celebrated as one of Savage s
major works; however, with a lack of finances to cast it into bronze, the sculpture was destroyed at the
end of the Fair.
Despite the fact that The Harp does not exist in its final form, its legacy continues through numerous

London. The original is one in a series of 3.5 x 5.5 inch postcards, printed by Valentine Sons Ltd. The
Machinery Hall covered 125,000 square yards. In this image it looks very elaborate, garish, and
reminiscent of Gothic architecture. The flags seen on the top of the building are French and British.
There are decorations looking like lanterns around the perimeter of the building. Within the context of
the fair, the pavilion was vast yet not imposing.

In the Machinery Halls, heavy industry was represented by displays on mining, iron and steelwork,
armaments manufacture, shipbuilding, pumping and motive power machinery, electricity generation,
as well as textile and printing machinery. Many displayed objects were instruments of war such as a
gun carried on the backs of three dummy men. Warship firms displayed models of their scouts,
destroyers, armed cruisers and torpedo boats. War relics included an astrolabe of 1578, the barge of
the great Napoleon, the flat bottomed boats which the French used when they captured Algiers, and
some of the small cannons used on the gunwales of eighteenth century warships.
Numerous modern inventions were also featured. The steel and iron industry displayed flywheels, and
suction producers, while railway companies made a model of a Scenic Railway outside. The place of
honor in the French hall was taken by the great Pont à Mousson blast furnace. The London Electricity
Companies demonstrated modern cooking with electric range and kettles, and showed sewing
machines.
One of the great luxuries in the building was a free rest room, in the middle of which was a pleasant
fountain. The Franco British Exhibition: illustrated review commented on this idea: Remembering the
general comfortless ness of the grounds, it was a stroke of real genius to put that oasis of rest in the
centre of the grim and dour Machinery Halls.
The exhibition lasted from May 14 to October 31, 1908. The
